Jahi Di’Allo Winston

By Abigail Baldwin

Jahi Di’Allo Winston plays the lead of the upcoming, highly acclaimed film, Charm City Kings. Based on the documentary 12 O’Clock, the film follows Mouse (Winston), a young boy who wants nothing more than to be a part of the Midnight Clique, a tough group of Baltimore bike riders who rule the summertime streets. As he navigates the challenges of coming of age in a complicated world, he learns the hard way that the choices you make early on can change your life forever.

Charm City Kings had its world premiere on January 27 at Sundance Film Festival and will be making its way to SXSW in March. The film is set for nationwide release on April 17, 2020.

Right now, you can watch Winston in Everything Sucks on Netflix and 2019’s Queen & Slim, available on Prime Video.

360 Mag: What attracted you to the story of Charm City Kings?

JAHI: What attracted me to Charm City Kings was the environment in which the story took place. Having an opportunity to shed light on an entire community that’s consistently misinterpreted and misunderstood in the media was extremely appealing to me. That, as well as having the chance to be at the center of an entire universe sounded like a pretty cool first time experience…And it was!

360 Mag: In what ways do you relate to your character, Mouse?

JAHI: I would say that I related to Mouse’s ambition and relentlessness most. He has a fierce drive that causes him to overcompensate and get himself into trouble. I can definitely relate to that, having a similar drive that sometimes causes me to get ahead of myself.

360 Mag: When did you find out you’d be working with Meek Mill? How did you react?

JAHI: I can’t remember when I found out, but I do remember being intrigued by the idea that I was going to be able to be a part of Meek’s big acting debut. He’s amazing in this movie! I really think a lot of people are going to be impressed when they see him in it. You can really see his dedication to the work and how much he enjoys what he’s doing.

360 Mag: What was something you learned from your director Angel Manuel Soto?

JAHI: I learned so much from Angel. I feel like one of the biggest things I learned from him was how to maintain your vision and keep your cool in the midst of chaos. We were shooting in a very high-pressure environment and a lot of chaotic things were being thrown at us every day. Angel always maintained an optimistic attitude about it all. It was really inspiring to see. So that’s something that I definitely took away.

360 Mag: What excited you most about being at Sundance?

JAHI: The most exciting thing about being at Sundance was seeing our movie colored and complete in front of an audience for the first time. I think we all were sort of holding our breath because most of us hadn’t seen it and we were experiencing it all with the audience for the first time. For most of the audience members seemingly walking away being so moved by it was the best thing any of us could’ve asked for.

360 Mag: Who inspires you the most in the industry?

JAHI: I’m inspired by so many different people and entities. One that really stands out to me right now is Donald Glover (Childish Gambino). I really don’t get starstruck, but if I met him I’d probably be in awe. His work just means so much to me. From his screen work, to his music; his impact on my life and my work is just endless. I find so much commonality in everything that he does and says…He makes me feel seen. I could go on and on, but I won’t. He’s one of my inspirations, for sure.

360 Mag: Dream roll?

JAHI: My dream role is any role that I write for myself. I believe in making your own dreams come true.

360 Mag: Favorite fashion brands?

JAHI:  I’m just a fan of fashion period! I like different things about many different designers. One that has really caught my eye right now is this one South African brand called RICH MNSI.  They’re really contemporary and unique.

360 Mag: Can you tell us about your NAACP awards look?

JAHI: My NAACP awards look was a piece by a UK designer by the name of Kyle Ho. It was the first look that my stylist, Apuje Kalu, and I tried on. It was edgy and elegant. I’m not afraid to take risks with fashion as long as it’s something I like. We had a whole rack of clothes, but we didn’t even try any of the other ones on…We just knew it was THE ONE!

360 Mag: What are your interests outside of acting?

JAHI: Outside of acting, I’m most interested in being a leader, whatever that entails. I wanna be someone who pushes the culture forward, someone who does good work in marginalized communities across the world. Someone who challenges the world, rather than assimilating into it. That’s what I’m interested in…As I’m typing this, I realize you probably meant like, Baseball or something, and I just gave a long answer for no reason. Oh well…

Actress Linda Collins Making Waves in Hollywood with Strong Performances in Film and TV

Banner Year for Emerging Artist Includes Prominent Placements and Diverse Roles Accentuating Her Versatility and Natural Abilities in Entertainment

Established working Actress Linda Collins has been quite busy in 2019 so far; appearing with lead roles in several important and interesting projects of note – specifically “In My Eyes”, a film about a young man with Cerebral Palsy going to college and the anxiety that he carries with him (an Official Selection at LIIFE), “Three for the Road”, a comedy about three independent, intelligent women from completely different backgrounds who come together seeking spiritual enlightenment (directed by David Patrick Wilson, an Official Selection and Finalist as Best TV Episode in the Portland Comedy Film Festival) and Horror film by Director Terry Wickham, “Gruesome Threesome”; where a young couple have a fun online video chat, while watching an anthology horror film. What begins as innocent entertainment leads to a horrific conclusion. Collins has worked with Wickham before; on “Double Vision”, about a couple who once dated and reconnect after a decade apart whose bliss is shattered by pure terror. At the same time, two women who are business partners have been having issues professionally, which leads to an unimaginable terrifying outcome.

The latter three films have been selected to screen at the Hells Kitchen NYC Film Festival in January 2020.

Linda can also be seen in other upcoming productions including a principal role in 21st Century Vision Films crime thriller “The Stable” – playing a gritty nightclub owner/head of a human-trafficking ring.

Teyana Taylor – multi-hyphenate R&B superstar singer, songwriter, producer, director, dancer/choreographer, actor, fitness guru, model, mother and Harlem native  – announces the release of “Morning” featuring Kehlani, the brand new single and steamy video, both available today via G.O.O.D. Music/Def Jam Recordings.  “Morning” is the second advance track from THE ALBUM, following up the R&B smash “How You Want It? (HYWI?)” featuring King Combs.

THE ALBUM is the long-awaited follow-up to Teyana’s KTSE, one of the five G.O.O.D. Music/ Def Jam albums produced by Kanye West during his 2018 sojourn in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.  Released in June, KTSE (acronym for Keep That Same Energy) set off an 18-month chain reaction for Teyana, starting with its summertime RIAA- certified Gold smash “Gonna Love Me.”  Teyana performed “Gonna Love Me” (in a medley with “Rose In Harlem,” also from KTSE) on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.  Hip-hop audiences embraced the Gonna Love Me” remix featuring Wu-Tang Clan’s Ghostface KillahMethod Man and Raekwon, whose video was directed by Teyana herself.

KTSE spun off a hot new single and video for Teyana in early 2019, the explicit “WTP (Work This P***y).”  The video was nominated last week for “Best Dance Performance” at the upcoming BET Soul Train Awards, airing live from Las Vegas on November 17. The third single from KTSE was the evocative “Issues/Hold On.”  After slaying the audience with the song live on Ellen in April 2019, Teyana was surprised on-air when Ellen presented her with the RIAA gold award plaque for “Gonna Love Me,” bringing it all full circle.

As she continues to direct her own videos, Teyana – aka ‘Spike Tee’ – was again at the helm of the clip for her recent single, How You Want It? (HYWI?) featuring King Combs, released in August.

About TEYANA TAYLOR:
Being a jack of trades has allowed Teyana Taylor to become a master of all. From her smoky melodic vocals to her dynamic dance moves, the entertainer dips in dives between her talents that also include producing, songwriting, acting, directing and everything in between. When it comes to describing herself, the Harlem native can only think of one word: Everything.

“I literally can do everything. I never look at anything as being impossible,” she explains. “I exhaust all options to make what happen when I need to make happen.” Her mantra made her an early favorite to artists like Pharrell, who she signed her first deal with, and later choreographed videos for artists like Beyonce and Jay-Z. Her love for the arts and R&B later earned her the title of the first woman signed to Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music imprint.

Between R&B’s identity crisis in the 2010s, Teyana dropped her debut album VII, with tracks like “Maybe” (featuring Yo Gotti and Pusha T) and the sultry “Just Different” shaping her musical persona. The critically acclaimed album debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart in 2014, cementing her position in today modern R&B field. “I fought for that raw, hood necessary R&B and now I feel like it’s better than ever,” she says.

After spicing up the R&B charts, Teyana was blessed with the arrival of her daughter Junie with husband and NBA star Iman Shumpert in 2015. “I do all of this for my baby. She’s who I do it for,” she says about Iman “Junie” Tayla Shumpert Jr., her main source of inspiration. “I always show her how to be a leader and a businesswoman. I want her to believe that she can be anything she wants to be and it not be a shocker that she’s a female doing it all.” Soon after, Teyana went on to star in the internet-breaking video for Kanye West’s “Fade,” and scored her first MTV Moonman for “Best Choreography” at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards.

But it wasn’t until the release of her sophomore project K.T.S.E. in June 2018 that the world experienced Teyana’s talents. With her all-female production company The Aunties, Teyana self-directed videos for “WTP,” the Gold-selling single “Gonna Love Me,” and recently, “Issues/Hold On.” She has also directed videos for her peers like T.I. (“You”), Monica (“Commitment”) and Lil Duval (“Pull Up” featuring Ty Dolla $ign) with fans like Ms. Lauryn Hill and Elton John praising her boss moves.

Part of what makes Teyana stand out from the rest is her ability to move with precision and poise in everything she does. From the studio to the stage, every idea is a project with the singer front and center with a vision all her own. With her musical inspirations like Aaliyah, Teena Marie, Mint Condition and Janet Jackson speaking to her soul, Teyana is aware her mission is larger than life. “I’m working on me every day and I think that’s my purpose,” she says, comparing her life to a never-ending book. “I’m still going, still mastering and being a better me.”

Born and raised in Bushwick and of Puerto Rican descent, Anthony Ramos first made his mark originating the dual roles of John Laurens and Philip Hamilton in the TONY® and GRAMMY® Award-winning Broadway smash Hamilton.  In 2018, Ramos ignited his music career as an independent solo artist on his own terms. Not only did he lend his voice to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Almost Like Praying” benefit single, but he also began architecting a sharp and soulful signature take on contemporary music. He teamed up with producer Will Wells [Logic, Pentatonix] for The Freedom EP, which garnered acclaim from Billboard and many others.

In 2018, Ramos appeared in the Academy Award-winning film A Star Is Born, directed by Bradley Cooper and starring Lady Gaga where he played ‘Ally’s’ (GaGa) best friend. Most recently, he starred in the critically-acclaimed Netflix series She’s Gotta Have It, created by Spike Lee, based on his 1986 film.

Next up, Ramos will grace the screen once again as the lead role in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s highly-anticipated ‘In the Heights’ movie directed by Jon M. Chu for Warner Bros to be released in June 2020.
