VISIT DURBAN × ULTRAMARATHON

The Comrades Marathon is an ultramarathon of approximately 89 km (approx. 56 miles) which is run annually in the KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa between the cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg. It is the world’s largest and oldest ultramarathon race. Registrations for the 93rd edition of the race open tomorrow, Friday, September 1 and close on November 30, or when the entry limit of 20,000 runners is reached. The Comrades Marathon 2018 theme is “No Turning Back” which encapsulates the grit, perseverance and determination it takes to complete.

For the first time ever, the race will finish at Durban Moses Mabhida Stadium, host of the 2010 World Cup.

Wondering why Durban is an awesome place to race, then stay and play? Here are the top 10 reasons:

1. The Golden Mile

This 3.7 mile long sandy beach is by far the greatest attraction in Durban. Swimming is good all year round due to the warm, subtropical climate. Surfing is prevalent, dozens of pools can be found along the esplanade, and crafts can be purchased from seaside stalls. Exotic restaurants, nightclubs, and many hotels can be found beachside. For some of the best views on the beach, visitors can hop on a brightly colored rickshaw and cruise the Golden Mile, Zulu style.

2. Vibrant Afro-Indian Culture & Cuisine

Durban is a coastal melting pot influenced by African and Indian cultures and is home to the largest Indian population outside of India. In the Central Business District, visitors can stroll the Victoria Street Market where men in traditional kurtas and women in saris sell spices, curry powders, silk scarves, and more. One of Durban’s top culinary delights is the city’s signature dish of Bunny Chow, Indian curry housed in a hollowed-out loaf of white bread.

3. uShaka Marine World

Located at the end of the Golden Mile, this 40-acre theme park offers water rides, interactive animal shows, a snorkeling lagoon, shark cage diving, a reptile exhibit, shopping, myriad dining options, and more. uShaka Marine World is made up of five distinct sections: uShaka Sea World, uShaka Wet ‘n Wild, uShaka Beach, uShaka Village Walk, and uShaka Kids World.

4. Moses Mabhida Stadium

With its iconic “arch of triumph”, Moses Mabhida Stadium is an engineering feat that provides Durban with a defining landmark to match the Eiffel Tower, Sydney’s Opera House, or the London Eye. Built in 2009, the 85,000 seat stadium played host to the 2010 World Cup and today is the site of large-scale sporting events, Essence Festival Durban, and six signature activities. These include The Adventure Walk, a 500-step guided climb to the top of the arch, and the Big Rush Big Swing, the Guinness Book of World Records’ tallest swing allowing the adventurous to free fall 772 feet into the stadium bowl while attached to a harness.

5. Essence Festival Durban

The Essence Festival returns to Durban September 26 – October 1, 2017. In its second year in South Africa, the festival will again showcase international performers; world-famous speakers; and local artists, chefs, and experts. Just a few of the big names who took part in 2016 included Steve Harvey, Yolanda Adams, and Kelly Price. A sister festival to the long-running New Orleans Essence Festival, the Essence Festival promotes climate of empowerment, inspiration, and entertainment.

6. Florida Road

Florida Road is the heart of Durban’s entertainment scene. The buzz in this shopping, dining, and nightlife district starts in the early morning at the bustling sidewalk cafes and continues throughout the day at a wide range of boutiques, galleries, and more than 30 eateries.

7. Zulu Experiences

Zulu people make up the largest ethnic group of South Africa, with an estimated 10 million residents in KwaZulu-Natal. Several opportunities exist to explore Zulu culture in the Durban area including Shakaland and PheZulu Safari Park, which feature replica Zulu homesteads where visitors can participate in traditional ceremonies, learn Zulu customs, try traditional beer, and enjoy energetic Zulu dance performances; and iSithumba, an authentic Zulu village in the Valley of 1000 Hills where visitors can venture into homes and establishments to meet, interact with, and learn from locals.

8. Inanda Heritage Route

The Inanda Heritage Route includes some of Durban’s most important, albeit little-known, historical sites providing a snapshot of critical moments in South African and Indian history. Stops include Mahatma Ghandi’s Phoenix Settlement; the gravesite of Dr. John L. Dube, the first-ever president of the African National Congress; and Inanda Seminary, the first secondary school for African girls.

9. Accessible Location

King Shaka International Airport is located just 25 minutes north of Durban’s city center, offering convenient international access and domestic flights to all major South African cities.

10. Proximity to Outdoor Adventures in Greater KwaZulu-Natal

Durban is the jumping off point to the Zulu Kingdom, and visitors can experience the majestic Drakensberg Mountains, the abundant wildlife of Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Park, and the wetland wonders of St. Lucia, by driving just two-and-a-half to three-and-a-half hours outside of the city.

ABOUT DURBAN

Located an hour southeast of Johannesburg by air, Durban is the beachfront gem of KwaZulu-Natal Province (KZN). A bustling harbor city and popular surfing spot, Durban lies on the Indian Ocean and is South Africa’s third largest urban area. Remnants of British colonialism and a mix of Zulu, Indian, and Afrikaans traditions give the city a rich cultural heritage, while outdoor activities abound on the signature “Golden Mile” beachfront and in the lush rolling hills that encompass Durban’s suburbs. DEV SET TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM

ON SEPTEMBER 8!

STREAM NEW SONGS “ALL I WANNA DO” & “COME AT ME”

(SPOTIFY | APPLE MUSIC)

Multi-platinum recording artist, DEV is set to release her sophomore album, I Only See You When I’m Dreamin’ (IOSYWID) September 8, which is available for pre-order now HERE! Fans who pre-order the album will receive two new songs, the sassy-sweet “All I Wanna Do,” and the female anthem “Come At Me.” This will mark DEV’s first album to be released simultaneously to retail and streaming platforms. With a crew of collaborators that include Sarah Hudson (Katy Perry, Halsey, Rita Ora), MNDR, Marko Penn and producers Sam Sumser, Ritual, Isaac Valens and Mike Mac, the album finds Dev reclaiming her bass-heavy hip-pop beats that shot her to chart stardom, but with a reinvigorated sense of singer-songwriter swagger.

“All I Wanna Do” prompts the familiar Dev-like bounce, while lyrically the track ventures into Minaj-worthy raunch, but it’s Dev’s vocals and harmonies that shine through the sass. “The balance of how bouncy it is, but with how sexy and girly the lyrics and melody are fit really well,” Dev says of the track. “Usually a lot of male driven songs will usually be like ‘I wanna F you!’ so this will be so fun to perform from my point of view.” The additional release, “Come at Me” is somewhat of a yin to “All I Wanna Do”’s yang. Lyrically, Dev urges a “don’t-take-any-BS” attitude over a highly catchy melody.

In it’s entirety, IOSYWID, serves as ode to Dev’s past—the good, the bad, the fun and the sad. Inspired by dreams and thoughts about those who she has since lost touch with, the vibe of the album radiates a theme of self-reflection from her current perspective. Dev takes listeners on a full-circle journey from late night sexting (“Drunk Texting” – OUT Thursday 8/4!) to piano-laden heartbreak (“Alone Again”)

This full-length album follows Dev’s break-out 2012 debut album, The Night the Sun Came Up, which features the platinum “In the Dark,” and landed her critical acclaim, spots on influential end-of-year lists, numerous brand syncs and commercial success. In 2013 and 2014 she released two complimenting EPs, Bittersweet July Part I and Bittersweet July Part II. 2016 saw the release and success of “#1” f/ Nef the Pharoah, which peaked at #15 on the rhythmic radio chart. With over 350M video views, a Billboard #1 hit, multi-platinum & gold certified song successes, and countless collaborations, IOSYWID promises to propel Dev as the sleek, speak-sing, pop pioneer of her generation.

Q&A’s

Tell us about your new album. How did it come together? Who did you work with?

  • My new album! It’s called I Only See You When I’m Dreamin’ and I had an awesome opportunity to work with a bunch of different people on this project. Amazing artists, writers and producers. Everyone involved in this album helped to push me out of my comfort zones and create everything I could’ve wanted. I had such a specific vision for this project. I was having vivid dreams of someone who I no longer speak to and these songs reflect that person and specific moments of my past. I’m so happy with the overall outcome and I’m so excited for everyone to listen!! Shout out to Marko Penn, Isaac Valens, The 87’s, MNDR & Rey Reel

—Do you have a favorite track or tracks on the album? Why?

I love them all for different reasons! There’s some slaps, some with more emotional vibes and even a couple voice notes from people close to me. It was a process of gathering these songs over the course of two years so they’re all special to me.

—It’s been 5 years since your debut album. Since then you’ve put out some mixtape EPs and singles. Why the long gap in between LPs?

  • Honestly, the timing never felt right to release album 2 until now. I had been through a lawsuit for a year and a half where I couldn’t release music, my daughter was born with a gnarly birth defect that had us living in and out of the hospital, I never stopped touring and I was in the studio a bunch, so everything felt very intense for a few years. I needed to keep living, experiencing and finally come around to putting together songs that felt right. I had the opportunity coming off of having successful songs in the past to be true to myself and be patient. And one day the list of songs came together, the title and I knew it was right!

—How have you changed since your debut album? Musically and personally?

  • I’ve grown up a bit since my first project. I’ve grown more aware and appreciative of life and opportunity. I still love to pop bottles though lol! But I think the lessons I’ve learned in the past 5 years have been crucial to me becoming the BEST ME & I’m getting there.

—How do you think your fans will react to this new body of music? And do you feel like it’s different from the previous music you’ve put out?

  • I hope they’ll love it! I hope it makes them happy and want to have a good time! I think this project isn’t as “dancey” if you will – as my first project, but the core of who I am is still very present. Times have changed and music continues to change, so there’s obvious differences, but it’s still allllllll me!

—Can fans expect to see you on tour soon?

  • Yes! I’ll be announcing dates very soon! I can’t wait to get back on the road.

—Any fun stories from the studio you can share?

  • So many fun times recording this project! I’ll never forget the night I was working on ‘come at me’ and when I was finished we opened all the doors to the outside are and played it super loud and I remember feeling infinite. All of a sudden all the crazy shit I went through in the past 5 years didn’t matter/we’re okay. I felt strong. I’m sure the neighbors hated that I played it 100 times haha but I couldn’t help it. It was awesome. That feeling is why I make music, it’s pretty indescribable.

—What are the most important lessons you have learned on your journey in the music industry?

  • The most important lessons: stay true to yourself, no one else can ever be you even if they try! Surround yourself with the right people, people who believe in you even when you might slightly question yourself. Work hard and then work even harder. And live in the moment! Music is a magical thing.

—Any particular people you’d like to collaborate with in the future?

  • Robyn. Karen O. Nelly Furtado. Gwen Stefani. Flume. Mnek. Mo. I don’t know I’m a fan of so many people!

—Describe the sound of the new album.

  •  It’s light. Wild. Fun. Top down on an unexpected road trip type album.

EZI RELEASES REDEMPTION VIDEO

STEVE MADDEN’S 5TOWNS RECORDS’ DEBUT ARTIST EZI

RELEASES “REDEMPTION” VIDEO VIA REFINERY 29 TODAY

UPCOMING FESTIVAL PERFORMANCES AT MADE IN AMERICA (9/2) & KAABOO (9/15)

HEADLINE PERFORMANCE ON 9/13 AT FREEHOLD BROOKLYN

DEBUT EP DUE THIS FALL

Having recently been revealed as the first signing to shoe designer Steve Madden’s newly launched 5Towns Records—the label founded by Madden and music/marketing veteran Steve Feinberg – EZI dropped the official video for her debut single “REDEMPTION” today, via Refinery 29. Watch HERE.

Co-directed by Antony Langdon (member/vocalist of the band Spacehog) and EZI, as well as conceptualized by both, the video takes the viewer down the rabbit hole into a modern-day, but vacant ‘wonderland.’ “I wanted to create a world that felt like my mind at the time of writing ’Redemption,’ says EZI. “A place that is dark and that often I get lost in. In the video, I’m going on an adventure where I’m both running away and towards something. I’m running from a part of myself or from a state of mind. Ultimately the message of the song is to embrace your vulnerability, because it’s our vulnerability and darkness that allows us see the light and beauty that does exist.” Fans can also get a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the video HERE.

EZI will also make her festival debut at Philadelphia’s Made in America festival, this Saturday, 9/2, performing with frequent collaborator, DJ/Producer, Kap Slap, as well as at Kaaboo Festival in San Diego 9/15. EZI will also headline FREEHOLD Brooklyn on 9/13 (8pm Doors/9:30pm Performance. Fans can enter to win a pair of tickets to Made in America (Saturday only) or attend the 9/13 performance in Brooklyn, NY for FREE, by heading over to www.eziofficial.com and signing up for the EZI mailing list.

Upon the audio release and debut of “REDEMPTION,” Nylon Magazine urged listeners to “press play and twirl to your own broken-hearted fantasy” and described it as “playful, sad, and made for warm summer nights.” Listen HERE. Billboard Magazine hailed “the minimalist pop jam stands as a perfect introduction to EZI, who used a low moment last year to empower herself and accept ‘all I’ve got’ as the chorus touts.”

The Long Island, New York native wrote the song in August 2016, during one of the lowest points in her life. On hiatus from Nickelodeon’s The Other Kingdom, which she starred in for its one on-air season, EZI bought a one-way ticket to Los Angeles to focus on her music career for a few months (EZI grew up acting, dancing, and singing). But when she arrived in the City of Angels earlier that summer, she found herself at an unexpected crossroads.

“I’ve always struggled with depression,” EZI says. “I’m a very emotional person. [When I wrote “REDEMPTION”], I was living alone in Hollywood, my schedule was all over the place, I was going through some stuff personally … but more than that, I don’t even know what triggered it—I was honestly so lost, so detached, so removed from myself. Most people actually think [the song] is about a relationship [with another person], but it’s actually about the relationship I have with myself. You wake up loving yourself, you wake up hating yourself, [or] being upset or disappointed.

Fans can expect the debut EP from EZI this coming fall!

ABOUT 5TOWNS RECORDS:

5Towns Records is an American record label based in New York City, founded by shoe designer Steve Madden and his business partner, music industry & branding veteran Steve Feinberg.

Feinberg whose company 8spoke, consults for Madden’s brands on music/culture, has been working with Steve Madden on all brand music endeavors for the last 5 years. With the continuing success and the consistent growth of the Steve Madden Music platform, the two Steve’s decided they wanted to get even closer to the music and the artists… and 5Towns Records was born.

Feinberg’s achievements as a former artist manager, that discovered and managed multi-platinum artist Good Charlotte and worked with a dozen more including, Flight of The Conchords and My Morning Jacket, his work with the major labels, publishers and distribution groups to curate music programs while establishing artist/brand relationships, lead them to create this exciting new venture.

Seeing the industry change incredibly in the past few years, 5Towns considers itself a new label for the new age. Now that brands have become a bigger, more important and more accepted part of the music world, 5TR is in a unique position to help artist be heard AND seen.

Unlike most companies, Steve Madden is not only a brand but a real person, a fan who LOVES music and wants to be an integral part of discovering, working with and developing artists. 5Towns is part of the creation of a whole new version of the industry. While there has been a lot of “artist vs label” sentiment lately, 5TR is uniquely positioned to be artist driven and artist centered. 5TR can alleviate great deal of that skepticism as an independent label with its own funding, but unlike most indie labels out there…they have the ability to utilize the incredible brand association potential (when necessary) to completely separating themselves (when appropriate). 5Towns is in a positively uncommon position. The label will be positioned unique to every artist signed to 5Towns. 5TR seeks to build a stable of artists who are proud of their label. In a cynical time, bookended by tales of corporate overreach, 5TR is a label artists can turn to, knowing their message will be heard and their vision will be supported. 5Towns Records is where passion, hard work, vision, talent, music and ambition meet.

BESTIVAL 2017 HEADS TO BALI

Bestival Bali, the award-winning UK festival to hit Indonesian shores on 30th September and 1stOctober, has revealed its next wave of acts.

Adding to an already jam-packed line-up, Bestival Bali has added the multi-platinum selling Pendulum, who will be playing an exclusive DJ set in their iconic, electronic rock style. Also, hailing from Australia, new artists to hit the bill include electro-duo, Bag Raiders, multi-instrumentalist, Kilter, and the tech-house powerhouse, Colour Castle.

The new announced acts follow Bestival Bali’s first artist announcement, featuring old friends and new from Alt-J to Purity Ring and De La Soul. Promising to make the inaugural edition one to remember, Bestival will bring its trademark unique, creative vision from the UK to the paradise island of Bali, Indonesia.

Rob da Bank, Bestival curator says “So here we are upping the ante with our first foray into Indonesia’s festival scene. We’ve got some old-school legends, hip hop wizardry and indie beauties, so we’re adding some serious antipodean vibes with the like of Pendulum, Bag Raiders and Kilter who are all smashing it down under. We’re only a (long) stone’s throw from Australia so you’ve no excuse. Book ya flight!”

First up, the mighty Pendulum! Taking to the hallowed Bestival decks, the festival is honoured to welcome the founding member of one of the most exciting musical forces of the last decade – Paul ‘El Hornet’ Harding of drum & bass and metal behemoths Pendulum. Landing in Bali as part of a busy summer, that includes a residency at legendary Ibiza super club Amnesia, expect some insane drum & bass action from one of the finest DJs in the game.

Australian duo Jack Glass and Chris Stacey are Bag Raiders, purveyors of spectacular electronic madness that has been setting the world alight since their debut EP was unleashed over a decade ago.  Chances are, if you’ve stumbled into a club, wobbled at a party, looked into the light at a festival or dawdled along the radio dial then you’ve been exposed to the majesty of Bag Raiders, who now bring their incredible live show to Bestival Bali.

One of Australia’s top 20 most streamed electronic artists, Kilter has quickly made the leap from burgeoning multi-instrumentalist to household name. Adored by listeners from all corners of the internet and festivalgoers alike for his euphoric, energised sound, Kilter is the moniker for 24-year-old Sydney rising star Ned East. Having amassed 40 million streams online, multiple visits to the top of Hype Machine charts and triumphed in the Triple J Like A Version studio, he has extensively toured Australia and played every major festival in the country. 2016 saw Kilter depart on his debut UK/EU tour and 2017 saw him touring across America.

Renowned for his melodic poolside grooves and slamming late night stompers, Colour Castle has been a driving force on the Aussie tech house scene for years now, gaining favour with the likes of Carl Cox, Doorly and Hannah Wants with one powerhouse release after another.

Bestival Bali will take place at the incredible Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK Cultural Park). With breath-taking vistas across the tropical landscape of Bali, and with over 240 acres of parkland centred around 25m high limestone-carved cliffs. POWERS RELEASES NEW SONG “JUST KIDS” TODAY

Check out “Just Kids” Here!

Critically acclaimed alt-pop duo POWERS—Mike Del Rio and Crista Ru—share their brand new single “Just Kids” today. Get it HERE via Republic Records.

An unshakable and unpredictable anthem of youth, “Just Kids” segues from a verse highlighting Crista’s delicate crooning into a tropical house-style drop and chantable hook. It’s the latest track to be released from the group after a string of unforgettable tracks released in 2017 including “Closer,” “Man On The Moon,” “Heavy” and “Dance.”

About the song, POWERS commented, “We were both still living in New York at the time, carving out our own existence with each other and the city when the initial seed of the song started. “Just Kids” was partially inspired after reading Patti Smith’s book of the same title and going through our own journey as Patti did in the 70’s. There’s something about undressing someone, figuratively- and in reality, that can feel so playful and eternal. Creativity and connection are what keep us taller children after all and we wanted to write a song about that.”

ABOUT POWERS:
POWERS is Mike Del Rio and Crista Ru. If you haven’t heard their names, rest assured, you’ve heard their tunes. After Del Rio inked a publishing deal with Alex Da Kid (Rihanna, Imagine Dragons), his eclectic writing and productions started popping up on TVs, playlists and radios everywhere. Working with top artists such as The Chainsmokers and Kylie Minogue, Del Rio most recently made waves by producing the international hit “Lost on You” by LP, the anthemic “Jungle” for X Ambassadors[feat. Jamie N Commons & Jay-Z] and executive producing The Knocks’ So Classic EP (on which POWERS wrote and featured on the title track “Classic”). On the flip side of this creative powerhouse is songwriter and bassist Crista Ru. Aside from lending her distinct vocals and unique top lining to POWERS, her credits read like a “who’s who” of the recent pop landscape . From penning the lead tune from Selena Gomez’s Stars Dance album to working with Swedish duo Icona Pop, Ms. Ru has a poignant knack as an artistic muse and a searing-hot songstress, stirring the two together to push forward the sound of alternative pop. Previously in 2016, their infectious romper, “Beat of My Drum” shot up to the top of the Spotify Global Viral Chart and was featured as a lead song on campaigns for Garnier & Sprint. Following up with an equally impactful “Loved by You” and “Sunshine,” the band has reached over 60 million cumulative streams on Spotify, topped Hype Machine several times and received the coveted Emerging Artists Spotlight on iTunes.

Lee to direct the visual. A fan favorite, “Bad At Love” has already racked up nearly 30 million streams combined since release.

Cruising through the desert under a beating hot sun, the video continues the story of two star-crossed lovers, despite forces trying to keep them apart. Capturing dystopian chic like only she can, our heroine recounts one failed, albeit hot, love after another as her journey twists and turns through a wild wasteland.

Next up, GRAMMY® Award-nominated Halsey brings her biggest, brightest, and boldest stage show yet to arenas everywhere on this fall’s hopeless fountain kingdom Tour, kicking off September 29. See the full itinerary below.
