SAFARI RETREAT IN AFRICA

NEW WELLNESS SAFARI RETREAT COMPANY MAKES SPLASH IN AFRICA

For years wellness influencers have taken their show on the road to beautiful settings in the Caribbean and United States, but now The Safari Retreat company is giving wellness travelers the chance to combine the serenity of Africa with the exhilaration of a safari for one of the most unique travel offerings available.

The Safari Retreat company is the premiere wellness retreat company in Africa. Founder Becky Robertson came up with the idea to bring retreats to Africa to take advantage of the almost mystical quality of the land. Robertson’s family has offered traditional safaris for more than 35 years.

“I grew up in the safari business and saw first-hand how Africa awed, inspired and changed our guests,” she said. “I thought there was no better setting to offer transformative wellness retreats. Our programs allow people to disconnect through nature and the wild to reconnect with themselves physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.”

The Safari Retreats couldn’t be more timely as the Global Wellness Summit named adventure wellness travel as a Top 10 Trend for 2022.

The Safari Retreats are held at personally vetted mid-range and luxury safari lodges in the private and off the beaten track region of Laikipia. Lodges such as Lewa Wilderness, one of Kenya’s oldest and most private safari experiences, Borana Lodge and El Karama offer incrediable wildlife settings and experiences, with the chance to see the Big 5 at many locations. The Safari Retreat works with some of the top wellness influencers in the world to bring yoga, Pilates and mind/body retreats to Africa. The retreats blend the wellness programming with daily safari activities including; game drives, safari walks, horseback safari expeditions and camel rides. Each retreat includes all accommodations, meals, and transfers and travel within Africa.

For 2022 The Safari Retreat is pleased to offer the following retreats:

All Safari Retreats are designed to take people out of their comfort zones to allow them to have a-ha moments that truly change the way they think about themselves and their internal stories. Through adventure, slowing down and attuning to nature people are primed to have a transformational experience that goes far beyond simply traveling to Africa to view “The Big 5.”

Angama Mara’s Map Room

Angama Mara, the award-winning luxury safari lodge perched on a cliffside overlooking Kenya’s Maasai Mara, has created a new Map Room to give guests a deeper understanding of the Mara, Kenya and East Africa. Comprising more than 60 maps, books, photography and artifacts, the Map Room is somewhere quiet for guests to spend time between game drives, while gaining a sense of place within the region.

“At Angama, we believe stories shared with our guests are what they remember long after they have left Africa. Being one of the earliest forms of human communication, maps tell stories. And we have so many more to share with our guests with the addition of our handsome new Map Room,” says Angama CEO Nicky Fitzgerald.

As guests enter, they will notice the room’s centerpiece: a distressed steel map installation of the Mara Triangle, designed by South African sculptor Simon Bannister. Guests, especially younger ones, can have fun placing steel animal cut-outs on the interactive map, showing where each was sighted while out on safari.

Some of the maps were illustrated exclusively for Angama, while others were sourced from the Royal Geographic Society in London, as well as various museums and libraries, with one dating back to 1608. The icons hanging on the East Africa photographic wall celebrate four of Angama’s favorite wildlife legends: Scarface of the Maasai Mara; the great tuskers Tim and Ahmed; and Gertie, the famous long-horned rhino from Amboseli.

The Map Room is also home to a collection of natural history books, Maasai artifacts and animal skulls. Baskets filled with map-themed puzzles and games, and a Maasai dress-up box ensures younger guests are entertained while their parents explore the space.

Set at the heart of the lodge, the Map Room neighbors the Photographic Studio, Swimming Pool, Safari Shop, Beading Studio and Fitness Room. This spacious room is also perfect for a special dinner occasion from fireside meals for eight or more, to a grand gathering of up to 30 guests. Equipped with a drop-down screen and Wi-Fi, the Map Room can also be set up for movie screenings, as well as presentations for up to 60 guests.

About Angama Mara

Angama Mara is a remarkable owner-run safari lodge located high above Kenya’s Maasai Mara, considered by many to be the loveliest game reserve on the continent and home to Africa’s most dramatic landscapes and wildlife encounters. Here guests will find two intimate camps of just fifteen glass-fronted tented-suites each, a private airfield and access to the Mara a mere 10-minute drive from the lodge, along with a famously warm Kenyan welcome. Situated on the very site where many of the iconic scenes from Out of Africa were filmed, tailor-made days on safari are as action-packed or as gentle as guests choose them to be: hot air ballooning, garden-to-table lunches in the Shamba, walking safaris, hosted photographic safaris, interactions with the fascinating Maasai culture or simply doing nothing at all. The lodge is perfectly complemented by the new Angama Safari Camp, an exclusive-use, light footprint tented camp set deep in the Maasai Mara moving amidst its abundant wildlife.

AdventureWomen Partners with African Wildlife Foundation

AdventureWomen, a by-women, for-women adventure travel company, has announced that they are partnering with the African Wildlife Foundation, an organization that supports the conservation of Africa’s wildlife and environment through community development, sustainability projects, education initiatives and more. As part of the collaboration, leaders from the two organizations will be hosting a special women’s safari to Zimbabwe in May of 2022.

Joining the trip will be AdventureWomen’s owner Judi Wineland, a longtime conservationist and adventure travel pioneer; and Carter Smith, AWF safari program manager and author of the children’s book African Tea. Joining Judi and Carter will be several other visionary women including Olivia Mufute, the first female Chief Ecologist at the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority and the current Zimbabwe country director for AWF; and Sharon Stead, founder of the Mother Africa Trust, which supports female-focused projects throughout Zimbabwe.

Both AdventureWomen and the African Wildlife Foundation believe in empowering girls and women throughout the continent, and this shared mission will be weaved into many aspects of the trip. A highlight of the journey will be a dinner hosted by Aunt Flatter, a Zimbabwe local with decades of wisdom about the country.

“At African Wildlife Foundation, we believe that women in Africa have a critical role to play in conservation on the continent,” says Carter Smith. “That’s why I’m so excited about AWF’s budding partnership with AdventureWomen, and honored to participate in this beautifully crafted safari with Judi Wineland. The Zimbabwe safari will feature women ambassadors, travelers, and conservation heroes. We can’t wait for this inspiring adventure.”

The trip will include once-in-a-lifetime experiences, including a visit to the majestic Victoria Falls, a walking safari to try to spot incredibly rare white rhinos, and a sunset cruise along the Zambezi River. Participants will also have the opportunity to visit the Lupani Primary School in Kazungula, Zambia (across the country border, nearby Victoria Falls). The school was rebuilt as an initiative of the African Wildlife Foundation’s Classroom Africa program, providing a safe learning environment for children across seven grades.

“We are thrilled to partner with AWF,” says Judi Wineland, whose philanthropic work in Africa began with her founding a Tanzania-based non-profit 25 years ago. “By inviting participants to foster female-to-female connections, we hope this trip will continue to bolster AWF and bring awareness to their incredible work.”

Angama Mara Appoints New General Manager

Azei Lago, Opening Team Member of the Award-Winning Safari Lodge, Promoted to Lead the Team

Angama Mara is delighted to announce the appointment of Azei Lago as General Manager.

Following an exhaustive search that included hundreds of applications from around the world, including Kenya’s finest hospitality professionals, hoteliers and safari operators alike, the renowned property overlooking the Maasai Mara has chosen to promote from within and confirm one of its own as its new General Manager.

“I know that Azei will be an accomplished steward, and a nurturing, fair, yet uncompromising leader, committed to pushing the team to even greater heights,” says Nicky Fitzgerald, CEO. “I am so proud we are rewarding talent from what we call ‘The University of Angama’ and will now have a fully Kenyan hospitality team caring for our guests.”

“Azei was the stand-out candidate with the appropriate mix of hospitality excellence, fanaticism about guest delight, and a true leader with a history of building and empowering his teams,” says Steve Mitchell, Angama Mara’s co-founder. “He is well-loved, well-respected and embodies everything about the ‘Angama way’ and our values of respect, honesty, courage, joy and humanity.”

With an extensive career in the hospitality industry spanning three decades – including running several restaurants and hotels and teaching hospitality management – Azei (pronounced ah-Zay) has been with Angama since its pre-opening, joining as a camp manager and most recently serving as Operations Manager. He succeeds Shannon and Tyler Davis, who are returning to the U.S. after six years at Angama Mara.

“My DNA is about delighting guests through passionate service. One cannot deliver this alone, and fortunately, this already exists at Angama,” said Azei. “As a family grows, it needs familiar stewardship and leadership with common values, ensuring continuity while promoting growth of both the business and the people who work within it. Being in a position where I can continue to make a meaningful change within Angama and in our surrounding communities, is a fulfillment of my dreams.”

Beloved by both guests and staff, Azei can trace his generous and welcoming nature back to his upbringing. Raised in a modest Nairobi household that was always full of visitors, both short- and long-term, Azei credits his early home life for his career in taking care of guests.

ABOUT ANGAMA MARA

High above the Maasai Mara where some of the most romantic scenes from “Out of Africa” were filmed, Angama Mara comprises two separate and intimate camps, each encompassing 15 tented guest suites. Built on the edge of the Great Rift Valley on one of the most sought-after sites on the continent, this lodge offers heart stopping views as far as the eye can see. The lodge, helmed by industry veteran Nicky Fitzgerald (formerly of &Beyond), boasts outstanding game viewing 12 months of the year, with private access to the reserve. Inspired by the Swahili word for ‘suspended in mid-air,’ Angama Mara floats 1,000 feet above the Maasai Mara, where, every morning, hot air balloons sail past the 30-foot-wide floor-to-ceiling glass fronts of each suite. In addition to consistently excellent game viewing, including Africa’s Big Five, guests enjoy walking safaris, garden-to-table lunches in the shamba, editing their images in the photographic studio, a fitness center, a 40-foot-long swimming pool, a curated gallery of African art, clothing and jewelry, and a sun-filled studio where local Maasai women work at beading bespoke items. Angama Mara was named #1 Safari Lodge in the World by Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards 2018 and was named in the top ten safari lodges in Africa in the Travel+Leisure World’s Best Awards 2020. Opening in 2020, Angama Safari Camp is a sole-use camp situated amidst the mega herds of the Great Migration and features the same fresh safari aesthetic as its sister camp Angama Mara. For assistance in planning a safari, the bespoke travel concierge service, Angama Safaris, is standing by to ensure smooth, seamless and safe travels around East Africa.

Mahali Mzuri Re-opens to International Travelers

As international flights to Kenya start to resume, Mahali Mzuri, the luxury tented safari camp in the Maasai Mara, owned by Sir Richard Branson and part of the Virgin Limited Edition collection of properties, has re-opened its doors once again.

With a robust set of new safety measures in place that go above and beyond local government guidelines, the camp is well prepared to bring back the magic of the Maasai Mara, putting the safety and wellbeing of its guests at the very heart of everything it does. With Kenya awarded the “Safe Travel Stamp” by the World Travel and Tourism Council for adopting global health and hygiene protocols, it makes for the perfect destination for those looking for the safety of an adventure away from the crowds.

Mahali Mzuri is located in the northern region of Kenya’s famous Maasai Mara ecosystem in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy and offers a ringside view to some of the most awe-inspiring wildlife viewing there is and also happens to be right in the path of the annual Great Migration.

Jon Brown, Managing Director of Virgin Limited Edition, commented: “We have always remained optimistic that we may be able to open some of our properties this summer and we were thrilled to announce the opening of Mahali Mzuri, the second in our collection to do so.

We have been welcoming back our resident Kenyan guests for the past month and so we are very excited that airlines such as Kenyan Airways will resume flights once again in October and allow our US guests to visit us too (subject to a negative COVID-19 test from the past 96 hours).

“Our teams have been at the forefront of ensuring we are welcoming back our guests with meticulous safety and hygiene measures, ensuring complete peace of mind and trust in everything we do.

“Guests can expect to see some slight changes around the camp, but we will never lose sight of the incredible experience we have always offered.  Guests can even stay at camp on a longer stay ‘work from home’ basis with the peace and serenity of the Kenyan bush as their backdrop, and the thrill of a game drive when it’s time to pack up work at the end of the day.

“The team in camp have been incredibly excited to finally be welcoming back guests and the wildlife are as prevalent as ever and certainly ready and waiting too!”

The camp opening was just in time for the world-famous migration and as it now patiently awaits the arrival of the migration to enter the Olare Motorogi Conservancy and right in the path of Mahali Mazuri itself in the coming weeks, guests are once again being treated to twice-daily game drives led by expert guides. With 12 luxurious tented suites that look out onto some of the world’s most stunning scenery, Mahali Mzuri offers a truly intimate experience amidst an astonishing natural spectacle.
