Mon Laferte – Amigos Simplemente

Mon Laferte premiered the video for “Amigos Simplemente” today, exclusively through Facebook. It’s a universally relatable love song as Mon sings of that moment when friendship begins to transform, and that simple affection you once felt becomes stronger.

“I want something with you, more than being friends… Let me love you or at least try. It is no coincidence to love you; it is not an accident,” the Chilean artist sings.

The latest single from Mon’s recent album Seis, “Amigos Simplemente” focuses on a young couple who slowly displays to us that there is something more to their relationship than being just simply friends. The premiere of the new video takes place ahead of Latino and Hispanic Heritage Month (LHHM), which is celebrated from September 15 to October 15. Throughout the month, Facebook will highlight stories from diverse artists and personalities from Latino and Hispanic communities that shape the culture of the United States. This year, Mon Laferte is one of the singers honored for her diverse contributions and achievements in America.

SEIS is an intensely personal album inspired by a documentary about Mexican-via Costa Rica singer Chavela Vargas, who is best known for revolutionizing Mexican ranchera music. The songs were born during the global pandemic and heavy isolation, and include carefully crafted lyrics, brought forth from self-reflection, allowing Mon to explore her deepest feelings, leaving nothing but vulnerability at this rare time.

Billboard calls SEIS, “Vulnerable and commanding” and VICE says, “It gives you chills, requiring no knowledge of Spanish to communicate its emotion… a gut-stomping triumph.” BBC Music says, “SEISis her most intimate and courageous yet; tackling complex topics such as misogyny, repression, and injustice, inspired by her lived experiences.”

Three Unlikely Peaky Blinders Fan Theories

The anticipation is continuing to grow ahead of the sixth Peaky Blinders series, as the stars of the hit BBC drama have been caught filming the show throughout the summer

However, conversations surrounding fan theories about what happens next have been rife since the dramatic ending of the previous season. Some are more unlikely than others, though. But, which scenarios look more unlikely than most when it comes to season six of Peaky Blinders?

Aberama Gold Is Alive

This is a theory that has been doing the rounds since the shocking ending to the fifth series. In that final episode, Aberama Gold was viciously killed by the Billy Boys, as Tommy Shelby’s plot to assassinate Oswald Mosley quickly fell apart.

Of course, the Blinders have a history of bringing characters back from the dead, with Arthur making his shocking return to bring down Luca Changretta. However, it is massively unlikely that Gold survived the attack on that night at the rally, despite many fans hoping for the happy ending that Aunt Polly deserves. Other fan theories have rumoured that John Shelby and Inspector Campbell could also return, but they also seem far-fetched.

Michael Gray Informed Mosley

The most pressing question that fans will have ahead of the final season is who exactly betrayed Tommy and gave Oswald the heads up that they were planning an attack. One name that has constantly been mentioned in that conversation is Michael Gray. Michael and Tommy’s relationship hit an all-time low in the fifth series, as Tommy was warned by the IRA that he wasn’t trustworthy. Michael constantly tried to seize control of the Blinders from Tommy, which led to a dramatic showdown between the two in the final episode.

Certainly, Michael wants to go higher in the gang and take control in the place of Tommy, but it looks almost impossible that he had anything to do with the plan going wrong. Most importantly, he wasn’t even in the loop when it came to the plan, which means that he wouldn’t have had the knowledge to tell Oswald what was going to happen. However, whether Tommy believes him is an entirely different question altogether.

Tommy Commits Suicide

The final scene before the credits was Tommy running into a field with the gun to his head screaming. Many fans feared that this would be the end of Tommy, as his mental health was deteriorating throughout the series, as he would constantly see Grace. However, it is massively unlikely that Tommy would have pulled the trigger, mainly through pride, as that would indicate that Oswald has come out on top in the battle between the two.

More likely, we will see Tommy come back stronger and more determined than ever to find out who the mole was. Arthur and Tommy will likely be at the front trying to find out who it was, while also taking on Oswald and the Billy Boys, and also keeping face for his political career.

GEORGE O’HANLON RELEASES HIS DEBUT EP – THE STORM

One of the UK’s most promising young songwriters, George O’Hanlon releases his debut EP, The Storm, and the brand-new feature single “This Town,” out now via Harvest Records. Listen to the full EP here.

Starting with a plaintive electric guitar-line and O’Hanlon’s soothing vocal, “This Town” slowly transforms into a taut rocker exploding into an emotive crescendo.

“’This Town’ was written about growing up in a certain kind of place and when it feels like there’s a certain path laid out for you and all you want to do is go the other way.” George elaborates.

“Years of work have gone into releasing this EP. the people I’ve met and worked with along the way have been incredible. For me the EP isn’t so much about the songs as it is me reaching a point in my life and doing something, I never thought I would,” he continues.

Featuring previous singles “The Weight” and “The Storm,” George’s debut EP is a stunning, sonic calling card for the 21-year-old songwriter. Each of the four tracks is an emotional vignette that demonstrates George’s ability to weave the pieces of everyday life into his evocative music.

Already winning fans at radio, George is picking up early support from the likes of Abi McMcarthy at BBC Introducing and Jack Saunders at Radio 1.

Inspired by the likes of Bob Dylan, Jeff Buckley and Thom Yorke, O’Hanlon’s song-writing is both literary and deeply personal, incorporating his own life experiences into his work while framing them from different perspectives.

Over the last few years O’Hanlon has been refining his playing and song writing and is now ready to share his music with the world. Following a few early gigs on the college circuit, George expanded out into a series of shows at grassroots venues, adding additional players to his live show and honing his live performance. He’s recently announced dates for his first ever UK tour in September.

Given the sheer power of his music, O’Hanlon looks set to establish himself as an exciting new talent to watch throughout 2021!

Schloss Elmau: The Destination Spa

Schloss Elmau, the destination spa, resort and cultural retreat in the Bavarian Alps, was featured in the most recent episode of “Amazing Hotels: Life Beyond The Lobby,” a series on BBC’s documentary streaming channel, BBC Select. In the most recent episode, the show’s hosts (chef Monica Galetti and food critic Giles Coren) explore Schloss Elmau’s sublime setting, visiting the hotel’s six lavish spas and taking in the alpine scenery from the comfort of infinity pools, saunas and saltwater pools. Giles Coren even braved the 15-degree plunge pool.

Schloss Elmau’s owner, Dietmar Mueller-Elmau, was featured in the episode discussing his vision for the resort’s wellness experience: “I tried to build a spa that I might be tempted to use myself. I like privacy; I like a sense of calm. So I need lots of space, lots of privacy, many different pools. I still haven’t used [the spa] though, because I think that the imagination of using it is better than the reality.”

Schloss Elmau is in good company among the hotels featured in the BBC series. These include the timeless Claridge’s in London, The Silo, Cape Town’s most stylish mainstay, and the beloved Ashford Castle in Ireland.

BLACK FEMALE ATHLETES FACE OLYMPIC DISCRIMINATION

Leading up to the postponed 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo—with opening ceremonies scheduled for Friday, July 23—the International Swimming Federation (or FINA, a shortening of the “Fédération Internationale de Natation”) has banned the use of swim caps specifically designed to fit the volume and texture of Black hair. Their reasoning for such a targeted and controversial ban seemingly lies in the cap’s novelty, leaving officials wondering how the product may affect different Olympic swimming events. (Many people have been quick to point out, however, that the larger size of these caps could actually cause more drag in the water rather than any sort of advantage.) In a statement, FINA said that, to their knowledge, “the athletes competing at international events never used, neither required, […] caps of such size and configuration.” Additionally, they took issue with the fact that the caps do not lay flat and tight across the head as other swim caps used by white athletes do.

The caps of interest were created by a Black-owned British company called Soul Cap. According to their website, their products are intended for “those with dreadlocks, weaves, hair extensions, braids, thick and curly hair” and are “designed with extra room in mind.” Their business—which was founded in 2017 and includes a variety of swimming-related haircare products for those “blessed with voluminous hair”—grew out of an understanding that the beauty industry was overlooking the needs of these individuals.

Preceding this controversy, Soul Cap had partnered with marathon swimmer Alice Dearing, the first Black female swimmer to represent Great Britain in the Olympic games. This partnership was intended to promote diversity in the world of swimming and help break down barriers for other minority swimmers who may be blocked from competing at the highest level. “Swimming as a sport hasn’t always been as accessible to people from minority communities,” Dearing said. “Increasing diversity in the water is a huge passion of mine, so with Soul Cap, […] we hope we can start to dispel those barriers.”

This decision to ban Soul Caps from the Olympics has caused public outrage among many swimmers, specifically swimmers of color. According to the BBC, one young swimmer said she was “heartbroken but not surprised” by FINA’s discriminatory action. Another swimmer, 17-year-old Kejai Terrelonge, said that swim caps made for thinner or untextured hair have posed perpetual problems throughout her athletic career. “Using the smaller swimming caps that everyone else would use—it would fit on my head, but because I put oil in my hair, when I was swimming it would just keep sliding off, and my hair would get wet,” she said. Since Black hair is naturally drier than other hair, exposure to chlorine and other chemicals in pool water can cause severe damage to hair. In 2019, Dearing herself even acknowledged that she “can fully understand why someone would quit [swimming] over their hair.”

Non-athletes have also joined in on this critique of FINA, taking to Twitter to voice their frustration. One user called the decision “cultural insensitivity on an international scale.” Another said, “this misguided notion of uniformity is the antithesis to inclusion.” “It’s 2021 and still there is ignorance about Black hair and naturalness,” said another Twitter user. “People who make decisions about Black hair should do the research first. Our hair may not be natural to you but it is to us!” This final sentence seems to be a direct response to another quote from FINA in which they said that Soul Caps do not “fit the natural form of the head.”

Unfortunately, this move to ban swim caps for Black hair has not been the only inequitable decision surrounding Black female athletes made by Olympic athletic committees. Last week, 21-year-old sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson was suspended from the Olympic team after testing positive for THC and thus failing her drug test. While marijuana is explicitly against the rules for competing athletes according to International Olympic Committee (IOC) standards, many people were outraged at Richardson’s suspension seeing as the drug is legal in Oregon (where Richardson ingested it) and the drug’s known effects are in no way performance-enhancing. Actor and outspoken supporter of marijuana Seth Rogen weighed in on Twitter, saying, “The notion that weed is a problematic ‘drug’ is rooted in racism. It’s insane that Team USA would disqualify one of the country’s most talented athletes over thinking that’s rooted in hatred.” 

In another Olympic-centered controversy, 18-year-old Namibian sprinters Christine Mboma and Beatrice Masilingi were withdrawn from the 400-meter race due to their “natural high testerone level[s],” according to the World Athletics governing body’s policy on Athletes with Differences of Sex Development. This policy states that women’s blood testosterone levels must be below 5 nanomoles per liter to compete in the 400-meter race, among other events. These new regulations were introduced in 2018, and the only proposed solution for these athletes is to lower their testosterone levels with medicine in order to compete. It is important to note that neither Mboma, Masilinigi, their families nor their coaches were aware of their hormonal condition prior to being tested.

As these debates that target the rights and Olympic potential of Black female athletes continue to unfold, FINA has announced it will review the original decision to ban Soul Caps from the summer games. In an official statement, FINA said that it is “committed to ensuring that all aquatics athletes have access to appropriate swimwear for competition where this swimwear does not confer a competitive advantage.” FINA also said that it plans to “speak with the manufacturer of the ‘Soul Cap’ about utilizing their products through the FINA Development Centers.” No further statements or decisions have been made at this time.

According to the official Olympics website, part of the IOC’s mission is “to act against any form of discrimination affecting the Olympic Movement” and “to encourage and support the promotion of women in sport at all levels and in all structures.” And yet, the past few weeks have revealed unflattering truths about the international world of athletics and the discrimination that athletes of color—specifically female athletes of color—repeatedly face in order to pursue their Olympic dreams. The IOC represents the highest standards of athletics and competition, and thus they must rise to the same standards when it comes to protecting, empowering and uplifting the athletes who participate.

Micro:bit and Raspberry Pi: What’s the Difference?

Back in 2016, the BBC delivered its first mini-computer to one million school children in the UK. Originally unveiled in the summer of 2015, the plan was for the computer to “…change the way children think about their ability to make things happen digitally,” according to then BBC director-general, Tony Hall. 

At the time of the BBC micro:bit’s launch, schools across the country had already been using Raspberry Pi in the classroom for a few years. The Pi was first launched in the UK in 2012 and in the nine years that have passed, this single-board computer has become part of a market that’s grown rapidly, with an estimated worth of $3.8 billion by 2027.

So, what’s the difference between the two? Read on to find out how they compare and what they offer. 

The BBC micro:bit – computers for curious kids

The BBC micro:bit was developed to help children master basic coding and give them the opportunity to gain an interest in programming early in their education. It is known for being basic – but that’s the point. Its purpose is to offer a user-friendly approach to coding for young people. 

This palm-sized mini-computer has a 25-LED matrix screen, two buttons, compass, accelerometer and Bluetooth. It also has 3 PINs so that it can be connected to external inputs and outputs like thermometers, lights, and buzzers. Last autumn, it received an upgrade, with new models featuring a speaker, microphone, and AI capability.

Crucially, it’s a microcontroller. This means that it has no interface that’s accessed by hooking it up to a monitor. Instead, you write a program on it computer and the code is uploaded to the board. 

The Raspberry Pi – computers for everyone

The Pi is a very different device to the micro:bit. This is a credit card-sized single-board microcomputer. Unlike the micro:bit, which is a microcontroller, the Pi has an interface that can be accessed by plugging it into a monitor. While the Raspberry Pi Foundation launched its first microcontroller – the Pi Pico – earlier this year, it’s still known for developing microcomputers. This is significantly different to the micro:bit. 

Another major difference is that the Pi is more advanced. It offers access to a range of applications that suit children and adults alike, with Scratch being a popular option among schoolchildren. 

However, the Pi can be used as a desktop, too. The latest model, the Pi 4, comes is fast enough to operate as a desktop replacement that works well for internet browsing, writing notes, and other basic functions. 

What’s the difference? 

BBC micro:bit was never meant to rival the Pi. In fact, it was designed as a steppingstone for children to learn the building blocks of coding before moving on to the more advanced Pi. 

It’s worth keeping this in mind if you’re trying to decide between the two. If you’re starting out in the world of coding and programming, the micro:bit has what you need. But if you’re planning a bigger project and have already laid the coding groundwork, the Raspberry Pi could be ideal.

Pattern Pusher is an energetic funk-soul three piece from the South West who create uplifting, inspiring and optimistic music that is hitting all the right notes in a world crying out for positivity.

Prior to the UK’s initial lockdown, they had just won the Glastonbury Pilton competition (judged by Michael Eavis), played in front of 8,000 people, supported Wolf Alice and completed an epic festival season playing the main stages at Bearded Theory and Beautiful Days.

The band is fronted by Alex Johnstone on the keys, whose soaring soulful vocals are evocative of Donny Hathaway and Ray Charles, while Benny G’s wild energy on the bass and Benny C’s grooving drum rhythms underpin an unconventional line up with a classic sound. Their crusade of happiness has earned them a loyal fan base, accolades from BBC Radio 6, support from BBC Introducing, and a string of festival shows; now lining up on the same bills as their idols.

New single Come Along is the band’s first release in over a year. Both lyrically and sonically the song is looking to a brighter future, after a tough time for society, helping each other out and feeling hopeful for better days ahead. They worked with producer John Waddell in Oxford and the song was mixed by the legendary Chris Sheldon (Foo Fighters, Biffy Clyro).

Bursting into life with driving keys and a pulsating bass line, the single is sure to be an anthem for the summer, injecting some much-needed positivity into a music scene that has suffered a great deal over the last year.

The band recently gave ‘Come Along’ its first public performance as part of the online Music Feeds concert headlined by Liam GallagherBlossoms and Sam Smith that raised over £1 million for charity. Recorded in their own studio, the session earned them the accolade of the best performance of the night from many of the concert viewers and they are now in talks with the organizers James about accompanying them on live dates.

Their forthcoming album is already attracting significant industry attention. Pattern Pusher have recently signed a management deal and have already landed their first big sync placement with Guessable on Comedy Central.

Generating 50 million-plus streams on release day, it also achieved “the biggest first day streaming debut for any album on Spotify this year” and marked her fourth consecutive album to exceed 50 million Spotify streams in 24 hoursFearless (Taylor’s Version) also becomes the first country album by a female artist to reach #1 on Apple Music’s US Albums chart.
 
In addition to capturing #1 on the Billboard Top 200, #1 on the Billboard Top Album Sales chart and #1 on the Billboard Country Albums chart, it went #1 in the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland. Physical sales of Fearless (Taylor’s Version) outsold the remaining combined total physical sales of the UK Top 15. The permanent downloads also bested the remaining combined total permanent downloads of the Top 70. She shattered her own record for the second time in the last year as “the first and only female artist to garner 7 #1 studio albums in the UK this century. Additionally, she has gathered “the 3rd Most #1 albums in the UK by a female artist.
 
Down Under, Taylor is now “the first artist to release three #1 albums in a 12-month period in Australia.” Taylor is the first artist to have three different albums top the ARIA Charts in a twelve-month period. She bests her own record of “the shortest span of #1 albums in Australia” with only 17 weeks between evermore and Fearless (Taylor’s Version). Her previous record was 20 weeks between folklore and evermore. With eight total #1 albums in Australia, she is second for “female artist with most #1 albums” only behind Madonna and just behind Eminem for “most consecutive #1 albums.” At radio, “Mr. Perfectly Fine (Taylor’s Version)” bows in the Top 10 on the Airplay Chart.

For the very first time, this updated release offers audio-only versions of the songs featured on ‘A Tribute to Amy Winehouse by Jools Holland’ and the ‘BBC One Sessions Live at Porchester Hall,’ and so a high proportion of these tracks will be completely new to digital music services. “Stronger Than Me,” “Tears Dry on Their Own” and “You Know I’m No Good” will be available on March 24 on streaming services, and the video for “Stronger Than Me” will be available on YouTube. This comprehensive collection captures the strong and enduring relationship that Amy enjoyed with the BBC and is further proof of quite what an extraordinarily talented, completely original, and truly engaging performer Amy was.

Amy Winehouse At The BBC includes Amy’s earliest BBC Radio sessions, music from her first-ever TV performances, as well as unheard gems, rarities, unique covers, and live versions of classic songs from “Frank” and “Back to Black.” The set also includes a beautifully illustrated 20-page booklet featuring rare photographs.

Disc 1 is a selection of recordings chosen by Later presenter, songwriter, and much-loved musician Jools Holland. Idris Elba × HarperCollins

Iconic and multi-award-winning actor, musician, filmmaker, and activist Idris Elba has signed a global multi-book deal with HarperCollins to publish a range of children’s books launching in 2022.

In a major UK/US co-publication deal, world rights were acquired by Ann-Janine Murtagh, Executive Publisher, HCCB UK, and Suzanne Murphy, President, and Publisher, HCCB US, from Crystal Mahey-Morgan at OWN IT! Entertainment Ltd.

Publishing will include picture books and fiction featuring a character and world imagined and developed by Idris and his writing partner Robyn Charteris, who has written numerous live-action drama, pre-school and animation programs for BBC, Channel 4, the Jim Henson Company, and Endemol as well as educational theatre for schools. Idris Elba said, “I feel privileged to have the opportunity to bring stories inspired by my daughter to life with my incredible partner Robyn Charteris, and the powerhouse team at HarperCollins.”

Golden Globe and SAG winning Idris Elba captivates audiences as an actor, producer, and director, and continually secures his position as the one to watch in Hollywood. He is the first actor to receive dual SAG awards in one evening.

Idris’s career skyrocketed on the small screen in some of the UK’s top-rated shows. Soon after, he landed the role of Stringer Bell in HBO’s critically acclaimed series The Wire (NAACP Image Award nomination). In 2010, Idris landed the title role on the BBC mini-series Luther, which earned him a Golden Globe, SAG Award, and four Emmy nominations. In 2005, he began his film career; his credits include American Gangster (Golden Globe nomination), Mandela: The Long Walk to Freedom (Golden Globe nomination), Beasts of No Nation (SAG Award, Golden Globe nomination), and the Oscar-nominated film Molly’s Game.  He can be seen this April in the Netflix film Concrete Cowboy, which he also produced, and this summer will be starring in The Suicide Squad 2.  Other upcoming films include The Harder They Fall and Three Thousand Years of Longing.

Behind the camera, Idris made his feature-film directorial debut at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival with Yardie. In 2013, he founded his production company, Green Door Pictures, to champion diversity of thought. With Green Door, Idris released the documentary Mandela, My Dad and Me, produced the TV mini-series Guerrilla for Showtime, and created, produced, and appears in the Sky comedy series In the Long Run. He also created, produced, and starred in the Netflix comedy series Turn Up Charlie.

ROBYN CHARTERIS

Robyn began her career writing educational theatre for schools and charitable organizations internationally before graduating to television. For television she has written on numerous live-action drama, pre-school, and animation programs for the BBC, Channel 4, the Jim Henson Company, Channel 5, Initial Kids (Endemol), Carlton TV, Gullane, Hit Entertainment, Granada, SABC, Urban Brew, Disney, and M-Net.

Her credits include a BAFTA-winning children’s drama series for CBBC, creating and writing one of the first original 52-episode pre-school series for the launch of the digital channel CBeebies, creative consultancy for Mattel Toys and Lego, and a master’s degree in Playwriting.
