Honoring Marvel’s George Pérez

Last year, the comic industry lost one of its most exemplary storytellers, artist George Pérez. During his illustrious career at Marvel Comics, George’s talents graced the pages of Avengers, Fantastic Four, and many more. His contributions to some of comic books’ most inspirational sagas like Infinity Gauntlet and his seminal run on New Teen Titans will ensure his artwork will live on for generations for fans to enjoy, and later this year, Marvel Comics will celebrate that impact with a new line of variant covers. Working with his estate, Marvel Comics has collected rare drawings from George’s archives and starting in June, these pieces will beautifully restored, colored, and showcased on the covers of select Marvel releases. These covers spotlight George’s legendary depictions of Marvel’s greatest heroes, giving fans an opportunity to reflect on his groundbreaking work on the genre.

“George Pérez may no longer be with us, but his work is immortal. And so it’s a delight to be able to share these seldom-seen pieces by George done throughout his career with all of his legions of fans,” Marvel VP Executive Editor Tom Brevoort said.

“George loved his fans. He loved meeting them and he loved drawing for them. His joy was evident in every smile, hug and stroke of his pen,” Constance Eza of The George Perez Trust shared. “We are beyond thrilled and grateful that Marvel has conceived of this cover program to showcase some of his commissioned works to be enjoyed by fans the world over. We miss him terribly, but his art is part of a legacy that will continue to resonate for years to come. We hope you enjoy these never before published covers!”

ADAM WARLOCK’S LIVE-ACTION DEBUT

It’s an exciting year for fans of Marvel Comics’ greatest cosmic heroes! In addition to the launch of an all-new comics run of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY by Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, and Kev Walker this April, the team will also star in their latest Marvel Cinematic Universe outing, Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The highly-anticipated film will feature the live-action debut of ADAM WARLOCK. Just announced at Entertainment Weekly, two of the comic book industry’s most innovative and exciting creators are teaming up to reshape the Marvel Universe as you know it! This June, join writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Bryan Hitch in ULTIMATE INVASION, a revolutionary four-issue saga that presents a surprising new chapter for Ultimate Comics and bold new strides for Marvel’s iconic heroes.

Launched over twenty years ago, the Ultimate Universe provided a contemporary take on classic Marvel characters and storylines. Known for its edginess and explosive action, the Ultimate Universe was home to some of Marvel’s most talked about and thought-provoking series of the 21^st century. X-Men × Captain Marvel VS. BROOD

THE X-MEN AND CAPTAIN MARVEL JOIN FORCES TO PUT AN END TO MARVEL’S MOST TERRIFYING ALIEN RACE IN REVENGE OF THE BROOD!

Upcoming issues of X-MEN and CAPTAIN MARVEL will intersect as they both deal with the emerging threat of the BROOD!

The parasitic predators known as the Brood have returned to the Marvel Universe in a big way and their latest plan to infect the cosmos will be both Captain Marvel and the X-Men’s biggest nightmare!

Currently unfolding in the pages of Kelly Thompson’s acclaimed run of CAPTAIN MARVEL, Carol Danvers has taken to the stars to answer a distress call, only to confront horrors at the hands of her vengeful old enemies—the Brood! Luckily for Captain Marvel, she won’t be alone! Not only will the story arc guest-star various X-Men including Rogue, Gambit, and Wolverine, but Gerry Duggan’s ongoing X-MEN title will connect with CAPTAIN MARVEL starting in February’s X-MEN #19. Joined by artist Stefano Caselli, the arc will see the X-Men realizing that despite their efforts, the Brood are still a major threat that needs to be put down quickly and permanently.

Titled “Revenge of the Brood” and “Lord of the Brood,” both arcs represent a reunion of sorts as Captain Marvel and the X-Men fought alongside eachother in the original Brood Saga by Chris Claremont, Dave Cockrum and Paul Smith. The iconic adventure changed Captain Marvel forever as she unlocked her Binary form and saw the X-Men make some of their most intense sacrifices. This latest war with the Brood will pack the same emotional punch and once again, neither parties will walk away unscathed!

In “Lord of the Brood,” the X-Men get a distress call from deep space and find that the galaxy’s Brood problem is not as solved as they’d thought! When the X-Men’s close friend Broo became the Brood King, he gained the ability to control the savage alien race he was both a part of and so different from. Now he is experiencing his own nightmare scenario – the Brood are killing his friends, and there is nothing he can do to stop it! Rogue Brood factions have begun running wild, and it’s up to the X-Men to get to the bottom of why!

In “Revenge of the Brood,” Carol Danvers is on an X-press elevator to her own personal hell! And the Brood Empress is determined to ensure the Captain and all of her friends make it to their destination. Rescuing their team and getting out alive has always been the goal, but the odds are more deeply stacked against her team than Carol can even imagine. Overwhelmed and trapped in the Brood’s backyard, Captain Marvel and her team are forced to sacrifice one of their own. But the Brood let Carol through their clutches once before, and in so doing, created one of their worst enemies. They won’t make that mistake again.

To mark the occasion, upcoming issues of both series will have one giant connecting cover by Juan Frigeri that will run on CAPTAIN MARVEL #46-48 and X-MEN #19-21. This new Captain Marvel/X-Men epic will then conclude in CAPTAIN MARVEL #49 where both stories will converge in a galaxy-changing finale!

“I have been wanting to write the Brood and have some X-Men guest stars since we started this CAPTAIN MARVEL run in 2019!” Thompson told CBR in an recent interview. “The Brood were off the table for a long time due to some changes to their role in the Marvel Universe — and that was true, a little, of the X-Men too. So it’s really exciting to have all of it coming together finally in one story — our biggest Captain Marvel story yet — feels right, y’know? It especially feels right because The Brood are truly [some] of Carol’s greatest nemeses. [Considering] how we’ve been pushing on her powers, her role in the Marvel Universe, and her commitment to being a hero –it feels like things all coming to a head.”

“The Brood are back, and they’re worse than ever,” Duggan explained. “The X-Men must make some hard choices about their pest control services, and what about Broo, the former student at the X-Mansion, we thought he was the Lord Of The Brood? The problems are galactic and it’s all hands on deck including Captain Marvel, Rogue, Gambit and Polaris. Check for parasites.”

MARVEL’S VOICES: WAKANDA FOREVER

Announced today at New York Comic Con, the Marvel’s Voices anthology series returns in February 2023 with MARVEL’S VOICES: WAKANDA FOREVER.

The special one-shot arrives just in time to celebrate Black History Month and puts the spotlight on iconic heroes of Wakanda. Black Panther, Shuri, Okoye, and more star in all-new stories by an incredible lineup of both fan-favorite creators and talent fresh to the Marvel Universe. Join them as they grow the inimitable world of Wakanda in these tales of myth, adventure, strife, and more! Creative teams for the book will be announced soon.

The Marvel Universe is known for creating stories that reflect “the world outside your window.” For the past five years, Marvel’s Voices has worked to not only give a behind-the-page look at the creators of those stories but highlight the richness that makes up the Marvel Universe. Today, for the first time, Marvel brought that to New York Comic Con.

The first-ever NYCC Marvel’s Voices panel was hosted by writer, editor, and podcast host Angélique Roché who was joined by Eve L. Ewing (Monica Rambeau: Photon), John Jennings (My Super Hero is Black), Danny Lore (Crypt of Shadows), Steve Orlando (Marauders), Cody Ziglar (Miles Morales: Spider-Man), and Marvel’s Voices Editor Sarah Brunstad.

“Ever since we first started bringing Marvel’s Voices into our comics back in 2020, it’s been so inspiring to see our stories grow and evolve, bringing up a fantastic lineup of new characters and creators,” said Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski. “Looking ahead to 2023, we’re excited to expand the anthology series to broaden our focus on characters and families, giving our writers, editors, and readers more stories and more characters in the grand tradition of Marvel’s Voices.”

Beyond the comics, fans can continue to follow Marvel’s Voices in 2023 with the ongoing Marvel’s Voices Walmart Artist Series, more “Marvel’s Voices” podcast seasons, weekly Marvel Unlimited’s Infinity Comics, licensed books, variant cover art programs, and so much more. THE NEW ARC OF THOR

THE NEW ARC OF THOR SHEDS LIGHT ON THANOS’ DARK HISTORY WITH ASGARD!

Guest writer Torunn Grønbekk and returning artist Nic Klein kick off “The Legacy of Thanos” in THOR #29, on sale in December.

In the opening arc of Donny Cates and Nic Klein’s hit run of THOR, fans witnessed a disturbing vision of the Mad Titan Thanos laying waste to the Marvel Universe! Since then, Thor has done everything in his power to prevent this future from coming to pass, but has it been enough? Find out as this brewing plot comes to the forefront in a brand new arc starting December titled “The Legacy of Thanos.” The arc will be penned by guest writer Torunn Grønbekk who will join returning series artist and newly christened Stormbreaker Nic Klein for an adventure starring Thor and the Valkyrie Rúna. The arc will spin directly out of THANOS: DEATH NOTES, the oversized Thanos one-shot hitting stands in November, and it will serve as a pivotal prelude to Cates and Klein’s future plans for Thanos’ upcoming conquest.

When a universally loathed foe kidnaps Thor’s baby sister Laussa and drags her so deep beyond Hel that not even Sif’s All-Sight can see her, the God of Thunder must call upon the one ally who has traveled so far into the unknown before: Rúna. But what dark secrets of Asgard’s bloody past lay beneath the frozen waters?

“There is something incredibly inventive and bold about Donny and Nic’s Thor, and it’s been an absolute delight to guest-write a story for this run,” Grønbekk said. “It’s turning out to be just the kind of thing I love – big swings, solid character moments and deeply human solutions. Also, Nic is impossibly good. There is a special kind of joy to see his pages come together. I don’t think I’ve ever had this much fun making comics!”

DEADPOOL IS BACK
