Stranger Things Meets FREAKS

The final two episodes of “Stranger Things 4” premiere on July 1st, with Vecna revealed, Eleven on the verge of getting her powers back, and new gates opening between Hawkins and the Upside Down, Stranger Things is nearing not only the conclusion of its fourth season, but its series end.

Have no fear – Stranger Things fans can read the new series FREAKS by Brett Riley. Critically acclaimed science fiction and horror writer Brett Riley is also back with TRAVELERS [Imbrifex Books, ISBN: 9781945501470], the second installment in his young adult superhero series, due out August 2, 2022. Riley, an American literature professor and award-winning screenwriter, is known for exceptional storytelling, which The Wall Street Journal  sums up as “knowing how to keep the action rolling.”

In TRAVELERS, the self-dubbed “Freaks” are now high school sophomores and back in class in quiet Quapaw City, Arkansas. They grapple with the ordinary challenges of everyday teen life: cliques, cars, and crushes. While everything appears normal on the surface, looks have rarely been more deceiving. A secret government taskforce—fully aware of the unusual powers the Freaks have acquired—is determined to capture them. Even as the mysterious Baltar Sterne shares ancient wisdom and offers hope, a new menace silently emerges in the woods outside of town. Clever, inexorable, and far more lethal than the Freaks’ first superhuman foe, this traveler from another world possesses powers that can only be described as godlike. The Freaks and their town will be tested in horrific ways they are powerless to predict or even imagine.

Fans of Stranger Things and X-Men will enjoy both FREAKS and TRAVELERS, fast-paced action novels thick with suspense and teenage drama. TRAVELERS  is also a tale of gaining self-awareness, learning the true meaning of friendship, and avoiding the unexpected pitfalls of possessing superpowers.

THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF NEW MUTANTS

NEW MUTANTS 40TH ANNIVERSARY

In 1982, X-Men visionary Chris Claremont and legendary comic book artist Bob McLeod expanded the mutant mythos with the first of many X-Men spinoff books: NEW MUTANTS. Introducing the next generation of mutantkind with hard-hitting, thrilling coming-of-age adventures, the series represented a profound shift for the franchise and is celebrated for its diverse and layered cast of characters and its influential, and at times experimental, storytelling. Over the last 40 years, NEW MUTANTS has continued to be a timeless yet contemporary voice for the marginalized youth who must grow up in a harsh, cruel world. This September, Marvel Comics is proud to honor the anniversary of this groundbreaking series with a supersized issue! Crafted by current series writer Vita Ayala, NEW MUTANTS #30 will be a mosaic love letter dedicated to the mutant youngsters who have become the beacon and hope of a new generation of X-Men. Commemorating classic and new characters alike, this collection of shorts featuring artwork by talents such as Alex Lins, Jason Loo, Emma Kubert, and more, celebrates four decades’ worth of the joys and tribulations of being young, brave, and gifted in the world of X.

In honor of the book’s anniversary issue, McCleod has returned to his creation, showcasing the team’s original roster on a new variant cover.

“So many fans have come up to me at conventions and told me what a huge impact the New Mutants had on them in their teen years, and how relatable they were in all of their diversity. Native Americans, African Americans, and Kentuckians, all finally see themselves represented in the comics. It’s been very humbling,” McCleod said of the team’s impact. “Our New Mutants have gone through so many changes over the decades that I often didn’t recognize them as the same characters we created. So I was very pleased to get the chance to come full circle and do a variant cover homage to their very first published appearance on the cover of AMAZING HEROES #16. I hope fans continue to enjoy them for another 40 years!”

The issue will also feature a fourth-wall-breaking short by special guest writer Alyssa Wong, starring one of the most popular characters to debut in the series—Deadpool!

“What an honor to come aboard NEW MUTANTS for its 40th anniversary!” Wong said. “NEW MUTANTS is such a delight. It’s gonna be a party–so of course, I’m bringing Deadpool.”Check out the cover below and stay tuned for more news, including story details and creative announcements, about this monumental NEW MUTANTS issue coming in September! A.X.E: JUDGEMENT DAY

Years of tension and secrets between the heroes of the Marvel Universe will erupt into an emotional and apocalyptic war in A.X.E.: JUDGMENT DAY, the latest Marvel Comics crossover event coming this summer. Written by mastermind talent Kieron Gillen and featuring the grand-scale artwork of Valerio Schiti and color artist Marte Gracia, A.X.E.: JUDGMENT DAY will be a six-issue series that will spin out into multiple limited series, one-shots, and tie-in issues of your favorite ongoing series. The extraordinary odyssey will tie together radical plot developments that have been brewing in the pages of AVENGERS, ETERNALS, and X-MEN titles and leave a monumental impact on these three factions and their relationships with eachother moving forward.

The Avengers have become a more powerful global force than ever from their base inside a long-dead Celestial. The X-Men have achieved a form of immortality on their utopian island nation of Krakoa. And the Eternals have begun a new cycle of life as they continue their sworn mission to eliminate the Deviants. But when the Eternals learn that mutantkind itself is a form of excess deviation, a vicious assault on Krakoa ensues – with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes trapped in the middle. Get your glimpse at the opening battles in the all-new A.X.E.: JUGDMENT DAY #1 trailer, featuring never-before-seen artwork.

“Honestly, for me, speaking as a reader as much as a writer, there’s nothing worse than an event that comes out of nowhere,” Gillen said in a recent interview with Popverse. “It had to come from the books. So yeah, I was looking at the Avengers, what Jason [Aaron] has built in the mythology there. I was looking at the X-Books, the secrets of Krakoa coming to light, and I was looking at what I was doing in Eternals, which dances with both of them, the various tensions in Eternal society there. And now, that’s stuff going to blow up. It’s just that kind of ‘Oh, look, these are three logical strains that are intersecting, let’s then bring them forth and see what happens with them.'”

Check out the new trailer now and be there for the latest Marvel Comics epic when A.X.E.: JUDGMENT DAY #1 arrives on July 20. And don’t miss the exciting buildup in a special prelude issue, A.X.E.: EVE OF JUDGMENT #1, as well as current issues of AVENGERS, ETERNALS, IMMORTAL X-MEN, and X-MEN.

Marvel Judgment Day

From the revolutionary writer Kieron Gillen and legendary artist Valerio Schiti comes JUDGMENT DAY, the new Marvel Comics blockbuster that opens up the Marvel Universe like you’ve never seen it before.

Working on projects such as ETERNALS and IMMORTAL X-MEN, we see Gillen defining a brand-new storyline with the addition of Jason Aaron and Javier Garron’s AVENGERS. These three iconic Marvel sets come together to create intense expansions. Schiti, master narrator in the likes of EMPYRE and INFERNO, generates a new era of adventure in the Marvel universe when these Super Hero icons meet. JUDGMENT DAY serves as a fresh experience in the realm of Marvel Comics.

The story starts when the X-Men have gained full immortality, with mutants overlooking everyone on the globe. We find the Eternals uncovering information about their own species, with some shocking and destructive information uncovered about mutants. The Avengers face encounters with the Celestials as they use a plunged Celestial to discover more secrets of the kind. While the Eternals go after the mutant nation of Krakoa, the Avengers work to stop a possible apocalyptic war. The dispute turns out to be anything but easy, as new characters emerge on all sides as the people of the Marvel Universe are judged for what they must face.

Gillen spoke on JUDGMENT DAY, stating, “There’s a classic metaphor to describe the Marvel Universe – a toybox, which creators take toys out of, play with and put back. I get it, but it’s never quite how I’ve seen it – I think ‘play’ in another way. I think of a music shop, with all these instruments with their different qualities suggesting different songs, different stories. For all the Marvel instruments I’ve played, I’ve never written an event. Writing an event is something different. It’s not like playing an instrument. It’s having all the instruments in the Marvel music shop. That’s not like writing a song. That’s like writing a symphony.

“I looked at everything in ETERNALS and IMMORTAL X-MEN and everything else all the X and Avengers writers have done and thought… yeah, this is an event. In fact, an event is the only way to do justice to this. The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson described the music he was reaching for as Teenage Symphonies to God. I think that’s what the best Marvel Events aspire to be, and it’s what we’re aspiring to here. I want the scale. I want the heartbreak . I want a book that wears its heart on its sleeve even as it puts a fist in your face. I want something Wagnerian in its volume as emotional as God Only Knows.”

Schiti, too, added to the conversation, while stating, “It is great to have the opportunity to draw another Marvel event after Empyre. The difference is that last time I was just excited, but now I know how high the expectations are, so now I am both excited and a bit scared! Luckily for me I have the great Kieron Gillen and Marte Gracia watching my back and together we can face any cosmic threat!”

Make sure you take full advantage of FREE COMIC BOOK DAY: AVENGERS/X-MEN #1 on May 7 to get your first glimpse on the hit. Get ready for more news surrounding JUDGMENT day and upcoming issues of ETERNALS, IMMORTAL X-MEN, X-MEN and AVENDERS in the new few weeks. For more info, visit Marvel.com.
