UD Trucks unveiled a new Euro 5 range for the well-established Quester (heavy-duty) and Croner (medium-duty) trucks. Ensuring Businesses Stay Competitive in a Changing World with Euro 5

Air pollution is one of the largest health threats facing the world. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) global energy review 2021, global energy carbon emissions are projected to rebound in the post-COVID era to grow by 4.8%. This would represent the largest single increase in over a decade. Emissions from transportation alone are at risk of increasing global emission levels by over 1.5%.

Moving towards cleaner fleets is imperative. Euro 5 reduces NOx emissions by about 43% compared to Euro 4 and significantly reduces the carbon footprint of the vehicle through cleaner emissions.

Papdakis Racing Toyotas Dominate in Formula Drift

Rockstar Energy Toyota driver Fredric Aasbo scored victory in St. Louis after an all-Toyota, all-Nitto Tire Final battle with teammate Ryan Tuerck. The one-two finish narrows the points standings as the Formula Drift series returns to California for the final two rounds of the season.

“I love this place,” said Aasbo after coming out on top in the Rockstar Energy Toyota GR Supra in St. Louis. “I think it was clear for everyone to see that Ryan had me tonight—until he didn’t anymore—and hats off to Ryan and the team for a fantastic performance this weekend.”

Aasbo and Tuerck were the drivers to beat in St. Louis and they delivered an incredible show of skill in the opening corners of their Final battle. But a misstep from Tuerck saw him tap the wall with his Gumout/Nitto Tire/Mobil 1 Toyota Corolla hatchback and the battle win went to Aasbo. Their one-two result was a repeat of last year’s St. Louis performance—a mighty debut in their debut outing as teammates.

“To see both Fredric and Ryan line up for the Final together is very rewarding,” said team owner Stephan Papadakis. “Both sides of the tent came together to make it happen and it is great to see everybody with champagne in hand at the end of the night.”

The St. Louis win narrows the points gap at the top of the championship and both drivers are in the hunt for the title with just two rounds to go. Aasbo currently sits third—just 19 points off the lead. Tuerck is a close fourth. The victory brings Aasbo’s record-setting career wins tally to 16. The road to the podium was not easy for either driver, and a new track configuration at World Wide Technology Raceway led to close battles, door-to-door contact and one-more-time calls throughout the competition.

Aasbo qualified third on Friday and advanced past Kyle Mohan Saturday in the opening round, then Wataru Masuyama in the Top 16. He took a one-more-time battle to advance past veteran Mike Essa in the Great 8. Aasbo lined up against long-time rival Vaughn Gittin Jr. in the Final 4, but the battle was cut short after a mechanical problem for the Ford driver saw him concede the match.

Tuerck first faced Jonathan Nerren, then Chris Forsberg, before meeting Alec Robbins in the Great 8. In the Final 4, he flew through a battle with Dylan Hughes to advance to the Final, where he lined up against Aasbo for the deciding match.

“That’s twice we’ve met as teammates in the Final here in St. Louis,” said Tuerck. “It’s always a good time when you’re battling somebody you trust and who you know has a great car under them. It was awesome and I can’t be mad at second place.”

In addition to the Driver’s championship race, the Papadakis Racing team is leading the charge for manufacturer partner Toyota, which has the Formula Drift Auto Cup title within reach. Partner Nitto Tire leads the Tire Cup.

Next up for the Papadakis Racing Toyota team is a return home to Los Angeles for an exciting Round 6 on the Streets of Long Beach September 17-18. The season finale takes place at Irwindale Speedway October 22-23.

Last season saw Aasbo and Tuerck score a combined seven podiums in eight rounds of competition, including three outright wins. The Papadakis Racing team began drifting in 2004 and is the most winning team in Formula Drift history, earning the 2015 title with driver Fredric Aasbo, as well as back-to-back championship titles with driver Tanner Foust in 2007 and 2008.

Drifting is a high-skill, high-powered motorsport with an emphasis on car control. In the Formula Drift series, drivers compete in knockout heats on a closed course, sliding sideways in trials judged on speed and style. With origins in Japan the sport has rapidly grown to one of the most popular youth-oriented motorsports in the world. Here in the United States, Formula Drift events routinely host capacity crowds, while livestreamed multi-platform broadcasts attract millions of online viewers.

The RIMAC NEVERA

RIMAC NEVERA IS THE WORLD’S FASTEST ACCELERATING PRODUCTION CAR

While on its way to its American debut at ‘The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering’ in California, the Rimac Nevera made a quick stop at the drag strip at Famoso Raceway. Back in June, it set the unofficial world record for the fastest accelerating production car but now, with Famoso Raceway officials and the experts from DragTimes, it was time to do it again.

Driven by Brooks Weisblat from Dragtimes, with standard Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres – just like every Nevera – the car lined up at Famoso drag strip, with the air temperature at 37oC/98F and track temperature at 65oC/149F.

With its Launch Control engaged – done by simply putting your left foot on the brake and flooring the accelerator – the Nevera prepared to unleash the full force of its 1,914hp powertrain through four separate electric motors. Having lifted a foot off the brake, the Nevera’s advanced control systems, including Rimac All-Wheel Torque Vectoring 2, constantly monitored which wheels had the most grip, portioning out the power to minimize wheelspin and maximize acceleration as it launched down the strip.

And in just a blink of an eye, the Nevera set the ¼-mile in a production car world record time of 8.582 seconds, at a top speed of 167.51mph. The run was the eleventh of the day in quick succession, without any performance degradation between the runs, and can be seen in full on the Dragtimes YouTube channel.

Nevera’s previous unofficial world record quarter-mile time for a production car was set at 8.62 seconds earlier this year during testing in Croatia on an unprepared airstrip. Rimac has now beaten its own record and produced times that can be independently verified by third parties – with lots of performance still to be unlocked through over-the-air software updates.

Miroslav Zrnčević, Test and Development Driver said:

“This was our first test on a VHT (glued) surface, so we did not know what to expect. At first we were hitting less than expected ¼ mile times (8,7 and 8,8 seconds) than we did on a normal, non prepped surface in Europe. The track temperature was 65oC and we had to do some adjustments. Our traction control learns the surface on each run and adjusts the torques on the wheels. After some adjustments and different tire warm up strategies we managed to get better results. Brooks helped with his experience of staging the car and we managed to set the world record for the fastest accelerating production car and also beat our own ¼-mile record. Still, we are confident that the Nevera has much more to give and that we can go even quicker with more experience and testing on this kind of surface. We will be back.”

Scuderia Ferrari × Dynisma – New Simulator

Scuderia Ferrari Mission Winnow’s new simulator is completed

The new Scuderia Ferrari simulator is in its new home. The fitting out of the facility and the commissioning of the simulator was completed this week in a new building that sits between the main office of the Gestione Sportiva and the Fiorano Track. In the coming weeks, the calibration work will be carried out and then, at some point in September, after the summer break required by the sporting regulations, the real work will begin, supporting the design phase of the 2022 car.

The new simulator is absolutely at the cutting edge in the field of vehicle dynamics simulation and reproduces in a 360° environment, the lowest latency, and the highest bandwidth motion cueing of any motion simulator available on the market. It is based on a completely new concept– the result of a collaboration between Scuderia Ferrari and Dynisma, a UK-based independent company headed up by former Ferrari engineer Ash Warne. It has been developed exclusively for the Maranello team.

“Simulation and digital technology are going to play an ever more important role in the development of a Formula 1 car and we believe we have made the best possible choice, focusing on creating a tool that will enable us to make a generational leap in this sector,” commented Gianmaria Fulgenzi, Scuderia Ferrari‘s Head of Supply Chain. “To produce it, we chose Dynisma, a young and dynamic company. It has taken two years to complete this project and now we are ready to start using it on the 674 project, which is the name given to the car that will be produced based on the new technical regulations that come into force in 2022.”

Toyota Produces Lowest Number of Vehicles in Nearly Ten Years

Toyota Produced Lowest Number Of Vehicles In Almost A Decade – 7.55M Vehicles In FY 2021

Global mobility was essentially halted by COVID-19 in 2020 resulting in a huge financial downturn for even the giants of the car manufacturing industry. According to data presented by Trading Platform, Toyota produced its lowest number of vehicles in almost a decade – 7.55M units in FY ending March 2021.

Toyota Motor Corporation or more popularly known as simply Toyota is a car manufacturer from Japan founded in 1937. As of July 2014, Toyota was the largest listed company from Japan based on market capitalization, a ranking it still holds as of writing. Toyota was also listed by Forbes as the 42nd largest company in the world based on market cap.

However, even the giants of Japanese car manufacturing were not immune to the crippling effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. In its financial year (FY) ending in March 2021, Toyota only produced 7.55M units of vehicles compared to 8.82M in FY 2020. FY 2021’s figure is also the lowest number of vehicles produced by Toyota since FY 2012 when Toyota only produced 7.44M vehicles.

Toyota Sold Most Cars In North America But Generated Largest Revenue From Japan in FY 2021

North America is Toyota’s most lucrative market, accounting for 2.7M vehicle sales in FY 2020. In FY 2021, vehicle sales in North America dropped by 14.74% to just 2.31M. Toyota’s Asia (excluding Japan) market experienced the largest contraction out of it its largest markets with a 23.63% drop in FY 2021 to just 1.22M vehicles sold compared to 1.6M in FY 2020.

Toyota’s revenue across its sales regions differed greatly due to the varying conditions of the pandemic around the globe. Its home market of Japan was Toyota’s largest source of revenue in FY 2021 with almost ¥15T or almost $137B. Its North American market generated the second-highest revenue from its sales regions with ¥9.49T or around $87 in FY 2021.

Jason Lubken is an established and celebrated car photographer whose work shows his great appreciation for car design and storytelling. No matter the subject or setting, Jason has always made an effort to be evocative and nostalgic with his photos. He gained an entirely new appreciation for cars when he decided to build his own. 

It all started when Jason’s friend Derek rescued a scrapped ‘63 Chevy Impala. The moment Jason saw it, he was determined to rescue it from the hands of time and bring it back to life with the help of his friends. In just a year, Jason was able to take it on the road and achieve his goal with a brand new outlook and appreciation of retro cars.

The heart of this story is not just about another old car getting put back on the road or the sequence of events that made it possible. Yes – it takes passion, hard work, and dedication, but throughout life, you meet a lot of friends, and in the process, you figure out how to hold on to the good ones. Every part of this car will always be a token of that positivity.

What truly puts this car back on the road is having a support system willing to help get it there. I don’t just mean buddies willing to help bolt parts together in the wee hours of the night. Zach Raddatz not only fronted me half the money to buy the car and engine components, he blueprinted and assembled a reliable 400hp small block Chevy. Derek Turner, one of the most talented enthusiast builders I know, sold me the car. He turned around and showed me how to build it every step of the way.

It takes time too. It’s taking 8hr long road trips on work nights to score a bumper and fenders or spending your entire Sunday at an auction or swap meet. Similar stories go on and on.The point is, I have never been involved in something that has the same power to connect people. Project cars carry on memories forever, they will also reinforce your relationships, and teach you how to value hard work. Good photography can do the same thing. This Impala has the same sentiment a good photograph does. Every part has a story, a place, and a time. Every time I fire the engine there is more than just the sound. At some point in its life, this factory Ember Red 4-speed Impala SS had been wrecked badly enough to twist the frame beyond repair. The remains were stripped and it was left for dead. It was just a shell. When Derek saw it, he saw something more than most could.

He dragged it home and started building a new frame to roll under it. He has always had an affinity for lowered Chevys, which is why he started the chassis work with drop springs and spindles. He rebuilt the rear end with stock 3:36 gears. The rest of the frame was powder coated and equipped with all new bushings, ball joints, and a disc/drum brake setup. About the time he finished the chassis work, somehow, I talked him into selling me the project. He had no reason to sell it other than the kindness of his heart. A handshake later, he not only sold me the car but helped patch up the underbody before it went on the new frame. It was close to 2-months of cutting, grinding, and welding before it was ready to meet the frame again.

My vision for the car has always been simple. Get it on the road again, keep it old school, drivable, and reliable. It doesn’t need to be cool because of some particular wheel and tire combo, interior, or anything else. This car is cool because it’s survived and for now I want to keep the scars that came along with that. Every part of getting to drive the car came in small triumphs. The day the body met the frame, and the day I saw the bright newly painted sbc motor and transmission dropped in. New wiring, figuring out the driveline, brake and fuel plumbing, cooling system, etc. etc.

It has taken nearly 2-years of small triumphs… Until finally the day came when the Impala moved under its own power again. All of the exhausting nights, weekends, and mornings melt away as if it didn’t matter and you’re left with the reminder that you are a part of what made this moment possible.

1000 Mile Battery Vehicles

Many Routes to 1000 Mile Battery Vehicles, Reports IDTechEx 

It is easy to make 1000-mile battery-electric vehicles, and the effect on market uptake will be profound. For example, a typical city-dweller today might charge only once every two months and vacation where chargers are rare.

With solar bodywork having done some of the job, even feeble existing chargers will cause little delay in charging time. Indeed, solar bodywork is a “get-you-home” feature that is capable of suddenly making battery-electric vehicles acceptable in most of the world­– increasing their market potential and accelerating economies of scale in production, making battery-electric vehicles more affordable.  Meanwhile, today’s EV would be easier to sell to country dwellers if they had a folding solar panel “lifeboat” offered as an optional extra. Learn from the sea. Many solar boats can already be bought with effectively infinite range because they have so much area available for solar. Some have the generating capacity to supply three houses on arrival. For heavier sea-going ships, adding wind turbines works because at sea, the wind is rarely head-on at a speed less than the craft’s. The large Manta ocean clean-up boat from Sea Cleaners is the latest example. Even energy-independent ships are possible by combining these technologies with others.

Land vehicles lag in energy-independent technologies because they have less surface area per passenger, but the newly viable single-crystal silicon on the sides (as demonstrated by Sono Motors at CES 2021) is a step in the right direction. Student solar racers get energy independence using 3­­–5 compound solar that is unaffordable for most applications as yet. They also get ultra-low drag factors by squeezing the riders. Nonetheless, these things benchmark what is coming to a car, robot shuttle, and truck near you.

For example, following solar golf cars, Aptera, a Californian solar car start-up, promises 1000 miles for those willing to mix it with Class 8 trucks while sitting in a three-wheeled egg. More mainstream, Tesla and Lucid already get past 500 miles range by utilizing low drag factor, light-weighting, more efficient power electronics, and other strategies such as aluminum monocoque, even before adopting solar. Indeed, Tesla Roadster doubles the battery to get 620 miles. Lightyear solar family cars approach 500 miles range with exceptionally extensive solar bodywork, but also offer more efficient in-wheel motors. More efficient motors have been important for Tesla’s exceptional range, and better motors are on the way. When feasible, Elon Musk wants solar that unfolds on arrival and will pump more than one kilowatt. Many vehicles are largely glass, but solar building windows are obviously coming to vehicles, starting with Hyundai promising a translucent solar roof.

In 2018, Tesla began to adopt wide-bandgap semiconductors (silicon carbide) in the Model 3’s main inverter, which are more efficient and save on the weight and space of the cooling equipment. Supercapacitors are barely used in on-road BEVs, but they can improve range in many ways now they appear with higher energy density and at a lower price. They grab more braking energy, and they facilitate deep discharge of the newer batteries that can tolerate such things.

The roadmap of other range-extending technologies is equally rich. Infrared harvesting surfaces under the vehicle may work in hot countries. On top and sides, adding perovskite to silicon will grab infrared and light over a much wider spectrum, increasing electricity by at least 10% (multilayer perovskites promises 100%). Autonomous taxis, shuttles, and buses dispensing with the weight and space of the driver can go further. In windy countries, wind turbines that erect when the vehicle stops can be viable. Indeed, the US Department of Defense funds trials of electricity generation by using tethered drones from vehicles, up where the wind is stronger and more consistent.

Raghu Das, CEO of IDTechEx, advises, “VW Group and many others work on structural batteries and supercapacitors to increase range – no more dumb bodywork. Meanwhile, Tesla and Lucid commercialize a first step in that direction. Equally challenging, but still a possibility is using higher voltage to increase range beyond the current focus on charging time. 800-1000V is pioneered by VW Group, Lucid, Rivian, GM, Hyundai, Kia, and other carmakers and their suppliers such as Hitachi, Borg Warner and others. In principle, it increases efficiency and lightens weight.”

“We are currently working on the start of production for several premium 800-volt projects,” says Bert Hellwig, who is responsible for electric drive system development at ZF. “We supply a Chinese OEM with the complete electric driveline, including power electronics, for several models. For a European sports car manufacturer, ZF provides power electronics for a high-voltage application. Further series start-ups are already on the horizon.”

There is much more. Thermal management and all materials and systems can perform better and get lighter, both of which increase range. See the IDTechEx reports, “Materials for Electric Vehicles: Electric Motors, Battery Cells & Packs, HV Cabling 2020-2030” and “Thermal Management for Electric Vehicles 2020-2030”. For example, a transparent heater film applied only where needed on vehicle interiors has been shown to save up to 30% of that electricity.

Meeting all these factors in the middle is intermittent catenary and intermittent road rails and coils–charging vehicles as they hurtle by– and an increasing number of cars able to charge other cars (Sono Motors’ Sion is again an example). Batteries charge fast initially, so the profusion of lamp post chargers topping up in London, for example, can be a good alternative to scarce and expensive fast chargers, particularly as vehicles double their range. Battery improvements promise large range increases. Volkswagen targets 40% more energy density by 2030.  In other words, vehicle designers can now choose which of the many routes to 1000-mile range they will pursue with plenty of choices.

China’s EV Industry Growth

1.3M Electric Vehicles Were Sold In China In 2020 – Projected For 51% Increase By 2021

China has become a relatively rich market for Electric vehicles (EVs) in recent times, and companies like Tesla have pounced on the opportunity. China posted a record number of EVs sold in the country in 2020, despite the global downturn of the automotive industry due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to data presented by TradingPlatforms, 1.3M EVs were sold in China in 2020– a rise of 8% YoY, but is projected to grow by over 51% in 2021 to almost 2M.

EV Enters Mainstream– China One of Promising Markets, Despite Negative Effects of Pandemic

EVs have entered the automotive mainstream in recent times with Tesla setting the tone for affordable and stylish EVs. In 2019, the global EV market was valued at just over $162B and is expected to see tremendous growth in the next decade. The global EV market is projected to have a compound annual growth rate of 22.12% in the period from 2019-2026, and rise to a value of almost $803B in 2026.

China is a particularly strong market for EVs, where a record number of EVs were sold in 2020. However, recent policy changes around the EV industry in China, and the more recent Coronavirus pandemic, have slowed down the strong momentum EVs once generated. Despite this, the number of EVs sold in China still saw a modest increase of 8% YoY from 2019-2020 to a record 1.3M units sold.

Demand is also expected to rebound after 2020’s sharp downturn for the entire industry. EV sales are projected to increase by over 51% to almost 2M EVs sold. Automotive industry expert Chris Jones noted: “Prospects are very good for China’s EV market in 2021. There is already an excellent network of standardized public EV chargers in China, good government support and now a return to strong consumer demand.”

SAIC-GM-Wuling and Tesla Carried Chinese EV Industry Through Turbulent Time

Two brands and their vehicles carried the Chinese EV industry through a difficult period caused by the pandemic: SAIC-GM-Wuling and Tesla. The Tesla Model 3 was the most popular EV in China for a time until the Wuling Hong Guang Mini EV entered the market in the middle of 2020. As of July 2020, the Tesla Model 3 was the most registered new electric car in China with the Wuling Hong Guang Mini EV already following closely behind.

An estimated 11,000 Model 3’s had been registered by that period while 7,250 Wuling Hong Guang Mini EV had already been registered despite deliveries only starting in the same month. By the end of 2020, SAIC-GM-Wuling had become the most popular EV brand in China with an estimated 177,000 units in car sales compared to Tesla’s 137,460 units.

The two brands offer two very different EVs, yet found that their shared success that carried the Chinese EV market through a difficult time. Jones further notes: “If it had not been for the huge success of these two very different EVs, the Chinese EV market would have declined in 2020. Between them, the two models represented one in five of all EVs sold in China.”
