The Richest Under 30: Sam Bankman-Fried

29-year-old Sam Bankman-Fried has made his mark in the world of crypto, rising to prosperity in such a short period of time as comparable to that of Austin Russell’s Luminar. But how exactly did he do it?

Sam Bankman-Friend is the son of two Stanford Law School professors who graduated with a degree in physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2014. Following his graduation from university, Sam worked for Jane Street trading ETFs from 2014 to 2017.

He created his first liquid crypto market business in 2017, more commonly known as Alameda Research.

In an interview with Forbes, he discussed the purpose behind the company, stating, “We saw that crypto was exhibiting all the signs that there would be a lot of demand for liquidity but with very little liquidity available. Everyone on the street was talking about crypto during that time.

“We were seeing huge price movements and inflows which clearly pointed to a lot of people from many different countries trying to buy many different varieties of crypto currencies using different acquisition methods. Despite how big it had become, it still had only been a few months. This meant that there had not been enough time for most of the buyers globally to onboard into the crypto ecosystem.”

Then, in April of 2019, Sam co-founded FTX, the cryptocurrency essentially “built by traders, for traders.”

FTX is primarily used by consumers to trade spot, futures, stock, leverage tokens and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTS). The objective of FTX is “to develop a platform robust enough for professional trading firms and intuitive enough for first-time users.”

In 2021 alone, FTX brought in $900 million from companies like Coinbase Ventures and Softbank, attributable to an $18 billion estimate, following another $25 billion valuation in October.

This success amounts to how Sam was able to make the Forbes 30 Under 30 Hall of Fame, naming him the wealthiest person in the world under 30. His net worth as of February 5, 2022, sits at $24.5 billion.

Portions of this revenue has been flowed into marketing for the company, as the FTX serves as “the official cryptocurrency exchange of the MLB.” FTX was noticeably seen throughout the World Series in signs, commercials and even patches on the umpires’ uniforms.

The company, too, houses the Miami Heat as the play in the FTX Arena. The rise of Sam’s business has been exponential, so much that he is richest person to have obtained wealth so rapidly behind Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook.

What does the richest person under 30 plan to do with all this money?

Well, Sam prides himself on being a believer of “effective altruism,” a practice that involves making large amounts money to, in return, be donated back to boost one’s own influence.

One of his primary donations went towards the push for the removal of former US President Donald Trump from office. Sam donated a whopping $5.2 million to the Joe Biden campaign, which was the second greatest donation to the campaign following past New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

FTX Foundation contributes 1% of all net fees to active organizations around the world, while Sam himself has donated 0.1% of his own to issues surrounding voter registration, global poverty relief and artificial intelligence security.

The Vines – Wine Club for Billionaires

As the world continues to adapt to the pandemic, many people are looking for new travel memberships and elite experiences to indulge in–luckily the answer for these individuals is two simple words: The Vines. For background, in 2005, Michael Evans founded the luxury resort and private vineyard, The Vines of Mendoza, in Argentina. After many years of running the successful resort and having visitors from around the world, Michael decided to develop a sister project: a membership-only program with one goal, get people to know the world by making wine. Michael launched The Vines membership club in early 2020 and it has now evolved globally. The club has outposts and partners in seven regions around the world, including Champagne, Mendoza, Montalcino, Napa Valley, Priorat, The Mosel, and Willamette Valley, and they continue to expand beyond. 

In addition to traveling the world, members of The Vines are sent cases of wine throughout the year and are offered access to curated events centered around wine, food, culture and adventure. Over the course of the next five years, The Vines plans to offer winemaking in 12 different regions, as well as expand beyond winemaking, offering members a series of pop-ups like making Sake in Japan and Mezcal in Mexico.

Gucci Osteria Opens in Tokyo

Gucci announced the opening of the third Gucci Osteria da Massimo Bottura in Tokyo on 28th October 2021. Located on the top of the Gucci Namiki flagship store in Ginza, this will herald the contemporary Italian restaurant’s second global outpost outside of Italy, after Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, USA.  

Gucci Osteria da Massimo Bottura are contemporary restaurants with the same values and principles under one Gucci Osteria umbrella. Adding creativity, elegance, playfulness and sensuality to traditional Italian cuisine, guests in Tokyo will enjoy a unique dining experience that will also incorporate the diversity and identity of its location.

Seating 48 guests in the main dining room and 12 on the terrace, the new restaurant will serve lunch, dinner and Italian aperitivo. The kitchen will be led by head chef Antonio Iacoviello, bringing the youthful energy and philosophy of the original Gucci Osteria in Florence to Tokyo.

The menus have been developed by internationally acclaimed chef Massimo Bottura (owner of 3 Michelin Starred Osteria Francescana, voted The World’s Best Restaurant in 2016 and 2018), Karime Lopez, head chef of Gucci Osteria in Florence, Italy (awarded its first star in the Michelin Guide Italy 2020) and head chef Antonio Iacoviello. 

The à la carte menu will include Gucci Osteria signature dishes such as the legendary Emilia burger and Tortellini with Parmigiano Reggiano cream. There will also be creative takes on Italian-centred dishes and new seasonal Japanese-inspired creations. These will include Parmigiana Ramen and Milanese Wagyu.

Massimo explains, “Like Italy, Japanese food and produce are so intertwined in its culture that it has rightly become one of the greatest global cuisines. Japan holds a special place in my heart, and I’m excited to be able to welcome everyone to our little piece of Tokyo.”

A wide variety of drinks will also be available, including a wine list of over 350 bins and a cocktail offering. Guests will also be able to enjoy champagne and light snacks as a traditional Italian aperitivo from 4-6 pm daily, served on the restaurant’s rooftop terrace. 

The carefully curated interiors at Gucci Osteria Tokyo take inspiration from the original Florence outpost, with references to the Italian Renaissance and the eclectic mix of aesthetics embraced by Gucci. At the private lift entrance on the ground floor, a mysterious enfilade sets the tone for the upstairs. Gucci Décor’s Tian wallpaper enriches the trellis woodworks, resembling the dream-like atmosphere of winter gardens. Once inside, a vibrant green palette defines the spaces through each room, where rich peacock velvet banquettes complement the pea-green panelling, marble dining tables, wicker chairs and the Gucci Décor tableware.

Unique elements that distinguish the Gucci Osteria Tokyo include its wood flooring, hand-painted with a pattern inspired by antiques collected by Creative Director Alessandro Michele. The recurring symbolism of the star appears both in the ceiling lights of the hall leading to the main room as well as in the mosaic floor in the terrace, adorned with traditional Japanese plants. In addition, hidden behind patio doors, is an ornate private dining room named Room of Mirrors, which hosts up to 8 guests, where antique European mirrors, ebonized boiserie, and the Radura wallpaper from the Gucci Décor collection provide a truly intimate and exclusive dining experience. The exterior glass façade of the entrance facing Namiki-dori street is designed to allow a fluid perspective–offering a view of the linden trees on the roadside, the symbol of Namiki-dori Street.

Tech Industry Billionaires

70% of the Top 10 Billionaires Generated Their Wealth from the Tech Industry.

Data researched by Trading platforms UK indicates that 70% of the top ten richest people amassed their wealth from the technology industry as of March 1, 2021. The top ten wealthiest individuals control a fortune of $1.14 trillion in total, with tech players accounting for $855.9 billion.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is the wealthiest person globally with a fortune of $181 billion, followed by Tesla CEO Elon Musk at $174 billion. Microsoft founder Bill Gates ranks third with a fortune of $135 billion.

The report explains some of the underlying factors leading to the tech sector’s dominance of the top ten rich list. According to the research report:

“The dominance of the rich list by the technology industry figures also points to the sector’s resilience in times of crisis. Technology rose to prominence due to its ability to offer solutions to help people cope with the coronavirus crisis. For instance, during the health crisis, most billionaires in the sector like Amazon’s Jeff Bezos amassed more wealth as more people leveraged on e-Commerce platforms amid the lockdown and stay at home measures.”

The U.S. and China together host 49% of the top 500 billionaires globally.

Additionally, the findings reveal that the United States has the highest number of billionaires globally at 156, while China ranks second at 86. The two countries, therefore, account for 49% of the top 500 billionaires globally.

Germany is third with 28 billionaires followed by Russia at 24. Hong Kong and France follow, with each having 17 billionaires. The United Kingdom and India each have 16 billionaires. Canada is ninth with 15 billionaires while Sweden is tenth with 11 billionaires.

The analysis also shows that the tech industry has the highest number of billionaires globally at 84. Industrial ranks second with 56 billionaires followed by diversified at 50 while the consumer has 43 billionaires. Finance has 37 billionaires, while entertainment has the least billionaires at 10.

Jackson Hole Fine Art Fair

Jackson Hole Fine Art Fair (JHFAF) closed its first edition on Sunday, September 15, 2019, with strong sales and high attendance. Over the four-day event, JHFAF reports about 2,000 visitors with $2 million in sales. JHFAF brought out some of Jackson Hole’s most prominent locals, as well as new visitors, all excited to see the museum-quality fair presented within Jackson Hole’s thriving arts community.

The fair presented 50 exhibitors who brought works that they felt matched the personal aesthetics of the Jackson Hole community. Works ranged in genre and price from world-renowned artists like Maynard Dixon, Ed Mell, Billy Schenck, Eanger Irving Couse, Thomas Hart Benton, Andy Warhol, Alexander Calder, Ed Ruscha and Sam Francis. 

Fair Director Rick Friedman said, “Because JHFAF was the first international fine art fair in town, I think both collectors and exhibitors did not know what to expect. I’m so happy to report that all attendees I spoke to said it was far beyond their expectations. We heard the repeated comments, ‘loved it, fantastic, and terrific’ by fairgoers as they left the fair. We produced a multi-genre fair, with works within the Contemporary, Modern, Native American and Wildlife genres, with many of the early to mid 20th century pieces finding new homes. I see this as a breakthrough event that presented world-class and museum quality offerings across all of our showcased genres and I think the sales prove that. It was the wealthiest collectors as a percentage of the attendance of any of my fairs ever, over 10 years. ” 

Exhibitors reported strong sales with  Redfern Gallery, Nieto Fine Art, Mark Sublette Medicine Man Gallery, Montana Trails and Mongerson Gallery reporting mostly sold out booths. 

Throughout the weekend, guests were treated to special programs and events including artist Q&A’s with Barbara Van Cleve, Donald Martiny, Larry Pirnie and Sarah Winkler. During the fair, JHFAF also produced a silent auction, which raised money for its institutional partner, The National Museum of Wildlife Art. 

JHFAF presented several awards throughout the weekend including the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award to the late John Nieto and the 2019 Art Collectors of the Year Award to Anne Phillip, the 2019 Sculptor of the Year award to Bart Walter and the Contemporary Artist of the Year award to Paul Villinski. Quotes from Galleries:

Local dealer, Miriam Diehl of Diehl Gallery said, “It’s been incredibly exciting to see an art fair of this caliber in Jackson Hole. It’s been wonderful to have so many like-minded dealers and the camaraderie among them has been amazing and encouraging. It’s been tremendously successful for us and we look forward to the second edition.”

John Nieto Gallery who was awarded the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award for the late John Nieto said, “The visitors have been very quality. They know the work and the artist’s history. We’ve even had a lot of collectors who own Nieto’s work come by. There have been many great conversations about art.” 

Rey Redfern of Redfern Gallery said, “The show has been much more than I expected. I’ve met a lot of people and I’ve sold a lot of paintings. They’ve been paintings I’ve had tucked away for a long time, but they’re high quality and that’s why they sold.” 

Brenda Linscott from Endeavor Fine Art said, “We had a chance to bond with our space and develop a sampling of five of our artists who we’ve worked with for many years. It’s been so nice for us to see our artists in a visual conversation with other artists at the fair. To walk through the show and see what everyone else brought has been really incredible too. There really is room for everyone.” 

Thomas Paul of Thomas Paul Fine Art said, “JHFAF did a great job putting this  fair together with such an excellent variety of artists on display. It was so nice to see such a powerful exhibition of contemporary art  brought to Jackson Hole.”

As of late, Rolls-Royce invited a slew of journalists and digital influencers from around the globe to test out their newly introduced SUV. Jackson Hole, Wyoming is notably recognized for it’s elite residents and celebrity visitors alike, including Kanye West, Sandra Bullock and Harrison Ford. Yet, this time around the Snow King Resort and one of its steepest slopes had become acquainted with the Cullinan. Not the largest rough diamond found in South Africa in 1905 but the manufacturer’s first-ever sport utility vehicle. Yes, we couldn’t conceive that a Rolls could ever climb a mountain but seeing is believing.

As we ascended to the top with the 6000 lb gem, she started to metamorphose from a stately Caterpillar into bodacious butterfly. We went over unpaved trails and ruts all the way to the summit (8010 ft above sea level) for pastries and coffee. On the way down with merely a switch of a button we descended with ease over gravel and dirt all while being enamored by the Spirit of Ecstacy with her wings throwing caution to the wind.

On the road, we felt every bit of 563 hp (627 lb-ft torque @ 1600 rpm) as we swiveled through the two-lane main road with minimal traffic. Just as graceful as her siblings and as celebrated as the Phantom we witnessed tons of townies gawk at her effortless design and styling. Her grill kept in line with the overall DNA of the brand but its standard 22″ part polished shadow wheels matched her midnight sapphire exterior nicely.

Our deep scarlet red leather interior was enunciated with the usual technology and innovation of their BMW iDrive-inspired infotainment system as seen in the Ghost; however, in the back we had separate seats and access to tablet-like screens which erupted by the touch of a button. Along the back top panels were buttons to dial up or down the 22-speaker bespoke sound system which mimicked an IMAX theater. We bopped around the back in comfort and chit chatted with no outside noise due to their 200 lbs of sound-deadening insulation and privacy glass which lurks behind your head.

Like most automobiles in this segment, her dual-pane sunroof opened up wide enough for you to want to hop up and cleave your head out while screaming all the way to prom. Our model didn’t feature the tailgate retractable seats; but nonetheless this vehicle will most likely end up at some stadium for playoffs with a chilled champagne bottle and scotch in the back middle console with custom etched snifters.

This vehicle’s MSRP is $325,000 but our model tested was approximately $400,000. Is the price worth it? Hell yes! After all, this is the first in its family, which can conform to most terrains and excursions. Go figure, the youngest in its batting order can be used to pick the kids up from school, off-road and be chauffeured to Rihanna’s Annual Diamond Ball. It’s highly probable you may see this truck at a Costco’s as well as Jay-Z and Beyonce’s next On The Run tour. Having said that, this is most decidedly one of Rolls-Royce’s more practical vehicles as it will and can be used on an everyday basis. With its dynamic all-terrain capabilities, safety features and height, you’ll have more command of the road that any of its tribe members.

The salaries of Hollywood A-listers has long been a source of gossip and debate among film fans. But are they actually worth it? While some say not, the film studios are actually getting a pretty good return for the cash investment.

And now RouletteOnline have produced a useful infographic that puts everything into perspective when it comes to your favourite top earners.

According to Roulette Online, the key is how many dollars a film studio gets back for each one they spend on an actor or actress. While personal net worth can run into the hundreds of millions for some stars, the money many of our top bards earn the studios can be measured in the hundreds of billions.

• Near the foot of the list is Charlize Theron who has a personal net worth of about $130 million. While she’s laughing all the way to the bank, the return for the studios is only $1.19 for every dollar invested. You might think this low, but you have to put it into perspective – there’s still a healthy profit to be made with the actress helping to bring in some $1.5 billion during her career.

• You’d but right in thinking that ageing action king Tom Cruise would fare better but he’s still only bringing in $4.57 per studio dollar. His top grossing film was War of the Worlds and over 38 outings, the actor has managed to bring in well over $3.5 billion for the studios.

• Cruise might be a little miffed that he’s beaten on the list by both Adam Sandler, who earns the studio $7.25 per dollar, and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson who comes in at $8.48.

• Perennial everyman, Mark Wahlberg, with 39 films under his belt across various genres including comedy and action, breaks the double figure barrier and comes in at just over $12 per dollar spent. You won’t be surprised to learn that his top grossing film was Transformers: Age of Extinction even if Last Knight was a bit of a setback.

• The girls are quietly accumulating for the film studios with Jennifer Anniston, Melissa McCarthy and Julia Roberts all delivering excellent returns. Top female actor on the list is Cate Blanchett who pulls in a very healthy $66 per dollar spent for the studio and lies in second place.

• There’s something of a battle going on between the superheroes, as you might expect. Chris Hemsworth is the worst performing but still brings in a healthy $32.25, while Robert Downey Jr, who has a net worth of $260 million, mostly from donning the Iron Man suit, delivers a return of $47.10.

• Top of the list, however, is the acting royalty that is Samuel L Jackson. He earns the studios a staggering $83.79 for every dollar invested. The star of Pulp Fiction and the Avengers films has had 73 outings in his career, is worth over $200m, and has earned those film execs a massive $5 billion or more.

ROLLS-ROYCE GHOST BLACK BADGE

A few years ago, Rolls-Royce began noticing that they were in somewhat of a pickle. They’ve unarguably been building the ‘ultimate luxury car’ and have been the leader in that category for over 100+ years; but as of late, the company learned the thing that they do best – isn’t exactly what people want anymore.

The fresh wave of Rolls-Royce consumers are emerging ‘fast money’ elite within a global society whom demand more than just luxury from a brand that purely builds luxury cars. Not coincidentally, Rolls-Royce found a way to keep us in the dark about this, and in doing so created the ‘Black Badge’ edition to answer our cries. 

The Ghost Black Badge in the short-wheel base platform is much more athletic and dare we say ‘naughtier’ than in standard configuration. On the exterior, nearly all of the traditional chrome has been blackened including the retractable spirit of ecstasy, window trim, wheels and grille. Although It might appear subtle to the common eye, it has a lot to say to the purist, so for the manufacturer this is a win-win. 

The engineering team realized what their job was – keep the class, create the hustle and make it fearless. From the ground up, the frame has been recalibrated to make the Ghost feel like you’re floating on a cloud while cruising down Sunset Boulevard to driving on rails while sprinting across Mulholland Drive. Multi-layered carbon alloy composite 21-inch wheels were designed around the idea of exotic italian super cars from the 70’s era and the tires have low-rolling resistance characteristics. The brakes alone are an outstanding feature on this series and come well-outfitted with energy regeneration, dynamic/cornering control and a host of additional features.

For millennial investors, the Ghost Black Badge also receives an extra 50 or so horsepower pushing output to over 600hp. On the inside, performance and luxury is infused using technical weave on the dashboard; lambswool floor mats; a starlight headliner, which can blink you into a dream and a bespoke premium audio system pumping out 600 watts of youthfulness.

Our Ghost Black Badge arrived in piano black over an extremely irresistable cobalt blue interior with contrasting arctic white stitching which appeared better than the pinstripes on a Zegna suit. The individual seat configuration alongside a cutting-edge infotainment system, housing a 20.5GB hard drive disc for storing music files plus night vision. 

The Ghost Black Badge will set you back a mere $416,605 USD, but considering that a Lamborghini will cost more and you can’t bring your friends along for the ride or even hang out in the back seat – it’s nothing short of astonishing. And to imagine, this is the first time we’ve witnessed Rolls-Royce show us their other hand!
