Rolls-Royce Reveals New Ghost

By Cassandra Yany

Rolls-Royce revealed the design for its New Ghost on Tuesday. CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös described the Ghost as “the most technologically advanced Rolls-Royce yet.” The first Goodwood Ghost, released in 2009, was the company’s most successful product in its 116-year history.

The automobile company released the launch film in which Müller-Ötvös shares the importance of refinement and simplicity in producing the new Ghost. The six-minute video showcases the appearance of the car, highlighting the small, unique details. Müller-Ötvös said that a client-first approach played a huge role in the car’s conception.

A team of specialists, engineers and craftspeople used research of Ghost clients’ interests, opinions and taste patterns to develop a new model that meets the preferences of these drivers. The style of the Ghost was created using the ‘Post Opulence’ philosophy, which designer Henry Cloke says is “about simplicity. [It’s] about something that doesn’t shout at you, but it whispers.”

The new Ghost has been termed “future-focused with a minimal aesthetic.” Engineers worked to combine dynamic highlights from the portfolio of numerous types of cars into one vehicle. It was formulated to remove as much energy transfer as possible from the road into the body of the car to create a smooth ride. The car was built with sound absorbing materials to reduce the level of noise inside the car. A soft undertone was created for the driver and passengers to hear a single, subtle note while on the road. Media screens fold out from behind the driver’s and passenger’s seats, providing entertainment for those sitting in the back seats.

Behind the grill of the car are lights that provide a subtle glow below the Rolls-Royce logo, between the “laser” headlights. The interior contains wood accents, and was intended to promote a relaxing and serene driving experience. The dashboard features hundreds of illuminated stars surrounding the Ghost nameplate, and the headliner is adorned with star-like lights.

The new Ghost has all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering, and was constructed to drive easy, regardless of road conditions. It was built on Rolls-Royce aluminum spaceframe architecture, which was adapted to make way for advances in this model. The Planar system increases agility through three elements:

  • The Wishbone Damper unit above the front suspension assembly creates a secure and effortless ride.
  • The Flagbearer system uses cameras to read the road and prepare the suspension system for any upcoming changes in the road surface.
  • Last, the Satellite Aided Transmission uses GPS data to pre-select the optimum gear for approaching corners.

The new Ghost is equipped with a 6.75-litre, twin-turbo V12 engine. The doors open and close electrically for an easy entrance and exit. Engineering Lead, Jonathan Simms, said the team “pushed [their] architecture even further and created a car even more dynamic, even more luxurious and, most of all, even more effortlessly usable.”

Additionally, Rolls-Royce released a podcast series explaining the aesthetic and engineering of the new Ghost. The sleek, luxury car is expected to retail around $322,500, with the first deliveries anticipated for early next year.

New RR Ghost

In autumn this year, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars will make an historic announcement in launching new Ghost. This product follows the first Goodwood Ghost, which became the most successful motor car in the marque’s 116-year history.

· First of four animated films offering insight into the substance underpinning new Ghost goes live

· Post Opulence identified as emerging design movement defined by reduction and substance

· Podcast series exploring design and engineering philosophy of new Ghost available now

More than six years ago, a team of luxury intelligence specialists, designers, engineers and craftspeople assembled to begin development of the new Rolls-Royce Ghost. Like the first Goodwood Ghost, launched in 2009, this collective would work obsessively to ensure that New Ghost would hold its own place in the Rolls-Royce portfolio and represent a unique set of client values.

Since the introduction of Ghost, which became the most successful Rolls-Royce in history, the marque’s unique proximity its clients afforded the team access to a large body of information. It revealed the divergent interests, opinions and changing taste patterns within Ghost clients’ appreciation of luxury. This primary research allowed them to create a product myopically focussed on the requirements of these remarkable men and women. These insights were what informed the designers, engineers and craftspeople at Rolls-Royce as they moved into the development phase of the highly progressive new Ghost.

As with all primary research conducted by the marque’s specialists, these experts were also asked to present their findings. In this short film, Rolls-Royce shares some of these insights to demonstrate the underlying substance of the highly progressive new Ghost ahead of its official unveiling in autumn this year.

The series begins with Rolls-Royce Designer Henry Cloke, who identified an emerging aesthetic defined by purity and minimalism, internally codenamed Post Opulence. Cloke says, “We found that Ghost clients sought objects that are effortlessly, almost instinctively exceptional. They rejected busy details and flash gimmicks, instead seeking extremely high quality, thoughtfully designed pieces that stand up to the most intense scrutiny. This philosophy defined new Ghost’s minimalist design treatment.”

The marque elected to use the increasingly popular medium of animated illustrations to convey these insights. Renowned illustrator, Charlie Davis, was chosen to cohesively and beautifully represent these findings in a fashion that befits the highly progressive new Ghost.

In addition to these insights presented in animation form, a series of five podcasts have been launched that reveal the marque’s findings, as well as insights into the underlying material and engineering substance of new Ghost in long form. Hosted by Johanna Agerman Ross, Curator of Twentieth Century and Contemporary Furniture and Product Design at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the podcasts are available on AppleGoogleSpotify and Deezer.

TAKE A VIRTUAL ROAD TRIP

By Armon Hayes × Vaughn Lowery

A virtual road trip is a prompt, safe and innovative way to entertain yourself as well as a family when social distancing is the new way of life. With more time spent at home, surveying ways to decompress when working from home and cabin fever sets can be overwhelming. Prowling the web compels imagination and spirit, here are suggestions to consider during your virtual trip.

Do include online gaming that tests your luck, for starters online poker at Coyote Bob’s casino will stimulate your mind maintaining engagement. Interactive and strategic hence no time for tedium. Gaming is essential to any trip, despite your game of choice, or age online gaming is growing progressively. Approachable to the fingertips with exciting new ways to include friends or foreigners alike on the web.

Interactive games like Poker and Spades allow you to invite a partner, or take your chances with a virtual opponent. Whether arcade or trivial include socializing part of your routine permitting distance and normalcy from the harsh realities of a worldwide epidemic.

Choose this time to discover new places now when travel is risky and shunned upon. Discover new destinations to check off your bucket list while learning about the universe around you.

360 Magazine shares music playlists and extensive cooking options in detail of a virtual experience. Take a trip to visit the Music City aka Nashville with an online experience which will virtually connect you with such a beloved city. Simply head over to their CVB’s official site and conduct virtual tours of the Omni Hotel, City Winery and the Country Music Hall of Fame.

During your virtual trip, I recommend introducing yourself to emerging social apps. Finding fresh new fun ways to keep in touch sharing your experience virtually or try meditation with friends and love-ones. Emerging social apps keeping it simple and self explanatory like Houseparty and Google Hangouts are virtual room simulators where a happy hour won’t subject you to a deadly virus.

The latest on-camera/voice messenger app is Zoom. Originally made for business and conference calls, is now being heavily used during this period of shelter in place. As of late, two of our team members lost their grandparents. Regrettably the two of them weren’t able to attend the funerals due to the coronavirus lockdown. Thanks to this dedicated video conferencing app, both of them were able to virtually attend while still practicing physical distancing. Other useful ways to utilize this platform includes, but not restricted to, the following virtual experiences: wine tasting, college reunions, organizational gatherings and music listening parties (gives the viewers an opportunity to directly speak to the recording artist while listening to their new EP).

Thus, virtually invite a few friends to meditate, engage in a yoga session as well as share your quarantine experiences and best practices. Even if social media apps aren’t your ideal form of communication, you’ll value the innovative virtual experience. Get in touch with yourself while productively passing time.

Toyota Avalon TRD

By Abigail Baldwin × Vaughn Lowery

Los Angeles traffic is a sea of homogeneity and it’s hard for your car to stand out amongst the sprawl of uninspired sedans and low-performance hatchbacks. The 2020 Toyota Avalon TRD is the perfect, unique commuter car that’s practical while also making a standout statement. The sleek, high-performance vehicle is perfect for a youthful executive with a small family in tow. It’s red accents, curved tail lights, and high-speed performance variants set it apart from the dull monotony of the commuter car market.

Design

The design of the 2020 Toyota Avalon TRD is sleek and vigorous. It’s low to the ground, and 1.8 inches longer than a Toyota Camry, giving it a sporty look. Driving the Avalon TRD makes a visual statement with a massive grill. The taillights are elegant and concave, above TRD exhaust tips, and the side-skirts feature a unique red pin-striping detail.

Toyota has continued its uses of the push-button start and keyless entry features with the Avalon TRD. The car also features a remote start by holding down on the unlock button on the key, allowing you to start your car from inside the house on a cold day. The key also includes a trunk button that gracefully opens the exceptionally spacious trunk.

The interior of the Avalon TRD is airy and luxe. The black leather features red contrast stitching to match the vibrant red seat belts, red piping accents on the seats, and the exterior pinstripe. No one has to fight for shotgun because the back seats have ample legroom, two charging stations, and a convenient center armrest that has a drop-down cup holder for everyone’s Starbucks…

The attention to detail includes the front seat door panel, which is padded leather with classic window and mirror controls. The red piping and cloth inserts make the heated front seats sporty and comfortable. The red contrast stitching is incorporated throughout the interior of the vehicle, including the steering wheel. The dashboard and gages have a simple, uncluttered look. The center console matches the sporty aspect of the car and doesn’t skimp on handy features: four USB charging stations, a Qi-compatible wireless charging station, two cup holders, and a button parking brake below the shift. A large sunroof set into the dark leather ceiling completes the luxurious interior.

Technology

The state-of-the-art technology enhances the commodious interior of the Avalon TRD. The Avalon TRD features cruise control on the steering wheel and a back-up camera with multiple angle options. The media center is a touch screen and provides voice activation Bluetooth for handsfree calling and music control. The voice control button is placed on the steering wheel for easy access. The Audio Plus system includes eight speakers for surrounding sound. The media center has an audio jack and a USB 2.0 port. The car is Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa compatible, as well as Scout®, GPS Link, Siri®, and HD Radio™ compatible. This model also offers an HD radio with a SiriusXM® 3-month All Access trial.

Performance and Safety

What’s most unique about the 2020 Avalon TRD is that it’s a commuter sedan with multiple performance variants. The car includes eco, normal, and sport modes. The Avalon TRD has an incredibly luxurious and sporty feel. It is an 8-speed automatic with the option of manual gear shift, using steering wheel tabs or the traditional stick shift.

The car has an almost silent start and minimal road noise. It has a responsive, natural feeling throttle and fast acceleration. The 2020 Avalon has two-piston brake calipers. The breaks are smooth with a gradual bite and require that you push halfway down to get a more dramatic break. The 2020 TRD has a lower center of gravity and stiffer springs than the previous Avalon model. It features 19-inch rims, lighter than the standard, s, and the car has updated, track-tuned suspension. Also, the special suspension accompanies a 15.8 gal fuel tank capacity, a 3.5 L V6 engine, and a horsepower of 301 hp. With a curb weight of 3,638 lbs and an MPG of 22 city/31 highway, the Avalon’s features are space and resource-efficient. The steering is a bit heavier than the previous Avalon but still exceptionally light, allowing for flat turns with a great grip.

The Avalon TRD has great visibility, with additional trunk windows on either side. The car’s protective system offers fast response times and enhanced vehicle stability control for a safe drive you can trust. It includes ten airbags: driver and front passenger Advanced Airbag System, driver and front passenger seat-mounted side airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, rear seat-mounted side airbags, and front and rear side curtain airbags. Additionally, the 2020 Avalon has front and rear energy-absorbing crumple zones, a blind-spot monitor, and rear cross-traffic alert.

Overall, the 2020 Avalon TRD is a unique, luxury vehicle with safety and security you can feel, and style you can see.

Pricing

The 2020 Avalon TRD goes for $45,000 before market adjustment, making it a competitor for Audi and BMW models. The suggested retail price or MSRP starts at $42,375. The TRD, however, is larger than the competition, with a more spacious and luxurious interior, and its own sleek, red-accented look. Additionally, the TRD comes with a memorized steering wheel position and a higher fuel economy when compared to the 2020 Nissan Maxima.

The Most Exciting Cars of 2020

by Ronald DiMaggio and Christina Perry, TRED

2019 proved to be an exciting year for car enthusiasts: we saw a revival of the iconic Toyota Supra, a redesigned Porsche 911 and BMW 3 Series, and a brand new McLaren hypercar in the Senna. Those were all properly exciting, but with the new year well underway, I think it’s only appropriate to start looking forward [insert cheesy 2020 vision joke], so in this article we’ll be taking a look at some of the more important cars set to come out in 2020. This list is not exhaustive, though it includes all the cars that we expect to make a big splash in the industry.

2021 BMW M3

BMW is set to reveal its all new M3 sedan, based on the existing G20 3 series later this year (with sales starting early 2021.) Spy photos and renderings (like the one above) have fans of the brand on the edge of their seats. This is mostly because spy photos have indicated that the 2021 M3 may follow in the 7 series’ footsteps with an absolutely massive grille that extends from the hood all the way down to the front lip. Yikes. Less worrying, however, is what will be hiding behind that grille, a stronger and doubly turbocharged version of the existing B58 inline six, dubbed the S58. The new M3 will also be the first one ever to offer all-wheel drive. We can be sure that it will drive well, as all M3s do, but here’s hoping it looks okay…

2021 Ford Bronco

Ford is set to debut its new Bronco in spring of this year, and intel so far is pointing toward it being exactly what we expect out of a vehicle wearing a Bronco badge: a boxy, rugged, body-on-frame SUV. As we saw with the recent Supra unveil, bringing back an icon after decades of dormancy is a risky proposition, but it appears that Ford is doing it right.

2021 Ford Mustang Mach E

Another exciting vehicle from Dearborn is the new Mustang Mach E crossover. Slated for delivery in late 2020, the Mustang Mach E is Ford’s first full-fledged foray into the all-electric segment. It looks good, it will be quick, and it seems to be at least somewhat reasonably priced, though I do have one small gripe with the Mustang Mach E. Did they have to call it a Mustang? I’m not one to get hung up on the mostly arbitrary sanctity of model names, but this is a bit ridiculous. Aside from styling cues, this vehicle has absolutely nothing in common with the traditional Mustang, and I think it’s something of an affront to the Mustang heritage.

2020 Tesla Model Y

Tesla is planning to start deliveries of their new crossover, the Model Y, in the summer of this year. The Model Y, as all Teslas are, will be an important car because it will assuredly disrupt sales of its gas-powered competitors in a big way. Tesla’s entrance into a more reasonable price bracket with the Model 3 made quite a splash in the sedan segment, and we can expect the Model Y to do the same in the increasingly hot crossover market.

2021 Tesla Roadster

Another Tesla sure to shake things up, though at a much bigger cost, is the upcoming Roadster. Set to go on sale after the Model Y, the Roadster is a $200,000+ supercar with quite a few big claims to support. Tesla has claimed that the Roadster will do 0-60mph in under two seconds, and will be able to reach speeds in excess of 250mph with seating for four. If it’s as potent as Tesla says it will be, I’m sure Lamborghini, Ferrari and McLaren will be sweating once it hits the streets; though I’m sure those brands have at least a small fanbase unwilling to switch to a supercar that doesn’t make any noise.

2020 Chevrolet Corvette

We already know quite a bit about the new C8 Corvette, but since it hasn’t technically hit the streets yet, it still belongs on this list. The C8 is Chevrolet’s first mid-engined Corvette and it marks the biggest transformation of the iconic sports car since its inception in the 1950s. It is still very much a Corvette though, with pushrod V8 power, two seats, and two doors. Dealers are preparing to make deliveries as early as next month, and I can’t wait to see them on the road.

2021 Mercedes Benz S-Class

Representing for the luxury sedan category on our list is the all new 2021 Mercedes Benz S-Class, set to be available for purchase later this year. The S-Class is a staple of the Mercedes brand, but more importantly, it’s a technological leader in the industry. Mercedes tends to debut lots of new tech in their flagship sedan, and other manufacturers often follow suit. With this in mind, the new S-Class is sure to bring with it many new innovations, and induce lots of innovative ripples throughout the industry.

2021 Land Rover Defender

Arguably the quintessential British 4×4, the Defender has been absent from the US since 1997, because its lack of airbags (and Land Rover’s refusal to engineer their addition) failed to comply with US safety standards. The used market for the Defenders that had already made it stateside has been hot since then, and there was no hint of any new iterations of that classic Landy recently.

And now, the Defender’s return is imminent. It has a lot of modern updates, but it still retains a fair amount of the rugged, utilitarian styling that gave the original its charm.

2020 Lotus Evija

In the awesome but unobtanium category (for most of us), Lotus is bringing out one of the sexiest, most exciting hypercars we’ve seen in a long time. And… it’s electric. In fact, exciting is sort of an understatement. It’s the most powerful electric car ever, with nearly 2,000 horsepower and a top speed of over 200 miles per hour. Oh, and it charges insanely fast, too—18 minutes to charge 100% (to a very respectable 250-mile range.)

Even the name is pretty exceptional; it’s probably partially a clever riff on the electric vehicle acronym of “EV,” and it also (loosely) means “living” or “breathing” in Hebrew.

2021 Cadillac Escalade

Because the ‘Sclade is the perennial choice of A-list Hollywood celebs, reality show stars, and ballers everywhere, it has to stay on top of its style game. The 2021 iteration fittingly made its TV debut in commercials alongside Academy Award-winning actress Regina King during the 2020 Oscars.

It’s big (even bigger than before), and bold, adding 7.1 inches in length over the previous model, and a massive grill. Inside, there’s more space, and some serious tech updates to everything from the suspension and transmission to the giant, curved  OLED screen that probably has better image quality than the TV on your wall at home. A diesel engine will also be an option for the first time.

*Featured image of Oscar®-winning actress and acclaimed director Regina King behind the scenes with the 2021 Cadillac Escalade.

·         Sales reflect growth of 25% on 2018’s previous record of 4,107

·         Significant sales growth in all regions worldwide

·         Cullinan, the brand’s new SUV, makes major contribution to sales growth

·         Black Badge continues to enjoy strong demand, particularly amongst younger clients

·         Strong demand for Phantom, Wraith, Dawn and Ghost (in its final year of production)

·         Spectacular Bespoke commissions and Collection Cars reaffirm Rolls-Royce’s status as the world’s foremost manufacturer of luxury products

·         Significant new investment in manufacturing plant at the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood

·         50 new jobs created to meet expanded global demand

·         Record number of Apprenticeship Programme recruits in 2019

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has delivered an historic annual sales record in 2019, with a global performance unequalled in the company’s 116-year history. A total of 5,152 cars were delivered to customers in over 50 countries around the world, an increase of 25% on the previous high set in 2018. With these historic results, Rolls-Royce continues to make a meaningful contribution to the overall performance of its shareholder, BMW Group.

Commenting on the results, Torsten Müller-Ötvös, CEO, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, said: “This performance is of an altogether different magnitude to any previous year’s sales success. While we celebrate these remarkable results, we are conscious of our key promise to our customers, to keep our brand rare and exclusive. We are pleased and proud to have delivered growth of 25% in 2019. Worldwide demand last year for our Cullinan SUV has driven this success and is expected to stabilize in 2020. It is a ringing testament to the quality and integrity of our products, the faith and passion of our customers and, above all, the skill, dedication and determination of our exceptional team at the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood and around the world and our dedicated global dealer network.”

Worldwide Sales Growth

Sales grew across all regions during the year, driven by strong customer demand for all Rolls‑Royce models. The company reported significant sales growth in every one of its key global markets. North America retained top status (around a third of global sales) followed by China and Europe (including UK). Individual countries that achieved record sales results included Russia, Singapore, Australia, Qatar and Japan. In 2019, Rolls-Royce motor cars were sold in more than 50 countries worldwide through a global network of 135 dealerships. As part of its commitment to long-term sustainable growth, Rolls‑Royce announced two new dealerships during 2019 – Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Brisbane and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Shanghai Pudong. Development of the new Rolls-Royce Motor Cars flagship dealership in Berkeley Street, London – more than twice the size of the previous location – is underway and is due for launch in 2020.

Strong Demand for All Models

Phantom retains its rightful place as the company’s pinnacle product, with Dawn and Wraith continuing to dominate their respective sectors; strong demand was experienced for all three models during the year. Cullinan, the marque’s new SUV, successfully translated the media plaudits and public acclaim into the largest advance order book and fastest post‑launch sales growth of any Rolls-Royce model in history. In November 2019, the marque completed its dark, edgy Black Badge family with the addition of Cullinan Black Badge alongside Ghost, Dawn and Wraith variants, all of which were highly sought-after by customers seeking a more individual, rebellious expression of the Rolls‑Royce brand.

Cullinan: ‘Effortless Everywhere’ delivering on its promise

In its first full year of availability, Cullinan exceeded even the highest expectations raised by its successful launch. The world’s pre-eminent super-luxury SUV has become the fastest-selling new Rolls-Royce model in history. The fervor throughout the year around the arrival of Cullinan was matched only by the media and public sensation occasioned by the launch of Cullinan Black Badge, ‘The King of the Night’, in November. This completed the Black Badge family of unapologetic, dynamic products created for an emerging generation of super-luxury consumer; people who refuse to be defined by traditional codes of luxury, follow their own path and make their own rules.

Farewell to Ghost – But Not for Long!

2019 marked the end of Ghost production after 11 years of uninterrupted commercial and critical success. Since its launch at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2009, Ghost has established itself as an undisputed modern classic. The most popular Rolls-Royce model of the Goodwood era, Ghost attracted a new audience of younger, often self-made, entrepreneurial customers to the Rolls-Royce brand. An extended wheelbase version was introduced in 2011 and an updated Ghost Series II was unveiled in Geneva in 2014. The last Ghost of the current generation left the Goodwood production line at the end of 2019. Ghost has been a highly successful and vitally important car for Rolls-Royce. Over its 11-year lifecycle – a truly remarkable record for any motor car – it became the biggest-selling Rolls-Royce not just of the Goodwood era, but in the entire history of the marque. The commercial success of Ghost placed Rolls-Royce in a position to scale up its production and make the massive investments that have led to it becoming the truly global brand it is today.

Ghost’s successor is due for launch in mid-2020 after five years in development. With market availability from the fourth quarter, the successor will elevate the Ghost name, and the company itself, to new heights of excellence and ambition in design, engineering, materials and driving dynamics.

Bespoke: The Jewel in the Crown of Rolls-Royce

Global demand for Rolls-Royce Bespoke reached a new peak in 2019. The Bespoke Collective at The Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, West Sussex, comprises several hundred creative designers, engineers and craftspeople. These highly talented men and women take enormous pride in fulfilling unprecedented levels of customer requests for Bespoke personalisation and delivering on beautiful individual commissions such as the Rose Phantom. Undisputed global leaders in their pursuit of perfection, the Bespoke Collective captured the imagination of customers, enthusiasts, media and fans alike in 2019 with some of the most spectacular Collection Cars ever created in the history of the brand. Bespoke IS Rolls-Royce! Among the year’s Bespoke highlights was the Zenith Collector’s Edition of Rolls-Royce Ghost. Limited to just 50 examples, this masterpiece was created to mark the end of Ghost’s remarkable 11-year reign.

Wraith Eagle VIII celebrated the centenary of Alcock and Brown’s first non-stop transatlantic flight (powered by twin Rolls-Royce Eagle engines). Tranquillity Phantom, inspired by space exploration, features a unique Gallery inspired by the X-Ray coded aperture masks used on the British Skylark space rocket and, for the first time in a Rolls-Royce, incorporates meteorite as an aesthetic embellishment. New accessories added to the existing, much celebrated Bespoke offering included the exceptional Rolls-Royce Champagne Chest.

An Expanding Family

At more than 2,000 strong, with 50 nationalities represented, the workforce at the Home of Rolls-Royce is now at its largest since the opening of Rolls-Royce’s Global Centre for Luxury Manufacturing Excellence, in 2003. During 2020, 50 new jobs were created to meet expanded global demand.

This year’s intake of 26 new entrants on the company’s highly successful Apprenticeship Program included the first-ever Sir Ralph Robins Degree Apprenticeship candidates. Named after the ex-CEO of Rolls‑Royce plc, Sir Ralph has served as a non-executive Director of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars since its inception in 2003.

Since the launch of the Apprenticeship Program in 2006, almost 200 participants have completed a combination of hands-on practical training alongside skilled Associates and vocational training at local colleges. A number of these remarkable young men and women have gone on to hold important technical and supervisory roles within the company.

Confidence in the future

The year saw significant new investment in the manufacturing plant at the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood, reaffirming both the company’s commitment to its UK operations and its buoyant outlook for the years ahead. Projects included further refinements to the already world-class manufacturing facilities, equipment and processes, to maximize efficiency and ensure the highest levels of quality as demanded by Rolls-Royce customers. A new two-story development, due for completion in the first quarter of 2020, will add more than 1,000 square meters to the ground floor Assembly Hall, and create additional first-floor office space. In closing, Mr. Müller-Ötvös said, “There is no other company like Rolls-Royce Motor Cars: we are all conscious of what a privilege it is to design, build and deliver the best car in the world for our customers.  PersonalIy, I continue to feel honored and humbled to have led this great company for the past decade.”

The House of Rolls Royce today revealed images of a Bespoke 2020 Red Phantom, commissioned to benefit (RED), the global charity and its fight to end AIDS.  First sketches of the red-themed creation were revealed by the world’s leading luxury manufacturer seven months ago at the Sotheby’s Galleries in New York City. On Wednesday evening, December 4, The Red Phantom Bespoke Commission will be unveiled at a gala event at the One Thousand Museum in Miami as RM Sotheby’s launches an exclusive online auction to run through December 13, 2019.   Proceeds above the cost of the item* will benefit (RED)’s fight to end AIDS.

The winning collector will have the unique opportunity to collaborate with one of the world’s most respected contemporary artists, Mickalene Thomas, to create a work of art in the form of a custom wrap for the exterior of the car. Thomas will also create an original artwork inspired by the Red Phantom for the collector. When the digital hammer falls, the ultimate bidder will be the proud owner of the Red Phantom, a personalized work and design by Ms. Thomas and the honor of having supported (RED) in its mission.

“It is an honor and privilege to present this one of a kind commission created by the more than 2,000 men and women in Goodwood, Home of Rolls-Royce,” said Martin Fritsches, President and CEO of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Americas. “Everyone on our team is deeply inspired by this world-class commission, and equally by the importance of the cause it was created to support – (RED)’s fight to end AIDS.  We are proud to partner with Mickalene Thomas, RM Sotheby’s and our other partners to achieve an outstanding result from this auction.”

“We’re so grateful to Rolls Royce for donating profits from the Red Phantom to the fight to end AIDS.  We need all forces mobilized against this pandemic which is the leading cause of death among young women. We also want to thank Mickalene Thomas for her creative genius, as well as our partners Bank of America and Netjets for their support of this auction to help the Global Fund wipe AIDS off the planet.” Said Jennifer Lotito, Chief Operations Officer, (RED)

The exterior wears a newly developed Bespoke color finish of Crystal over Magma Red with tiny particles of crystal captured in the final layers of finish creating a luxurious luminescence. The handcrafted Bespoke leather interior in Brilliant Arctic White is offset by bright Mugello Red highlights overseen by the iconic and colorful Mugello Red ‘Shooting Starlight Headliner.’ Housed within a single-piece glass fascia and extending across the instrument panel, the Gallery design, ‘Red Regatta Sails’ is constructed of Bespoke Mugello Red leather.

This Red Phantom is waiting for a home to benefit (RED)’s fight to end AIDS.

About RED Phantom

This very special Red Phantom has been designed to benefit (RED)’s fight to end AIDS.  Proceeds above the cost of the item* will benefit the global charity.

The commission design, by the world-renowned Bespoke Design Collective in Goodwood, England, Home of Rolls-Royce stands alone as a natural authority. Designers have carried the powerful Red theme throughout the design in subtle and luxurious style. This Red Phantom makes a statement, especially upon its regal arrival.

The exterior wears a Bespoke color finish of Crystal over Magma Red. Tiny particles of crystal have been captured in the final layers of finish give it a luxurious luminescence. Recently created by the Rolls-Royce design engineers, the finish is comprised of five layers, each hand-polished for more than five hours. The vehicle’s wood veneers were expertly selected and finished by hand with six coats of lacquer to ensure a perfect finish.

The handcrafted Bespoke leather interior and appointments throughout are created from 9 hides of hand-selected and drum-dyed leather with a color scheme of stunning Arctic White with Mugello Red highlights. And overhead the new owner will enjoy a newly designed icon of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, a Mugello Red Shooting Starlight Headliner with 1,600 fiber optic wires extending the entire length of the interior ceiling.

The new Phantom introduced a Bespoke opportunity previously unseen in luxury motoring to showcase a new level of interior artistry and craftsmanship. Housed within a single-piece glass fascia and extending across the instrument panel, the Gallery delivers visual and emotional elements that are unique to Phantom. The Gallery is constructed of Bespoke Mugello Red leather design entitled ‘Regatta Sails’ assembled in a clean room environment. This commission features custom treadplates commemorating the 115th Anniversary of the world’s premier name in luxury

Cadillac CTS-V

By Vaughn Lowery x Reid Urban x Anthony Sovinsky

Cadillac is widely known for being America’s premier luxury vehicle. As for most luxury vehicles, it is focused on a classy, curb-appealing design with a comfort-oriented ride and top of the line technology. As a result, then appeared the 2004 debut of the Cadillac CTS-V, continuing to meet all the previous high-end expectations with some Olympic level athleticism.

The upgraded 2004 CTS-V inherited the Corvette’s 400-hp 5.7 liter V-8 engine and offered it only in a 6-speed manual, which is a unique addition to a unique consumer: the sports car enthusiast. This was a historical step for Cadillac as they now entered the luxury sport sedan realm with the likes of the BMW M5 and the Mercedes E63 AMG. What better way to make a statement than to be featured in one of the best adrenaline pumping car chase scenes of that time as seen in the 2004 movie The Matrix Reloaded.

Fast forward to its second best debut in 2009, which engraved Cadillac in the record books by setting a lap time of 7:59.32 at the Nurburgring for fastest production sedan. This was achieved with a 556hp supercharged 6.2 liter V8, enhanced handling due to the introduction of magnetic ride control, and brembo brakes on all four corners. This catapulted the CTS-V to the top of the ranks of the sport sedan class in performance,  beating the M5 and E63 AMG respectively from zero to 60 mph.

PRESENT TIME

The CTS-V will continue its reign in the high performance sport sedan category with the introduction of the astounding new and approved 2019 Cadillac CTS-V.

The front-end greets you with very sharp fighter-jet like lines matched with mesh grills and vents. It is clear the intent of the vehicle is to be as aerodynamic and performance-centric as possible. It features a carbon fiber splitter to redirect wind-drag to down force and keep the vehicle firmly planted for increased traction at higher speeds. The hood is also finished in carbon fiber with functional vents strategically placed to perform a variety of roles including: cooling of the high revving power plant, increased aerodynamics, and a slight weight reduction compared to its stock counterpart.

Moving to the rear of the vehicle, the side profile is reminiscent of a base model CTS until you spot the 19-inch forged premium painted alloy wheels wrapped in sticky Michelin Pilot Super Sport Summer-only low profile tires. Peering through the light weight forged alloy wheels are gargantuan racing-inspired six-piston front, four-piston rear, fixed caliper Brembo performance brakes with vented rotors that remind you to not forget the V. Moreover. The rear features a carbon fiber spoiler and rear diffuser accompanied by sport badging and quad pipes that announce top of the line engineering. The aggressiveness of the body suits the power in perfect synergism.

The various performance aesthetics are functional for two reasons: compliment the driver and compliment the engine. Let’s start with the engine. The boisterous opulent sedan is blessed to be a part of an incredible gene pool that continues to be one of the fittest on the road. Well-endowed with a supercharged 6.2L V8 producing 640 horsepower and 630 pound-feet of torque, it plans to be catapulted by this ostentatious hotrod from 0-60 in 3.7 seconds. The horses are put down to the road with an 8-speed automatic transmission available in several drive modes: from the least powerful but still faster than your Eco Mode, to the keep-both-hands-on-the-wheel Track Option. Track mode will tighten the suspension and open all of the cylinders for more power while the transmission will hold gears and have quicker shifts for increased acceleration.

Suspension has been one of the major highlights of the CTS-V since 2009 with the introduction of magnetic ride control. It’s an important feature that reads the road up to one thousand times a second, allowing for incredibly sharp responses from driver input at the wheel. Supplementing “Mag Ride” are multilink MacPherson struts with independent front-and-rear suspension connected to a light-weight stiffened chassis. Such handling technology is especially important to expand the confidence the driver has on and off-track with a vehicle exhibiting as much power, size, and precision as this one embodies.

Interior finishing further address the performance capabilities, as it is fitted with Recaro racing seats up front that are tastefully badged with the V-series logo. Designed for a glove-tight fit for both driver and passenger, the racing-inspired seats keep you firmly situated to resist lateral G forces while hauling through twist and turns through your favorite canyons. However, also comfortable enough to endure a lengthy road trip or frequenting your executive meetings at the office. Rear seats comfortably sit three full-sized adults allowing for a total of four in tow. Don’t worry! It will take more weight than a cabin full of people to slow this bad boy down. The infotainment system is equally accessible to both passenger and driver for ease of use. Simple and straight forward, controls are all touch sensitive as to make the dash sleek and non-distracting. Additionally, the souped-up caddy is laced with some cool features including automatic window shades for more privacy, a digital rear view mirror that allows for more greater vision surrounding the vehicle, blind spot indicators, and Apple Carplay that is compatible with Siri for ease of use and hands-free connectivity with your super car.

Base models for the CTS-V are priced just at $86,995, which is a great value per dollar of horsepower you receive comparatively to other vehicles in its class. Not only that but you have the option to deck it out and become a real show-stopper with carbon fiber and Recaro seat package, which will put you over the 100k mark with a price tag of $106,000. All-in-all, the 2019 Cadillac CTS-V is one of the best performance sport sedans in the world and deserves a spot in your garage.
