Napoleon Dynamite – cast reunion

Key cast members of the 2004 comedy film “Napoleon Dynamite” will be reuniting virtually in a special pre-recorded program available at 5:00 pm PST/8:00 pm EST on December 4 on YouTube. The hosted reunion will be the first time many of the cast have interacted since the film first burst out of the Sundance Film Festival and became an international smash.

Jon Heder (Napoleon), Efren Ramirez (Pedro), Jon Gries (Uncle Rico), Tina Majorino (Deb), Haylie Duff (Summer) and, Shondrella Avery (LaFawnduh) are joined by several other surprise cast members for the program. The event will also serve as a fundraiser for The Hunger Project (thp.org) to end hunger worldwide. 

Entitled “Cyber Dynamite” due to its virtual nature, the online reunion follows in the footsteps of other recent pop culture online reunions, and while it will be free to view, donations are being sought to support The Hunger Project. In addition, a select group of special items from some of the cast will be available by raffle to donors contributing $75 or more. ANDERSON .PAAK RECEIVES TWO GRAMMY NOMINATIONS

Esteemed singer, songwriter, producer, and three-time Grammy Award Winner Anderson .Paak has been nominated for two Grammys. The nominations are for Best Music Video: “Lockdown” and Best Melodic Rap Performance: “Lockdown”. Both follow his Best R&B Album win for Ventura and Best R&B Performance win for “Come Home” featuring Andre 3000 earlier this year. He won his first Grammy in 2019 for Best Rap Performance for his song, “Bubblin.”

.Paak released his highly regarded single “Lockdown” earlier this year on Juneteenth via Aftermath Entertainment, exclusively distributed by 12Tone Music, LLC. Inspiration for the song came from .Paak’s participation in a Los Angeles Black Lives Matter protest where peaceful protestors were being shot with rubber bullets by the police. A video directed by Dave Meyers featuring Andra Day, Jay Rock, Syd, SiR, Dumbfoundead & Dominic Fike followed in addition to a bundle including the remix with JID, Noname, and Jay Rock. The cast & crew who participated in the “Lockdown” video donated their salaries to Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective (BEAM), Dream Defenders, and Color of Change.

Born Brandon Paak Anderson in Oxnard, California, the three-time Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter, and producer played drums as a teen in his church band and later famously worked at a marijuana farm, all while honing his musical chops pursuing his dreams. Following their acclaimed project with Travis Scott and fashion house Saint Laurent, 12on12 announced their latest collaboration with cultural icons and hip-hop legends RUN DMC.

The pioneering New York group have curated an exclusive limited edition 12″ vinyl-only compilation with bespoke artwork by rising LA artist Reena Tolentino, aka ‘RT’. 12on12 RUN DMC limited edition vinyl will be released on the 8th December by 12on12.

The 12on12 deluxe, double disc package is limited to 500 hand-numbered editions and embodies the story of RUN-DMC’s legacy within the handpicked iconic track-listing, featuring songs that inspired, affected and changed the ground-breaking group’s music.

The first release in celebration of the 35th anniversary of seminal 1986 album Raising Hell, RUN DMC pay tribute to their late bandmate Jam Master Jay and dedicate this project in his honour.

The release offers a fascinating insight into RUN DMC, one of the most influential groups of all time. Alongside tracks by early rap trailblazers The Sugarhill Gang and Afrika Bambaataa, the group have also highlighted songs that helped form the sonic foundations of the nascent hip hop sound as it emerged and evolved in New York in the early 1980s, including the breaks-goldmine of MFSB’s Love Is The Message and Kraftwerk’s game-changing Trans-Europe Express, a song rarely licensed for any compilation.

The unique work of art for the record has been designed by one of the most exciting names on the LA art scene, Reena Tolentino. A visual artist and actor, RT’s work rose to prominence after her acclaimed mural of late basketball icon Kobe Bryant. In addition to providing artwork and portraits of RUN DMC for the project she has also reinterpreted one of the most iconic hip-hop logo’s of all time with a rework of the classic RUN DMC logo.

The release continues to cement 12on12’s reputation for unique ‘vinylworks’ and bespoke collectors’ editions that live at the intersection of music, art and pop culture, providing a unique canvas for cultural icons to curate the soundtracks to their lives.

INNOVATORS. ORIGINATORS. RUN DMC’s influence on the music of the new millennium goes every bit as deep as that of Elvis Presley or The Beatles. With a career that has spanned over 30 years and 30 million record sales, the trio set the stage not only for themselves, but for an industry, for a generation and for generations to come.

Joseph “DJ Run” Simmons, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, and the late great Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell roared out of Hollis, Queens with 1983’s “It’s Like That”/”Sucker MCs”, transforming R&B party funk with a new combination of sparse beats and hard production textures. Within a year, they took another giant step by combining rock guitar with hip-hop in the single “Rock Box.”

The huge popularity of RUN DMC produced rap’s first gold album (RUN-DMC, 1984) and its first platinum album (King of Rock, 1985). RUN DMC’s 1986 album ”Raising Hell” caused an even greater cross-cultural explosion with their hard-core hip-hop classic “My Adidas” and collaboration with Aerosmith on “Walk This Way” – a track that redefined genre boundaries and put rap in the Billboard Pop Top 10 for the first time ever.

RUN DMC have always been trailblazers, the first rappers to appear on MTV, American Bandstand, Saturday Night Live and the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. They were the first rap act nominated for a Grammy Award (Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Group, 1986 for Raising Hell). Tragedy struck the group when Jam Master Jay was murdered in his recording studio on October 30, 2002. Shocked and saddened by the loss of their band mate Run and DMC went their separate ways. As they told the media, “We lost our drummer, we’re not RUN DMC without Jay.”

In 2009 RUN DMC were inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and in 2011 Rolling Stone named them one of the 50 Greatest Artists of All Time. Rev Run and DMC started performing together again at select shows to help bring attention and funding to the Jam Master Jay Foundation, continuing to inspire new generations of fans with the same verve they showed over three decades

About Doja Cat

Born and raised in L.A., Doja Cat made her first upload to Soundcloud in 2013 at just 16-years-old. She developed a knack for music by studying piano and dance as a kid and listening to the likes of Busta Rhymes, Erykah Badu, Nicki Minaj, Drake, and more. The Museum of Art × Photography to launch digitally

The Museum of Art & Photography (MAP) will launch digitally on Saturday, 5 December, an opportunity to reach global audiences with the great art of the sub-continent. Their new building delayed by COVID, MAP nevertheless moves ahead,  presenting a week-long virtual program of events entitled Art (is) Life and inaugurating their Museums Without Borders initiative.

MAP’s digital platform will offer curated experiences, allowing audiences to interact with MAP’s exhibitions and events from the comfort of their homes at any time.  MAP has a growing collection of over 18,000 artworks, predominantly from the subcontinent and dating from the 10th century to the present, with concentrations in Pre-Modern Art, Modern and Contemporary Art, Photography, Folk and Tribal Art, Popular Culture, Textiles, Craft and Design.

Founder-Trustee of MAP, Abhishek Poddar says, “Our vision at MAP is to reach out to people from all walks of life and make the collection available to the world. Then why should we wait for a physical museum to come up? Launching digitally is the organic next step for MAP, achieving our agenda of inclusion and accessibility. To be truly relevant museums and cultural institutions need to always rethink and reinvent themselves, Even more so in challenging times like these. MAP’s digital launch is a week-long program of events titled Art (is) Life from 5-11 December, 2020. N. Goswamy, filmmaker Nandita Das, and visual artist, Jitish Kallat. Each subsequent day of the program will celebrate one of the six departments of the museum’s collection including a commissioned performance. Each day’s programs will air twice, making them convenient for all time zones at 7pm (IST) and again at 5pm (EST)

“Art (is) Life is a culmination of everything we hope our museum to be,” says Kamini Sawhney, the Director of MAP. “The opening program will showcase how the arts are interconnected, each enriching the others. This is reflective of the Museum’s vision to draw connections across the collection, creating unique narratives. We are working on creative ways to bring art to everyone. The launch program of commissioned performances and collaborations with international institutions is  a  preview for what is to come regularly with MAP.”

The program will also launch the first five episodes of Museums Without Borders, video collaborations with 50 international institutions that will juxtapose a pair of objects, one from an international collection and one from MAP’s, to discover the differences and connections. Participating institutions include the British Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), The Morgan Library and Museum, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Vitra Design Museum, and the Rhode School of Design. This dialogue between the objects will be presented by curators from both institutions. Museums Without Borders allows audiences to discover new narratives and make comparisons without travel, an interesting alternative to gallery displays.

In a special performance directed by Sharanya Ramprakash, the artists of Udupi Yakshagana Kendra will reimagine an artwork from MAP’s collection depicting a fight from the Hindu epic, Ramayana, between Jatayu and Ravana to save Sita from being taken to Lanka. MAP’s Shubhasree Pirkayastha explores highlights from our indigenous art collection, these objects act as a tribute to traditional storytelling. Plus the second installment of our Museum Without Borders series, this episode in conjunction with the Rhode Island School of Design, discussing two pioneering indigenous artists in our collections – India’s Jangarh Singh Shyam and Canada’s Kenojuak Ashevak.

MAP’s Director, Kamini Sawhney takes us through highlights from the collection, revealing how India’s traditional art practices, myths, and legends inspire our modern and contemporary practitioners. Plus the fourth instalment of our Museum Without Borders series, this episode with The British Museum, London,  looking at artworks from our respective collections – Trumpeters by the acclaimed Pahari painter, Nainsukh and Drummer by Tyeb Mehta – humming the same tune across centuries.

MAP’s Nathaniel Gaskill takes us on a journey through photography in the collection.  Plus the sixth instalment of our Museum Without Borders series, this episode with The Morgan Library and Museum, New York, looking at the works of two photographers – Malick Sidibé’s Chemise and a selection of images from Suresh Punjabi’s Suhag Studio.
