EARTHGANG & Bon Iver Reimagine Brittany Howard

Today, ATO Records released a pair of remixes of songs from Brittany Howard’s acclaimed debut solo album, Jaime. Atlanta-based hip hop duo EARTHGANG reimagines Goat Head and Bon Iver brings fresh textures to Short and Sweet. The tracks are the first to be revealed from an upcoming collection of remixes from Jaime. Since its release last September, the album has won widespread praise from critics, earning placement on “best of” lists by The New York Times, NPR, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Pitchfork and many others, plus fans and fellow artists.

With the addition of two new verses, EARTHGANG take Goat Head, Howard’s highly personal account of growing up as a mixed-race child in a small Southern town at the turn of the 21st century and turn it into a bold anthem for 2020’s social justice movement. Listen HERE.

EARTHGANG explains, “We’ve been big fans of Brittany and Alabama Shakes, so this is a dream come true. Songs like these help us make sense of all the craziness in the world at times. Her song Goat Head, dealing with her black experience in America and The World, resonated the loudest at this time. Just thankful to be able to give the world our medicine and heal the people.”

Bon Iver adds rich layers to Short and Sweet a song celebrating a nascent romance that Howard originally recorded alone, accompanying herself on acoustic guitar and imbues it with a twinkling, ethereal vibe that both complements and contrasts its old-time warmth. Listen HERE.

“Brittany is a truly singular artist; so much power and musicality. This album speaks to so many people, including us,” says Justin Vernon, founder of the GRAMMY-winning band Bon Iver. “To have a chance to recreate Short and Sweet in our own image with long-time collaborators Jenn Wassner and CJ Camerieri, was both an honor and almost too much of a privilege.”

Howard will perform on The Late Late Show with James Corden on Tuesday, September 29. She will serve as guest editor of the Oxford Americans 22nd annual Southern Music issue, which will be available on newsstands November 25. Howard is nominated for three 2020 Americana Honors & Awards Album Of The Year, Artist Of The Year and Song Of The Year (Stay High). A four-time GRAMMY winner for her work with Alabama ShakesHoward spoke about women’s equality and finding her voice in the latest episode of Women Who Rock: Music & Mentorship, which aired recently on TODAY. View the interview HERE and watch her performance of Georgia HERE.

Putting Short and Sweet on the playlist she created for GQPhoebe Bridgers said, “[Howard’s] solo record is beyond what I thought was even possible.” Conor Oberst recently told The New York Times, “I’ve also been listening to a lot of the Brittany Howard Jaime record. I’ve always thought highly of Alabama Shakes, but it wasn’t until I heard this record that I realized she’s a national treasure.”

Jaime was awarded four stars by Rolling StoneMOJO and Q and named the Best Album of 2019 by NPR. The track History Repeats received two GRAMMY nominations. Stay High spent three weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult Alternative Songs chart. It was Public Radio’s Most Popular Song of 2019 and named by Pitchfork and others as of the year’s best songs. Refinery29 said, “This feel-good gem will get you through any rough times and slap a smile back on your face.”

In this feature, The New Yorker praised Jaime as “deep, freaky, and heartfelt,” and said it shares “spiritual DNA with two of the boldest and most stylistically inscrutable releases of the past century: Black Messiah, the third album by the R. & B. singer D’Angelo, and Sly and the Family Stone’s There’s a Riot Goin’ On.” Hailing Jaime as “a candid autobiography in funk,” The New York Times said, “With a voice that can go to the roadhouse, the church or deeply private places, she exorcises troubles with the music’s sheer pleasure”

“What a Wonderful World” Music Video

For the first time ever, the Louis Armstrong classic, “What a Wonderful World,” is getting a music video.

The song, which was released in 1967, has become as iconic as Armstrong himself and is Verve‘s most streamed jazz song with more than a billion streams.

You can see the video by clicking right here. With every single frame created by hand by Springtime Jellyfish, it’s beautiful and meticulous enough to make you believe that the world truly can be wonderful, even with everything going on today.

Written by George David Weiss and Bob Thiele, it was meant to heal a nation in the middle race riots and anti-war protests. Does that sound at all familiar? Maybe this is the perfect time for the song’s video to be released.

Louis Armstrong is also the perfect voice for the song of multiple generations.

Bob Thiele said, “We wanted this immortal musician and performer to say, as only he could, the world really is great: full of the love and sharing people make possible for themselves and each other every day.”

Released by ABC Records, it wasn’t originally a hit. It topped charts overseas, but didn’t become a megahit in the United States when it was featured in “Good Morning Vietnam.” It cruised up the Billboard chart to No. 33 and became a mainstay in American pop culture. It was eventually inducted into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame in 1999.

The video was released in honor of Armstrong’s birthday, premiering on Facebook and reaching over 5 million views.

It’s now available right here for anyone to see and be reminded of how wonderful the world truly is.

Eric Bellinger – SOLO’N

Today, Grammy-winning songwriter and R&B artist Eric Bellinger releases his catchy second single SOLO’N from his upcoming album Eric B for President: Term 3 releasing via YFS Music/EMPIRE on October 30. Produced by Smash David and Lowky, the magnetic new track shows Bellinger as he falls in love with a strong, independent woman and strives to give her the luxurious life she deserves.

The music video, inspired by his real-life relationship with his wife, gives fans a peek into the start of their romance. SOLO’N follows last week’s release GODLY and he will continue with weekly song and video releases telling a continuous story.

“SOLO’N is definitely one of my personal favorites on the album,” explains Bellinger. “Nursery rhyme melody vibes on the hook make sure you know the words by the time the 2nd chorus comes around, and it’s stuck in your head after the song is done playing! The entire project is in chronological order and is based off the back story of me meeting and solidifying the relationship between me & my 1st lady. The album starts with GODLY, a record where I’m showcasing that I got all my shit together. I’m in position. I’m up at this point and I’ve worked on myself so I can be ready for that special someone. SOLO’N sets the scene. Introducing those first passages of convo from text messages to FaceTimes giving listeners an inside look at the moments that brought us together throughout our timeline of love.”

Eric B For President: Term 3 follows Optimal Music, an album collaboration with longtime business partner Nieman Johnson. The project debuted in April and features Young Thug, Jeremih, Joe Moses, and more. This year, Bellinger also shared another album Scenarios a collaboration with Grammy-winning producer Chase-N-Cash and the thoughtful single Enough written about police brutality and released during the BLM protests.

The three-CD box set contains 16 previously unreleased tracks, including five live performances recorded in December 2019 during Twain’s residency at Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood, Las Vegas, and an entire “Shania Vocal Mix” containing early takes of 11 songs from nearly a year before the album’s release. In addition to the five Las Vegas performances, the “Live & Remixed” disc, available on both the two- and three-CD editions, features two tracks recorded in September 1998 at Dallas’ Reunion Arena for the Shania: Live DVD that also was carried on DirecTV; and nine remixes that show how Twain and producer, Robert John “Mutt” Lange, continued to adapt her sound as she began to cross into pop and international markets – and even into dance clubs.

Eight of the 12 songs from The Woman in Meappeared on Billboard’s country singles chart, with four – “Any Man of Mine,” “(If You’re Not in It for Love) I’m Outta Here!,” “You Win My Love” and “No One Needs to Know” – reaching No. 1. “Any Man of Mine” also gave Twain her first Top 40 crossover hit. The Woman in Me spent 29 weeks atop the country albums chart and was 1995’s best-selling country album. It won a GRAMMY for Best Country Album in 1996 and later was ranked No. 8 on CMT’s list of 40 Greatest Country Albums.

The Woman in Me: Diamond Edition is accompanied by a 48-page booklet containing liner notes from Twain, a 3,000-word essay written by renowned pop-culture journalist Eve Barlow, and photographs from John Derek, Albert Sanchez, Mark Tucker, Bo Derek, and Alexander E. Harbaugh.

The Woman in Me, Twain’s second album, debuted at No. 65 on the Billboard country chart in February 1995, entering the Billboard 200 three weeks later at 197. The album continued to climb steadily, finally hitting No. 1 on the country chart in July, the same week “Any Man of Mine” became Twain’s first chart-topping country single. By that point, the album was already gold; by the end of 1995, it had sold 4 million copies, making it the year’s top-selling country album. In 1996, it passed Patsy Cline’s Greatest Hits to become the best-selling album by a female country artist (a title Twain’s 1997 follow-up, Come on Over, would claim in 1999). The Woman in Me reached Diamond status for shipments of 10 million copies in 1997, then 12 million in 2000. It has sold an estimated 20 million copies worldwide.

Twain has sold 48 million albums in the US, making her the sixth best-selling female artist in the country, and 100 million albums worldwide. She is the only female artist to have three consecutive albums certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association for shipments of 10 million units.
