Celebrity-Designed Bag Auction for Chema Vision Children’s Center

Big Hearted Celebrities Act Fast to Help Children from Kibera Slum Go to School

Naomi Campbell, Halle Berry, Lenny Kravitz, Zoe Kravitz, Usher, Lionel Richie, Eddie Murphy, Evan Ross, Maggie Q, Raquel Bitton, Chrome Hearts and more come together using art and fashion so that students at Kibera’s Chema Vision Children’s Center can receive a quality education and a daily meal.

LA’s art and luxury fashion retailer to the stars Church Boutique and the eco-fashion house Ministry of Tomorrow (MOT) have teamed up with Christie’s and their charity auction partner Charitybuzz to produce “Art for Education”– the inaugural celebrity art auction fundraiser to benefit the Chema Vision Children’s Center (Chema) in Nairobi, Kenya.

The Chema School is situated in the midst of Kibera, Africa’s largest urban slum. The Chema School was established to provide quality education for some of Kibera’s most vulnerable children. Many of the students are orphans or children of single parents without income to pay for school fees.

Just before the pandemic, Chema was forced to relocate because the school structure was not up to code.  MOT’s vegan bag production facility is located near the school and Julian Prolman, president of MOT heard about the school’s dilemma. Through an initial fundraiser orchestrated by MOT, Chema was able to relocate to a safe building. However, Chema is currently lacking much needed funds to pay its teachers and cover its operational expenses that includes a daily meal for the students.

When Church Boutique’s founders Rodney Burns and David Malvaney learned about the urgent need at Chema from their supply partner MOT, whose branded bags are featured at The Church Boutique, they quickly reached out to their celebrity friends to request their support. Celebrities will be painting their artistic expressions on MOT’s new organic canvas tote bags that will be auctioned online through Christie’s auction partner, Charitybuzz, starting June 1, 2021 with the final bid accepted on June 16.

Prior to the auction launch, the bags will be on display from May 19– 26 at Church Boutique in Hollywood, CA, and then brought to New York where the bags will be on display at Christie’s during the auction.

Without hesitation, Rodney and David’s luminary friends offered to help including Naomi Campbell, Halle Berry, Lenny Kravitz, Zoe Kravitz, Usher, Lionel Richie, Eddie Murphy, Maggie Q, Evan Ross and Raquel Bitton, with more mega stars soon to be announced. In addition, Laurie Lynn Stark, the creator of the international jewelry and clothing brand Chrome Hearts, has joined in to create her own unique MOT tote.

“We believe that luxury is a privilege that comes with the responsibility to care for others in need and therefore we are thrilled to collaborate with MOT to do what we can to make a difference in the lives of children born into challenging circumstances” said Rodney Burns.

The opening minimum bid for each one-of-a-kind celebrity designed bag will begin at $1,000.

All proceeds from the auction will be donated to Chema to help fund the schools operating budget with a goal to raise $100k.

“Chema is a Swahili word meaning something good, and that is what we are trying to do with Art for Education” said Julian Prolman.

mowna’s Avant Premiere MUD WATER event features Women Filmmakers

The Avant Premiere opens with the “Freedom Music” video by Lisa Bonet, followed by an introduction to MUD WATER by the filmmakers, the world premiere screening of the film, and a Q&A with directors, crew & cast including My-Linh Le, and star Xavier Days. The event will culminate in an afterparty in the mowna party room.

MUD WATER

Weaving together myth, movement, and snapshots of real life, MUD WATER is about a crew of turfers preparing for an upcoming dance battle and a man in search of his shadow.  The cast of Mud Water consists entirely of real dancers who are recognized in the turfing community as well as globally in the world of freestyle dance. Main actors Yung Phil (Turf Feinz), Dopey Fresh, Intricate, and No Name – who play themselves – are local turfers from Oakland, San Francisco, and surrounding areas.

“Getting an Avant premiere with mowna feels like one of those really lucky, synergistic moments that we’ve had throughout the making of this film. For one, I love that we’re on the same page about being ambitious and daring in our experimentation while sticking closely to authenticity. mowna and MUD WATER are of the same kind: we don’t care about high horses or usual ways of doing things, we’re just here to make the time of our lives, blowing past expectations,” said director, My-Linh Le.

Freedom Music

The Freedom Music video, by Lisa Bonet, is a part of the #FreedomRemix movement, made by a predominantly female crew and features over 100 women of all ages celebrating liberation, by Dorothy, featuring Angel Haze. The project is directed by Lisa Bonet and produced by We Are Hear. Executive Producers include Linda Perry and Kerry Brown.

“This was a beautiful collaboration of dance activism. We have here, the power of women assembling, dancing, celebrating ~ protecting…the joyful participation in the sorrows of the world. The way forward is through paths yet known. Carrying in our hearts, Above All Do No Harm. We must teach this to our children. We come fierce, like mama rhino guarding her young, all the while feeding our Joy. We sway to the songs of our ancestors.” said Lisa Bonet.

About the 2021 mowna Online Biennial

The deadline for submissions for the 2021 mowna Online Biennial has been extended through March 16, 2021.  For submission guidelines, please click here.

As large institutions cancel shows, the art that is being made currently will not be seen, might be lost, or perhaps considered irrelevant by a show that is scheduled as far off as 2022. The pandemic has forced art institutions to reassess their business models and ethics and address the inequality that exists within the art world. Some venues have shut down permanently, others struggle to stay afloat. With all of this going on we are currently witnessing a two-year gap in the art world’s exhibition schedule. The Museum of Wild and Newfangled Art addresses this crisis through hosting the 2021 mowna Online Biennial through their humane platform facilitated by a sustainable business model that exhibits and supports a diverse range of art and artists right now. The 2021 mowna Online Biennial opens April 30th, 2021, exhibiting an international pool of 100 artists. This is mowna‘s largest show of the year showcasing international art made in 2019 – 2021. The Biennial includes all forms of art, inviting artists to consider new ways to exhibit their work online and to consider how artwork translates through mowna’s digital platform.

mowna is currently receiving a constant stream of submissions for the Biennial, with 42 countries represented so far. Because of the traction, the call for submissions for the 2021 mowna Biennial is extended through March 16 and may include interactive experiences, movement, abstract, play, sound, street, fashion, animations, live performance, photography, illusions, nature, software, video art, memes, writing, bots, gifs, vr, ar, xr, painting, sculpture, sketches, theater, poetry, opera, cinema, and other creative things only you can dream up.

Official artist selections for the 2021 mowna Online Biennial will be announced on April 9, 2021, and the opening party will take place on April 30, 2021.

About mowna

mowna seeks to create an ever-changing, fun, thoughtful, beautifully designed space to encourage awareness and mindfulness through the exhibition and experience of art and serves the public’s need for art for the highest good of all.  By addressing the current needs of not only the artist but also the audience, mowna is breaking barriers within the global art community.

mowna offers the preservation of artworks through an online collection that is an educational resource and archive for its members and its artists, and aims to find, display, and support wild and newfangled art through the incorporation of innovative new technologies and ways. mowna provides artists with financial compensation for their art and expands awareness of their talents via a sustainable platform where they can flourish.

Instyle June Cover Stars

Instyle June Issue On sale May 17th

The cast of Big Little Lies is covering InStyle’s June issue with 5 separate covers: Reese WitherspoonNicole KidmanShailene WoodleyZoe Kravitz and Laura Dern.

The lives of the cast have overlapped in myriad ways. Nicole and Reese have a production partnership (Big Little Lies is their brainchild). Reese starred with Laura in Wild. Laura starred with Shailene in The Fault in Our Stars. Shailene starred with Zoë in Divergent. Nicole has known Zoë since she dated her father, Lenny Kravitz, 16 years ago. And so it goes. These women’s relationships run much deeper than “ensemble cast”; rather, they have influenced and enriched each other’s lives.

  • Reese: I had a conversation last week that I never would have had seven years ago. It was about compensation: what a woman would make on a project versus what a guy in a similar position would make. I went to the mat for that woman. She’ll never know I made that call or had that conversation with the head of a studio. But I said to him, “This is the comp. This white guy over here is making this amount of money, and she’s done this, that, and the other with such success—and you’re asking for her to have a third of that. That’s not OK with me.”
  • Shailene: In my early 20s I got rid of everything I owned and lived out of a carry-on. I loved it. As I got older I really craved a home, but now I find myself hungry for constant change again.
  • Zoe: I dealt with eating disorders in high school and my early 20s. I always felt like I needed to look like a supermodel to do my job, which I don’t. The supermodels are doing it quite well. But when you’re starting your career, you think you have to be the hot girl who can play some guy’s girl- friend. And then you work more, and you grow up. With Big Little Lies, we were all so hungry to play real characters. It’s not about what we look like, it’s about what we feel like.
  • Laura Dern: Not at all. “Ambition” was a dirty word for women when I was a little girl. Women who are ambitious are cold, calculating, and unsexy—that was the idea presented to my generation. To be sexy was to be demure, subservient even. And I was raised by actresses, like my mother [Diane Ladd], my godmother Shelley Winters, my mom’s friend Jane Fonda, and Gena Rowlands. I saw powerful women as artists or daring to challenge the medical profession and fighting to be doctors—but they weren’t in a boardroom. They weren’t CEOs. That’s where the pants came in. And women didn’t wear pants, so they couldn’t do that.
  • Nicole Kidman: Other people are o doing things like having a girls’ weekend. I don’t have that because I go home. I want to be with my children and my husband [singer-songwriter Keith Urban]. I will sort of get lost in a character or whatever I’m doing, but I’m constantly working to keep that balance. …… I go home to hug my kids. Literally, I’ll go in and snuggle them. They’ll always be waiting up. I’ll hug my husband too. The greatest thing our family priest told us very early on in our marriage was, “Always kiss hello and kiss goodbye.” It just keeps you connected.

BLACK ATLASS

Critically acclaimed Canadian alternative R&B troubadour Black Atlass premiered the music video for his new single “My Life”today. Newly signed to XO/Republic Records, this marks his very first release for the label.

Watch it HERE.

The song is available now via XO/Republic Records HERE.

Over a soundtrack of darkly dusky beats, Black Atlass’s voice immediately engages, entrances, and enraptures on “My Life. Once again bringing together the past, present and future, the video sees him take over an empty old ornate movie theater intercut with images of a transfixing love interest whose stark beauty is matched only by the song’s expansive melodies. It’s the perfect glimpse at his “genre-less”sound and style

Long before he linked up with game-changers XO, Black Atlass first emerged in 2013 with his debut single “Paris. Transporting listeners to a hypnotic musical destination (conjured from his bedroom in Canada), he cast a quiet spell over music fans and gatekeepers alike. As his songs racked up millions of streams, he would be embraced by the fashion world. Louis Vuitton scored an exhibit with his music as another song soundtracked a Saint Laurent men’s fragrance ad. Alexander Wang even placed him alongside Kylie Jenner, Vince Staples, Zoe Kravitz, and Lexi Boling in a high-profile campaign. He personally produced his 2016 full-length Haunted Paradise and embedded himself in the thoughts and hearts of listeners everywhere. Signed by his idol The Weeknd and often thinking “What would my favorite film directors do?”, Black Atlass stands poised to bring R&B to another dimension in 2018.
