Gen-Z Fashion

The Essence for Y2K Fashion

By Andrea Esteban

Let’s face it : Old-fashioned ‘90s are back again — and yes, that involves all of those Y2K fashion trends you’ve probably hidden in the back of your wardrobe. Today, I’ll share all you need to know about Y2K fashion trends, and how Y2K fashion icons can inspire you to dress like a Gen-Z nowadays.

Here are my top tips to what is fashionable at the moment:

  • Where did the Y2K fashion trend come from?

Y2K fashion boomed across the mid-late 1990s and early 2000s. It doesn’t only refer to fashion, but it also refers to the technology and computer bug that people thought would happen on New Year’s day in 2000.

Y2K culture was marked by luxurious consumerism. Gen-Z were always trying to look for the most expensive monograms and designer brands including on clothing, accessories or perfumes that reflected the idea of ‘being contemporary’. Brands like Channel, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Dior were the most coveted.

We can’t forget that Y2K Culture was also shaped by streetwear trends including: designers’ logos, bling, D-rings, exposed zippers, belts, straps in line with the idea of the up to date technology.

  • What is Y2K Fashion?

Aesthetics and trends typically worn between the late ‘90s and the year 2000. What are the first items that come to your mind when you think about those years? Of course you can’t help remembering the crop tops, the velour tracksuits, the camis, the sparkly shoes or the low-rise jeans, all in the shiny black tone and reflective metallic color palette.

Casual clothing and leisurewear were also big fashion trends of the early 2000s. Denim became a significant staple for Gen-Z, going beyond skirts to jeans, hats and jackets. If you want to design a casual Y2K style , keep in mind that the denim staple is worn with all kinds of clothes including hoodies, crop tops & off the shoulder tops, ribbed sweaters with trainers, platform sandals, sneakers or boots.

  • How Can you get the Y2K Look nowadays? Get inspired!

Many of Y2K fashion inspiration can be taken from the pop culture icons of our early childhood involving celebrities, films and even video clips. Bratz Dolls, Mean Girls, Uptown Girls and Clueless are great fashion examples of inspiration for the Y2K appearance since these main characters loved over-dressing, with eye-catching colors.

One  of the essential features of Y2K fashion were accessories. Think of several of the typical staples from your wardrobe. Pieces like tiny sunglasses, mini-bags, bandanas or scrunchies clips are tendences now. Also, one key feature were rhinestones which are used as decorations for accessories like chokers, belts or hats

Finally, early ’00s makeup tendencies walked by ‘Euphoria’ smokey eyes, highlighting, colored eyeliner, glittery eyeshadow, false eyelashes, glossy lips, skinny brows and matte foundations. There’s no disagreeing that our current looks have been deeply induced by ’00s beauty icons like Tyra Banks, Paris Hilton, Laura Harrier, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Halle Berry. For you to get some inspiration when doing your make-up, I have gathered together the 5 most powerful and influential makeup trends worn by celebrities of the early 2000s in events like MTV Awards, Grammys, Brit Awards or even at the Oscars.

Mooski – Soul Bleed

Mooski, the ever-vulnerable sensation from Opp, Alabama, returns with another raw journal entry of a song, “Soul Bleed.” His latest single is an anthem for the broken-hearted and also a slap that will shake rear-view mirrors for the rest of us. Listen HERE. The emotional track, out now via Capitol Records appears on the breakthrough artist’s forthcoming mixtape, Melodic Therapy 4 The Broken due out March 11th. Pre-order/pre-save HERE.

“Soul Bleed” once again finds Mooski opening his heart and mind for fans. Over somber yet thumping production, he spills every raw feeling about a scarring romantic relationship. In every line, Mooski conveys regret with refreshing transparency.

Mooski‘s willingness to be open about his personal experience has captivated a massive and growing audience. “I talk about the unspoken,” he says. Before “Soul Bleed,” Mooski won over fans with soul-baring hits like “Zodiac Killer” and “Track Star,” which has become an online sensation, racking up 475+ million views on TikTok, 42+ million global streams and RIAA certified Platinum. The “Track Star” TikTok challenge inspired videos from Keyshia Cole, Lala Anthony, Dream Doll, and Halle Berry, among others. Additionally, Trey Songz and Chris Brown both remixed it.

Before Mooski recorded emotional records for his fans, he served them as a sergeant during a four-year tenure in the Marine Corps. He left the service to pursue his true passion and started releasing freestyle videos on social media. Pleasantly surprised by the response, he soon realized that vulnerable stories got the most traction. “Soul Bleed” is another testament to Mooski’s work ethic, unflinching introspection, and continued artistic growth. Few artists can turn personal experiences into universal hits, but Mooski has done it again.

About Mooski

The whole world is buzzing about Mooski thanks to the popularity of his runaway smash single “Track Star.” The versatile 24-year-old has been riding a wave of success since releasing the track last June, but his journey has been anything but easy. Born Darien Hinton, Mooski was raised in a religious household in Opp, Alabama, where he grew up listening to and performing faith-based music. The second oldest of four kids, Mooski and his mother and sisters were often part of the praise and worship services at their church, and it wasn’t uncommon to find family members singing around the home. Despite their faithful foundation, Mooski’s childhood was marred by both parents’ struggles with poor health, and arguments between his mom and dad often revolved around the financial toll taken due to frequent ambulance calls to their home.

Determined to start earning income to help with bills and buy his own clothes, Mooski began working part-time jobs when he was only 15, building a strong work ethic that would serve him well when he joined the Marine Corps at just 18-years-old. “I talk about the unspoken,” Mooski says. “When people listen to my music they’re going to be like, ‘Mooski was in my head.’ It’s going to be personal to them. I know how depression works. I didn’t grieve my father’s death until two years [after the fact]. I’m going to talk about things I was thinking and things I was going through, stuff I didn’t want to talk about. I’m going to put it in the music because I know these are things everybody is going through.”

Asiahn – Fall Back

R&B singer/songwriter Asiahn turns up the heat while taking it slow on her sultry new single, Fall Back, out today. Since the 80s / Motown Records. The track, an age-old tale of falling too hard and too fast, comes alongside a wine-soaked video that follows the intimate push-and-pull between two not-yet-official lovers. Watch the video.

As she’s proven before, Asiahn has a keen ability to dissect every emotion and stage of romance with a vulnerability that’s immediately felt. On Fall Back she boldly takes the reins, and sounds more convincing than ever. I just want to drive you crazy, she teases, over sizzling synth, bursts of sax, and glistening harp. But she’s not here to seduceߞnot yet.

Remarkably, Asiahn wrote Fall Back in about 15 minutes alongside producer Dreek Beatz. The story behind the song is, well, true, she laughs. I know we’ve all been in a situation where we’re trying to get to know someone casually. Then, of course, she falls in love anyways. It’s a song telling that person to fall back, you doing too much. Let’s just get to know each other and see if getting serious is even something we want to do. The video shows that conversation in action, from flirty Post-it notes to a playfully tipsy tete-a-tete.

A fan of all things futuristic and tech, Asiahn has teamed up with Verizon, Capitol Music Group (CMG) and Motown Records to give fans a new way to experience a music video. Using the ASIAHN app, fans can extend Asiahn’s “Fall Back” music video into their living rooms with Augmented Reality (AR). As the video plays on their TV or laptop, they can toggle between an ambient AR experience that plays in sync with the video and a volumetric capture (360-degree capture) of Asiahn dancing to her song in their room. The ASIAHN app, available September 29th on the Google Play and Apple ap stores, is the second project in Verizon and Capitol Music Group/Motown’s Emerging Tech and Emerging Artist Series.

Fall Back continues the Los Angeles-based artist’s transition from lovesick songstress to empowered star, as showcased on her Motown debut, The Interlude EP, released earlier this year. The EP debuted on multiple Billboard charts and earned Asiahn Billboard‘s Emerging Artist Spotlight, started at #33 on Apple Music Charts, and received support from fans and critics like Halle Berry, Lena Waithe, Keke Palmer, to American Songwriter Essence,Nylon,Refinery29, MarieClaire, and many more.

Asiahn will also be playing the title character in the upcoming Netflix animated series, Karma’s World, created by Ludacris. The show tells the story of a girl finding her voice and using it to change the world. Sounds like the ideal role for this 3x-Grammy-nominated talent who continues her steady rise, which includes being named Pandora’s Artist to Watch 2021, participating in Live Nation’s Black History Month, and Tidal Sessions performances.

Celebrity-Designed Bag Auction for Chema Vision Children’s Center

Big Hearted Celebrities Act Fast to Help Children from Kibera Slum Go to School

Naomi Campbell, Halle Berry, Lenny Kravitz, Zoe Kravitz, Usher, Lionel Richie, Eddie Murphy, Evan Ross, Maggie Q, Raquel Bitton, Chrome Hearts and more come together using art and fashion so that students at Kibera’s Chema Vision Children’s Center can receive a quality education and a daily meal.

LA’s art and luxury fashion retailer to the stars Church Boutique and the eco-fashion house Ministry of Tomorrow (MOT) have teamed up with Christie’s and their charity auction partner Charitybuzz to produce “Art for Education”– the inaugural celebrity art auction fundraiser to benefit the Chema Vision Children’s Center (Chema) in Nairobi, Kenya.

The Chema School is situated in the midst of Kibera, Africa’s largest urban slum. The Chema School was established to provide quality education for some of Kibera’s most vulnerable children. Many of the students are orphans or children of single parents without income to pay for school fees.

Just before the pandemic, Chema was forced to relocate because the school structure was not up to code.  MOT’s vegan bag production facility is located near the school and Julian Prolman, president of MOT heard about the school’s dilemma. Through an initial fundraiser orchestrated by MOT, Chema was able to relocate to a safe building. However, Chema is currently lacking much needed funds to pay its teachers and cover its operational expenses that includes a daily meal for the students.

When Church Boutique’s founders Rodney Burns and David Malvaney learned about the urgent need at Chema from their supply partner MOT, whose branded bags are featured at The Church Boutique, they quickly reached out to their celebrity friends to request their support. Celebrities will be painting their artistic expressions on MOT’s new organic canvas tote bags that will be auctioned online through Christie’s auction partner, Charitybuzz, starting June 1, 2021 with the final bid accepted on June 16.

Prior to the auction launch, the bags will be on display from May 19– 26 at Church Boutique in Hollywood, CA, and then brought to New York where the bags will be on display at Christie’s during the auction.

Without hesitation, Rodney and David’s luminary friends offered to help including Naomi Campbell, Halle Berry, Lenny Kravitz, Zoe Kravitz, Usher, Lionel Richie, Eddie Murphy, Maggie Q, Evan Ross and Raquel Bitton, with more mega stars soon to be announced. In addition, Laurie Lynn Stark, the creator of the international jewelry and clothing brand Chrome Hearts, has joined in to create her own unique MOT tote.

“We believe that luxury is a privilege that comes with the responsibility to care for others in need and therefore we are thrilled to collaborate with MOT to do what we can to make a difference in the lives of children born into challenging circumstances” said Rodney Burns.

The opening minimum bid for each one-of-a-kind celebrity designed bag will begin at $1,000.

All proceeds from the auction will be donated to Chema to help fund the schools operating budget with a goal to raise $100k.

“Chema is a Swahili word meaning something good, and that is what we are trying to do with Art for Education” said Julian Prolman.

Happy Belated follows shortly after Trap Beckham’s scorching hot summer mixtape, Evil Emoji, which has already helped to legitimatize his growing presence in the industry. His musical talents have also spawned successful bangers, such as the wildly popular “Birthday Bitch,” which has garnered over 30 million streams and has become a major favorite among celebrities, such as LeBron James, Kylie Jenner, Angela Simmons, Leslie JonesZendaya, and famed actress Halle Berry. The breakout hit and millennial birthday anthem was also featured in Season 1 Episode 8 of the critically acclaimed HBO Series Insecure.

Trap Beckham looks to carry his momentum into full-blown superstardom. The arrival of his debut EP, Life Is Lit [Def Jam Records], includes singles “Backwoods,” “Cold,” and club phenomenon, “Lil Booties Matter,” which stars Cardi B’s younger sister and social media personality, Henessy Carolina, in the official music video. Trap Beckham’s musical style of lively, upbeat instrumentation, catchy lyrics, and the ability to create dancefloor hits at will is reminiscent of southern hip-hop legend Uncle Luke and has helped him attain wide success, catching the attention of major labels and eventually landing him a deal with Def Jam Recordings. This year, Trap Beckham’s independent hustle led him to join forces with Stevie Stacks Entertainment and EMPIRE to release a series of new and exciting music for fans to get up and dance to. With the arrival of Happy Belated, Trap Beckham continues to break through to the masses with an original sound and style that’s undeniably sensational. Not to mention, the young rapper has already been featured in VIBEXXLHotNewHipHop, and more!
