Gen-Z Fashion

The Essence for Y2K Fashion

By Andrea Esteban

Let’s face it : Old-fashioned ‘90s are back again — and yes, that involves all of those Y2K fashion trends you’ve probably hidden in the back of your wardrobe. Today, I’ll share all you need to know about Y2K fashion trends, and how Y2K fashion icons can inspire you to dress like a Gen-Z nowadays.

Here are my top tips to what is fashionable at the moment:

  • Where did the Y2K fashion trend come from?

Y2K fashion boomed across the mid-late 1990s and early 2000s. It doesn’t only refer to fashion, but it also refers to the technology and computer bug that people thought would happen on New Year’s day in 2000.

Y2K culture was marked by luxurious consumerism. Gen-Z were always trying to look for the most expensive monograms and designer brands including on clothing, accessories or perfumes that reflected the idea of ‘being contemporary’. Brands like Channel, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Dior were the most coveted.

We can’t forget that Y2K Culture was also shaped by streetwear trends including: designers’ logos, bling, D-rings, exposed zippers, belts, straps in line with the idea of the up to date technology.

  • What is Y2K Fashion?

Aesthetics and trends typically worn between the late ‘90s and the year 2000. What are the first items that come to your mind when you think about those years? Of course you can’t help remembering the crop tops, the velour tracksuits, the camis, the sparkly shoes or the low-rise jeans, all in the shiny black tone and reflective metallic color palette.

Casual clothing and leisurewear were also big fashion trends of the early 2000s. Denim became a significant staple for Gen-Z, going beyond skirts to jeans, hats and jackets. If you want to design a casual Y2K style , keep in mind that the denim staple is worn with all kinds of clothes including hoodies, crop tops & off the shoulder tops, ribbed sweaters with trainers, platform sandals, sneakers or boots.

  • How Can you get the Y2K Look nowadays? Get inspired!

Many of Y2K fashion inspiration can be taken from the pop culture icons of our early childhood involving celebrities, films and even video clips. Bratz Dolls, Mean Girls, Uptown Girls and Clueless are great fashion examples of inspiration for the Y2K appearance since these main characters loved over-dressing, with eye-catching colors.

One  of the essential features of Y2K fashion were accessories. Think of several of the typical staples from your wardrobe. Pieces like tiny sunglasses, mini-bags, bandanas or scrunchies clips are tendences now. Also, one key feature were rhinestones which are used as decorations for accessories like chokers, belts or hats

Finally, early ’00s makeup tendencies walked by ‘Euphoria’ smokey eyes, highlighting, colored eyeliner, glittery eyeshadow, false eyelashes, glossy lips, skinny brows and matte foundations. There’s no disagreeing that our current looks have been deeply induced by ’00s beauty icons like Tyra Banks, Paris Hilton, Laura Harrier, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Halle Berry. For you to get some inspiration when doing your make-up, I have gathered together the 5 most powerful and influential makeup trends worn by celebrities of the early 2000s in events like MTV Awards, Grammys, Brit Awards or even at the Oscars.

It’s Raining Men – A Promising Young Woman Edition

DeathbyRomy’s take on “It’s Raining Men” – the iconic No. 1 dance anthem originally released by The Weather Girls in 1982 – is out today. Listen HERE. Paul Jabara and Paul Shaffer wrote the song, which was nominated for a  GRAMMY®. “It’s Raining Men” is one of two songs that DeathbyRomy recorded exclusively for the Promising Young Woman: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. Variety has already predicted an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song for “Come and Play with Me,” the Los Angeles-based artist’s other contribution to the soundtrack. Twenty-year-old singer/songwriter DeathbyRomy pours both pain and euphoria into her catchy yet dark music, pitting electronic melodies and propulsive beats against hypnotic vocals and deeply personal lyrics. She made her Capitol Records debut last fall with the EP Love u – to Death.

Focus Features will release the Sundance hit Promising Young Woman on Christmas Day, Friday, December 25, 2020 in theaters domestically. IndieWire noted, “The film is filled with inspired soundtrack choices – a strings-heavy take on Britney Spears’ ‘Toxic’ teases before it reveals itself at the perfect moment, and an amusing use of an ‘It’s Raining Men’ cover sells Fennell’s pitch-black sense of humor early on.” Idolator said, “As for the soundtrack, there’s so much to love.”

Those who pre-order the 18-track collection in digital format will instantly receive “It’s Raining Men” plus Donna Missal’s interpretation of Cigarettes After Sex’s 2012 breakthrough single,  “Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby,” and Cyn’s “Drinks.”

Cyn’s original song “Drinks” has amassed over 20 million global streams. Billie Eilish added it to her Apple Music radio show, “me & dad radio.” Naming “Drinks” a “Song You Need To Know,” Rolling Stone hailed it as “insanely catchy.” The Mixed Drinks Collection” features the stripped version of “Drinks” and remixes from quartet of renowned producers, all female – MNDR, NERVO, Uffie, and Ladyhawke. uDiscoverMusic said, “[Donna Missal’s] silky vocals stand out against the moody, synth-driven production [on ‘Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby’].”

The film’s director and writer, Emerald Fennell, also served as Executive Soundtrack Producer, teaming up with music supervisor Sue Jacobs and Capitol Records to create what The Daily Beast describes as “a pop music soundtrack that could only be described as glorious.” Vice observed, “[Promising Young Woman] expertly uses femme pop songs to underscore its critically acclaimed twisted tale of trauma and revenge.” Billboard praised Anthony Willis’ “chilling orchestral arrangement of ‘Toxic,’” which can be heard in the film’s new trailer. View HERE.

The soundtrack also features previously unreleased tracks from Muna and Blessus plus Carmen DeLeon’s cover of the Gerry Goffin-Carole King penned “He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss”). Charli XCX’s “Boys,” Paris Hilton’s “Stars Are Blind,” Sky Ferreira’s “Downhill Lullaby” and Juice Newton’s “Angel of the Morning” are among the previously released tracks that Fennell employs to subvert the audience’s expectations over the course of the film. Other featured artists include Maya B and Lily & Madeleine.

Synopsis

From visionary director Emerald Fennell (Killing Eve) comes a delicious new take on revenge. Everyone said Cassie (Carey Mulligan) was a promising young woman… until a mysterious event abruptly derailed her future.  But nothing in Cassie’s life is what it appears to be: she’s wickedly smart, tantalizingly cunning, and she’s living a secret double life by night.  Now, an unexpected encounter is about to give Cassie a chance to right the wrongs of the past in this thrilling and wildly entertaining story.

Premiering to huge acclaim in Sundance earlier this year, PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN is directed and written by Emerald Fennell (Killing Eve) and stars Academy Award®-nominee Carey Mulligan and Bo Burnham along with an ensemble cast that includes Laverne Cox, Alison Brie, Connie Britton, Jennifer Coolidge, Max Greenfield, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Chris Lowell, Sam Richardson, Molly Shannon, and Clancy Brown.  Fennell produced along with Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, and Josey McNamara for LuckyChap Entertainment and Ben Browning and Ashley Fox for FilmNation Entertainment.

About ONCH:

Los Angeles-based Onch is the creative force behind the “ONCH” brand (previously known as Onch Movement), designing ‘wearable art’ for a discerning VIP client list that includes Kate Moss, Kim Kardashian, and Nicki Minaj, who famously rocked her Onch Rainbow Ice Cream Cone Necklace to accept the VMA for Best Rapper of the Year, and introduced the Pink Fried Chicken Wing Necklace at the iHeart Radio concert.

Onch’s career originally kicked off back when supermodel Moss was spotted out and about wearing his Bloody Razor Blade Necklace in L.A., before the designer was even old enough to buy booze legally. Following that illustrious intro, the fresh-faced fashion phenomenon was asked to provide the accessories for Heatherette’s LA Fashion Week show. He subsequently launched his long-term relationship with cult favorite Hello Kitty, which culminated in his recent role as designer for the brand’s first collection at Forever21, The Hello Kitty Forever jewelry collection. Hasbro, the global play and entertainment company, has also enlisted the edgy designer to bring some of their most beloved brands to life, choosing him for their very first jewelry collaborations for Mr. Potato Head and My Little Pony, not to mention asking Onch to create a 30 inch, not-so ‘Little Pony,’ currently touring the world at different toy conventions.

In Fall of 2016, Ford Motor Company asked ONCH to design a tiny home, dubbed a “Fungalow,” to help promote the launch of their new Ford Ecosport. In the Spring/Summer of 2019, six pieces featuring ONCH designs were on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY) for the exhibition CAMP: Notes on fashion.

New Release by Gabi Demartino

From recently making headlines by appearing in Ariana Grande’s viral “Thank U, Next” video to being a bonafide influencer with over 13.2M combined followers, Gabi Demartino will release her most personal song yet in time for Valentine’s Day. Her new single  Cold Room releasing February 14th, 2019, will allow her massive fan base to see her in a completely different light.

Gabi Speaking About the Meaning of “Cold Room”

“Cold Room” is a song I wrote 3 years ago while I was forming unfamiliar feelings for a friend. I knew it was more than a friend but never wanted to confront the situation because I was afraid the feelings weren’t mutual. I  never wanted to cross the line and ruin the friendship. I decided to release this song now, because it came on shuffle in my car while driving through a blizzard on the east coast. It is the most relatable, confident, upbeat love ballad that I have ever written and thought maybe it could help a few relationships blossom this Valentine’s Day. I want this track to help people in similar situations. Hopefully this song can send shivers down some spines and chill some veins. Pun- intended!

FUN FACTS

  • Gabi played a cheerleader who punches herself in the face because Arianna told her to, a spoof of the beloved teen comedy “Mean Girls,” in the “Thank U, Next” video that broke YouTube’s 24 hour record
  • Gabi has often been called an Arianna Grande look alike, something she embraces in several of her vlogs.
