Apple Music 1 host Nadeska Alexis speaks on their Apple Music Up Next artist Tems’ career and artistry.

Apple Music 1 Host, Nadeska: “Tems once told me that ‘being yourself actually takes more courage than people would imagine.’ In her career that has meant ignoring opinions and pressure to compromise her music, while constantly defying expectations. Her debut EP was raw and addictive, leaving fans hungry for her next release. And no matter how her songwriting evolves, her unique and captivating vocal tone will bring her the spotlight on any original or feature record she touches.”

Tems has been having a standout year since releasing her last EP For Broken Ears. She’s a singer/songwriter/self-taught producer that writes, arranges and produces her music with a genre-blending sound that fuses R&B with soul, reggae and more in her own unique way. Recently, Tems was featured on the standout track “Fountains” on Drake’s latest album Certified Lover Boy and is featured on “the song of the summer” “Essence” with Afrobeats star Wizkid, which recently released a version featuring Justin Bieber. The original version just hit #1 at Urban Radio and #1 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart this week. She’s also worked with various artists such as Khalid, Disclosure, Davido and more. Beyond music, Tems is a gifted clothing designer who has created some of the outfits she will be wearing on her forthcoming U.S. tour.

LISTEN / WATCH HERE

Simon Say was produced by multi-Grammy Award winning and Producer of the Year nominated producers/songwriters The Stereotypes (Bruno Mars, Cardi B., Justin Bieber) who also co-wrote the song with Destiny Rogers, Flo Milli and Grammy nominated singer/songwriter Ant Clemons. On Simon Say, Destiny offers up a gorgeously understated anthem of empowerment. One of the main messages I want to put out in my songs is the idea of being an independent woman and a boss bitch. ‘Simon Say’ is about knowing what you’re capable of, and never letting anyone hold you down says Destiny.

Simon Say follows Destiny’s latest tracks What I Like, which was featured in Destiny’s Jordan Brand campaign, titled Delta of Destiny for the release of the Jordan Delta 2 shoe, and West Like featuring Kalan.FrFr on which Destiny pays loving homage to her West Coast and Latin roots.

Check out her live performance video for What I Like HERE and the official video for West Like HERE , plus a live performance video HERE.

Since first breaking through with her boldly confident but carefree single Tomboy, which has generated over 45 million views on YouTube (Watch HERE) and most recently covered by K-Pop super group Black Pink’s Lisa through a dance cover (Watch HERE) that has generated over 70 million views,  Destiny Rogers has staked her claim as an artist to watch. Growing up in the Northern California town of Lodi, the 21-year-old multi-faceted musician taught herself to play guitar at age 10 and soon started writing and self-producing her own songs. Soon after the 2019 premiere of Tomboy, a track that recently hit #12 on Spotify’s Global Viral 50, Destiny’s spectacular rise has included touring the world and writing for heavy hitters such as Alicia Keys, Khelani and G-Eazy, all while discovering a new sound that transcends genres to irresistible effect.

Check out her Genius Verified piece HERE which explores her debut Tomboy.

Destiny Rogers is currently in the studio working on new material.  Prior to West Like featuring Kalan.FrFr, Destiny released a reworking of Tomboy feat. Coi Leray, and linked up with Coi for a special TikTok to the song which was reposted on Instagram and praised by Kim Kardashian West.  In addition, K-Pop superstar B.I released his global single, Got It Like That featuring Destiny Rogers with Tyla Yaweh which debuted at #1 on Spotify’s K-Pop X-Overs chart and has generated over 4 million views on YouTube (Watch HERE).

PROTOJE In Search Of Lost Time album cover from Tiffany Mea - With Love PR, Sarah Weinstein Dennison - RCA Records Publicity for use by 360 Magazine

PROTOJE DROPS NEW VIDEO – SELF DEFENSE

One of today’s most influential reggae artists, Protoje, tells a tale of retribution in his brand new video for “Self Defense,” the single from his latest album In Search of Lost Time (In.Digg.Nation Collective/Six Course Music/RCA Records). The Jamaican lyricist addresses distrust in his country’s government and takes a vigilante approach to control the bad-minded people running the streets. The visual, directed by Rebecca Williams, shows a group of women taking matters into their own hands to expose a man of his horrific crime.

“This is one of my favorite songs from the album and I decided to do a video for it because I feel like I wanted it to be almost like a declaration or call to attention regarding how we treat our women, especially as men. I wanted the story to be told from a woman’s perspective – and that’s how I linked up with the director, Rebecca. She’s an awesome storyteller & I think she did a great job with this video,” Protoje states.

On the track, Protoje talks about the hypocrisies of a patriarchal system and how it supports domestic violence and abuse. “Me hear some man a say them rather rape than turn a gay. As if dem deh ting deh related in any way. You nuh see say a some sicko them mentality. The patriarchy propagate all of them fallacy. Even in the church the violation prevalent Jehovah, you nuh witness, tell me that no relevant. Dem deh business cyaa exist inna we regiment. A self-defense and we no hesitant.”

Protoje is no stranger calling out misogyny and has made a concerted effort to help shift that paradigm. Within his own industry, he has signed and supported an all-female roster of Jamaican artists including Sevana, Lila Iké and Jaz Elise through his label and artist management company In.Digg.Nation Collective to represent the full spectrum of talent that his island has to offer.

Protoje’s fifth studio album In Search of Lost Time stays in rotation since its release on August 28, 2020. He colored outside the lines for a cinematic, ethereal, multi-genre LP and executive produced the entire project and co-produced five out of the thirteen original tracks. Now the vinyl edition to In Search of Lost Time is available for pre-order with shipments expected in September.

The musical prodigy, along with a collective of fellow artists, began getting mainstream attention for their addictive melodies and conscious lyrical messages in a movement dubbed the “reggae revival.” Publications such as VOGUERolling StoneThe FADER, and PAPER have declared him one of the brightest talents out of Jamaica. His catalog consists of the following studio albums: Seven Year Itch (2011), The 8 Year Affair (2013), Ancient Future (2015) and A Matter Of Time (2018) and In Search Of Lost Time (2020). As a producer, he receives a co-credit for Rock & Groove Riddim (2019). He has toured with Ms. Lauryn Hill and appeared on major festivals including Coachella (US), Glastonbury (UK), Afropunk (US), Reading & Leeds (UK), Sole DXB (Dubai) and Lollapalooza (Chile), reaching audiences far and wide with his genre-fusing sound. Under the RCA deal, Protoje brokered individual album deals for himself as well as his rising female artists Lila Iké, Sevana and Jaz Elise. He has received praise from the likes of NYLON and Uproxx for In.Digg.Nation Collective’s forward-thinking sound. James Vincent McMorrow × Paradise

James Vincent McMorrow shares the music video for Paradise from his upcoming album, Grapefruit Season, to be released on September 17.

“McMorrow has a soul voice to cherish” – Guardian

“The ever-shifting Irish singer-songwriter…it works” – Sunday Times, Hottest Tracks

“A deft collaboration, with James pushing his music onto a different realm, whilst maintaining that recognizable emotional pull” – CLASH

“Lyrically raw and immensely quotable” – The Forty Five

James Vincent McMorrow shares the video for new single Paradise, which is available now via Sony Music UK/RCA Records. Paradise is the latest taste of James’ much-anticipated new album Grapefruit Season – which also features teaser singles Headlights, Gone, and I Should Go (with Kenny Beats) – and is now set for release on September 17.

Produced by James alongside Paul Epworth and Lil Silva, Paradise is about pretending everything is fine when, beneath the surface, it really isn’t. Initially struggling to find its visual concept, the Paradise video started as an off-hand remark (“why don’t I just dig out my rollerblades and film myself learning to skate again in the park behind my house?”) but now feels like the perfect fit to the track’s uplifting, feel-good but melancholic center.

Paradise further previews Grapefruit Season, James Vincent McMorrow’s upcoming, fifth studio album – and one in which the artist, producer, and songwriter pushes himself (and his sound) in all new ways. The record was recorded between London, Los Angeles, and Dublin, largely before the pandemic struck. It embraces the timeless yet timely fact that life is chaos; the idea of growing up, but as Paradise suggests, still feeling none the wiser. Each song is held together by McMorrow’s instantly-identifiable voice, an untethered musical imagination, and (from dancehall to soul, country to R&B) purposefully little else in its pursuit of fear-free pop music. Even the title, Grapefruit Season, seems to signpost doing simply what you want, rather than what you are supposed to do – it was inspired by James watching his mum eat grapefruit as a kid, and the idea that what’s good for you may not actually be pleasurable.

Throughout the emotional highs and lows of Grapefruit Season, you are reminded of the risks James Vincent McMorrow has taken since the singer-songwriter roots of debut album Early In The Morning (which turned ten in 2020); but also that those same instincts – to follow inspiration wherever it leads, and to be as brutally honest possible – remain a refreshing constant. Whilst there may always be trouble in Paradise, what’s emerged is James Vincent McMorrow’s most essential album to date.

James also made headlines recently playing the first concert in Ireland with a live audience since the beginning of the pandemic (tickets sold out in just 30 seconds). With festivals including Latitude and Isle of Wight confirmed to follow this summer, McMorrow’s UK and European tour for early 2022 includes a London date at Kentish Town Forum on February 21 and two homecoming shows at Dublin’s Olympia Theatre on April 19-20.

GoldLink – HARAM!

Today, GoldLink, one of the most innovative artists in hip-hop, releases his third studio album, HARAM!, via Squaaash Club/RCA Records. Click here to listen.

Containing 15 tracks with features by Flo MilliNLE ChoppaSantigoldBibi BourellyRich The Kid, emerging international act Fire! and more, HARAM! represents the destruction and rebuilding of a new GoldLink, yet stays true to his lyrical prowess. Joe Perez (Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Pusha T) helmed the creative direction for the album.

Continuing to redefine what a “rap star” is meant to be, HARAM! is GoldLink’s most personal, genius, adventurous and riskiest piece of work to date. Filled with unfiltered braggadocios raps, challenging flows – yet feels more specific, like a biopic – the album is one that poses questions rather than give answers. The metaphoric use of the harsh, gritty telephone effect against his iconic cadence signifies that GoldLink is purposefully imperfect; he doesn’t want to be perfect. With HARAM!, GoldLink’s quest is to challenge the idea of rap titles in art in his pursuit to becoming a musical deity.

This Saturday (6/19), GoldLink will be performing during Luminosity Gaming’s “Luminosity Live” event, presented by F9. Catch him on Twitch at 10pm EST on the Luminosity Twitch Channel.

HARAM! Track list:

About GoldLink:

Where the intersections of the DMV (DC, Maryland and Virginia) collide, GoldLink is a direct product. Washington, D.C., and the broader DMV area, have long been treated like a musical Rubik’s cube. There are bursting, technicolor patches of musical brilliance, but the component parts never line up in a way that made sense to those on the outside. GoldLink is not interested in spelling out all the nuances of his hometown; what he does aim to do is synthesize his environment’s litany of influences and inspirations into something unique, singular, and all together his own.

With his RIAA-certified Gold debut studio album At What Cost (Squaaash Club/RCA) – helmed by the monstrous single “Crew” – released in March 2017, he’s done just that. By merging the sensibilities of go-go with the African diaspora, he’s done what hip-hop has done from its inception: repurpose what’s available into something magical.

The success of At What Cost and 4x Platinum single “Crew” saw GoldLink achieve a number of career firsts — from his Grammy nomination for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration to the iHeartMedia Music Awards nomination for Best New Hip-Hop Artist to his BET Awards nomination for Best New Artist. Adding to his accomplishments was a Grammy Nomination for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration the following year with “Like I Do” with Christina Aguilera.

Following up in 2019 with Diaspora, GoldLink continued to show his sonic range and influences as shown on singles “Zulu Screams” ft. Maleek Berry & Bibi Bourelly, and “Joke Ting” ft. Ari Pensmith. The album was recognized by Pitchfork as “the best music of his career,” and Highsnobiety declared “GoldLink can conceive of and execute his ideas better than most anyone in hip-hop today.” Diaspora made several Best Albums of The Year lists including Complex, UpRoxx, Hot New Hip Hop and more, while “Zulu Screams” made The New York Times “54 Best Songs of 2019” list, calling it “a supremely catchy international collaboration.”

Mariah the Scientist x 2 You

Mariah the Scientist drops new track and video, 2 You, from her upcoming project, RY RY WORLD coming this summer.

Today, Atlanta-based R&B singer/songwriter Mariah the Scientist shares a new track and video 2 You via RCA Records. Marking her first release of 2021, the track’s trippy, bouncy beat flows seamlessly with Mariah’s clear, sleek vocals. The video transports you to space, displaying various scenes of galaxies and stars, while Mariah pours her feelings out through her vulnerable lyrics. “2 You” will be on her forthcoming project RY RY WORLD coming this summer, which is now available for pre-order.

RY RY WORLD is her first project release since her 2019 major label debut Master – a wry and profoundly personal collection of self-reflective ballads layered with sparse, cinematic instrumentals, which has garnered over 31 million streams worldwide and counting. Last year, Mariah released two tracks gearing up for her return – Always n Forever feat. Lil Baby, an iconic love song about loyalty and commitment, and RIP,  an ethereal slow-drip ballad about finding a way to end the pain of never feeling enough for someone else.

Pitchfork proclaims Mariah a “major new voice in R&B.” She’s an artist who embodies modern R&B through her fearlessness and unapologetic femininity while her songwriting is rooted in vulnerability and honesty. These variables combined into each song is what makes Mariah the Scientist relatable to anyone who listens to her music.

Mariah the Scientist is officially back and ready for a game-changing return. Her new releases are bound to be as iconic and powerful as her previous tracks.

JAZ ELISE “BREATHE” Cover from RCA Records Publicity for use by 360 Magazine

JAZ ELISE – BREATHE

Today, the Jamaican songstress Jaz Elise reveals visualizer for “Breathe,” the personal closer from her debut EP The Golden Hour (In.Digg.Nation Collective/Six Course Music/RCA Records). Growing up in Harbour View, a small coastal community of Kingston, the singer strolls down the shoreline to get some peace of mind over soft breezy jazz rhythms produced by  J.L.L. x iotosh. “Breathe” is a stripped-down reveal of how she deals with the stresses of life. “It’s a battlefield of my mind, but when it gets too heavy, I just need to breathe,” she sings.

Watch here.

“I was going through a very hard time some months back when I wrote this song. Breathe was a message to myself. It’s literally me singing to myself during a state of panic. I had internal feelings I couldn’t explain but know I needed to work through for my own mental health. This is a message to ourselves to just take it one step at a time and just breathe. Whatever your release is, find it and do it. For me it was music, reading, meditation and time with self. I hope this song soothes any troubled heart and soul and calms the mind of anyone suffering mentally. Remember to breathe. We can get through this,”  the singer explains.
