HUBA-HUBA CAMBODIA

By: Alexandria Baiz × Vaughn Lowery

Cameron Michael Parkes was born in Vancouver, Canada (in British Columbia). He graduated from the University of Calgary, majoring in chemical engineering with a minor in petroleum. While working at a consulting firm, the oil prices dropped and he used his severance package to travel the world.

Throughout his two year journey in Southeast Asia, he found himself at Koh Rong Samloem – a small island just off the coast of Sihanoukville, Cambodia. Two main places to stay are Saracen Bay (dense more modern filled with tourists) or Mpei Bay (rustic village area with tons of locals). After a few weeks in both places, Cameron decides to trench through the hot and sticky jungle (with snakes, wild monkeys and insects) to the most desolate yet serene part of the island, Sunset Beach. He quickly becomes acquainted with paradise and decides to plant his feet at Huba-Huba where he enjoys perfect sunsets with unobstructed sea views.

After a brief trip to Sri Lanka, he returns to Huba-Huba to discover that the owner’s husband had passed in a tragic motorcycle accident. The widow offered to sell and Cameron decided to purchase. Looking back he says, “I like the beach-jungle vibe which isn’t perfect. I love this spot. Right on the beach, beautiful bay, monkeys come around, geckos.”

Huba-Huba Cambodia

Situated at the end of the beach, it contains 4 bungalows, 1 family bungalow, 4 private double rooms and 1 dorm – 8 beds and 3 tents. Their kitchen is armed with one of the best cooks on the entire island. Their “BBQ Nights” serve up sensational samplers of pork ribs, tofu, prawns and chicken. Polite waitstaff, heavy handed mixologists and free painting station where you can repurpose instruments as well as pieces of wood to build a sculpture from scratch. Snorkeling gear is available for rental.

Sleeping Trees owned by Yves Chalot

Yves (a notable bartender from Brittany) came to Sunset Beach as a dive instructor and fell in love. One day after speaking with his bosses, he discovers a beachfront property for rent. Then he invites his brother (a carpenter) and they decided to erect ‘Sleeping Trees.’ The name derived from only having tree tents and the idea of ‘sleep in’ trees arose. The vacation area has two newly renovated bungalows, four tipis and four tree tents. Each space can accommodate up to two people. In addition, there’s a 4-room dorm which can host eight. At the present moment, both owners want to focus on better gardening and overall aesthetics of the property. Best attributes are their crepes, homemade rum shots and Reggae Night on Saturdays.

Robinson Bungalows

Sebastian Straub, former social worker in Switzerland, has now owned the property for 5 years alongside of his wife Julia. Their location is pet-friendly and includes 7 bungalows and 7 tipis. Each bungalow is constructed from wood with straw rooves perfect for a cozy and tropical stay. Their reimaginged family bungalow or ‘Cozy Kikki Lu’ is an ideal choice for guests seeking modern-like amenities. Tents make for a perfect glamping experience since they’re about thirty feet from the ocean. We enjoyed soaking up the sun in one of the 20 hammocks on the premises. Take advantage of the full bar and $1 beers during happy hour. The onsite restaurant takes advantage of seasonal local produce and fresh catches when possible. Our favorite menu items were the English breakfast, hearty fruit bowls, red snapper and barbecued pork & chicken skewer. You may enjoy meals upstairs (two-stories high) in an outdoor covered dining patio and/or at the beach bar. Every morning, a taxi boat for guests cost $10 to go to the city and is easily accessible.

Sunboo Beach Bungalows

Karlo and Parisa Zahipour Moarefi both came from Austria, borrowed money from friends and invested in Sunboo. There are 6 Bungalows and a dorm with 8 beds. The beach or garden bungalows have ceiling fans and newly renovated bathrooms and sinks. With a strong Italian influence, everyday dining is delightful. For breakfast they make french toast, pancakes, crispy bacon and homemade baguettes. For lunch fresh gnocchi, burgers and triple fried french fries. The dinner menu is westernized with our favorite thin crust pizza. And of course the Sunboo beach bar is the party area where we sip and socialize. One of the only establishments which serve wine on Sunset Beach.

Sunset Adventures Dive Shop

They offer a full array of outdoor activities on the island with two locations – Saracen Bay and Sunset Beach. We took their half-day diving class (for all levels) and their master instructors were extremely attentive. The rock climbing experience offers amazing views of the sea. Kayaking trips are a must-try with a guide to discover the wonderful island and underwater world. The most intriguing activity on the island is the nighttime plankton tour which allows one to witness and capture their bioluminescence.

Lazy Beach Resort

A private tropical hideaway on Koh Rong Samloem. The vacation area has 1 private beach, 22 bungalows and 1 guest house. The wooden bungalows all have two large double beds, en-suite bathrooms and a spacious balcony offering waters edge views of the warm tropical ocean. Paddle boarding is one of the most popular activities to do, but also board games, snorkeling and dive sites. The infamous bar is a must visit with the number one drink being the ‘Bahama Mama.’ All sorts of signature drinks like brown and white rum malibu, grenadine and juices. This private beach getaway is breathtaking.

Koh Rong Samloem Lighthouse

The most amazing experience on the island and also its highest point. We recommend you take a taxi boat to the drop-off or trail which leads up to the lighthouse. Rumored to have been an old military watch tower, the views are spectacular. Be prepared to climb at least 7 to 8 stories to the top. The smell inside the lighthouse is a tad overwhelming and rancid. Be willing to pay at least $1-3 USD for the private tour. That price does not include the taxi boat.

Kae Tempest × Kevin Abstract – More Pressure

British spoken word artist, rapper, poet, novelist, and playwright Kae Tempest revealed their new single “More Pressure” with Kevin Abstract. The song is from their upcoming album The Line Is a Curve set for release on April 8th via American Recordings/Republic Records. It is the fourth album from the Lewisham-based artist and has been produced by long-term collaborator Dan Carey alongside executive production by Rick Rubin.

The Line Is a Curve follows Tempest’s widely adored 2019 album The Book of Traps & Lessons, which received praise from the likes of NPR, The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Guardian, and many more, and saw Kae perform live on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night with Seth Meyers. Tempest and Abstract’s shared friend and collaborator Rick Rubin played The Book of Traps & Lessons in his studio, and they had reached out to Kae afterward to thank them for the inspiration, leading to the exciting collaboration on “More Pressure.” The Line Is A Curve also follows Tempest’s critically acclaimed 2021 play Paradise, which premiered at the National Theatre in London last year.

About The Album

After the experience of touring The Book of Traps & Lessons around the U.S., U.K., and Europe, Tempest realized that they wanted The Line Is a Curve to be a communicative record. The concept manifested itself both in the contributions of other artists—including the aforementioned Kevin Abstract, Lianne La Havas, Grian Chatten of Fontaines DC, ássia, and Confucius MC—and during the recording process, when Tempest decided to do three vocal takes in one day, to three different generations of people; “a man of 78 who I’d never met, a woman of 29, the poet Bridget Minamore, who is a good friend of mine, and then to three young fans of 12, 15, and 16 who had responded to a social media post.”

Featuring artwork shot by renowned photographer Wolfgang Tillmans (Frank Oceans’ blond), the album is best described by Tempest themselves:

“‘The Line Is a Curve’ is about letting go. Of shame, anxiety, isolation, and falling instead into surrender. Embracing the cyclical nature of time, growth, love. This “letting go” can hopefully be felt across the record. In the musicality, the instrumentation, the lyricism, the delivery, the cover art. In the way it ends where it begins and begins where it ends. I knew I wanted my face on the sleeve. Throughout the duration of my creative life, I have been hungry for the spotlight and desperately uncomfortable in it. For the last couple of records, I wanted to disappear completely from the album covers, the videos, the front-facing aspects of this industry. A lot of that was about my shame but I masked it behind a genuine desire for my work to speak for itself, without me up front, commodifying what felt so rare to me and sacred. I was, at times, annoyed that in order to put the work out, I had to put myself out. But this time around, I understand it differently. I want people to feel welcomed into this record, by me, the person who made it, and I have let go of some of my airier concerns. I feel more grounded in what I’m trying to do, who I am as an artist and as a person and what I have to offer. I feel less shame in my body because I am not hiding from the world anymore. I wanted to show my face, and I dreamed of it being Wolfgang Tillmans who took the portrait.”

About Kae Thompson

With four studio albums, a novel, their first work of non-fiction (On Connection), three plays, and five collections of poetry to their name, Kae Tempest has firmly established themselves as one of the most unique, thought-provoking, and critically acclaimed voices of their generation. With the release of The Line Is a Curve in 2022, that reputation is only set to grow exponentially.

Fire and Ice Opening at Soneva Fushi

Acclaimed Danish chef and restaurateur, Mads Refslund, has launched a new 12-month pop-up restaurant at Soneva Fushi, the award-winning luxury eco-resort in the Baa Atoll of the Maldives. Located at Fresh in the Garden, a treetop dining destination that overlooks the private island resort’s extensive organic gardens, the pop-up is based on Chef Refslund’s signature concept of “Fire” and “Ice.”

One of the original founders of Copenhagen’s vaunted Noma, named the world’s best restaurant five times over, Chef Refslund is an advocate for the New Nordic cuisine and a terroir-based kitchen. His cooking has also pioneered the principle of “bonding rawness,” whereby raw ingredients are combined together based on their intrinsic values and flavors, with the aim of seeking the highest expression nature can provide.

“I always find inspiration in nature, so to have the opportunity to cook among the treetops of Soneva Fushi is very inspiring,” says Chef Refslund. “The key focus of the pop-up concept at Fresh in the Garden is ‘Fire’ and ‘Ice’, showcasing our natural instinct for how to work with nature’s bounty. The menu is evenly split: in ‘Ice’ items are untouched by heat, allowing them to reveal their pure beauty that nature has provided in the contrasting ‘Fire,’ cooking over live flame is used to enhance the ingredients. Together, the two sides create harmony and balance.”

Chef Refslund’s menu at Fresh in the Garden celebrates nature’s purity, with a focus on vegetables and seafood indigenous to the region. “Ice” dishes include a tartare of sustainably caught Maldivian tuna with salted plum and hibiscus, and watermelon crudo, dragon fruit and red basil. In “Fire,” prawns are cooked in lemongrass with velvet tamarind, while garden egg is served with aromatic herbs and black truffle. For sharing, guests can try a whole fish, roasted in coconut husks, or the plant-based braised hearts of palm with white truffle and sunchokes. And for dessert, choices include: sour banana parfait with pine nut miso praline, pandan, and dragon fruit with kiwi and yogurt.

“We are delighted to welcome Chef Refslund to Soneva Fushi,” says Sonu Shivdasani, CEO and Co-founder of Soneva. “Soneva has a long history of collaborating with world-renowned chefs to offer an exceptional gastronomic experience to our guests, whether through pop-ups such as this or our ongoing Soneva Stars calendar of visiting chefs and other experts from around the world.”

Multi-platinum selling and chart-topping recording artist iann dior announces today his 2022 European headlining “iann dior: Better Things Tour.” Kicking off 22nd of January 2022 at The Olympia Theatre in Dublin, Ireland, the tour will hit 23 cities across Europe. Tickets go on sale this Friday, the 3rd of September. For more information and on sale times, please click HERE.

Rapper and singer iann dior will embark on the “Better Things Tour” following his biggest year to date in 2020. He earned a Billboard Hot 100 #1 for his feature on “Mood” with 24KGoldn, which spent 33 weeks inside the Top 10 and is now 4x Platinum. He is currently nominated for 2 MTV VMAs for Best Song and Best Collaboration for “Mood” with 24kGoldn. He has added to his accolades four RIAA-certified gold singles and collaborations with everyone from Travis Barker to Clean Bandit to Lil Baby. With all of these achievements under his belt, iann dior has become a genre-agnostic force to be reckoned with in pop music today. Most recently, he released his two-track bundle Still Here, which includes his second collaboration with Trippie Redd, “shots in the dark” that currently has over 30 million streams and video views worldwide. “shots in the dark” is the follow up to their 2019 collab, “gone girl.” Iann is currently on the road with Trippie Redd’s “Tripp at Knight” North American Tour this fall with Sofaygo.

About iann dior

Multi-platinum selling, chart topping, iann dior has become one of the industry’s fastest rising new artists. Puerto Rican-born, Corpus Christi-raised Michael Iann Olmo (also known as “iann dior”) found success with the first song he ever wrote. After uploading to SoundCloud, the song gained 10,000 plays in its first week and caught the ear of Internet Money founder Taz Taylor who invited the budding songwriter to work with him in LA. Shortly afterwards, iann dior inked a deal with Elliot Grainge’s label 10K Projects in April 2019 and released his project Industry Plant.

2020 was a breakout year for the burgeoning star with his feature on the Billboard Hot 100 #1 hit “Mood” with 24KGoldn, which is now certified 4x platinum and charted inside the Top 10 for 33 weeks, spending 8 consecutive weeks at #1. The duo performed the track on the American Music Awards, are currently nominated for 2 VMAS for Song of the Year and Best Collaboration, and have received additional nominations for 3 Billboard Music Awards and 1 iHeartRadio Music Award for their success with “Mood.” iann has released songs with acts like Lil Baby, Machine Gun Kelly, Travis Barker, Clean Bandit, Trippie Redd and more. Most recently he released new tracks “shots in the dark” ft. Trippie Redd and “don’t wanna believe” which have already amassed over 30 million streams and video views worldwide. As he prepares to release more new music in 2021, iann dior assures his fans this is only the beginning. “A number one album is up next,” he said, “I want to become the number one artist in the world, and I am fully determined and obsessed with being the greatest.”

James Vincent McMorrow × Paradise

James Vincent McMorrow shares the music video for Paradise from his upcoming album, Grapefruit Season, to be released on September 17.

“McMorrow has a soul voice to cherish” – Guardian

“The ever-shifting Irish singer-songwriter…it works” – Sunday Times, Hottest Tracks

“A deft collaboration, with James pushing his music onto a different realm, whilst maintaining that recognizable emotional pull” – CLASH

“Lyrically raw and immensely quotable” – The Forty Five

James Vincent McMorrow shares the video for new single Paradise, which is available now via Sony Music UK/RCA Records. Paradise is the latest taste of James’ much-anticipated new album Grapefruit Season – which also features teaser singles Headlights, Gone, and I Should Go (with Kenny Beats) – and is now set for release on September 17.

Produced by James alongside Paul Epworth and Lil Silva, Paradise is about pretending everything is fine when, beneath the surface, it really isn’t. Initially struggling to find its visual concept, the Paradise video started as an off-hand remark (“why don’t I just dig out my rollerblades and film myself learning to skate again in the park behind my house?”) but now feels like the perfect fit to the track’s uplifting, feel-good but melancholic center.

Paradise further previews Grapefruit Season, James Vincent McMorrow’s upcoming, fifth studio album – and one in which the artist, producer, and songwriter pushes himself (and his sound) in all new ways. The record was recorded between London, Los Angeles, and Dublin, largely before the pandemic struck. It embraces the timeless yet timely fact that life is chaos; the idea of growing up, but as Paradise suggests, still feeling none the wiser. Each song is held together by McMorrow’s instantly-identifiable voice, an untethered musical imagination, and (from dancehall to soul, country to R&B) purposefully little else in its pursuit of fear-free pop music. Even the title, Grapefruit Season, seems to signpost doing simply what you want, rather than what you are supposed to do – it was inspired by James watching his mum eat grapefruit as a kid, and the idea that what’s good for you may not actually be pleasurable.

Throughout the emotional highs and lows of Grapefruit Season, you are reminded of the risks James Vincent McMorrow has taken since the singer-songwriter roots of debut album Early In The Morning (which turned ten in 2020); but also that those same instincts – to follow inspiration wherever it leads, and to be as brutally honest possible – remain a refreshing constant. Whilst there may always be trouble in Paradise, what’s emerged is James Vincent McMorrow’s most essential album to date.

James also made headlines recently playing the first concert in Ireland with a live audience since the beginning of the pandemic (tickets sold out in just 30 seconds). With festivals including Latitude and Isle of Wight confirmed to follow this summer, McMorrow’s UK and European tour for early 2022 includes a London date at Kentish Town Forum on February 21 and two homecoming shows at Dublin’s Olympia Theatre on April 19-20.

TINLICKER & HELSLOOT’s New EP

TINLICKER & HELSLOOT SHARE SOARING PARADISE EP

Utrecht dance-floor dreamers Tinlicker return today with a new collaborative EP with Helsloot called Paradise. The set is Tinlicker’s first release since signing to Astralwerks, and it’s a worthy continuation of the airy, meditative club tracks that Micha Heyboer and Jordi van Achthoven have been making together for the better part of the last decade. Listen to Paradise HERE.

In August, Tinlicker and fellow Dutch DJ Helsloot shared the EP’s title track, featuring a swoon-worthy performance from R&B vocalist Saro, who soars above their cloudy house beats. The release is rounded out by another track called “Like,” a stormier effort that starts with some rumbling basswork before returning to the stratospheric realms the producers often inhabit together. It’s a more straightforward dance cut, in contrast to the feathery lightness of the title track’s R&B refractions. The EP also includes extended mixes of each song.

The EP marks Tinlickerߣs second team up with Helsloot following technicolor bliss bomb Éc;Because You Move Me,Éd; released in 2017 on Armada and still echoing from speakers all over. Paradise is also the latest offering in a particularly imaginative phase for Tinlicker. In 2019, they released This Is Not Our Universe on Anjunabeats, an album exploring house and techno’s spacious outer realms. In March of this year, they followed with a remix album, featuring reimaginings and reworks from Dosem, Deeparture, and Grum, among others.

Today, the duo is also sharing a “Likevisualizer, which features the EP’s stunning cover art spinning and pulsing in time with the trackߣs dizzy rhythms. A house in the middle of an empty field comes alive like a club in the twilight hours ߞ a reminder, perhaps, that you can find ecstasy in the midst of the everyday.

About Tinlicker: Tinlicker are the face of contemporary Dutch dance music. Utrecht-based duo Micha Heyboer and Jordi van Achthoven have been crafting their computerized soul together since 2013, and even during those early days they were no rookies. They honed their skills individually as part of the world-renowned drum ‘nߣ bass act Black Sun Empire (Heyboer) and as producer, songwriter, and music editor for many artists (Van Achthoven). New iann dior Music Video

21-year-old rapper iann dior released a new music video for his song “Prospect” on Tuesday. It can be seen here!

The song features Lil Baby and was featured on Spotify playlists like Rap Caviar, Get Turnt and New Music Friday, all helping to propel it to more than 41 million streams since its May release.

The gorgeously shot video is directed by Omar Jones and inspired by Chinese landscape, architecture and colors to tribute the obvious inspiration to the beat. According to the press release, dior’s plans to tour in Asia were cancelled because of the pandemic, so the music video was his next best choice to show love to his Chinese fans.

“Prospect” is just dior’s latest in a long line of hits in a short period of time. Growing up in Corpus Christi, he quickly learned he was a talented writer and decided to turn that talent into hip-hop music. His first song earned 10,000 streams and caught the attention of Taz Taylor, the founder of Internet Money.

He released “Cutthroat” in 2019 which racked up 13 million streams on SoundCloud. He then inked a deal with 10K Projects, with whom he released his first mixtape titled “nothing’s ever good enough.”

dior gives credit to J. Cole for inspiring him to make music.

“He showed me that I could use songs to tell my own story, just like he uses his songs to tell his story,” dior said.

“Prospect” can be found along with other hits like “Pretty Girls,” “Sick and Tired” and “Paradise” on his new album, “I’m Gone,” which was released in June.
