SAILOR JERRY SPICED RUM

SAILOR JERRY SPICED RUM PARTNERS WITH TEXAS ARMY VETERAN TO CREATE SAILOR JERRY IRONSIDES BBQ SAUCE

100% of profits from each bottle sold supports veterans

Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum is proud to continue its longstanding history of support for the U.S. military with the launch of Sailor Jerry Ironsides BBQ Sauce. Created in partnership with Texas-based, veteran-owned BBQ business Grill Your Ass Off, 100% of profits from each bottle sold will support veterans.

Sailor Jerry Ironsides BBQ Sauce is crafted with Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum to incorporate the bold character of the 92 proof spirit. The result is a smooth and smoky tomato-based sauce that brings the signature Sailor Jerry spice blend to the forefront, finishing with a kick of sweet heat.

Fifty percent of profits will go to the veteran-owned business Grill Your Ass Off, while the remaining 50% will benefit The Independence Fund, a 501c3 non-profit committed to restoring the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual independence of our nation’s veterans. The Independence Fund will use the donation to support Operation Resiliency, a program that reunites veterans who served together. The reunions are often conducted through retreats and promote a sense of community while teaching coping skills.

“We are longtime fans of Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum and were thrilled when they approached us to collaborate on a BBQ sauce,” said Jason Murff, CEO of Grill Your Ass Off. “We’re proud to have created a versatile sauce that highlights the distinct taste of Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum, and prouder yet to do it in a way that supports our veteran community. As a veteran-owned business, we make it a priority to give back to those who have served, and we value Sailor Jerry for sharing this commitment.”

Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum was created to honor Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins, a Navy vet who built his rep inking soldiers and sailors in WWII-era Honolulu, where he established his legendary tattoo parlor and himself as the undisputed father of American old-school tattooing. Sailor Jerry has a rich legacy of support for the military, having donated over $1 million to the USO and other military organizations throughout the brand’s history.

“Supporting the veteran community is a significant cause for our brand as we seek to honor the legacy of our namesake, Navy veteran Norman ‘Sailor Jerry’ Collins,” said Mary-Jade Hynes, Brand Manager, Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum. “It was important to us to work with a veteran-owned business to create this product, and we’re delighted to have come together with Jason Murff and his team at Grill Your Ass Off to support the critical work of The Independence Fund, and to make some damn good BBQ sauce.”

Crafted in the traditional Navy way by William Grant & Sons, Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum is bold and smooth, with hints of caramel and vanilla. Made in America from Caribbean Rum and blended with spices including ginger, cinnamon, clove and vanilla, Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum is an exceptionally smooth 92 proof spirit.

Sailor Jerry Ironsides BBQ Sauce launches on November 1 and is available for purchase for $12.99 at GrillYourAssOff.com and via the Sailor Jerry online store at sailorjerry.com/en/shop/.

Quest for Craft

Craftsmanship takes skill, ultimate craftsmanship requires heart. A family-owned business with 130-years of experience perfecting the craft of whisky-making, The Balvenie Single Malt Scotch Whisky is rooted in a spirit of innovation and deep curiosity to expose the intangible elements that make something exceptional. As part of their continued partnership and shared mission to uncover the beautiful convergence of craft and creativity, The Balvenie and 6-Time GRAMMY Award Winning musician, Academy Award-winning filmmaker, producer, DJ, director, culinary entrepreneur and New York Times best-selling author Questlove have returned with a second season of their award-winning digital series, Quest for Craft.

Quest for Craft explores the obsessive, never-ending journey to craft the extraordinary through conversations with compelling cultural creators that pour their hearts into their own craft. Now in its second season, the series continues to peel back the curtain through new perspectives, unveiling the uniquely human attributes and deep intrinsic values that elevate something from great to exceptional. With insight from some of the world’s most creative minds, the series uncovers the nuances integral to the creative process through their own pursuit of craft across music, dance, writing, comedy and the whisky-making process.

“The Balvenie is anchored in heart, and that’s exactly what drives this project, our guests and myself, personally. There’s no substitute for that kind of passion needed to drive the continual pursuit of the extraordinary,” said Questlove. “Coming back for season two of Quest for Craft, we dig in deeper and hone in on the elements that have inherent value and major impact on the creative process. From conversations with four of the greatest minds of our generation, who I’ve known and admired for years, I’ve been able to gain a completely new perspective on who they are as creators and apply their learnings to refine my own creative approach.”

In its second season, again filmed in the iconic Electric Lady Studios in New York City, Quest for Craft takes the viewer on an even deeper dive into the world of craftsmanship by analyzing creativity through the lens of chemistry, place, perfection and expression with guests:

  • Chapter 5Craft and Expression with Music Producer and Star-Studded Collaborator Mark Ronson – Questlove and Mark Ronson delve into the unique magic of cohesion with creative collaborators, and advice for creators to leave their own distinctive mark.
  • Chapter 6Craft and Perfection with History-Making Professional Ballet Dancer Misty Copeland – Questlove and American Ballet Theatre Principal Dancer Misty Copeland consider whether practice really does make perfect, her unconventional path to professional dance and how self-expression and defying expectations can allow you to attain your own ideal.
  • Chapter 7, Craft and Place with Author and New York City Guru Fran Lebowitz – Questlove and Fran Lebowitz explore the impact your environment can have on your craft, and the two go on a journey through New York… without even leaving Electric Lady Studios.
  • Chapter 8, Craft and Chemistry with Comedian and Master of Ensemble Kenan Thompson – Questlove and Kenan Thompson discuss his 20 years on SNL, “30 Rock University” and the remarkable experience of working as part of an ensemble.

“Craft and creativity are inextricably linked, and are at the core of our distillery’s past, present and future. As a family-owned company dating back to 1892, The Balvenie leads with a legacy of long-term innovation and a steadfast commitment to excellence made possible by our Five Rare Crafts, comprised of unmatched ingredients, processes and people,” said Greg Levine, Vice President, Marketing, Single Malt Scotch Whiskies USA. “In its second year, Quest for Craft builds on the tenants of craftsmanship explored in season one, and unveils even more truths behind modern creativity and inspiration. With deep knowledge of music, entertainment, culinary and literary fields, and having literally written the book on the subject of creativity with Creative Quest, we’re reminded how perfectly positioned Questlove is to help us unpack the uniquely human elements that elevate the great to the exceptional.”

In 2021, The Balvenie embarked on a new creative journey with the arrival of Quest for Craft: Season One, a disquisitive digital series hosted by Questlove. Over the four episodes featured in its inaugural season, The Balvenie and Questlove embark on thought provoking conversations around the creative processes, inspirations and aspirations of legendary GRAMMY Award-winning music producer Jimmy Jam, SNL comedian Michael Che, punk-rock icon Patti Smith, and prolific author Malcolm Gladwell. The series won the 2021 Shorty Award in the Industry: Wine, Beer & Spirits category and 2021 Brand Film Award in the Consumer Goods category.

About The Balvenie Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Nestled in the picturesque surroundings of Dufftown, Speyside, The Balvenie distillery has been handcrafting whisky for more than 125 years, notably the most handcrafted of single malts. With a team committed to ultimate craftsmanship, their dedicated characters pour their soul and obsession into every single bottle. This demonstrates that, whilst it takes skill to make something great, it takes true heart to make it extraordinary. And of course, Malt Master, David C. Stewart MBE presides over the all-important maturation process.

Founded in 1892 by William Grant, The Balvenie Single Malt Scotch Whisky is produced by William Grant & Sons Ltd, an award-winning independent family-owned distiller and today run by his direct descendants. The Immortal IPA – Elysian Brewing

Elysian Brewing recently unveiled a label refresh for one of its OG beers, which was first brewed over 25 years ago. As one of their longest standing beers, Immortal’s original label was inspired by Greek mythology, showcasing Zeus sitting defiantly on his throne as he harnesses heaven’s lightning into a vibrant scepter of power and fire.

Seeking to maintain a connection to the beer’s original roots, Elysian’s design team approached the Immortal refresh by looking at the original tagline ‘Power in Balance’ as a jumping-off point for new art. They had attempted to refresh the brand several times over the past few years, but nothing really clicked until this original narrative was introduced into a tarot framework – an idea that was first sparked last year.

To further build upon this framework, each of the designers were enrolled in a tarot class and the synchronicity helped to inform and illuminate this direction they’d ultimately charted. Individually, each designer created a tarot card that represents a different part of Immortality. Together all three cards tell an interconnected story, but individually represent a different part of Immortality:

  • Turtle + Lion: Balance / The Immortal Balance
  • Old Man: Wisdom / The Immortal Wisdom
  • Snakes: Power / The Immortal Power

Batch × Bottle

Nothing signifies a night out quite like the experience of a perfect cocktail made by an expert bartender surrounded by close friends. Yet, when entertaining at home, many hosts opt for wine or a basic spirit and mixer, because they are easier to make and serve – that is, until now. Beginning May 1, Batch & Bottle will be available nationwide to simplify the home cocktail experience with three simple steps: chill, pour & garnish.

Batch & Bottle, a range of four premium, pre-batched, ready-to-serve cocktails, features some of the world’s most beloved spirits brands, bringing bar-ready cocktails directly to your home, effortlessly elevating any hosting occasion. Created by the family-owned, independent spirits company William Grant & Sons, Batch & Bottle marks the parent company’s first major foray into the Ready-To-Drink (RTD) cocktail space.

Made with meticulous attention to detail, the Batch & Bottle offerings include the Monkey Shoulder Lazy Old Fashioned, the brainchild of Joe Petch, the Monkey Shoulder Global Ambassador; the Reyka Rhubarb Cosmopolitan, which leverages the Icelandic glacial vodka and unique ingredients to create a reimagined twist on the classic cosmopolitan; the Glenfiddich Scotch Manhattan, which includes the secret ‘Granny Gordon’s bitters’ recipe for a cocktail that cannot be replicated anywhere else in the world; and the Hendrick’s Gin Martini, created by Ms. Lesley Gracie, the Hendrick’s Master Distiller, in collaboration with five of the world’s best bars—Brujas, Nutmeg & Clove, Yaldy, Maybe Sammy, and Nauticus—to deliver a light, yet intriguingly complex flavor.

“As consumer drinking occasions continue to rapidly evolve, and as Ready-To-Drink cocktails continue to explode in popularity across the US, we want to arm our fans with elevated and exciting cocktail options from the iconic brands they already know and love,” said Paul Basford, William Grant & Sons US President and Managing Director.

As Master Distillers, industry leaders and cocktail aficionados, we know our spirits best, so we wanted to offer our expertise, batched for people to be able to finally enjoy bar quality cocktails at home, without the hassle. Batch & Bottle is uniquely positioned to meet consumers’ desires for premium quality drinks that they can share with their friends, with total ease of enjoyment.”

With a range of different tastes, moods and occasions, Batch & Bottle allows consumers to amp up a date night, a dinner party for your dearest friends, or anything in between. With simple a simple three step prep, you only have to chill, pour and add the appropriate cocktail garnish to indulge in the Batch & Bottle.

The ready-to-drink category today offers consumers more choices than ever before, but none are doing what Batch & Bottle is: delivering full-proof, bar-quality drinks that look striking on any bar cart or dinner table and elevate a special evening with the perfect cocktail for any palate,” said Jared Currier, Brand Manager, Innovation at William Grant & Sons. “And the exceptional ease of service—just chill in advance, pour into your favorite glass and add a garnish—means that offering an incredible cocktail is finally as easy as opening a bottle of wine.”

Let’s dive into each of the four Batch & Bottle expressions:

  • Monkey Shoulder Lazy Old Fashioned: An Old Fashioned should be no-nonsense. So, what better malt for the job than one that’s made for mixing? The Monkey Shoulder Lazy Old Fashioned combines Monkey Shoulder Scotch Whisky’s rich, vibrant and smooth blend with bold, bespoke bitters and golden sugar to give imbibers a legendary Old Fashioned.

Recommended Serve: Chill and pour over ice. Garnish with an orange twist.

  • Glenfiddich Scotch Manhattan: The mighty Manhattan needs a mighty Scotch. So, Batch & Bottle chose a bold contender: Glenfiddich Single Malt Scotch Whisky. This bright and balanced single malt soothes the sharp bitters and envelops the sweet vermouth, creating a cocktail both bold and delicate.

Recommended Serve: Chill and pour neat. Garnish with an orange twist.

  • Hendrick’s Gin Martini: The Hendrick’s Gin Martini is distilled with the unusual inclusion of cucumber and rose, and replete with undertones of floral, citrus and herbal curiosity. The Hendrick’s Gin Martini is light, yet complex.

Recommended Serve: Freeze or stir over ice for extra chill. Garnish with a cucumber slice.

  • Reyka Rhubarb Cosmopolitan: Fans can plummet into adventurous Icelandic depths with this playful Reyka Rhubarb Cosmopolitan. The glacial Reyka Vodka, made of Iceland, mingles natural rhubarb, tangy blood orange and zingy fresh lime to create an eruption of Icelandic intrigue.

Recommended Serve: Freeze or shake over ice for extra chill. Garnish with a lime wedge.

HUBA-HUBA CAMBODIA

By: Alexandria Baiz × Vaughn Lowery

Cameron Michael Parkes was born in Vancouver, Canada (in British Columbia). He graduated from the University of Calgary, majoring in chemical engineering with a minor in petroleum. While working at a consulting firm, the oil prices dropped and he used his severance package to travel the world.

Throughout his two year journey in Southeast Asia, he found himself at Koh Rong Samloem – a small island just off the coast of Sihanoukville, Cambodia. Two main places to stay are Saracen Bay (dense more modern filled with tourists) or Mpei Bay (rustic village area with tons of locals). After a few weeks in both places, Cameron decides to trench through the hot and sticky jungle (with snakes, wild monkeys and insects) to the most desolate yet serene part of the island, Sunset Beach. He quickly becomes acquainted with paradise and decides to plant his feet at Huba-Huba where he enjoys perfect sunsets with unobstructed sea views.

After a brief trip to Sri Lanka, he returns to Huba-Huba to discover that the owner’s husband had passed in a tragic motorcycle accident. The widow offered to sell and Cameron decided to purchase. Looking back he says, “I like the beach-jungle vibe which isn’t perfect. I love this spot. Right on the beach, beautiful bay, monkeys come around, geckos.”

Huba-Huba Cambodia

Situated at the end of the beach, it contains 4 bungalows, 1 family bungalow, 4 private double rooms and 1 dorm – 8 beds and 3 tents. Their kitchen is armed with one of the best cooks on the entire island. Their “BBQ Nights” serve up sensational samplers of pork ribs, tofu, prawns and chicken. Polite waitstaff, heavy handed mixologists and free painting station where you can repurpose instruments as well as pieces of wood to build a sculpture from scratch. Snorkeling gear is available for rental.

Sleeping Trees owned by Yves Chalot

Yves (a notable bartender from Brittany) came to Sunset Beach as a dive instructor and fell in love. One day after speaking with his bosses, he discovers a beachfront property for rent. Then he invites his brother (a carpenter) and they decided to erect ‘Sleeping Trees.’ The name derived from only having tree tents and the idea of ‘sleep in’ trees arose. The vacation area has two newly renovated bungalows, four tipis and four tree tents. Each space can accommodate up to two people. In addition, there’s a 4-room dorm which can host eight. At the present moment, both owners want to focus on better gardening and overall aesthetics of the property. Best attributes are their crepes, homemade rum shots and Reggae Night on Saturdays.

Robinson Bungalows

Sebastian Straub, former social worker in Switzerland, has now owned the property for 5 years alongside of his wife Julia. Their location is pet-friendly and includes 7 bungalows and 7 tipis. Each bungalow is constructed from wood with straw rooves perfect for a cozy and tropical stay. Their reimaginged family bungalow or ‘Cozy Kikki Lu’ is an ideal choice for guests seeking modern-like amenities. Tents make for a perfect glamping experience since they’re about thirty feet from the ocean. We enjoyed soaking up the sun in one of the 20 hammocks on the premises. Take advantage of the full bar and $1 beers during happy hour. The onsite restaurant takes advantage of seasonal local produce and fresh catches when possible. Our favorite menu items were the English breakfast, hearty fruit bowls, red snapper and barbecued pork & chicken skewer. You may enjoy meals upstairs (two-stories high) in an outdoor covered dining patio and/or at the beach bar. Every morning, a taxi boat for guests cost $10 to go to the city and is easily accessible.

Sunboo Beach Bungalows

Karlo and Parisa Zahipour Moarefi both came from Austria, borrowed money from friends and invested in Sunboo. There are 6 Bungalows and a dorm with 8 beds. The beach or garden bungalows have ceiling fans and newly renovated bathrooms and sinks. With a strong Italian influence, everyday dining is delightful. For breakfast they make french toast, pancakes, crispy bacon and homemade baguettes. For lunch fresh gnocchi, burgers and triple fried french fries. The dinner menu is westernized with our favorite thin crust pizza. And of course the Sunboo beach bar is the party area where we sip and socialize. One of the only establishments which serve wine on Sunset Beach.

Sunset Adventures Dive Shop

They offer a full array of outdoor activities on the island with two locations – Saracen Bay and Sunset Beach. We took their half-day diving class (for all levels) and their master instructors were extremely attentive. The rock climbing experience offers amazing views of the sea. Kayaking trips are a must-try with a guide to discover the wonderful island and underwater world. The most intriguing activity on the island is the nighttime plankton tour which allows one to witness and capture their bioluminescence.

Lazy Beach Resort

A private tropical hideaway on Koh Rong Samloem. The vacation area has 1 private beach, 22 bungalows and 1 guest house. The wooden bungalows all have two large double beds, en-suite bathrooms and a spacious balcony offering waters edge views of the warm tropical ocean. Paddle boarding is one of the most popular activities to do, but also board games, snorkeling and dive sites. The infamous bar is a must visit with the number one drink being the ‘Bahama Mama.’ All sorts of signature drinks like brown and white rum malibu, grenadine and juices. This private beach getaway is breathtaking.

Koh Rong Samloem Lighthouse

The most amazing experience on the island and also its highest point. We recommend you take a taxi boat to the drop-off or trail which leads up to the lighthouse. Rumored to have been an old military watch tower, the views are spectacular. Be prepared to climb at least 7 to 8 stories to the top. The smell inside the lighthouse is a tad overwhelming and rancid. Be willing to pay at least $1-3 USD for the private tour. That price does not include the taxi boat.

LS Cream Liqueur ($36): LS Cream Liqueur is an award-winning cordial inspired by cremas, an ancestral recipe native to Haiti with notes of coconut, vanilla, nutmeg, and cinnamon mixed with a blend of fresh cream and neutral grain spirits. Since it was impossible to find cremas in stores, husband and wife Myriam Jean-Baptiste and Stevens Charles decided to launch their own cream liqueur, inspired by Stevens’ late grandmother’s handwritten cremas recipe which she left behind and that the family had cherished for decades.

Sorel Liqueur ($40): Born of the spice trade, versions of sorrel date back to the 1600s, when hibiscus flowers were first imported to the new world from West Africa.
