Finding New Light

by Sonya Keshwani, two year breast cancer survivor & founder of StyleEsteem Wardrobe

There are many things no one tells you about getting diagnosed with breast cancer at 29 years old. How you will meet physical limits you didn’t know existed, and then keep pushing beyond them. How your entire identity – past, present and future – will be viewed through the lens of your diagnosis. And how the diagnosis and healing process are much more challenging and tough than pinkwashed TV commercials would have you believe.

Through all these instances, every cancer patient experiences moments when they have to make a decision to either see themselves as a continuous human being experiencing cancer and healing, or as a new person who is living a second chance life. I saw a third option for myself. I decided that the person who was going to be a “survivor” deserved to wear her challenges as beautiful accomplishments, while also appreciating the fullness of her new life.

Since a young age, fashion had been a medium for expressing my joy and vibrancy. So when I lost my hair to chemo, I channeled that same approach into the creation of fashionable turbans. Through the lens of beautiful fabrics and patterns, I learned that challenging situations are wrought with beauty and sparkle. I started the shift from seeing my bald head as a symbol of cancer, to seeing myself – my true character and strength – as beyond skin deep.  I went from creating new styles between chemo sessions, to launching a company that empowers women through cancer and hair loss, called StyleEsteem Wardrobe. This company and the mission to help others became my “why” on the path to healing.

One of the greatest blessings of my “why” is how it has enabled me to connect with other profound individuals and organizations on a similar mission – to improve and empower the quality of life for cancer patients. Earlier this year, my “why” brought me to A Silver Lining Foundation gala in Chicago, where I met Twist Out Cancer Advisory Board Member Gudrun Wu Snyder. We instantly connected as she told me about Twist Out Cancer, a place where cancer patients’ stories are turned into inspirational works of art. Their mission and the story of their founder, Jenna Benn Shersher, spoke to me like a glittering beacon of hope, similar to the one that inspired me during the creation of StyleEsteem. Right away, I knew I wanted to get involved, so Gudrun encouraged me to apply to the Brushes with Cancer program.

When I was selected as an inspiration for the Brushes with Cancer 2020 Chicago cohort, it was an emotional experience for me. Like we are told when we are young “you can be anything you want to be when you grow up”, I similarly told myself this as a cancer patient. That I could be anything through cancer – inspirational, fashionable, fierce and graceful. Two years into my survivorship, what I had told myself in my heart was being amplified by others in my community, and this alone was such a powerful experience for me.

My pairing with my artist, Sujata Gazder, a talented, intuitive and bold fashion designer, couldn’t have been more perfect. She saw beneath the surface of my diagnosis, into a story of family unity, broken stereotypes, and audacious hope. She saw my diagnosis as a catalyst for taking back control of my joy and my purpose in life. And we both agreed that hair loss was not loss entirely, it was the adornment of something new and beautiful in my life.

Due to the pandemic, as well as Sujata being based out of Chicago and me being based out of New York, creating the final masterpiece had unique requirements from each of us. Phone catch ups, Zoom fittings, and photo sneak peeks of her work in progress.  The dress beautifully and perfectly honored each element of my survivorship, from my hair journey and attitude, to my family and spiritual roots. I was amazed at how Sujata could create something I so deeply connected with after knowing me for such a short period of time.

Outside of my experience with Sujata, being part of this cohort has bonded me with countless other individuals who found their own path to beauty through the darkness of diagnosis. I am proud to stand among them as a survivor and a supporter. And I am so grateful for this space where our stories are transformed into inspiring works of art and unforgettable experiences.

Today I look forward to our virtual gala where we will celebrate each other’s stories, and to seeing my gown in person for the first time when I meet Sujata. This process has taught me that diagnosis is like a crystal. Whoever is holding your crystal in their hands can see new beauty, color and light in your story. And when you exercise vulnerability and trust to let that happen, you can find new meaning and purpose in your own path.

ROLLS-ROYCE GHOST

By Cassandra Yany × Vaughn Lowery

As of late, 360 was able to spend some time with the newly reimagined Rolls-Royce Ghost at the illustrious Fairmont in Austin. Prior to our arrival, the staff and media representatives all tested negative for COVID-19.

Our room at the Fairmont was spacious and we had a gorgeous view of the city. The hotel was filled with modern art and had a number of amenities available for our enjoyment, including an outdoor pool which was fitted with chaise lounges alongside large cabanas which illuminated at night. The hotel compliments Austin’s identity as a city on the rise, and the Rolls Royce New Ghost is similarly ascendant. Both have been reimagined for an elevated, excellent future. Full of innovation and prosperity.
During this event, we were ecstatic to be in the presence of friends, colleagues and advanced automotive architecture, and to be doing so safely. It was gratifying to come together and experience the Ghost’s artistry during this prolonged time of uncertainty.

Design

The Rolls Royce New Ghost was designed with a client-centered approach and with technological advancements to drive with ease. It has been termed “future-focused with a minimal aesthetic.” CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös describes this model as “the most technologically advanced Rolls-Royce yet.” It is offered in a variety of colors including Arctic White, Salamanca Blue, Tempest Gray and Gunmetal Gray. 360 had the experience driving Artic White, an electrifying yet brilliant shade certain to capture the attention of all.

360 Magazine President, Vaughn Lowery, said, “This vehicle is for an obsessive perfectionist, it’s a driver’s car – ergonomically fabricated for those who enjoy to drive or be driven.”

A team of specialists, engineers and craftsmen researched Ghost clients’ interests, opinions and taste patterns to meet drivers’ preferences. The style of the Ghost was created using the ‘Post Opulence’ philosophy, which designer Henry Cloke said is “about simplicity. [It’s] about something that doesn’t shout at you, but it whispers.”

Starting in the front, the bonnet has been lowered and tested for aerodynamics, which gives it a new look. The Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament can be lowered or raised using controls from the driver’s seat, perfect for that personalized touch. The New Ghost’s dashboard is lighter than that of the first model, giving the vehicle an overall more spacious feeling. It features hundreds of illuminated lights that resemble a constellation surrounding the Ghost nameplate, lighting up an evening like stars do a night sky.

The interior contains open-pore wood accents, which create a relaxing and serene experience. The headliner is adorned with celestial fiber optic lights, which can be dimmed or brightened from the driver and passenger seats. Occasionally, you might catch a streak of light that mimics a meteor. It is truly a one of a kind visual experience.

The trunk is power-operated, completely carpeted (even under the lid) and provides ample space to store any and all belongings.

Technology

The 2021 Ghost is a new and improved style of its 2010 predecessor. Engineers combined dynamic highlights from the portfolios of numerous types of cars into this edition. It was formulated to remove as much energy transfer as possible from the road into the body with the goal of creating a smooth ride.

The Ghost was built with sound absorbing materials which reduced the level of noise inside. Touch enabled media screens fold in and out automatically from behind the driver’s and passenger’s seats, providing entertainment for those sitting in the back. Wooden trays emerge as well, ones that can be used with or without screens.

A bespoke audio design allows passengers to use dials on the rear doors to control the stereo volume to their preference. Beyond this, the back seats have headrest pillows and individual controls that allow you to move forward or backward, and design the back of the seat to your desired level of comfort. There is also a refrigerator located behind the center console in the rear seats, perfect for storing beverages on the go and the definition of opulence behind the wheel.

The inclusion of USB-C ports is another phenomenal addition, as well as the wireless charger in the arm rest. Though there is no AI system such as Amazon’s Alexa or Apple’s Siri, the tech was on-demand and had a hands-free bluetooth function, a wireless hotspot, and Rolls-Royce Assist at your beck and call. Rolls-Royce Assist connects to an emergency services call center if necessary. These are the standard technical features for the New Ghost, but each Rolls Royce can be configured to its unique driver to make it “a motor car that is yours, and yours alone.”

Performance

The New Ghost’s all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering makes driving easy, regardless of road conditions. The car is planted firmly to the ground and corners very well. It was built on Rolls-Royce aluminum spaceframe architecture, which has been adapted to make way for advancements. The steering is much stiffer and more precise than that of the first Ghost, and the braking is more powerful.

The Planar system increases agility through the Wishbone Damper unit above the front suspension assembly, which creates a secure and effortless ride; the Flagbearer system, which uses cameras to read the road and prepare the suspension system for any upcoming changes in the road surface; and the Satellite Aided Transmission, which uses GPS data to pre-select the optimum gear for approaching corners.

Furthermore, the New Ghost is equipped with a 6.75-litre, twin-turbo V12 engine. The doors open and close electrically, which made for an easy entrance and exit. Engineering Lead Jonathan Simms, said the team “pushed [their] architecture even further and created a car even more dynamic, even more luxurious and, most of all, even more effortlessly usable.”

Additional Features

The iconic Rolls-Royce logo on the wheels is weighted so that it is always facing upright. Also, the key color is customized to match the accents of the car, a note that will be appreciated by any driver looking for a personal touch. Other notes in the interior include the inside of the doors being completely leather and having an embossment of the Spirit of Ecstasy. A button on the rear doors allows passengers to shut them automatically from the inside, and a tap of the door handle will close them from the outside. There is also a hidden umbrella that pops out from the rear doors when needed.

With so many refined and client-centered designs, it is no wonder celebrities like Beyoncé and Floyd Mayweather have strong connections to the moniker. Beyoncé has her own 1959 Silver Cloud Rolls Royce convertible. In her most recent project, Black Is King — the musical film available on Disney+ for her 2019 album “The Lion King: The Gift” — the artist sits atop the hood of a cheetah print Rolls Royce to match the catsuit she is wearing in the scene. The boxing legend similarly showed off his automobile collection earlier this year, which includes at least six Rolls Royce’s. The Rolls-Royce is undoubtedly the most iconic brand in pop culture, including being the most mentioned brand in top-charting songs. The Ghost edition is particularly bold amongst Rolls-Royce’s many stars, and anyone seeking to solidify their luxurious lifestyle need look no further for their ride.

Experiencing this sophisticated and sleek model awoken all of our senses during this challenging time of introspection. The presence of beauty and craftsmanship gave us a feeling of hope as well as pride. Rolls-Royce has long set the bar on lavish vehicles, and the 2021 edition of the Rolls Royce Ghost is no exception. For those interested in a slice of the high life, the Ghost is the very definition of it.

Twist Out Cancer

Twist Out Cancer will host its Brushes With Cancer program Sept. 25.

The program will be held in Warren, Michigan, at GM‘s Design Center and will kick off with a virtual art exhibition. Brushes With Cancer takes cancer survivors, battlers and caretakers and pairs them with artists who are able to depict the struggles, emotionally and physically, faced by those with cancer.

For the 2020 event, all 25 people affected by cancer and all 23 artists are employed by GM Design, and their story-inspired art will be on display virtually.

After the event, the art will remain on display until Oct. 30 and will then be auctioned off to the highest bidder with proceeds going right back to Twist Out Cancer to provide psychosocial support to those in a face-to-face fight with cancer.

Jenna Benn Shersher, the CEO of Twist Out Cancer, said 2019’s event was a smash success and that Twist Out Cancer was honored to be working with GM Design for the 2020 program.

“We have worked hand-in-hand with employees at GM Design during this unprecedented time to continue our program virtually, which is offering our Inspirations and Artists the same transformational experience our participants have come to expect over the past eight years,” Shersher said. “As Twist Out Cancer has grown, we continue to bring our impactful programming to new cities and new audiences around the world and are thrilled with the start of this new program.”

Virtual events will also be held in Austin Oct. 25 and in Chicago Nov. 14. Twist Out Cancer also encourages anyone to bring an event to their hometown by contacting Amelia Hanrahan at amelia@twistoutcancer.org.

Boats Sink at Pro-Trump Parade

On September 5, 2020, participants at the ‘Trump Boat Parade’ needed rescuing after at least four boats sunk around noon on Lake Travis in Texas.

The New York Times reported, “Boaters were set to travel around the lake, which is about 15 miles northwest of Austin, at 10 miles per hour.”
According to the events Facebook page, they wanted to “really make a statement,” but organizers did not expect the event to make national news for the reason it did.

A call came in around 12:10 pm to report the first boat was taking on water and subsequently more boats faced the same fate. After mulling over the audio from these emergency calls, ABC News reported, “At least three boats went down in 30 minutes, according to dispatchers, who reported several sinking boats around Paradise Cove.”

“Five boats sank, three of which were removed from the water, the sheriff’s office said in a Sunday release,” USA Today stated. “Two boats remained submerged, it said.”

Strangely enough, this wasn’t the first time a a pro-Trump boat parade ended in emergency calls. “A similar incident took place during a parade on the Willamette River in Portland last month,” according to Bloomberg. However, there was less damage done with only one boat reportedly sinking.

While the the day brought good boating conditions, the large number of boats all starting their trek around the lake at the same time caused unsafe water conditions, CNN stated.
Organizers still plan to hold more boat parades in the future disregarding the tragedies of the past two parades.

Police Kill Mike Ramos

By Eamonn Burke

New footage of the shooting of 42 year old Mike Ramos in Austin, Texas was released by the Austin Police Department last week. On April 24 of this year Ramos was shot after being cornered by police when a 911 was placed reporting two people (the other was his girlfriend) doing drugs in a car. Despite yelling that he was unarmed, which it was later proved he was, the police fired non-lethal bullets at Ramos. He then tried to flee the location in his car, but was shot and killed. His girlfriend survived the altercation.

Ramos became one of the names that was chanted in the streets of Austin during BLM protests over the death of George Floyd. There were demands for the termination of Austin Police Chief Brian Manley as well as calls for more systemic changes such as defunding the police in the city, which has a history of inequality and racism.

The new videos of the murder from four different body cameras do not show the shots that killed Ramos, but they can be heard. The video was reviewed by the District Attorney Margaret Moore, and the Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit alongside Texas Rangers are working to determine whether there will be charges against Officer Christopher Taylor, who fired the bullets that killed Ramos. The attorneys for Taylor say that the video is misleading and should not have been released to the public. “No judge has ever even ruled on whether or not evidence the government has released will even be admissible at trial” said attorney Doug McConnell

Mike Ramos’ mother Brenda Ramos is devastated and believes that the killing was unjustified. “I’m going to be in pain for the rest of my life,” she says, and states that she is unable to watch the videos.

Grubhub will be offering free delivery on orders of $15 or more for the entire month of August to new and existing customers on their first purchase of TYGA BITES*.

With the idea conceived by Tyga, Earl paired the artist with acclaimed chef, author, and TV personality, Eric Greenspan, to create a carefully crafted, bite-sized all-natural chicken that’s baked, not fried. Tyga curated TYGA BITES by adding his own specialty spice dusts that sprinkle the chicken with the right amount of sweet and spice, along with a wide variety of dipping sauces to further enhance the flavors.

“I wanted to make sure the whole menu, flavors, and even the packaging was on point,” said Tyga. “The bites are baked just right; choose a dip then take a sip! I even threw in some chocolate chip cookies for dessert.”

TYGA BITES’ online menu offers crispy, oven-baked chicken bites in three different spice dusts including Black Garlic, Lemon Black Pepper, and Peri-Peri, a mix of tangy, sweet and spicy. The bites will also be served with the option of twelve different dips, along with regular or sweet potato Tyga Tots, chocolate chip cookies, and beverages.

“Today begins the independent restaurant revolution,” Robbie Earl elaborates. “We have created a blueprint that restaurants can truly benefit from with our VACs (virtual additional concepts). We are offering restaurateurs the opportunity to operate a second brand within their existing brick and mortar location, increasing their bottom line by also becoming a virtual kitchen owner.”

“Working with our partners at Virtual Dining Concepts on the new TYGA BITES brand, we have the exciting opportunity to provide our diners a new variety to choose from when ordering in,” stated Kevin Kearns, Senior Vice President, Restaurant Network at Grubhub. “We’re thrilled to give independent restaurants on our platform the opportunity to increase their total business by working with TYGA BITES, and by adding new locations across the country for our diners to try – it’s a win, win for everyone.”

TYGA BITES is now available in more than 30 major markets across the country, and with the support of independent restaurants, it is projected to have contracts with up to 500 locations by the end of August. Quin NFN featuring Mozzy for 360 Magazine

Quin NFN – G-Route (feat. Mozzy)

Up-and-coming rapper Quin NFN dropped his newest single, “G-Route” feat. Mozzy, today.

Raised in the Northeast part of Austin known as “Da 4,” Quin NFN has become the Texas capitol’s top rapper for his high-energy flows. Following his singles “Sewed Up” and “Detroit Flow,” “G-Route” delves into his more serious side. On the track, Quin NFN raps about police brutality and his come-up as a musician, showcasing his versatility as a young artist.

The first song Quin ever made was a remix of a track by Chicago’s teenage drill rapper Lil Mouse, creating buzz in his neighborhood and Austin at large as the city began to take notice of the then-15-year-old who was just beginning to make noise. His momentum only grew when he released the video for “Gametime Pt. 2″ and promoted the clip on the SayCheese platform. Quin stayed consistent while maneuvering the pitfalls of Austin’s small scene and, a year later, he shared a snippet of the song that would change his life. Within days, the video for “Talkin’ My Shit,” a bass-heavy dose of Quin’s charisma and swagger, went viral.

After signing with 10K Projects in 2019, Quin released his debut album 4NUN, with features from PnB Rock and NLE Choppa. The project, which has garnered over 115 million U.S. streams since its release, found Quin challenging himself to push his rowdy sound further, but his latest project QUINCHO, out March 27, is a full-on showcase of his impressive versatility.

Despite all his success, Quin still lives in Austin, where he can be near his mom and where he’s most comfortable. He wants to be an example of how to handle growing rap fame for those that come after him in Austin, something he had to learn largely on his own.

“I don’t really feel like I had a chance to look back and reflect on everything yet,” he says. Given how quickly he blew up, Quin says he’s now focused on mastering his craft. “There’s still a whole lot of stuff I’m learning and trying to perfect,” he says, “But I get better every time I go to the studio.”
