Questlove × The Balvenie

Quest for Craft, a new digital series created by Questlove in partnership with The Balvenie Single Malt Scotch Whisky, debuts today. The series explores the convergence of craft and creativity, and in episode one, Questlove is joined by Saturday Night Live comedian Michael Che to explore the theme of chaos and discuss how unpredictability and disorder play a role in their respective crafts.

You can watch the full first episode on The Balvenie’s YouTube page

Questlove shares his thoughts on the debut episode, saying “What is chaos? When we say the word, we think of what’s unregulated, uncontrollable, surprising. Most artists and craftspeople say that they want to avoid it. But should they? In this episode, I talk to the Saturday Night Live co-head writer and stand-up comedian Michael Che, and the two of us look at the ways in which chaos can be a fuel for creativity.”

The Balvenie Single Malt Scotch Whisky has been perfecting the craft of whisky making for nearly 130 years, remaining fascinated by the creative processes and deep intrinsic values that elevate something from great to exceptional.

“I share a synergistic passion with The Balvenie on the importance of inspiration, passion and dedication to creativity and the making process. Our partnership is founded on an exploration into creative minds that invest their time, focus, and soul and into creating something singular and distinctive,” said Questlove. “Quest for Craft is about the pursuit of ultimate craftsmanship. In each episode, I dive deep into conversation with creatives who I have admired for their unique perspective, process, and productivity.”

Season One of Quest for Craft:

  • Ep. 1 Oct 28th – Michael Che – Questlove and Michael Che chat about how to infuse purposeful levels of chaos into their careers, how it can push you to a new level of creativity and how it can be a key factor in honing your craft.
  • Ep. 2 Nov 11th – Jimmy Jam – Questlove and Jimmy Jam connect on meeting their core creative partners at a young age, and chat about how instrumental their creative communities have been in helping them become the artists they are today.
  • Ep. 3 Nov 25th – Patti Smith – Questlove and Patti Smith delve into the topic of time as Patti reflects upon her time with Electric Lady Studios, from attending the opening party to going on to record many of her albums at the legendary studio.
  • Ep. 4 Dec 9th – Malcolm Gladwell – Questlove and Malcolm Gladwell cover the topic of practice and Malcolm shares the true meaning of his 10,000 hours theory, how it’s been misunderstood in the past and how getting better at your craft can involve going beyond your mastery to take on new challenges.

Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris will be the first major international event of 2022 and it marks the resumption of full-scale tastings. Highly awaited by the global wine and spirits industry for the variety of products on show and its business meetings, the event is now focusing on promoting attendance by key buyers, including those from outside the EU who are showing a strong interest in the exhibition.

Over three days, more than 2,800 exhibitors will convene in Paris to showcase their latest vintage, their flagship products and rare bottlings, all of them delicious pours to be shared with connoisseurs from around the globe. Chapoutier, Domaine Paul Mas, Castel Frères, Maison Sichel, Bernard Magrez, Grands Chais de France and Gh Martel & Cie Champagne will be attending, alongside less prominent vineyards well worth discovering, such as the Aquitaine Independent Winegrowers and family-run properties like Vins Chevron Villette, Vignobles Vellas and Château Castigno, to name a few. Attendees will include the Armagnac marketing board BNIA, Calvados Château du Breuil, Cognac Lheraud, Distillerie Warenghem, Gin de Binche, Glasgow Whisky, La Martiniquaise, Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Association and Distilleria Bertagnolli

“Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris is above all an event that brings people together and creates a sense of community. People welcome their clients there from a wide range of backgrounds to give international exposure to local, innovative products, from the little treasures to the prominent growths. Paris will host a celebration in 2022 and we are very much looking forward to being reunited with everyone once again”, stresses Rodolphe Lameyse, CEO of Vinexposium.

1923 Prohibition Bar Celebrates National Bourbon Day

1923 Prohibition Bar at Mandalay Bay, open seven days a week, announces National Bourbon Day specials on Monday, June 14 with 15% off their house bourbon flight available at the bar top with tasting notes. The bourbon flight is regularly priced at $32 and includes a sampling of today’s most popular bourbons including Buffalo Trace, Bulleit, Angel’s Envy and Angel’s Envy Rye.

The new, Prohibition-themed 1923 Prohibition Bar, is a private, hidden, modern speakeasy, serving bourbon spirits and signature barrel-aged specialty cocktails. The elegant venue also hosts live burlesque shows, live rock band karaoke and bourbon education and tasting classes.

Prohibition

For those of you who don’t know what prohibition and speakeasies are, Prohibition started in 1920 with the Volstead Act and was essentially a piece of legislation that outlawed drinking within the US, and was created as a result of the Christian Temperance movement that started with what we consider to be the first wave of feminism in the 1820s-1930s, as women wanted to, among other things, prevent spousal abuse that would occur as a result of drinking. Needless to say, the act was hard to enforce and people began distributing liquor illegally, known as “bootlegging,” and people would go to illegal bars, known as “speakeasies.” Gangs rose in popularity during this time, such as Al Capone, as a result of bootlegging. The act was officially repealed in 1933.

National Bourbon Day

National Bourbon Day is a day in which to celebrate America’s National Spirit, a drink created officially by Elijah Craig in the limestone shelf region, where most whisky is still made, in the 1700s. Charred barrels gave the whisky it’s iconic oaky flavor. It is still produced predominantly in America (hence the title of America’s National Spirit) and is enjoyed by many today.

International Whisky Day

3 Countries, 3 Whiskies, 1 Day — International Whisk(e)y Day

Raise your favorite glass on March 27 and sip on some of the best whiskies from around world. Whether you’re a traditional Scotch whisky drinker or are looking to explore something new like premium whisky from India or France, understanding the history about the countries distilling the spirit makes it an even more fulfilling experience.

  • INDIA – Whiskies from India have been gaining popularity in the past few years and for good reason. With India having a predominantly warmer climate, the maturation process is much faster as compared to other countries like Scotland — some say 4x faster!
    • The Indian Whisky To Try: Rampur Indian Single Malt Whisky (SRP: $70) knows there’s much more to the equation than age when it comes to creating a memorable expression. Nestled at the foothills of the Himalayas in the Indian city of Rampur, the spirit has a distinctive flavor profile replete with vanilla, honey, spices, and dried fruits. The spice is balanced but still present and representative of a premium-quality single malt whisky; to be savored neat or on the rocks.
  • FRANCE – In the land of Cognac, whisky you ask? The French have actually been distilling whisky for centuries and consuming it too! French Whiskies are often characterized by notes replete of fruit-forward flavor.
    • The French Whisky To Try: Bastille 1789 (SRP: $39.99) – Bright orange and amber in color, Bastille has intriguing aromas of orange marmalade, dried apricot, spice cake, pineapple blossoms and suede with a vibrant, dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body and a long accented finish. A remarkably fruity, exotic and enigmatic whisky that will make for a fabulous Old-Fashioned.
  • SCOTLAND – Not much needs to be said about Scotch whisky. As one of the most popular categories in the world, some scotches are flavored heavily by peat and smoke while others are light and fruity.
    • The Scotch Whisky To Try: The Famous Grouse (SRP: $29.99) is ranked number one by volume in Scotland for a reason. All at an affordable price, Famous Grouse offers candied fruits and buttery shortbread on the nose, with flavors of cinnamon and ginger, dried fruits and oak. Stir it in a Hot Toddy or enjoy it on the rocks, this whiskey will be your go-to after a long day, and a staple of bartenders around the world.

Chivas & Manchester United Soccer Club

The original luxury blended Scotch whisky, Chivas, has teamed up with the world’s biggest football club, Manchester United, in a three-year global partnership.

The collaboration will see Chivas and Manchester United join forces to celebrate their collective belief that blended is better – in life, football and Scotch. Just as Chivas brings together Scotland’s best malt and grain whiskies to create something extraordinary in the bottle, Manchester United brings together the world’s best footballers, a dedicated club team and a legion of fans all around the world to create extraordinary results on the pitch.

The partnership was revealed to fans in advance of the Club’s first Premier League home game of the 2018/19 season on Friday 10th August, through a film that explores the unique blend of characteristics that make up the Manchester United team. Shot in Los Angeles during the Club’s pre-season tour, the film stars an array of Manchester United first team players revealing an often unseen side to them, showing what defines who they are, both on and off the pitch.

Throughout the season, Chivas will be collaborating with Manchester United to demonstrate that blended is better – by encouraging fans to celebrate the blend that makes them unique, and showing that when players collaborate with their teammates they can achieve the greatest success.

Jean-Christophe Coutures, Chairman and CEO at Chivas Brothers, commented: “Blending has been in our DNA ever since James and John Chivas pioneered the art in 19th century Scotland. Partnering with Manchester United was therefore a natural fit; we both firmly believe that great things can be achieved when we come together – from balancing the perfect blend of malt and grain whiskies that go into our Scotch, to using the perfect combination of players’ skills on the pitch to create a winning team. We look forward to using our spirit to help showcase the spirit of the Club and its fans all around the world.”

Richard Arnold, Group Managing Director at Manchester United, commented: “Manchester United’s history is built on teamwork and we embrace Chivas’ belief that ‘blended is better.’ Our success both on and off the pitch allows us to bring together the best mix of people who help to make our Club the global name it is today. Each individual has their own skills but the way in which they blend together is what makes us a united team. It is a pleasure to welcome Chivas as Manchester United’s Global Spirits Partner and we look forward to working together to share this belief with our fans.”

The partnership will be brought to life through a 360 campaign activated across all touchpoints globally from August 2018. Chivas branding will also be displayed on digital perimeter boards at Old Trafford as well as throughout the stadium from the first game on Friday.

Find out more about the partnership and why blended is better at Chivas.com.

MILK & HONEY TAPAS

”If you don’t love this industry [Food and Beverage] then don’t do it … the amount of time is overwhelming.” – Al Rojas

By Vaughn Lowery

Nearly twenty years ago, Al Rojas received some investment capital from his father (died from cancer 25 years ago) to become a restaurateur. After years of successfully running Santa Barbara’s widely popular Alcazar Tapas Bar, he commenced to sink his teeth into another endeavor – Milk & Honey Tapas [MHT]. This eclectic, snug cafe with curbside dining provides an array of mystical libations and mouth watering snacks for foodies.

Specialty cocktails are their strong suit; however, the drinks are so intoxicating that you’ll have to taste their menu. After one drink, we were buzzing like busy bees in the hive. Hence, we started with flash-fried kale chips topped with manchego cheese and an order of Prosciutto Bundles stuffed with goat cheese. Yummy. Next up, we ordered PB&J Sliders (sirloin sliders, peanut butter, raspberry jam, Applewood smoked bacon) and Honey Lamb Pops (char broiled lamb chops; teriyaki, honey, butter, shallot, brown sugar sauce) – yes, we licked both our fingers and the bones. One of the most intriguing indigenous dishes we tried was Por-Que Pig?! (pulled pork shoulder, creamed pasilla chiles, garlic cilantro rice, manchego cheese, fresh cilantro, tomato; tomatillo cream sauce). Definitely not one of the most attractive items on the menu, but it sure was the most delightful – we scraped our bowls. For dessert, we received their house funnel cake alongside of a dark cup of coffee.

Rojas boasts of being a globetrotter (Spain, France, UK, Grenada, Copenhagen, Montreal) and reminds us that his infused assortments were inspired by his travels. Adorning smart specs and possessing a charismatic personality, no wonder his wait staff is equally professional and attentive – his power to lead permeates the air. Something that his father instilled in him, “Treat everyone equally [no matter what their position in life may be].” Moreover, the fun-loving GM and crew kept the dimly lit dinner service packed like a can of sardines.

In short, this is one of the best tapas and sips we have put our lips on in a long time. In fact, Milk & Honey Tapas rivals some of the top restaurants in New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles. If you possess an appetite for tangy handcrafted concoctions paired with savory bites, then this place will literally blow your wig back.
