MAALOT Roma

Shedir Hospitality Holding have announced the opening date of their first MAALOT hotel: MAALOT Roma. The opening period will start on October 1, 2021.

General Manager Edoardo Officioso comments; “My team and I are thrilled about this new opening and we can’t wait to open the doors to the first hotel of the MAALOT brand. This first property, located just a few steps from [the Trevi Fountain], aims to become the new ‘lounge’ in Rome where… [we can] share a drink or taste the gourmet experience we are finalising. After these last months we hope to offer locals and travellers a special place to gather and find the pleasure to socialise again” Located in what was the residence of Gaetano Donizetti (1797 – 1848) famous Italian opera composer of Don Pasquale, Lucia di Lammermoor and Maria Stuarda, MAALOT Roma aims to attract a young and more seasoned clientele looking for a vibrant and cosy place for gathering and being in the know in the most central part of Rome.

A restaurant and bar are set in a glass roof veranda. Signature element of the 30 distinctive rooms is paintings of hats that symbolise “setting your hat down and feeling at home.”

Property Features

MAALOT Roma is a boutique hotel developed around the concept of a lounge with private bespoke rooms. Set in an historical building, the property surprises the guests at arrival. On the ground floor, a central court with a glass ceiling welcomes guests in a winter garden where the Don Pasquale restaurant is located. Centre stage is the elegant chandelier which features light red fabric lamp shades. The court is a celebration of the colonial-British style where pastel colours, art pieces, customised furniture and a rich variety of textures make the lounge cosy and vibrant at the same time. The tables are made of handmade tiles. For each sitting place is an old fashion lace set in the tile. Sofas and chairs made in silky fabric and vibrant colourful details complete the look and feel to make the bistro an all-day lounge.

Still on the ground floor there is a bar area: a cosy spot in darker hues of browns and greens. Elegant use of dark wood elements and rich fabrics such as ruby-red shiny silk with sophisticated textures make the bar an exclusive and intimate area. Right at the end of the space is the reception area: a studio with an old fashion British-style library boasting a selection of books about Rome, luxury and fashion. Bespoke furniture made of Ebano wood makes the ambience welcoming and reassuring, away from the chaotic life of the city centre. The 30 rooms and suites are located across 4 floors. Each and every room is developed around a specific selection of vibrant colour schemes: dark blue, ochre, dark red. An Italian limestone fireplace completes the look and feel of the rooms. Guests will also have access to a fitness room–a 100 square meters area with the latest state-of-the-art machines.

Don Pasquale Restaurant Cucina & Bar

Designed to celebrate life and social gathering, Don Pasquale is set to be an all-day dining experience for locals and hotel guests. Named after one the of the most renowned work of Gaetano Donizetti, the restaurant is a place to relax, enjoy a cocktail or a glass of wine alone or in good company.

The Executive Chef Domenico Boschi, born and bred in Rome, celebrates the modern roman gastronomy. The menu pays homage to the tradition and attention to what the new modern food lovers are looking for. It offers a contemporary take on the roman recipes all in full respect of the local producers that enhance the local territory. The cocktail bar is an intimate setting dedicated to a selection of rum, premium spirits and traditional cocktails.

Great Cocktails Start at the Beginning: Highclere Castle Gin

By: Mary Holden

Let this tale begin as it began—with ancestors and an email. In the middle is the promise of delicious refreshment. The conclusion of this tale is filled with cheers to moderation, responsible entrepreneurship, and a respect for the ways in which history enlightens and entertains.

Adam von Gootkin, CEO and co-founder of Highclere Castle Spirits, is a self-described Anglophile whose soul is steeped in history. If he could time travel, he’d choose to go to ancient Rome…with a hope to have a bit of gold in his pocket. But, in 2016, he went to Highclere Castle—via an email.

Having transitioned out of the music industry (he’d run a recording studio that ran away with his personal energy), von Gootkin capitalized on his known interests (brewing beer, vinifying wine, and distilling spirits) and his then-unknown ancestral tendencies. After several years of successful distilling, he learned the history of a speakeasy owned by his great-grandfather and a well-known distillery located in New England run by his ancestors in the 1800s.

So…what was it that inspired von Gootkin to write an email to Lord Carnarvon to inquire about partnering on a new spirit venture? Only ‘the universe’ knows for sure, but he did. The email arrived during office renovations, and Lady Carnarvon remembers that Lord Carnarvon, “came down, waving this piece of paper saying, ‘What do you see? I think I might get back to him.’ And this was Adam’s email. It’s amazing what happens from these extraordinary coincidental beginnings.”

Weeks later, Adam and his wife Regina were amazed to visit Highclere and surprised to enter into an amicable and genuine friendship that led to an extraordinary partnership.

Rare tobacco is another one of his interests, and that’s why (during the development of the gin) von Gootkin got in touch with his friend, cigar maker Nicholas Melillo of Foundation Cigar Company. The two came up with (after 25 iterations) a cigar created with Nicaraguan tobacco specifically for Highclere Castle’s brand. Cue an image of Winston Churchill showing up in your imagination with a signature cigar between two fingers of his right hand, even though von Gootkin believes, “there’s nothing more beautiful than a female smoking a cigar!”

Developing the gin was based on the genius that occurred when von Gootkin and the Carnarvon’s put their minds together to create—and perfect—a gin to represent the hospitality and entertainment that’s been practiced for generations at Highclere Castle. Like the cigar, after 25 iterations, the gin was born.

What’s different about Highclere Castle Gin? While it includes notes common to most gin products: juniper, citrus, and certain spices, Highclere Castle Gin is finished with the addition of oats, post-distillation. These oats have been farmed on the estate grounds for generations to support the thoroughbred horses raised there. The gin debuted in 2019 and has won over 31 international awards due to its elegant taste.

Elevating the moment,” says von Gootkin, and keeping the standards of elegance and beauty,” is the purpose of a refreshing cocktail. “We’ve liquified that with this gin.” When he’s celebrating happiness and enjoying elegance, von Gootkin enjoys Highclere Castle Gin on the rocks with a twist of orange peel and a sprig of rosemary. He also enjoys the way champagne parties in a glass with the gin in a cocktail known as the British 75.

In addition to garnering success as a ‘spiritual entrepreneur, von Gootkin is the author of Living Proof: Onyx Moonshine’s Journey to Revive the American Spirit. With a foreword written by coach Mike Ditka, and chapters titled, “Rock Bottom to Bottoms Up: Why Falling Behind is Key to Moving Forward,” and “Socially Conscious Commerce: How Your Business Can Make the World a Better Place,” his words distill both his and the wisdom of, his ancestors.

The history of Highclere Castle provided the story of “Downton Abbey,” as well as the space for the invention of a luxurious liquor to pair with good foods, great people, and harmonious surroundings (even if we must match our surroundings with others via screens). History entertains us by reminding us to balance darkness with light, evil with good, falsity with truth, and grief with joy.

In that balance is the wisdom of moderation.

Hotel D’Angleterre Opens to Americans

“Copenhagen Is open to Americans!” said a thrilled Lucas Johannson, General Manager of the city’s grande dame Hotel d’Angleterre, this morning on a phone call to New York. Johansson’s message confirmed the Danish government’s decision to open Denmark to American travelers who have been fully vaccinated for at least two weeks against Covid-19.

For the city’s 266-year-old d’Angleterre, the opportunity to welcome back its traditional number-one source of guests is a major event. Set in the heart of Copenhagen, overlooking King’s Square, and home to the Michelin-starred Marchal Restaurant, the d’Angleterre is not merely the hotel’s most prestigious hotel, but a city landmark, with beautiful views of the city of Copenhagen.

“Welcome to your Danish home!” added Johansson, “we can’t wait to spoil you with our warmth, elegance and deliciousness.”

About Hotel D’Angleterre

Located on Copenhagen’s Kongens Nytorv (The King’s Square), Hotel d’Angleterre has long been the city’s address of choice for royalty, statesmen and the illustrious. The d’Angleterre has had an extremely colorful history, from its origins as a restaurant opened in 1755 by Jean Marchal, to its transformation into the d’Angleterre in 1795, to the opening of the current building in 1875 and its rebuilding just before World War I. The hotel reopened in May 2013, revealing the results of a two-year remodeling and re-imagining: a lighter and more elegant color palette; 90 spacious rooms & suites (created from the existing 123 rooms) plus several amenities including restaurant Marchal helmed by Jakob de Neergaard, Amazing Space Scandinavian spa, and Balthazar, Denmark’s first Champagne bar.

Tonino Lamborghini: A Lifestyle Brand

When high quality meets bold design, a unique accessory is born!

Founded in 1981 by Tonino Lamborghini, 2nd generation of the LAMBORGHINI industrial dynasty, the company has evolved into a luxury lifestyle and design powerhouse, creating superlative watches, sunglasses, leather, smartphones, restaurants, jet-setters hotels, food, and beverage, from coffee to vodka and energy drinks, distributed in 40 countries around the world.

” In 1981, I started up my new Tonino Lamborghini Style and Accessories company. At the time, I assisted my father in the family group, but I felt the need to do something exclusively of my own, different from the world of engines. I have always been interested in design and accessories, and I took inspiration from my engineering background. I’ve always loved products linked to mechanics; thus, it was obvious that the first accessory I designed was a watch. And even today, in every product I create, there must not be missing a detail somehow related to my family’s automotive and engineering heritage. Uncompromising spirit, Italian ingenuity, and design – together with the timeless legend of a brand recognized worldwide: are the values that characterize my brand. My company’s mission is clear: to spread the passion and spirit of Italy with unique and distinctive products, inspired by Italian industrial design and the Lamborghini family’s story”

“Tonino Lamborghini in 2021 will celebrate its 40th anniversary. My father founded the Italian spirit to the world through a series of products that range from watches, eyewear, leather goods  three corporate core businesses furniture, hospitality projects, and branded beverages. A real lifestyle experience brand!”

With the support of the designers of its Centro Stile, constantly under the supervision of Tonino Lamborghini, the company has designed and manufactured timepiece models that have become real style icons over the years.

Following the Lamborghini family’s vision and constant inspiration, the company’s designers have created unique watches like the Spyder, a watch totally inspired by the shield of the brand’s emblem that encloses the “Miura raging bull,” or timeless pieces like the Cuscinetto, whose first edition goes back to 1983.

The new Tonino Lamborghini Swiss Watches collection has been completely conceived and designed by Ferruccio Lamborghini, Tonino’s first son, representing the third generation of the Lamborghini family. From his famous grandfather, Ferruccio has inherited the name and the passion for motorcycles and high speed: he is a motorcycling champion in the Italian Championship.

With a team of designers and a historic Swiss watch manufacturer, Ferruccio has created eight new lines of timepieces that elegantly combine his father’s past and his experience in the 2-wheels world. A brand-new range of performing Swiss watches dedicated to daring, bold, audacious, intrepid, fearless, and pioneering people, with remarkable resourcefulness.
