M.O.D.O.K. HEAD GAMES

Showrunners for the upcoming Hulu series about the popular Marvel villain M.O.D.O.K. will also spearhead a brand new comic series with the character as the lead.

M.O.D.O.K. HEAD GAMES comes from Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum, who will showcase the leader of the terroristic organization AIM.

M.O.D.O.K. will be outsmarting the rest of the Marvel universe on his way to victory and domination, but this story is a bit more personal. He is haunted by memories of a family he doesn’t know, putting his power, and his brain, at risk.

Oswalt said the writers of the show created such an amazing world for M.O.D.O.K. that they had to go further.

“We had so much creativity to burn that Jordan just said we should fill this in in a four-issue comic series as a background. I always love that, to be able to go even deeper into that world,” Oswalt said.

Blum added that he was excited to write the 616 version, or our world’s version, of M.O.D.O.K. specifically.

“We leapt at the chance to write the M.O.D.O.K. who had been there since Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and put our spin on him and pull from a lot of the other versions of M.O.D.O.K. in the past. The character is very flexible and I think you can do a lot with him,” Blum said.

The premiere issue of the series will hit shelves of comic book shops everywhere Dec. 2, and you can keep an eye out for the series starring the historic villain streaming on Hulu in 2021.

Marvel StormBreakers

Last week, Marvel Comics announced the debut of MARVEL’S STORMBREAKERS, its latest preeminent talent distinction program to spotlight the next generation of elite artists in the industry. 

This new class is comprised of eight artists from all over the world. The artists will hold a two year spot and be working on different Marvel Universe projects over this time. 

“Named after Beta Ray Bill’s enchanted hammer, Stormbreakers is a new evolution of Marvel’s previous Young Guns program,” according to IGN, “which ran from 2004 to 2019 and celebrated a number of then up-and-coming artists like Steve McNiven, Russell Dauterman and Sara Pichelli.”

The eight STORMBREAKERS already have an extensive resume in the Marvel world and will become an even part of the franchise’s artist team. 

ComicBook.com reveals that, “As a group, they are already responsible for leading some of Marvel’s most popular titles, including Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Venom, and others, shaping Marvel’s shared storytelling universe.”

Today, Marvel is excited to reveal that local comic shops will receive a collection of variant covers featuring the extraordinary artwork of the inaugural class which includes Josh Cassara (X-Force), Patrick Gleason (Amazing Spider-Man), Peach Momoko (known for her best-selling covers), Natacha Bustos (Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur), Iban Coello (Venom), Carmen Carnero (Hellions), Juann Cabal (Guardians of the Galaxy), and R.B. Silva (Fantastic Four, Powers of X).

These groundbreaking artists will unleash their creative talents to bring some of Marvel’s most beloved heroes to life in brand-new artwork. These stunning character portraits in each Stormbreaker’s iconic style will be available as variant covers on issues of your favorite ongoing titles starting this December. 

According to Marvel, “The mythical Stormbreaker is an iconic symbol that debuted during one of many trailblazing eras of the Marvel Universe – bringing change within the pages of THOR, for legendary creators like Walter Simonson, and for Marvel fans everywhere. During this era, Marvel grew to embrace bold new initiatives, deeper character-driven stories, and unique new art styles.”

It is no surprise they used this to symbolize these eight artists. Each artist brings a new and unique style to the Marvel franchise and are already tastemakers in the Universe.

If I’m going to do a 40K comic as a mature creator I’d like to hit it hard,” Gillen explained in an interview with CBR. “The other part is, as the writer of the first mini in the Warhammer line I get to set the tone for everything else. Also, I get to introduce folks to the world. You asked me how I would explain Warhammer to somebody? I’d do that by giving them my mini.”

Marvel’s Indigenous Voices

Marvel announced a new, special series of variant covers written and drawn by the comic book industry’s biggest indigenous artists for MARVEL’S VOICES: INDIGENOUS VOICES #1.

One of the artists included in the project is Jeffrey Veregge, who recently finished an exhibition at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian.

Veregge will provide the art for covers featuring characters like Black Panther, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Black Widow, Captain America, Hulk and Thor.

Veregge said his own people, the S’Klallam Tribe, have used an art style known as Formline to tell their stories for generations. He added that his style is an extension of the art he has seen used by Native artists from his region.

“As a lifelong comic fan, artist and Native American, I am truly honored to work with Marvel Comics today. Not only to create pieces that represent a voice for Indigenous People in honor of Native American Heritage month, but also for the opportunity to share the same storytelling spirit of my ancestors by sharing the tales of some of today’s heroes,” Veregge said.

Marvel's EMPYRE #4 GETS SECOND PRINTING and is announced inside of 360 MAGAZINE.

EMPYRE #4 GETS SECOND PRINTING

The fourth issue of Marvel’s cosmic epic, EMPYRE, which pits the Kree/Skrull alliance against the Cotati, is getting a second printing after the first printing sold out.

Love prevails in the middle of an intergalactic war in this issue written by Al Ewing and Dan Slott with art by Valerio Schiti.

The first issue of EMPYRE was released in July, and second printings of the first three issues are already available, but the shocking fourth issue will hit comic shops for more fans to experience the story that Marvel said has reshaped the Marvel Universe forever.

The second printing of the fourth issue will also have a variant cover, which will be revealed by Marvel at a later date.

Black-Owned Superhero Brand

Aza Comics, owned by black woman creator Jazmin Truesdale and known for its roster of multicultural female superheroes, is aiming to continue providing hope and escapism for the world as people support the Black Lives Matter movement. “Aza Comics has always addressed the issues of black people in its storylines,” says Truesdale, “I’m just happy that now people are finally understanding what is happening and joining this fight that is truly everyone’s fight.”

The Aza Universe is centered almost entirely around women of color and has always tried to provide hope and inspiration for women around the world as they face various issues like racial inequity, sexism, misogyny and homophobia. This hits especially close to home for Truesdale as countless black women like Sandra Bland and Breonna Taylor have yet to see justice in a time when black women face the highest rates of homicide in the US.  During this time, Aza Comics received an incredible growth in sales and exposure as more people discovered what the Aza superhero universe is all about. “I just want people to at least feel safe in their imagination,” says Truesdale.  “For black people and many other people of color, everywhere we look pain is reflecting back at us.  I want Aza Comics to be that escape where you can feel heard and empowered to fight another day.”

DC Dream Drawings

Audible Inc., the world’s largest producer and provider of spoken-word entertainment and audiobooks, and DC  announced they will be offering ‘The Sandman’ fans the opportunity to have their wildest dreams come to life through their new campaign, ‘Drawn from The Dreaming’. The campaign launched nationally to consumers on July 8.

Through July 25, fans of ‘The Sandman’ are invited to submit a description of a memorable dream at drawnfromthedreaming.com or via a mobile phone at 515-SANDMAN(515-726-3626), a hotline narrated by creator Neil Gaiman who serves as fans’ guide through the ‘Drawn from The Dreaming’ experience. Selected fan-submitted dreams will be illustrated by a top DC artist, possibly one of the original artists from the graphic novels.

Dream drawings will be featured in an Instagram dream gallery, @DrawnFromTheDreaming, and fans will be tagged in their customized artwork. Everyone who submits a dream will be rewarded with an exclusive free audio episode from ‘The Sandman’, including a brief overview of the story so far, told by Neil Gaiman himself, only on Audible.

Adapted and directed by Dirk Maggs and narrated by Neil Gaiman, who serves as creative director and co-executive producer, ‘The Sandman’ Audible Original features a powerhouse cast led by James McAvoy and includes Riz Ahmed, Kat Dennings, Taron Egerton, Bebe Neuwirth, Michael Sheen, Andy Serkis, and more.
