Colin in Black & White – Limited Netflix Series

By: Rumnik K Ghuman

Colin in Black & White is a new limited Netflix series recently released in October. This series is following Colin Kaepernick through his journey in high school as he had to face multiple issues as a black child who had white parents. During high school, Colin was a straight-A student who also played football, basketball, and baseball all year round. This 6 episode series attacked multiple issues a black child sees, but it was even harder since his parents didn’t understand how to explain to Colin why he was treated differently or had to work twice as hard to prove himself to the world. 360 Magazine is pleased to write something regarding this series as this is only available for a certain time period and is accessible only in a few states.

To begin with some history why is this series so special to watch. It’s about ex-football player, Colin Kaepernick, who had kneeled in protest to police brutality and racial inequality during the national anthem back in 2016. Since then Kaepernick was not drafted by any team which quickly ended his career. This series truly shows what a black child goes through in a huge population of white superiority. Kaepernick played six seasons for the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL with 13 rushing touchdowns. It’s crazy to even think that a kneel would affect a football player’s entire career, but he wasn’t the only one to do it. The reason why he got so much hate was that he was the first.

Each episode had an individual topic or issue brought up and focused on. Some topics were about appearances, as the braids were a big symbol of being a Thug apparently, which if you looked up what a thug actually means it’s defined as a violent person, especially a criminal. This includes no definition of how a thug looks like. This is the black culture that was given a label to place black people into a box of judgment. The next episode was the introduction of discrimination that made Colin realize he was going to be treated very differently compared to his peers. As a scene of him going out of town to witness how he was being watched as he was the only black person in the hotel for a baseball game. This kept going into how the world viewed black people in general. Colin was always told to take the easy way out, never really challenge himself. He had a great arm in baseball, but something about being rejected for football made him want to do it more than anything. This idea of rejection and always being the second choice came for him since day one from his birth parents. Colin was given up for adoption as a 5-week baby, and for his adoptive parents, he wasn’t the first choice either. Some other topics brought up were the standard of beauty and how black beauty was looked down upon compared to white people. There were certain acts that were very questionable of Colin’s parents that you can see in the show. Some more topics were of acceptance and perseverance to be the greatest.

One aspect that really stood apart from this series was that it was not just a biopic. It was narrated by Colin Kaepernick and he would compare some situations that happened to him to the history of black people or even black athletics. One thing brought up was the idea of being perfect as black people. This goes back to slavery when slaves were bought based on how perfect they were body-wise to achieve good work and worth in a buyer’s eye. Colin compared this to how black athletics were examed so deeply to make sure they are in good shape and perfect. Multiple other athletics came up and what they had to go through in order to bring to light that this isn’t the first time something had happened. Allen Iverson, a Basketball player for the NBA, was attacked for his braids and the way he dressed. Romare Bearden, a baseball player for the National League, was told to play like a white man and had to fit in.  Ava DuVernay, Director of Colin in Black & White, brought a big aspect of history for children to understand what racism is about. This show was so simple and lighthearted that all kids of any age will understand and learn something much better than what they are taught in schools.

This show has gotten a mixed reaction as most supporters of Kaepernick’s have been on his side from the moment he had kneeled. This series does attack multiple parts of the government and certain names and photos have been shown of the previous United States President, Donald Trump. It was interesting to hear that this was a limited series and only available to watch in a certain number of states. In the history of streaming services, no movie or series has been limited for no reason. This is a very controversial topic as it includes Colin Kaepernick’s entire story and he had received a huge amount of hate. Many still think that the racists in America got a platform to become more vocal of their opinion was because of President Donald Trump which led to the end of Kaepernick’s football career. The amount of risk that went into this series is huge, but the love and support of the audience had this show rated in the top 10 on Netflix.

To end off this article, some phrases that Colin Kaepernick used to express what this world uses against black people were for example, “groomed in a system……always the second choice…..intensional built this way…..a white man’s stamp of approval.” You can see how much of government, history, and judgment goes into the way people don’t change their perspective about black people. After being an athlete all his life, Colin Kaepernick finally found what he was truly born for to be a civil rights activist

Bollywood Box Office vs. Streaming Services

By: Rumnik K Ghuman

As the entire world has come to enjoy being at home and watching their favorite movie stars at the ease of their sofas. Bollywood directors and producers now release the future scope of streaming services within India. Due to the pandemic and having two strict lockdowns, no movies were released in the theatres or as it’s said in Bollywood the Box Office. Box Office India is the home for the latest movie news from India, this platform gives information about how much money each movie is earning in the theatres, what the critics have to say, and multiple awards are given out based on the Box Office data. What’s interesting is why are the movies released on streaming services, Netflix or Amazon Video Prime, not included in the count of the Box Office data?

There are pros and cons to releasing a movie in theatres. Some positive things are the fact of getting more accurate data about how much gross the film has achieved, the number of people who actually went to the movie theatres, and to be acknowledged on a big platform in India. The ranking you get in the box office is very important to each actor’s career. The negative things are that your audience only sees the movie for a limited time period, they only pay once for the film, and they have to leave their houses in order to see the movie.

Compared to streaming services, a huge number of fans can see the movies at the ease of their homes with only paying a monthly fee for a service where they can watch any movie or show unlimited times. The gross will not be counted when releasing a movie via streaming services, but it does give more views for anyone to see the movie for multiple years based on the contract with the streaming services as well as how well the movie itself does on the platform. Not many negative things have come out of streaming services as it’s a universal service now and almost everyone has access to it. Its been a big decision for multiple directors and producers to make the switch of only releasing on streaming services and not being known in the Box Office.

Some streaming services released multiple Hindi movies since the pandemic has begun. Some which were very controversial topics or include some major events that happened in Indian history, for example, Udham Singh, a freedom fighter in 1947, Shershah, a story about an army officer who lead a mission that led him to die at the age of 26, and Mimi, a struggling dancer needs money to get a role in a movie and she goes into being a surrogate for a white couple. These movies were well-praised and multiple people wanted them to be in the Box Office as they would have ranked very highly on the list of movies this year.  These movies have a great and effective storyline that was unfair for the creators as they reached multiple people in India compared to the theatres. Some other movies that didn’t get the appreciation they should have were Meenakshi Sundareshwar and Sherni, these two movies didn’t promote as much, but still did well as they are more progressive movies.

The audience worldwide was very pleased to gain a more broad option of movies through streaming services and enjoy that they can watch all these movies on the first day of release and access it as many times or even replay it. Streaming services have grown very late in India as most of Bollywood followed the cinema route, but streaming services have brought more opportunities for small artists to get time to shine and blow up their acting, directing, or writing careers. Multiple producers are saving on money as they only have to promote online via social media and release parties are optional now. More controversial topics are coming up in the movie industry and have brought more light for Indian society to have a broad state of opinions. Releasing movies on streaming services gives more attention to Indian movies as more of an international audience can see the movie and watch it with subtitles. People are able to watch their movies on replay or whenever they want to so this gives more views to the movies. This count of lasting views brings more attention to movies in a multiple-year span rather than just a couple of weeks as compared to the Box Office.

The growth of Bollywood has been great as it expanded to more series rather than movies. As the countries population has grown to love the series that are on streaming services, they like having a longer storyline and creating a fanbase for certain star casts. It’s interesting to see how much has changed because of the pandemic, which has expanded Bollywood to international countries. Bollywood has started to create web series on different platforms they have created themselves within the industry. It’s commendable how fast series have been growing especially the culture of binge-watching in India. As it is very common for daily soap shows that release an episode every day, but now audiences would like to see the entire series in one sitting. This is slowly affecting channels that are very popular in India to this day. Multiple tv channels, for example, Star Plus, Colors TV, and Sony Entertainment Television have created their own streaming services to give more content to multiple people. In India, they call it OTT as a term that stands for “Over The Top” media services in some sense. The amount of movies, shows are releasing via these streaming services is quite the talk in Bollywood to even release movies in Theatres at this point.

360 Magazine is pleased to see a new start of web series for Bollywood, but there is something special about Hindi movies that represent Bollywood. Bollywood and the tv industry are very important in India and seeing that change can be a positive or negative thing. Only certain people can make that judgment.

In Villas Veritas Appoints WEILL for PR

WEILL has been appointed public relations counsel to In Villas Veritas (IVV), arguably the most exclusive villa rental agency in America – so exclusive, in fact, that its existence has been known only to a select few.

Marking its 25th anniversary in 2022, In Villas Veritas was founded by Laura Blair at the urging of her high-net-worth friends, who had long been relying on her expertise in finding the perfect villa or hideaway in America, Europe, the Caribbean, or Asia. 360 Magazine is excited to see how two huge companies work together.

An American born in Paris and raised internationally, Blair specializes in securing private access to villas, houses, castles, schlosses, and hideaways not listed on the plethora of standard vacation-rental websites. “My goal is to find the ideal location and property for my clients, as opposed to shoehorning them into a villa that just might happen to be available,” says Blair. “This is why we vet all of our properties personally because knowing the property and region is the only way to ensure guests’ total delight.”

IVV lists villas and exclusive homes throughout the Caribbean, the United States, Central America and Europe, and also specializes in making private islands in Europe, the Caribbean and the Maldives available to its clients.

“Finding the ideal destination for our travelers is an art,” says Blair, “because one must take into account the client’s home environment, expectations, taste levels, security requirements, activity levels, and staffing needs. The breathtaking beachfront villa with mediocre staff is just not something I am prepared to countenance.” IVV’s niche is one that seeks to service only the most discriminating and demanding clients.

“We are thrilled to have been asked to represent In Villas Veritas,” says Geoffrey Weill, WEILL founder, and president, “because, especially since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, more and more families are seeking divine vacation locations, where they can bask in both luxury, safety and utter privacy.”

Long-lasting COVID-19 Protection

In what could be very good news for the immunocompromised, an antibody cocktail tested at the University of Virginia School of Medicine appears to offer long-lasting protection from COVID-19.

The cocktail, manufactured by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, reduced the risk of COVID-19 infection by more than 80% for more than eight months, the company announced in a news release. The 81.6% risk reduction seen in the second to eighth months after administration continues the robust, 81.4% risk reduction seen in the first month.

William A. Petri Jr., MD, PhD, was one of the leaders of UVA’s testing of the antibody cocktail. He was pleasantly surprised by the durability of the protection reported by Regeneron. He said the drug could be of particular benefit for immunocompromised people who do not develop a strong response to vaccination.

“The significance of the finding is that the antibody cocktail can prevent COVID-19 in immunocompromised individuals whom we know sometimes fail to respond to the vaccine,” said Petri, an infectious disease expert.

Lasting COVID-19 Protection

Regeneron’s new analysis looked at the results from 1,683 people who were not infected with COVID-19 and did not have antibodies to the virus. Among trial participants who received the cocktail, none was hospitalized for COVID-19 during the following eight months. Only seven were infected with SARS-CoV-2, compared with 38 who received a placebo. Thus, the antibody cocktail provided more than 80% protection for 2-8 months.

The federal Food and Drug Administration first authorized Regeneron’s cocktail in November 2020 to treat patients with mild to moderate COVID-19. The federal regulators then expanded the authorization in July to allow its use as a preventative treatment in people exposed to COVID-19 and those at high risk of exposure, such as nursing home residents. Regeneron’s antibody cocktail is not a vaccine and is not a replacement for a vaccine. However, it may greatly benefit people who do not develop a strong immune response to vaccination, such as patients receiving treatment for cancer and other people who are immunocompromised, said Petri, of UVA’s Division of Infectious Diseases and International Health. 360 Magazine is interested and excited to see what science can do in order to help protect us.

For such patients, getting a periodic dose of the cocktail – annually, perhaps — could provide the immune protection that their own bodies can’t, Petri said. (More research will be needed to determine the best dosing interval.) “While these results still require peer review to ensure their accuracy, this is likely to be a significant step forward in the prevention of COVID-19 in the immunocompromised,” Petri said.

Unveiling of James Turrell’s Ta Khut Skyspace

Posada Ayana, an idyllic 17-room hotel in the vibrant Uruguayan town of Jose Ignacio, announces the unveiling of James Turrell’s first freestanding Skyspace in South America (titled Ta Khut) on its property grounds on November 20, 2021. Located steps from the famous Mansa beach, the hotel briefly opened to local residents in 2020 and will re-open to the world in November 2021. The idea behind Posada Ayana is to offer its select guests relaxed hospitality rendered with the glamour of the Cote d’Azur of the 50s and 60s and with the privacy and comfort that only a luxury, adultonly property can guarantee. A feeling of utter serenity can be savored the moment guests step onto the property: concrete and local rocks are juxtaposed to the warmth of the Paraguayan Lapacho wood, creating ample spaces (both public and private) that live harmoniously within the surrounding lush gardens.

Each guestroom is at least 500 sq feet with private gardens or ocean views and drenched in natural light with floor-to-ceiling windows on at least two sides. The public spaces are equally stunning with a spacious terrace housing the on-property restaurant overlooking the gardens and the ocean in close distance. The interiors have been crafted to respect the style of the property and its environs: every piece of furniture is sourced locally from Uruguay or Argentina and the majority is restored or unique vintage pieces from the 50s and 60s sourced from the adjacent towns of Montevideo and Punta del Este. Local production and sustainability are also important pillars for the property: from the products used in the kitchen to the hotel amenities, everything is sourced locally and — where applicable — recycled and organic. 360 Magazine is pleased by the photos of the skyspace and its very interesting to learn about history and influence of so many different countries.

Robert and Edda Kofler, owners and creative directors of Posada Ayana, worked with James Turrell and his team for over two years to build and house the first freestanding Skyspace in South America — titled Ta Khut (The Light in early Egyptian) — as part of their property’s park. Measuring 9.44 m diameter and 7.62 m high, the structure is made of 42,000 kg of pure white marble from Laas, South Tyrol tracing the heritage of Robert Kofler. Turrell’s signature immersive light installation, carving out a 16-foot piece of the sky and framing it as a canvas with infinite depth, is set atop a 26 m rectangular temple-like structure clad in earth and grass with entrances to the dome opened on both sides. The Lapacho wood doors invite the viewer to come into the structure — paved in an earthy, merlot-colored granite reminiscent of Turrell’s native Arizona– to experience the space of the sky that is no longer far and unattainable but brought close in touch with the viewer according to where they are sitting.

James Turrell says, “This piece presents the merging of two great traditions. You can see the pyramidal structure in the Gobi in China and in the Western Hemisphere in the Mayan culture and in Egypt.  Merging with this, you can see the Stupa, which actually comes from Tibet and carries through Sri Lanka, Thailand, China, and up to Japan. I love the idea of bringing together the ephemeral and the physical through light as a medium and from the light outside and the light inside”

The Koflers were the ones to introduce the Master of Light to this part of the world for he had never been to Uruguay before this project. Turrell was captivated by the advancing, contemporary art scene in Uruguay and particularly fascinated by the beguiling sky — especially the night sky — of Jose Ignacio.

Robert and Edda Kofler note, “We are humbled and honored to have worked with an artist that we admire and respect so much. The entire process was one of the most creatively fulfilling projects we have been a part of and we cannot wait to share the art with our guests and the world.”

Room rates start at $450/night. Reservations and additional information for Posada Ayana, including full buyouts of the hotel, can be found on Posada Ayana’s website.

ChargerGoGo, World’s Largest Portable Phone Charging

ChargerGoGo, the world’s leading network of on-demand phone charging systems for commercial venues of all kinds, has now entered the U.S. market. Emerging as an essential amenity at a fast-growing number of businesses, ChargerGoGo’s kiosks may be found at the Las Vegas Convention Center, MGM Grand Garden Arena and AREA15, among hundreds of others. After establishing itself across Asia, where it deployed more than 1 million charging kiosks and attracted more than 360 million users and 20,000 distributors, ChargerGoGo is poised to become the largest shared power bank network in the United States.

Unlike static charging stations, ChargerGoGo allows customers to pick up a portable battery, charge their phones and then return the battery to any nearby ChargerGoGo kiosk, a first-of-its-kind service to debut at this scale. Ideal for installation at restaurants, bars, nightclubs, coffee shops, stadiums, convention centers, hotels, hospitals and retail centers, ChargerGoGo allows users to charge their phones on the go, without wasting time or missing important notifications.

With smartphones now considered essential to daily life, battery life has not kept pace with user consumption. In fact, 80 percent of all phones experience a low battery charge at least once a week while users are away from home, and nine out of 10 people experience “panic mode” when their phone battery goes below 20 percent. This occurrence can result in them leaving the business early, causing potential decreases in revenue. Offering a convenient mobile charging station enables venues to retain these customers and increase sales. 360 Magazine is very impressed by the number of advancements being made in the world to have a better technology outlet.

“One of the most frequent requests our clients receive from customers is to help them charge their phones,” said Chris Meyer, chief executive officer, Chris Meyer Global, a consultancy specializing in the meetings and global trade industries. “Now, ChargerGoGo kiosks enable them to do so effortlessly, easing their minds and allowing them to enjoy their time worry-free while they’re at a meeting and events facility, bar, café, or any other commercial venue.”

In addition to its portable batteries, other features unique to ChargerGoGo include the kiosks’ customizable LED screens that can display the host’s promotional messages and a compact, modern design with custom wrapping options so the host venue can brand them with their logos or other imagery. Another innovative feature distinguishing ChargerGoGo from its competitors: venues that install the kiosks on their premises can earn passive income through the company’s revenue-sharing model.

“Our mission is to improve people’s lives by saving them from constantly dying phones while helping host venues boost sales, grow revenue, and elevate their customer experience,” said June Zhu, founder, ChargerGoGo. “Our vision is to bring ChargerGoGo charging stations to every commercial facility with foot traffic nationwide.”

Sharon Lockhart – Guggenheim Museum

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao will be presenting Sharon Lockhart. Rotation Notation, the third and last exhibition of 2021 in the Film & Video Gallery, a Museum space devoted to showing fundamental works of video and moving image art, and sound and video installations.

This exhibition shows a video installation and photographs by Sharon Lockhart (b. 1964, Norwood, USA) based on her encounter with the works of Israeli choreographer Noa Eshkol (b. 1924, Degania Bet kibbutz–d. 2007, Holon, Israel) soon after Eshkol died. Lockhart’s discovery of Eshkol’s works led her to further her formal exploration of human motion and expand the collaborative dimension of her work through her engagement with the choreographer’s manifold and largely communally-enacted practice.

The works of Lockhart pay particular attention to human activity and its modes of organization, be it social or solitary. 360 Magazine is pleased to watch this video as it truly shows a very different aspect.
