Top Stories – March

As we head towards another month is 2022, it seems as though this year will be quite eventful. Below are the top news stories for the final winter month!

Ukraine Huminitarian Crisis

The war in Ukraine is no longer just a story about a conflict between nations. It’s having an immediate impact on millions of people, creating multitudes of refugees, which in turn is creating a worldwide humanitarian crisis. It’s having an impact on global food insecurity since Ukraine produces a significant share of wheat supplies for other countries. While across the border, Russia also produces a large number of food experts, which are not inhibited by sanctions against the invading country.

Oil and gas experts from Russia are hanging in the balance as the West considers a ban on those imports. Financial institutions have sanctioned Russia, and the financial system in Ukraine has been impacted, causing a major economic disruption in that region of the world. The supply chain for goods from these countries and through them is being disrupted as a result of the violence. How can the West address and overcome all of these disruptions while taking a hard line against Russia’s aggression?

Ukraine Further Pushes No-Fly Zone

Ukraine’s defense ministry released a video of an edited hypothetical attack on Paris that would occur as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The ministry warned that this attack would be possible if a no-fly zone weren’t issued to prevent aerial attacks. The footage showed bombs going off near the Eiffel Tower.

Ukraine has called for a no-fly zone and other preventative measures in order to prevent Russia from overtaking more areas of the world. Many Ukrainian and global officials see the attacks against Ukraine as an unjust overtaking of territory. They consider Russia’s defense of the war as an attempt to prevent Ukrainian aggression as doctored. Others have suggested that the war is partially stemmed in history with Russia considering Ukraine and Russia to be the one and the same, as well as making note of Ukraine’s conveniently located Black Sea ports.

NATO has thus far been against a no-fly zone as that might invite Russian aggression towards NATO territories.

Jussie Smollett Sentencing

Actor Jussie Smollett was sentenced to 150 days in jail (around 5 months) and 30 months of parole after his 2017 scandal in which he lied to police officers about an attack that occurred against him. He was found to have paid for the attack to occur against him.

Smollett’s final comments before being taken away have been the result of much controversy. Smollett stated, “Your honor, I respect you and I respect your decision, but I did not do this and I am not suicidal. If anything happens to me when I go in there, I did not do it to myself, and you must all know that.” Many have found this statement humorous, including actor 50 Cent, who joked that he would say the same thing if he were to appear in front of a judge again.

Ryan Coogler Detained

Film director Ryan Coogler, known for 2018’s Black Panther, was briefly detained in January at a Bank of America in Atlanta, Georgia. Coogler’s medical assistant asked to be paid in cash, thus the director wrote a note suggesting the money should be counted discreetly given it was an amount over $10,000.

However, despite Coogler not being visibly armed, officers arrived and pulled guns out on the director, who appeared visibly confused yet nonetheless complied with their orders. He was handcuffed and escorted to a police vehicle, but released moments later once his identity had been confirmed.

Senate Confirmation Hearings

As Justice Steve Breyer left his position as Supreme Court Judge, President Biden appointed Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, who is now being confirmed by the Senate. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) asked the judge about critical race theory, because Brown serves on the board of a school district with curriculum including critical race theory.

Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) made a false statement suggesting Brown referred to President George W. Bush and former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld as “war criminals.” Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) later corrected him.

History of Black Panther

As Black History Month approaches, Marvel is taking fans on the ultimate historical journey, uncovering the evolution of Marvel’s first Black superhero: T’Challa, the Black Panther.  Marvel Entertainment and SiriusXM announced that their latest original unscripted podcast series, The History of Marvel Comics: Black Panther, premieres Monday, February 14.

The six-episode documentary podcast, hosted by New York Times best-selling author Nic Stone (Shuri, Dear Martin), explores the comic book origins of the Black Panther through conversations with the creators who shaped T’Challa’s journey, celebrates the innately Afro-Futuristic world of Wakanda, and analyzes the larger social impact of the character.

The History of Marvel Comics: Black Panther brings writers, artists, and historians together to share a story that only Marvel can tell. The show features exclusive interviews with notable talent including Brian Stelfreeze, Christopher Priest, Don McGregor, Joe Quesada, John Ridley, John Romita Jr., Reginald Hudlin, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and more.

Throughout The History of Marvel Comics: Black Panther, Stone will take both new and lifelong fans behind-the-scenes in a definitive tell-all of the incredible journey of T’Challa, how he came to be Black Panther, and how he and the world of Wakanda have evolved since. The show explores some of Black Panther’s most pivotal moments including Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s 1966 debut of the character at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, his continued evolution through the birth of the Black Power Movement, his time with the Avengers, and of course, the launching of Black Panther’s adventures.

“As thrilling as it’s been to watch Marvel’s First Black superhero leap his way to the top of fan-favorite lists over the past few years, getting to dig into his origin story with the people who made him (and the characters around him) is truly the coolest thing I’ve ever gotten to do,” said host Nic Stone. “I can’t wait for fans to hear from the individuals who have spent almost 60 years shaping, expanding, and humanizing our beloved King of Wakanda and Black Panther, especially as his world continues to grow.”

The series will initially be available exclusively on the SXM App and Marvel Podcasts Unlimited on Apple Podcasts. Episodes will be widely available one week later on Pandora, Stitcher, and all major podcast platforms in the U.S. Learn more HERE.

The Book of Boba Fett Soundtrack

The Book of Boba Fett Vol. 1 (Chapters 1-4) Original Soundtrack is available and will be followed by The Book of Boba Fett Vol. 2 (Chapters 5-7) on Feb. 11, 2022. Both soundtracks feature music themes by Oscar, Grammy, and Emmy-winning composer Ludwig Goransson (The Mandalorian, Tenet, Black Panther) and score by Joseph Shirley (Bad Trip, The Mysterious Benedict Society, Fairfax).

Commenting on his score, Shirley said, “The Book of Boba Fett Volume One follows Boba’s heroic journey through Chapters 1-4. Musically, it explores the genre-melding vignettes that Jon and Dave so beautifully wrote into Boba’s expanding myth.  Western, tribal, mystery, religioso epic, high-stakes action, retro-futuristic breakbeats, and classic gangster movie tendencies—they each have their moment within this soundtrack, while using Ludwig’s Main Theme as my North Star.  It’s an honor for me to contribute music to this dearly loved Star Wars universe; an adventure I do not take lightly or will ever forget!!”

“The Book of Boba Fett,” a thrilling Star Wars adventure teased in a surprise end-credit sequence following the Season 2 finale of The Mandalorian, finds legendary bounty hunter Boba Fett and mercenary Fennec Shand navigating the galaxy’s underworld when they return to the sands of Tatooine to stake their claim on the territory once ruled by Jabba the Hutt and his crime syndicate.

“The Book of Boba Fett” stars Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen. Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Robert Rodriguez, Kathleen Kennedy and Colin Wilson are the executive producers. Karen Gilchrist and Carrie Beck serve as co-executive producers, with John Bartnicki producing and John Hampian as co-producer.

The first 4 episodes of The Book of Boba Fett are now streaming on Disney+ with new episodes releasing Wednesdays.

The RIAA-certified 2x Platinum album received five Grammy nominations in 2018 and more than half the songs on Ctrl are now certified Platinum and Gold. Geppi Gems via Library of Congress for use by 360 Magazine

Geppi Collection Opens at LOC

A new exhibition at the Library of Congress explores how comic books have permeated popular entertainment and influenced U.S. culture, highlighting selections from the Stephen A. Geppi Collection that was generously donated to the national library in 2018.

“Geppi Gems” is now open in the Library’s Graphic Arts Gallery through mid-March 2022. A second rotation with different items is planned for spring 2022. The exhibition now features 33 items from the collection of more than 3,000 cartoons, comic books and related items in the Geppi Collection.

The wide range of rare comics on view span genres including Walt Disney’s iconic characters, westerns, superheroes, science fiction, horror, sports, music and entertainment.

Popeye, Superman, Wonder Woman, Black Panther — some cartoon characters have become both instantly and internationally recognizable, but they didn’t get their start on television or in the movies, but rather on the pages of newspapers and comic books,” said Sara Duke, curator of popular and applied graphic arts, who wrote about the exhibition on the Library’s Picture This blog.

The exhibition explores the role of early newspapers in the development of comic books and characters. As a nod to the collection’s founder, the exhibition also represents the major themes of the former Geppi Entertainment Museum in Baltimore, which operated between 2006 and 2018.

“It’s so gratifying to see more of the Geppi Gems collection made available to the public in this exhibition,” Geppi said. “This and future displays will continue to expose new fans to the rich artistic history of pop culture started here in the United States. I’m more excited than ever and want to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to my dear friend and Librarian of Congress, Carla Hayden, for her vision, as well as the curators and conservators who have worked so hard to make this possible.”

Over the years, Geppi has amassed one of the largest individual collections of vintage comic books and pop culture artifacts in the world.

Highlights of the exhibition include:

  • Popeye in an early syndicated newspaper comic strip from 1931 when the character’s popularity was exploding.
  • Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck during their rise in popularity as animated characters. Walt Disney understood the role of marketing his characters so that they would be instantly recognizable.
  • Annie Oakley, Wyatt Earp and Steve McQueen as characters from America’s Wild West translated from Western novels to radio, comics, film and television.
  • Superman’s history with Action Comics and the birth of the comic book superhero from DC Comics, along with examples from the history of Batman and Robin and Wonder Woman.
  • Black Panther’s self-titled debut from Marvel Comics in 1977 and the story of Captain America in The Avengers before he became one of the most popular comic book characters today.
  • Science fiction’s history in comics with examples of dramatic visual expression, including Weird Science and Science and Invention.
  • Terrifying creatures of horror that were brought to visual life through comics in magazines like Creepy.
  • Sports as represented through comic books and cartoon art, including Babe Ruth Sports.
  • Pop culture represented in posters, magazines and collectibles promoting musicians through graphic art, including Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, The Jackson 5 and more.

Free timed entry tickets are available for visitors to the Library’s Thomas Jefferson Building on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 4

p.m. To plan a visit and reserve tickets, go to loc.gov/visit. Tickets will be released on a rolling 30-day basis. For online versions of the Library’s exhibitions, visit loc.gov/exhibits.

Geppi is the founder, owner, chairman and CEO of Geppi Family Enterprises, a Baltimore-based network of pop culture companies including Diamond Comic Distributors, Diamond UK, Gemstone Publishing, E. Gerber, Baltimore Magazine, Diamond International Galleries, Diamond Select Toys, Alliance Game Distributor, Diamond Book Distributors, Hake’s Auctions, Art Asylum, Gentle Giant, Sapphire Studios and the recently acquired Collectible Grading Authority.

Black Panther Issue One

This November, Academy Award-winning writer John Ridley and Marvel’s Stormbreaker artist Juann Cabal launch T’Challa’s next revolutionary chapter in BLACK PANTHER #1! The new era will see secrets from T’Challa’s past coming back to haunt him and threaten the nation of Wakanda. Fresh from returning from his adventures in space, Black Panther receives an unexpected and urgent message from a Wakandan secret agent. T’Challa must race the clock not only to save his agent, but also to keep his true agenda under wraps. Because if the truth comes out, it could cost T’Challa everything… Fans can get their first glimpse at this historic new launch in the new BLACK PANTHER #1 trailer, featuring never-before-seen artwork.

“It’s a hybrid espionage-Super Hero thriller, but at its core, it’s a love story,” Ridley told The New York Times. “And I don’t mean just romantic love, although there’s some of that as well. It’s love between friends.

“We’re coming out of a summer where we saw Black people fighting for our rights, standing up, fighting in ways that we haven’t had to do in years,” Ridley added. “And it was really important to me after the year we had where we can have these conversations with Black people and we can use words like love and caring and hope and regret and all these really fundamental emotions that everybody has.”

Don’t miss the start of a new Marvel epic when BLACK PANTHER #1 hits stands on November 10!

Pyer Moss First Couture Show WAT U IZ: Historic Tribute To Black Inventors

By: Kai Yeo

“We are an invention inside of an invention. Inside of the creation of race, we made blackness. Uprooted from home and put in a foreign land, we made culture. And when they tried to strip our humanity, we made freedom so tethered to each other that it still shapes the world today.” – Pyer Moss show notes.

Kerby-Jean Raymond’s Pyer Moss label has unveiled his first-ever couture collection. The award-winning designer and creative director is the first Black American designer to be invited to present during Haute Couture Week, a historical achievement made even more successful by making his collection a tribute to Black inventors. All Pyer Moss shows attract interest, but this show had more buzz because of his exclusive invite by France’s Chambre Syndicale to show a collection, with officials in Paris extending the length of Couture Week to accommodate the rescheduled show due to Hurricane Elsa.

The Pyer Moss Couture 1 couture show, WAT U IZ, was opened by the last surviving member of Black Panther leadership and civil rights champion Elaine Brown. The setting was deeply significant: Villa Lewaro, an early 20th century mansion in Irvington, NY, built by Madam CJ Walker. Madam CJ Walker was American’s first self-made female millionaire and her estate served as a gathering place for leaders of the renaissance (her story is also on Netflix). Now, Elaine Brown’s words herald another landmark moment for black culture while celebrating the Black Panther’s 55th Anniversary.

The 28,000-square-foot estate, designed by Vertner Woodson Tandy (the first licensed black architect in New York State, and one of the seven founders of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity at Cornell University), was recently purchased by the New Voices Foundation for an undisclosed amount. The foundation is the nonprofit branch of the New Voices Fund, a $100 million investment fund dedicated to entrepreneurs following in Walker’s footsteps. Both the fund and the foundation were created by Richelieu Dennis, who was seated at the front row at Pyer Moss.

“Where do we go from here? Where does the freedom movement go from here?” activist Elaine Brown opens the show quoting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., but she also seemed to be reflecting on the history being made at the very moment. Jean Raymond, whose shows always entwine his ideas about fashion with those about culture, race, and society, said in an interview that his goal was “to highlight inventions by Black people and show them in a non-traditional way,” involving 3D construction and sculpture.

And so, there was the peanut butter dress, literally a huge, soft sculpted jar honoring George Washington Carver. The stunning roller cape that took two weeks to create, featuring hot rollers from head to toe. Each one wound round and round with strands of fake hair. An air-conditioning unit, a kitchen mop, an old-fashioned mobile phone he remembers his father carrying, a childhood ice cream cone. There was a pastel pink lampshade dress with beaded fringes, a metal folding chair, every single costume a sophisticated work of culture. And there was a refrigerator with magnets that spelled out, “But who invented Black trauma?” Each soft sculpture in the Pyer Moss couture show correlated to an invention on a list that designer Jean-Raymond had seen at the Library of Congress attributed to a Black individual. All the inventions Jean-Raymond chose from to celebrate spoke to his lived experiences, a beautiful show reminiscent of a masquerade ball or art installation.

Jean Raymond talks about paying homage to his Black culture, “I want people to experience Black wealth in not a dirty thing. It is one of several means to an end – this house, inventions, creativity, ingenuity, all of those things are pathways to that sort of economic independence. I’ve said a lot of things at my shows. I’ve talked about mental health, multiple prong approaches to liberation, and this is just one of them.” Richelieu Dennis will help oversee the transition of restoring the villa and making it an incubator and center for Black women artists and women-run businesses. Just as once upon a time the villa was a center for the artists and intellectuals of the Harlem Renaissance, the sculptured garments of Pyer Moss will eventually be part of an exhibit inside Villa Lewaro.

2021 Lexus IS 350 F SPORT

By: Emily Bunn x Vaughn Lowery

360 Magazine took the 2021 Lexus IS 350 F-Sport out for a spin along California’s golden coast. We drove the Grecian Water model- an electric blue color that surely was the star of Hollywood Boulevard. As compared to other luxury sedans, such as a the BMW 3 Series, the Lexus IS provides unrivaled steering feel, safety features, and price. The low to the ground position of the vehicle–30mm wider than its predecessor Lexus model–makes for a dramatic, aggressive, and sleek reimagined design. A pure sports sedan, the 2021 Lexus IS 350 F-Sport promises peak performance, craftsmanship, and technological innovation.

The intriguing, proactive layout of the Lexus IS 350 F-Sport inspired 360 Magazine to revamp our LA workspace to reflect the vehicle’s beautiful interior and exterior. During our trip, we drove the Lexus IS to several Home Depots as we worked on renovations. Thanks to the agile driving ability of the IS, we were able to get to our destination smoothly in a matter of minutes. The lean design of the Lexus IS allowed us to easily maneuver into tight parking spaces and around busy corners. The ferocious agility and powerful drive of the vehicle made for a comfortable journey as picked up revamping supplies.

We reimagined our LA location to exude sophistication and innovation, as the Lexus IS represents. With new shelving units and countertops, modern metallic flooring, a chandelier with LED lights, repainted matte countertops, and installed bejeweled glass knobs, the 360 team transformed our area into a completely redesigned and elevated workspace. To maximize the space’s function, we also added surrounded sound, subwoofers, and a TV. Just like the ergonomically compact and versatile construction of the Lexus IS, 360 Magazine’s refurbished LA workspace reflects how we will efficiently utilize the space for future events, dinners, and live performances. For trips to Home Depot, work commutes, grocery runs, cruises along the Golden Coast, and more, the Lexus IS 350 F-Sport is the ideal vehicle.

Design

The Lexus IS 350 F-Sport was designed in tandem with BMW and Lexus, mixing the utmost quality of German and Japanese engineering. Some of the most noteworthy design features of the F-Sport include heated and ventilated power sears for the driver and passenger, as well as a shift knob and hand-selected leather-trimmed steering wheel and interior trim. Fine accent stitching details car’s the dashboard, creating a very coordinated and sleek ambiance in the vehicle. The large, circular air vents in the car are reminiscent of jet turbines and make every drive in the Lexus a daring adventure to embark upon.

The IS 350 F-Sport has all-wheel drive abilities that grant enhanced traction on many surfaces and conditions. Carpet floor mats lets passengers climb back into their Lexus with no fear after a day out adventuring. The car’s 19 in staggered-width alloy wheels, with a dark metallic finish, allow drivers to take on any terrain. The IS 350 F-Sport has luxurious F-Sport exterior styling including glossy black accents around the grille, lower rocker, and rear lip spoiler and a singular tailpipe that stylishly tapers to mere centimeter in the center. Following the perimeters of the vehicle’s lustrous trim, passenger’s eyes are led up to the power tilt-and-slide moonroof.

While we loved cruising in style in the Grecian Blue model, the vehicle also comes in seven other stunning shades: Ultra White, Iridium, Atomic Silver, Cloudburst Gray, Caviar, Infrared, and Ultrasonic Blue Mica 2.0.

Marvel Launches New Black Panther Series

MARVEL UNVEILS NEW BLACK PANTHER COMIC BOOK SERIES LAUNCHING THIS AUGUST! Academy Award-winning writer John Ridley and artist Juann Cabal launch T’Challa’s next revolutionary chapter this summer!

As Black Panther’s intergalactic saga makes its stunning conclusion next Wednesday, Marvel Comics has revealed that the next thrilling chapter for T’Challa, Wakanda, and the Marvel Universe will begin this summer! Officially announced today in The New York Times in an exclusive interview, Academy Award-winning writer John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) will helm Marvel’s next Black Panther comic book series alongside Marvel’s Stormbreaker artist Juann Cabal (Guardians of the Galaxy), beginning with Black Panther #1 this August.

Building from the epic last chapter of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ groundbreaking multi-year Black Panther run in Black Panther #25 next week, Ridley will kick off an action-packed espionage story that will impact everything in T’Challa’s life and have ramifications for the entire Marvel Universe!

In this new ongoing series, secrets from T’Challa’s past have come back to haunt him. Fresh from returning from his adventures in space, Black Panther receives an unexpected and urgent message from a Wakandan secret agent. T’Challa must race the clock not only to save his agent, but also to keep his true agenda under wraps. Because if the truth comes out, it could cost T’Challa everything…

It’s a hybrid espionage-superhero thriller, but at its core, it’s a love story, Ridley told The New York Times. And I don’t mean just romantic love, although there’s some of that as well. It’s love between friends.

We’re coming out of a summer where we saw Black people fighting for our rights, standing up, fighting in ways that we haven’t had to do in years, Ridley added. And it was really important to me after the year we had where we can have these conversations with Black people and we can use words like love and caring and hope and regret and all these really fundamental emotions that everybody has.

Don’t miss Black Panther’s historic moment in Black Panther #25 next week, and be sure to pick up Black Panther #1 when it hits stands this August! Stay tuned to Marvel’s website for more details.
