Vinexpo Paris

Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris is returning to Paris Expo Porte de Versailles from 14 to 16 February 2022 for its third edition, marking the resumption of in-person events for the wine and spirits industry. By offering a comprehensive and inspiring range of products with a powerful international resonance, the Vinexposium group’s flagship event is reiterating its commitment to becoming THE global benchmark and a key date for trade members.

Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris will be the first major international event of 2022 and it marks the resumption of full-scale tastings. Highly awaited by the global wine and spirits industry for the variety of products on show and its business meetings, the event is now focusing on promoting attendance by key buyers, including those from outside the EU who are showing a strong interest in the exhibition.

Over three days, more than 2,800 exhibitors will convene in Paris to showcase their latest vintage, their flagship products and rare bottlings, all of them delicious pours to be shared with connoisseurs from around the globe. The desire by French wine marketing boards to join forces by being stakeholders in the event is stronger than ever and the event will group together all of France’s wine regions, alongside an impressive line-up of international wine regions. In total, representatives from 23 countries will celebrate the reunion of the wine and spirits community in the heart of the French capital next February.

The event, which will cover four halls at the entrance to the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles exhibition centre (halls 3, 4, 5 and 6), will cater as much to the small winegrowers as to the major international brands. Household names such as François Lurton, Gérard Bertrand, E. Guigal, Maison M. Chapoutier, Domaine Paul Mas, Castel Frères, Maison Sichel, Bernard Magrez, Grands Chais de France and Gh Martel & Cie Champagne will be attending, alongside less prominent vineyards well worth discovering, such as the Aquitaine Independent Winegrowers and family-run properties like Vins Chevron Villette, Vignobles Vellas and Château Castigno, to name a few. Hall 5, set aside for international producers, will welcome wines of Luxembourg, Advantage Austria, Tenuta Lamborghini, Wines of Lebanon, Wines of Germany, Cesari, Carpineto, Consorzio Di Tutela Della Doc Prosecco, Consorzio Tutela del vino Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco, Gaja, J. Garcia Carrion, Viniportugal Wines Of Portugal, Hammeken Cellars and Flechas De Los Andes, for example.

Alongside wines in Hall 3, the Be Spirits by Vinexpo area and its huge Infinite bar will bring together spirits from all backgrounds, ranging from micro-distilleries through to well-known brands. Attendees will include the Armagnac marketing board BNIA, Calvados Château du Breuil, Cognac Lheraud, Distillerie Warenghem, Gin de Binche, Glasgow Whisky, La Martiniquaise, Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Association and Distilleria Bertagnolli

“Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris is above all an event that brings people together and creates a sense of community. People welcome their clients there from a wide range of backgrounds to give international exposure to local, innovative products, from the little treasures to the prominent growths. Paris will host a celebration in 2022 and we are very much looking forward to being reunited with everyone once again”, stresses Rodolphe Lameyse, CEO of Vinexposium.

HENDRICK’S GIN × KATZ’S DELICATESSEN

HENDRICK’S GIN AND KATZ’S DELICATESSEN LAUNCH FIRST EVER GIN-INSPIRED PICKLED CUCUMBERS

The Delightfully Peculiar Gin & Iconic Deli Come Together To Create An Unusually Spirited,  Limited-Edition Pickle

Hendrick’s Gin and New York City icon, Katz’s Delicatessen, are proud to announce their first ever collaboration for the launch of the limited-edition Hendrick’s Gin and Katz’s Delicatessen Gin-Inspired Pickled Cucumbers. Hendrick’s, a most unusual gin, and Katz’s Delicatessen, with over five generations of pickling experience, are uniting cocktail connoisseurs and pickle aficionados through a first-of-its-kind gin half-sour pickle: a delectable fusion of gin botanicals and cucumbers.

The marvelous invention draws inspiration from a case of mistaken identity between Hendrick’s key ingredient, the cucumber, and its pickled cousin. What started as an outlandish April Fool’s joke, quickly became a reality, as Hendrick’s Gin and a jar of pickles have more in common than one may have thought. Both Hendrick’s and Katz’s have brought together their unique and secret magisterial recipes to create this unusual medley of botanicals and cucumber, resulting in a radically new kind of pickle, designed to be enjoyed with your favorite pastrami sandwich and refreshing gin cocktail.

Jake Dell, Owner of Katz’s Delicatessen, and Hendrick’s Master Distiller Ms. Lesley Gracie spent countless hours concocting and evaluating flavor profiles and mixtures. Connecting virtually from across the pond to compare results, the masterminds swapped notes and ideas on how to perfect the recipe.

“The signature expression of Hendrick’s Gin is the curious yet marvelous infusion of our eleven botanicals in addition to rose and cucumber,” highlights Gracie. “Naturally, pickles, the cousin of our beloved cucumber, effortlessly blend with our gin’s rich and intricate spirit. The botanicals take on remarkably compatible sensory characteristics when pickled and we’re relishing this opportunity to collaborate on such an exciting endeavor.”

Much like Hendrick’s Gin, the process for creating Hendrick’s Gin and Katz’s Delicatessen Gin-Inspired Pickled Cucumbers was intricate and detailed, with a two-step brining process taking over 72 hours.  Katz’s unique recipe features whole juniper berries and cubeb berries to best incorporate the botanicals of the gin into its half-sour brine.

“To create this particular pickle concoction, we experimented with a variety of botanicals to marry the unique flavor profiles of Hendrick’s and the Katz’s half-sour pickle. Ultimately, the key to creating the distinct and balanced taste of the pickles was emphasizing coriander in the brine, a common ingredient in Katz’s pickles & Hendrick’s Gin,” says Dell.

Hendrick’s Gin and Katz’s Delicatessen Gin-Inspired Pickled Cucumbers will be available for purchase at Katz’s Delicatessen for $14.95 per quart shipping nationwide for a limited time only beginning September 27. Sign up for the launch to secure a spot on their email list to be notified as soon as they become available and purchase a jar for you and yours. The pickles will also be a special menu item at Katz’s Deli beginning September 27, while supplies last. Note:  the cucumbers continue to pickle while in the jar, so it is recommended that they are consumed within 5-6 days.

“The Hendrick’s Gin and Katz’s Delicatessen Gin-Inspired Pickled Cucumbers are as perfect of an accompaniment to a Katz’s Pastrami sandwich as an ingredient in our signature Hendrick’s cocktails,” says Vance Henderson, Hendrick’s Gin National Ambassador. “To bathe the palate in taste and wonderment, we were inspired by the light and alluring notes of the pickles to create an unexpected and refreshingly bright take on classic cocktails.”

Great Cocktails Start at the Beginning: Highclere Castle Gin

By: Mary Holden

Let this tale begin as it began—with ancestors and an email. In the middle is the promise of delicious refreshment. The conclusion of this tale is filled with cheers to moderation, responsible entrepreneurship, and a respect for the ways in which history enlightens and entertains.

Adam von Gootkin, CEO and co-founder of Highclere Castle Spirits, is a self-described Anglophile whose soul is steeped in history. If he could time travel, he’d choose to go to ancient Rome…with a hope to have a bit of gold in his pocket. But, in 2016, he went to Highclere Castle—via an email.

Having transitioned out of the music industry (he’d run a recording studio that ran away with his personal energy), von Gootkin capitalized on his known interests (brewing beer, vinifying wine, and distilling spirits) and his then-unknown ancestral tendencies. After several years of successful distilling, he learned the history of a speakeasy owned by his great-grandfather and a well-known distillery located in New England run by his ancestors in the 1800s.

So…what was it that inspired von Gootkin to write an email to Lord Carnarvon to inquire about partnering on a new spirit venture? Only ‘the universe’ knows for sure, but he did. The email arrived during office renovations, and Lady Carnarvon remembers that Lord Carnarvon, “came down, waving this piece of paper saying, ‘What do you see? I think I might get back to him.’ And this was Adam’s email. It’s amazing what happens from these extraordinary coincidental beginnings.”

Weeks later, Adam and his wife Regina were amazed to visit Highclere and surprised to enter into an amicable and genuine friendship that led to an extraordinary partnership.

Rare tobacco is another one of his interests, and that’s why (during the development of the gin) von Gootkin got in touch with his friend, cigar maker Nicholas Melillo of Foundation Cigar Company. The two came up with (after 25 iterations) a cigar created with Nicaraguan tobacco specifically for Highclere Castle’s brand. Cue an image of Winston Churchill showing up in your imagination with a signature cigar between two fingers of his right hand, even though von Gootkin believes, “there’s nothing more beautiful than a female smoking a cigar!”

Developing the gin was based on the genius that occurred when von Gootkin and the Carnarvon’s put their minds together to create—and perfect—a gin to represent the hospitality and entertainment that’s been practiced for generations at Highclere Castle. Like the cigar, after 25 iterations, the gin was born.

What’s different about Highclere Castle Gin? While it includes notes common to most gin products: juniper, citrus, and certain spices, Highclere Castle Gin is finished with the addition of oats, post-distillation. These oats have been farmed on the estate grounds for generations to support the thoroughbred horses raised there. The gin debuted in 2019 and has won over 31 international awards due to its elegant taste.

Elevating the moment,” says von Gootkin, and keeping the standards of elegance and beauty,” is the purpose of a refreshing cocktail. “We’ve liquified that with this gin.” When he’s celebrating happiness and enjoying elegance, von Gootkin enjoys Highclere Castle Gin on the rocks with a twist of orange peel and a sprig of rosemary. He also enjoys the way champagne parties in a glass with the gin in a cocktail known as the British 75.

In addition to garnering success as a ‘spiritual entrepreneur, von Gootkin is the author of Living Proof: Onyx Moonshine’s Journey to Revive the American Spirit. With a foreword written by coach Mike Ditka, and chapters titled, “Rock Bottom to Bottoms Up: Why Falling Behind is Key to Moving Forward,” and “Socially Conscious Commerce: How Your Business Can Make the World a Better Place,” his words distill both his and the wisdom of, his ancestors.

The history of Highclere Castle provided the story of “Downton Abbey,” as well as the space for the invention of a luxurious liquor to pair with good foods, great people, and harmonious surroundings (even if we must match our surroundings with others via screens). History entertains us by reminding us to balance darkness with light, evil with good, falsity with truth, and grief with joy.

In that balance is the wisdom of moderation.

Moonbathe with Hendrick’s for 1st Full Moon of the Year

Hendrick’s Gin is proud to unveil Hendrick’s Lunar, the second limited edition release from Master Distiller Ms. Lesley Gracie’s Cabinet of Curiosities. Instilled with botanicals that flourish below the light of the moon, Hendrick’s Lunar Gin will be released in the States on January 28, when the first full moon of the new year occurs. To honor the momentous occasion, Hendrick’s is inviting cocktail connoisseurs and star gazers alike to enjoy what is “quite likely the world’s first Lunar gin” as part of a moonbathing ritual to embrace the New Year and leave behind the old.

According to Vance Henderson, Hendrick’s Ambassador to the United States, “Hendrick’s Lunar offers a delicate balance of gentle spice and subtle floral notes with a soft citrus finish.” Henderson recommends it as “the perfect gin to savor casually at home or during starry nights with friends.”

“An activity practiced by esteemed members of Hendrick’s Gin Palace in Girvan, Scotland, moonbathing is the polar, or rather the lunar, opposite of sunbathing,” explains Henderson. “Yet instead of baking under the harsh light of the sun with barely any clothes on, one can dress stylishly below the moonlight, which supports celestial contemplation and many claim provides the ideal ambiance for rejuvenation and a renewal of the mind and body.”

For newbies to moonbathing (and let’s face it, who isn’t?), Hendrick’s is providing a how-to video, along with a full moon video stream as part of its Streaming Service for those who prefer to moonbathe inside the comfort of their home. Additionally, the gin maker is offering a full moonbathing kit, which includes moon goggles, a lunar blanket and moonscreen lotion (rated MPF 28). The kit is available for purchase on Hendrick’s Tiny Shop to enjoy moonbathing on any night of the year.

“The first full moon of the year brings new beginnings,” Henderson continued. ““and by using typical twilight hours using them for restorative moonbaths accompanied by a Lunar cocktail, we can potentially soothe the demeanor of the world, or at least a tiny proportion identified as the ‘nocturnal curious.’”

Not surprisingly, another advocate for the powers of moonlight is Hendrick’s Master Distiller, Ms. Lesley Gracie, who firmly believes that the botanicals she cultivates in her two distillery hothouses take on entirely different sensory characteristics under the influence of moonlight. It was one particular evening, tending to her hothouses in the still of night, when she was inspired to bottle the cosmic sensation of being at peace with nature under the moon and stars – thus creating this unconventional gin.

Launching in January 2021 throughout the U.S., the new Lunar bottle retains the distinctive Hendrick’s shape, evocative of Victorian apothecary jars. The label coloring is a sophisticated, deep blue reflective of the night sky and includes curious celestial imagery that conjures a feeling of imbibing under a moonlit sky.

Hendrick’s Lunar was first released in the UK in January 2019 and will now be offered in most high-end spirits retailers within the U.S. for a limited time only. It is also available online through select e-commerce partners for delivery on-demand to states where legal. Lunar is bottled at 43.4% ABV with a $39.99 SRP.

Tales of the Cocktail Foundation 13th Annual Most Imaginative Bartender Semifinalists Presented by BOMBAY SAPPHIRE® Gin

Top 36 Bartenders Stir Creativity Vie for $25,000 Creative Grant and Mentorship by Creative Visionary

Hamilton, Bermuda (September 3, 2019) – Tales of the Cocktail Foundation announces today the semifinalists of the 13th Annual Most Imaginative Bartender Competition (MIB Competition) presented by BOMBAY SAPPHIRE® Gin. The esteemed cocktail MIB Competition, which seeks out mixologists at the forefront of the industry and provides them with a platform to let their imagination and creativity shine, will kick off the regional stage this September through three (3) competitions held in Nashville (Central), Philadelphia (East), and Portland (West). The 36 semifinalists from across North America will vie for a spot in the top 12 and advance to the finals in February 2020.  The MIB Competition will be held in Chicago, the hometown of the 2018 Most Imaginative Bartender, Carley Gaskin. Driven by the belief that everyone is born creative, BOMBAY SAPPHIRE is introducing the Canvas Challenge to this year’s program. The new challenge will task the top 12 finalists to discover their artistic potential and showcase their creativity for a chance to win a $25,000 grant prize and a mentorship by a creative visionary.

According to BOMBAY SAPPHIRE Gin Brand Director Tom Spaven, the new challenge is a way to encourage bartenders to take their creativity to the next level as he notes: “Each year, the Most Imaginative Bartender competition brings together a group of boundary-pushing bartenders who use BOMBAY SAPPHIRE as the ultimate tool to stir creativity in a glass. Through the incredible work of past participants, we realize the program is not just a competition, but a forum for expression across many different creative mediums. I’m excited to see how this year’s semifinalists will bring the industry to new heights and explore their passions outside of mixology”.

Throughout September, the semifinalists will participate in an invigorating two-day program, aimed to encourage bartenders to stir creativity outside of the traditional lines of the industry. On the first day, all semifinalists will present their masterpiece in a glass to a panel of judges. Following the MIB Competition portion, the program is introducing a new aspect in an effort to encourage self-expression, in which the semifinalists will participate in an educational activity geared towards exploring new creative mediums. Upon completion, the regional winners will head to England in October for an immersive gin discovery tour at the home of the brand’s BREEAM award-winning distillery, Laverstoke Mill. During the week-long tour all finalists will participate in educational programming that will help prepare them for the finale in February 2020.  In addition to the prizes awarded to the final winner, all 12 finalists will collaborate with PUNCH Media for a special cocktail book to debut in 2020.

The 2018 champion Carley Gaskin shared a few words of inspiration for the semifinalists, stating: “The Most Imaginative Bartender Competition encouraged me to explore new forms of self-expression through mixology, while introducing me to a wealth of invaluable resources within the industry. Stay in Your Own Private Castle with Wilderness Scotland

The Emerald Isle and Scottish Highlands are brimming with iconic landmarks (a.k.a tourist traps). But what about those who want more than a pint of Guinness or a bite of haggis? Wilderness  Scotland  (Europe’s No. 1 Rated Adventure Travel Company) and sister company  Wilderness  Ireland  offer Tailor Made trips designed by locals and delivered by local legends—making them a great way to discover the essence of a place in a way that few visitors have access to.

From enjoying a moonlight paddle in Yeats Country—home to unparalleled star gazing—to uncovering the secrets of the Loch Ness Monster to rappelling off sea stacks, Wilderness’ Tailor Made adventures unearth the true character of the destination.

Forget everything you thought you knew about Ireland and Scotland with these one-of-a-kind experiences:

Go Glamping in Yeats Country

On a camping expedition in Sligo, Ireland, hike the breathtaking lakes, mountains, beaches and waterfalls that once inspired many of the great works of the Nobel Prize winning writer, W. B. Yeats. As the sun sets, hop in a kayak for a nighttime paddle on the “Lake Isle of Inisfree” to a private island. Leap onto the sand where a forested paradise awaits, along with a night of glamping in one of the world’s premier stargazing destinations. But first, enjoy wood-fired pizzas al fresco, while a local expert shares in the tales and legends of the area.

Hunt for Nessie with a Career Monster Tracker

While Scotland is known for its legends and fables, none are quite as famous as the Loch Ness Monster. While considered by some as folklore, the storied creature has been likened by scientists to a plesiosaur that dates back to the end of the last ice age. To unearth the history of the mystical creature, meet Adrian Shine, a naturalist and researcher, for a private boat ride as he shares his insider knowledge after years of studying Nessie. You’ll fly across the waters of Loch Ness, one of the largest and deepest expanses of water in the UK, as you search for this elusive creature.

Spend the Night in Your Own Private Castle

Nestled in the countryside on 500-acres lies a palace straight out of a fairytale—Aldourie Castle—and it’s easily bookable for a private rental for you and your closest 20 friends with Wilderness Scotland. This rare experience is set on the shores of Loch Ness, where well-tended courtyards, 16th-century gardens and horseback riding can be found as you stroll vast woodland grounds. For a closer look at the garden’s soaring pergolas, meet with your private guide for a tour, while keeping eyes peeled for deer, sea eagles and even basking sharks—the world’s second-largest fish. Stop for a tour at a world-famous malt whisky distillery to sip the Scottish ‘Water of Life,’ or hop in a sea kayak to observe the ruins of nearby Urquhart Castle from the water.

Cast a Line with an Expert Ghillie

Grab your waders and wellies for an unforgettable fishing experience with one of Scotland’s most knowledgeable fishing expeditioners. Take to the Highlands to uncover the locals’ best-kept fishing spots along the River Tay in Perthshire. Here, anglers can find the country’s most iconic species—Atlantic salmon—along with pike, rainbow trout and pollock. Cheers to the catch of the day with a glass of distilled whisky on the riverbank.

Forage for Juniper to Make Your Own Gin

While whisky may be the official drink of Ireland, gin is also a popular local tipple. In Ireland’s Ancient East, you can learn the complicated science behind every bottle of Irish-made gin. Head into the forest with a naturalist guide to forage for fresh ingredients, such as juniper and other herbs. Then, head to an exclusive gin school to distill a bottle with your own herbs—making for a memorable souvenir.

Climb a Sea Stack High Above the Atlantic

Head to what Ireland’s Donegal County calls “the most climbable rocks in Ireland” to unearth a secret spot where you’ll be suspended above the Atlantic waves for an adrenaline-fueled climb. But first, visit one of the area’s most remote spots to meet the local Gaelic-speaking characters who call the area home. They’ll guide you through the history of the separation between Northern and Southern Ireland, the basic knowledge of the Gaelic language and their local traditions. Then, you’ll be whisked away to a tiny island, where you’ll climb to the top of a sea stack, then rappel down the steep cliffside high above ocean waves.

North Pole Pop-Up Bar

A pop-up bar will open at the North Pole and offer free gin for life

Finnish Arctic Blue Gin is opening the northernmost pop-up bar “Arctic Bar” at the North Pole on April 17th. Any explorer courageous enough to reach it will earn free gin for life.

Situated at N90°E0°, the Arctic Bar will be open for one day on the 17th of April and gift anyone who shows up a lifetime supply of award-winning Arctic Blue Gin. The Arctic Bar will be the northernmost bar in the world, topping the Bar in Hotel Tulpan in Svalbard, Norway.

Why the North Pole?

“To survive here, you need to be a little mad, and quite a lot tougher. Just like the wild bilberries we season our gin with, that fight their way through the frozen earth just to survive. It’s not easy, but you can truly taste their zest for life.” says Mikko Spoof, Co-Founder and Brand Director of Arctic Brand Group.

“And just like the bilberries, our ideas have to fight through a dark and frosty element to survive.” Continues Mr. Spoof, “We believe actions are more impactful than words in telling stories. That’s why we will open a bar at the North Pole. The customers can enjoy free gin during the pop-up day and even better than that: they will get a lifetime supply of Arctic Blue Gin delivered to their front door. ”

The Finnish expedition will ride on the North Pole for a week in very harsh conditions. The thickness of the ice may vary from a few centimeters to a few meters and the temperature can even drop down to -40°C/F.

The expedition to N90°E0° will start today as Mikko Spoof and other three mad explorers embark on an adventure with the beloved gin to open a bar amongst polar bears, walruses, and seals. If you find yourself at N90°E0° on April 17th, you will get a free supply of Arctic Blue Gin for the rest of your life, or at least as long as the bilberries survive and are not extinct due to climate change.

The team is headed by the experienced polar expert and photographer Poppis Suomela. Photographer Valtteri Hirvonen and director Otso Tiainen will also join the extreme trip and film a short documentary on the effects of global warming.
