The 2021 Lamborghini Huracan EVO RWD Spyder stands with a sleek and comfortable design, making it prepared to pull up at any occasion and has seen enormous amounts of positive feedback for its accessibility across all fields. It is the newest open-top evolution of the Huracan range, first debuting at the 2014 Geneva auto show. This model is the first rear wheel drive Lamborghini in its generation and only one up for purchase at this moment.

Lamborghini’s Italian-produced machines are known for their contemporary look, intended to give users an adrenaline inducing experience. Founded in 1963 with the intent of producing luxurious, race-inspired, and timeless grand touring cars to give companies like Ferrari competition, Lamborghini serves sales worldwide and has been increasing revenue with their highly customizable vehicles. This stylish and top performance convertible is now one of the most enticing ones of its kind on the market right now.

Design

The shape of the car is aerodynamic and is cutting edge in speed and power. The car hugs the ground with its black rims, making for ease at clawing corners and whipping the bends at top speed. The 103.1-inch wheelbase and 20-inch forged Narvi rims, determines that this car is made for the track.

Sporting five different metallics, the linework makes each one feel unique. The aluminum and thermoplastic resin exterior comes in five different colors and are listed as follows; Arancio Livrea, Arancio Dac, Giallo Clarus, Verde Shock, and Celeste Fedra. The layout of the car is smooth from the front and angular from the side. The tail end of the side body inverts itself to give it a chiseled triangular shape that is sophisticated and energetic.

Power

The rear-wheel drive allows drifting on turns and requires more input than an all-wheel drive, but the calibration is very controllable. Equipped with the new Performance Traction Control System (P-TCS) computed directly for its rear-wheel drive make of the Huracan EVO and delivers torque even during the phase for realignment after drifting or side-slipping.

The 413 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 rpm allows for emerging technology, having the vehicle recognize its orientation crossed with the driver input. Its engine is a 5.2 liter, naturally aspirated V-10 with a seven-speed LDF dual-clutch transmission. These components are what make the car top its highest speed of 201 mph and gives it a 3.5 second acceleration from 0 to 62 mph.

Tech

In the cockpit, music and call apps can be accessed on an 8.4 inch touch screen in the center console of the front seats, easily reachable from the right-hand side of the driver. It also comes with bluetooth and Amazon Alexa setup which allows for in-car voice control and is reflective of convenience for communications while on the road. The ‘Lamborghini Sensonum’ audio package features a 390 watts system, 10-channel amplifier, and 10 speakers throughout the cabin. Not to mention there are additional USB cables located behind the armrests of the seats.

At about 128 decibels, you can almost hear the backfires over a mile away, satisfying the vociferous car enthusiasts. It cannot be revved in park, but putting the car in sport or corsa, while pulling on both paddles can make an exploding resonation while standing still.

Safety

The car’s configuration and low elevation from the ground allows for optimum momentum and a better ride. If finding yourself in a situation where the car does flip, detonating rods erupt from the crown of the car meant to shield the driver from the ground in an event of hurling over.

ABS and driveline traction control the cars stability for deceleration and acceleration, which are exceptionally important for drastic pace changes. The race inspired seats with carbon fiber upholstery, plants you firmly on take offs and inspires soaring velocity.

Conclusion

This fighter jet pulls in at around $273k U.S. MSRP, which is not too steep of a price for all the extras and the ability to own a supercar. From leisure to exhibition for any high-level executive, celebrity, or youthful trendsetter, it is a beautiful addition to a garage or flaunted in any environment.

NEW GEN LEXUS NX

Overview

Lexus NX is one of the most popular luxury compact SUVs in the United States.

The 2022 Lexus NX model has brought us two unprecedented features: 1) the all-new Plug-In Hybrid Electric (450h+) and 2) the all-new Lexus multimedia interface.

As of late, 360 MAGAZINE was invited to Phoenix to attend the release of the all-new Lexus NX. Its appeal will foster youth, technology, and multiculturalism.

Upon arrival, the team checked into the Arizona Biltmore, a Waldorf Astoria Resort (also part of Hilton). The grounds boast lush scenery and majestic mountains as a backdrop. For nearly a century, the lodge has played a prominent role in its habitat. Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural style offers a generous splash of Hollywood glamor.

With history worth of noting, the Biltmore was opened by brothers Warren McArthur, Jr. and Charles McArthur with John McEntee Bowman on February 23, 1929. The land spans across thirty-nine acres with 700 guest rooms. Amenities include eight outdoor pools, a 92-foot slide with a swim up bar, seven tennis courts, two golf courses and seven restaurants. There is also a fitness center, a children’s camp, a play area, as well as a full-service spa (fee not included).

Services at Tierra Luna Spa were remarkable, creating a place of sensory adventure. Within its walls, arid curative properties have been exploited in a variety of memorable experiences. Spa treatments focused on desert plants, cosmic connectivity, and dynamic recovery.

Performance

When stepping foot into the driver’s seat of the newly designed vehicle, enthusiasts can instantly notice a lower sense of gravity, thus enhancing overall handling and making it appear more aggressive. Moreover, the 2022 NX 350 model has been upgraded to a 2.4L turbo. Thanks to the integrated 8-speed transmission, the car was able to enjoy a smoother riding experience.

This trim level has an input of 275 hp with 317 pound-feet of torque, pushing 0-60mph in a time of 6.6 seconds. It’s over a half-second faster than the last model. These are impressive performances for a compact SUV in its market segment. Not to mention, it gets a combined estimate of 25 mpg.

In addition, the first-ever NX 250 features a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine with start/stop function and an eight-speed transmission. The NX 250 model includes FWD and AWD options and a combined MPG estimated by the EPA of 28. The SUV is also capable of producing 203 horsepower and 184lb-ft of torque. Since it is a lower-level version than NX 350, the 0-60 mph comes to 8.2 seconds for the FWD version and 8.6 seconds for AWD.

Design

The most noticeable difference of its makeover is the signature spindle grille. While maintaining the overall skeleton of the incumbent, the mouth has become pouty and polished. Furthermore, the newly introduced L-E-X-U-S rear badging rests under the continuous tail-lamp. Say goodbye to the Toyota-like emblem on its boot. The lateral profile, at first glance, closely resembles the current model, but this is not the case. The length, width and height of the body are respectively 4660/1865/1640mm and the wheelbase is 2690 mm. In comparison with the current model, the length and width have increased by 20mm, and the wheelbase has increased by 30mm.
Taking a peek inside, the redesign of the cabin will completely hypnotize you. The new NX uses the Tazuna cockpit concept to communicate more directly and efficiently between the driver and the vehicle. The standard 9.8-inch touch panel can be upgraded to 14 inches. The infotainment unit is considerably taller than the center console, and the edges and corners have an elegant diamond shape. What makes this vehicle more intuitive than its predecessors are the steering commands that are imitated on the head-up display of the windshield. Overall, this vehicle screams ergonomically for drivers and larger passengers with enough space for four to sit comfortably. In addition, Lexus offers a panoramic moonroof that allows extra light to spread through its corridors, making stargazing more accessible than ever. At night, up to 64 selected colors of ambient light can be seen in footwells, center console and door panels.

Technology

The revamped NX marks the introduction of a brand-new Lexus multimedia platform that outperforms its current system, meeting customers’ priority for fast, intuitive on-board connectivity. Operation is as simple as using a tablet, allowing drivers to stay connected to the Lexus interface on an ongoing basis. There is wireless integration of Apple Car Play and Android Auto, Voice Assistant, cloud-enabled navigation with Google Points of Interest (POI), on aerial updates and Digital Key available. Additionally, the vehicle provides integrated streaming from Apple Music and Amazon Music. And their premium audio package features a 17-speaker system equipped by Mark Levinson. This 1800-watt high-fidelity pack effortlessly improves compressed audio, spelling out all your favorite lyrics and instruments.

Highlight: First Lexus Plug-In NX 450h+

Historically, Lexus hybrid models have captured more than 23% of their sales. The bold design and signature make the Lexus NX one of the most popular models among Gen Z and Gen Y affluent drivers. According to Koji Sato, Lexus International President and former chief engineer, electrification is already one of the most important goals for Lexus to conquer. With that, the first plug-in Lexus NX 450h+ has now been released.

The NX 450h+ has an EPA estimated range of 36 miles on electricity alone; the lithium-ion battery made this possible. This electrical system equates to a 2.0-liter motor. When combined with the newly developed hybrid, a 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder engine offers an estimated duration of 6.0 seconds from 0 to 60.

Safety

Safety comes first every time, and Lexus knows it. The Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 makes driving an easy task. Other new features like Curve Speed Management and Intersection Support provide a multi-level protection base. Optional Digital Key and Advanced Park on NX 350h and NX 450h+ models make vehicle access and parking a breeze. After all, a digital key is convenient for customers who use their vehicles in car sharing apps such as Turo.

Price

The Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price for each all-new NX are:

– $37,950 for NX 250 FWD

– $39,550 for NX 250 AWD

– $41,550 for NX 350

– $41,050 for NX 350h

– $55,560 for NX 450h+

– All prices listed are exclusive of $1,075 delivery, processing, and handling fee.

Conclusion

The 2022 Lexus NX is a compact luxury SUV that offers an abundance of powertrains, a competitive edge against rivals like the Acura RDX and BMW X3

With the ability to tow kayaks and jet skis, this all-rounder would be great for a summer getaway to the lake. Additionally, mainly due to its petite chassis, it’s a shoo-in for parking in overcrowded urban areas and city centers.

In short, driving comfort and quiet cabins have always been an attribute of the NX; however, now with its sensual silhouette, and gorgeous lines, it’s best described as a dime piece.

Honorable Mention

The Baby Beast: Lexus IS 500 F Sport

Finally, Lexus introduced the IS 500 F Sport model to consumers in the American marketplace. Although the IS is not a brand-new product, it has been readjusted by engineers with a large facelift and power plant. The new IS model is always perfectly balanced, and the Lexus IS 500 is by far the best Lexus IS model proposed to date.

Lexus engineers have always focused on creating high-performing products for the North American market. As a result, this Lexus IS 500 F Sport is the first in its history. It’s in position to rival the AMG C43, Audi S4 and BMW 340i models.

F Sport IS 500 is the highest level of the IS series and comes well-equipped with a throaty quad exhaust, stiffer steering/suspension as well as 472 hp with 395 lb-ft of torque. The 5.0L engine delivers 0 to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds.

Plus, the all-new Lexus IS 500 F Sport has 19-inch wheels and scuff plates.

The partnership between G-SHOCK and Igarashi created the GBX-100KI, which is modeled after the GBX100. Ten Tips for a Whiter, Healthier Smile

There are plenty of occasions where you’d want a gorgeous smile. Birthdays, weddings and graduations are just a few of the celebrations in which you should beam confidently. When looking back on photos, you might feel so much happier knowing you smiled with your whole heart instead of hiding it away.

Luckily, there are quite a few ways you can boost your grin. You should love your smile no matter what it looks like, but you can make it even better with simple tasks and lifestyle changes.

  1. Drink Water 

Water doesn’t leave stains like other liquids, nor is it bad for your health. It can help free your mouth of any food debris left in it, and it’s the best liquid option for your teeth by far. Sugary drinks can increase the rate of tooth decay, while water can contain the fluoride you need to promote healthy teeth. 

Make sure to drink tap water if you want a dose of fluoride. Because it occurs naturally in tap water, it’s easy to get the recommended amount to protect your teeth. You should be aware of the levels of fluoride in your water, though. Too much isn’t a good thing, but too little of it can lead to weaker teeth and more cavities.

  1. Quit Smoking

In addition to being bad for your lungs, smoking can impact your smile by staining your teeth. If you’re smoking often enough or don’t tackle the stains when you can, the pigments can go deeper and root permanently on your teeth.

Smoking can also give you fine lines around your mouth. Procedures such as injecting Botox can help reduce these wrinkles. If you don’t want to undergo a process, quitting smoking now is the best way to reduce the appearance of those lines.

  1. Improve Your Overall Health

Consider your overall health when looking for a way to improve one area of your body. Taking proper care of yourself means you’ll be able to devote more attention to your teeth. 

You’ll also likely feel happier, healthier and more confident in yourself if you focus on more than just your teeth. Adopt healthy habits, like exercising and eating right, and you’ll find that improved oral health will follow.

  1. Watch What You Eat

While sugar is a definite food group to avoid if you want an effortlessly beautiful smile, plenty of other substances can affect your teeth, too. Salty snacks can stick to your teeth. Since there are a lot of starches in processed foods, you’ll likely find more plaque buildup if you eat them constantly. 

Fibrous foods can increase your saliva production, which in turn protects your teeth. Eating foods that are higher in fiber can keep your teeth cleaner and, potentially, whiter. After snacking on any kind of food, make sure you brush your teeth or rinse your mouth with water to rid yourself of anything that remains.

  1. Use the Right Toothbrush

Make sure the toothbrush you use daily is optimized for your teeth. Soft bristles are a great option because you don’t want too much force to affect your tooth enamel and gums. Buying an electric or angled brush can guarantee you can clean your teeth thoroughly.

Many electric toothbrushes have settings for whitening or sensitive teeth. However, they can be expensive, so you might want to opt for an angled brush if you’re on a budget. Make sure the bristles are firm enough to remove debris and plaque from your teeth yet soft enough to treat your enamel and gums with the care they need.

  1. Try at-Home Whitening

Choosing a whitening toothpaste might be the most effective way to treat yellow teeth or stains on a budget. While you have to use it often to work, you should ensure it’s not too abrasive on your teeth. Toothpaste that is too abrasive will break down your enamel, which leaves your teeth vulnerable.

At-home whitening kits can also help you achieve a flawlessly white smile. Different kits may require various steps. Some may include whitening strips you leave on your teeth, while others might require you to use gel. Whichever you choose, make sure to follow the directions to avoid weakening your teeth while whitening them.

  1. Go to Regular Checkups

Make sure to visit your dentist regularly. Periodic cleanings can help you keep a benchmark on your oral health and identify any problems before they escalate. Most insurance plans cover basic cleanings and some treatments, so it could be in your best interest to schedule an appointment sooner rather than later.

You should visit your dentist at least twice a year to keep up with your regular health checkups. Depending on your personal needs, you may have to go more frequently to maintain the smile you love. Routine cleanings mean you shouldn’t have to worry about something out of your control happening inside your mouth.

  1. Limit Alcohol Intake

Wine, along with coffee and tea, has the potential to stain your teeth. Stains can be challenging to remove, but you shouldn’t see much of a problem if you keep your alcoholic intake in check. Staining liquids can be mitigated by using a straw. It can also slow down tooth decay because the liquid won’t be touching your teeth if you do it correctly.

  1. Use the Right Makeup

If you’re worried about yellow teeth ruining your night out, consider wearing lipstick with pink or blue undertones. These colors will make yellow less apparent, so your teeth will appear white even if you might have some discolored areas.

If drawing attention to your teeth in general makes you squeamish, make up for it by playing up other features. Maybe you can add more color to your cheeks, or perhaps you can create a gorgeous eye look that will bring people’s attention elsewhere on your face.

  1. Keep up With Your Hygiene

Brush and floss your teeth daily, if not more than that. You should brush your teeth after you eat a meal. If your toothbrush and toothpaste aren’t available to you after you’ve eaten, consider rinsing your mouth out with water to remove any food debris that’s been left behind.

Keep up with your daily oral hygiene, and you’ll find it’s an easy habit to stick to over time. As long as you work toward it every day, you can follow your routine without even thinking about it.

Four Tips for Putting Together an Outfit

Anyone can throw on some clothing; but putting together an outfit is an entirely different story. A few items may look great separately and then look horrible once you wear them at the same time. Similarly, some items may look boring and plain yet come together to create an amazing outfit.

Some people have a natural eye for fashion and can throw together a runway-ready outfit within minutes, but others may need some tips. If you want to branch out and try new styles, or simply want to learn what goes into a great outfit, then this post is for you.

Determine the occasion

An outfit can only live up to its full potential if it’s in the right environment. For example, an elegant suit may look stunning, but it won’t look stunning at a child’s birthday party – it will simply look out of place.

Similarly, a casual outfit of jeans and a t-shirt can be an outfit on its own, but not for a formal event. Determining the event will give you a starting point for your outfit. For example, if you are going to homecoming, you will need to look at homecoming dresses to find the base of your outfit.

Choose your colors

There are a few things to consider when it comes to the colors of your outfit. The first is your skin tone. Some colors may look better than others because of your skin’s undertone. Click here to learn more about your undertones.

Secondly, which colors do you want to use together? Are you going for a monochromatic look? Maybe a pastel look? Or perhaps a neutral color scheme? There are so many options. If you don’t know where to begin, think about the occasion again. Muted and understated colors are better for professional events than bright and bold colors.

Patterns can make or break an outfit. Some people prefer to use only solid colors, which is fine, but we would recommend still adding some pattern to your outfit by incorporating a scarf or something similar. Recently, mixing patterns has become quite the trend. Sometimes, it results in beautiful, unique outfits. Other times, it could be a bit of a disaster. So, if you’re new to fashion, you may want to stick with a few solid-colored items of clothing, and then one patterned item. However, if you are brave, you can try mixing patterns and prints.

Accessorize

Many people think that clothing is what makes an outfit. And yes, it’s true – clothing does play a huge role in an outfit. But what truly brings it together will be your accessories.

Accessories usually take the form of belts, bags, and jewelry, but makeup and hairstyles can also serve as accessories. If you have a plain outfit, pair it with bold accessories to spice it up. And, of course, if you are wearing a very intense and busy outfit, use classic and basic accessories so that it’s not overwhelming. A black pearl necklace might just be the final touch that your outfit needs.

Best Food Trucks in Chicago

Recently, we compiled a list of a few of the famous food trucks around Chi-Town based on online reviews from Yelp and Google. As well, we received word-of-mouth comments from students attending the University of Chicago. Here’s what we found.

Food truck culture has gotten wildly popular this past year, especially with the pandemic. It’s an easy way to grab good food instead of sitting down at a restaurant, a luxury many of us were not able to afford. Chicago is notorious for having a diverse food scene. Here are some of our favorite food trucks around the city.

The Fat Shallot

Ran by high school sweethearts Sam Barron and Sarah Weitz, The Fat Shallot boasts a variety of well-priced made-to-order sandwiches and sides, with all sandwiches costing you under less than $10. Feeling a little fancy? Give the Truffle BLT a try.

Aztec Daves

Family-run with fresh, homemade Mexican dishes, Aztec Daves is easily one of my favorite food trucks to go to when in the mood for good comfort food. From burritos to tacos, there’s something for everyone. Our recommendation for a good lunch option: The taco special, with three meat or veggie tacos, beans, rice and a drink, coming in at $14.

Cheesie’s

Grilled cheese is an American staple, but if you really think about it, it’s so hard to find a good grilled cheese sandwich. Established in 2011 by Chris Johnshon, he set out to create a truck that offered the kind of grilled cheese you crave. Try the Caprese, an italian twist on the classic grilled cheese, coming in at $9.50.

Piko Street Kitchen

Piko offers a fusion between Mexican and Asian cuisines, with options ranging from tacos to bao to kimchi fried rice. Can’t decide what to get? We recommend the Everything Bowl, with kimchi fried rice, topped with all proteins, veggies and an egg. All that at $14.

Beavers Donuts

Dessert food trucks? So important. For when the craving hits and you just want a quick donut, check out Beavers Donuts. For a medium box of 15 mini donuts, you only pay $8. Make sure to try their signature toppings, especially the Goombah, with Cannoli topping and crumbled pastry shells.

Ranchito Taco Truck

Another classic Mexican food truck. Ranchitos offers a variety of Mexican dishes at very reasonable prices. For only $9.99, you can get a stunning steak burrito. Make sure to also try their elotes, some of the best in Chicago.

Dönermen

With the goal to bring German street food to Chicago, this food truck combines German street dishes with a Turkish twist, creating a marriage of flavors brought to Germany by Turkish immigrants in the 70s. Try the classic CurryWurst with fries, for only $10. They also offer many vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options, so make sure to pass by.

Chicago Pizza Boss

Classic, cheesy, and comforting are the words we use to describe this truck. There’s really no way you could go wrong with pizza, and Chicago Pizza Boss offers a selection of dishes for you to choose from. If you’re a fan of spice, go for the Hell Fire’s Kiss Pizza. At only $14, you get classic base topped with mastro brand imported hot sopressata, wildfire’s hell fire chilli & roasted garlic infused honey. Sounds fantastic, non?

A Sweets Girl

Another one of our favorite dessert food trucks. This truck offers a delicious variety of cupcakes for everyone with a sweet tooth. Anna Wu offers a twist on classic recipes and loves to support charitable causes such as Breast Cancer awareness. Get your sweet tooth satisfied while supporting a cause! We love it. Our choice of cupcake? The matcha cupcake, at only $4.

Bop Bar

Delicious Korean food on wheels. Described as Seoul food for the soul, this truck offers classic Korean dishes as well as more modern twists. Our pick? The bulgogi sandwich, coming in at only $9. A delicious twist on the Korean beef dish for on the go.

At the very top of our list of cannabis-related movies that are a must-see, is Cheech and Chong: Up in Smoke. The first in a trilogy of stoner movies, up in smoke paved the way for stoner movies everywhere. This film was set back in the 1970s and is still hitting hard in the marijuana industry.

Cannabis lovers and stoners will appreciate the oversized joints and the hazy clouds that seem to follow the two lead characters, Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong. Although it was not the first film about stoners, it was definitely one that played out the way for just about every other comedy stoner film and put out the formula for it.

This might have been where the stigma of lazy stoners came from, but it is nothing but comedy and entertainment.

Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle

Released in 2004, Harold and Kumar go to White Castle, is quickly approaching its 20th anniversary. This fantastic film is the epitome of stoners in film. The plot revolves around two men on a quest to find the best burger possible.

With a cameo from Neil Patrick Harris as an ecstasy addict and the two leads being stoners, it’s no wonder that the first question they asked is something that any stoner might have asked once before; didn’t we come here on a cheetah?

This is yet another hysterically comedic film that follows the outline of stereotypical potheads. It is comical and very enjoyable for those looking for a good laugh.

Half Baked

Moving on down the list, next in line we have the film Half Baked, which can be seen as a play on words as when someone is high it can colloquially be referred to as being baked. This 90s stoner comedy is a must-see if you are looking for a good laugh.

Although this film is close to reaching 23 years, it is said to have predicted the future trends in marijuana for the next 20 years very accurately. This film shows the more innocent side of stoners.

Back in 1998, people had a much different perception of marijuana, however, this film shows it in both its medicinal and recreational capacity, and puts it in a good light for both the users and even the haters.

How High

Next up we have the film, How High. Which is yet another play on words. It is quite fun to see how all of these films have had some or other play on words. The film’s plot follows two young men as they make their way to Harvard after finding a way to make themselves a genius. This genius was not discovered through books, not through learning, but rather through a secret.

Their secret being the fact that they used the ashes of their dead friend to fertilize and maintain their weed crop. This hilarious and outlandish stoner comedy is definitely something to watch if you are looking for a good laugh.

Pineapple Express

Last but not least, we have the ever-popular Pineapple Express, starring Seth Rogan and James Franco. This film is about a newly discovered strain of marijuana called Pineapple express which is considered rare and said to be something amazing.

Through many adventures throughout the film, we have laughs and tears, making it definitely well worth the watch.

Our New Era of Seeking

Times of upheaval release new ideas. Old routines falter, are challenged, and may be overturned. The pandemic has scrambled the old order, making change possible. We are reinventing the office, increasing pay for “essential” workers, questioning police practices, and trying to root out systematic racism.

Swept up in changes that leave so many of us feeling adrift and unsettled, t’s important to remember that we’ve always had this churning in America. Change is our tradition. The early 19th Century saw a feverish era of reform, utopias, and new religions. There were many experimenters in the land. Americans were once full of the mad energy of Utopianists, as if they were convulsed by the falling away of boundaries, driven crazy with possibility. They produced an astonishing array of utopias and religions, almost at the rate Ford once rolled new models and styles off the assembly line, new ideas about sharing property, work, and love.

“We are all a little wild here with numberless projects of social reform. Not a reading man but has a draft of a new Community in his waistcoat pocket,” Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote to Thomas Carlyle in 1840. “One man renounces the use of animal food; and another of coin; and another of domestic hired service; and another of the State; and on the whole we have a commendable share of reason and hope.” Emerson’s own friends were planning an experimental commune. “I am gently mad myself, and am resolved to live cleanly,” said Emerson, but he would not join. His close friend Henry David Thoreau would conduct his own experiment in living, arriving at Walden Pond on Independence Day in 1845.

What became of those 19th Century experiments?

  • Some upstart, raucous religious awakenings and revivals became some of the mainline religions we know today; others burned bright and hot, before disappearing. The Methodists and Universalists are familiar to us, but you won’t find a church nearby for the Janssonists, Dorrilites, Dancing Johnites or scores of other small bands of believers.
  • Many utopias ended in folly, foundering on the most basic needs, like food and shelter. You can proselytize for a grand reordering of society, but first someone has to be able to grow a carrot and patch the roof to keep out the rain. The Shakers were America’s most successful utopia, thriving in 19 communities, and leaving us their impressive realization of a heavenly order on earth in every, tool, chair, box or meetinghouse they built, and in the 10,000 songs they “received.”
  • The reform movements for the abolition of slavery, for temperance, and women’s rights were a marathon races. Each transformed America.

These social experiments have important lessons for us today: It takes many people in debate to reform society. There is rarely a clear, neat path. Reform and change isn’t a railroad running from station to station. It’s never the tidy textbook history. Sometimes reforms don’t arrive where the reformers want. The temperance movement’s success with Prohibition was its undoing.

We need to recognize that we may be in a new era of experimentation. We have to give these experiments room to grow or fail. We need let people try many things, even if they may be contradictory.

Too often we make ourselves dizzy chasing trends. After a few months we’re too ready to call a movement or a new design for life, out of fashion, over – It’s so 2020.  We move on.  But it takes time to go from protest to legislation to a real change in behavior. A lot of time.

We also need to let ideas fail. They may need to fail to clear the way for reinvention, for another try. “The business of social change is tough. You never get all you go for, and you usually don’t get credit for what you do get,” says David S. Meyer, a professor of Sociology, and the author of How Social Movements (Sometimes) Matter.

And change isn’t a story that can be told in the blip of a sound bite. “We tell shorter stories about movements (Rosa Parks sat down, the world stood up) because we lack patience and context, and the shorter stories are more inspiring,” says Meyer. “It’s never one event, action, demonstration, statement, or lawsuit that makes the difference; rather, it’s an accumulation of efforts. All victories take forever. And they’re never enough, and certainly not necessarily permanent.”

All reforms are unfinished. Slavery was abolished, yes. But what is freedom? What is equality? And what was is owed to the formerly enslaved and their descendants? We’re still facing those questions today.

The lesson from previous eras of upheaval is that those dreams took rough strife and patience to give us renewed rights and new possibilities. The reform movements of the past could be ugly, upsetting and wasteful, but they got us to today. And just where is that? At the starting line. America is always at the starting line.

The takeaway is this: Give the reforms of our pandemic era time. Let things fail; let things restart.

Rolls-Royce‘s coachbuilt masterpiece Boat Tail makes its global public debut at the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on 2 October 2021. The car will be unveiled at 11.30 local time on the Mosaic Lawn by Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. It will then be available for guests and journalists to view for two days only, before returning to the privacy and seclusion that have surrounded it since it was formally revealed in May 2021.

Images of the car have been shared and admired around the world; however, this is the first time Boat Tail itself has been displayed in public. It is a unique opportunity for guests and journalists to examine the car’s remarkable coachbuilt construction and extraordinary Bespoke detailing, which were designed and hand-built at the Home of Rolls-Royce in a highly demanding technical and creative project lasting almost four years.

Boat Tail marks a seminal moment in the annals of Rolls-Royce, demonstrating the marque’s commitment to coachbuilding as a central part of its future direction and portfolio. It continues and accelerates a contemporary coachbuilding movement that began with Sweptail, the first coachbuilt Rolls-Royce of the modern era, which also made its first public appearance at Villa d’Este back in 2017.

Boat Tail represents a pivotal moment for the wider luxury goods sector.  As a truly hand-built, one-of-a-kind creation, in which both the bodywork and interior are designed and produced to the client’s specification, Rolls-Royce Coachbuild redraws the boundaries of luxury and opens vast new possibilities for patrons of contemporary design and fine craftsmanship.
