Recently, we compiled a list of a few of the famous food trucks around Chi-Town based on online reviews from Yelp and Google. As well, we received word-of-mouth comments from students attending the University of Chicago. Here’s what we found.
Food truck culture has gotten wildly popular this past year, especially with the pandemic. It’s an easy way to grab good food instead of sitting down at a restaurant, a luxury many of us were not able to afford. Chicago is notorious for having a diverse food scene. Here are some of our favorite food trucks around the city.
Ran by high school sweethearts Sam Barron and Sarah Weitz, The Fat Shallot boasts a variety of well-priced made-to-order sandwiches and sides, with all sandwiches costing you under less than $10. Feeling a little fancy? Give the Truffle BLT a try.
Family-run with fresh, homemade Mexican dishes, Aztec Daves is easily one of my favorite food trucks to go to when in the mood for good comfort food. From burritos to tacos, there’s something for everyone. Our recommendation for a good lunch option: The taco special, with three meat or veggie tacos, beans, rice and a drink, coming in at $14.
Grilled cheese is an American staple, but if you really think about it, it’s so hard to find a good grilled cheese sandwich. Established in 2011 by Chris Johnshon, he set out to create a truck that offered the kind of grilled cheese you crave. Try the Caprese, an italian twist on the classic grilled cheese, coming in at $9.50.
Piko offers a fusion between Mexican and Asian cuisines, with options ranging from tacos to bao to kimchi fried rice. Can’t decide what to get? We recommend the Everything Bowl, with kimchi fried rice, topped with all proteins, veggies and an egg. All that at $14.
Dessert food trucks? So important. For when the craving hits and you just want a quick donut, check out Beavers Donuts. For a medium box of 15 mini donuts, you only pay $8. Make sure to try their signature toppings, especially the Goombah, with Cannoli topping and crumbled pastry shells.
Another classic Mexican food truck. Ranchitos offers a variety of Mexican dishes at very reasonable prices. For only $9.99, you can get a stunning steak burrito. Make sure to also try their elotes, some of the best in Chicago.
With the goal to bring German street food to Chicago, this food truck combines German street dishes with a Turkish twist, creating a marriage of flavors brought to Germany by Turkish immigrants in the 70s. Try the classic CurryWurst with fries, for only $10. They also offer many vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options, so make sure to pass by.
Classic, cheesy, and comforting are the words we use to describe this truck. There’s really no way you could go wrong with pizza, and Chicago Pizza Boss offers a selection of dishes for you to choose from. If you’re a fan of spice, go for the Hell Fire’s Kiss Pizza. At only $14, you get classic base topped with mastro brand imported hot sopressata, wildfire’s hell fire chilli & roasted garlic infused honey. Sounds fantastic, non?
Another one of our favorite dessert food trucks. This truck offers a delicious variety of cupcakes for everyone with a sweet tooth. Anna Wu offers a twist on classic recipes and loves to support charitable causes such as Breast Cancer awareness. Get your sweet tooth satisfied while supporting a cause! We love it. Our choice of cupcake? The matcha cupcake, at only $4.
Delicious Korean food on wheels. Described as Seoul food for the soul, this truck offers classic Korean dishes as well as more modern twists. Our pick? The bulgogi sandwich, coming in at only $9. A delicious twist on the Korean beef dish for on the go.
360 Magazine had the opportunity to try LA’s Premier Cocktail Bar & Taqueria, Lanea. This west side delight is opened up for indoor or outdoor dining at their quaint patio. With a small wooden boat plopped center-adjacent and arcade games at the bar, guests are quickly struck with a beach-y, hip atmosphere as they enter the establishment.
The early afternoon brunch began outdoors as we grabbed a seat, scanned a QR code for digital menus (seen at most LA restaurants post-pandemic) and were settled in by the waiter for authentic Mexican cuisine and drinks. If you are looking to quench your thirst, the margarita flights are immaculately made for a diverse pallet. The 360 favorite out of the four margs served had to be the Spicy Margarita (JAJA Tequila, Habanero Honey, Fresh Lime). It had the perfect amount of spice alongside The Chainsmoker’s JAJA tequila – must try! Other handcrafted margs include the Picante Coast Highway (Nosotros Blanco, passionfruit, ginger, habanero honey, citrus), SOCALienta Margarita (Cazadores Blanco, Thai Chili, Serrano, Habanero Honey, Pineapple, Citrus) and the Classic Marg.
After trying the brunch tacos, we decided that they should be an item kept at all taquerias. Huevos Con Chorizo and the Huevos Con Veggie, which included sauteed spinach and mushrooms, did not disappoint. Brunch is served until 2pm. Off the lunch section, the street style Barbacoa taco used lamb that had been wrapped in agave leaves and pit-roasted underground for 36 hours. Tenderized meat with their spicy homemade salsas will have you in a food coma before leaving the restaurant. Mouth-watering is an understatement when thinking back to the burrito with added flavors and toppings. Choose any of the proteins, or substitute for beyond meat.
Overall, the service is refreshing and a great eatery to start or end a beach day. Lanea is located at 217 Broadway, Santa Monica, CA, and is open for indoor and outdoor dining, takeout, and delivery. Lunch is available on Thursdays and Fridays, with DJs spinning on Fridays and Saturdays starting at 8 p.m.

National Pizza Week: growth pizza restaurants comes to abrupt halt

Next week is National Pizza Week. An entire week in honor of one of America’s all-time favorite foods. Time to crunch the numbers! The latest statistics from data specialist BoldData show that the amount of pizza restaurants in America has increased with a whopping 39.2% over the last five years. However, the growth abruptly stopped in 2020.
Pizza party over?
Craving pizza? There are currently 90.817 pizza restaurants in The United States. An increase of 39.2% compared to 2016, in this year there were 65.213 pizza places. Especially 2017 was a good year for pizza: with an increase of 11.137 pizza joints (17.1 %). In the beginning of 2021 the USA should’ve reached the magical number of 100.000 pizza restaurants, but then COVID-19 happened… The growth of pizza restaurants came to an abrupt halt in 2020, with an increase of only 581 restaurants.
California is the pizza place to be
When it comes to pizza, California is the place to be. The state has 8.271 pizza places, of which 2.044 are based in the Los Angeles area. New York comes in second with 7.190 restaurants, a growth of 48% compared to 2016. The biggest growth took place in Hawaii: a whopping 69%. Pizza lovers best stay away from Wyoming, the state has the lowest number of pizza joints (133).
USA takes biggest slice worldwide
Americans love their pizza. It’s even considered America’s favorite food. Therefore it’s no surprise that the USA is home to the largest number of pizza restaurants worldwide. Italy – where the modern pizza was originally invented – comes in second with 42.288 pizzeria’s. Brazil completes the top 3 with 32.283 pizza joints. But the USA has nothing to fear from the rest of the world. With 90.817 pizza restaurant the USA still has more pizzeria’s then the top 4 combined (88.100). Australia is number 8 on the list: with 5.598 pizza restaurants they have one of the highest number of pizza places per capita.

Voted “Best Mexican Food on the Westside” and “Best Cocktail Bar in LA”, Lanea Cocktail and Taco Bar spiced it up for National Taco Day making their to-go options that much easier to pick up to celebrate the delicious holiday. From 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, October 4th, Lanea hosted a Drive-Thru Taco Stand to raise funds for the Santa Monica Firefighters Relief Fund. Customers could walk up or purchase in advance to pick up there order at an easily accessible drive-thru, located in the adjacent alley. There, guests could indulge in their favorite street tacos made to order from Chef Petra herself. Lanea offered free tacos to all firefighters and frontline workers as a courtesy for all their dedication and hard work during these times. Furthermore, the restaurant offered one free taco (of your choice) with the purchase of any hand-crafted cocktail ($9). A portion of all sales from National Taco Day went to the Santa Monica Firefighters Relief Fund.

The second annual Tequila & Taco Music Festival to bring 2 days of the finest in tequila, tacos and entertainment to beautiful Downtown San Diego
This spring, San Diego’s Tequila & Taco Festival will be returning to the beautiful Embarcadero Marina Park South in Downtown San Diego on the weekend of April 21 and 22, 2018. The festival will feature exclusive tequila sampling exclusively on Saturday, with entertainment, good eats and other libations for guests 21 and up available throughout the weekend.
Performing will be multi-cultural supergroup Patron Latin Rhythms, a collaboration of well-seasoned professional musicians with an equally diverse catalog, ranging from Latin Jazz to old school R&B and back again. Also performing at the festival will be Cumbia and Spanish-language rock outfit Adelaide, whose electrifying performances have become Disneyland’s resident Latin dance and rock representatives, with others to be announced.
The Tequila & Taco Festival will take place on Saturday, April 21, 2018 from 12:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. (Tequila sampling is 12:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M.) and Sunday, April 22, 2018 from 12:00 P.M. to 6:30 P.M. Saturday tequila sampling tickets are $40. General admission tickets are $10 per individual Saturday and Sunday ticket. Premiere 2-Day passes are available for $60. Individuals must be 21 years of age or older with a valid ID to enter the festival and to consume alcohol. There is no tequila tasting on Sunday. Ticket holders will have access to delicious gourmet street tacos, craft beers, margarita booths, art vendors and live music throughout the weekend. A portion of the proceeds from this event will benefit the Gen Giammanco Foundation, which provides financial support to deserving college bound student athletes in San Diego.
Minimalism is all the rage at the moment thanks to writers like Fumio Sasaki, so why not apply that approach when planning your next vacation? There’s so much information out there that it can seem overwhelming when you start researching places to go, with so many offers, travel guides, blogs, photos, videos, podcasts and all the rest. Sometimes you just need to drown out the noise and focus on what’s important.
That’s why Expedia has created these minimalist travel posters to help you see the essential elements on 14 of the top vacation destinations in the world. They’ve picked out the most important aspects of each destination, namely where you should go first, what food you should eat and where you can get that one stunning and shareable photo for your Instagram or Facebook page.
If you go to Berlin, for example, a whistlestop tour using these posters would take you to the aptly-named Panoramapunkt for a panoramic view of the TV Tower, followed by a trip to the past at the historic Brandenburg Gate. For food options, currywurst is a spicy taste of Berlin life and culture, while you can finish your stay with an energetic and symbolic bike ride down the Mauerweg, which follows the route of the old Berlin Wall.
Swapping Germany for South Africa, Cape Town has plenty to offer, even in the snapshot form of a minimalist visit. Speaking of snapshots, Bloubergstrand is the place to go to get that iconic photo of Table Mountain while you’ll also want to keep your camera to hand when you’re at Boulders Beach so you can get a shot of the penguins. Yes, there really are penguins there. The Neighbourgoods Market in Woodstock is a good place to get souvenirs, while the recommended dish of the trip is potjiekos, a traditional meat stew.
As you’ll have seen from these two examples, there’s so much you can fit into even a minimalist travel poster if the destination is as exciting as Berlin or Cape Town. Others getting the minimalist treatment include Havana, London, Paris and even the Serengeti and Siam Reap, the Cambodian home of 800-year-old temple Angkor Wat. You can probably guess what the iconic photo from that trip would be.

Located in Northwest Texas, Lubbock earned the name “Hub of the Plains” in 1909. It’s appellation was followed by Lubbock County’s expansive business markets, which resulted in its numerous appearances in national survey rankings. Among them, we find Lubbock as the 24th Best City for Small Business in the U.S.in 2017 by ValuePenguin, No.7 on Forbes’ List of 19 Opportunity Cities in 2014, the15th Best City to Start a Business in 2016 according to WalletHub and the 6th Best City for 20-Somethings in the U.S. in 2016 by Move.org.
But as we say in the title, not everything is about business in Lubbock. 360 Magazine had the pleasure to visit the Texan city of opportunities, and had a taste of its terrific culinary range.
Our team stayed in the West Texas’s only AAA Four-Diamond hotel, the Overton Hotel & Conference Center. The Overton is located in the heart of the “Hub City”— just steps from Texas Tech University. As Lubbock’s largest hotel conference center, The Overton Hotel & Conference Center is the ideal destination for corporate business events, weddings, Texas Tech visitors and visitors to Lubbock, Texas. At the Overton, we had a reception of grilled veggie display for those green lovers and a fiddlehead fern. But we can highlight their dessert selection, the strawberry cheesecake mousse shooters combined with a bavarian cream with fruit truffle mousse shooters is all you need to satisfy your sweet palate.
Another delicious option for a lunch in Lubbock was Evie Mae’s Pit BBQ. Quickly becoming a local favorite, Evie Mae’s was recently featured on the cover of Texas Monthly as one of the Top 25 New and Improved BBQ Joints in Texas. Here, you’ll discover melt-in-your-mouth brisket, green chile sausage, homemade sides and an assortment of gluten-free desserts. Arnis Robbins nicely greeted us while we tasted the brisket and an outstanding gluten free cornbread with sausage. For dessert, we had ice cream on a gluten free brownies.
Another option is the La Diosa Cellars. Hidden in the heart of downtown Lubbock, La Diosa Cellars offers an exceptional wine menu along with Spanish-inspired tapas and live music. In this Lubbock must-see you can try an escargot accompained by 3 different hummus: pesto/basil, cranberry/beets and garlic lemon.
Moving up to dining our first selection is the West Table Kitchen and Bar. This upscale restaurant and full bar offers a unique style of food and beverage to its patrons. Be sure to check out their website for their seasonally evolving menu. Here, 360 Magazine met Cameron West, who provided us with an amazing Caesar salad with anchovies, short ribs and bread pudding. Cagle Steaks, a pure Texan family-owned steakhouse serves specialty steaks, barbecue, smoked salmon, grilled chicken, fajitas and more in a Southwestern, casual atmosphere.
On the other hand The Crafthouse Gastropub is the dining restaurant you can’t miss. Be sure to try the Texas Burger, named in Texas Monthly’s 2016 list of the Top 50 Burgers in Texas. You’ll also find a wide variety of dishes and a Sunday brunch menu that’s both sweet and savory. We tried lamb chili and baked cheddar with swiss, roasted red peppers, green onion and mayo, and also steak frites.
After a big meal, 360 Magazine picked up the best dessert options at Lubbock. If you ever dreamed about building your own dessert, Pie Bar Drop is your perfect hot spot. We created an Oreo pie filled with crushed vanilla wafer with pecan, a pineapple coconut filled with crushed graham cracker, caramel drizzle and coconut savings on top. Yes, unreal but glorious for your palate. Yet we had our dessert, a good shot for those instagram bloggers while enjoying a coffee would be The Coffee Shop with its friendly decoration.
Keeping up with Lubbock’s succulent food array, we discovered marvelous breakfast selections at Arbor Hotel & Conference Center. A locally owned and operated hotel, is a true jewel to West Texas. The new hotel features a year-round outdoor hot tub, conversational fire pits, hotel bar and much more. The hotel offers 3,000 square feet of meeting space as well as a pre-function space. We enjoyed a Chuck Wagon Breakfast with National Cowboy Symposium, true made in Texas!
The advance of agriculture in Lubbock made it the marketing center that it is now, and in that process wine making had an important role. We selected our top winery, and it is clearly not an easy selection in this Texan county. Here there is a list of our top wine stations:
At the Funky Door Bistro & Wine Room you can “wine and dine” like nowhere else. Known for its fondue and wine bar, this fine-dining restaurant showcases some of the most unique varietals of wines and pairings of food. We tried their salmon and sashimi ahi tuna.
The Wine Nest is your place if you love music. Three vineyards, one family-owned winery and multiple award-winning wines, all located just on the outskirts of Lubbock. From aromatic Malbec to sweet Gewürztraminer, wine lovers with any palate will enjoy the selection we tasted at Trilogy Cellars. The Wine Nest is a premier boutique wine and gift store, perfect for shopping, sipping a glass of wine and listening to live music.
Find award winning wines at Pheasant Ridge Winery. It proudly boasts the oldest vines in Texas. The bold flavor and character of their wines reflect the Cox family’s mastery of wine production. Pheasant Ridge received the first gold medal ever awarded to a Texas red wine for their Cabernet Sauvignon in the San Francisco Wine Competition in 1986.
Tour and tasting at the Llano Estacado Winery. The simple mission of Llano Estacado, from its beginning in 1976, has been to embody the potential of Texas wine. Today, Llano Estacado is the largest, bestselling Premium Winery in Texas, producing wines of World Class Quality, and has been an ongoing pioneer in introducing not just Texans, but also the entire world to the great wines made in the Lone Star State.
Tour and tasting at McPherson Cellars. Our new friends The McPherson family has been a part of Texas winemaking for over 40 years. Owner and Winemaker Kim McPherson greeted us and showed how he has beautifully restored the historic Coca-Cola Bottling Plant, located in Lubbock’s Depot Entertainment District, into a world-class winery. We tasted their Texas wines that have won over 600 medals in state, national, and international wine competitions. They also sell cute wine merchandising, such as the famous T-Shirts with messages like “My doctor says I need glasses” or “This wine is making me awesome”.
360 crew surely adores food and wine, but Lubbock had much more to offer. During our visit to the northwest city of Texas, we discovered enough from our country at the following attractions:
National Ranching Heritage Center-Dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history of ranching, it is a museum with seven exhibit galleries and a 19-acre historical park. Authentic, restored ranching structures dating from 1780 to 1950, tell the story of how early ranchers and their families adapted to a harsh environment. Annual events include Candlelight at the Ranch, an event hosted in December to recreate a frontier Christmas, and Ranch Day, an April event designed to make history come alive with cowboys, chuck wagons and horses. We were surprised by some goodies like the Smith and Wesson model revolver or the Native American real Comanche Feather Headdress.
Lubbock Lake Landmark– Smithsonian Magazine named Lubbock Lake Landmark one of the top five destinations to see evidence of first Americans. In fact, signs of human life from 12,000 years ago have been uncovered at the Lubbock Lake Landmark, the oldest continuously inhabited site in the country. This internationally recognized archaeological and national history preserve provides a perfect family outing and regularly hosts Night Hikes on a 3-mile scenic trail through the Yellow House Canyon.
Texas stands for its art in many aspects. They are well known for its modern art and the beautiful Marfa is an exceptional demonstration. Lubbock possesses art exhibitions as well;
You can experience an interactive art space like no other at Lubbock’s Tornado Gallery. Tour the gallery that showcases Tony Greer’s Plasma sculptures featuring Xenon tube pieces and other neon objects. Learn more about the process of creating these masterpieces and the art of glassblowing. We loved those @unityinglass pieces.
Roberto Bruno was the best architecture artist in Lubbock and his house remains as a must-see. He moved to Lubbock in 1971 to teach art at Texas Tech University’s school of architecture. He started working on The Steel House in 1973, two years after sculpting a similar piece of art, which inspired him to build something bigger to live in. This three story, 2,200-square-foot house overlooks Ransom Canyon, and remained uncompleted before his death in 2008. The city also counts with several murals and a photographer alley, where the creativity spreads around the streets.
A city is not a city without its nightlife. 360 Magazine especially enjoyed performances of Charlie’s Tout and Jaime Wyatt at The Bluelight Live. Other music selection we had was at Lubbock Moonlight Musicals. It inspires audiences throughout the summer with fun and exciting musicals at their outdoor amphitheater located in Mackenzie Park. Making use of local talent, as well as bringing in various Broadway professionals,Lubbock Moonlight Musicals is able to produce shows that thrill all audiences, from sophisticated theatergoers to first-timers. We saw a fascinating performance of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain.
With a flourishing restaurant and bar scene, not to mention the unprecedented rise of craft beer and creative cocktails as of late, there’s truly something for everyone in America’s finest city. You’ll also find championship golf courses, museums, and some other awesome restaurants as the Chimy’s , Giorgio’s Pizza and Torchy’s tacos within city limits.
