INTERVIEW WITH SHERI MILLER

Singer-songwriter Sheri Miller releases her new single “Born To Love,” a tender, instant classic from her 6-song collection, Waking Up To This Miracle Life, out November 19. Recorded with GRAMMY-winning producer Jeff Bova, Miller’s timeless collection is at once ecstatic and incisive, brimming with joy even as it reckons with struggle and heartache.

The songs here are radical acts of self-love and empowerment fueled by raw emotion and explosive energy, and Miller’s mesmerizing performances are utterly transcendent to match, her voice shifting from hushed intimacy to soaring grandeur with the preternatural ease of Ann Wilson or Brandi Carlile. Add it all up and you’ve got a rich, cinematic masterpiece about embracing the beauty and magic of being alive, a celebratory ode to love itself from an artist who passionately lives to create. I got the opportunity to speak with Sheri Miller about her upcoming EP.

  1. What inspired this album?

When writing this record, ‘Waking Up To This Miracle Life,’ I felt inspired how it’s a miracle to be alive; especially at this time. To wake up every morning with a heart beating of its own independent accord, lungs breathing oxygen without us turning on a power switch, seeing beautiful blue skies with our open eyes, smelling delicious fragrances of trees, roses, jasmine, freshly-baked soft chocolate chip cookies, hearing glorious notes resounding from orchestras, brass bands or finely crafted pianos, guitars, drums, listening to golden-throated voices, touching luxurious silk fabrics, and feeling magnificent emotions of love, appreciation, happiness, fun, exhilaration!

How being alive in our physical bodies is such a gift; what an extraordinary miracle we have our genius cells working symbiotically in mysterious harmony. Though I don’t understand electricity or the miracle of being born, I’m glad to be here! This record celebrates life passionately. Especially after pandemic, it feels so good to focus on the magnificence of being alive. We did it! We made it. How blessed and lucky we are. No matter what struggles you’ve gone through (we all have), there’s always hope, fun, and even joy waiting closely; You’re never alone. If you believe in yourself, trusting there’s unseen help available to us- closed doors open, our timing gets good, and avalanches of beautiful opportunities flow like rivers into our experience. Your tiny extra bit of optimism cracks the door open to success, love, and more of your dreams realized. I choose to keep waking up to this miracle life.

  1. When did you start making music?

I started making music at eight, taking classical piano lessons with a strict teacher. My free, wild, creative spirit rebelled against the boring confines of practicing already written music, when I wanted to compose and paint new melodies, paired with new words and lyrics, creating new musical paintings. So, I spent much of my practice time composing dozens of new songs, pouring out complete melodies, lyrics, chords. Anthems about rocking the nation, songs about eternal, everlasting, pure love and world peace, love songs to my mother, and “The Lost Tribe,” a song about a wandering tribe in the desert, buffalo and surviving. I still have these handwritten 8-year-old songbooks, and I’ve written hundreds of songs since age 8. I consider myself a ‘music lifer,’ writing songs and performing for the sheer feeling of joy and pleasure; as I evolve as a human, so does my music, songs, and art. I am my best masterpiece.

  1. Who are your musical inspirations? 

My musical inspirations started with my mom, who’s a magnificent opera singer, classical pianist, composer, and storyteller. I love the Beatles, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Joni Mitchell, Ray Charles, Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, Carole King, Paul Simon, Rodger & Hart, Duke Ellington, Beach Boys, Rickie Lee Jones, Bob Dylan, Coldplay, Mozart, Tchaichovsky, Piazolla, Alicia Keys, India.Arie, Prince, Queen, Freddy Mercury, Tom Petty, Bob Marley, James Brown, Gershwins, Rumi, and brilliant musicians I work with Jeff Bova, Kate Baker, Will Lee, Tim Pierce, Chris Lord-Alge, Frank Filipetti, Joe Zook, Dave Eggar, Paul Shaffer, Steve Cropper. There are endless musicians who inspire me, flowing through every time I create. I appreciate all who’ve come before, paving this golden trail of delights.

  1. Did any of these musical influences specifically inspire this album?

Writing “Gold Hearted Man” on my big acoustic-electric 1969 sunburst Guild hollow body guitar, I felt the presence of blues legend John Lee Hooker. It almost felt like he was guiding my hands and heart to new undiscovered places within me, creating a song ship sailing to unchartered territories in my musical landscape. There are traces of Joni Mitchell in “Empty Sky” and hints of the Beatles in “Everybody Feels This Way Sometimes.” Honestly, I believe every note, sound, visual, smell, every idea that’s ever touched us, is interwoven into the gorgeous colorful, rainbow fabric quilt of art, we create.

  1. What made you decide to become a singer songwriter?

I never made a conscious decision to ‘become’ a singer-songwriter. Thank God, for me it was a natural, easy, gradual, ‘gentle push’ of spirit; my soul led me to this choice. It chose me, I chose it, I decided to answer the calling. I believe we are all called to something, and it’s never too late, no matter what age, circumstances, to answer this calling, following your bliss. My story is magical, powerful synchronicity at work. While in college, I was secretly writing lyrics in my bedroom and taking jazz piano lessons 20 minutes away. I started receiving the thought ‘wouldn’t it be nice to have a little keyboard in my bedroom, so I could write songs easily? I can’t fit a piano, I don’t have lots of money, wouldn’t a little keyboard be nice?’

I started dreaming up this idea for months, until it exploded vividly one Sunday morning. I woke up in a surreal, groggy state, having passionately dreamt of owning a little Casio keyboard the night before. Instead of walking to the library, taking the faster, straight-shot city street path, I felt magnetically drawn, with a strong impulse, to take the longer, beautiful, winding path across campus. While on this scenic route, I passed a one-day church sale, selling the exact Casio keyboard I dreamt the night before!  It was $20, and ecstatic by this little miracle, I began joyfully composing songs in my bedroom on this Casio keyboard. It felt like my soul gave me the gentlest, loving push and wink, to trust myself; sometimes the longer, winding path has magic. Faster isn’t always more rewarding or satisfying. From that day forward, I’ve been composing and performing. The Casio keyboard manifesting was a tiny miracle of magic. Miracles exist everywhere, if you choose to open your eyes, and allow yourself to dream.

  1. Are there any special moments you’d like to share while making this EP?

For “Gold Hearted Man” basking in the afterglow of a soulful kiss, inspiration poured through me, and I composed this song in a hurricane flood of emotion. Initially I felt uncomfortable channeling this sensuality in the studio, but when the recording light blinked, BOOM, we cut vocals lightning speed. I’m proud of how we captured the passionate feeling in this recording.

For “Born To Love,” Day 1, I thought we had the “perfect” vocal after comping. The next day, after singing for 5 hours, the producer asked me to sing one last take. I said “sure” to humor him, though thinking “there’s no way we can use it, I’m too tired.” So I let go, singing effortlessly, easily, naturally, without trying. I got out of my own way, allowing the song to speak, my soul to speak. When I opened my eyes, thinking everyone would say it’s a throwaway vocal, instead they said “that was a Grammy-Award winning performance!” Stunned, I listened back, and realized MAGIC HAD FLOWED, when I surrendered, letting go of getting an “amazing vocal.” This live vocal became our “final vocal.” I learned sometimes “magic” is better than “perfect.” I trust the magic now.

  1. Is there a specific flow/genre to this EP that you’d like the audience to follow?

However your heart and soul calls you to listen. Follow your instincts.

  1. If you had to describe the “story of this release” in one paragraph, what would you say?

“Luminous, passionate, triumphant, love-filled collection of artistic songs inspires the hearts, connects with the souls of many, to remember and awaken to the brilliant, magnificent miracles in their own lives.”

  1. What’s next for you?

I’m thrilled with the new, inspired songs I’ve been composing and writing. I have endless new records in me, and I am happily, eagerly anticipating recording the new songs, and performing them. What’s next? More fun. More joy. More treasure chests of glittering new songs. More inspired new records. More exhilarating live performances. More artistic discoveries of wonder. More magnificent miracles revealing themselves, as we keep waking up to this miracle life.

JENA ROSE LIFESIZE CHESS MUSIC VIDEO – CHECKMATE

Cuban-American gen-Z artist Jena Rose hit a 5-week streak on MTV’s Friday Livestream with Kevan Kenney, joining a-list artists including Harry Styles and Zayn in the fan-voted Top 10 rankings. The larger-than-life music video, “Checkmate”, released via Gem Street Music and Sweety High, was inspired by “The Queen’s Gambit” and her lifelong fascination with chess. The pop track visually follows Jena as she takes the power back in a toxic relationship. Watch here.

Since releasing “Checkmate” in June, Rose has experienced tremendous momentum across social media and DSPs. By the numbers, “Checkmate” has generated 4.65M total views and streams, 450K monthly Spotify listeners and 70K new TikTok followers. Additionally, the “Checkmate” sound has been used in 8.3K videos.

The single kicks off an exciting new chapter for Jena Rose and prepares listeners for her forthcoming debut EP Baby, Maybe. The project is slated for release later this year and will feature collaborations with all-star co-writers/producers including Nick Furlong and John Feldmann (Blink 182, Panic! At The Disco).

An unusual venture sees Queen take on a movie soundtrack, with the band determined that the resulting album should be as musically rewarding as their previous ones. Brian and Roger describe how this exciting project came about and broke new ground.

The Greatest, the journey through the Queen story so far celebrating their biggest songs, performances and achievements, this week looks back at a fascinating new departure for the band.

For what would be the band’s ninth studio album, this would also be a first for them, their first movie soundtrack. It is, of course, Flash Gordon. For a band given to aural spectacular, it seemed a perfect fit although producer Dino De Laurentiis did have his moment of doubt.

In 1980, work on Flash began in tandem with the recording sessions for The Game, but while this would obviously represent something of a departure for the band, they were determined to make it as much a Queen album as their previous ones.

Set against some rare footage of the band live performing “Flash” to image track in London’s Advision Studios, Brian and Roger explain how the project came about.

Roger Taylor: “It was an interesting offer really from (producer) Dino De Laurentiis, and Joe Smith, head of Elektra Records, engineered the whole thing really. And, it was interesting actually, because the film was a big hit in Europe and UK, and flopped completely in America.”

Brian May: “But it became a cult video thing later on. I feel pretty proud of the Flash thing, because really this was the first time that a rock soundtrack had actually been put to a movie which wasnt about rock music.

“There was a lot of resistance to it, a lot of people said it wouldnt work, including Dino. When he first heard it, he went “oh, its not going to work for my film,” the idea of the rock music being in there. But he pretty soon became accustomed to the idea, and he loved it in the end.”

Roger Taylor: “It actually was sort of Brians thing really, and it really did forge quite a lot. I mean you never heard heavy rock – a lot of it was quite heavy – music on a film, and so this battle sequence is really quite ground breaking.”

Brian May: “It was, I think, the first.”

Roger Taylor: “And now you cant see a movie without soundtrack albums coming at you and heavy music.”

Brian May: “And heavy guitars.”

Roger Taylor: “So I think we were quite well ahead of the game there.”

As The Game album started to take up more of the band’s time, Brian took on the responsibility of getting the soundtrack over the line. The title track, “Flash,” would be the only single released, but the album is crammed full of classic Queen tunes  not least “The Hero,” which became a stellar opening to the live showߪ.as can be seen in this band performance in Milton Keynes, UK, June 5 1982.

Understandably, this project begged the question at the time as to whether Queen would consider doing another movie soundtrack. Roger Taylor said at the time: “This film thing was very interesting, and if somebody comes up with a really fascinating offer for another film, perhaps we might think about that. But, no, were a rock and roll band, think we always will be.”

Queen did of course make a return to scoring with their second soundtrack six years later, for another science-fiction fantasy, the hugely successful Highlander.

NELLY’S DILEMMA Video Hits 1 Billion Views on YouTube

The video for “Dilemma” was directed by and produced by GRAMMY® Award winning Ryan Bowser pka GHOST (Monica, 112, Tyrese, Bow Wow).

The second song released from the Nellyville album, “Dilemma” featuring Kelly Rowland was a No. 1 single across multiple Billboard charts (Hot 100, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop/Top 40/Rhythmic). Nelly’s “Hot in Herre” was No. 1 on the charts, until it was replaced by his own single “Dilemma.” The smash hit went on to win that year’s GRAMMY® Award for Best Rap/Sung Performance.

“Dilemma” secured its place in the hearts of Nelly fans over the last 20 years and has recently been boosted by social media popularity from both existing fans and a whole new fanbase lip-syncing to the iconic song.

Born Cornell Iral Haynes Jr. in Austin, Texas, and eventually settling in St. Louis, Nelly is credited as putting St. Louis hip hop music on the map. “BEST DRIVING SONG” SURVEY RESULTS

Insurance.com’s survey of the year’s most popular driving songs shows that most people get in touch with their inner disco dancer—with or without bell bottoms and platform shoes—while they’re on the road. “Dancing Queen” by ABBA shimmied its way into the top spot this year, knocking last year’s favorite, “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen, to fourth place.

This one-stop destination for expert advice on health, life and auto insurance asked drivers to name the best and worst road trip tunes, the genres most suited for driving, and the artists they’d rather not admit are on their playlist.

Songs topping driving playlists this year include:

  • ABBA – Dancing Queen – 26%
  • Journey – Don’t Stop Believin’ – 25%
  • AC/DC – Highway to Hell – 23%
  • Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody – 23%
  • Carrie Underwood – Jesus Take the Wheel – 20%

Not surprisingly, “Dancing Queen” was most popular among drivers aged 45-54, who may be nostalgic about boogying the night away to the song years ago.

Survey participants also made predictions about what the next great classic road trip songs will be:

  • Bruno Mars – Uptown Funk – 34%
  • Taylor Swift – Shake it off – 27%
  • Justin Timberlake – Can’t Stop the Feeling – 26%
  • Florida Georgia Line – Cruise – 25%
  • Billie Eilish – Bad guy – 20%

Although a disco song topped the list, the genre itself did not rank among drivers’ favorites for road trips. Instead, they prefer classic rock (15%), followed by country (12%) and ‘80s music (11%). Those who want to let Jesus take the wheel reported Christian gospel music is their favorite road trip genre (8%). Among the least popular genres—all with 1% popularity—were heavy metal, Latin, K-pop and indie/folk. Punk rock was dead last with 0%.

Survey respondents also listed some tunes and recording artists that they are unlikely to listen to with their windows down. 

Some of the most popular artists in the “guilty pleasures” category are:

  • Britney Spears – 16%
  • Adele – 15%
  • Bon Jovi – 12%
  • Justin Bieber – 12%
  • Celine Dion – 12%

“This is the third year we’ve conducted this light-hearted study,” explains Les Masterson, managing editor for Insurance.com. “It’s an opportunity to remind consumers that we spend a lot of time in our cars and it’s important to have the best possible car insurance coverage in the event that anything goes wrong.”

“While background music can be a nice way to help pass the time, it’s important that people maintain full attention on the road and avoid distracted driving,” Masterson adds.

This survey explores who controls the music during a road trip, how parents handle their children’s music choices, and what solo drivers are most likely to do when their favorite song comes on.

To gather these results, Insurance.com commissioned a survey of 1,000 drivers and asked them to choose the best and worst songs for driving, what song will be the next road-trip favorite, and which artists represent the biggest guilty driving pleasures.

Brian May announces re-release and new music video of his classic single 

DRIVEN BY YOU ahead of remastered Back To The Light album

“The song Freddie Mercury generously gave his blessing to be my solo track.”

Brian May’s first solo hit, and the unforgettable TV ad it was made for, came from the most unlikely of origins.

Driven By You is, without doubt, one of rock’s most rousing and lasting anthems. Originally written for a Ford car television commercial, the solo track was a worldwide hit when it first debuted as a single off May’s 1992 Back To The Light album. But the unforgettable song had its beginnings oceans away from the open roads of the UK countryside that were framed in that TV ad.

Originally released in November 1991, Driven By You saw success worldwide including reaching No. 6 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 9 on the US Billboard Album Rock Chart. Re-released to download on June 25 ahead of the forthcoming remastered reissue of May’s Back To The Light album on August 6, the reissue of the track comes with a scorching new 30th Anniversary video edit. The performance was originally filmed when the Queen legend sang the track live for the first time at the 1991 Guitar Legends concert in Seville, Spain, and during his 1992 South America tour.

The energetic footage features Brian performing the song with an all-star band including Cozy Powell on drums, Neil Murray on bass and Steve Vai on rhythm guitar. Plus, Rick Wakeman and Mike Moran on keyboards, alongside Maggie Ryder, Miriam Stockley and Chris Moran on backing vocals. That music video can be seen in its updated form here.

Sharing the backstory to Driven By You, May cites a Los Angeles pool bathroom as the unlikely starting point for his classic song.

“There’s a kind of mystery about writing songs. You never know where they come from. All I know is I was sitting around a swimming pool in Los Angeles with an ad producer. He’s sitting there sunning himself. I’m there with my future wife sunning myself by the pool, and we get talking. And he says, ‘Oh, you write songs, don’t you?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I write songs.’ He said, ‘Well could you write a song for an advert? Have you ever done that?’ And I went, ‘No, I’ve never done it.’ He asked, ‘Would you like to?’ And I said, ‘Yes, I’d be very interested.’ He then asked me how I would feel about a slogan that goes, ‘Everything we do, we do for you.’

“And I went, ‘Yeah, I could relate to that’ because I can feel that in my own mind about my own self. And it got modified later on. It became ‘Everything we do is driven by you’ because it was about cars, and I liked that even more. And as soon as he said that I went off to the bathroom with my little tape recorder and sang some stuff into the tape recorder. I sang most of the verse and a bit of the chorus, which is the way it happens with me. Suddenly a light goes on and I could hear it in my head, I could hear the whole thing, ‘Driven By You,’ and I wrote it for them, for the Ford Car Company, and completed it very quickly. I went into the studio when I got back, completed it quickly for them, and then they liked it.”

Revisiting Driven By You today, May has also revealed how the song helped create a special understanding with Freddie Mercury in his final days and how the Queen singer encouraged his dear friend and bandmate to ‘find his wings’ in his solo career.

Talking of Freddie, May says: “I played it to Freddie and I said, ‘Freddie, you know if this becomes a Queen track, which it might do, obviously you should sing it.’ He listened and went, ‘You’ve done it very well darling, and I think you should sing it’. Now whether that’s because he really did think I sang it well or just because he didn’t want to sing anything, I don’t know. But he said, ‘It’s beautiful, it’s great, it’s very complete in its own way, you should do it.’ And he said something very profound at the time. He said, ‘You know we’re all thinking and wondering what’s going to happen to me, and you don’t have to feel embarrassed about it. You know you should be thinking about your solo career at this time and if this is the beginning of your solo career then it’s a very worthy beginning. This is probably the beginning of your finding your wings as you need to do.’ So, Freddie was very far-sighted and very generous as always and sort of gave me permission to do this as a solo track, which I did.”

“I rewrote the words as a piece of relationship therapy, you know, ‘Everything I do is driven by you’ and put it out as a single and it was a hit. So, it was a nice boost to me to feel I could do things on my own. I wasn’t just a piece of Queen. And that’s what I believe about the core of songs; sometimes you don’t know why you’re writing them. You don’t know where it’s coming from, but it can be channeled into a way which makes sense in various ways. And things are always about life for me; they’re always about relationships. Either my relationships or relationships with people around me. It’s about humans interacting. That to me is the most exciting thing in the world; the most important thing and the hardest thing to get right in your life. A lot of people can do great stuff. You know, fly aero planes, go to the Moon. Relationships… not so easy. So, it’s about that as always.”

Celebrated American rock bands Coheed and Cambria and The Used today announced their upcoming summer outdoor co-headlining amphitheater tour. The 18-city U.S. tour, produced by Live Nation, will begin on Friday, Aug 27 in Irvine, CA and make stops in Phoenix, Dallas, Cleveland, New Jersey, Worcester, and more. The late summer journey will feature special guests Meet Me @ The Altar and carolesdaughter on select dates, and will culminate with a performance at Daily’s Place in Jacksonville, FL on Sept 24.

It’s been over two years since Coheed and Cambria’s 2018 album, Vaxis I: The Unheavenly Creatures, was released as the band’s “return to concept” album. After stepping away with a more introspective album in 2015, frontman Claudio Sanchez and the band returned to the sci-fi universe of The Amory Wars in what was said to be the first of a 5-part series of albums. With 2021 upon us, and a major summer tour now announced, the volume of fans’ chatter for Vaxis 2 and what that will entail are loading up the band’s social media pages.

Coheed and Cambria is a rare band whose music can transcend scenes and effortlessly cross genres of rock – from indie to progressive, to metal and pop-punk to classic rock. The band is frequently compared to progressive, operatic rock bands of the ‘70s, ala Queen, Supertramp, or Rush due to their thrilling concept albums which take you on a grand journey of sounds and often clock-in around 110 mins, but still somehow include sugary pop-laden hooks.

The group’s following has grown steadily every album, partly due to their ferocious live show that brings fans to their knees with an equally expansive light show. This summer, the band will be performing songs from their expansive catalog, and we can only imagine they’ll pull a few new tricks up their sleeves.

Both bands began their careers 20 years ago this year and last toured together in 2003.

Painful and perverse, intimate, and obnoxious, aggressively heavy and irresistibly catchy, confusingly profound and primitively pedestrian – The Used transforms songs into anthems. The reckless honesty and unrelenting dedication that saw The Used kick down doors at radio and MTV, for a generation of disenfranchised post-hardcore provocateurs, persists today. It is newly remade with a sly shimmer that never sacrifices the band’s enchanting anarchy or restless soul.

Heartwork, the band’s eighth studio album (2020), arrives with the unbound spirit of the pair of platinum albums that first introduced The Used to the world, mixed with the dramatic flair of their gold-certified third. The emotion, sincerity, and vulnerability found on The Used (2002) and In Love and Death (2004) are more urgent and insistent than ever on Heartwork, a diverse 16-song offering filled with double entendre upon triple entendre. It traverses a thematic gamut of self-examination, hyper-literate exploration, political pyromania, and keenly self-aware yet unrestrained whimsy.

Throughout this pandemic, the artist Jesse Forte, known as Jforte, has continued to do what he has done his whole career since he began making music in 2013: push the boundaries of his music and what he can do as an artist. Jforte is constantly creating and expanding as he has out a new song every week over the course of the pandemic (55+ weeks). Throughout his career he has also founded his business “Young Revolutionary Minds,” hosts the YRM podcast, wrote three books, launching products, and training to become an astronaut, all while giving back to and empowering his community. His song “Make It Happen” is culmination of his drive, story he wants to put out into the world to inspire others. We had the opportunity to ask Jforte about his career and what’s next for the artist:

You stated that making music consistently throughout the pandemic was a goal of yours, and you’ve clearly done that with one song produced each week for 55+ weeks. Where did the idea of weekly songs come from and why was it so important to be weekly? 

After writing my third book, “Make It Happen” and listening to “It’s All In Your Head” 200 times, I realized I needed to be consistent and treat my gift like a job. Once I heard Russ express it the way he did, it made sense to me and I tried it out. So far, it’s been going well and getting better! Being able to put out a song weekly keeps me energized to create. I know that people may not listen right then and there, but the music will be there forever and it’s better to start now than later.

What is the production process like when you are making a new song every week? Is it any different than the production of other work you have made?

At first, I had music I wrote to beats that were famous. Then, I shopped around for beats that made sense for the music I was putting out. I would purchase the beats and write music to them. Once I got the hang of it, I started buying more beats, listening, and then sitting down. [I would use] pen and paper [to] writ[e] down my feelings, thoughts, ideas, concepts and purpose. The more I write, the better I get.

Once I get the lyrics down, I start to rehearse them, call up an engineer, and prep for the studio. I generally have at least 5 songs ready to go, just because I like to truly take advantage of the opportunity of using the booth–time is money. Most of my sessions last between 3- 5 hours.

When I write books, I try to write 2-3 pages a day. When I wrote “Fail Forward Through Success,” I would write in Cartel coffee in Tempe every day, and I wouldn’t leave until I pushed out 3 pages.  Same thing with “Redemption,” and “Make It Happen” was special because I wrote it during the pandemic.

Being someone as busy as you are, burnout seems inevitable. Have there been weeks where it felt impossible to make a song? Where do you look for inspiration in times where motivation may be lacking?

Whenever my mind becomes too loud, I get rest, meditate, take a break and when I feel better, I take a step forward with whatever the goal is. I’m cool with resting, but I’ll never lay down or give up on what I have intended to accomplish. Sometimes it doesn’t happen instantly, but patience and persistence have been the best lessons and gifts I possess. I have an engine that is going to go, whether I am motivated or would rather rest. That was instilled back at Parkview.

Was music always something you wanted to do, or was it more like a passion that snuck up on you? Who were your biggest inspirations when getting into the music industry? 

I was talking to Bow Wow a couple weeks ago on IG live and told him I performed “Basketball” for the talent show.  We bumped Pac in the car when I was 3 and I could hear Rakim through the womb when I was being created. That’s just confirmation that I am supposed to be right where I am and that these conversations are blessings from the universe saying “we got you” and to keep going!

I’ve always wanted to be a rapper. My second-grade teacher told me, “No.” Subconsciously, I listened to her for 20 years. Then, this inner me said to fuck her opinion and be happy. I knew I wouldn’t be happy if I wasn’t pursuing what was in me. That why it’s important to be around people that lift you up and let you dream!

My influences are Jforte and Yé– fun fact: I performed Roses at America’s Got Talent. They liked it but I didn’t make it past the 1st round. [Also,] Drake, Immortal Technique, Uncle Snoop, Meek Mill, Drake, Logic, Doja Cat, Cardi B, Jack Harlow, Bow Wow, Gucci, Rakim, Jay-Z, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Missy Elliott, Big Pun, 50 cent, Red Man, Method Man, HER, Queen Latifah, Lauryn Hill, Pharrell, Michale Jackson, Prince, Queen, Tribe Called Quest, Dr. Dre and so, so many more. I just love good music!

It’s apparent that “Make It Happen” is an important, encouraging phrase for you as it is both a song title as well as the title of your third book; where did that phrase come from and what does it mean to you personally?

“Make It Happen” became even more powerful for me once I started to realize that people enjoyed the song and it pumped them up! “Making It Happen” means that regardless of circumstance, we rise to the occasion. That means meeting a deadline, being there for your loved one or just staying committed to the vision you see within yourself.

My goal is to share my truth in a majority of my music. If you listen to what I say in “Make It Happen,” it’s everything I’ve specifically been through. By the way, I write 100% of my lyrics–no ghost writers or floating pens. I thought I should mention that because I take pride in making the music you hear from me.

You’ve pursued many different avenues throughout your life, from music, writing, and hosting podcasts to getting a technical degree in software engineering, college football, becoming an astronaut and even making a biodegradable toothbrush and charcoal toothpaste. What motivates you to explore so many different paths, many of which people choose as a career rather than trying to do it all at once?

I was a D student in elementary school. I bloomed in middle school and started getting A’s and B’s. Then high school hit, and I was a jock. Then college hit, and I did pretty well. I’ve had a chip on my shoulder most of my life, I think it comes from being an underdog, my upbringing, and just realizing I want the best for myself and the people that enter my life. I definitely haven’t taken an easy road, but I know that I rather take a road less travelled and lead the way than to do what’s easy and regret the journey I could have had.

On your podcast “Young Revolutionary Minds” you share and support people’s journeys in reaching their goals. What led you to decide to share these people’s stories as the topic of your podcast?

One of my favorite podcasters, and the reason why I started that, was because of Lewis Howes. He is a big inspiration to me and I love listening to his podcast, you should check it out! Listening to his [podcast], made me realize I have met amazing people around the world and I’d love to share what they are working on! On top of this, I wanted to build relationships with new people, learn from some of the new leaders of the world, and have something to do while I was figuring out who I was.

You’ve been through lots of highs and lows throughout your life. What advice would you give people, whether it be making it in the music industry, or just achieving their personal goals? What have you learned that you’d like to share with people?

Love yourself. Trust that you are someone to adore, and know that your dreams will manifest when you do the work. Secondly, make sure to fight for what you want. When I say fight, I mean relentlessly go after what you desire. If you don’t know, ask questions, preferably from people who have been there or know how to get there. When it comes to music, don’t be afraid to explore different genres. Put your music out, stop waiting for the perfect time. Right now is perfect and will improve! Lastly, create a vision board and look at it every day. Read it out loud, then do something each day that gets you closer. And dream big!

Being in the public eye you make impressions on people and inspire others. You seem to try to always give back to communities and try to have positive energy that you’re putting out into the world. What message or feeling are you trying to put out to the world? Why is it so important for you to have that positive energy you’re exuding?

Being an artist is a privilege and my vision is to inspire 7 billion people around the world through my voice, ways of life and community. I make a lot of music– some deep, some chill, others scary, and some gangster–but the message I’m putting out is, be you. Cuz I’m me, and I do it better than anyone in the world. 😉 Being me, of course.

In 2020 you came up with the ambition goal to release a new song every week, and you have not stopped. How long do you plan to continue that? What’s next for you in 2021?

I’m going to keep putting music out and when I need a break, I’ll rest. I make music because it’s my passion. In 2021, I’m manifesting opportunities to create music with the people I listen to like Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Bow Wow, Drake Meek Mill and Russ. I plan on finding ways for more people to listen to my music and to be inspired.

Queen The Greatest, a year-long Queen Official YouTube celebration of the most extraordinary songs, performances and achievements from Queen’s story so far, this week revisits a song that would become not just one of Queen’s greatest hits, but also one of the most recognizable tracks in rock history, “We Will Rock You.”

In an exclusive and brand-new interview with Brian May, the legendary guitarist and songwriter shares how this iconic song written for the band’s 1977 News Of The World album came to life, the specific gig that inspired its creation, and what it has come to mean to him.

“Bingley Hall. This great hall in the Midlands. It was heaving. Its all sweaty and hot, the atmosphere is great. Everybodys jumping up and down, making a noise, and what they were doing was singing along. In those days, it was really new I have to tell you. You just didnt go to concerts where people sang to rock bands. But on this particular occasion they didnt stop. I think Id gone to sleep thinking what could an audience do, what could you ask them to do? Theyre all crammed in there, they cant do much, but they can stamp their feet they can clap their hands, and they can sing.”

“It just kind of came to me that we were all part of this scenario where were all young, and full of enthusiasm, we think we can change the world, and we get out there, we will rock you! We Will Rock You means we will change the world, and we feel like we can do it when were young. 

“And then looking ahead to when you get old, what happens when you get old and all this stuff has kind of blown over, and you stand there and you think what happened, did I change the world? What happened, who am I and what is the world to me now?

“I would like to leave the planet knowing that I just made a little bit of difference to the amount of decency that there is in the world. Not sure I can do that, but Im still trying. So that in a nutshell is what We Will Rock You is about.” – Brian May.

After seven years together, Queen’s dream of creative and financial independence would finally come true. A look behind the scenes at that pivotal moment, featuring archive footage of Freddie, John and Roger, as well as a rare interview with the band’s long term manager, Jim Beach.

This week’s Queen The Greatest takes a look behind the scenes at one of the most significant moments in Queen’s history – the moment where one of their ultimate goals was realized: Queen’s Independence Day.

Last week’s episode focused on bassist John Deacon and the hits he provided for Queen. Deacon again features prominently in this week’s episode, in which the band reveals the dire straits they were in– even after three hit albums. The episode also explains how John’s steady hand and acumen brought Queen to one of the most significant points in its career: the moment they finally achieved their goal of financial and creative independence.

John reveals: “We didnt get a penny of record royalties from the first three albums. What we were looking at in that point in time was basically to just look after ourselves and do it completely on our own.”

Roger Taylor: “Its the long road to artistic, financial freedom which is so hard to find if youre successful to any degree cos theres a million sharks out there.” 

In early 1978, just before they embarked on recording their Jazz album, Queen finally took full control of their business affairs :setting up three entities to operate and manage their creative endeavors: Queen Productions Limited, Queen Music Limited and Queen Films Limited. This was at the time a highly unusual move for a band, but testament to their belief in their forward musical journey.

For the day-to-day running of the business, Queen turned to Jim Beach, who they had first met in 1975 when the band’s quest for financial independence truly began. It was a meeting that left a lasting impression on Jim.

He recalls that first meeting: “I first met Queen when I was a solicitor at Harbottle and Lewis in London. I was a partner, and I was running what was then a very fledgling music department. It was a show-business firm, and we were used to fairly bizarre clients, but I remember when Queen arrived, the receptionist telephoned me and said, ‘Mr. Beach, Queen are here,’ and I said.’Yes, fine, would you like to send them up.’ And she whispered down the phone, she said, ‘have you seen them?’” 

“And I said, ‘well yes,’ she said, ‘well one of thems got nail varnish on. And I said, ‘well really?’ ‘Yes, black nail varnish. And I said, ‘well fine,’ ‘yes, but its only on one hand. And I said, ‘dont be silly, come on, send them up’. I always remember Freddie walked in first, they sat down, and Freddie kicked straight off by saying, weve recorded three albums, our managers just bought his second Rolls Royce, and were on sixty quid a week, so somethings wrong.” 

But it wasn’t just the business side where Queen wanted to be masters of their own destiny; their News of The World album had proved that in the studio they were also ready to take full control.

John Deacon: ”It comes to a stage where all you really need is an engineer, because the idea of balancing and sounds you want, an artist or musician should really know what they want. And the only person needed to implement that is an engineer. And when youre doing a mix, when youre mixing down the track from the tapes, I mean its setting it up and then we actually sit down and work the controls as well.”

On that occasion, long-time Queen Engineer Mike Stone had become the invaluable assistant that enabled the band to enjoy the creative freedom they craved in the studio. 

This independence had been hard fought for, and after seven years together, when most bands might be coming to their natural end, Queen had finally successfully maneuvered themselves into a position where they could go from strength to strength. 

And it’s fair to say, the best was yet to come.
