NELLY – NELLYVILLE

Two decades ago today, Nelly unveiled his legendary second full-length offering, Nellyville, on June 25, 2002. Twenty years later, the St. Louis-raised GRAMMY® Award-winning hip-hop icon, actor, producer, and philanthropist presents the album on vinyl for the very first time July 29, 2022. The special 2LP release is available for pre-order in multiple configurations through UMe/Republic now.

 Pre-order—HERE.

Upon arrival, Nellyville bowed at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 and eventually earned a 7x-platinum certification from the RIAA buoyed by smashes such as the inescapable double-platinum “Hot In Herre,” “Dilemma” [feat. Kelly Rowland], “#1,” “Pimp Juice, Work It [feat. Justin Timberlake], and more. Both Hot In Herre and Dilemma captured #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. He also took home a GRAMMY® Award in the category of “Best Male Rap Solo Performance” for “Hot In Herre” out of three nominations, including “Album of the Year” and “Best Rap Album. Speaking to its influence, Nellyville stands out as one of the “Top 15 Best-selling Rap Albums of All-Time.” It even lent its title to his hit reality show of the same name!

Additionally, Urban Legends will unleash a special Deluxe Edition of Nellyville with four bonus tracks. These include Not In My House and Kings Highway as well as the Copenhaniancs Remix of “Work It” and Corporate Mix of “Hot In Herre. Check out the full tracklisting of the Standard Vinyl and Deluxe Editions below.

To celebrate the news, Nelly just uncovered the MTV non-movie version of the “#1” music video, which original graced the Soundtrack to the Academy Award-winning classic, Training Day, as well as videos for “Work It,” “N Dey Say,” and Wadsyaname,” for the first time ever on the YouTube platform. Watch the videos HERE.

Regarding the record, Nelly commented, Nellyville was the real moment when we realized our impact. The city, the whole Midwest, it was just Nellyville. Everybody that helped bring this project to life made it monumental and that’s why it still rings out like we just dropped it twenty years later.”

Brett Kissel × 98° – Ain’t the Same

Fans of country and pop music alike are in luck: platinum-selling country artist Brett Kissel has released a new single in collaboration with pop and R&B vocal group 98°, titled “Ain’t the Same.” The track is available on all streaming platforms. Listen HERE.

The upbeat song tells the story of a narrator professing his feelings to the love of his life, explaining that life “ain’t the same” without her. The track also features a clever chorus that parallels the narrator’s relationship and famous pairings that just aren’t quite right when not together. With vivid lyrics such as “the beach ain’t the same without the sun / Coke ain’t the same without the rum / Vegas needs them neon lights / tequila needs that lime,” the song puts a fresh, lighthearted spin on the concept of finding one’s perfect match.

Kissel felt inspired to write the song for his wife, Cecilia, alongside co-writers Karen Kosowski and Tim Nichols. He explained, “We kept landing on how much sweeter everything is when we get to experience life’s gifts with the people we cherish most… and, how things just ‘Ain’t the Same’ if you’re missing the key ingredient. For me, that’s my wife Cecilia, who was the inspiration for the song.”

“Ain’t the Same” also offers a unique blend of pop and modern country. The single highlights Kissel’s warm, rich vocals and ability to express emotions with his music. Kissel’s voice, paired with the infectious harmonies of 98°, works together to convey the joy of spending life with that particular person.

Kissel described his excitement for working with the group, explaining, “98° is such an iconic group, and the fact that they are making their first foray into the country music space with me is such an honor. They’ve collaborated and had massive hits with legends like Mariah Carey and Stevie Wonder, so to work with them on this project and have a blast with them in-studio and on our video shoot in LA… it’s the coolest thing.”

About 98°

98° has sold over 10 million records worldwide and achieved eight top 40 singles in the U.S. From the late 90s to the early ‘00s, the group reached top-five on the Billboard Hot 100 with the songs “Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche),” “Because of You,” “The Hardest Thing” and collaborated with the great Stevie Wonder on the hit “Thank God I Found You” (with Mariah Carey and Joe) as featured artists. “Ain’t The Same” marks 98°‘s first foray into Country Music and comes on the heels of their 25th career Anniversary Year.

Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show

By: Skyler Johnson

The Super Bowl Halftime Show is always a performance to remember and is oftentimes defining for an artist. Audiences are consistently provided with top-of-the-line choreography, special effects, and artistic direction. This year was no different, with performances by five legendary hip hop artists, including Dr. Dre, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige, and Snoop Dogg.

Unlike other past performances, Super Bowl LVI’s didn’t include a ton of huge, fancy getups and expensive sets. And, this is one of the few performances where there weren’t dramatic changes to the set and outfits throughout. No one performed on a chariot like Madonna, or on a metallic lion, like Katy Perry. Instead, the entire set was five white stages that looked like buildings, placed in a row, on top of a large, overhead shot of Compton that carpeted the field.

This Half Time performance made history as it was the first time there were five headliners and the first time the artists were predominantly hip hop/rap artists. Rappers have performed during the event beforehand (including Puff Daddy and Nelly) but never have there been that many at a time.

Another unique aspect of this Super Bowl was the color scheme. Most of the performers wore dark or earthy tones, save for Mary J Blige and Snoop Dogg. The former wore a striking, silvery-white outfit and the latter wore a regal blue suit.

There were sequences of intense choreography but not from the performing artists. The result is that the music shined through. And the track list was legendary. “The Next Episode” and “Lose Yourself” are just examples of some of the great, classic music that was played during this show. Unforgettable moments included a sequence where 50 Cent rapped “In Da Club” upside down, reminiscent of the iconic original music video. Eminem performed “Lose Yourself” with Anderson Paak on drums.

Kendrick Lamar delivered an intoxicating and beautifully choreographed performance of his hit songs “M.A.A.D. City” and “Alright.” For many, they saw their childhood compiled into one performance given how many artists and songs were represented.

At the center of it all is Dr. Dre, who produced many of the songs, and discovered many of the artists that were represented here. The artist who founded Dre Beats and other iconic brands was celebrated during this performance.

This performance came at a very interesting time for rapper and entrepreneur Snoop Dogg. The rapper is known as both a Billboard no. 1 artist and an actor (Beach Bum, Soul Plane), who also hosts a cooking show with Martha Stewart. He has now purchased Death Row Records, a record label founded by Dr. Dre.

Overall, this Half Time Show, while not flashy or extravagant, was certainly one for the books.

NELLY’S DILEMMA Video Hits 1 Billion Views on YouTube

UMe/Republic announced today, Nelly’s single “Dilemma” from Nellyville is now officially part of YouTube’s Billion Views Club. Watch the video, here.

“It is both humbling and what every artist hopes for, to see your work from 20 years ago still getting such love from fans old and new. Super dope that a song made before YouTube existed is getting so much support now and shout out to Nelly fans and to my girl Kelly Rowland who helped make this song a hit when we made it and still a hit today!” – Nelly

Reaching 1 billion views on YouTube, “Dilemma” is one of only a handful of Rap/Hip-Hop music videos from the Pre-YouTube era to achieve this milestone. Nelly joins a diverse and elite group of artists from this era to do the same, including 50 Cent, Nirvana, Queen, Guns N’ Roses, Whitney Houston, The Cranberries and a-ha.

The video for “Dilemma” was directed by and produced by GRAMMY® Award winning Ryan Bowser pka GHOST (Monica, 112, Tyrese, Bow Wow).

The second song released from the Nellyville album, “Dilemma” featuring Kelly Rowland was a No. 1 single across multiple Billboard charts (Hot 100, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop/Top 40/Rhythmic). Nelly’s “Hot in Herre” was No. 1 on the charts, until it was replaced by his own single “Dilemma.” The smash hit went on to win that year’s GRAMMY® Award for Best Rap/Sung Performance.

“Dilemma” secured its place in the hearts of Nelly fans over the last 20 years and has recently been boosted by social media popularity from both existing fans and a whole new fanbase lip-syncing to the iconic song.

Born Cornell Iral Haynes Jr. in Austin, Texas, and eventually settling in St. Louis, Nelly is credited as putting St. Louis hip hop music on the map. The rapper showed early promise, forming The St. Lunatics in 1993 with his childhood friends, MCs “Ali” Jones, Torhi “Murphy Lee” Harper, Lavell “City Spud” Webb, and Robert “Kyjuan” Cleveland. After huge local success and persistence with their unique sound of southern-style hip hop, Republic Records signed Nelly and the St. Lunatics.

Nelly’s Official Artist Channel on YouTube features many of his classic videos remastered in HD.

Titles available on Nelly’s Official Artist Channel include:

Country Grammar

Ride Wit Me

Over And Over

Over the last 12 months Nelly has amassed over 600M views across YouTube and his Official Artist Channel has amassed over 4M subscribers to date.

Nelly’s star power is undeniable. With over 24 gold and platinum records, 3 No. 1 albums, over 4 million YouTube subscribers and multiple record-breaking videos, Nelly continues to celebrate milestones, anniversaries, and new chart-topping hits. Nelly just celebrated 20 years of his diamond-selling Country Grammar and now 20 years of Nellyville while releasing a new country inspired album called Heartland due out this summer. He is also currently filming a new season of Hollywood Husbands and touring the US.
