At the peak of the year, music, beats and dancing brought together a crowd of 10,000 attendees to Costa Rica for 2020’s Ocaso Underground Music Festival – the world’s largest rave in the jungle. Even the leatherback turtles, howling monkeys and crocodiles were head bobbing.

The Ocaso Underground Music Festival, which engaged on January 9th – 13th, united travelers, ticos and seasoned ravers alike to Tamarindo, Costa Rica, off the coast of the Pacific Ocean for five days of electronic music bliss. The jubilee was established by founder Devin Ellis in 2018; and it just culminated its fourth semester, with plans to return in January 2021, proving a successful run for one of the most emerging EDM festivals on the planet. 

What makes this carnival so sui generis, aside from a stellar bill of DJs including Maceo Plex, Äme, Doc Martin, Justin Martin, Magdalena, Shiba San, Seth Troxler and Artba, might just be the visually striking and lushful setting of CR. The grounds, known as the Lesenda Retreat, centers around a trilithic stage composed of metal trusses for performers, complete with a towering geometric visual screen synchronized to the music, pulsating lasers, fog machines, pyrotechnics and go-go dancers. Apart from hypnotizing technical components conjured up by architectural wizards, the surrounding landscape and warm weather provided a tranquil atmosphere to enjoy the fiesta in, enhanced by art installations sprinkled throughout, providing a truly remarkable habitat. 

Let’s talk about the sound! Imagine being at the On The Run II tour with Beyoncé and Jay-Z, state-of-the-art subwoofers and tweeters pinging throughout the venue, delivering clean and crisp vibrant instrumentation. Of course, this added fan excitement to every set.

Viewers were able to use tokens for transportation, food and drinks, providing added security from petty theft and loose cash. Overall safety was key with tons of guards at every entrance alongside of roaming escorts. We all wore sparkly color-coded wristbands to identify our level of participation – GA vs VIP. Staff members wore official reflective tanks and shirts to be easily accessible.

A short 15 minute-bus drive on a vintage yellow school bus brought participants to the festivities. Guests were offered an assortment of carte du jour options to replenish their prance-exhausted bodies with a number of locally and globally known chefs preparing flatbread pizzas, gyros, keto bowls, tacos as well as protein shakes.

Saturday was the most distinctive night of the event, with people from all over the globe, dressed in their most eye-catching ensembles, echoing the avant-garde fashion of other fairs such as EDC, Ultra, Tomorrowland, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and Coachella. Ocaso brought a parade of colors infused with futuristic and organic elements blended seamlessly into garbs straight out of an alien planet, welcoming and embracing all. 

The festival wrapped with a pool party at base camp, the Best Western Tamarindo Vista Villas. After a five-day outer body experience of infectious dance music, a sort of culinary delights, cozy lodging options, and the beautiful backdrop of the rugged rainforested, Central America, this is one masquerade which many should add to their list. 

Missed out on the fun this year? Don’t fret, as the festival plans to return the weekend of January 7-11, 2021. Ticketing packages from this past year ranged from $19.00 to $59.00 for single day passes, a two-day Friday and Saturday pass for $89.00 and a 5-day-full-weekend pass for $119.00, a great deal for those who can’t get enough from just one night. Splash House takes place every summer, once in June and August, within the Palm Springs region. It’s a poolside extravaganza where world renowned EDM artists perform well into the evening at participating hotel properties. After hours (which offers tickets for purchase separately from the weekend’s activities is held at the rustic Air Museum which transforms into a what many believe to be an alien mothership. If you’re seeking a good time with a both youthful yet mature crowd, then this is your locus.

Two of our squad members from 360 MAGAZINE drove down to immerse themselves in this one-of-a-kind experience.

Q. How does one prepare for SH?

A. Pack lots of water, coconut water, Powerade(electrolytes), light clothing and sunblock.

Q. Did you pack light? Did you bring snacks?

A. We stopped at the grocery story for snacks. Cheese and crackers, bagels, eggs, locks and lots of fruit.

Q. How was the drive on the way to Coachella Valley from LA? What time of day did you leave? What time do you recommend leaving?

A. The drive wasn’t too bad. We made it in 3.5 hours, considering we left during rush hour at 5:30pm. I highly recommend to take the day off work and get out to PS early in the day. To set in, relax and mentally prepare for an amazing weekend.

Q.Where did you and your friends rendezvous at?

A. We met at my friends hotel, the Renaissance.

Q. Did you feel the transportation provided was adequate?Or did you hang out at a certain venue or space while at the event?

A. The shuttles took us to different hotels and provided us with cold water which I thought was AMAZING!

Q. If you stayed overnight, was it at a participating hotel or Airbnb? Was it worth it? Did you feel like you missed out on any action?

A. We definitely didn’t miss out on anything by staying at a near by Airbnb. It was nice to disconnect and rest up for the next day.

Q. Where did you pull your inspo for your daily style from? Magazines? Previous festivals? Celebrities on Instagram? Was there a common thread at the festival?

A. I pulled my inspiration for my daily styles from the splash house website/instagram.

Q. Diplo was a last minute addition to the SH lineup, how did you hear about it? Announcement on site or word of mouth? Describe them in a few words.

A. I saw that DIPLO was added on the lineup through Splash House IG. Our most memorable moment at splash house was definitely DIPLO on set. He was magical!!

Q. Did you feel after hours was worth additional money? While at the Air Museum during the midnight hours, how did it make you feel?

A. The after hours is truly my favorite so it’s worth every penny!

Q. Overall crowd at SH was on a scale to 1 to 10, how would you rate if 10 being the highest?

A. I’m obsessed with everything about splash house so I rate it a 10. Bringing DIPLO out this year was dope!

Q. Please rate the performances which you saw and why you gave them that rate.

A. We only saw DIPLO and Ekali. They were sick.

Q. Would you attend SH next year and why?

A. I will definitely be attending next year, without a doubt!

Q. Is this the type of event you would go alone or with a group of friends/co-workers?

A. This is the type of event you go with your close friends.

FISHER Releases “You Little Beauty”

Grammy -nominated DJ and producer FISHER has dropped new single “You Little Beauty,” released today, May 10th. Listen to the track HERE.

The track, which samples the vocals of late disco and house legend Loleatta Holloway, is released via the Australian artist’s own Catch & Release label and Astralwerks. The track evoked a particularly strong reaction when dropped in the midst of FISHER’s massively well-received set at Coachella last month.

“You Little Beauty” marks the larger-than-life character’s first release of 2019, following on from last years “Losing It.” An instant hit, the track has now racked up more than 66 million Spotify streams.

This preceded a sold out Catch & Release party at Miami Music Week, and FISHER’s summer is shaping up to be just as busy. With slots at Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas and Movement Detroit before the end of the month, he will then embark on an extensive European tour, taking in Parklife, Lovebox, Leeds & Reading, and more.

Indie artist OTR has signed to Astralwerks, who released his new single, “Heart” ft. Shallou, today. Shallou’s searing vocals paired with OTR’s evocative piano create a poignant yet ultimately transcendent track with the indelible refrain “We get out alive/in your heart.”

Shallou an independent artist who has earned SiriusXM #1 spots with tracks like “Lie” and “Begin” and landed on the Billboard Dance charts played “Heart” live for the massive crowd that gathered in the Sahara Tent for his set at both weekends of Coachella 2019.

Ryan, the 26-year old aerospace engineer-turned-producer behind OTR, uncovered his passion for music in 2012, when he began tinkering on a dusty, run-down piano in his college dorm lobby to break up the routine of classes and studying. Shortly thereafter, he picked up a guitar and began experimenting with Logic on his MacBook Pro. Taking an internship in Japan in 2014, he found himself living in the small town of in Kurashiki, with no friends and a major language barrier. To combat the isolation, he purchased a keyboard and a train pass and spent all his free time making music and traveling to bigger cities. When he returned to the States, Ryan moved into a neighborhood on the outskirts of downtown Cincinnati known as “Over-the-Rhine” or OTR. The once-neglected area had undergone a renaissance that mirrored his own journey of discovery as music went from hobby to career goal, so it became the ideal name for his project.

As an independent artist, OTR has released a series of singles and the 2018 EP Unfold, racking up more than 7 million cumulative streams across DSPs. Coachella wrapped up last weekend and social media buzzed for 30 days, with more than 8.3 million mentions and 49.8 million engagements (likes, retweets, shares) focused on the music festival, according to international social media analytics firm Talkwalker

Influencer John Charles had two of the top trending Coachella articles on news and social over the last 30 days with 386,000 and 378,000 shares and likes, respectively, but a Vlog Squad video was number one with more than 431,000 shares and likes, Talkwalker reported.  The top three were:
