With a Style of Their Own

The NuAuthentic Celebrates Fluid And Transgender Individuals

By Photographer Roger Moenks with Shelly Brown

Roger Moenks is a leading celebrity and fashion photographer who has published several books highlighting inspirational beauty including The Class of Click (featuring Click Agency’s most notable models), Inheriting Beauty, and I Am Eco-Warrior: Portraits From The Front Lines Of The Sustainability Revolution. However, The NuAuthentic is his first book portraying the transgender community through individual personal expression, creative freedom, and the ability to embrace one’s identity and proclaim it with a spectacular boldness.

The NuAuthentic is a 196-page visual exploration and portrayal of 100 of the most intriguingly beautiful genderfluid and transgender individuals in New York City.  The book by photographer Roger Moenks with curator Shelly Brown sets out to underscore the triumphs, struggles and powerful beauty of its non-conformist subjects who are “free to be” through self-expression, self-acceptance and love. Life may have been much simpler when people were divided into two genders, male and female,  but today’s new reality reveals that a full-spectrum of beauty may be found through the freedom to express oneself in non-traditional ways and through a rainbow of colors.

“Today gender is actually an ever-expanding continuum comprised of authentic warriors who dared to be who they want to be and claim their right to express themselves freely, making them all the more beautiful and intriguing subjects to photograph,” says Roger Moenks. “The exciting thing about today’s social landscape is that you can’t assume anyone is either a ‘he’ or a ‘she,’ nor can you presume they are just one of those two possibilities. It’s up to them to tell you how they identify, and you just might be surprised by what they say.”

“Gender is optional, expression is everything,” adds Shelly Brown.  “Diversity and differences are to be celebrated and supported. My role as curator for The NuAauthentic was a labor of love since I recently lost my 28-year old trans sister who struggled in life and found solace and love in the transgender community which gave her the freedom and acceptance to reveal her beautiful soul. The book is a testament to those trailblazers who took abuse from their families, schools, communities, and stayed true to their individual beauty. We salute you with love, acceptance and respect.”

Transgender and genderfluid people have always come to the nightlife, a world of inclusion where one is accepted and applauded for the very features that may have gotten them bullied in the high school cafeteria and ostracized in everyday life.

Susanne Bartsch known as “Queen of the Night” for her iconic club nights, special events and show productions representative of New York City nightlife graces the cover of The NuAuthentic.  She was instrumental in promoting the drag queen and House Ball scenes and also gave rise to the careers of such notables as RuPaul and Marc Jacobs. She continues to create an Avant Garde club landscape in which people are art and use their looks to make bold fashion statements and continues to provide the space and freedom for people to express themselves.

Rob Smith, CEO and founder of The Phluid Project, the world’s first gender-free retail store and global movement, is also portrayed in the book. The concept of non-gender clothing designed by Phluid and independent artists were carried by Phluid and featured throughout the book.

MILA JAM is a model, actress and pop recording “artivist” who had always celebrated diversity and the different gender expressions. According to MILA JAM, “The NuAuthentic is a snapshot in time that commemorates the trans movement as another slice of life to be celebrated. As we find strikingly beautiful differences in plant and animal species, we can also find exquisite differences in how we view humanity.”

The NuAuthentic speaks to Bradley Miller, who is also portrayed in the book, because it is representative of “who I am.” “The trans community has to face pain and adversity to be who we are, but it also shows the world that we can be loved and beautiful.”

Trans people are continually targeted with bigotry and hatred. And so, trans and gender nonconforming people are left to fight the battles of everyday life, which they do with flair, activism, and chutzpah. The NuAuthentic captures them in all their gutsy glory and will retail for $75.00 on Amazon.com beginning December 10th.  Proceeds from The NuAuthentic will be 100% donated to LGBTQ youth programs.

James Bay – Live Performance

In Case You Missed It: JAMES BAY // Live In London

Watch the performance HERE

Today, James Bay performed a 45 minute set on YouTube in support of #SaveOurVenues. During the performance Bay performed some fan favorite songs, three new songs (including his new single “Chew On My Heart”), and even a surprise Whitney Houston cover of “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”!

The performance included a donation link in support #SaveOurVenues – the UK crowd fundraiser started to protect UK grassroots music venues at risk for permanent closure due to COVID-19.The donation link will be live until July 20th.

Born in Hitchin and having extensively toured venues on the UK music scene whilst building his career, this is a cause which is extremely close to James’ heart. On his motivation to support the cause, James says: “Big or small, spending time honing your craft and performing in venues is vital on the journey to becoming a successful touring and recording artist. We must never live in a world where live music venues don’t exist. They are as important for the artist as they are for the countless visitors and of course the dedicated staff that devote themselves to running those rooms like clockwork. Venues offer a joy, an escape and a magic you just don’t experience through a screen or even through a stereo speaker. At all costs, we must save our venues.

Clive Davis x Tisch Gala

Clive Davis will be honored at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts 2020 Gala.

“As both a music industry luminary and an essential member of the Tisch community, Clive Davis’s impact is immeasurable,” said Allyson Green, Dean, NYU Tisch School of the Arts. “Clive has continually reinvented the idea of the creative producer during his lifelong commitment to championing music artists. At Tisch, Clive’s dedication and generosity are reflected in his significant contributions to the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, where his legacy and influence will reverberate with future generations of music makers. We’re excited to honor Clive and his fundamental role in developing an institute unlike any other in the world.”

In 2002, Davis announced a $5 million gift to the school for the creation of a new Department of Recorded Music, the first of its kind to offer a four-year, degree-granting undergraduate program that recognizes the creative producer as an artist and musical recording itself as a creative medium. In 2011, Davis made an additional gift of $5 million to NYU Tisch to expand the department, creating the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, home to stellar working professionals and a generous scholarship fund to support young talent from around the world.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Davis was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of New York University, where he received his B.A. magna cum laude. He later graduated with honors from Harvard Law School. As the record industry’s most innovative and influential executive, Davis has had a profound effect on the world of music.

Davis is directly responsible for the signing of many landmark artists, among them Janis Joplin’s Big Brother and The Holding Company; Blood, Sweat & Tears; Chicago; Santana; Boz Scaggs; Loggins & Messina; Laura Nyro; Billy Joel; Bruce Springsteen; Aerosmith; and Earth, Wind and Fire. In addition, he attracted to the label Neil Diamond; Pink Floyd; Herbie Hancock; and The Isley Brothers. He played a key role in the careers of Simon & Garfunkel, Sly & The Family Stone, Bob Dylan, Barbra Streisand and Andy Williams. Thereafter, under Davis’s leadership at Arista Records, Whitney Houston, Barry Manilow, Patti Smith, Kenny G, Sarah McLachlan, Monica and Dido all launched their careers. The label also attracted such important artists as Aretha Franklin, The Grateful Dead, The Kinks, Lou Reed, the Eurythmics, Dionne Warwick, Daryl Hall & John Oates and Carly Simon. Davis had Arista finance LaFace Records, and thereafter LaFace built an outstanding roster of hit-making artists including TLC, Toni Braxton, Usher, OutKast and Pink. At Bad Boy Records, financed by Arista, he helped grow the artist roster to include Notorious B.I.G., Faith Evans, Mase, 112 and Sean “Puffy” Combs. Davis also created J Records, which emerged as a dominant music force with chart-topping albums by Alicia Keys, Maroon 5, Annie Lennox, Luther Vandross, Rod Stewart and Jennifer Hudson. Since 2008, Davis has served as Chief Creative Officer of Sony Music Entertainment. Currently, Davis is also working as an executive producer on an eight-part television series produced by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard for Disney on the life of Aretha Franklin.

A five-time Grammy Award-winner, Davis has received numerous awards and recognitions over the course of his career. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and he received the Grammy Trustees Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), which also named the prestigious state of the art theater inside the Grammy Museum the “Clive Davis Theater.” He is also the recipient of many humanitarian honors from organizations such as the T.J. Martell Foundation, the Anti-Defamation League and the American Cancer Society. Davis received the Humanitarian Award from the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) for his efforts in the battle against AIDS.

Davis is also the best-selling author of Clive: Inside The Record Business and his autobiography, The Soundtrack of My Life. His life was documented by the Ridley Scott firm in the award-winning documentary film, Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives.

Kim Viera “Here For Ya”

KIM VIERA RELEASES NEW SINGLE “HERE FOR YA” TODAY

Puerto Rican singer and songwriter Kim Viera releases her brand new single “Here For Ya” today in both English and Spanglish.

Listen to “Here For Ya”: HERE

The track is powered by a throwback beat and sultry production, building toward a seismic and soaring refrain carried by Kim’s powerhouse voice. The two versions in English and Spanglish speak to her worldwide appeal.

In many ways, Kim Viera was destined to merge cultures in her music. Growing up of Puerto Rican descent in an artist-friendly New York household, her parents both worked in the entertainment industry. Dad launched, owned, and operated a live production company, and Mom could be heard as a backup singer for Willie Colon, Ruben Bladés, and more. Yearly vacations in Puerto Rico represented that balance as the travel mixtape spanned Selena, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, La India, Sia, Brandy, and Whitney Houston. A vocal powerhouse, she made her introduction on viral hits alongside YouTube mega-star Kurt Schneider in between writing for superstars such as Lil Wayne. In 2016, she landed a major label deal with Republic Records and made waves by contributing “Tribe” to the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for Pitch Perfect 3. This anthem quickly clocked 1.8 million Spotify streams. Along the way, she honed her “American Latina” style and set fire with her single “Como” feat. Daddy Yankee. It exploded as an international smash with 40.8 million cumulative streams and counting, while the music video surpassed 24 million views in under a year. Meanwhile, she garnered acclaim from Billboard and NPR who pegged it among “Our Favorite Latin Songs This Week,” upon release, setting the stage for her 2019 anthem “Here For Ya.”

Halston dare, 360 MAGAZINE

Halston Dare

Singer-songwriter and popular online content creator, Halston Dare drops new single Something Special today.

Halston Dare is not your average pop star. Growing up in a musical family to a Cuban American, immigrant father, Halston grew up with music in her blood. As a child, she grew up listening to classic 70’s, 80’s and 90’s music from the likes of Patti Labelle, Phil Collins, Bryan Adams, Donna Summer and Whitney Houston. As one of the brightest young voices in both the musical and digital influencer space, Halston is used to wearing many hats. “I want to be known as the girl who does it all. Music, fashion, make-up, sports. I want people to know that I’m a real person.”

Halston’s creative savvy and relatable personality has helped her amass a following of over 150,000 fans on instagram.

Halston started sharing covers of her favorite songs on Youtube a few years ago. She then branched out into the world of makeup, beauty and lifestyle. Her fanbase grew rapidly and when she finally released her single “Drowned Love”, it was received to much fanfare. Her fans instantly connected to the raw emotion and personal narrative. Over the years, Halston has fostered a uniquely deep and personal relationship with her fans. “Lots of fans I’m actually friends with. I rely on them as much as they rely on me. Let’s be friends, tell me about your day. Tell me about your problems.”

More About Halston:

Unlike many young musicians, Halston did not wait to get discovered. By age 11, the plucky and vivacious curly-haired preteen was googling agencies and managers and setting up her own meetings. That year, she heard an advertisement calling for aspiring young singers and Halston jumped at the opportunity. She begged her parents to attend the audition and because they saw her passion and dedication, allowed her to go. She attended the audition and the agency ended up flying her to Orlando, where she sang Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing” in front of 5,000 people. That’s when Halston and her family realized the stage was Halston’s home.

She then picked up piano and started vocal lessons. It was actually her first vocal coach who introduced Halston to song writers and producers and helped hone her talents. She started writing original music that she felt compelled to make. She says her lyrical inspirations come from a mix of real life and fantasy. “I love writing based on fairytales and stories I make up in my head. I love sharing my hopes, fantasies and daydreams.” Recently, Halston has been taking a much more personal approach to songwriting, writing about personal situations and real life events. Her new single “Something Special”, details a real-life situation about infatuation, dealing with ego and the misadventures of youth.

Aside from music, Halston is passionate about global issues like environmentalism, animal rights and female empowerment. Halston’s message has always been about empowering young women and making them feel important, beautiful and valued from the inside out. “In today’s Instagram world, we’re always comparing ourselves to these fake, filtered photos and that’s not really realistic. That’s just what people want them to see.” She says. “I want young girls to know that they’re beautiful the way they are and that they don’t have to look like an Instagram photo to be enough.”

For the future, Halston is excited to keep performing, making original music and connecting even deeper with her fans and followers. As Halston looks ahead she advises her followers to chase their dreams and follow their hearts, “If you want to sing, SING! Reflect you, show everyone how you can be the best you can be. If someone tells you, you can’t. Don’t listen to them. The only person who can stop you is you.”
