Maserati MC20 Cielo

Maserati MC20 Cielo made its North American debut today with an unveiling ceremony during The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, a prestigious automotive event in California. The Quail, part of the influential “Car Week” in the town of Monterey, was the perfect backdrop to share the open-topped version of Maserati’s newest super sports car with North American audiences.

Global Chief Executive Officer, Davide Grasso, was in attendance for the ceremony alongside Maserati Americas CEO, Bill Peffer, and Head of Maserati Design, Klaus Busse. Crowds of excited VIP guests and members of the media enjoyed the unveiling during a press conference which also showcased the new Maserati Grecale Trofeo SUV, and the Maserati MC20 Coupe. Thousands of guests were able to experience the MC20 Cielo during this year’s annual summer gathering, which has become a pivotal part of United States car culture.

Cielo — which means “sky” in Italian — is the spyder version of the new MC20 super sports car and offers a perfect mix of sportiness and luxury. Unique to the convertible segment, the Cielo features an innovative retractable glass roof with a state-of-the-art electrochromic (smart glass) window that can instantly be transformed from clear to opaque at the touch of a button on a central screen. The roof uses Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) technology to provide a multi-faceted driving experience: it can be all-encompassing with the roof closed and opaque, offer a unique “sky feeling” when the roof is transparent, and allow for a holistic experience with the top down.

The MC20 itself represents a renaissance for the Trident brand as Maserati’s first super sports car in more than a decade. The soul of the MC20 is the revolutionary new Nettuno engine, a 3.0-liter, twin-turbo V6 delivering 630 horsepower (621 U.S. hp) at 7,500 rpm and producing 538 lb-ft of torque from 3,000 rpm. It also marks Maserati’s return to producing its own engines and, notably, is the first engine destined for the road to use an innovative pre-chamber combustion system featuring twin spark plugs, a technology derived from Formula 1 racing.

The MC20 Cielo was developed at the Maserati Innovation Lab and is produced at the historic plant on Viale Ciro Menotti in Modena, making it 100% Made in Italy.

Quail Debut

“Each commission represents a distinct design reflecting an aspect of what Phantom means to its ultimate owner. Many Phantom owners achieve their success through new ideas, unconventional methods, and their own relentless self-belief. The ‘Maverick’ Bespoke persona demonstrates how Phantom adapts to the modern age, asserting a creative, independent character.” Jonathan Simms, Head of Bespoke, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars showcases Phantom Series II for the first time in North America at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering. The stunning commission was unveiled by Rolls-Royce Motors Cars Chief Executive Officer, Torsten Müller-Ötvös. Phantom Series II, the newest expression of the marque’s pinnacle motor car, proposes the broadest range of Bespoke opportunities ever offered by the House of Rolls-Royce.

The designers at Rolls-Royce created Phantom to provide the ultimate blank canvas. To demonstrate the power of Bespoke design with Phantom Series II, the unique Bespoke commission showcased at The Quail has been coined ‘Maverick’ by the Rolls-Royce Bespoke designers.

Phantom’s new expression features two unique Bespoke elements, utilising light and extending the impact of the iconic Starlight Headliner to the exterior. The Pantheon Grille is now illuminated, with each metal vane specifically finished to provide a subtle glow. The headlights are graced with 580 intricate laser-cut bezel starlights. Combined, these create a visual connection with the iconic Starlight Headliner inside and add to Phantom’s nighttime presence.

The exterior is finished in a classic Rolls-Royce two-tone colourway with Black over Monteverde green highlighting a bold, hand applied Peony Pink coachline. The coachline set against the darker colours draws inspiration from the interior colour design. Upon opening the coach doors, one encounters an interior suite of Scivaro Grey offset by a vibrant colour pop from large swatches in Peony Pink. The Obsydian Ayous open pore wood and canadel panelling present a contemporary yet warm look and feel. The Gallery in this special commission features a world first with a unique embroidery design finished in Scivaro Grey with a Peony Pink thread.

The Phantom Series II ‘Maverick’ commission is part of the 2022 Pebble Beach Collection and features a personalised treadplate which reads, ‘Pebble Beach 2022’ Special Commission. The Collection is further complemented with the first ever Black Badge Cullinan in Forbidden Pink and a world premier for a new finish, Ghost in Crystal over Sagano Green. These commissions are offered exclusively through authorised Rolls-Royce Motor Cars retailers and will be on display throughout the weekend of festivities for Monterey Car Week 2022.

Bugatti Bollide and Chiron Super Sport

Bugatti introduced the brand’s two newest hyper sports cars to customers and enthusiasts during the biggest automotive event of the year.

In true Bugatti fashion, the historic French luxury marque made headlines this past weekend at The Quail in Monterey, California, with the North American debut of not one, but two new hyper sports cars–the Chiron Super Sport and the track-focused Bolide.

To officially kick off this time-honored event, Bugatti announced the experimental Bolide will be produced as a few-off model following significant interest from customers. Only 40 of these radically light, four million euro track-oriented machines will be available for purchase, with delivery scheduled for 2024.

In addition to the Bolide, Bugatti presented the new Chiron Super Sport to the U.S. market for the first time. With deliveries scheduled to begin in early 2022, the Super Sport is the ultimate grand tourer designed for top speed, luxury and comfort. Complete with an overhauled 8.0-liter W16 engine, this hypercar produces 1,600 hp and has a net price of 3.2 million euros.

This year, Bugatti showcased a variety of vehicles, including the Chiron Sport, Super Sport, Pur Sport and Bolide at The Quail–A Motorsports Gathering, while the full Super Sport family joined these cars at ‘Le Domaine Bugatti’ at The Lodge at Pebble Beach. On display were the Veyron Super Sport, EB110 Super Sport and the Type 55 Super Sport for customers and Bugatti fans to enjoy.

“The United States is Bugatti’s largest market, so for us to be able to present two brand new hyper sports cars to enthusiasts and collectors in person here is critical for the company,” said Stephan Winkelmann, President of Bugatti. “The two vehicles represent the best of the Bugatti brand, from the enhanced performance capabilities and technological innovation to the ultimate level of luxury and comfort for customers.”

As in years past, Stephan Winkelmann joined other esteemed jury members as they evaluated vehicles taking part in the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

The Quail

Summer always goes by in flash, not unlike the high performance vehicles on display at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering. This year was no exception, and the time has already come to reflect on the event’s many highlights.

For car enthusiasts around the world, The Quail remained among the most memorable dates on the calendar. Here, the finest vintage automobiles and the latest marvels took center stage against a beautiful coastal backdrop. Among this year’s head-turners was the stunning new 2019 Acura NSX in Thermal Orange Pearl, making its public debut at the event. And that Thermal Orange Pearl specialty cocktail was also quite the crowd pleaser.

If you were seeking sporty performance vehicles other than supercars, Acura brought out striking A-Spec® variants of their newest MDX, RDX and TLX models. Since its inception, Acura has been committed to Precision Crafted Performance – on and off the track. And both their production models and motorsports projects showcase the automotive icon’s boundary-breaking ethos that is beautifully showcased at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering.

Pirelli Shines at Monterey Car Week

From August 18, Monterey County became America’s capital of automotive culture. The Monterey Car Week, which ends on August 26, has attracted thousands of enthusiasts, with Pirelli – a vital partner of the world’s most exclusive car manufacturers – playing a starring role.

The Italian firm is sponsor of ‘The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering’, which is one of the key events of the Californian car week, with more than 5000 visitors and 250 cars. Now celebrating its 16th anniversary, this event is synonymous with exclusivity. Starting from the venue: the Quail Lodge & Golf Club in Carmel, an oasis of green set against the backdrop of the imposing Santa Lucia mountains in California.

The brands present among the 250 acres of The Quail are just as impressive. Among them are Pagani, McLaren and Lamborghini – all of whom use Pirelli tires exclusively as original equipment – which have chosen The Quail as the venue to exhibit some of the most important models in their range.

Pirelli is also showcasing some of its most iconic products. First and foremost is the P Zero, the ultra high performance tire chosen by some of the world’s most powerful supercars, many of which are present at the Quail.

The Collezione range also takes pride of place: a family of tires developed by Pirelli for classic cars that combine modern technology with vintage looks. These use cutting edge compounds to offer maximum grip and water evacuation, in order to guarantee the highest standards of safety and dependability without compromising on looks.

As a result, Collezione tires are on many of the classic cars at The Quail, which is just as much about timeless classics as it is about modern cars. Among there are a number of examples of the Lamborghini Espada and Lamborghini Islero, which celebrate their 50th birthdays, not to mention the iconic Porsche 356, which first saw the light of day exactly 70 years ago.

It’s this blend of the past and future, as well as enthusiasm for cars and the finer things in life, which make The Quail one of the jewels in the crown of Monterey Car week. It’s a unique event, where car manufacturers share the space with six gourmet pavilions – including one dedicated to Italian food, which is also sponsored by Pirelli. It all adds up to an unforgettable and uniquely refined atmosphere.

Pirelli and Pagani 10 years of technical partnership at The Quail

The 2018 Quail also marked an important landmark: 10 years of technical partnership between Pirelli and Pagani. Back in 2008, Horacio Pagani first decided to entrust Pirelli with the task of making tires for his increasingly powerful and exclusive hypercars built in Modena.

It was an Italian marriage that got off the best possible start when, only a few months later, a Pagani Zonda equipped with P Zero, set a new record at the Nürburgring. Since then the partnership has gone from strength to strength. Every Pagani car now leaves the factory on made to measure Pirelli tires. This tailor-made approach, a cornerstone of Pirelli’s philosophy, has ensured the highest standards of performance and safety for Pagani since 2008. It’s a genuine partnership, with Pirelli’s engineers working hand in hand with their counterparts at Pagani throughout all the phases of research and development, coming up with compounds and processes that are specifically suited to the characteristics of each model.
