Stephanie June QxA

With the release of her new single and music video for “Cry Baby Cry,” NYC singer Stephanie June delivers a pop ballad that’s “just in time for summer,” capturing the feeling of catharsis, about taking a break from seeking answers, and giving yourself the thing you want most. Filmed at the annual “Dance Walk” in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, the video captures New York in this singular moment in time as it experiences a rebirth, channeling the energy of the summer into “a breezy pop experience.” We sat down with the passionate and talented Stephanie June to chat about her eagerly-awaited release of “Cry Baby Cry,” how the pandemic affected her song writing, and the energy of New York City.

What reaction are you expecting when “Cry Baby Cry” is released?

I think this song is going to make people really happy. I wrote it as an emotional ballad, but then my producers, Daniel Alvarez and Jordan Dunn-Pilz, and I turned it into an upbeat summer pop song.  So the energy is high, but once you peel away that layer, the lyrics bring you to a different place. I imagine people listening to it in the car with the top down, screaming the lyrics uncontrollably. I think people will hear it and think – ‘I’ve felt that, I’ve been there.’

What are you most excited about concerning the release of your new single?

I’m excited to bring some much needed good energy to this world. All of my friends are ready to be free and live their lives this summer. I can’t wait to get to sing this song live. Writing music makes me so happy, but at a certain point you’ve been with a song long enough, and it’s time to give it wings. I hoarded my music for way too long, which I honestly now feel is pretty selfish. So I’m just excited to share it with people and let them love it as much as I do.

Can you speak about why your music video was chosen to be filmed at the “Dance Walk” in Williamsburg, Brooklyn?

I asked my friend Seth Hagenstein, a brilliant director, if he’d be up for making this video. We got to brainstorming and thought it would be amazing to capture the energy of New York at this particular moment in time–the city revived and the excitement on the streets palpable. He wanted to mirror the complicated feelings in the song with the layered experience of going back into the world fully. He had his friend Gilaad Amir organize a “Dance Walk” for 100 friends. It was seriously one of the coolest things I’ve ever been a part of. People were joining from off the street. It didn’t feel like a video shoot – Seth just captured the joy everyone was experiencing in the moment. So ultimately the video feels really organic and spontaneous, which I love. He created a really beautiful piece of art that elevates the song.

What message do you want “Cry Baby Cry” to convey to fans?

I want fans to hear this song and be empowered to own their experiences. I wrote it at the height of Covid/quarantine, when it felt like the world was ending. It’s about having very intense feelings for someone and giving over to those feelings for a moment. I wrote it stream-of-consciousness style, so it takes you on a journey. Ultimately I think the listener will feel some cognitive dissonance between the lyrics and the upbeat vibe. This is intentional. Not every relationship is straightforward and simple, but even the “wrong relationship” can have a place in our life story.

What was your transition from theater to songwriting like?

I’ve been writing songs since I was a kid, but planned to spend my life singing in theater and immersing myself in fascinating characters. All through acting classes, a teacher would say something and it would inspire a lyric. I’d come home at night to my piano and write songs – that was my happy place. A big lesson you get in acting class is – don’t create a picture in your head of what the scene will look like. Let it happen and be completely in the moment, let the moment change you. There were actors in my classes who were living and breathing theater. That made me realize music has always been like breathing for me. So ultimately I took that lesson, and it brought me back to my first love.

Who would be your dream music collaborator to work with?

Ohh this is a tough one. So many incredible artists I’d love to work with. Mark Ronson would be a total dream. I met him on the street once and was completely starstruck. He created some timeless magic with Amy Winehouse, one of the greatest to ever do it. And he’s built a diverse body of work. He doesn’t impose too much of his own style – he lets true artistry shine through. And he’s a die hard New Yorker, which we share.

How has the pandemic affected/changed your songwriting processes?

The pandemic has majorly changed my process. It’s given me the time and space to really hear my thoughts. I’ve been writing completely for myself. The uninterrupted, guilt-free sessions were just unheard of before the pandemic. And this time has made me realize that there is never a dull moment in life – there is always something going on internally to write about. You know those movies where nothing significant is really happening but everything is happening, like “Lost in Translation?” Some of what I’ve been writing feels like that. It’s the little in between moments that are interesting to me.

There’s also a more selfless nature to writing these days. I think more about how people will relate, how to change their day. I wrote my first single, “They Say New York Is Dead,” when I had Covid. It poured out over two days and I recorded it in my apartment. I shared it because I knew a lot of people were feeling what I was feeling. There’s been so much boiling under the surface for everyone. So to get to unearth all of it and write about it has been fun.

Can you share any other exciting releases you have coming up in 2021?

I plan to release an EP of 6 songs in October, which I’m super excited about. I’ve written a lot over the last couple years, so I’m still figuring out what will be on there. It’ll be stylistically diverse for sure. Can’t wait for you guys to hear.

ISSY WOOD RELEASES NEW EP, IF IT’S ANY CONSTELLATION, VIA MARK RONSON’S ZELIG RECORDS

RELEASES NEW MV FOR TRACK “FUSS”

STREAM IF IT’S ANY CONSTELLATION NOW, VIEW “FUSS” MUSIC VIDEO

Today, U.K. painter and 2021 Artist to Watch Issy Wood releases her self-written/produced EP, If It’s Any Constellation via Mark Ronson’s Zelig Records. This latest release by the artist crowned ascendant popstar by ArtNet is now available on all streaming platforms. She also released the music video for her song “Fuss” which is featured on the EP. Listen to If It’s Any Constellation here and check out the new music video here.

The music video for “Fuss” features sculptures by balloon artist David Crofts. The full video was shot at Issy’s art gallery in London in a single morning.

“Fuss’s video, despite its childlike medium, depicts a very sad dinner date. It fits perfectly on an EP that is equally playful in form and morose in lyrics,” said Issy.

If It’s Any Constellation was written and recorded in the artist’s kitchen using a Juno-106 synth given to her by Ronson last summer. This project explores Issy’s reality during an isolated 2020 in which inner demons were impossible to ignore. While the EP’s first single “Muscle” (released in April and co-produced by Mark Rosnon) both longs for and mocks ideas of toughness through the lyrics and anthemic classic rock feeling production, the second single, “Fuss” (released in May) leans towards the ballad format.

“Fuss is a passive-aggressive song. Its relative simplicity is a sign of its confidence, as are the lyrics, which are given permission to hold the whole track in place. This is about somebody looking to destroy a person in the most British way possible: politely,” shared Issy.

The other tracks on the EP include:

  • “Tough luv” admits to enjoying being deterred by another person
  • “I’ll hold” looks at self-betterment in a traumatic moment, trying to differentiate being abandoned from being placed on hold.
  • “Child’s pose” juxtaposes calmness with the question of maturity using yoga as a stand-in. Unearthing this dilemma, the track starts: oh once the trauma’s baked in / You’ll never sweat it out / It’s set up shop in your bones.

If It’s Any Constellation is Issy’s newest project since her debut EP, Cries Real Tears!which came out in December of last year. That EP, which featured her two singles, “Debt” and “Cry / Fun,” was crafted over the course of several months during the pandemic. During that time Issy focused on teaching herself to create new worlds through sound while writing most of her haunting lyrics in between painting projects. The result was a unique body of work that deals in both sweetness and cruelty. If It’s Any Constellation, is the next chapter of her introspective journey.

Issy comes from a fine artist background and gained initial recognition for her paintings. Her pieces have been featured in art galleries across the world. Her recent EPs are the result of Issy’s continued exploration of artistry by using music and multimedia as an extension of her work.

NEW ALBUM BLUE WEEKEND DUE JUNE 11, 2021

Wolf Alice, Britain’s best band, today release their uncompromising new single “Smile” via. The track was inspired by lead singer Ellie Rowsell’s desire to fight back against those who try to define her, and is the second single from their highly-anticipated third album, Blue Weekend, the follow up to the Mercury Prize winning Visions of a Life.

Listen to “Smile”

Watch the video for “Smile”

“Smile” is carried along on a tide of visceral energy, a song destined to be a live favorite. The band envisaged this during their time recording Blue Weekend in Brussels during lockdown. Rowsell states, “this is one of the songs we wrote thinking that we would play it live. I miss that feeling of singing on stage. It’s like screaming into a pillow or something — you can get away with being more nasty. There’s a whole other part of me missing.”

“Smile” is accompanied by a video directed by Jordan Hemmingway (Gucci, Raf Simons, Comme Des Garçons), the band’s second collaboration with Hemmingway, following previous single “The Last Man On Earth” (watch). The saturated visuals of the band in full-flow, combined with the casting of riotous punk extras and pub locals, provide the ideal hedonistic backdrop to the track.

“The Last Man On Earth” spent 7 weeks on the BBC Radio 1 A-List. It was premiered by Annie Mac as her Hottest Record In The World, further cementing a longstanding relationship between the band and Annie. Last week, the band released a special live version of “The Last Man On Earth” which can be viewed below.

The release of “Smile” follows the news of the band announcing a 2022 UK & Ireland tour, their first headline shows since 2018. For the full list of dates see below, to purchase tickets please visit Wolf Alice’s website. Before then, on May 22, Wolf Alice will play the Glastonbury Presents Live at Worthy Farm Livestream alongside Coldplay, Michael Kiwanuka, Haim and more.

Wolf Alice are Ellie Rowsell (vocals, guitar), Joff Oddie (guitar, vocals), Theo Ellis (bass) and Joel Amey (drums, vocals). It has been a decade since the band began as a duo of Ellie Rowsell and Joff Oddie,  then later expanding to a four-piece, with Joel Amey and Theo Ellis joining the group. Since then, the band saw their 2015 debut album My Love Is Cool soar to #2 on the UK charts, their sophomore album Visions Of A Life win the 2018 Hyundai Mercury prizeand a GRAMMY nomination for Best Rock Performance. The band played a massive 187 shows on the Visions Of A Life world tour – including a sold out Alexandra Palace, 2 sold out dates at Brixton Academy, and a set on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury.

It was no surprise that creating a follow-up to Visions Of A Life was a daunting task. The record was a huge success, which subsequently led to many months spent on tour – with intercontinental flights, hotels and long-bus journeys taking a toll on the band.

The band decamped to an Airbnb in Somerset, and it was there that they reconfigured who they were together, far away from festival stages, tour buses, awards shows, and fans. They cemented their friendship and set to work on some fledgling demos in a converted church. These demos evolved into Blue Weekend, a record produced by Markus Dravs (Arcade Fire, Björk, Brian Eno, Florence + The Machine) who has aided the band in refining their sound to an even sharper point. Rowsell’s personal storytelling is at the core of Blue Weekend, an album that sees Wolf Alice embrace a newfound boldness and vulnerability in equal measure.

Blue Weekend will be released on June 11th 2021 via Dirty Hit/RCA Records, and will be available on all DSPs & vinyl.

SK8 – CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE

TAYLOR GANG SINGER HERALDS UPCOMING PROJECT WITH SECOND ALT-ROCK JAM ARRIVING TODAY ALONGSIDE DANIEL KELLY-DIRECTED VISUAL

Fast-rising Taylor Gang singer, SK8, is continuing his musical evolution into alternative rock with his new single, “Caught In The Middle” – LISTEN HERE.

Over an infectious guitar riff and trap-like drums, SK8 uses a nostalgia-tinged pop/punk chorus to describe feeling caught between wanting a relationship and wanting to pursue his dreams.

I’ve always known that I wanted to be a recording artist. I wanted the life that I’d seen my favorite musicians and bands live. I moved all the way from Omaha, Nebraska to achieve that dream and sometimes that dream pulls you in a direction that separates you from another thing you want in your life. ‘Caught In The Middle’ is about that constant push and pull and trying to find the balance in my personal life and music career.” –SK8

“Caught In The Middle” arrives today alongside a dramatic visual directed by SK8’s frequent collaborator, Daniel Kelly – WATCH HERE.

The new single and video from the Omaha, NE born, LA-based singer arrives after his first foray into alt-rock with “Famous” featuring fellow ascending recording artist Tyla Yaweh, which also received an accompanying Daniel Kelly-directed visual. American Songwriter praised “Famous,” noting that, “SK8 effortlessly blends hip-hop and punk into some newly evolved sound.” Additionally, Hot New Hip Hop hailed the song as a, “genre-melting experience.”

“Caught In The Middle” is the second single from SK8’s upcoming project, arriving soon…

ABOUT SK8:

At 15, you could find SK8 in his room writing lyrics, and by his sophomore year, you could find him handing out CDs in high school. The 23-year-old moved to Los Angeles from Omaha, Nebraska and linked with the venerable Taylor Gang, first breaking into the mainstream with his gold-certified single, “Like That,” with Jack & Jack and opening for revered rap icons like Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz and Rae Sremmurd. SK8 began building a dedicated fanbase of dreamers who related to his message of seizing every moment long before his eventual move to LA. Shortly after founding his own imprint, Alignment, and formally signing a joint venture with Atlantic Records via James McMillan’s ART@WAR, SK8 released his major label debut EP, sk8sounds, which was buttressed by the standout singles “Omme (Feat. Wiz Khalifa),” “XXX” and “Mood (Feat. YK Osiris).” Over a year later, SK8 turned a new page in his career with his first single of 2021, “Famous (Feat. Tyla Yaweh),” and its associated forthcoming project which finds the rising singer seamlessly blending punk/rock instrumentation with his hip-hop origins, the latest, but not last, development in SK8’s rapidly evolving artistry.

LAURA PIERI – GRENADES

LAURA PIERI’S NEW SINGLE “GRENADES” EXPLODES ONTO THE MUSIC SCENE

It has been almost a year since Laura Pieri released her last hit single, “All I Need,” which premiered just before the pandemic struck and the world locked down. Like so many artists, Pieri was eager to continue creating music, performing, and advancing her musical journey.  But often patience can pay off and throughout a year of introspection and personal growth, Pieri is set to debut what is already being coined as her best song yet, “Grenades”!

When Laura walked into the recording session that day, she and her producer, Josh, had planned to put the final touches on a track that they were ready to green light as her next release. She was distracted and angry over a toxic relationship she was in, unable to focus and completely distraught over a situation that blew up. It was almost impossible to block it out, so she took a detour and started working out a new song entirely. The energy flowed from frustration to creativity. Enter “Grenades.” Everyone knew this had to be the next release and they immediately put this in front of everything else.

For Laura, “Grenades” would represent a cathartic relief for something so intense that someone could be dealing with, that makes you so infuriated and outraged–but it’s completely out of your control and there’s nothing you can do.  All you can do is acknowledge it, accept it and let it go!

Pieri explains “I was so mad it that day, it was like I got so caught up in somebody else and I forgot it’s not about them, it’s about me. If I could unmeet somebody, I would, but that’s not reality and now sitting here in all of this uncomfortableness was a new thing for me.”

Creating the song was the healthiest way she could express what she was dealing with at the time. Laura goes on to explain “It’s like you know you’re gonna be angry AF and go through that and feel it… but then let it go, let that rage literally blow up! Grenades became a metaphor for blowing something up in a figurative way and shattering all that negative energy and moving on from there.”

While Laura has been writing music for some time now, “Grenades” was a writing experience where she felt the power of her voice behind the collaboration. While not a self-proclaimed natural songwriter, Pieri loves poetry and languages. With the emotional content around “Grenades,” she was able to pour out how she was feeling, and those feelings slowly turned into melodies that turned into words. “It just felt very easy to be there and I feel like I’m slowly exploring my songwriting skills, and ‘Grenades’ really feels like just the tip of the iceberg for me.”

Supplementing the single is a music video that exemplifies all the emotions from “Grenades” into a finely tuned visual journey. While Laura and her team had to get creative to circumvent the challenges of a video shoot in 2020, the end product came out perfectly and almost better then could have been expected. They worked with a skeletal crew, prioritized open spaces, and shot mainly between Malibu and downtown LA. They shot the rooftop shots downtown and narrowly pulled off their one chance at getting a fireworks explosion exactly right. The beach scenes were shot at sundown, into which created this dreary effect, capturing a cool tone that fell between sundown and nightfall. Laura adds “It was moody – it ended up being the perfect backdrop for the song.”

This music video was a perfect collaboration of creative minds coming together through all of the difficulties and obstacles they had to experience while shooting a video during a pandemic. Laura explains “I honestly really enjoyed having such a small crew because everyone has to contribute, and we were all packing up and unloading cars. We all had this break in Malibu, eating tacos and listening to music on the beach while we were waiting for the sun to go down. It was just such a cool moment in time to share with each other.”

Pieri, now 23, feels like she is in just the right place musically. She is moving forward trying new things but is taking her time in getting there.  Of what the future holds for Laura Pieri, she concludes “I am savoring the journey and whatever road I take next, or whatever music is on that path. I can only hope that people resonate with it as well. “

“Grenades” is produced by Joshua “YXSH” Thomas, and the music video was shot and produced by Living Records & Ace Monkey Productions and executively produced by Cory Rooney Music Group.
