Pearl Jam: Support for Healthcare

Pearl Jam Calls for September 12th Day of Solidarity to Support Healthcare for Heroes

Band Hosted 9/11 First Responders at Madison Square Garden on the 21st Anniversary of Terrorist Attack
. “9/11 was horrific, traumatic, despicable … but in some ways, 9/12 was awesome. 9/12 people came together as one. We were supported by the rest of the planet. And most importantly in our country, we supported each other. There was a time when we supported each other. That’s the part that we cannot forget. We can stay together. We don’t have to wait for another terrorist attack and suffer this thing of being divided.” – Eddie Vedder, sharing a conversation with First Responder Lt. Michael O’Connell, FDNY.

Last night at Madison Square Garden, Pearl Jam honored the first responders of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the 21st anniversary of the tragedy. Frontman Eddie Vedder talked about meeting with a group of first responders before the show and being reminded of the importance of September 12th as a day when everyone came together in solidarity.  He called out the incredible work of John Feal, a retired construction worker who lost part of his foot while working at Ground Zero in the aftermath of the attacks and founded the FealGood Foundation to benefit responders who have suffered from numerous health issues ever since.

That same solidarity is needed now to ensure that the heroes of September 11th continue to receive the treatment they need for the significant injuries and illnesses sustained on and stemming from that horrific day, many caused by the toxic dust generated by the collapse of the World Trade Center towers.

After 17 years of hard work from survivors and advocates, Congress finally responded to this crisis by creating the World Trade Center Health Program. Today, it encompasses more than 117,000 responders and survivors, most of whom are being treated for more than one illness. World Trade Center Health Program provides critical care but is facing an impending $3 billion budget shortfall.

Unless Congress acts by the end of the year, the program will be forced to stop accepting new members who are sick and to make additional cuts in services. The Bipartisan 9/11 Responder and Survivor Health Funding and Correction Act would ensure the program gets the funding to meet the medical needs of 9/11 responders and survivors.

For more information and to contact your elected officials, visit Renew911health.org. You can also join Vitalogy Foundation in supporting The FealGood Foundation to benefit 9/11 first responders.

“So let those events we got through together all those years ago and that these men and women are still courageously healing from – let those lessons be remembered as our solidarity to come together and keep this country straight … this country that we love.”  – Eddie Vedder

DURAN DURAN – ALL OF YOU

With their highly anticipated North American tour starting next month, on July 14, Duran Duran have announced the limited 12” vinyl release of ‘ALL OF YOU’ (EROL ALKAN EXTENDED REWORK), out October 14th and available to pre-order HERE via Phantasy Sound.

Having co-produced Duran Duran’s acclaimed fifteenth studio album, ‘FUTURE PAST’, Erol Alkan returns to deliver a very special Extended Rework. Paying tribute to the band’s pioneering ‘Night Version’ remixes that tipped their earliest material towards the dance floor, this grandiose reimagining equally recalls Alkan’s beloved reworks from over the years.

Recorded with founding members Simon Le BonNick RhodesJohn Taylor, and Roger Taylor, ‘ALL OF YOU’ also features lead guitar from Graham Coxon and backing vocals by Barli. Blessed with the raw material, Alkan distills each element into a glorious disco odyssey totaling nearly ten minutes, an epic but sensual dance floor trip that already ranks amongst his finest work.

Phantasy is proud to release ALL OF YOU’ (EROL ALKAN EXTENDED REWORK) (backed with an instrumental version) on a limited run of 12” vinyl, with an exclusive red vinyl edition of only 300, available only at Rough Trade stores.

Pre-order ‘ALL OF YOU (EROL ALKAN EXTENDED REWORK)’ on 12” vinyl HERE.

Originally debuted by Erol Alkan in Ibiza at the band’s three night ‘Duran Duran: Touch The Sunrise’ immersive weekend experience that lifted the curtain on the island’s summer season, the extended rework is a hypnotic, expansive ode to the FUTURE PAST album highlight. Duran Duran‘s instantly recognizable sound is complemented with new accents and flourishes – John Taylor‘s head-nodding bass line entwines with Graham Coxon‘s guitar lead, both shot through with instant hooks and punctuated by Nick Rhodes’ cinematic keys.

The extended rework arrives as Duran Duran look ahead to their long-awaited North American headlining tour this summer, celebrating the band’s spectacular four-decade career and in continued support of their critically acclaimed 15th studio album, FUTURE PAST.

Starting August 19, the 14-date tour will see the multi-platinum, award-winning legends play iconic venues such as Madison Square Garden in New York City, the Wynn Las Vegas, and The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, amongst others. Tickets for the band’s North American tour are on sale now. Please visit http://duranduran.com/tour/ for details and to purchase tickets.

Joining as special guests for all shows except Las Vegas (which is billed as ‘an evening with’) and Los Angeles will be Nile Rodgers & CHIC.

In other exciting news, the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame announced that Duran Duran will be inducted this fall, joining a long list of ground-breaking global icons before them. The 37th Annual Ceremony is set to take place November 5th at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, California.

With a career that has seen more than 100 million record sales worldwide, 21 UK Top 20 tunes and 18 American hit singles, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction truly cements the multi-GRAMMY, BRIT Award and Ivor Novello winners as one of the most successful and influential bands of all time.

Duran Duran’s current album, ‘FUTURE PAST’ is available digitally as well as in a variety of physical formats: standard CD, cassette, a limited edition deluxe hardback book CD featuring three additional tracks, and colored vinyl here.  It is also available in immersive Sony 360 Reality Audio on Amazon Music HD, TIDAL HiFi, and Deezer HiFi.

Enlisting the help of some of the most exciting names of the last 50 years, with ‘FUTURE PAST,’ Duran Duran have delivered another incredible genre-spanning piece of work that once again sets them apart from the pack. Working alongside DJ / producer Erol Alkan and pioneering Italian composer / producer Giorgio Moroder, who added his magic to create two instant future classics (‘BEAUTIFUL LIES,’ ‘TONIGHT UNITED’), as well as some of the most unexpected and inspiring names in pop – including Swedish hitmaker, Tove Lo on ‘GIVE IT ALL UP,’ ‘Queen of Drill’ Ivorian Doll on ‘HAMMERHEAD’ and Japan’s CHAI on ‘MORE JOY!’.  In addition, Blur’s Graham Coxon co-wrote and lends his guitar to several tracks on the record and David Bowie’s former pianist Mike Garson adds an exquisite sonic layer to album closer ‘FALLING’. The record, which was recorded across studios in London and LA over lockdown, also features long-time collaborator Mark Ronson who co-wrote and played on ‘WING,’ and was mixed by Mark ‘Spike’ Stent.

Florence + The Machine – Free

Florence + the Machine unveiled a new single, “Free” with a video starring acclaimed actor Bill Nighy as Florence’s anxiety and directed by Autumn de Wilde—listen and watch HERE. The track is the latest from Florence’s forthcoming fifth LP Dance Fever, out May 13.

Florence has shared three songs from Dance Fever thus far—”My Love” (plus remixes from co-producer Dave Bayley of Glass Animals and Meduza), “King” and “Heaven is Here“—all of which arrived alongside videos by the acclaimed director de Wilde featuring choreography by Ryan Heffington.

The Tour

Tickets for Florence’s North American headline dates this year are on sale now. The tour kicks off September 2 in Montreal with further stops at New York’s Madison Square Garden, Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl and many more. Arlo Parks, Sam Fender, King Princess, Yves Tumor, Japanese Breakfast and Wet Leg will join as support on select dates. One dollar from every ticket sold will benefit Choose Love to aid refugees worldwide. See the full schedule HERE.

Additionally, Florence will play two very special, intimate shows this spring: April 29 in Los Angeles at the Los Angeles Theatre and May 6 at Lincoln Center‘s Alice Tully Hall in New York—both shows sold out in seconds.

The Album

Dance Fever was recorded in London over the course of the pandemic in anticipation of the world’s reopening. It conjures up what Florence missed most in the midst of lockdown—clubs, dancing at festivals, being in the whirl of movement and togetherness—and the hope of reunions to come.

The image and concept of choreomania—a Renaissance phenomenon in which groups of people danced wildly to the point of exhaustion, collapse and death—became a focal point of inspiration. Forced off the road for the first time in more than a decade, dance offered Florence propulsion, energy and a way of looking at music more choreographically.

Starting, as ever, armed with a notebook of poems and ideas, Florence had just arrived to New York in March 2020 to begin recording when Covid-19 forced a retreat to London. Holed up at home, the songs she had begun started to transform, ultimately arriving somewhere that Florence describes as “Nick Cave at the club.”

Dance Fever is an album that sees Florence at the peak of her powers, coming into a fully realized self-knowledge, poking sly fun at her own self-created persona, playing with ideas of identity, masculinity and femininity, redemption and celebration.Dance Fever was produced by Florence, Jack Antonoff and Dave Bayley of Glass Animals.

Stromae – Multitude Tour

Stromae continues to command audiences worldwide, as his North American arena tour sees new dates added and others sell out, including added shows at New York’s legendary Madison Square Garden and Montreal’s Bell Centre. A new show at the Shrine Auditorium has also been announced in Los Angeles.

Artist pre-sale begins Wednesday, April 6 at 10 AM (local) The pre-sale password is MULTITUDE. The general on-sale begins Friday, April 8 at 10 AM local time.

All previously announced tour dates are on-sale now HERE

Last month, the internationally acclaimed Belgian-born artist, writer, performer, producer, designer and director released his critically acclaimed third-studio album: Multitude. The album has been hailed by The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, NPR and countless other respected publications. The twelve-track masterpiece was composed by Stromae, produced by his creative label Mosaert, and features recent singles “Santé,” “L’enfer” and his most recent offering, “Fils De Joie.”

Multitude is available on digital, CD and vinyl, including special colored version for D2C. Listen HERE.

Ahead of his high anticipated Coachella appearances on Saturday April 16 and 23, Stromae will be performing live on ABC‘s Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday, April 11.

Multitude comes after a period of forced hiatus from the stage. With it came furlough and its silver linings: settling down, leading a more relaxed, structured life closer to family, making work exciting again, expanding his sources of inspiration, and, most of all, making what he went through worth it by reinvesting the dividends of this challenging phase into the core of new songs.

Far from any self-centered self-pity, Stromae took advantage of this time to identify more closely with others, putting himself in the others’ shoes. The unstable men in “La Solassitude and “Mon Amour,” the prostitute’s son in “Fils de Joie,” the depressed and suicidal protagonists of “Mauvaise Journée” and “L’Enfer,” the mismatched couple in “Pas Vraiment,” the invisible people in “Santé,” the suffering women in “Déclaration.” He embraces them all with kindness and altruism, providing each with a touching portrait.

By doing so, he gives the title Multitude a deep resonance, the same one that Walt Whitman conveys in his poem, of which Stromae bases the album off of: “I am large, I contain multitude, I am of every hue and caste, of every rank and religion.””Multitude is a window on the world, on people, and a rare moment of communion and pleasure to be shared. An alchemy of opposites, shaped by the will to testify without judgment or contempt to the human condition in all its diversity, and to the urge to explore the lives of others, sometimes your own (Que du bonheur on fatherhood, Invaincu on healing). Multitude is Stromae’s other way of exploring the world, while staying firmly attached to his roots.

Bombazo Caribbean Skirts Featured at New York Fashion Week

By: Javier Pedroza

Milteri Tucker Concepción is a busy and multi-talented Afro Boricua who holds degrees in Biology, Chemistry and a master’s in Dance Education. She is an author, a mother and was casted in Lin Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights the movie. As we approach #NYFW2021, Milteri puts on another hat, as designer.

Milteri is the founder of BOMBAZO and the artistic director of Bombazo Dance Co. The Puerto Rican-Bronx based non-profit dance organization’s focus is to educate, advocate, preserve and perform Bomba Puertorriqueña. As an author, educator and master Bomba dancer, she lectures across the United States and the world. I sat with Milteri and we spoke about Bomba, fashion and Puerto Rico.

Milteri, tell our readers, who is Milteri Tucker Concepción?

Well, I was born and raised in Puerto Rico and grew up with a passion for dance since I was 5 years old. I  recall dancing in “la Sala”(the living room) with three of the most influential women in my life: my grandmother, mother and aunt. As part of my upbringing I remember dancing, planting and assisting my elders in the kitchen. I also vividly recall shopping for fabrics with my aunt and watching my grandmother Abuela Teresa, warmly referred to as “Mama” sewing. My aunt “Titi” Maria Concepción was a designer who attended FIT and designed clothes for top actors in Puerto Rico. I was blessed to have been raised in a household full of  love, and love for my culture!

As a teenager, I studied dance in La Escuela de Bellas Artes in Ponce, PR. At 17, [I] moved to NYC to pursue careers in dance and science. In 2006, I graduated with a dual major of Dance and Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Hunter College. I currently hold a masters degree in Dance Education from NYU Steinhardt. Today I am a renowned Bomba master dancer, choreographer, scholar, dance educator and author. [I wrote] the first bilingual Bomba children’s book, titled “Bomba Puertorriqueña” and illustrated by Boricua artist, Mia Roman.

I’ve had the privilege to perform in multiple venues across NYC and the world – from the prestigious Lincoln Center, Madison Square Garden, City Center, Summerstage, Pregones Theater, BAAD, The Latin Billboards Awards, dancing for Don Omar with choreography by Maria Torres O’Connor, to amazing community centers.

I am a cultural warrior (guerrera cultural) who safeguards our traditions of Bomba Puertorriquenas, via [my] 501c3 non-profit dance organization: Bombazo Dance Co, Inc and international brand of Caribbean dance skirts: Bombazo Wear-Bomba & Caribbean Dance Skirts®. I was recently  featured in Lin Manuel Miranda’s movie, In The Heights, as the Bomba representation.

How was your experience filming ‘In the Heights’?

Being invited to dance Bomba for In the Heights was a surreal experience and a dream come true! It was an honor to represent our African heritage through our traditional dances. However, one of my favorite memories came after the movie premiered…. I had the opportunity to open the 2021 Virtual National Puerto Rican Day Parade in NYC, where Lin and I danced Bomba together.

What is the history of Bomba?

Bomba is Puerto Rico’s oldest musical genre, dating back to the 17th century and created by the African enslaved and free people of color from the Caribbean. This was one of the ways they communicated in our coastal sugarcane and coffee plantations.  It is a secular practice, where the community gathers to sing, dance and drum.

Why did you create Bombazo Dance Company?

I founded Bombazo Dance Company to show the world that Puerto Rico has rich African ancestry, and that our traditions are very much alive. As a Bomba dance company, we communicate through dance and drumming. [This is] reflected in our traditional folk art dancers. It is also important to create a safe space to fuse Bomba with other forms of dance – such as ballet, contemporary, social dances and dances of the African and Caribbean diaspora.

What inspired you to create Bombazo dance wear?

At the same time I started Bombazo Dance Company, I was teaching Bomba classes to the community and needed skirts. Believe it or not, it was hard to find a seamstress who could make Caribbean skirts or a location to purchase them. I wanted to create skirts that fit all Caribbean dance styles, because I am that dancer. And voilà – Bombazo Wear Bomba Caribbean Skirts was born! My mother, Dr. Margarita Concepción, and I are the CEOs and we sew the [skirts] too. Our skirts are handmade, custom[ized] and tailored to each client. A part of the funds go to aid families affected by the earthquakes in Southern Puerto Rico.

How does it feel to be invited to NYFW 2021 / Harlem Fashion Week?

It is an honor to have been invited to showcase for a second time in HFM! The organizers are truly showcasing diversity within their shows and providing  opportunities for designers of color to present their designs to the world. It’s important to me – as a woman of color, a Latina and AfroBoricua – [that] they understand my vision of dance as fashion. And my skirts have fashion written all over them!

Tell us about your upcoming collection “Resistencia y Libertá!” (Resistance and Freedom)

I am the creator of the Puerto Rican Bomba Flag Skirt®. A flag; its colors, represents a collective orgullo – pride for its people. Our flag was conceived and designed here in NYC. It was prohibited to fly The Puerto Rican flag in both Puerto Rico and New York at one time. Its pride is back after Hurricane Maria, [now] you see our colors in every town’s building and rinconcito (corner) in both Puerto Rico and the diaspora! Therefore, my new collection for 2021 is titled: “Resistencia y Libertá!” Where each skirt in the collection represents a social cause affecting Puerto Rico – such as the cultural resistencia by the people, No al Feminicidio, Boricua hasta en la Luna, Afroboricuaness, LGBTQ+ representation and support in the Bomba Community, ect. It is important to note that this is a brand and line designed and sewn by a Bomba dancer, a person from the community. These are skirts [are designed] with a mission. Part of the funds go to help families affected by the earthquakes in the South of Puerto Rico and organizations/community ensembles continuing the labor of safeguarding Bomba traditions in the island.

Any advice for the youth who want to connect and immerse themselves with their African roots and Culture?

Learn about all parts of you! That makes you unique and special. Speak to your elders: abuelas, abuelos, tias, tios and elders from your community. They have a lot of wisdom and years of experience you can learn from. Always connect to your culture, to your African roots! There is an African proverb I love : “Sankofa– in order to move forward you must know your past!” Know who you are, where you come from, so that you can pass the knowledge to your next generation! Ubuntu! (an African Proverb [that] means “I am because we ALL are!”)

ABOUT TREY ANASTASIO

Over the past three decades, composer/guitarist/vocalist Trey Anastasio has forged a multi-faceted career, winning acclaim in rock, classical and theatrical circles. He is a founding member of Phish, one of today’s most successful and innovative rock bands. In the summer of 2017, Phish completed a residency at the world-renowned Madison Square Garden in New York – an unprecedented 13-night run known as The Baker’s Dozen. Phish’s total number of performances at the famed arena currently sits at 64.

Anastasio has received GRAMMY® nominations for his recordings with Phish and for his solo work. He has collaborated with such artists as Dave Matthews, Herbie Hancock, Carlos Santana, Toots and the Maytals, B.B. King and The Roots, and – as part of the trio Oysterhead – Les Claypool (Primus) and Stewart Copeland (The Police). He co-wrote the music for the Broadway musical Hands on a Hardbody, which received a Tony nomination for Best Original Score in 2013. In the summer of 2015, Anastasio joined the surviving four members of the Grateful Dead for five stadium shows, which celebrated the band’s 50th anniversary and served as their farewell shows.

Anastasio has performed his original compositions with numerous symphonies. The New York Times hailed his Carnegie Hall performance with the New York Philharmonic as “that rarest of rarities, a classical-rock hybrid that might please partisans from both constituencies.” In 2014, he debuted a new piece for guitar and orchestra, entitled Petrichor, on a West Coast orchestral tour that concluded with a performance at the Hollywood Bowl, marking his second performance with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In April 2019, Anastasio released his 14th solo album, Ghosts of the Forest, which Rolling Stone said was “built around psychedelic guitar liftoffs, ambitious arrangements, and extremely personal lyrics.” Between Me and My Mind, a film documenting Trey’s creative process debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival and played a sold-out limited-run engagement in theaters this past summer.

MALUMA — “SOBRIO”

THE MUSIC VIDEO FEATURES CAMEOS FROM SCOTT DISICK, SAWEETIE, QUINCY BROWN AND SHANINA SHAIK

Global Latin music idol Maluma has just dropped his new single, melodic Latin pop banger “Sobrio” (“Sober”), along with its music video, which includes several celebrity cameos. “Sobrio” is the first single off of the artist’s upcoming album. You can listen to the song HERE. You can watch the accompanying music video HERE.

In “Sobrio”, written by Maluma, Édgar Barrera, Kevyn Mauricio Cruz, Alejandro Robledo, Filly Andres Lima and Lenin Yorney Palacios, Maluma once again sings about heartbreak but unlike the somewhat braggadocious Papi Juancho attitude he had in “HAWÁI”; this time he shows a more vulnerable side. The lyrics tell the story of someone who is only able to gather the courage to call his ex-girlfriend to tell her he misses her and say he is sorry, only after he has been drinking.

In the beautiful cinematic music video shot in Los Angeles by renowned director Jessy Terrero of Cinema Giants, we encounter a Maluma that is definitely not “sobrio” as he drowns his sorrows when he sees his girl, played by Israeli fashion supermodel Eden Fines, on a date, with reality star Scott Disick, and then gathers the liquid courage to confront them, making a fool of himself in the process while still somehow looking cool as only Maluma could do. Besides cameos from Disick, singer/rapper Saweetie, actor/singer/model Quincy Brown and Australian supermodel Shanina Shaik, the video has an unexpected, not-to-be-missed ending.

Maluma is currently in the midst of rehearsals for Maluma’s PAPI JUANCHO MALUMA WORLD TOUR, his first live, in-person tour since the beginning of the pandemic. The North American leg of the PAPI JUANCHO MALUMA WORLD TOUR kicks off on September 2nd and will make stops in more than 25 cities before including venues such as Madison Square Garden in New York and The Forum in Los Angeles.
