Global 2022 Hot Wheels™ Legends Tour Winner Crowned at Jay Leno’s Garage

  • Announced on November 12, the 1992 Autozam Scrum from Beaumont, Texas, will be inducted into the Hot Wheels Garage of Legends™

The winner of the 2022 Hot Wheels™ Legends Tour was crowned during the virtual Global Grand Finale event held at Jay Leno’s Garage on November 12. Nicknamed “Texas Toot,” the ultra-custom 1992 Autozam Scrum mini truck, built by Craig Meaux of Beaumont, Texas, will be immortalized as a 1:64 Hot Wheels die-cast vehicle and inducted into the Hot Wheels Garage of Legends™.

Customized in Meaux’s garage and built entirely for fun, “Texas Toot” started life as a stock Japanese import in 2020, before becoming this year’s Hot Wheels Legends Tour champion. This custom Kei truck features a fabricated five-foot hydraulic lift, Chevrolet 454 big-block, TH400 transmission, 12-inch drop reverse rotation FTI transfer case, 250 shot nitrous kit, train horns and massive custom welded 30″x15″ wheels. Following this bucket list win, and in true challenger spirit, Meaux intends to use his passion project in burnout competitions, which he is sure to dominate in what Jay Leno calls his “superhero” truck. 

“The competition was strong in 2022, but turning a Japanese mini truck into a monster truck was hard to beat,” said Ted Wu, Vice President, Global Head of Design for Vehicles, Mattel. “As the first truck to be crowned since the inception of the Hot Wheels Legends Tour, we hope Craig’s passion project inspires builders and fans from around the world to set big goals and follow their dreams. I cannot wait to see what this super-sized mini truck looks like in 1:64-scale.”

“I wasn’t expecting to win, so this is a dream come true,” said Meaux. “I wanted to create something that no one else had. I didn’t have previous experience with this sort of fabrication, so it’s awesome that it came out the way it did and to have everybody enjoy the truck.” 

Co-hosted by celebrity car enthusiast Jay Leno and motorsports ambassador Jarod DeAnda, the fifth annual Hot Wheels Legends Tour Global Grand Finale featured 10 incredible builds around the world and an array of judges who were tasked with choosing the entry that best represents authenticity, creativity and garage spirit. Joining Jay and Jarod on stage were Ted Wu, Global Head of Design for Vehicles, Mattel; Bryan Benedict, Design Director of Hot Wheels and Matchbox Die-Cast Vehicles, Mattel; Brendon Vetuskey, Lead Designer for Monster Trucks Die-Cast and Redline Club Vehicles, Mattel; Dalal Elsheikh, Advance Autonomous Design Director at Ford and Hot Wheels Brand Ambassador; Magnus Walker, television presenter, fashion designer and prolific car collector; Misha Mansoor, founding member of progressive metal band Periphery and Hot Wheels Brand Ambassador; and Jon Chase, former Art Director at Hoonigan and Founder of the DSTROYR lifestyle brand.

As part of this exciting finale event, Hot Wheels announced the brand’s first-ever adult-facing campaign, “Where Legends are Made.” Designed to further engage the global car enthusiast community, this campaign serves as an umbrella for the adult-facing activities Hot Wheels will launch in the future, expanding beyond traditional automotive into pop culture. This includes segments such as fashion, film, gaming, NFTs and luxury, while remaining true to the brand’s car culture heritage with builder activities such as the Hot Wheels Legends Tour – the world’s largest traveling custom car show.

To kick off this adult campaign, Hot Wheels shared a video featuring culturally relevant influencers from around the world who champion different categories of car fandom – exotics, muscle/hot rods, modified/drift, EV/future, motorsports, trucks/off-road and retro/classic.

The 2022 Hot Wheels Legends Tour is coming to an exciting close with the Global Semi-Final set to air on Thursday, November 10, followed by the Global Grand Finale presented from Jay Leno’s Garage on Saturday, November 12. Both virtual events will feature epic builds that are competing for a chance to become the next Hot Wheels Garage of Legendsä inductee and immortalized as an official Hot Wheels 1:64 die-cast vehicle sold around the world.

The Hot Wheels Legends Tour is returning to the car capital of the world in search of a custom build to immortalize as the next Hot Wheels die-cast on Saturday, October 8. This free, family-friendly event is open to cars of every make, model, and style from the San Fernando Valley to the Venice Boardwalk and beyond. Attendees can expect to see classic muscle cars, JDM imports, lowriders, and modified exotics, among other one-of-a-kind custom builds. Hot Wheels Garage of Legends life-size vehicles will also be on display, and limited-edition collectables, exclusive to the Hot Wheels Legends Tour, will be available for purchase.

Each of the judges comes from a unique automotive background and their personal styles will play a major role in placing their votes. Judges for this stop include: renowned automotive artist Harold Cleworth; founder of the popular Vehicle Virgins YouTube channel Parker Nirenstein; radio DJ and podcaster Christian James Hand; The Car Girl influencer Kayla Delehant; founder of GI Automotive Amber Blonigan, along with members of the Hot Wheels design team.

Now in its fifth year, the Hot Wheels Legends Tour spans five continents and 16 countries, making it the largest traveling car show in the world. The winner of today’s Hot Wheels Legends Tour Los Angeles stop was just announced!

About the 1956 “Berlin Buick” VW Beetle:

Rob Freeman and his 1956 Volkswagen Beetle, known as the “Berlin Buick,” took home the win at the Los Angeles Hot Wheels Legends Tour stop after driving all the way from Syracuse, NY to compete. As a child, Freeman developed the idea for a mid-engine VW Beetle. Years later, he purchased a 1956 oval-window VW body for $1,000 and began to bring his childhood dream to life. The Beetle received the “Berlin Buick” moniker thanks to the 215ci Buick V8, producing 300hp, installed just behind the rear seats. The engine was selected due to its compact and lightweight design which allowed Freeman to keep the VW’s original proportions intact. To put the power to the ground, the Beetle was fitted with 15×12 inch rear wheels and massive drag slicks. The custom-built independent rear suspension even allows the wheels to fit under the original fenders. In keeping with the Buick theme, side trim from a 1957 Buick was applied to the body and classic 1953 Buick style portholes became strategically placed exhaust outlets. Additionally, the roof of the rag-top Bug was chopped four and a half inches for a sleek appearance and the custom interior features an adapted 1949 Buick dashboard and steering wheel.

HOT WHEELS – LEGENDS TOUR

The Hot Wheels™ Legends Tour is heading to the automotive capital of Canada on Saturday, July 16 to celebrate Windsor’s deep-rooted, eclectic car culture and showcase the area’s best custom builds. Located just across the river from Detroit, the Windsor event follows the July 9 Tour stop in the Motor City, where a 1931 Dodge Rat Rod swept the competition. This event is set to feature everything from American muscle and custom trucks, to imports and coveted marques not offered in the United States, and limited-edition collectibles available exclusively on the Hot Wheels Legends Tour. Submissions for the July 16 Tour stop are now open.

The winner of the Canadian event will advance to the Hot Wheels Legends Tour competition for a chance to compete in the Global Grand Finale later this year. Once chosen, the 2022 champion will have their one-of-a-kind car immortalized as the next 1:64-scale official Hot Wheels die-cast vehicle sold in more than 150 countries around the world.

The Hot Wheels Legends Tour is heading to the Peach State in search of some southern hospitality and epic custom fan cars on Saturday, June 18. From flashy exotics and lifted pickups to muscle cars and hot rods, the best of Atlanta’s eclectic car culture will be on display, along with Hot Wheels Garage of Legends life-size vehicles and limited-edition collectables available exclusively on the Hot Wheels Legends Tour.

The Hot Wheels™ Legends Tour returns to the Lone Star State on Saturday, May 14 for an epic day of custom car competition at the Houston-area Walmart Supercenter in Spring, Texas. Featuring fan-built art cars, slabs, Texas muscle, imports and everything in between, this family-friendly event is set to showcase the best of Houston’s custom car culture, Hot Wheels, Garage of Legends life-size vehicles, local automotive legends and H-Town celebrities, along with collectables available exclusively on the Tour.

“I always enjoy coming back home to Houston, which has long been a famous hub for custom car culture,” said Ted Wu, Vice President, Global Head of Design for Vehicles, Mattel. “The Houston art car, slab and muscle scenes always surprise us with some of the most outrageous and colorful contenders in the entire competition. We are sure to find the perfect match for
this year’s Global Grand Finale.”

The select panel of judges consists of Hot Wheels designers and local car afficionados, who will be on the hunt for the custom build that best showcases creativity, authenticity and garage spirit. Judges for this stop include: Houston rapper and philanthropist Trae tha Truth; Smithy Customs owner and head designer Justin Smith; Recoil Racing owner Jerry Dellaportas; president of West Houston Muscle and founder of Nerdtropolis Sean Tajipour; paint and bodywork specialist Veronica Ramos, along with Ted Wu and Phil Riehlman from the HotWheels design team.

Spanning 15 countries and 5 continents, the Hot Wheels Legends Tour is now in its fifth year, giving builders around the world a platform to showcase their passion projects. The winner of the May 14 stop in Houston will move on to compete in the Global Grand Finale later this year, where the champion will have their custom build immortalized as an official Hot Wheels 1:64 die-cast and inducted as a permanent fixture into the Hot Wheels Garage of Legends.

Hot Wheels Legends Tour

Mattel debuted the official Hot Wheels® 1:64-scale die-cast of the 2021 Hot Wheels Legends™ Tour winning 1969 Volvo P1800 Gasser built by Lee Johnstone of the United Kingdom. The first international Tour winner, Johnstone and his daughter, Victoria Upham, attended the global unveiling ceremony in New York City, where their family’s passion project was officially inducted into the Hot Wheels Garage of Legends™, a collection of the brand’s most iconic and celebrated designs existing both in 1:64th and life-sized scale. 

A 71-year-old motor mechanic, Johnstone restored and modified his 1969 Volvo to become a real-life track star, which he races with his wife and three daughters. A winner on and off the track, the P1800 Gasser emerged victorious from a historic 25-stop international Tour spanning 5 continents, joining previous champions including the inaugural 2018-winning 2JetZ™, 2019-winning THE NASH, and 2020-winning 1970 Pontiac® Firebird™, as the next permanent fixture in Hot Wheels history.

The announcement was made by Ted Wu, Vice President and Global Head of Design for Vehicles at Mattel, at the legendary Classic Car Club Manhattan one week prior to the start of the historic fifth annual Hot Wheels Legends Tour presented by Mobil 1. The epic space was reimagined to showcase dozens of examples of how Hot Wheels has influenced culture, ranging from high fashion to NFTs. The 2022 Tour kicks off with virtual live streams in New Zealand and Australia on April 14 and April 21, respectively, followed by the first North American live event in Miami, Florida on April 30.

“The Legends Tour began in 2018 as a way to celebrate and engage the car builder community around the world,” said Wu. “Lee Johnstone’s 1969 Volvo P1800 proved to be a truly awe-inspiring Gasser interpretation that captivated the entire Hot Wheels team. As the first international Legends Tour winner, we can’t wait to share his dream with Hot Wheels fans in more than 150 countries around the world.”

Once approved, the final design must also undergo a rigorous series of Hot Wheels track tests to ensure it performs as good as it looks.

Casio G-SHOCK has created their second exclusive extreme sports watch in collaboration with pro-surfer Kanoa Igarashi.

The partnership between G-SHOCK and Igarashi created the GBX-100KI, which is modeled after the GBX100. This new model is perfect for your loved ones that enjoy surfing, and showcases the use of Mobile Link functions, which allow the watch to be linked with a smartphone app. In the app consumers have the option to rack information vital to surfers such as tide data and sunset/sunrise times.

The watch itself has many unique designs that are distinct to Igarashi, like the number 50 on the band’s lug side, which is Igarashi’s number on the WSL Championship Tour. Hot Wheels in Houston

The Hot Wheels Legends Tour presented by Mobil 1 headed to “Space City” on September 18 and was set to feature the most awe-inspiring garage builds from across the Southwest. This live, in-person event took place at a Houston-area Walmart Supercenter in Spring, Texas, where one lucky fan car will moved on in the competition for a chance to become a Hot Wheels 1:64 die-cast toy.

With only two finalist spots remaining for the U.S. and Canada, local Houston celebrities, including Trae tha Truth and DJ Mr. Rogers, joined Hot Wheels Designers Ted Wu and Bryan Benedict at the judge’s table to evaluate each entry based on authenticity, creativity and garage spirit.

“Houston is the perfect place to host the next live event stop in the tour, as its car culture is synonymous with customization,” said Ted Wu, Vice President and Global Head of Design for Vehicles at Mattel. “From candy paint to elbow rims, we look forward to seeing the biggest and baddest builds from across the Southwest.”

Fans also saw a limited-run of three (AND ONLY THREE!), fully custom, hand-painted Hot Wheels ’64 Lincoln Continental convertible “SLAB” die-casts modeled after Trae tha Truth’s personal vehicle, which were available for live auction at the event. All proceeds benefitted the Angel By Nature non-profit organization, founded by Trae tha Truth, which provides local aid to the most vulnerable individuals in Houston’s vibrant community, with an emphasis on families with underserved youth.

Hundreds of custom fan cars registered for the event, and onsite experiences and appearances by Hot Wheels Garage of Legends icons Twin Mill, Bone Shaker, Deora II and Midas Monkey guaranteed fun for the whole family.

As with other event champions, the Houston winner will advance to the Semi-Finals later this year and then possibly the Global Grand Finale for a chance to have his or her car inducted into the Hot Wheels Garage of Legends and immortalized as the next 1:64 die-cast toy sold around the world. To date, North American winners include a 1968 Mercedes Benz 250S from Penticton, British Columbia, Canada; a custom aluminum racer named Lulu from Santa Fe, New Mexico; the 1969 Daytona Charger Superbird “Scraptona” from Macob, Michigan; “Loosie,” a Miami-winning 1929 Ford Model A; and the Detroit-winning 1975 Opel Manta, along with the exoskeleton 2003 Nissan 350Z from San Mateo, California.
