TOYS FOR TOTS ANNOUNCES 2020 CAMPAIGN RESULTS

Toys for Tots, the U.S. Marine Corps’ premiere community outreach program, delivered a record setting 20.2 million toys to 7.4 million less fortunate children in 2020.

2020 was a year unlike any other, causing economic devastation for so many. COVID-19 took hold early in the year, leaving many millions of families in dire need. While Toys for Tots is primarily known as a Christmastime charity, we did not want to wait until the holiday season to provide support. Marines are known for being the first to fight and for running toward the sound of battle. During the spring and summer of the COVID-19 crisis, Toys for Tots partnered with Good360 to provide immediate relief and assistance by distributing 2 million toys, games, and books to COVID-impacted families. These gifts provided many benefits during this extraordinary time of need. They helped to fight boredom, relieved anxiety in children, and facilitated a return to normalcy. The gifts even contributed to the educational development of our Nation’s children, especially while they’ve been out of school.

As the pandemic continued to spread–causing states and municipalities to impose significant restrictions–the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, in conjunction with Marine Forces Reserve, are looking ahead to the holiday season to making preparations for how best to collect and distribute toys to children in need.

COVID restrictions have greatly impacted our local campaign operations and significantly limited the number of volunteers permitted to help collect, sort, and distribute toys. In response, the Marines and local campaign coordinators of the Marine Toys for Tots Program rose to the occasion, and established over 800 local toy collection and distribution campaigns in all 50 states, as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands. As anticipated, the demand from families with children seeking support was much greater than the supply. But the Marines, in their typical fashion, found ways to improvise and adapt. They were very innovative about how they collected and distributed toys. They established curbside and drive-through collection and distribution methods, and enlisted support from other local social service agencies in order to accomplish the mission.

Seeing a deficit of over a million toys develop in November, the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation sent out many communications soliciting for help. The American public heard our appeal and recognized the need for aid. Hundreds of thousands of individuals, as well as a record number of organizations serving as National Corporate Sponsors, answered our call. Significant donations allowed for the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation to augment local toy drives with over 8 million toys, valued at over $77 million.

Toys for Tots does not set a goal of children supported in a given year–rather, our goal is to support every family with children seeking our assistance. The American public has never let Toys for Tots down. With the help from so many, Toys for Tots was able to accomplish our mission distributing a record number of over 20 million toys to 7.4 million children, who otherwise would have gone without. “Unprecedented” seems to be the buzz word for most 2020 events, and there’s no better way to describe the generosity of the American public and our Corporate Sponsors – it was truly unprecedented.

2020 Accomplishments

  • Distributed 20 million toys to 7.4 million less fortunate children from 808 local campaigns in all 50 states
  • Distributed over 2 million toys, books, and games to COVID-impacted families outside of the holiday season
  • Distributed 1.8 million books to children through the Toys for Tots Literacy Program
  • Distributed toys to 180,000 children through the Toys for Tots Native American Program
  • With support from Toys for Tots Sponsors, augmented local toy drives with over 8 million toys valued at over $77 million
  • Met all 20 standards of the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance and maintained a 96:4 Program to Support Ratio

About Marine Toys for Tots

Toys for Tots, a 73-year national charitable program run by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, provides happiness and hope to less fortunate children.  The toys, books, and other gifts collected and distributed by the Marines offer these children recognition, confidence, and a positive memory for a lifetime. It is such experiences that help children become responsible citizens and caring members of their community. Last year, the Marine Toys for Tots Program fulfilled the holiday hopes and dreams of over 7 million less fortunate children in over 800 communities nationwide.  Since 1947, over 272 million children have been assisted. The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is a non-for-profit organization authorized by the U.S. Marine Corps and the Department of Defense to provide fundraising and other necessary support for the annual Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program.  For more information, visit www.toysfortots.org.

SKOOG x SESAME WORKSHOP – A NEW WAY TO PLAY

SKOOG Inc., a media tech company with a mission to enrich children’s lives through creative and immersive play, today announced a global partnership with Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit organization behind Sesame Street, introducing a new interactive platform that merges tactile technology with an ever-expanding content library featuring Sesame Street characters. The platform combines multi-sensory play with fun, interactive content and meaningful learning experiences.

Originally focused on helping children with disabilities express their creativity through music, the team at SKOOG created a suite of unique hands-on technology devices that children of all abilities can enjoy. SKOOG’s patented platform includes a parent-controlled app with unique cube-like hardware that lets kids play and create without relying solely on a smartphone screen.

Sesame Street is SKOOG’s first children’s brand collaboration; the new platform will combine SKOOG technology with Sesame Workshop’s early childhood expertise and educational content to create a new hands-on – and screen-independent – way to play. By pressing soft, squeezable, interchangeable RFID buttons on their SKOOG Cube, little ones will be able to enjoy interactive songs, games, and stories featuring the voices of beloved Sesame Street characters.

“Children’s interactive play has never been as important as it is right now. In today’s complex digital world, we set out on a mission to help motivate and inspire children, leading the shift from passive consumption to active engagement—while enabling children of all abilities to play, engage, and consume safe and smart content independently,” said Gregg Stein, SKOOG Inc., CEO.

“As huge Sesame Street fans, we’re thrilled to be collaborating with Sesame Workshop, a community of creators, educators, and unforgettable characters built on diversity, equity, and inclusion,” continued Stein. “Together, we have created a best-in-class physical and digital creative sandbox that will empower millions of children to experience the joy of infinitely expandable personal play patterns, enabled by stories and audio books, branching adventures, games, musical instruments, songs and so much more.”

“Playful learning is at the heart of everything we do at Sesame Workshop, so we’re thrilled to work with SKOOG, Inc. to bring this enriching new play experience to life,” said Scott Chambers, Sesame Workshop’s Senior Vice President & General Manager, North America Media & Licensing. “We hope that our unique combination of SKOOG technology and Sesame Workshop’s powerful content will inspire kids and families to get creative together – with a little help from the Sesame Street Muppets!”

ABOUT KEITH HARING

Keith Haring was an iconic pop artist and graffiti artist inspired by the New York City street culture of the 1980s. Inspired by the originality and spontaneity of spray-paint graffiti Haring began producing chalk drawings on blank NYC Subway advertisement boards. As his career progressed his art spread to other mediums and he rose to the top of the art world with mass appeal. Haring continued to create public art with the intention of making art accessible to all, which resonates with the mission of Kidrobot.

ROYBI ROBOT – AI-powered EdTech

A growing number of states say their schools will stay closed for the rest of the 2019-20 academic year to stem the Coronavirus outbreak. At Roybi Robot, a leader in AI-powered EdTech and personalized education, they know first hand the importance of AI in connection with remote education and learning.

At ROYBI, they’re already noticing a big shift towards remote learning due to the recent circumstances and headlines. And throughout this all, one thing seems inevitable: school settings, as they stand today, will change. Online and remote learning will be systems that educational institutions will adopt for future emergencies. They envision a future where the new culture of learning begins at home through devices with sophisticated AI technology such as Roybi Robot. Artificial Intelligence allows educators to follow the child’s progress in a smarter way and provides a personalized approach to each child individually. Additionally, it provides a closer collaboration between parents and educators, because it can connect in a joint force to education.

With many uncertainties around the school closures, many educators have already started approaching distance and remote learning in the long term, but lack of personalized attention and progress tracking has been a major challenge for them. The role of artificial intelligence becomes even more significant for a modern world as it can monitor each child individually and provide feedback to educators more accurately than traditional approaches.

At Roybi, they are NOT saying to eliminate school and the classroom. They are saying that to save time and cost, we can be educating children more at home (by the educators) and use AI to personalize the educational experience for each child. They envision a future where they can connect learners, parents, educators, and even their Roybi Robots together while creating an engaging and interactive learning experience.

MotorTrend × HOT WHEELS

For more than 50 years Hot Wheels® has captured the imaginations of kids and adults worldwide with incredible, boundless automotive design possibilities. MotorTrend is bringing the kid in all of us inside the remarkable world of Hot Wheels in the original short-form series LIFE SIZE, streaming now on the MotorTrend App, the only subscription streaming service dedicated entirely to the motoring world.

In every episode of LIFE SIZE, professional race car driver and builder Nicole Lyons explores the real-world, full-scale versions of vehicles from the Hot Wheels Garage of Legends, an elite collection of Hot Wheels cars. These automotive creations are rarely seen. Lyons not only details the unique designs and interesting facts of each vehicle but gets to do something many people only dream of doing – taking the life size version for a test drive.

The first episode, “Bone Shaker”, streaming now on the MotorTrend App, shines the spotlight on what quickly became one of the most beloved, collectable Hot Wheels after debuting in 2006. Bone Shaker was created by the legendary “Mr. Hot Wheels” – Larry Wood. It’s an open roof, skull-grilled, spinal-column shifted hot rod that epitomizes what people love about both Hot Wheels and homemade cars. Lyons meets up with Larry Wood at the 2019 Grand National Roadster Show where they discuss Wood’s more than 50 years at Hot Wheels, the influences on Bone Shaker’s design and the subtle difference between the diecast hot rod and the life size version. Finally, Lyons takes the Bone Shaker for a drive, really opening it up so audiences get a sense for what 425 horsepower can do in a 1932 Ford style hot rod.

Upcoming episodes of LIFE SIZE premiere Mondays on the MotorTrend App including:

“Twin Mill”

Monday, March 30

The Twin Mill is largely thought of as the car that defined Hot Wheels and is so iconic that it was the first car Hot Wheels commissioned to make life size. Twin Mill has two engines, two superchargers and zero visibility. Lyons visits Action Vehicle Engineering (where these cars are maintained) and talks to Hot Wheels’ Sr. Design Manager for Die-Cast Vehicles, Bryan Benedict. Bryan lends insight into the monumental influence that the Twin Mill has had within Hot Wheels, his personal career and the car world at large. After Nicole and Bryan highlight all the full-size Twin Mill attributes, Lyons takes the temperamental, dual engine behemoth on a test drive through the desert where things get smoky.

“Hot Wheels Stunt Cars”

Monday, April 6

As kids, everyone loved sending Hot Wheels cars through a loop or off a jump – imagining what it would be like to do that with real cars. Hot Wheels decided to make that dream reality in 2012 when they sent two cars through a six-story loop and had another perform a record-breaking corkscrew jump. On this episode, Lyons meets with Alton Takeyasu, the man in charge of the stunt cars and Tanner Foust, one of the daring men to get behind the wheel. Lyons learns what it takes to make it through these crazy stunts and what modifications had to go into the cars. Afterwards, Lyons and Foust hop in the stunt cars –

the Loop Coupe and the Corkscrew Buggy – for a drive around Willow Springs Raceway, learning that these stripped-down powerhouses were not built for comfort.

“Brendan Vetusky Firebird”

Monday, April 13

Every car in LIFE SIZE was a car designed in 1:64th scale first and then built full scale. Brendon Vetusky, a Hot Wheels designer, did the opposite by making a full-sized 1967 Firebird first then turning it into a Hot Wheels die-cast vehicle. In this episode, Lyons meets Brendon in California where he built the Firebird in his driveway. Brendan takes viewers through all the modifications he made to the Pontiac as he built it into a stripped down, racecourse ready monster. Also, he talks about how he became a designer at Hot Wheels, his history with die-cast cars, and the overlap between making full sized cars and working for Mattel. Because the car was built for the track, Lyons hops in the passenger seat as Brendon crushes a rallycross course at Famoso Raceway.

“Deora II”

Monday, April 20

The Deora was one of the original Hot Wheels cars to come off the line in 1968. It was a weird looking take on a Dodge pickup concept with two surfboards that people loved. It has long been the illustration of how Hot Wheels captured the hearts and minds of young, American car lovers. In 2000, Hot Wheels issued the Deora II, and for their 35th anniversary in 2003, they commissioned the full-sized version. Lyons gives viewers the low down on the Chip Foose designed, full-size Deora II – from its bubble shaped cockpit to its supercharged rear engine powerhouse. Lyons then has fun taking Deora II on a cruise up the Pacific Coast Highway, where it turns heads.

“Character Cars”

Monday, April 27

Over the years Hot Wheels has created cars based upon fan favorite characters from the worlds of film and television. In the finale episode of LIFE SIZE, Lyons explores the challenges to designing a car based upon a fictional character, as well as the ability to stay faithful to the original when creating a life size version.

About LIFE SIZE Host Nicole Lyons

Nicole Lyons followed in her father’s footsteps as a race car driver and engine builder, eventually starting in the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Super Street class in 2005 before moving on to Super Gas and Super Comp the next season. Lyons is the first African American woman to compete in the NHRA Top Sportsman and American Drag Racing League Top Sportsman classes. She also made her mark in Outlaw Pro Mod, winning several events. In 2013, she started racing in the NASCAR Whelen Series, a points championship for short track racing. Not only is she the first African American woman to finish a Whelen race, she is the first woman to compete in NASCAR and NHRA in the same season. In addition to racing, Lyons owns the automotive restoration shop Cole Muscle Cars. She was also featured as an engine specialist in TV series “Car Warriors”.

HOT WHEELS LEGENDS TOUR

Hot Wheels announced the Hot Wheels Legends Tour is back for the third year and on the hunt for the next life-size custom car worthy of becoming a Hot Wheels die-cast toy. The world’s largest traveling car show will kick off in Miami on March 7 and make 18 stops at Walmart parking lots across the country looking for cars that embody Hot Wheels’ high standards of performance and design.

“After stopping in more than 20 different cities and seeing almost 10,000 custom builds over the last two years, we’ve been blown away by our fans’ talent and serious passion for cars,” said Ted Wu, Head of Hot Wheels Design, Mattel. “The Legends Tour brings together every aspect of car culture embodied by the Hot Wheels brand, and we’re excited to take it to the next level in an even bigger and better way in 2020.”

In 2019, Hot Wheels Legends tour brought together more than 90,000 fans and over 5,000 custom cars from across the United States, Mexico and Germany, with deep rooted ties to car culture across the globe. Continuing in Hot Wheels true challenger spirit, the third annual tour will expand to stops in new cities like Boston and Milwaukee, giving fans even more chances to compete to see their custom car become an iconic 1:64 die-cast toy vehicle.

At each stop, fans will have the chance to show off their unique custom builds from open-wheeled jet-inspired rides like the 2018 tour winning 2JetZ, to classic coupes like The Nash, which won in 2019. Hot Wheels designers and automotive influencers will select one finalist from each stop based on the criteria of authenticity, creativity and garage spirit. At the end of the tour, all 18 finalists will win a trip to the 2020 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, where they will be judged side-by-side to determine the grand prize winner that will become the next Hot Wheels die-cast toy. New for 2020, Mobil 1 will also be providing one additional spot for a vehicle to be featured in the final competition at SEMA, through a fan favorite contest to give the runners up from each local stop at second chance at being immortalized into the Hot Wheels Garage of Legends.

The 18 stops on this year’s tour will feature even more fun for the family with on-site experiences with partners Walmart, Dickies, A&W Root Beer, American Honda, Dynacraft Wheels and title sponsor Mobil 1. On tour for the first time this year will be Mobil 1’s new Cupid build, a custom truck that aims to inspire the next generation to celebrate car culture. Hot Wheels traveling vending machine truck will also be cruising to Walmart stores across the country between the stops so even more fans can get their own Hot Wheels die-casts.

“The Mobil 1 brand is proud to again support the Hot Wheels Legends Tour,” said Ryan Allen, Retail Marketing, ExxonMobil. “We’re looking forward to continuing our partnership with Hot Wheels to bring family-oriented, exceptional experience to fans. This year, Mobil 1 is going bigger and better by bringing the Fan Favorite to the tour, which will give fans around the world a chance to vote on their favorite car at each of the stops. We can’t wait to see what car fans love best.”

The Legends Tour will stop at Walmart stores in the following cities: Miami (March 7), Tampa (March 21), Atlanta (April 4), Houston (April 18), Dallas (April 25), St. Louis (May 30), Northwest Arkansas (June 6), Boston (June 20), Detroit (July 11), Milwaukee (July 25), Denver (August 8), Salt Lake City (August 15), Portland (August 29), San Jose (September 12), Los Angeles (September 26), San Diego (October 10), Phoenix (October 17). The tour will also make a special stop at Hot Wheels headquarters in El Segundo, Calif. on May 16 to celebrate the brand’s 52nd birthday including new surprises from our partners.

“We celebrated the highly successful 2019 Hot Wheels Legends Tour by taking a one-of-a-kind 1972 HondaN600 with a motorcycle engine to SEMA, so we look forward to what the 2020 Legends Tour might bring,” said Bruce Garfield, Licensing and Brand Manager at American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “Honda and Mattel have enjoyed a long, successful relationship and we look forward to what the future holds for our fans and the tuner community.”

Conceived in 1968 by an innovator, a rocket scientist and a car designer, Hot Wheels 1:64 scale die-cast cars were designed to look awesome and perform. Five decades later, Hot Wheels is the number one selling toy in the world* with more than 16.5 cars sold every second.
