SPOTLIGHT ON MARÍA BECERRA

María Becerra is a tour de force. The Argentinian songstress, known as “la nena de Argentina” released her second EP in 2021, embracing and experimenting with hip-hop, reggaeton, trap, R&B, salsa, and more to craft her new sound. Described as a “leading voice in Argentina’s urban pop movement,” Becerra is a star on the rise. As the first Latin artist signed to indie American record label 300 Entertainment and with a Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist pending, it is clear despite her successes already, she is only just beginning. She sat down to answer a few questions for 360 Magazine including how she got her start in music, the story behind her nickname, her influences, and what to expect from her in 2022.

How would you describe your style of music?

I believe I have a very melodic and versatile musical style. In the studio, we always try to ensure that each song has a varied melodic line, with different degrees of nuances. Above all, we aspire to make a melody that sounds familiar and enjoyable to the public. I have experimented with several genres and in all of them, I was able to find how to make my own style fit within them. I hear they call me ‘the Queen of Weeping,” which makes me laugh. I have many songs that are for dogging and dancing, and others that are a bit sadder.

How did you first become interested in creating music?

From a very young age, art was important to me; I learned how to sing, act and dance as a child. In my home, we listened to a lot of music. For a while, I did covers of famous songs as I learned. I think I was absorbing different music and styles to the point where I felt the need to start expressing myself with my own works. Despite this desire, I was not 100% confident in my abilities yet and had many insecurities. I was afraid of how the public would receive my music and doubted if this was my true path. Luckily, things turned out in a positive way. Today, I have no doubts that yes, I was born to create music and it brings me a lot of joy.

Which songs are you most proud of?

Mm, they are all special to me and fill me with pride. It is difficult for me to pick just one. If I had to choose one, my first instinct is to say Ademas De Mi or Mi Debilidad, that song is very significant to me as an artist. I cried a lot while making it and recording the video.

You were a Youtuber before becoming a singer. How was the experience of transitioning from an influencer to an artist?

YouTube was a beautiful experience, and I am grateful that the opportunity was a positive one. The change in my life was progressive over time. Being on YouTube allowed me the chance for people to get to know me, while I gained confidence and worked on my own fears as a public person. Obviously, my life and my career are now on another path but having the experience of being a YouTuber served as the foundation for everything that has gone on to happen in my life.

What is your favorite fan moment?

My favorite moments are when my fans tell me everything in my music speaks to them. It’s amazing how something I pour so much love into in the studio can reach so many people and positively influence their lives. In live concerts, we would raise up different fans to speak with them, and at one performance a girl told us that with my song ‘Tell Me How I Do,’ she declared her love to her girlfriend. I found it beautiful. Those moments fill me with incredible happiness.

Maria Becerra by Christian Garfa 2

How does it feel to have reached this level of popularity so young?

It still doesn’t feel real. It is incredible to me, but I just try and take things one day at a time. I try to appreciate the small things and remain the humble girl I’ve always been because that’s still who I am. I surround myself a lot with my friends, my family, and my pets who are my rocks – they remind me of where I come from and who I am.

Why do you refer to yourself as the Girl from Argentina?

In general, it is known that many of the best discoveries occur accidentally, and this was no exception. When we recorded Animal with Cazzu, in the song’s lyrics I sing “Las Nenas de Argentina,” as if referring to the two of us. Apparently, when people listened, they heard “La nena de Argentina” and everyone loved that I referred to myself that way. From there, I started to use it as my brand, and I feel it gives me a special power for communicating to the world my music and I are made and from Argentina.

Who are your influences?

Wow, so many artists! I especially love and admire Ariana Grande, Beyoncé, and Rihanna. They are very important role models to me. I watch their shows and videos a lot.

How did it feel to join a label as prestigious as 300 Entertainment?

I am honored and very happy to work with them. They have always been supportive, even affectionate, towards me. Unfortunately, their office is in Los Angeles, so we don’t have the opportunity to see each other that often, but when we do it’s always a special moment. I know the whole team at 300 takes care of me and wants the best for me, so I respect them and thank them very much.

Your most recent EP blended many different genres. Which genres would you like to experiment with in the future?

I like Bachata, and I think more songs like this are coming from me. Yet as I said before, I don’t want to pigeonhole myself. I love to experiment with different genres and different sounds, and that is what is important to me as I create music today. So, in 2022 you and all my fans can be surprised with what I come out with next.

What can we expect to see from you in the future?

I feel like 2022 is going to be a great year. My team and I are working hard to make it so. I’m locked in the studio, and many of the songs we are currently working on are tremendous. I am already anxious for people to listen to them. This year, a new album is coming, as well as trips and several shows in Argentina and Europe. We hope to reach many places and have everyone dance and sing to my music.

Joy Crookes – Skin

BRIT Award nominated singer/songwriter Joy Crookes releases her highly anticipated debut album, Skin.  The 13 track body of work includes previously releases singles, “Feet Don’t Fail Me Now,” “When You Were Mine,” “Skin,” and the newest, “Trouble.” Get it HERE via Epic Records/Insanity.

With Crookes credited as an executive producer on the album, alongside the formidable Blue May (Blood Orange), Skin is a hugely personal, game-changing body of work from one of the UK’s boldest and brightest young talents. A collection of songs built and honed throughout her adolescence and into her early twenties, and finished last year within the most turbulent of circumstances, Skin touches on topics such as mental health, relationships, and politics all with grace and sensitivity. Crookes has created a truly special body of work that is both perfectly of the moment, and entirely timeless. Skin’s album artwork is shot by Carlota Guerrero, who has previously worked with Arca, Chloe x Halle, and Solange for all of her imagery for A Seat At The Table.

Already, the album has garnered Crookes a massive amount of acclaim worldwide. British Vogue has dubbed her, “undoubtedly one of the most exciting artists to emerge in the music scene this year,” while The Guardian has praised her “effortlessly nuanced and individual melodic sensibility.” I-D has praised her music as “powerful” while Complex has noted her “soul-stirring vocals,” and Billboard has similarly highlighted her “unfaltering vocal performance.”  The New York Times in a recent profile may have summed up Skin best:  “Crookes offers listeners a nuanced and candid exploration of her multiracial identity. At a time when many conversations about race in the arts and calls for change have only recently begun, Crookes’ commitment to vulnerability in her storytelling has helped her connect with a growing—and loyal—fan base.”

Up next, Joy Crookes will tour the UK later this year in celebration of the new album; the run kicks off in November in Brighton and extends into next year when she will take the tour to Europe. Full list of dates below.

He is currently nominated for 2 MTV VMAs for Best Song and Best Collaboration for “Mood” with 24kGoldn. He has added to his accolades four RIAA-certified gold singles and collaborations with everyone from Travis Barker to Clean Bandit to Lil Baby. About iann dior

Multi-platinum selling, chart topping, iann dior has become one of the industry’s fastest rising new artists. Puerto Rican-born, Corpus Christi-raised Michael Iann Olmo (also known as “iann dior”) found success with the first song he ever wrote. After uploading to SoundCloud, the song gained 10,000 plays in its first week and caught the ear of Internet Money founder Taz Taylor who invited the budding songwriter to work with him in LA. Shortly afterwards, iann dior inked a deal with Elliot Grainge’s label 10K Projects in April 2019 and released his project Industry Plant.

2020 was a breakout year for the burgeoning star with his feature on the Billboard Hot 100 #1 hit “Mood” with 24KGoldn, which is now certified 4x platinum and charted inside the Top 10 for 33 weeks, spending 8 consecutive weeks at #1. The duo performed the track on the American Music Awards, are currently nominated for 2 VMAS for Song of the Year and Best Collaboration, and have received additional nominations for 3 Billboard Music Awards and 1 iHeartRadio Music Award for their success with “Mood.” iann has released songs with acts like Lil Baby, Machine Gun Kelly, Travis Barker, Clean Bandit, Trippie Redd and more. Known as a highly versatile talent, his work has charted in Alternative, Pop, Rap and Electronic/Dance genres and has earned him the #1 spot on Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart. Most recently he released new tracks “shots in the dark” ft. Trippie Redd and “don’t wanna believe” which have already amassed over 30 million streams and video views worldwide. As he prepares to release more new music in 2021, iann dior assures his fans this is only the beginning. “A number one album is up next,” he said, “I want to become the number one artist in the world, and I am fully determined and obsessed with being the greatest.”

Since scoring his first #1 with the four-times-platinum “Let Me Love You” ft. Justin Bieber, DJ Snake has triumphed with such colossal hits as “You Know You Like It” (with AlunaGeorge), “Lean On” (with Major Lazer, featuring MØ) and “Taki Taki” ft. Selena Gomez, Ozuna & Cardi B. With its title translating to “the freedom to do whatever one chooses,” his sophomore album Carte Blanche arrived in July 2019 and shot to #1 on Billboard’s US Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart, in addition to reaching the top 50 on the Billboard 200. Thanks to the tremendous success of “Let Me Love You,” “Lean On,” and “Taki Taki,” DJ Snake now holds the distinction of being one of only two dance artists in the world to have three songs amass more than a billion streams on Spotify.

James Vincent McMorrow × Paradise

James Vincent McMorrow shares the music video for Paradise from his upcoming album, Grapefruit Season, to be released on September 17.

“McMorrow has a soul voice to cherish” – Guardian

“The ever-shifting Irish singer-songwriter…it works” – Sunday Times, Hottest Tracks

“A deft collaboration, with James pushing his music onto a different realm, whilst maintaining that recognizable emotional pull” – CLASH

“Lyrically raw and immensely quotable” – The Forty Five

James Vincent McMorrow shares the video for new single Paradise, which is available now via Sony Music UK/RCA Records. Paradise is the latest taste of James’ much-anticipated new album Grapefruit Season – which also features teaser singles Headlights, Gone, and I Should Go (with Kenny Beats) – and is now set for release on September 17.

Produced by James alongside Paul Epworth and Lil Silva, Paradise is about pretending everything is fine when, beneath the surface, it really isn’t. Initially struggling to find its visual concept, the Paradise video started as an off-hand remark (“why don’t I just dig out my rollerblades and film myself learning to skate again in the park behind my house?”) but now feels like the perfect fit to the track’s uplifting, feel-good but melancholic center.

Paradise further previews Grapefruit Season, James Vincent McMorrow’s upcoming, fifth studio album – and one in which the artist, producer, and songwriter pushes himself (and his sound) in all new ways. The record was recorded between London, Los Angeles, and Dublin, largely before the pandemic struck. It embraces the timeless yet timely fact that life is chaos; the idea of growing up, but as Paradise suggests, still feeling none the wiser. Each song is held together by McMorrow’s instantly-identifiable voice, an untethered musical imagination, and (from dancehall to soul, country to R&B) purposefully little else in its pursuit of fear-free pop music. Even the title, Grapefruit Season, seems to signpost doing simply what you want, rather than what you are supposed to do – it was inspired by James watching his mum eat grapefruit as a kid, and the idea that what’s good for you may not actually be pleasurable.

Throughout the emotional highs and lows of Grapefruit Season, you are reminded of the risks James Vincent McMorrow has taken since the singer-songwriter roots of debut album Early In The Morning (which turned ten in 2020); but also that those same instincts – to follow inspiration wherever it leads, and to be as brutally honest possible – remain a refreshing constant. Whilst there may always be trouble in Paradise, what’s emerged is James Vincent McMorrow’s most essential album to date.

James also made headlines recently playing the first concert in Ireland with a live audience since the beginning of the pandemic (tickets sold out in just 30 seconds). With festivals including Latitude and Isle of Wight confirmed to follow this summer, McMorrow’s UK and European tour for early 2022 includes a London date at Kentish Town Forum on February 21 and two homecoming shows at Dublin’s Olympia Theatre on April 19-20.

Still Woozy × That’s Life

Still Woozy premieres his new single and official video for That’s Life from his debut album, If This Isn’t Nice, I Don’t Know What Is.

One of the most inventive and multifaceted new voices in the alt-pop world, Still Woozy, returns today with his sweetly lovesick new track That’s Life, released via Still Woozy Productions/Interscope Records. It’s the fourth single from Still Woozy’s forthcoming full-length debut, If This Isn’t Nice, I Don’t Know What Is. The album is due out on August 13.

Wrapped in a glistening exterior, That’s Life captures the sensation of riding out life’s highs and lows. In creating the track, the Portland-based singer/songwriter/producer otherwise known as Sven Gamsky merged lush beats, big bass grooves, and heart-on-sleeve lyrics delivered in his tender vocals. The result is a bittersweet song revealing Still Woozy’s gift for spinning painful feelings into bright and sunny melody.

“This song is my attempt to make peace with life’s inconsistencies,” says Still Woozy.

Along with “That’s Life,” If This Isn’t Nice, I Don’t Know What Is will feature several previously released singles, including Kenny (hailed by Wonderland Magazine as “an intimate and imbued soundscape, filled with alt-pop sensibilities and chilled out vocals”), Rocky (a track that inspired This Song Is Sick to proclaim: “When it comes to the momentous lo-fi/indie pop boom that’s happening right now, Still Woozy is at the head of the pack”), and Window (praised by Earmilk as a “promising first step of the new decade that expands on his groovy DIY aesthetic while maintaining a touching intimacy”).

Gamsky grew up in the Bay Area and began playing guitar as a little kid. By middle school, he’d started writing his own songs, and later honed his guitar skills by playing in a math-rock band. After further developing his musicality by studying classical guitar and electronic music at UC Santa Cruz, he released his debut EP Lately in 2019. Featuring collaborations with Omar Apollo, the self-recorded five-song project includes singles like “Habit” (a track that’s now amassed over 113 million streams on Spotify). Over the years, Still Woozy has taken the stage at major festivals like Coachella, Governor’s Ball, Lollapalooza, and Austin City Limits, in addition to completing a sold-out North American headlining tour.

Nothing But Thieves Releases New Single – “Impossible”

Southend five-piece Nothing But Thieves have announced the release of new single Impossible, which is available now. The song follows recent singles Is Everybody Going Crazy? and Real Love Song and is taken from their forthcoming third album Moral Panic. They have also announced a huge UK, Ireland and European tour for Autumn 2021, including a headline show at London’s The O2.

THEIR NEW ALBUM, MORAL PANIC, WILL BE RELEASED ON OCTOBER 23RD.

LISTEN: IMPOSSIBLE

Nothing But Thieves are no strangers to powerful anthems, and with Impossible, they’ve written another vast soundscape. Produced by Mike Crossey (The 1975, Arctic Monkeys and Wolf Alice), Impossible is an exuberant track opening with raw emotion before launching into a huge chorus full of elated melody and affecting lyrics of hope and passion. The band says,

“In a way ‘Impossible’ is the complete antithesis of everything else on the album, which has a lot of anxiety and confusion about what’s happening on this planet. This became the opposite, zooming into one person’s head, just being lifted up and transported by a feeling of possibility and hope. It was a moment of relief that both we and the album needed.”

Recent single Real Love Song was included as Annie Mac’s Hottest Record in the World before being added to the B List on Radio 1 and has already achieved 3.5 million streams worldwide. Richly anthemic and wildly grandiose, it builds triumphantly with a hymn-like euphoric melody alongside singer Conor’s poignant almost operatic vocals. Amidst mesmerising animations and a gritty performance from the band themselves, the Basak Erol directed video showcases the dreamlike story of three characters seeking love in the wrong places.

Remaining on the Radio 1 Playlist for 8 weeks, as one of the longest running tracks on their playlist, Is Everybody Going Crazy? was the band’s biggest Airplay hit to date, achieving almost 12 million streams worldwide and welcomed the exciting return of Nothing But Thieves. A gritty dark rock song, lyrically it discusses a fractured, barely recognisable civilisation and desire for escapism, which proved curiously relevant to the world right now.

Real Love Song, Is Everybody Going Crazy? and recent release Unperson is the band’s first new music since their 2018 EPWhat Did You Think When You Made Me This Way, their 2017 acclaimed album Broken Machine, which charted at #2 in the UK album chart, and their debut self-titled album Nothing But Thieves. Their third album Moral Panic will be released on 23rdOctober, with the pre-orders now live here and Unperson available as an instant grat.

The past few years have been quite a ride for Nothing But Thieves. Amassing over 700,000 album sales and 750 million streams so far, they have built up a loyal and wide following for their impactful alt rock sound, cementing themselves as one of the best current rock bands in the world. Selling 150,000 tickets on their last album campaign, which included a sold-out show at London’s Alexandra Palace and selling out their entire worldwide Broken Machine headline tour, their success has been global.

The band have performed on TV shows such as The Late Late Show With James Corden and Jimmy Kimmel Live!, after their debut became the bestselling debut from a UK rock band in the US in 2015 and played packed out international shows from Poland to Amsterdam, where they headlined an arena to 6,000 fans. After intimately debuting new songs at Tufnell Park Dome earlier recently for a BRITs/War Child gig, they were set to tour internationally earlier this year, including a show to 6,500 people at Moscow Adrenaline Stadium.

They have now announced a brand new UK, Ireland and European tour for Autumn 2021, including their biggest ever headline London show at O2 Arena. Tickets go on sale on Friday 18th September at 9am, with pre-sale tickets available from Wednesday 16thSeptember at 9am for all pre-orders of ‘Moral Panic’. Full dates are as follows:

“Too Close” can be streamed here and includes singles “In These Arms,” “Little Bit of Love,” and “Bits & Pieces.”

JP explains, “It feels like it’s been a while since I’ve released a collection of songs, so I’m very happy to be putting this out there. I see ‘Too Close’ as a precursor to my second album. I’d like to think of these songs as part of the same collection.”

The body of work is led by latest single “Little Bit of Love,” which is the uplifting anthem that JP released to comfort fans throughout the global COVID-19 pandemic

Other tracks included on the record include the Mr Hudson produced “Bits & Pieces” and the soaring “In These Arms”  which was produced by Al Shux. The title track is a song based on that pivotal moment many people have found themselves in before stepping into a romantic relationship.

“I’d love to see what a brain scan would look like in that moment,” JP ponders. “I’m pretty sure it would be a huge ball of light.”

Beyond the exciting release of “Too Close,” more big things are set for JP Cooper in 2020. JP announced an extensive UK and European tour in the fall, including a show at London’s Brixton Academy. The full list of tour dates can be found here.
