ABOUT SPIRITED:

Each Christmas Eve, the Ghost of Christmas Present (Will Ferrell) selects one dark soul to be reformed by a visit from three spirits. But this season, he picked the wrong Scrooge. Clint Briggs (Ryan Reynolds) turns the tables on his ghostly host until Present finds himself reexamining his own past, present and future. For the first time, ‘A Christmas Carol’ is told from the perspective of the ghosts in this hilarious musical twist on the classic Dickens tale. From director Sean Anders (“Daddy’s Home,” “Instant Family”), written by Sean Anders and John Morris, with original songs by Oscar winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (“La La Land” & “The Greatest Showman”) and production numbers choreographed by Chloe Arnold (“The Late Late Show with James Corden”), this modern retelling is a sweet and spicy holiday treat.

QUEEN THE GREATEST

A celebration of 50 of the greatest moments from the Queen story so far.

A 50-week YouTube series celebrating key moments in Queen’s history reminding us why Queen and their music continue to beloved across the world.

Episode 20: “1980: Queen At The Movies Take 1: Flash Gordon”

An unusual venture sees Queen take on a movie soundtrack, with the band determined that the resulting album should be as musically rewarding as their previous ones. Brian and Roger describe how this exciting project came about and broke new ground.

“I think we were quite well ahead of the game there.” – Roger Taylor

“Oh, its not going to work for my film.” – Dino De Laurentiis, Producer

Queen The Greatest Episodes 1-19 Out Now Here.

The Greatest, the journey through the Queen story so far celebrating their biggest songs, performances and achievements, this week looks back at a fascinating new departure for the band.

For what would be the band’s ninth studio album, this would also be a first for them, their first movie soundtrack. It is, of course, Flash Gordon. For a band given to aural spectacular, it seemed a perfect fit although producer Dino De Laurentiis did have his moment of doubt.

In 1980, work on Flash began in tandem with the recording sessions for The Game, but while this would obviously represent something of a departure for the band, they were determined to make it as much a Queen album as their previous ones.

Set against some rare footage of the band live performing “Flash” to image track in London’s Advision Studios, Brian and Roger explain how the project came about.

Roger Taylor: “It was an interesting offer really from (producer) Dino De Laurentiis, and Joe Smith, head of Elektra Records, engineered the whole thing really. And, it was interesting actually, because the film was a big hit in Europe and UK, and flopped completely in America.”

Brian May: “But it became a cult video thing later on. I feel pretty proud of the Flash thing, because really this was the first time that a rock soundtrack had actually been put to a movie which wasnt about rock music.

“There was a lot of resistance to it, a lot of people said it wouldnt work, including Dino. When he first heard it, he went “oh, its not going to work for my film,” the idea of the rock music being in there. But he pretty soon became accustomed to the idea, and he loved it in the end.”

Roger Taylor: “It actually was sort of Brians thing really, and it really did forge quite a lot. I mean you never heard heavy rock – a lot of it was quite heavy – music on a film, and so this battle sequence is really quite ground breaking.”

Brian May: “It was, I think, the first.”

Roger Taylor: “And now you cant see a movie without soundtrack albums coming at you and heavy music.”

Brian May: “And heavy guitars.”

Roger Taylor: “So I think we were quite well ahead of the game there.”

As The Game album started to take up more of the band’s time, Brian took on the responsibility of getting the soundtrack over the line. The title track, “Flash,” would be the only single released, but the album is crammed full of classic Queen tunes  not least “The Hero,” which became a stellar opening to the live showߪ.as can be seen in this band performance in Milton Keynes, UK, June 5 1982.

Understandably, this project begged the question at the time as to whether Queen would consider doing another movie soundtrack. Roger Taylor said at the time: “This film thing was very interesting, and if somebody comes up with a really fascinating offer for another film, perhaps we might think about that. But, no, were a rock and roll band, think we always will be.”

Queen did of course make a return to scoring with their second soundtrack six years later, for another science-fiction fantasy, the hugely successful Highlander.

More of that later.

She Ball x STUNNAMAN

Cash Money Records and NCREDIBLE is readying the She Ball Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. The music will be inspired by or featured in the forthcoming film She Ball produced by Cash Money Films and NCREDIBLE, arriving on-demand and in theaters Summer 2021.

The first single from the movie, STUNNAMAN” with BirdmanRoddy Ricch, and Lil Wayne drops today with a cinematic music video. The song will also be immediately serviced to radio. “STUNNAMAN” fuses a jagged beat to a signature melodic flow from Roddy Ricch. Meanwhile, Birdman and Lil Wayne pull up with old-school Like Father, Like Son-style interplay. Three generations of rap shine on this bold and bright banger.

The “STUNNAMAN” video will make its broadcast premiere on MTV and BET on May 21.

“If anything, the soundtrack will be a driving force of She Ball,” said Nick Cannon. “The music is truly the heartbeat of the film. To have my producing partners Birdman and Chris Brown on the album as well is an honor. We’ve got legends and all of the people who are really popping right now on the track-list. It references those soundtracks we all grew up on that meant something from a generational standpoint. When you hear the music or watch the movie, I want you to feel embedded in the culture. I saw Do the Right thingLove and Basketball, and Above The Rim as a kid. We cherish those as national treasures now. That’s our goal.”

Birdman added, “I said to Nick, if we’re going to do this, we’ve got to do it as big as possible. As important as the movie was, the Soundtrack was just as important. We were able to put together some powerful records and collaborations worthy of this film. It takes everything to the next level.”

The movie and soundtrack represent a union between Nick Cannon who wrote, produced, and directed She Ball and Multi-Platinum icons Bryan ‘Birdman’ Williams & Chris Brown. All three serve as producers and are starring alongside some of the most influential entertainers today including Cedric The Entertainer, DC Young Fly, Evan Ross, and Faizon Love in the movie.

This film is an important community-focused project dealing with race, gentrification, criminal justice and women’s empowerment.  The movie tells a story of triumph against all odds as a young female athlete played by Melody Rae Kandil faces trials, tribulations, and triumphs on and off the basketball court.

The Serpent Soundtrack

Dubois Records releases a soundtrack album for the BBC and Netflix limited series The Serpent.

The album features selections of the show’s original music composed by Dominik Scherrer who has worked on The Missing, Primeval, Ripper Street, The Widow, and Requiem.

The Serpent is developed by Tom Shankland & Richard Warlow and stars Tahar Ramin, Jenna Coleman, Billy Howle, Mathilde Warnier, Ellie Bamber, Alice Englert, Gregoire Isvarine, Sahajak Boonthanakit and Fabien Frankel. The 8-part drama tells the true story of Charles Sobhraj, a murderer, thief and seductive master of disguise, who was the the chief suspect in the unsolved murders of up to 20 young Western travelers on Asia’s hippie trail in the mid-70s.

The Mammoth Screen production currently airs in the UK every Sunday night on BBC One and will premiere worldwide on Netflix later this year.

“This is a real story: a very fascinating one, but also an extremely disturbing and frightening one. The victims were real, and some of the characters are still alive. The material needed to be treated with respect and sensationalism avoided,” said composer Dominik Scherrer on his inspiration for scoring the serial killer drama.

Lead director Tom Shankland and I already discussed this project five years ago. It had been in preparation for a long time. In terms of the music, Tom wanted the story to be told through a haze of psychedelic 1970s upheaval: drugs, ruthless politics, the old world order changed,” continued Scherrer.

For a story set in the 70s, it would have been all too easy to resort to cliches such as funky Wah-wah guitars. We wanted the music to live in this tumultuous, cultural restlessness, and to create an environment, where Sobhraj’s brutality could breed, and go undetected for so long.

Charles Sobhraj was an admirer of Nietzsche, dominating and subjugating his victims, as if he saw himself perhaps as the superior ‘Ubermensch’. I was keen to infuse the musical strands with a kind of Zarathustran drive to banish otherworldly values. The young hippies were in search of these otherworldly values, they wanted to explore the teachings of Eastern spirituality, and Sobhraj put a brutal end to their journeys.

In the 1970s, composers like Steve Reich and Philip Glass started to draw influence from Asian music. Their study of southeast Asian music, such as gamelan, on its subsequent influence on Western minimalism was an inspiration for the score of The Serpent. Their music felt forward-thinking, which was important as we wanted to avoid the notion of ‘retro’ throughout the score. ‘Retro’ would have resulted in cosy nostalgia, the opposite of what we wanted.

“Score recording took part in London  and Bangkok, where most of the filming took place as well. At Karma Sound Studios, some of the country’s finest singers and instrumentalists played gongs, ranat ek (Thai marimba), phin (Thai mandolin), khaen (Thai harmonica), together with a Western line-up, and myself on piano in the same room. Other solos were simply recorded in Bangkok hotel rooms. The idea was not to pursue ethnic authenticity, but to evoke the aforementioned cultural tumult clashing with the kind of eastern spirituality as explored by George Harrison and John Lennon.”

“Another influence were the new developments in advanced synthesis, which in the mid 1970s was seen a major new avenue in music creation and performance. In the early 70s, a huge, room-filling modular synthesiser called “Tonto” was built and musicians created extraordinary sounds with what is still now the largest polyphonic analogue synth ever built. It was subsequently used by Steve Wonder and Michael Jackson. It still exists, and our synth programmer Stephan Baer, who happened to use the same technician who also serviced ‘Tonto’, managed to recreate patches of that synth, which contribute to the sound of “The Serpent” with unexpected and brutal elements.”

Sight & Sound said, “Dominik Scherrer’s marvellous score, a riot of analogue synths and percussion drawing on exploitation movie soundtracks of yore to intoxicating effect, and adding just a hint of illicit viewing pleasure to spice up the schedules.”

About Dominik Scherrer:

Dominik Scherrer has created award-winning music for some of the finest film and television dramas in recent years. He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for the critically-acclaimed series The Missing, and recently won his second Ivor Novello Award for his score on Netflix’s Requiem, which he co-composed with Natasha Khan, aka Bat for Lashes.

Dominik first won the prestigious British Ivor Novello Award and received a Royal Television Society (RTS) nomination for his riveting score on Ripper Street. He earned two additional Ivor Novello nominations for Amazon’s The Collection and the British crime series Agatha Christie’s Marple.

Dominik recently reunited with the Williams brothers to score Amazon’s thriller series The Widow, starring Kate Beckinsale. He also scored the landmark dramas An Inspector Calls and Monroe.

Equally accomplished in film scoring, Dominik’s credits include The Nine Lives of Tomas Katz for which Dominik won the Best Music Award at Spain’s Estapona Film Festival; Alice Through The Looking Glass starring Kate Beckinsale; Alina Marazzi’s Tutto Parla Di Te (All About You); and Scenes of a Sexual Naturestarring Ewan McGregor and Hugh Bonneville. He scored Appetitestarring Ute Lemper, and wrote the film’s title song which reached No. 2 on the UK classical charts.

Dominik also created, directed and composed the kinetic operaHell for Leather, which premiered at Sundance and won 10 awards on the festival circuit.

In addition to scoring film and TV, he produces sound design and composes for fine art installations – most notably for artist Suki Chan – and creates performance music for theatre.

Dominik is a British-Swiss composer and works from his studio in London.

Gretel and Hansel: Soundtrack Release

On behalf of Orion Pictures, we are thrilled to announce Waxwork Records has launched

GRETEL & HANSEL Original Motion Picture Soundtrack by ROB.

Inspired by the twisted tale, the Paris-based composer created “a haunting and hypnotic electronic” sound for the soundtrack released as a deluxe vinyl featuring the complete film music by ROB (Maniac, Revenge, Horns), 180 gram colored vinyl, new artwork by Sara Deck, old-style tip-on gatefold jackets with satin coating, and heavyweight printed inner sleeves. The soundtrack is also available on streaming platforms Apple Music Apple Music, iTunes and Spotify Spotify. Enjoy your listen and catch GRETEL & HANSEL starring Sophia Lillis in theaters this weekend!

Now Playing in Theaters Everywhere! A long time ago in a distant fairytale countryside, a young girl (Sophia Lillis, IT Chapter 2) leads her little brother (Sammy Leakey) into a dark wood in desperate search of food and work, only to stumble upon a nexus of terrifying evil.
