Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is honored to present the next chapter of its Boat Tail coachbuilt commission—one of just three that have been, and ever will be, made.
The essence of Rolls-Royce Coachbuild is that each commission tells a story entirely unique and personal to its owner, reflecting their own history, tastes and sensibilities. With this in mind, Boat Tail, revealed at Concorso d’Eleganza, Villa d’Este 2022, on the shores of Lake Como in northern Italy, is a masterwork of restraint, sophistication, elegance and attention to detail.
Boat Tail is entirely hand-built, with the body panels fashioned from vast, single sheets of aluminum to create the distinctive outline inspired by the racing yachts of the early 20th century. In every respect, this remarkable motor car is entirely unique.
This Boat Tail design was commissioned by a patron whose family business has grown from his father’s origins in the pearling industry. Widely traveled, internationally educated and cosmopolitan in his tastes and influences, the client is an established patron of the arts, who additionally owns a sizable collection of classic and modern cars, housed in a dedicated private museum.
The foundation of the color is a shimmering blend of oyster and soft rose, with large white and bronze mica flakes adding a unique pearlescent quality that changes subtly under different light conditions. The contrasting cognac-colored bonnet, created specifically for this Boat Tail, contains fine bronze and gold colored aluminum mica flakes complete with a layer of crystal and iced matte clear coat, adding significant warmth and depth to the car’s appearance. The technical fiber lower sills of Boat Tail incorporate a rose gold woven thread.
The rear deck, which houses Boat Tail’s unique ‘butterfly-design’ hosting suite, is swathed in Royal Walnut veneer, inlaid with rose gold-plated pinstripes with a satin-brushed finish to ensure a sensitive and sophisticated appearance. The Royal Walnut was specifically selected by the client for its beautiful properties as it matures over time, a material that will gradually transition to the tonal properties of the cognac color. From above, one observes a harmonious balance and satin effect of the iced bonnet and tactile wooden rear deck, in contrast with the high-gloss front and side perspectives.
From the front, the Pantheon Grille, milled from a single, solid billet of aluminum, is graced with a Spirit of Ecstasy fashioned in rose gold.
The interior is a beautifully curated combination of perfectly matched cognac and oyster-colored leathers and Royal Walnut veneer, with rose gold and mother-of-pearl accents throughout. The leathers, complete with a pearlescent finish, accentuate the surfaces and forms of Boat Tail’s seats and interior design. The transmission tunnel is formed from Royal Walnut veneer with rose gold pinstripes, drawing a direct visual reference to the rear deck and adding a glowing warmth to Boat Tail’s interior.
The centerpiece of the dashboard is a timepiece made from mother-of-pearl, chosen and supplied by the client from his own collection; the fascia of which is pure and minimal in its appearance so as not to detract from the precious material. The same prized substance graces the control switches and instrument dials, creating a strong visual and material connection between the car, the owner, and his family heritage.
RM Sotheby’s is pleased to announce the forthcoming sale of a true “one-of-one” example of one of the most excellent cars ever created, the iconic McLaren F1. This 1998 McLaren F1 is being offered through RM Sotheby’s proprietary online platform, Sotheby’s Sealed. The sale will begin on 18 August 2022, and bidding will remain for 48 hours.

Chassis number 059 is the only F1 to leave the factory with a unique headlight setup, making it a true one-off among the 64 road cars constructed and instantly recognizable to those in the know. Midway through the McLaren F1’s production and once some customer cars had started to accumulate mileage, it was discovered that the car had a minor Achilles heel in its headlights. Looking to rectify this, the factory quickly came up with a solution. The car presented here, chassis number 059, would be the testbed: the existing headlight internals was replaced with those from the BMW Z1 Roadster, and the headlight housings were made slightly shorter.
Acquiring this F1 would allow one to join that exclusive club of owners and drivers, achieving something that millions of enthusiasts can only dream of but few, perhaps only a few hundred people, have ever achieved. Having not been seen publicly for the last decade in its current ownership, this represents a remarkable opportunity to acquire a unique and significant F1.
Thornley Kelham has revealed the first entirely new project in its ‘European’ range of reimagined automotive legends: the Jaguar XK European, which builds on the success of their Lancia Aurelia Outlaw. Taking a derelict donor Jaguar XK as its base, the bespoke program allows customers to transform their car into ‘European’ specification, featuring an all-alloy lightweight body penned by McLaren P1 designer Paul Howse, and a full range of performance and comfort upgrades and enhancements.
Most of the work is carried out in-house by Thornley Kelham, together with a small number of trusted and talented partners. As well as its work in concours restoration, the in-house team of craftsmen is expert in race-winning classic motorsport engines, and numerous previous projects have involved bespoke enhancements from uprated suspension, steering and brakes, to conversion to fuel injection, and the design and execution of convenience features such as air-conditioning and high-end ICE. In the ‘European’ program, all that experience comes to bear to create the ultimate incarnation of a number of European sports cars of the golden era, including the Jaguar XK.
Howse’ vision celebrates the original beautifully aerodynamic lines in a way that remains true to the car’s original intentions, echoing the kind of work applied to the E-Type Lightweight. The first major task was to lower the roofline so that the proportions become more elegant and purposeful. The next was to add some curvature to the sides; all the body sections now have an acceleration to them which adds sculpture and muscle but also lightness. The arches are wider both at the front and more significantly at the rear with wider alloy wire wheels filling them out nicely, giving a ‘road racer ‘stance. The brightwork was also removed and instead a subtle crease was introduced down the bonnet which follows the split-screen into the roof and washes out over the roof, which is more smoothly integrated into the overall form, as are the rear arches. At the rear, the tail now sweeps up to create a more teardrop form. The rear lamps are nestled into the bodywork and the headlights have had the chrome bezels removed, cleaning up the appearance.
Inside, a completely redesigned dashboard and interior echo the original but with a dedication to modernizing and improving wherever possible. The dials are kept in a similar layout but are surrounded by a body color aluminum dashboard rather than a flat slab of walnut. This is enveloped in the finest leather hugging the dials, now positioned slightly higher. The seating position is a vast improvement over the original, dropping the H-point significantly so that you sit in the car rather than on it and ensuring that the lowered roof doesn’t affect the headroom. The seats themselves, whilst classic in design, offer more support than the original items. The door design is also more sophisticated and sporting in design, with a slim storage pocket and a completely new door release to not only improve the ergonomics but also the knee clearance for taller drivers.
Electric windows are added, as are electronic gauges and a discreet rollcage, while air-conditioning, power steering, Bluetooth connectivity and a number of in-car entertainment options ensure that every European will offer the thrill of a classic with the convenience and everyday drivability of a modern car.
The Jaguar XK 3.8-litre straight-six engine—which produced around 160 -220 bhp in period—is thoroughly re-engineered, imbuing the ‘European’ specification with performance akin to a modern sports car. The all-alloy engine is equipped with direct injection, a bespoke camshaft and rebored cylinders for either 300hp or 340hp depending on specification.
To allow the new engine to perform more consistently at higher performance, there is an upgraded aluminum radiator with an oil cooler, as well as louvered bonnet and subtly redesigned vents and apertures. Power is delivered through a redesigned five-speed manual transmission. Each and every component has been carefully considered and thoughtfully designed for the best possible driving experience.
The handling has been enhanced with reconfigured suspension all-round, employing double wishbones at the front, coilovers, tuned Bilstein shock absorbers and Eibach springs. It’s a far more modern package than the original car, which featured basic leaf springs on the rear axle. In fact, the rear axle set-up has been completely redesigned, and now incorporates a limited-slip differential. Four-piston vented disc brakes equip each wheel.
From basket case Jaguar XK to European-specification Jaguar XK involves a process of over 5,000 hours, every stage driven by Thornley Kelham’s meticulous (and award-winning) attention to detail and applied across the entirety of the car from metalwork, paintwork (800 hours) to engineering, fine Connolly leather trimming and chassis set-up.
When customers require additional performance, they can turn to Thornley Kelham’s expert in-house engineering and engine-building team, who can imbue existing historic engines with incredible levels of performance. At the 2018 Le Mans Classic, for example, three cars—two Invicta S Types and a Lagonda—used engines prepared by Thornley Kelham engineers. One S Type produced double the output of the original engine, and the other the overall fastest nighttime speed of the race.
To qualify as a member of the ‘European’ program, a project must bring together this world-class engine-building and chassis experience with decades of top-tier Concours-standard restoration expertise and a dedication to ultimate perfection.
In short, it must fulfill three key criteria: design, details and drive.

Development of the first Jaguar XK built to ‘European’ specification is already underway, with the first commission secured. Numbers will be strictly limited, with prices from £550,000 plus donor car depending on specification.

All-new model will be Morgan’s most configurable vehicle ever with an extensive array of accessories available at launch
The Morgan Motor Company has confirmed its all-new three-wheeled model will be launched on 24 February 2022. The new car marks Morgan’s first new design language and product ethos since the launch of the Aero range, which went on sale more than two decades ago.
Most details will remain undisclosed until the global unveil on 24 February. But Morgan has confirmed the use of a Ford three-cylinder engine for the upcoming model, continuing the long-standing use of Ford powerplants in the company’s line-up.
It will also be Morgan’s most customisable vehicle to date. Several identities of the model will be shown at launch, showcasing the diverse and versatile options available. They will highlight some of the personalities that have inspired its design, from bold, individual, and eccentric colours to fit-for-purpose adventure and motorsport-inspired mid-century racers.

The original TOK 258 was designed in a dark green color, in contrast to the trendy red shade that was showcased on Morgan vehicles during that time. The Plus Four LM62 combines the use of both timeless colors. Featuring a Heritage White hardtop, this color is available as a first for the model. Continuing to reference the commemorative Morgan is an LM62 graphics pack with roundels of the number ’29,’ and an LM62 rear badge, silver wire wheels, a Le Mans-inspired fuel filler cap and an arched back panel.
The interior of the model comes embellished with an LM62 metal plaque that highlights the car’s distinctive and rare structure. Another exquisite feature of the model stages an LM62 laser-stamped black saddle-leather door pulls and headrests stitched with the same LM62 graphic. Heated black leather Comfort Plus seats come adorned with horizontal pleating, perforated seat centers and matching stitch color, finishing off with leather wrapped seat backs.

The 2022 Lexus NX model has brought us two unprecedented features: 1) the all-new Plug-In Hybrid Electric (450h+) and 2) the all-new Lexus multimedia interface.
As of late, 360 MAGAZINE was invited to Phoenix to attend the release of the all-new Lexus NX. Its appeal will foster youth, technology, and multiculturalism.
Upon arrival, the team checked into the Arizona Biltmore, a Waldorf Astoria Resort (also part of Hilton). The grounds boast lush scenery and majestic mountains as a backdrop. For nearly a century, the lodge has played a prominent role in its habitat. Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural style offers a generous splash of Hollywood glamor.
With history worth of noting, the Biltmore was opened by brothers Warren McArthur, Jr. and Charles McArthur with John McEntee Bowman on February 23, 1929. The most noticeable difference of its makeover is the signature spindle grille. While maintaining the overall skeleton of the incumbent, the mouth has become pouty and polished. Furthermore, the newly introduced L-E-X-U-S rear badging rests under the continuous tail-lamp. Say goodbye to the Toyota-like emblem on its boot. The lateral profile, at first glance, closely resembles the current model, but this is not the case. The length, width and height of the body are respectively 4660/1865/1640mm and the wheelbase is 2690 mm. In comparison with the current model, the length and width have increased by 20mm, and the wheelbase has increased by 30mm. Taking a peek inside, the redesign of the cabin will completely hypnotize you. The new NX uses the Tazuna cockpit concept to communicate more directly and efficiently between the driver and the vehicle. The standard 9.8-inch touch panel can be upgraded to 14 inches. The infotainment unit is considerably taller than the center console, and the edges and corners have an elegant diamond shape. What makes this vehicle more intuitive than its predecessors are the steering commands that are imitated on the head-up display of the windshield. Overall, this vehicle screams ergonomically for drivers and larger passengers with enough space for four to sit comfortably. In addition, Lexus offers a panoramic moonroof that allows extra light to spread through its corridors, making stargazing more accessible than ever. At night, up to 64 selected colors of ambient light can be seen in footwells, center console and door panels.
The revamped NX marks the introduction of a brand-new Lexus multimedia platform that outperforms its current system, meeting customers’ priority for fast, intuitive on-board connectivity. Operation is as simple as using a tablet, allowing drivers to stay connected to the Lexus interface on an ongoing basis. There is wireless integration of Apple Car Play and Android Auto, Voice Assistant, cloud-enabled navigation with Google Points of Interest (POI), on aerial updates and Digital Key available. Additionally, the vehicle provides integrated streaming from Apple Music and Amazon Music. And their premium audio package features a 17-speaker system equipped by Mark Levinson. Highlight: First Lexus Plug-In NX 450h+
Historically, Lexus hybrid models have captured more than 23% of their sales. The bold design and signature make the Lexus NX one of the most popular models among Gen Z and Gen Y affluent drivers. According to Koji Sato, Lexus International President and former chief engineer, electrification is already one of the most important goals for Lexus to conquer. With that, the first plug-in Lexus NX 450h+ has now been released.

The Bugatti Chiron quickly established itself as the new benchmark of the hyper sports car market. As the fastest and most powerful production vehicle in the marque’s 112-year history, the Chiron pushed the boundaries of automotive design, technology, engineering and manufacturing.
Four years since the very first of 500 bespoke units left the Atelier in Molsheim, the Chiron now enters its final production phase in Pur Sport and Super Sport form only, with less than 40 build slots left to be allocated. The final units of the Chiron and Chiron Sport are already being handcrafted, or scheduled to be built at Bugatti’s Molsheim Atelier, making way for the final encore of the Chiron era.

Throughout its lifetime, the Chiron has collected a multitude of accolades for its design and performance capabilities, solidifying its position in automotive history as one of the all-time greats. With a peak power output of 1,500 PS-a record for a series-production vehicle-1,600 newton meters and a host of surplus technological innovations, the Chiron redefined the pinnacle of automotive engineering in the 2010s. 2021 saw the unveiling of Bugatti’s latest masterpiece–the Chiron Super Sport–which alongside the Pur Sport will make up the final 40 units of Bugatti’s 500-strong Chiron production run. As the quintessence of luxury and speed, the Chiron Super Sport has been designed to embrace supreme longitudinal speed without compromising luxury and comfort.
As such, the Chiron Super Sport is regarded as the ultimate Grand Tourisme, capable of crossing continents in a heartbeat. Defined by its longtail design, the Super Sport achieves extreme levels of aerodynamic efficiency, enabling the hyper sports car to reach speeds of up to 440 km/h. With an upgraded version of the renowned Bugatti 8.0-liter W16 engine, the Super Sport outputs 1,600PS – increasing power by 100PS over the base Chiron.
Bugatti introduced the brand’s two newest hyper sports cars to customers and enthusiasts during the biggest automotive event of the year.
In true Bugatti fashion, the historic French luxury marque made headlines this past weekend at The Quail in Monterey, California, with the North American debut of not one, but two new hyper sports cars–the Chiron Super Sport and the track-focused Bolide.
To officially kick off this time-honored event, Bugatti announced the experimental Bolide will be produced as a few-off model following significant interest from customers. Only 40 of these radically light, four million euro track-oriented machines will be available for purchase, with delivery scheduled for 2024.
In addition to the Bolide, Bugatti presented the new Chiron Super Sport to the U.S. market for the first time. With deliveries scheduled to begin in early 2022, the Super Sport is the ultimate grand tourer designed for top speed, luxury and comfort. Complete with an overhauled 8.0-liter W16 engine, this hypercar produces 1,600 hp and has a net price of 3.2 million euros.
This year, Bugatti showcased a variety of vehicles, including the Chiron Sport, Super Sport, Pur Sport and Bolide at The Quail–A Motorsports Gathering, while the full Super Sport family joined these cars at ‘Le Domaine Bugatti’ at The Lodge at Pebble Beach. On display were the Veyron Super Sport, EB110 Super Sport and the Type 55 Super Sport for customers and Bugatti fans to enjoy.

It was a close race right to the finish line for the top luxury car brands in the US in 2020. For the second consecutive year, BMW clinched the top spot.
According to the research data analyzed and published by Stock Apps, the Bavarian automaker sold a total of 278,732 units during the year. Compared to its 2019 tally, that marked a 17.5% sales decline. Its best-selling model was the X3, which posted 59,941 unit sales.
The Munich-based company had a strong Q4 2020, contributing significantly to its crossing the finish line in the first place. During the three-month period, it sold a total of 98,750 cars. Thanks to this impressive rebound, BMW’s unit sales in Q4 2020 were a mere 2% lower than Q4 2019.
German rival Mercedes-Benz sold a total of 274,916 units in 2020, marking a decline of 13% year-over-year (YoY). Just like BMW, Mercedes too had SUVs in the lead, with the GLC-Class selling 52,626 units during the year.
Generally, Mercedes’ SUV lineup had a strong year in the US accounting for close to 65% of total annual sales. However, Mercedes was not the second best-selling premium brand. The honor went to the Japanese brand Toyota Lexus, which sold 275,041. There was a difference of only 125 units between the second and third best-sellers.
Compared to the two German brands, Lexus had the best year in terms of percentage decline, dropping by 7.7% only. Lexus RX was its top-selling model, posting 101,059 unit sales, almost as much as BMW and Mercedes’ best-selling models combined.
Audi took the fourth spot on the list of best-selling luxury brands in the US. With a total of 186,620 unit sales, the automaker posted a 17% YoY decline. Rounding up the top five was Cadillac with 129,495, down by 17.1% from 2019.
Volvo was in the sixth position, the only US luxury brand to post a percentage increase in sales. It sold 110,129 units, marking a 1.8% increase YoY. Lincoln sold 105,410 units (-6.1%), Infiniti 79,502 (-32.5%) and Porsche 57,294 (-7%).
Mercedes-Benz Clinches Top Spot Globally with 2.16 Million Unit Sales
On a global scale, Mercedes-Benz narrowly outpaced BMW to secure the title of the best-selling luxury vehicle brand worldwide in 2020. It was the fifth consecutive year in which Mercedes beat its archrival and topped the ranks.
Over the 12-month period, it sold a total of 2,164,187 units according to Auto Industriya. The figure marked a decline of 7.5% over 2019 when it sold 2,339,562 units.
It is worth noting that while its sales in North America and Europe sank compared to 2019, the Asia Pacific market saw a 4.7% increase. China was the major force behind the uptick as it had a sales increase of 11.7%.
The GLC was its best-selling model during the year, moving a total of 320,000 units. Mercedes reported a 12.9% increase in SUV and crossover sales during the year. For its all-new S-Class, there are more than 40,000 customers on the waiting list.
On the other hand, BMW was the world’s second best-selling luxury car brand, falling 136,000 units behind the #1. It posted a slightly lower decline in sales, -7.2% YoY, with a total of 2,028,659 units sold. Audi took a distant third spot with 1,692,773 unit sales in 2020 and a decline of 8.3% YoY.
Mercedes, BMW and Volkswagen’s Audi have had over 60% of China’s luxury car market under their control for years according to Bloomberg. But while the Chinese market drove their growth in 2020, they ceded share to Tesla and electric upstarts, Nio and Li.
Nio delivered a total of 43,728 electric vehicles (EVs) in 2020, marking an increase of 113% YoY according to Inside EEVs. These included 27,945 ES6s, 10,861 ES8s and 4,922 EC6s. The automaker launched its first EV sedan, the ET7 on January 9, 2021.
As of mid-December 2020, Li Auto announced cumulative sales of 30,000 units year-to-date (YTD). In December 2020 alone, the upstart delivered 6,126 vehicles, an increase of 530% YoY. Q4 2020 saw a total of 14,464 deliveries from the automaker.
In response to the growing threat from these brands, the aforementioned German car brands are rapidly expanding their offerings of electric vehicles. Daimler is planning to launch four purely battery-powered EV models in 2021, including the EQA compact set to launch in January. Meanwhile, BMW is planning to double its offering of pure EVs and hybrids to 25 by 2023.
In total, Mercedes sold 160,000 EVs in 2020, compared to BMWs 193,000. Audi was far behind the two with 47,000 deliveries of its e-tron SUVs.
