A Timeless Legacy

Ford Model T
An Enthusiast’s Guide
1908 to 1927 (all models and variants)

“I will build a car for the great multitude” stated Henry Ford, and so he did. The Ford Model T, or the ‘Tin Lizzie’ and the ‘Flivver’ as it was also known, transformed American society, bringing mobility through car ownership to millions of middle-class Americans at a time when the horse and the railroad were the only real viable means of transport.

Using moving assembly lines and the best possible materials, between 1 October 1908 and 26 May 1927, Ford built around 16.5 million examples of this extraordinary car. By 1918, half of all cars built in America were Model Ts and by 1925 around 8,000 a day were being produced, making Henry Ford one of the world’s best-known manufacturers of automobiles.

The selection of body styles varied from two- and four-seat open and closed models – tourers, town cars, runabouts, landaulets, and cabriolets – to vans and pick-up trucks, and customers could also have colors other than black!

This guide provides an insight into the design and construction of the Model T and many of its numerous variants, and the uses to which they were put, along with details of the background to Henry Ford himself and the car.

Highlights of the book include:

  • The Ford Model T story – the background of Henry Ford and his Ford Motor Company and the development of the Model T
  • Anatomy of a Ford Model T – detailed insight with photographs and diagrams
  • The engineer’s view – an insight from two leading experts, Chris Barker and Neil Tuckett
  • The driver’s view – description of the controls and driving technique for the Model T
  • The owner’s view – first-hand accounts from five Model T owners about why the car appeals to them
  • Competition history – including Indianapolis 500, Le Mans 24-hours and ‘Pig ‘n Ford’ races in America
  • Endless varieties – including trucks, ambulances, fire engines, army patrol cars and even rail cars
  • Restoration – Three UK-based specialists talk about their projects
  • Adventures – a trip across the North Island of New Zealand and a drive to the top of Ben Nevis in Scotland

Lamborghini Urus: Super-SUV

By: Emily Bunn x Vaughn Lowery

The marriage of a sports car’s athleticism and an SUV’s versatility is evident in the groundbreaking new creation from Lamborghini: The 2021 Lamborghini Urus. This super-SUV is the first of its kind on the market, offering an exhilarating driving experience to those behind the wheel. With the ability to host five passengers, this vehicle packs in pleasure and practicality wherever you go. The manufacturer elaborates on the invigorating experience of driving their super-SUV:

“It is the absolute all-round super sports car and more. It allows you to explore new paths and new ways to express yourself—to accept challenges confidently and to live life to the fullest. You are not afraid to go far: this is what you aspire to. Unlock any road, unlock your personality.”

The Urus rivals similar super SUV models like 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, but beats out the Trackhawk in terms of speed. Its twin turbo engine delivers 217kW per tonne, as compared to the Trackhawk, which only delivers 212kW per tonne. Further, the silhouette of the Urus resembles the electric Jaguar I-Pace, presenting a similarly aerodynamic exterior.

Other comparable models include the Audi Q8. While both vehicles have a top speed of 189.5mph (305 km/h), the Urus is able to hit top speed in 3.6 seconds, which is two tenths of a second quicker than the Audi Q8. Just like the distinguished sophistication of opera music, hearing the roar of the Lamborghini motor is music to driver’s ears.

Design

The interior of the luxe vehicle is inspired by aero-space design and driver oriented instrumentation. With a gear shift resembling a jet’s throttle and a start button hidden under a red flip cover, drivers are met with power and control immediately upon entering the driver’s seat. There are several interior cubby storage compartments, such as door pockets and a bin behind the floating center stack. With up to 22 ft3 of space in the car’s cabin  and the ability to fit 5 passengers, the Urus is spacious–especially when compared to other super cars.

Offering a choice of finishes–from leather to Alcantra, to wood and aluminum, or carbon-fiber–the Urus is sure to look good from the inside out. The manufacturer now offers more customization than ever before. Clientele can choose from a selection of vibrant, eye-catching colors, including Giallo Inti (yellow), Arancio Borealis (orange), or Verde Mantis (green) with the available Pearl Capsule package. Alternatively, the standard palette offers more subtly attractive options, including black, grey, blue, and white colorways. Any of these fashionable exteriors create a beautiful contrast with the black and carbon fiber-trim. This model doesn’t fail to uphold the signature Lamborghini design with its Y-shaped details, front hood with a center peak, and crossed lines on the rear hood. With frameless doors and hexagonal detailing, this Lamborghini epitomizes modern glamour.

Technology

Not one, not two, but three TFT LCD display screens are installed inside the Urus, transforming the interior to feel like a cockpit. The screens provide crisp graphics and are easy to view, without the need for any clunky buttons. You can use your finger on the touch screen to write in your destination, or other search requests.

The Lamborghini infotainment system is installed with a Bang and Olufsen radio sound system, smart phone interface with Apple CarPlay and Android Audio, a DVD-audio/video reader, 3D maps navigation system, USB capabilities, Bluetooth connection, and voice control recognition. Additionally, the vehicle has a fully digital gauge cluster.

If you’re looking for further refinement, the factory offers an array of optional lavish features for purchase. These features include front seats with ventilation, seats with massage functions, an upgraded sound system, the rear-seat entertainment system, and available Off-Road drive modes. A stand out is the optional hands-free tailgate feature for when you’ve got your hands full, just lift your foot to trigger the sensor beneath the rear bumper to activate the trunk and make loading or unloading your vehicle effortless.

Safety

Drivers feel secure as they transport their precious cargo in this super-SUV. With aluminum tires–21’ x 9.5’ in the front of the vehicle, and 21’ x 10.5’ in the rear–the Urus has some major brawn. At the same time, the multi-link front and rear suspension, with air springs, allows for smooth riding. The Urus is athletic without compromising safety, as evident in its quick steering and high-speed cornering modes.

The car comes standard with several key safety features such as adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology, standard blind spot monitoring, a night vision camera, available self-parking and driver assist, and an audio theft deterrent. Additionally, it is equipped with front, side, and overhead airbags to protect drivers and occupants in case of emergency.

Explore new paths in your Urus as you take on any terrain together.  Its Pirelli P Zero front and rear tires, offered in 21’ to 23’ size options, promise traction and performance. And if you want to take a pit stop along the way? The impressive braking system is equipped with carbon-ceramic brakes and front aluminum 10 piston brake calipers. These brakes, along with the premium shock absorbers, bring the car to a smooth halt from 70 mph to a full stop in 149 ft. Additionally, the car has front and rear anti-roll bars for extra braking power.

While the manufacturer doesn’t offer a lengthy warranty– providing three years with no mileage cap, without any complimentary scheduled maintenance–this car is built to last. However, if you’re looking for that extra protection, there are several extended warranty and maintenance plans available for purchase.

Performance

The Urus is powered by a powerful 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine with an output of 641hp, producing a maximum torque of 850 Nm (626,93 lb.-ft.) @ 2,2520-4,400 rpm. Feeling the need for speed? Accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, and reach a top speed of 190 mph, or 305 km/h in this sporty SUV. The 8-speed transmission is automatic with driver selectable mode, sequential shift control with steering wheel controls, and an oil cooler. Additionally, the engine has its own auto stop-start feature. The vehicle has eight cylinders, and a total displacement of 3,996 cm³.

When it comes to fuel efficiency, this Lamborghini gets 12mph in the city, or 17mph on the highway. The fuel tank has a capacity of 22.5 G. Equipped with AWD, you can drive anywhere with confidence and power.

Cost

The Urus’ MSRP totals $218,009, with a destination charge of $3,995. Compared to the rest of Lamborghini’s luxurious portfolio, this particular model is the most affordable and versatile option. Here at 360 Magazine, we took a spin in the manufacturer’s testing vehicle, which cost $282,649 with all the car’s capabilities fully loaded.

If you’re searching to cruise in style without compromising functionality, look no further than the 2021 Lamborghini Urus. Stars like Justin Bieber–who drives a custom barbie pink one, and Kanye West, who has his own custom, cream colored model–know that this super-SUV is the choice for drivers looking to stand out. Another member of the Kardashian crew, Kylie Jenner, also owns this super-SUV, which she posted about on her Instagram. Similarly, Ben Simmons of the Philadelphia 76ers flaunts his fancy super-SUV, decked out with a gloss black trim. Cardi B also just bought her husband–Offset from the rap group Migos,–one, the perfect present to transport the posh celeb duo in style. No matter where you go, every ride in the Urus promises VIP treatment to all of its passengers.

Lexus – “All In”

Sneakerhead, audiophile, fashionista, gamer … these people are “all in” on their passions. In a new marketing campaign breaking today for the Lexus 2021 IS, the automaker celebrates its own obsession: an unapologetically pure sports sedan. Entitled “All In,” the new campaign engages an audience that’s just as unapologetic about pursuing their unique interests. It features influencers and deep, diverse media partnerships.

“The IS customer is our youngest, most fiercely authentic yet,” said Lisa Materazzo, vice president of Lexus marketing. “The marketing campaign, like the new IS, is equally authentic and celebrates those who fully embrace their passions.”

Rather than casting actors, the campaign features eight micro-influencers. The first spot, “Names,” moves quickly through people from different walks of life who introduce themselves by the names they’ve earned—be it sneakerhead, gamer or audiophile.

Another spot, “Vanity Plates,” demonstrates just how far these enthusiasts will go to show off the obsessions that define them.  To ensure a connection with all consumers, unique ads were created to further explore the meaning of “all in” for Asian, Black, Hispanic and LGBTQ markets.

“Names” and “Vanity Plates” will air during primetime, special events and sports including NFL playoffs and NBA. Potential drivers and enthusiasts of Lexus will be able to ask their Google Assistant-ready devices about the new Lexus IS model to learn more about the vehicle’s latest technology, audio, performance and safety features, as well as a link to nearby dealerships. The campaign also includes video, audio, connected speakers, print, social and display.

Lexus is connecting with an audience that embraces their passions fully by providing content that celebrates those who go “all in.”

  • Epic Race. Lexus partnered with MotorTrend for an epic race between race car driver Rhys Millen and downhill skater Josh Neuman at speeds of over 70 MPH on Malibu’s legendary Deer Creek Road. The video is live now.
  •  Travel Influencer. Lexus is partnering with Courageous Studios, CNN’s brand studio, to produce a documentary-style campaign that follows Ugandan-American photographer, self-proclaimed geography nerd and travel expert Jessica Nabongo. The first black woman to visit every country in the world, Jessica’s story unfolds as she approaches her next milestone: seeing every state in the U.S. The campaign will be distributed via CNNgo in February.
  •   Fantasy Football. Last Fall, Lexus worked with Yahoo to create dynamic banners on the Yahoo Fantasy Football web site that leverage the players’ stats to serve custom ads to fans engaging in their passion.

Pirelli Elect

The Porsche Taycan is the first car to use Pirelli Elect tires.

With low rolling resistance to increase autonomy, decreased road noise, immediate grip that puts the power down for a quick getaway and a special structure to support the weight of a battery-powered vehicle, Pirelli Elect tires are changing the game.

They are developed specially with leading car manufacturers to meet specific technical requirements of and be compatible with electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

The Elect marking, which was launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 2019, is the distinguishing factor. It is available as original equipment for the most modern cars.

The new P Zero Elect was developed by Pirelli’s own engineers for the Porsche Taycan, and they capitalize on the already staggering performance.

Pirelli’s perfect fit philosophy was the baseline for the tire, and the compound, construction and tread pattern suit the Taycan to a tee.

Even with the power and low-down torque of the Taycan, the Pirelli tires give the driver autonomy, grip and reduced noise, enhancing drivability and perfecting safety.

All drivers of Taycan can now feel comfortable with tires designed with fully electric cars in mind.

Pirelli has also created Elect versions of their Winter Sottozero 3, Scorpion Winter and P Zero Winter for all of the laws mandating winter tires in many different countries. The P Zero Winter is available in 19-inch and 20-inch sizes.

Winter tires are recommended for those who put in a lot of miles in the cold or simply want the best performance in harsh conditions.

When temperatures drop below 44 degrees, summer tires are unable to perform to their maximum capabilities. Winter tires are softer, allowing them to work even when temperatures drop below zero, providing secure braking.

Bugatti Baby II

The Bugatti Owners’ Club and The Little Car Company announced a new partnership Wednesday following the release of The Little Car Company’s Bugatti Baby II.

With this partnership, the Bugatti Owners’ Club gives its stamp of approval to the Bugatti Baby II, giving it certified status and hopefully building the foundation for a long and successful relationship.

Based at the Prescott Hill Climb in the UK, the Bugatti Owners’ Club was founded in 1929 and has more than 2,000 members.  It is the oldest club for the marque in the world.

This partnership will allow members of the two organizations to connect and share their passions for cars, design and engineering. It will also offer the chance for members to get together at events at the Bugatti Owners’ Club clubhouse.

The Bugatti Baby II is a remastering of the original Bugatti Baby. It preserves the history of Bugatti while also inspiring a new generation of Bugatti fans and enthusiasts.

Gemma Price, the general manager of the Bugatti Owners’ Club said she is delighted to work with The Little Car Company.

“We are looking forward to working with The Little Car Company closely and developing a strong partnership centered around the excellence of Ettore Bugatti’s design and engineering prowess that has proven to be visionary and timeless throughout the decades,” Price said. “This has been exceptionally captured and reimagined with the Bugatti Baby II and we look forward to celebrating this common affection through the development of the association of our two organizations.”

The first Bugatti Baby was created in 1926. Ettore Bugatti and his son decided to build a half-scale version of he Type 35 for Ettore’s youngest son’s fourth birthday. It was expected to be a one-off, but it received positive feedback, so the car went into production. 500 units were made between 1927 and 1936.

The Bugatti Baby II is based on a digital 3D scan of a Lyon GP car, so the handling is authentic. The handling can be adjusted because of adjustable dampers, which you can see an example of by clicking right here.

It also has replicas of the original Type 35’s instruments but with modern practicality. The fuel pressure gauge is now a battery gauge. Also, the oil gauge has been transitioned to a power gauge, which is a nod to the Bugatti Veyron.

It is also 75% scale of the Type 35 and can go from zero to 60 kph in six seconds, depending upon the weight of the driver. It tops out at 70 kph, and only 500 will be made.

Ben Hedley, CEO of The Little Car Company, said the Bugatti Owners’ Club has been incredibly supportive in the process.

“As custodians of Ettore Bugatti’s legacy we knew their approval would always be the hardest to earn, a remarkable undertaking that we are incredibly proud to have achieved. We are honoured that with this partnership we are able to help ensure that the extraordinary craftsmanship of Ettore lives on to be enjoyed for the generations to come,” Hedley said.

ROLLS-ROYCE EXPLORES A VERY UNIQUE MUSE: A ROLLS-ROYCE ROSE

This year more than ever, as we have been confined to our homes while the natural world flourishes around us, we are reminded of the wonders of nature. Spring is a time of hope and optimism, when bird song crescendos and flowers greet us with heady scent and vibrant colour. As we approach the first ever online RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Rolls-Royce looks a little closer to home and reflects on a Bespoke and storied rose, preparing for an abundant bloom.

In the courtyard of the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, West Sussex, a rare flower — the Phantom Rose — is cultivated. Bred solely for the marque as a source of inspiration, Rolls-Royce’s Global Centre of Luxury Manufacturing Excellence is the only place in the world where this rose can be found.

British Rose breeder Philip Harkness, of the award winning Harkness Roses, bred the Phantom Rose especially for the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective. His family has been breeding roses since 1879, establishing a tradition of beautiful blooms associated with the Harkness name. Today, plants and flowers bred by Harkness Roses remain a constant favourite on the international horticultural scene, winning gold at the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show more than 25 times in the last 50 years.

On commissioning the rose, Rolls-Royce Bespoke Designer Sina-Maria Eggl, commented, “The rose had to embody Rolls-Royce’s poise, elegance and allure. The result was a very pure, delicate but voluminous white flower: sensual, but strong in presence, with an alluring aroma and extra winter durability.”

The Phantom Rose grows in a specially designed bed, fringed with lavender, running alongside the reflection ponds adjacent to the marque’s award winning Sir Nicholas Grimshaw plant. Indeed, it is no coincidence that both Rolls-Royce associates and the marque’s Bespoke Designers can view the rose bed through the plant’s floor-to-ceiling glass as they work.

The Phantom Rose is a blousy, creamy-white flower, offering a full bloom of 50 petals and a rich perfume. Harkness describes it as a quintessentially English rose, which took eight years to develop. It was, he says, a labour of love. “A rose has the ability to captivate you on many levels. It is a thing of beauty, it can stimulate the senses with wonderful perfume, the soft touch of the petals or the rasping pain from a thorn. It touches our emotions, signifies love and appears in some of our finest poetry. How can a simple flower live up to this expectation? The rose that Rolls-Royce has commissioned makes easy work of the task. Observe the glory of the bloom. There can be few more enjoyable experiences, thanks to the unending generosity and diversity of nature captured in one single rose.”

In 2017, an iteration of the rose debuted in a one-off design for Phantom’s Gallery. The Gallery is protected by an uninterrupted piece of glass that spans the width of the marque’s flagship, behind which a recess presents an up-lit stage, becoming an area for patrons to embrace the unique storytelling characteristic of the marque.

Stems of the rose were flown to awaiting master artisans from world-renowned porcelain manufacturer Nymphenburg, Bavaria, Southern Germany. Here, the rose was examined in its varying stages, from bud to full bloom, before being crafted by hand for the Gallery in the finest black and white porcelain ever created by the company. The development process alone lasted three months in order to achieve the same level of delicacy as the Phantom Rose itself.

More recently, the Phantom Rose acted as a primary point of inspiration for Rolls-Royce Bespoke Designer Ieuan Hatherall. It was here that an extraordinary Bespoke commission began, consisting of over one million stitches, for a Swedish entrepreneur with a passion for flowers. The Phantom Rose is illustrated in varying stages of maturity in the finest embroidery throughout the interior of a highly unique, one-of-a-kind Phantom.

Ieuan Hatherall commented, “There is a transcendent beauty when a rose garden is in full bloom. The commissioning patron wanted to create that same feeling of awe; an abundance of flowers to lift the spirit and celebrate nature’s decadent beauty.”

Ahead of the first ever online RHS Chelsea Flower Show, 18-23 May, Rolls-Royce releases an extended interview with the commissioning patron of The Rolls-Royce Rose Phantom. Click here to view the extended film.

World Heavyweight Champion Anthony Joshua Gets Fight-Ready With Bespoke Range Rover SVAutobiography

Bespoke luxury SUV will chauffeur the heavyweight world champion to his next fight, against Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev in London on 20 June

Land Rover has created a one-off Range Rover SVAutobiography for world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua OBE. The bespoke luxury SUV made its world premiere outside the Finchley Boxing Club in Barnet, north London, where Joshua started his journey to the world heavyweight title, and will transport the reigning champion to his next title defence this summer.

Custom details help to identify the famous owner of the one-off SVAutobiography, these include a commissioning plaque on the centre console bearing the AJBXNG graphic, Joshua’s signature embroidered on the headrests of all four seats inside and personalised illuminated treadplates. The aluminium trim finisher on the dashboard has also been engraved with Joshua’s name while the interior door handles have been etched with a unique boxing glove motif.

Joshua has just confirmed details of his next fight, against Bulgarian challenger Kubrat Pulev at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London on 20 June. His specially commissioned Range Rover SVAutobiography long wheelbase will make his ride to the fight as comfortable as possible.

Anthony Joshua said:
The countdown to my next fight has begun and this custom Range Rover will play its part in the build-up. With family and media commitments here in London and my training base in Sheffield, I spend lots of time on the road. The SVAutobiography will take the stress out of long trips, allowing me to relax in complete comfort, and its unique design features both my family crest and references to my boxing success and I have to thank the team at Land Rover Vehicle Personalisation for taking my ideas and making them real.

The unique model features distinctive Bespoke Black paintwork with a matching roof and door mirrors while a Graphite Atlas front grille, side vent graphics and door handles maintain the stealthy appearance. Purposeful 22-inch split-spoke alloy wheels with a Diamond Turned Finish and contrasting Red brake callipers complete the exterior, with the Union Flag badges on the front fender vents bearing the number 258 – a subtle reference to Joshua’s management company.

Power comes from a 565PS V8 Supercharged engine for smooth power delivery and peerless refinement. Joshua can control the latest Touch Pro Duo infotainment using either the central front touchscreens or, when travelling in the rear, from the 10-inch Rear Entertainment Screens mounted in the front headrests.

All Range Rover SVAutobiography models are hand-finished at the Special Vehicle Operations Technical Centre in Coventry and the vehicle personalisation team helps customers to specify their own unique commission, working with a Land Rover designer.

Performance-Built. Utility-Focused. Comfort-Driven.

Suspension and Handling:

The Fisker Ocean utilizes a multi-link rear axle to simultaneously optimize both ride and handling. Unlike more simple suspension systems that sacrifice ride quality to achieve sportscar-like steering performance, the Fisker Ocean strikes a supreme balance with innovative engineering touches. The multi-link system further delivers a new level of space efficiency and class-leading interior trunk volume. In addition, the entire rear suspension is mounted on an isolated subframe – removing cabin noise and vibration. The result: superb interior comfort and refinement.

Active Aerodynamics and Cooling:

Unlike many electric vehicles, the Fisker Ocean leverages an advanced system where the amount of air directed to the cooling radiator is computer-regulated – resulting in maximized aerodynamic efficiency at any given point in time. The vehicle’s battery also operates at the optimal temperature within the most aerodynamic body, producing the highest range possible from a single charge while ensuring that the battery life is maximized. Reflecting Fisker’s confidence in the effectiveness of the system, the company is ensuring that battery life is covered as part of the FLEXEE ownership experience. · The lower front of the Ocean is designed to showcase these strikingly efficient features with a large parametric pattern that opens up toward the lower front spoiler of the vehicle.

World-Class Crash Performance:

The Fisker Ocean features a unique, industry-leading structure that protects the battery pack in the event of a side impact. Extra reinforcements have also been added to the body structure to protect passengers and the overall vehicle in the event of an impact. Intelligent materials create an SUV with the lowest possible weight, while guaranteeing the highest levels of safety and the maximum possible range. U.S. Cities x Speeding Problems

U.S. Cities with the Worst Speeding Problem + Fatality Rates

Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that despite the risks, approximately 70 percent of American drivers report speeding at least some of the time. Each year, speeding kills about 10,000 people and is responsible for nearly 30 percent of all motor vehicle deaths in the U.S.

Fortunately, since 2005, the speeding-related fatal accident rate has decreased nationwide by about 34 percent, from 4.2 to 2.7 per 100,000 people in 2017. While speeding-related deaths among adult drivers declined slightly during that time, those among teenagers fell dramatically.

Between 2005 and 2017, the number of speeding-related fatalities per 100,000 teenagers dropped from 13.2 to 5.8—results that experts partially attribute to increased seatbelt use and decreased drinking and driving.

The CDC Reports that since 2005, the proportion of teens who reported not wearing a seatbelt was cut in half. Similarly, the share of teens who reported riding with a drunk driver fell by 42 percent.

Despite improvements to the speeding fatality rate at the national level, there is significant regional variation. To determine which cities suffer the most from speeding-related fatalities, our researchers at Compare Auto Insurance analyzed data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System for the period 2013-2017.

They found that speeding tends to account for a higher percentage of traffic fatalities in the Southeast and Midwest. Additionally, four of the worst 15 cities for speeding are located in California. These are the cities where speeding problems are the worst.

Methodology & Detailed Findings
Fatality statistics were obtained from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System for the period 2013-2017. City and state population statistics were obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey.

The following definitions were used in categorizing accidents by location in order to simplify interpretations:

-Freeway = Interstate + Non-Interstate Freeway + Expressway
-Major highway = Non-Interstate Other Principal Arterial
-Minor highway = Non-Interstate Minor Arterial
-Primary street = Collector + Local

Fatalities per 100k residents were calculated as the sum of fatalities for 2013-2017 divided by the sum of the populations for the same years, multiplied by 100,000. Only cities with at least 200,000 residents and more than one speeding-related fatality were included in the analysis.

Cities were ranked according to the percentage of all motor vehicle fatalities that had at least one vehicle speeding prior to the accident. In the event of a tie, cities with higher speeding-related fatality rates were ranked higher.

Location is not the only factor that influences the likelihood of fatal crashes due to speeding.

The rate of speeding-related fatalities also differs by demographics. About 75 percent of drivers involved in speeding-related fatal accidents are male, regardless of age. According to the IIHS, men usually drive more miles than women and are also more likely to engage in other risky driving behaviors such as not using seatbelts and driving under the influence of alcohol, which all contribute to higher fatality rates.

While speeding-related fatality rates vary across cities, rural roads, in general, have significantly higher rates of fatalities caused by speeding when compared to urban roads. Even though rural roads only account for about 30 percent of miles traveled in the U.S., they represent about 50 percent of speeding-related fatalities.

Historically, rural roads have had higher posted speed limits, which correlate to higher rates of speeding and higher fatality rates. Compared to urban roads, rural roads also have a higher incidence of rollover crashes, which can be caused by speeding. Furthermore, rural drivers might have less access to prompt medical attention after an accident, which increases the likelihood of death after injury.

Speed kills, but the recent decreases in speeding-related fatalities are promising. To equip law enforcement with the tools they need to reduce speeding on the road, the NHTSA works with local jurisdictions around the country to provide training in enforcing traffic laws.

Some of the methods that law enforcement officers use to detect speeding include radar, laser devices, VASCAR, and speed cameras.

Additionally, certain cities like Boston have experimented with lowering speed limits to reduce speed-related accidents.

Furthermore, some automakers have installed intelligent speed assistance (ISA) systems within cars to help drivers better monitor their own speed, and some auto insurance companies offer discounts for drivers who slow down. Tackling the speeding problem will require continued efforts from individuals, industry, law enforcement, and legislators.
