2023 Toyota 4Runner 40th Anniversary inside 360 MAGAZINE

2023 TOYOTA 4RUNNER

Forty candles. The “big four-0.” The Toyota 4Runner will reach the 40-year mark with the 2023 model year… and, to celebrate, Toyota is offering a distinctive 2023 4Runner 40th Anniversary Special Edition. Appropriately, Toyota will make 4,040 of these special editions available for the U.S. market. Over the past four decades, 4Runner has amassed more than 4 million cumulative sales while carving out its place as the ready-for-anything SUV that’s equally at home on pavement or trail.

The 2023 Toyota 4Runner 40th Anniversary Special Edition is based on the SR5 Premium grade and will be available in three colors: White, Midnight Black Metallic and Barcelona Red Metallic. It will stand out from the lineup thanks to bronze-colored 17-inch alloy wheels, a body-color-matching TOYOTA heritage grille and a bronze-colored 40th Anniversary exterior tailgate badge.

The biggest eye-catcher, though, is likely to be the heritage graphics package created especially for this anniversary model. The first 4Runner was built on the Toyota pickup platform, which itself founded the heritage of Toyota’s illustrious success in off-road racing. As an homage to those early racers, the 4Runner 40th Anniversary Edition will be wearing some very cool, retro-inspired yellow/orange/red body graphics.

The anniversary theme continues inside, where the 4Runner 40th Anniversary Special Edition gets exclusive badging on the center console and features a bronze-colored cross-stitch shift knob, bronze-colored seat stitching, 40th Anniversary floormats and a 40th Anniversary logo on the Black SofTex-trimmed seats. Topping it off is a standard power moonroof.

Fun facts: When the first 4Runner arrived, “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi” was the top-grossing movie in America, and “Every Breath You Take” by The Police had ended the year at #1 on the Billboard 100. (Yep, that was then “Jedi” was the third Star Wars movie, not “Episode Six.”)

A 4Runner for All Seasons and Reasons

The 2023 4Runner lineup covers a broad range of tastes and needs in a high-capability SUV. The line includes grades SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited and TRD Pro. The 4Runner exudes a rugged look in all grades yet maintains a timeless SUV style all its own. The SR5 and TRD models ride on 17-inch alloy wheels that are available in three designs: 6-spoke for SR5 models, 7-spoke for TRD Off-Road models and flow-form matte black alloy wheels for TRD Pro.

The TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium grades are distinguished by color-keyed bumpers and overfenders, hood scoop and silver-colored painted front and rear bumper accents. “TRD Off-Road” badges adorn the C-pillars. The Limited is the only 4Runner with a chrome-plated grille insert and chrome-finished exterior trim. All 4Runner models have LED fog lights as standard equipment, with the TRD Pro featuring Rigid Industries LED fog lights.

The Ready-for-Adventure SUV

The 4Runner’s inherent strength starts with its tough-as-nails, body-on-frame construction featuring a four-link rear axle and coil-spring suspension. The robust chassis is also the foundation of 4Runner’s comfortable ride quality.

A 270-horsepower DOHC 4.0-liter V6 engine with 278 lb.-ft. of peak torque gives 4Runner plenty of get-up-and-go. The engine’s Dual Independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) helps optimize torque across the engine’s operating range, enhancing responsiveness in a variety of driving conditions.

The five-speed ECT-I automatic transmission features a sequential shift mode for manually shifting when desired. All 4Runner grades are standard-equipped with an integrated tow-hitch receiver and wiring harness, and all models can tow a maximum of 5,000 pounds.

The 2WD 4Runners provide an ample 9.0 inches of ground clearance, while 4WD models offer an even more generous 9.6 inches. All 4Runner 2WD models feature standard Automatic Limited Slip Differential (Auto LSD), a function of the traction control (TRAC) that allows some wheel slippage to help the vehicle dig out from sand or snow, for example.

4×2 and Two Kinds of 4×4

The available part-time 4WD system uses Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) and bolsters off-road capability with a two-speed transfer case with selectable low-range. By distributing drive force to any one wheel in contact with the ground, A-TRAC can help maintain traction when it senses wheel slippage occurring on terrain irregularities and slippery patches.

Exclusive to the 4Runner Limited, a full-time 4WD system uses a Torsen center differential with locking feature and a three-mode, center console-mounted switch. The system employs a 40:60 torque split in most driving situations and alters that in response to slippage. In addition, if the front wheels are slipping while the vehicle is turning, the Torsen® differential changes the torque split to 30:70. If the rear wheels slip while the vehicle is turning, the split changes to 53:47.

Maximum Traction Tech

The Toyota 4Runner offers a variety of tools to suit different off-road missions. An array of technologies enhances the capability provided by the 4Runner’s high-strength chassis and available 4WD. Standard Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC) provides additional control when accelerating from a stop on a steep incline. The system helps to briefly hold the vehicle stationary while the driver transitions from the brake pedal to the accelerator.

Limited and SR5 models equipped with 4WD also feature standard Downhill Assist Control (DAC). This feature augments low-speed descending controllability by helping to maintain a constant slow speed and preventing wheel lockup, therefore allowing the driver to concentrate primarily on steering.

The 4Runner TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro models add the capability of an electronic-locking rear differential and Toyota’s Crawl Control (CRAWL) feature. With the transfer case shifted into low range, CRAWL is designed to regulate engine speed and braking force to slowly move the vehicle forward or in reverse at one of the five driver-selectable, low-speed settings. This function allows the driver to focus on steering without having to also modulate the throttle or brake pedal in challenging terrain.

As trail conditions change, the driver can adapt the vehicle using the standard Multi-Terrain Select system using a dial (located overhead along with CRAWL settings) to choose a mode that matches prevailing surface conditions. The system will then adjust wheel slip control accordingly.

Both 4Runner TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro feature the Multi-Terrain Monitor on the list of off-road tech features. Using strategically placed cameras, the system lets the driver check surroundings on the trail, with the ability to spot potential obstacles not easily seen from the cabin. The TRD (and Limited) models also add a premium Multi-information Display.

Road-Hugging TRD Sport

The 4Runner TRD Sport grade, which first joined the line for 2022, focuses less on the trail and more on road focused features while adding style and flair. For an emphasis on everyday comfort and road dynamics, the 4Runner TRD Sport employs the Cross-Linked Relative Absorber System (X-REAS) suspension to enhance onroad handling. The X-REAS system adjusts the damping force of shock absorbers when driving over bumpy surfaces or when cornering. A center control absorber cross-links the shock absorbers on opposite corners of the vehicle, like an “X,” to help reduce pitch and yaw by offsetting opposing inputs.

The 4Runner TRD Sport is available with either 2WD or part-time 4WD with a 2-speed transfer case. Based on the SR5 grade, the 4Runner TRD Sport swaps the SR5’s 17-inch wheels for machine-faced 20-inch wheels with Dark Gray accents. Notably, all 4Runners come equipped with a full-sized spare tire, regardless of wheel size.

The TRD Sport gets its own look with color-keyed accents on the grille, rocker panels and body molding, plus the signature TRD-style hood scoop and a front spoiler and black roof rails. Inside, TRD Sport replaces the SR5 grade’s cloth seat surfaces with power-adjustable black SofTex-trimmed seats. The seats feature unique graycolored contrast stitching, and the front headrests have gray-colored TRD stitched logos. TRD Sport floor mats are included, and a standard TRD shift knob completes the cabin makeover.

TRD Pro Earns Its Name

The TRD Pro badge on any Toyota truck or SUV signifies the most off-road-capable vehicle in its respective Toyota lineup. The 2023 4Runner TRD Pro is also a bold looker, offering Solar Octane, White, Magnetic Gray Metallic and Black color options. Leading the way for off-road upgrades are some of the features not as easily seen, because tucked away at each corner are specially tuned Fox internal bypass shocks and TRD-tuned coil springs yield an inch of front lift for improved trail-tackling capability. The rear Fox shocks feature piggyback style remote reservoirs to maintain damping performance over demanding off-road terrain. Delivering the best of both worlds, the shock tuning improves trail driving isolation and high-speed performance without compromising on-road comfort and steering response.

Like other Toyota TRD Pro vehicles, the 4Runner TRD Pro features a 1/4-inch-thick aluminum front skid plate with red TRD lettering. The TRD roof rack is exclusive to 4Runner. Black TRD alloy flow-form wheels come standard on TRD Pro and are fitted with Nitto Terra Grappler tires.

A standard TRD-branded cat-back exhaust gives this trail star a powerful-sounding growl for the V6 engine. Inside, the TRD Pro features upgraded HVAC controls like those found in the Limited grade, plus a standard moonroof and Premium Audio with JBL speakers and Clari-Fi™ technology for enhancing digital music formats.

For 2023, TRD Pro will offered in the exclusive exterior color of Solar Octane, which is available alongside staples Black, White and Magnetic Gray Metallic.

On and Off-Road Suspension

For even greater off-road prowess, the TRD Off-Road grade can be equipped with Toyota’s optional Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS), which allows extended wheel travel at slow speeds for greater off-road capability and control. The KDSS system hydraulically adjusts the lean resistance provided by the stabilizer bars. Sway resistance is reduced for off-road driving to help minimize any tendency for wheel lift. On pavement, KDSS enables the bars to work conventionally, reducing body lean to enhance agility and control.

The 4Runner Limited, while certainly off-road capable, emphasizes everyday comfort and pavement handling with the X-REAS suspension system also shared with the TRD Sport.

Adventure Expert With Emphasis on Safety

With room for up to seven, the fifth-generation 4Runner offers room for the whole family. All 2023 4Runner models come standard with Toyota Safety Sense-P, an advanced suite of driver-assist technologies that includes Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Sway Warning System, Automatic High Beams and High-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.

Blind Spot Monitor + Rear Cross Traffic Alert is standard on SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro and Limited (and part of an available package on TRD Sport). All models have standard LED high beams, in addition to the LED low beams and fog lights on most grades.

Along with TSS-P, all 2023 4Runner models also come equipped with Toyota’s Star Safety System that includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with traction control (TRAC, or A-TRAC with 4WD) and Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA) and the Smart Stop Technology (SST) brake-override system.

Eight standard airbags include driver and front passenger Advanced Airbag System; front seat-mounted side airbags; driver and front passenger knee airbags; and all-row, roll-sensing side curtain airbags. All 2023 4Runner models add Rear Occupancy Alert. When operational parameters are met, the system does what its name suggests, it reminds the driver to check the rear seat for a child or pet before exiting the vehicle.

Space for People and Gear

For carrying gear, 4Runner offers multiple options. With the second-row seats in use, the cargo area offers up to 47.2 cu. ft. of carrying space. If it’s just two people hitting the road or trail, folding the second row opens a cavernous 89.7 cu.-ft. cargo area. The second-row seats fold flat without having to remove the headrests.

The 4Runner SR5 and Limited grades offer available third-row seating, with a split 50:50 seat that folds flat. When so equipped, the 40:20:40 second-row seat has a one-touch walk-in function to provide easy access to the third row. The seats can be folded from the side or at the rear, using separate one-touch levers. The second-row seats, which include a center armrest, individually recline up to 16 degrees in four steps.

For power on the go, the 4Runner has a standard 120V outlet and two 12V outlets. The available pull-out cargo deck can support up to 440 pounds to make loading and unloading heavy items easier. It also provides seating for tailgating and campsite relaxation.

Toyota Value from Bumper to Bumper

All 4Runner grades are equipped with Smart Key with Push Button Start. The SR5 Premium and TRD Off Road Premium add a significant comfort upgrade with SofTex®-trimmed seats, heated front seats and an auto dimming rearview mirror.

The 4Runner Limited delivers a luxury experience with leather-trimmed, heated and ventilated 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat (with memory) and 4-way power adjustable front passenger seat, along with dual-zone automatic climate control. Limited grade’s standard front and rear clearance sonar system helps make parking maneuvers easier and safer. The Limited’s Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) provides a 360-degree bird’s-eye view to help the driver see objects around the 4vehicle.

The Premium Audio system in the 4Runner Limited and TRD Pro adds 15 JBL speakers including a subwoofer and amplifier, Dynamic Navigation with 3-year trial, Dynamic POI Search, Dynamic Voice Recognition, Destination Assist with 1-year trial, Remote Connect with 1-year trial and Wi-Fi Connect with up to 2 GB within 3-month trial.

Limited Warranty and Toyota Care

Toyota’s 36-month/36,000-mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties cover the powertrain for 60,000 miles and corrosion with no mileage limitation. The 2023 4Runner also comes with Toyota Care, a plan covering normal factory scheduled maintenance for 2 years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first, and 24-hour roadside assistance for two years, unlimited mileage.

GR COROLLA UNVEILED

Toyota newly announced the release of their showstopping 2023 GR Corolla, a hot hatch model perfect for drivers in search of a stylish yet high-performance vehicle. 360 Magazine had the opportunity to attend the official vehicle reveal in Long Beach, California to soak up the opulence of the new style.

360, too, sat down with Thomas Sondej and Paul Hogard from Toyota to chat about what went into the planning and design process for such an elevated model on 360’s very own podcast, 360 MAG: A No-Nonsense Conversation.

The reveal of the brand new 2023 GR Corolla launched on March 31, where 360 was invited to attend the Toyota Performance Vehicle Reveal and Dinner. On-site, prototypes of the two grades of the GR Corolla were shown off and tested to reveal a few of the vehicle’s capabilities.

Beautifully designed, the space emulated the rich supersonic red and sleek silver aspects showcased in the new Toyota styles. Lights sparkled over the GR Corolla as it drifted and drove for the audience to awe in the model’s glory.

During 360 MAG: A No-Nonsense Conversation, 360’s President Vaughn Lowery and Creative Director Armon Hayes conversed on-site at Thunder Studios located in Long Beach with Sondej and Hogard to discuss all things Toyota GR Corolla.

Sondej works in the product education/marketing department, while Hogard specializes in product PR for Toyota. Lowery and Hayes learned that this specific, advanced hot hatch model has been in the works for quite some time, dating all the way back to 2018.

The 2023 GR Corolla was designed to appeal to a well-versed demographic. Allowing for a heightened driving experience with customizable design features, the GR Corolla appeals to several ages and aesthetic points of views. The high-performance aspects of the vehicle were constructed with a specific person in mind, though: adrenaline junkies. If you enjoy partaking in heart pumping activities like skateboarding or sky diving in your free time, the GR Corolla was crafted with the thrill seekers in mind.

Equipped with manual transmission, the hot hatch is built with a 1.6 L turbo engine that generates a whopping 300 horsepower. The GR force system of the GR Corolla allows for a selection of three settings of torque. You can switch from 60/40 for everyday driving, to 30/70 while traveling down windy roads, or to the 50/50 track utilized for needed stability when moving through snow/gravel.

A well-versed model, the GR Corolla allows for differing customizability’s to match your desired aesthetic. Between the two grades of core and circuit, there is a selection of colors to choose from ranging from red, white, black and silver. With impeccable styling showcased through the eye-catching exterior, the GR Corolla reminds us of top high-performance vehicles across the globe, guaranteed to match your vibes.

Some of the most noteworthy and unique elements of the hot hatch stem from its interior. Inside, the GR Corolla sports a Toyota multi-media system that is entirely touch screen while allowing for great device connectivity. The system allows utilization of your favorite methods like Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa, but you’ll be stunned with your very own “Ask Toyota” functionality. You can easily ask your Toyota a question by stating, “Hey Toyota,” and the car will be there to assist.

The climate of the inside of the car can, too, be controlled through the touch screen or “Ask Toyota” feature. Showing off a fully digital interior system, the speedometer display is also digitized, and shifts design format depending on the selected drive mode. That’s right, as you switch from sport, normal and eco functions, the color/design of the digital dashboard changes also.

Crafted out of the Toyota GR Factory in Japan, the GR Corolla was created with a hand-built approach to ensure the finest quality for consumers. It’s official, the powerful, stylish, and agile hot hatch U.S. drivers are looking for is on its way, the first-ever 2023 GR Corolla. With the detail-obsessed TOYOTA GAZOO Racing team at the helm, and master driver Akio Toyoda, a.k.a. Morizo, signing off on approval, this all new addition to Toyota’s growing lineup of sports cars brings the performance, handling, and functionality that hot hatch fans love.

Powered by the lightweight, compact-yet-powerful G16E-GTS turbo charged, direct/port injected three-cylinder engine, GR Corolla delivers 300 hp and 273 lb.- ft. of torque. Engineered for snappy acceleration out of the corners, output hits peak torque at 3000-5500 rpm, with max horsepower coming at 6500 rpm. It’s thrill inducing power is piped through a unique triple exhaust that’s designed to reduce back-pressure for maximum power delivery.

The G16-E engine is paired with Toyota’s rally developed GR-Four All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) drivetrain. This system gives drivers a choice of 60-40, 50-50, or 30-70 power distribution to the front and rear wheels. GR Corolla will be offered exclusively in a manual transmission, staying true to its hands-on rally racing roots.

Its broad hatch profile and low center of gravity are built on Toyota’s GA-C platform, with enhanced frame reinforcements developed specifically for GR Corolla at GR Factory at Toyota Motomachi plant. Functional exterior air vents and aerodynamic features further support steering stability.

GR Corolla will come in two grades, Core and Circuit Edition.

The Core Grade will be available later this year in white, black, and Supersonic Red. It will have a color keyed roof with rear lip spoiler, GR-Four stamped side rockers, and wide-fender flares. On the inside, seating for five will come with GR logoed fabric sport seats.

The Circuit Edition will be a limited-run model available in 2023. Standard colors are white, Supersonic Red and Heavy Metal with the same GR-Four stamped side rockers and wide fenders as the Core. It adds a forged carbon fiber roof, vented bulge hood, and a sporty rear spoiler, Brin Naub® suede-trimmed sport seats with red accents, and a launch-year-exclusive Morizo signed shift knob.

Both grades will come equipped with an all new Toyota Multi-Media System with touchscreen. Toyota’s Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0) system will also come standard.

Pricing will be announced later this year.

Race Inspired Engineering

In 2007, Akio Toyoda wanted to expand the company’s use of racing in its car development activities. As a starting point, he chose to compete in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, the grueling endurance race held on the famous track winding through the German forest. It was an unofficial Toyota activity at the time, so the team was called GAZOO Racing and was made up of employees, including Akio Toyoda driving under the alias of Morizo.

With a limited budget, the newly-named team entered the race with two secondhand Altezzas. Despite adversity, both cars finished the challenging race, and a new era of Toyota motorsports and product development, one founded on a spirit of challenge aimed at instigating change, began.

As TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s first wholly developed and manufactured model for the North American market, the GR Corolla carries this spirit forward.

With professional drivers, experts, and Morizo at the wheel, GR Corolla was tested repeatedly at some of Japan’s leading circuits, including Fuji Speedway, Suzuka and Tsukuba Circuit. In addition, the GR team carried out heavy duty dirt and snow driving with a Japanese Rally Championship driver. No road was left unturned in the process, so engineers and technicians could sharpen acceleration and control worthy of the GR name.

GR Factory

To help meet the performance goals for the GR Corolla, Toyota has established a dedicated GR Factory at its production facility in Motomachi, Japan. It’s the birthplace of legends such as the Lexus LFA and Supra A80 and is now home to the first GR production line, where GR Corolla and GR Yaris are precision built.

Instead of the traditional conveyor system, the body and assembly lines comprise several different cells connected by automatic guided vehicles (AGVs) rather than the conveyors featured in conventional car plants. This fully flexible method of working, with many manual assembly techniques, enables precise body and suspension alignment, with variations in vehicle dimensions and weight kept to a minimum.

Being built by experts means that the assembly of each GR Corolla takes longer than a conventional mass-produced car. The production line has been streamlined for performance, with elements such as body alignment and weld checks to ensure that each GR Corolla is built with meticulous care and attention.

Toyota Gazoo Racing has brought together highly skilled technicians from throughout the company to work on the GR Corolla. This team not only assembles every GR Corolla but also contributes to the technical skills of workers at other Toyota facilities. It’s a team structure that’s part of the overall GR mission at Toyota, developing people, driving fans, and making ever better cars.

The GR-FOUR System

With all TOYOTA GAZOO Racing sports cars firmly rooted in motorsports, it only makes sense that the GR Corolla’s drivetrain was born from the rigors of rally racing.

At the heart of the new GR Corolla is the GR-FOUR All-Wheel-Drive system, Toyota’s first sports all-wheel-drive system in over 20 years. Developed in collaboration with the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team and honed by WRC drivers, it delivers exceptional levels of traction and control with engineering designed to optimize drive power to each wheel, while also being simple and lightweight.

Made for rally, the GR-Four system is designed for a variety of conditions. Whether the driver is looking to adjust performance for dirt, rain, or snow, or just in the mood for a different feel, the GR-Four system offers settings to match.

With the twist of a dial, GR Corolla can adjust four-wheel drive performance to fit the driver’s needs. For every-day situations, drivers can set a front/rear torque distribution of 60:40; for a more sport setting, balance can shift to the rear, with 30:70 distribution for a fun-to-drive quality on winding roads and circuits; and for maximum stability a 50:50 setting can be used for fast, competitive track driving on  circuits or special stages. In each mode, the torque balance will automatically adjust in response to the driver’s inputs, vehicle behavior, and road or track conditions.

The GR Corolla Circuit Edition is also equipped with front and rear Torsen LimitedSlip Differentials (LSD)  hich offer enhanced cornering performance and grip with control of left and right-hand drive torque distribution on the front and rear axles. Front and rear LSD is available as part of the Performance Package on the Core grade, with AWD open differentials standard.

Revolutionary 3-Cylinder Turbo Engine

For GR Corolla, we took the same turbocharged G16E-GTS powerplant used in the GR Yaris and boosted its output. This compact-yet-powerful three-cylinder engine has increased power for GR Corolla thanks to improved engine exhaust efficiency thanks to a 3-piece muffler with valve capped off with brushed stainless steel tips. This design reduces exhaust pressure and outside noise, which are essential to backpressure performance.

The G16E also benefits from motorsport technologies that maximize performance, including multi-oil jet piston cooling, large-diameter exhaust valves and a partmachined intake port. Displacing 1,618 cubic centimeters, it produces a maximum power of 300 hp and 273 pound-feet of torque.

Compact and lightweight, the DOHC 12-valve engine features a single-scroll ballbearing turbo that’s matched to a 6-speed intelligent manual transmission (iMT) with rev-matching engineered to accommodate high torque levels. The turbocharger is integrated in the exhaust manifold, reducing weight, while control of wastegate bypass gases is used to improve the catalyst’s warm-up efficiency. Combustion is fed by Toyota’s D-4S direct and port fuel injection system, which operates at high pressure for maximum fuel dispersion and efficiency.

Wide, Rigid, and Designed to Handle

To achieve control worthy of the GR badge, a highly rigid body was specially constructed for GR Corolla. Based off the GA-C platform, it produced handling performance that rewards the driver. Enhanced rigidity comes from significantly more weld points in the frame, particularly to strengthen joints. Further gains are made through extensive use of structural adhesive, increasing the joint rigidity between component parts.

The front suspension is a MacPherson-type strut design that offers both light weight and firm handling, maximizing the tires’ grip potential. Made up of circuittuned coil springs, shock absorbers, and stabilizer bars, the front suspension is designed to deliver all the engine’s power to the road and provide optimum cornering capability on all surfaces. The rear suspension uses a double-wishbone type multilink system that accommodates the AWD system’s goal of maximum agility and stability.

Wide tread tires ensure high cornering performance while maintaining the excellent high speed stability of the GR Corolla’s 103.9-inch long wheelbase. It wears Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires 235/40R18 on the both grades and comes equipped with 18-in. gloss-black 15-spoke cast alloy wheels on the grades.

Braking power comes from opposed, fixed-caliper disc brakes with 14 x 1.1-inch ventilated and slotted rotors outfitted with 4-piston aluminum calipers on both grades, the Circuit Edition caliper is red painted with GR logo. At the rear, 11.7-in. x 0.7-in. ventilated rotors with 2-piston aluminum fixed-caliper disc brakes with redpainted calipers and GR logo are standard on the Circuit Edition.

Lightweight and Aerodynamic

Throughout the GR Corolla there has been a focus on saving weight to maximize the performance potential, without compromising strength and safety. This rigorous approach is particularly evident in the car’s construction, with extensive use of lightweight metals and materials used in key areas.

On the Circuit Edition, the roof is made of a forged (rather than woven) carbon sheet molding compound. This lightweight, highly rigid material keeps off the ounces that steel roof would bring and helps lower the car’s center of gravity. Aluminum is used for the hood and front door panels, with light and strong hightensile steel in critical areas to ensure the car’s structure can safely absorb and dissipate impact forces.

For the best possible aerodynamic performance, GR Corolla’s nose ascends to a tapering roof line. Wind flow is directed onto the rear spoiler to generate extra downforce. As with rally cars, the shaping of the front and rear canards and GRFour stamped lower rockers efficiently channel airflow down the sides of the vehicle. Hood, fender, and rear bumper ducts, and a flat underfloor reduce drag, add downforce, and improve stability.

Rally Ready Hot Hatch Style

The wide stance and broad hatch exterior design of GR Corolla projects a strong, attack ready style with its black GR badged functional matrix grill. Flanked by functional air ducts on both sides, the front grille on the Circuit Grade comes in gloss-black and features integrated LED fog lamps. Auto on/off LED headlamps and LED DRLs are standard on both grades.

Both grades feature wide front and rear fender-flares. The Circuit Edition features a bulge hood with functional gloss-black air ducts. The Carbon Fiber roof on the Circuit Edition is matched with a matte-black roof mounted shark fin antenna. The Core Grade features an aluminum hood with a color-keyed roof and matching shark-fin antenna. Gloss-black heated power outside mirrors with turn signal indicators, gloss-black window molding, and black GR Corolla badges are standard on both grades.

At the rear, both grades feature a rear lower bumper cover with functional air vents, for an extra touch these vents are gloss black on the Circuit Edition. The tapering of the roof and rear pillars are complimented by a high mounted matte-black rear spoiler on the Circuit and a gloss black rear-lip spoiler on the Core Grade. The wide track and flaring of the rear wings emphasize the car’s wide and low silhouette.

Race Inspired Interior

The design of the GR Corolla’s interior reflects the car’s performance, particularly around the driver’s cockpit.

Incorporating the feedback of professional drivers, a GR Full TFT meter was newly developed with a 12.3-inch color Multi-Information Display (MID) that has a GR meter with 4WD mode, turbo pressure, gear position indicator, and tachometer. The brightly lit display is designed for easy-viewing in any condition and even features a start-up GR animation.

The shift lever has a shortened stroke for a quick throw between gears. Positioned where the driver’s arm is naturally lowered from steering, the action is light with short shift strokes, adding to the performance quality. GR Corolla uses a pull type mechanical parking brake.

The Circuit Edition’s interior is finished in black with red trim details around the door handles, center console, steering wheel and side air vents, and the Core Grade is finished with black and silver details.

Brin Naub® suede and synthetic leather-trimmed sport seats with red stitching, red mesh inserts, and GR badged headrests; 6-way adjustable driver’s seat with seatback pocket; 4-way adjustable front passenger seat with seatback pocket are standard on the Circuit Edition. Fabric sport seats with gray stitching and GR badged headrests; 6-way adjustable driver’s seat with suede sheet seatback pocket; 4-way adjustable front passenger seat with seatback pocket are standard on the Core.

Automatic climate control, power windows with one-touch auto up/down, and heated front seats and steering wheel standard on Circuit Edition. Heated front seats and steering wheel are available with the of Cold Weather package option on Core Grade.

A GR leather-trimmed tilt/telescopic sport steering wheel with audio, MultiInformation Display, Bluetooth® hands-free phone and voice-command controls comes standard on the Circuit Edition. For an added touch, a “Morizo” signed shift knob comes exclusively on the launch year Circuit Edition.

Standard on both grades is a push button GR engine start/stop button, aluminum sport pedals, two USB charging ports, one 12V auxiliary power outlet, lighted foot wells, front console tray, and rear console box. Qi-compatible wireless smartphone charging with full charge indicator light is standard on the Circuit Edition and available as part of the Technology package on the Core Grade.

The all-new Toyota Audio Multimedia system will come standard on all GR Corollas. Featuring an 8-inch touchscreen, the system offers an improved user experience thanks to new sight, touch, and voice activation. With Intelligent Assistant available through Drive Connect*, simple phrases like “Hey Toyota” awakens the system for voice-activated commands to search for directions, find POIs, adjust audio controls, change the cabin temperatures and more.

The cloud-based native navigation system offered through Drive Connect allows for real-time Over the Air updates for mapping and Points of Interest (POI), and Google POI data is integrated to ensure up-to-date search capability. It also supports standard wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto compatibility.

Toyota Audio Multimedia allows for simultaneous dual Bluetooth phone connectivity. A Wi-Fi Connect subscription offers 4G connectivity for up to five devices by turning GR Corolla into an AT&T Hotspot*, and it also offers the ability to link your separate Apple Music® and Amazon Music subscriptions to your vehicle with Integrated Streaming.

Safety & Other Technology

All GR Corolla grades come standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0), which includes enhancements made possible by system sensors with improved detection capability. The Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection is also capable of detecting motorcyclists and guardrails in certain conditions. When making a turn or approaching an intersection, the system is designed to detect forward or laterally approaching oncoming vehicles and provides audio/visual alerts and automatic braking in certain conditions. Improved lane recognition delivers refined performance of Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist and Lane Tracing Assist.

GR Corolla will be equipped with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC). Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist is designed to notify the driver via audible and visual alerts and slight steering force if it senses the vehicle is leaving the lane without engaging a turn signal. When DRCC is set and engaged, Lane Tracing Assist uses visible lane markers or a preceding vehicle to help keep the vehicle centered in its lane.

Automatic High Beams are designed to detect preceding or oncoming vehicles and automatically switch between high beam and low beam headlights. Road Sign Assist is designed to recognize certain road sign information using a forwardfacing camera and display them on the multi-information display (MID).

Toyota’s Rear Seat Reminder comes standard on all GR Corolla grades. The feature can note whether a rear door was opened within 10 minutes of the vehicle being turned on, or at any time after the vehicle has been turned on, with a reminder message in the instrument cluster after the engine is turned off, accompanied by multitone chimes.

In addition to the TSS 3.0 system, other standard safety features on the GR Corolla include Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), which is designed to help detect and warn you of vehicles approaching or positioned in the adjacent lanes and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) for added peace of mind by helping to detect vehicles approaching from either side while backing out and alerting you with a visual and audible warning. Hill Start Assist Control (HAC) also comes standard.

GR Corolla comes with a one year trial subscription of Toyota Safety Connect® at no additional cost — includes Emergency Assistance, Stolen Vehicle Locator, Roadside Assistance and Automatic Collision Notification.

GR Corolla Core Grade is available with the following packages:

Toyota’s 36-month/36,000-mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. GR Corolla also comes with ToyotaCare, a plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance and 24-hour roadside assistance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Harley-Davidson Museum

The Harley-Davidson Museum has extravagant plans for several renovations of its campus as we continue into 2022. Reinforcing its placement as an integral tourism spot in Milwaukee, they continue to live up to their esteem of being known as one of the top motorcycle magnets.

Opening their doors in 2008, the Harley-Davidson Museum has continued to remain as a staple experience for those enthralled with the world of Harley Davidson and all things auto. From their many hosted rallies to their beloved anniversary celebrations, the H-D Museum has been a hub for celebration and has been beloved by many. With their recent advancements, we’re sure that the Harley-Davidson Museum will have even more reasons for you to add it to your bucket list this year.

The first development stems from the makeover of the museums event space. The space began its remodel last summer and is set to open again this spring. Sporting a brand-new Garage, the space now encompasses over 8,000-square-feet of space accompanied by 14’ floor-to-ceiling glass doors. The view sits over Downtown Milwaukee, giving guests the view of the Menomonee River.

We, too, see the museum expanding its retail presence into the former Garage space. You may be wondering, what will happen with the old Harley-Davidson Shop once the latest one arrives? McLaren Daniel Ricciardo Edition 720S

McLaren Special Operations’ brand new, highly exclusive design model is here – the Daniel Ricciardo Edition 720S. The automobile dwells in Albert Park, Australia, native to the Australian Grand Prix and the St Kilda foreshore. The new 720S commission standard comes produced in a mere cycle of just three cars, making it a luxurious, rare find.

The Daniel Ricciardo Edition 720S takes inspiration from the McLaren Formula 1 Driver, Daniel Ricciardo himself. The commissioned sports car was produced in a joint venture with the McLaren Sydney and corresponding Melbourne retailers.

George Biggs, the Commercial Executive Director of McLaren Automotive, raved about the uniqueness of the 720S, stating, “We’re delighted to see the first of this exclusive series arrive in Australia, as at home on the tarmac around Albert Park as its namesake Daniel Ricciardo. Complete with the Australian flag adorning the front haunches, this special edition model is the perfect celebration of our Perth-born racer – we’re excited to see it out on Australian roads.”

The creation of the 720S’ operates as a celebration of Ricciardo and his prized individualism. The limited series of three models aids reference to Ricciardo’s racing number, “3.” Color scheme for the 720s, too, reflects that of the McLaren Formula 1 2021 MCL35M race car, showcasing hues of Papaya spark and Burton blue.

Ricciardo spoke on the experience of driving for McLaren, saying, “One of the great privileges of driving for McLaren is getting behind the wheel of many of the marque’s exhilarating supercars and while each offers something unique, the 720S is the absolute benchmark.”

Other notable Ricciardo racing characteristics consist of the Carbon Fibre sills engraved with his signature, ‘One of Three’ devotion plates and his racing number “3” stamped onto the 720S dihedral doors.

ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM ORCHID

Rolls-Royce recently announced their latest inspirational piece, the Rolls-Royce Phantom Orchid. Designed specifically with Singapore in mind, the Phantom is extremely rare as just one singular model has been produced. Looking to the orchid for motivation, the team chose this reference to serve as a representation of beauty and strength. Serving as a withstanding focal point in the history of art, this marks the first instance of an orchid being incorporated into a Rolls-Royce commission. Exemplifying the attributes of elegance and glamour with a light but edgy flow comes to Rolls-Royce Phantom Orchid.

BESPOKE COLLABORATION

The new commission comes as a partnership with the Bespoke Collective and the withstanding Rolls-Royce team. This imperative duo saw the likes of top designers and artists coming together to create a work of art.

Michael Bryden, Lead Designer, Rolls-Royce Bespoke, spoke on the Phantom and how it came to its full loveliness. He stated, “[the] Phantom Extended, our pinnacle motor car, was chosen to be the ‘blank canvas’ for this commission. Our concept envisaged a balanced yet progressive design, which echoes the values of the Singapore region. The orchid is seen in many facets of Asian life, a reminder that the resilient adapt and thrive regardless of the evolving environment. Phantom is the only motor car in the world to feature the Gallery, a space that enables one to exhibit art, sculptures, or objects of self-expression in the sanctuary of Phantom’s interior. For Phantom Orchid, we collaborated with award-winning artist Helen Amy Murray to create a unique, hand-sculpted silk artwork. The delicate materials and techniques that were deployed in the creation of this piece are protected behind an application of pure glass, that runs uninterrupted across the fascia of Phantom. Finished in an elegant blend of Grace White, Havana and Smoke Grey with Dark Olive stitching, the interior evokes the calm and serene nature which is inherent to the character of Phantom.”

HAND-SCULPTED ART

Through the association with Helen Amy Murray and her team, a new wave of work with Phantom’s Gallery has been generated. Their fresh and innovative design transformed the interpretation of a motor car’s presence.

Helen found creativity from the orchid, often referencing the Singapore Orchid, hence as to why the commission was constructed with the location as muse. She worked around the clock, totaling over 200 hours of subtlety refining her designs with her team of six.

The design came to initially through Helen’s hand drawings and sketches, before moving to a digital media that would ensure the success of the piece. Through the virtual enhancements, the team was able to print the art directly onto the silk crepe satin. More handwork came into play for the final part of the layout process, where they hand-molded the flowers to stimulate a 3D force.

ORCHID SANCTUARY

Rolls-Royce Bespoke Designer Yohan Benchetrit worked his magic on the interior of the Phantom. He started with an orchid-motivated Picnic Table Inlay through the rear of the suite. Moving on, Bespoke treadplates were an addition that mimicked a like theme sans text to all who hopped into the motor car. Natural colors finished out the interior of the Phantom, adding to the luxurious experience imitated.

GLORIOUS EXTERIOR

To add to the exclusivity of this Phantom, a distinct paint was crafted using advanced, modern paint technology. The color started with a base of Arctic White with a light tint of violet was laid over, motivated by the main inspiration for the piece, orchids. The addition of fine glass particles within the paint color establishes a dazzling aura.

Rolls-Royce: Year in Review

2021 proved a record-breaking year for Rolls-Royce. The clientele of the long-time luxury brand grew even greater this past year, indicating the continued craftsmanship and extravagance of this beloved automaker.

Chief Executive of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, Torsten Müller-Ötvös, reflected positively on the achievement of the brand in 2021. Müller-Ötvös stated, “In what has been an unprecedented and unpredictable year, the House of Rolls-Royce has delivered the highest-ever annual sales results in the marque’s 117-year history. In 2021, we delivered 5,586 motor cars to clients around the world, having worked closely with clients to further expand the boundaries of creativity within our Bespoke Collective. This has resulted in some truly remarkable commissions.

“Rolls-Royce has once again demonstrated an innate understanding of craftsmanship, honing progressive and proprietary techniques amongst our highly skilled and talented team. Artisans continue to further the realm of Bespoke feasibility; precious and rare materials are used with ingenuity to create world-class examples of excellence in their field.”

WRAITH KRYPTOS

The final collection of Wraith Kryptos was seen this past year, showcasing intricate and hidden ciphers throughout each car. Emphasis on hidden, each Wraith Kryptos is equipped with secret ciphers only a Rolls-Royce client could decipher, reminiscent of a rewarding puzzle.

These so-called “puzzles” found throughout the model were dreamt up and sent to the home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood for review. Ultimately, sections of these riddles have been deciphered by cipher fanatics and Rolls-Royce clientele, but the final resolution remains unsolved.

KENGO KUMA DAWN

Together, Rolls-Royce and Kengo Kuma combined the realms of extravagant automobiles and awe-inducing architecture to produce the Bespoke Rolls-Royce Dawn. This singular motor car emulates the feelings of glamour and opulence, much like the inspiration for the car of The Kita building in central Tokyo.

The overall design and aesthetic of Dawn will have drivers feeling as opulent as ever. With an exterior in the shade of Silver Haze, a silver-gray color, it mimics the appearance of The Kita’s structure. The shade of the exterior shifts when positioned in direct sunlight, illuminating a rich bronze shine. The outer style of the car comes complete with a silver hood and black coach line. Merging the interior and exterior is the open-pore royal walnut paneling showcased on the rear deck. This enhancement references the walnut paneling seen on ‘The Kita’s’ entrance lobby. The construction in this collaboration speaks to both companies’ eye towards detail.

GHOST EXTENDED URBAN SANCTUARY

Renowned for its purely lavish design philosophy, the Ghost Extended has a unique Bespoke trek. The Ghost Extended Urban Sanctuary prioritizes top material construction rather than aiming to make a bold statement. Inspiration for the automobile comes from a particular building within Shanghai’s Yu Yuan Gardens. The building has a unique ‘cracked ice’ effect on its wooden window shutters, emulated in the Ghost Extended through stitched panels in the seat inserts.

Regarding the detailed design intricacies of the Ghost Extended, the interior showcases a deep Navy Blue and Cashmere Grey color story. The colorway draws a distinctive and rare story whether one is driving themselves around or are being chauffeured. This chauffeur storyline continues through the reclinable Serenity Seating in the Urban Sanctuary. The easily reclinable seats make it seem as though one is taking a ride on a private jet.

Finishing off design elements, the Urban Sanctuary exterior is cast in gunmetal and jubilee silver, offset by a bold lime green coach line and wheel pinstripe. The edgy lime green color is showcased to mimic Shanghai’s nighttime neon lights.

DREAM GHOST

Ghost Extended is the spitting image of the first-ever personalized Illuminated Fascia. This first-of-its-kind request came from the South Florida luxury collector, David Bartosiak. Mr. Bartosiak had a vision for his personal automobile, calling upon the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective. His request entailed the Illuminated Fascia to say ‘DREAM’ instead of ‘GHOST.’

He declared, “This wish speaks of the dream I had as a young boy, born under that beautiful night sky in 1983 in Vero Beach, Florida, the dream I instill in those around me every day, and the dream I hope my spirit carries on to the world when I’m gone.”

This incredible one-of-a-kind Starlight Headliner of Mr. Bartosiak’s features an astronomical alignment of the stars in the interior. The alignment references the sky over Vero Beach, Florida, on the day of his birth in 1983, as illustrated in 1,236 single fiber optic lights.

BESPOKE WRAITH IN PEBBLE PARADISO

Another specific commission came from a client based in Shanghai; she requested a rare Bespoke Wraith in the Pebble Paradiso blue color. The client referred to the automobile as her own “Shanghai seaside-inspired paradise.” The car features a hand-painted coachline in a Seashell hue, with a delicate orchid motif. This further exemplifies the client’s desire for sophistication combined with uniqueness.

The interior of the automobile showcases why the car is a true piece of artwork; a baby girl’s footprints are shown on the Piano White monitor lid. This enhancement references the client’s beloved, cherished daughter. The interior, too, has a two-tone design of Charles blue and seashell in natural grain leather.

CULLINAN 50th

A rare Cullinan was produced in 2021 to celebrate the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) historic Golden Jubilee. The exterior of the car is polished to perfection in crystal over artic white, with a hand-painted double coachline, the upper line in hotspur red, the lower in fame green. The power of style was continued with a gold bullion coach line motif, the national flag in hotspur red, fame green, and black on the C-Pillar Motif, showcasing a unique double wheel-center pinstripe.

The interior illustrates treadplates that read ‘50th.’ The interior design mimics that of the exterior, with arctic white, black, and hotspur red leather, in contrast to a fame green contrast stitch of the UAE’s emblem upon each headrest. The showpiece of the car is the gold 50th-anniversary motif decked in the fascia, rear waterfall, and picnic tabletops.

CULLINNAN IN PIKES PEAK BLUE

Car enthusiasts Ben and Christine Sloss were in search of a Bespoke Rolls-Royce Black Badge Cullinan from Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Los Gatos.

A colorway typically not shown in Bespoke of pikes peak blue, the color references the Colorado hill-climb, a beloved experience of the clients. Pops of forge yellow spice up the color story in the hand-painted coachline, wheel-center pinstripes, and brake calipers, the Black Badge Cullinan showcases the use of the colors in the flag of Modena. The doors of the Black Badge Cullinan are embellished with Mrs. Sloss’ racing logo – a formal stiletto.

PHANTOM ORIBE

A once-in-a-lifetime collaboration saw Rolls-Royce and the House of Hermès come together to create a Bespoke Phantom for Japanese entrepreneur Yusaku Maezawa. Phantom Oribe is a motor car named mimicking the client’s world-class collection of ancient Japanese ceramics, Oribe ware. The client’s private jet was able to showcase the use of Rolls-Royce paint to create a matched set with the Phantom.

The interior is finished in Hermès Enea green leather. A first for Rolls-Royce, the door armrests, center, rear consoles and, most particularly, the signature headliner is equipped with the famed Hermès ‘Toile H’ canvas.

PHANTOM TEMPUS COLLECTION

The Phantom Tempus Collection narrowed to 20 examples of Rolls-Royce Phantoms. A new edition of the Phantom notes the concept of time – how it goes and how it can ostensibly stand still.

The aesthetic of the design for this project hints at themes of time and the cosmos. One key theory imposed into the design comes from the pulsar, a mysterious astronomical phenomenon found only in the deepest sections of the galaxy. The pulsar is essentially a complex, white-hot star that sends electromagnetic radiation in pulses, hence making it a common suggestion of precise clocks through the universe.

The exterior of the Phantom Tempus Collection is dripping in a new Bespoke paint of kairos blue. The rich color symbolizes the uncertainty and deepness of space. To further the cosmos inspiration, the paint features jewel-like blue mica flakes that glint when caught by the light.

PHANTOM KOA

Another first for Rolls-Royce comes with the Phantom Koa – it is the first Rolls- Royce Phantom to use Koa wood. Koa wood is a unique species of tree only found growing in the Hawaiian soil. Inspired by car enthusiast Jack Boyd Smith, Jr. and his wife Laura, the car captures the essence of the tenderness and character of Koa.

Koa is guarded by state and national parks, and it only grows in Hawaii. The only way to harvest the wood is from private agricultural land, making it as rare as you can get. A Rolls-Royce Wood Specialist refers to the ability to find Koa as a ‘one in a million chance.’

Mr. Smith’s Bespoke commission took almost three years of cooperation to generate, but it is now a part of his collection of motor cars in the JBS Collection Museum.

LANDSPEED COLLECTION

Another limited collection, the Landspeed Collection consists of 25 examples of Black Badge Dawn and 35 of Black Badge Wraith. The creativity for the collection came from George Eyston’s noteworthy life and accomplishments. Hints of the landscape of the Bonneville Salt Flats, where Thunderbolt made himself the fastest man on Earth, are incorporated into the collection as well.

Throughout George Eyston’s life, he was awarded three major honors: the Military Cross, the Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur, and the Order of the British Empire (OBE). Each of these honors is prominent in the Black Badge Wraith and Dawn Landspeed. Clever easter eggs that reference the original medal ribbons are placed throughout the cars in the driver’s door, as it was made from the same Grosgrain weave silk of the medals.

CULLINAN ‘BLACK AND BRIGHT’

Imagined with the essence of Moscow at night comes the design of the Black Badge Cullinan ‘Black and Bright’ by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Moscow. The 2021 model of the Black Badge Wraith ‘Black and Bright’ was an elevated design of the model popular two years ago.

Found only at the Muscovite dealership, this narrow collection showcases five Black Badge Cullinans. Each car is available in edgy color combos of magma red, orange metallic, twilight purple, forge yellow, and turchese. Black Badge Cullinan’s Technical Carbon veneer is individualized to a corresponding color inlay design, while starlight headliner matches the exterior and interior highlights.

ROLLS-ROYCE COACHBUILD: BOAT TAIL

Coachbuilding is promised as a long-lasting feature of Rolls-Royce after the production of three Boat Tails amidst the contemporary coachbuilding development.

The process of coachbuilding is an extremely refined tactic of Rolls-Royce Bespoke, set aside for those who are looking to push the boundaries and seek change.

Boat Tail is a handcrafted creation, where bodywork and interior are produced with the client’s eye to exact requirements. A Boat Tail tells the story of Rolls-Royce’s deep history, while still offering a new, modern design.

The first of the three Boat Tails were exhibited at Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in October, 2021. The second will make its first appearance at Villa d’Este 2022.

MORGAN PLUS FOUR LM62

The Morgan Motor Company recently revealed the launch of the Plus Four LM62. This revamped version of the traditional Morgan Plus Four consists of only 62 examples and pays homage to the Morgan Plus 4 SuperSports – aka TOK 258 – that won the 2.0-litre class at the 1962 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The original TOK 258 was designed in a dark green color, in contrast to the trendy red shade that was showcased on Morgan vehicles during that time. The Plus Four LM62 combines the use of both timeless colors. Featuring a Heritage White hardtop, this color is available as a first for the model. Continuing to reference the commemorative Morgan is an LM62 graphics pack with roundels of the number ’29,’ and an LM62 rear badge, silver wire wheels, a Le Mans-inspired fuel filler cap and an arched back panel.

The interior of the model comes embellished with an LM62 metal plaque that highlights the car’s distinctive and rare structure. Another exquisite feature of the model stages an LM62 laser-stamped black saddle-leather door pulls and headrests stitched with the same LM62 graphic. Heated black leather Comfort Plus seats come adorned with horizontal pleating, perforated seat centers and matching stitch color, finishing off with leather wrapped seat backs.

If clients are interested in additional alterations to a Plus Four LM62, there is availability to include a soft-top hood, LM62 photographic build record and an LM62 accessory pack showcasing two-eared wheel spinners, a Moto-lisa steering wheel, headlight tape and a chrome interior rear-view mirror.

Starting A Car That Has Been Sitting For Months

Whether you’re going on vacation for a while or temporarily relocating to another location for work, you may need to leave your vehicle for an extended period of time without using it.

If you are in this situation, it’s important to know how not driving your car for a month or more will affect its performance, including its ability to safely start.

What Happens If You Don’t Start Your Car For A Month?

Cars are designed to be driven, not to sit idle for months. When left unused, engine fluids start to break down and parts that aren’t getting lubricated begin to corrode. Even worse­–animals may move in, chewing on anything they can reach. Rodents often chew through wiring harnesses or other car parts that are made out of organic materials, which can cause substantial damage.

Tires are also affected by inactivity. When a car is not being used, the air will slowly start to leak out of its tires, especially in the cold weather. The weight of the vehicle will press down onto the deflating tires, which can cause flat spots. Filling the tires with air often solves this problem, but sometimes flat spots become permanent.

Moisture can also start to accumulate in the gas tank if the car is left unused for a long period of time. Over time, this can lead to corrosion.

How long can a car be left unused? In general, the longer a car sits, the worse these problems can become. But, it’s not all bad news.

Leaving A Car Unused For 3 Months? Here’s What to Do Before Starting It

If you plan on leaving your vehicle unused, it’s important to know how to start a car that has been sitting for two weeks, two months, or even two years.

Even after a few months, most modern cars can still be safely started. That is, providing the battery still holds a charge. However, there are a few simple checks you should make first. This will help you quickly identify problems while making sure your car is safe to start.

Here’s what to do:

Check The Engine Oil

Check the oil level using your vehicle’s dipstick. If you’re not sure where the dipstick is located, refer to your owner’s manual for a diagram. The correct oil level should be between the two indicator marks on the dipstick.

Be sure the engine is cooled off for at least ten minutes before you check the oil. When you go to check the oil not only should you take notice of the level, but also you should observe the color and consistency. If this oil is thick and gritty and the color is dark, then it’s likely time for an oil change. Be aware that if your oil level is low, you should not drive your vehicle until you have topped it off to the recommended level with the recommended oil.

Check All Exterior Lights

Check that your headlights, fog lights, high-beam lights, brake lights, reverse lights, and indicators are all working before you head out on the road. The easiest way to do this is to grab a friend or family member, so one person can activate the various lights and the other can check if they’re working.

Check For Signs Of Leaks

Before you check the engine oil and coolant levels, take a look at the floor under the car to see if there are any signs that something has been leaking. As a general rule, you can typically narrow down the issue by observing the color of leak, though it’s always best to have a professional inspect and diagnose the leak before driving:

  • Black or light brown usually indicates an engine oil leak
  • Red or brown usually indicates a transmission leak
  • Clear, red or brown usually indicates a power steering leak
  • Transparent yellow or brown usually indicates a brake system leak

Driving your car while it’s leaking fluid can cause serious (and expensive) damage. It’s important to avoid driving if there are any signs of a leak. Check for any leaks underneath your car before taking your car for a drive for the first time in months.

Check The Brake Fluid

To check your vehicle’s brake fluid level, you need to identify the brake master cylinder reservoir. It is typically mounted at the rear of the engine, in line with the position of the brake pedal. Your owner’s manual should be able to show you exactly where it’s located.

You’re simply performing a visual check of the fluid level against the markings on the translucent brake fluid reservoir. Remove the cap of the reservoir and note if the fluid looks healthy or dirty. If your brake fluid is low, it could indicate a problem with your brakes that will need repair as soon as possible. Dirty brake fluid can indicate water contamination has occurred, in which the vehicle’s brake system will need to be flushed.

Inspect The Battery

The first issue you may encounter if your car is left idle for an extended period of time is car battery problems. Batteries slowly lose voltage over time when left idle. If you haven’t had your car hooked up to a trickle charger or any other type of voltage maintainer, the voltage will have likely dropped below the amount necessary to start the car. Jump starting your vehicle may solve the problem. After the jump start, let your vehicle run for 5 – 10 minutes to recharge the battery. Then, switch it off and attempt to restart it. If your car won’t restart, there could be a problem with the battery or your vehicle’s electrical system. This issue can leave you stranded if it’s not remedied.

Before you attempt to jump-start your vehicle, remove the battery cables and check that the battery terminals are clean and clear of debris and corrosion.

Ideally, the battery should have a full charge before the vehicle goes into storage. Further, the battery should be disconnected from the engine to prevent discharging. The charge should be checked every three months. The battery should be recharged if it drops under around 12.4 volts.

Check The Gas

It only takes one month for the gas in your tank to start breaking down. As the lighter components of gas evaporate and oxidate, gas loses its combustibility and becomes less effective. As it degrades, it forms a gummy residue that gets released into the fuel system– increasing the likelihood of a blockage occurring. Old fuel can cause an engine to misfire and stall.

Obviously, we don’t recommend sniffing gasoline, but gas that has started to break down will have a distinct sour smell that resembles the smell of varnish. One option is to siphon a small amount out of your fuel tank and check the color. Old gas will be darker than fresh gasoline, and you may even be able to see the gumminess that have started to form.

If your car has been sitting for three months or longer, it is recommended to drain the tank and fill it with fresh fuel. For a car that has been sitting for a month or two, it is recommended to top up the fuel tank with fresh gas and dilute the old gas before it passes through your vehicle’s fuel system.

Finally, if you find you just aren’t driving your car much and it’s likely to sit idle for 30 days or more, a fuel stabilizer should be added to the gas. This will prevent degradation for up to 12 months. It is the easiest way to avoid damage to your cars fuel system.

Inspect The Tires

A visual check of the tires should be performed to make sure they are in good condition, before attempting to drive the vehicle. Air pressure should be checked and adjusted to the manufacturer’s recommended psi. This can be found on a sticker that is usually located on the driver’s door jamb. You could also find the recommended psi for your tires in your owner’s manual.

Upon inspection, your tires may look normal. But, when you get behind the wheel to take your car for its first spin in months, instead of the familiar smooth ride you may feel a vibration through the steering wheel and hear an unfamiliar noise. This is caused by a flat spot in the tire– a problem for any car that sits idle for extended periods of time.

This occurs when a stationary tire has to bear the load of a vehicle for an extended period. As the weight of the vehicle presses down, the bottom of the tire spreads out on the ground. As time goes on, the rubber gets stiffer, leaving flat spots on the tire.

Generally speaking, as you drive the car and the tires get warm and regain flexibility, the flat spots will disappear. This usually takes around 15 minutes. In extreme winter temperatures, these flat spots can become permanent if a vehicle hasn’t moved for several months.

Tires can develop flat spots if your car sits for an extended amount of time. Check your tire pressure before starting your car again to make sure it is at the recommended psi.

Check For Rodents

When the weather cools off, rats and mice look for warmer shelter and can be disastrous for car owners as their engine bay doubles as this season’s hottest rodent hotel. After mice have made a car their new home, their sharp teeth can cause serious damage to engine hoses, plastic panels, and wiring.

Signs that your car may have a mouse problem include:

  • Droppings and an associated bad smell
  • Unfamiliar noises when you switch on the fan or heater, indicating the presence of a nest
  • Food scraps in unusual places
  • Check engine light on your dash, indicating wiring damage
  • Bite marks on hoses and wires

Getting mice out of your car can be a time-consuming job. Not only will you have to find and remove their nest, but you’ll also have to clean and disinfect the area around the nest, and more than likely repair any damage they caused. There are many methods to prevent mice from moving back in such as spraying peppermint oil or putting out moth balls. Forget the ultrasonic sound repellants though–they won’t do anything besides put a hole in your wallet.

How Often Should You Start Your Car

Leaving a car unused for three months—or even three weeks—is not ideal. If possible, start your vehicle a couple of times per month when it is not being used. It’s best to not only start the vehicle, but to also drive it for about ten miles before putting it back in storage.

Starting the vehicle without taking it out for a quick spin will warm up the engine, but nothing else. It could also drain the vehicle’s battery, which will make it harder to start next time.

On the other hand, starting the car and driving it for 10 miles will fully warm up other parts of the vehicle, including the transmission, brakes, and suspension. Driving this short distance will also give your vehicle’s battery a chance to recharge, so it’s easier to start in the future.

Consider asking a close friend or relative to help.  Maybe they can take your car out once in a while when they go out to dinner or to run chores.

How to Prepare For Not Driving Your Car For A Month

If you plan on leaving a car unused for 3 months, there are certain steps you can take to keep it in good condition during this period of inactivity. Here’s what to do:

  • Use a car cover. You should always cover a vehicle that is not being used—even if you are storing it indoors. A car cover can protect your vehicle from long-term storage hazards, such as bad weather and animals.
  • Wash it. Be sure to thoroughly wash your vehicle before putting it in storage. Leaving water stains or other debris on your vehicle for a long period of time can lead to paint damage.
  • Get an oil change. An oil change will remove the dirty oil, which contains contaminants that could damage your engine while the vehicle isn’t being used.
  • Fill your gas tank. If the gas tank is empty or even half full, moisture will start to accumulate if the vehicle is not being used. To prevent this problem, fill the gas tank prior to putting your vehicle in storage.
  • Place the vehicle on jack stands. If you plan on not driving your car for a month or more, it’s best to take the wheels off and prop the vehicle up on jack stands. This requires additional work, but it will prevent flat spots and other forms of tire damage.
  • Don’t use the parking brake. Rust can form in the braking system if the vehicle is left in storage for a long period of time. If the parking brake is applied, this rust can cause the brake pads to fuse together with the rotor. That’s why it’s best not to use the parking brake before leaving your vehicle for a month or longer.

Following these tips can help preserve the life of your vehicle while it’s not being used.
