Ovolo Hotels Go Vegetarian

Ovolo Hotels announced Thursday– which was World Vegetarian Day— that all of its restaurants and bars in Australia and Hong Kong will move to completely vegetarian menus for the next year. This initiative has been termed “The Year of the Veg” and makes the hotel group the first in the world to eliminate meat from its menus.

Ovolo Founder and CEO, Girish Jhunjhnuwala, said, “We want to be conscious about what we are consuming and practice environmental sustainability as best as we can, as this leads to a larger impact on humanity, not just the environment.”

These venues include:

  • Monster Kitchen & Bar at Ovolo Nishi in Canberra, AU- New Executive Chef Paul Wilson will implement his experience in internationally renowned kitchens to create a sophisticated vegetable-forward menu.
  • ZA ZA TA at Ovolo the Valley in Brisbane, AU- Managed by Israeli-born chef Roy Ner, formerly of Nour and Lilah in Sydney
  • Mister Percy at Ovolo 1888 Darling Harbour in Sydney, AU- This location will be transformed into a vegetarian Italian wine bar.
  • Komune at Ovolo Southside in Hong Kong- The location is cutting meat from its menus, and the hotel will soon debut a new restaurant that will be fully vegetarian, as well.

Other locations such as Alibi Bar & Kitchen at Ovolo Woolloomooloo in Australia and New Zealand, and Veda at Ovolo Central in Hong Kong will continue with their vegan and vegetarian menus, respectively. 

In addition to moving fully vegetarian, Ovolo has already taken numerous other steps to implement eco-friendliness in their hotels. The hotel collection has eliminated single-use plastic bathroom amenities and replaced them with re-fillable, tamper-free pump bottles that are HDPE recyclable, eliminated single-use plastic straws, introduced reusable woven bags for slippers, and began using biodegradable materials in all laundry bags and packaging.

Gwen Stefani’s Cool gets a synth cover by Strath

Most use the California poppies for pretty instagrams.

Fewer use them to film music videos.

Strath falls into the latter.

The 24-year-old Australian artist took full advantage of the super bloom in his debut music video for his latest release “Cool”. The track is a cover of the 2004 Gwen Stefani smash hit. 15 years later, Strath adds new color to the track’s pop virtues, letting his listeners stew in a sea of sweeping 80s synthesizers that smell a lot like Tame Impala.

A real highlight is the brief musical interlude in the song’s middle, where a new guitar/synth melody soars over the tight groove of spank-y drums and walking bass line. A credit to his talents as a producer, the way Strath balances many unique elements in the mix ensure that this track is a real head-bopper.

The nostalgic, slightly haunting feel of the song’s outro leaves it feeling more sombre than the original. But the playful tone of the music video — where Strath sings next to a couple that must have been making out for several hours during production — perhaps suggests otherwise.

Strath affirms in the YouTube video’s description that the video was shot with “care” in the poppy fields. Whilst we hope that was the case, we can confirm with confidence that this track is a real banger.

He moved halfway across the world to go to Harvard, where he spent the next 4 years making movies and even more tracks. SambaFunk! Perform at Senator Kamala Harris for President 2020 Campaign Rally

Bay Area artscollective SambaFunk! performed Sunday, January 27th as part of the Senator Kamala Harris for President 2020 Campaign Rally in Oakland.

Theo Aytchan Williams, Samba Funk! Artistic Director said, “We are beyond honored to have been invited to participate in this historic moment in time by performing at the Senator Harris for President Campaign Rally.”

The group recently released a new version of the classic “Lift Every Voice & Sing” to coincide with Black History Month in February and to celebrate the song’s 120th Anniversary.

“Lift Every Voice and Sing” often referred to as the “Black National Anthem”, was originally written as a poem in 1899 by James Weldon Johnson to be recited by 500 students at the Stranton School in Jacksonville, Florida as a welcoming poem to educator Booker T. Washington in commemorate of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. It was later put to music by John Rosamond Johnson and adopted as the Black National Anthem by the NAACP.

The SambaFunk! version of “Lift Every Voice & Sing” comes on the 120th anniversary of the song being written in hopes that the new release will shine a light on the Black Experience and ignite a sense of pride among Black and oppressed people worldwide. Historically music often plays a significant role in bringing people together for positive change. The group hopes this song evokes conversations between Americans of all backgrounds.

Williams said, “2019 is the perfect time for the message of this monumental work to be heard around the world to help raise our collective consciousness and present a living example of how music can play a significant role in unification.”

Many are already celebrating the song and its goodwill message including several NBA teams who will be performing the song as part of their Black History Month presentations.

Samba Funk! will also be seen in the EPIX documentary series, Elvis Goes There on February 11th with host film critic Elvis Mitchell, performing “Lift Every Voice & Sing”.

Abuse of Power – Help End the Cycle of Abuse

Joe Biden was raised by a gentle, honorable man who always taught his children that the greatest sin anyone could commit is the abuse of power — and the cardinal sin is when a man raises his hand to a woman or a child or someone with less physical power, including raising a hand to a weaker man.

When he started to work on this issue, violence against women, children and men, were not taken as seriously, and survivors were not given the recourse they deserved. Too often, victims of violent crimes were blamed. Too often, perpetrators were not prosecuted.

Joe Biden, Hope for Children Foundation, and many others, are convinced America needs to change its culture. And in order to change the culture, we have to pull the mask off of this dirty little secret. A simple message for all Americans:  You should be the ultimate agents of change. It’s time for all of you to step up. 

Think about a culture that exists when a victim who’s been abused or raped is asked all the wrong questions: Why were you there? What were you wearing? What did you say? Why did you say it? What were you drinking? Those are all the wrong questions. It’s never the victim’s fault.

The right questions are: What made that person think they had a right to touch me?  Why on Earth did no one step up when they had the chance? Or for you men:  Why didn’t I have the courage to speak up — to intervene, to act?  Men to ask yourselves: What would I have done if she was my sister?

Passing the Violence Against Women Act in 1994, has literally saved lives. Women, men and children need to know they won’t be abused again by the system, they’re reporting violen! ce at higher rates. Twenty – five years ago, there was no domestic violence hotline — now 3.4 million women and men have called the National Domestic Violence Hotline and gotten support and help.

The yearly domestic violence rates dropped 64 percent between 1993 and 2010. There were no special victims units — now, police departments across the country have specially trained personnel to treat domestic abuse as crime rather than a private matter. The culture is changing so that abusers are now treated as the criminals they are. It’s no longer acceptable for a man to abuse a woman in public or privately in the home. Sexism is no longer tolerated. We no longer remain silent when a woman is being abused in front of us. The #MeToo and #Time’sUp Movements have helped to empower victims of violent crimes. The clock has run out on sexual assault, harassment and inequality in the workplace.

We all should take a pledge and act on three things: (1) I promise to intervene instead of being a bystander. (2) I promise to recognize that any time consent is not given — or cannot be given — it’s sexual assault and it’s a crime; and (3) I promise to do everything I! can to create an environment where sexual assault is unacceptable, where survivors are supported, where perpetrators are treated with the moral and legal accountability they deserve.
