Call for dance video submissions to compete live at the UPROAR HIP HOP FESTIVAL at The Torch at the LA Memorial Coliseum on August 13th; win $5K in prize money

UPROAR HIP HOP FESTIVAL at The Torch at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the immersive and interactive music, arts and nightlife experience hosted by Lil Wayne’s lifestyle brand GKUA and headlined by Lil Wayne, along with performances by Young Money and soon to be announced opening acts and Special Guests, on August 13th, is proud to announce trend-setting dancer and choreographer Samantha Long as host and lead judge of the festival’s DANCE COMPETITION. The competition is open to all dancers in California, or those willing to travel to California to compete, to show off their best moves, live at UPROAR to audiences worldwide. The competition reflects GKUA and Lil Wayne’s ongoing mission to discover and support new, up and coming talented creators with an array of artistic pursuits.

Judging alongside Long, who is co-producing the event with her company A THREAT Media, are iconic dancers: Lil Buck, the Memphis turned global sensation showing the world that Jookin is fine art; and Jon Boogz, who continues to push the evolution of what dance can be. Lil Buck and Jon Boogz are also co-founders of Movement Art Is, an organization to elevate the artistic, educational and social impact of dance.

“That GKUA lifestyle is all about inspiration, and that’s what Samantha, Buck and Jon are bringing to UPROAR DANCE COMPETITION,” said Lil Wayne.

CALLING ALL CA DANCERS, SHOOT YOUR SHOT:

Video submissions from 2-person dance teams, novice to experienced, are now being accepted for the chance to compete live in front of thousands at the UPROAR HIP HOP FESTIVAL and streaming worldwide—plus win thousands of dollars. To enter, post a dance video on Instagram, tagging @uproardancecompetition @samantha_long_ @lilbuckdalegend @jonboogz and use #UPROARDANCECOMPETITION. SUMMER FREEDOM, THE BIG DANCE:

Only 12 talented teams will be selected from the social media submissions to move to the semi-final round in LA. Host and lead judge Samantha Long, who has worked with A-listers from Nicki Minaj to J Balvin to REI Ami, will run the Elimination Challenge, with Jon Boogz, in a two-day studio event on July 24-25, which will be live streamed worldwide, by Mandolin the 2021 Pollstar Award Winning Livestream platform. The competition will include choreographed pieces from each duo and improv dance battle rounds, to narrow the 12 semifinalist teams to the final six duos.

On August 13 at The Torch at the LA Memorial Coliseum, Lil Buck and Jon Boogz will perform Judge Showcases to open the competition. After a finalist showcase round and dance battle round, one team will be crowned winner and win $5K. Long will then lead the finalists through an original choreographed dance performance, opening the evening of the UPROAR musical stage performances.

“Our goal with GKUA Inspired is to spotlight talented artists from all disciplines, and bring world-wide attention to their work. At UPROAR, the Dance Competition and the GKUA Inspired Photo Competition, we will create experiences that are inspiring, uplifting and engaging for the participants and the in-person and streaming audiences,” said GKUA Creative Director and UPROAR Producer Baqi Kopelman. “At GKUA, we want you to feel inspired and to share your passion with the world.”

MEET THE JUDGES:

SAMANTHA LONG is the Founder and CEO of A THREAT Media—an entertainment powerhouse built by women and allies of women, for women. Through an impressive social media influence and an in-house production team, A THREAT creates viral trends and moments that empower female trendsetters across pop-culture, music, fashion and business. The public praise Samantha has received from Billie Eilish, Shakira and Nicki Minaj are just the most recent validations for a movement decades in the making.

Known for her trademark ‘hip-hop-in-heels’ choreography, Samantha impacts hundreds of millions of fans worldwide through features in motion picture, television, music, strategic brand partnerships and innumerable viral videos—most recently including her signature intertwining of martial arts and dance.

“Coming up, there has always been a mentality towards dance that there is a ceiling to this career—just being in the background instead of being the star. We’re smashing that ceiling with this festival,” said Long. “I am immensely proud to be leading this effort with such an incredible team. LIL BUCK is a movement artist who began jookin at age 13. Named one of Dance Magazine’s 25 to Watch, he gained international notoriety after an impromptu piece with Yo-Yo Ma went viral. Since then, he has collaborated with artists including JR, Damian Woetzel, the New York City Ballet, Madonna, Benjamin Millepied and Spike Lee; along with brands including Glenfiddich, Louis Vuitton and Versace.

“I’m very excited to judge the UPROAR DANCE COMPETITION and to see the fresh new talent out there,” said Lil Buck. “This will be an awesome experience for dancers at a monumental event to showcase what they love to do—with the chance to win $5K in prize money while they’re having fun! I know we are going to see some spectacular dancers giving it their all.”

JON BOOGZ is a movement artist, choreographer and director who pushes the evolution of dance—sharing his art form with audiences of all backgrounds while inspiring and bringing awareness to social issues. Collaborators and clients include Mikhail Baryshnikov, Naomi Campbell and the Tribeca Film Festival.

“I’m super pumped to be a judge at this year’s UPROAR DANCE COMPETITION. It’s a blessing that Lil Wayne and his team are giving dancers an opportunity to shine and have their talents be displayed on a big platform,” said Boogz. “I think the viewers of this dance battle are in store for something beautiful. About Jon Batiste
One of the best-known musicians of his generation, virtuoso pianist, singer, bandleader, educator and television personality Jon Batiste has spent his career bringing that music back to where it started — that is, with the people. From his days at Juilliard, where he established his Stay Human band by playing around New York City’s subways and in street performances he called “love riots,” to his work since 2015 as the bandleader and musical director of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, the Kenner, Louisiana native has consistently channeled his superb technical skill and deep knowledge of jazz tradition towards a specific, intentional purpose: making people’s lives better and brighter, one harmonaboard (that’s harmonica and keyboard, combined) solo at a time.

Born into Louisiana’s legendarily musical Batiste family, Jon has performed and recorded widely since his teens. He’s been awarded the American Jazz Museum Lifetime Achievement Award, the Harry Chapin ASCAP Humanitarian Award and appeared on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list; Batiste also currently serves as the Music Director of The Atlantic and the Co-Artistic Director of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem.

Jon Batiste is devoted to the education and mentorship of young musicians. He has led his own Social Music Residency and Mentoring Program sponsored by Chase, as well as master classes throughout the world. He has also led several cultural exchanges, beginning in 2006, while still a teen, with the Netherlands Trust, which brought students from the USA and Holland to perform with him at the Royal Concertgebouw and Carnegie Hall.

Batiste balances a demanding performance schedule with public speaking engagements, masterclasses, brand partnerships, community activism and acting roles. His composing and songwriting will be featured in his large-scale, genre-melding symphonic work “American Symphony,” set to premiere at Carnegie Hall in 2021 and he has been developing a Broadway musical about the life of famed painter Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Rafael V. DeLeon who will be seen playing ‘Manny Garciela,’ in the Netflix & Spike Lee remake of “She’s Gotta Have It,” which premieres Thanksgiving day.


DeLeon will star alongside DeWanda Wise (“Underground,” “Shots Fired”), Cleo Anthony (“Transparent,” “Extant”) and Anthony Ramos (“Hamilton,” “Will & Grace”) as ‘Manny Garciela,’ best friend of Mars Blackmon (played by Ramos). The show, a revival of the 1986 film that launched Lee’s career, follows ‘Nola Darling’ (Wise) as she navigates life, three relationships and dating in 2017.

Born in Washington, D.C. and raised in Prince George’s County, Maryland, Rafael has always been one to follow his dreams, some of which didn’t always include pursuing television and film. As a kid he grew up playing sports. After a year of playing Division II basketball at Averett University, he decided to take his talents to the highest competitive level. After being accepted at Temple University (studying business administration and marketing), and while there earned his Bachelor’s Degree while playing on the men’s basketball team as a walk-on for three years, earning a scholarship his last year. Post-graduation, DeLeon landed a job in politics working for the mayor of D.C. in the Executive Office of Boards & Commissions.

 

DeLeon has also appeared in award-winning television shows such as “House of Cards” (Netflix), “The Americans” (FX) and “The Breaks (VH1).” When not acting, Rafael has no trouble keeping busy. He enjoys playing chess, day trading and reading self-help books. He also loves sports, especially basketball and football, and nerding out over a good documentary or cult classic. On the charity front, Rafael is passionate about lending his time to give back to those who remind him of himself by teaching them skills to better their lives. He also works closely with the Make A Play organization, which provides a place for New York City youth to participate in comprehensive academic and athletic programs. Rafael currently resides in Brooklyn, New York, where he looks forward to getting his morning coffee each day at the local bodega.
