QxA with Akeem Mair

This holiday season, actor Akeem Mair took the time to speak with 360 Magazine about his craft, his inspirations, how his career has been impacted by COVID-19, and more. Movie star Akeem Mair is the entertainment industry’s up-and-coming icon. In his career as an artist, he has appeared in several movie productions including All About Money, A Wonderful World, Limbo, Life of a Villain, Red, Fine Line, Silent Love, The Kidnap, etc. He’s worked with many production companies, including the Columbia College of Hollywood Production.

Akeem has signed with two agencies: Commercial Talent Agency (under Sarah Angeli) and Minc Talent (under Mariko Ballentine). At 32, Akeem is in his prime. With his noteworthy work ethic and passion, he is destined for greater heights. In fact, he has over 5 million views for a single video alone – the time when he appeared for The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which Ellen described as “the best episode she’s ever seen.”

What do you love most about being an actor?

I found a strong love of being in front of the camera with everybody watching. It’s like my escape from my own reality, which is refreshing to me. I get the opportunity to pour myself into different characters and experience that person’s life. How they see the world and how different their life experiences are from mines. I love to learn how they think, how they would react in certain situations, the way they talk and walk, the way they dress, etc. Then, you can take what you learn from playing that character and use it to make your own life more complete. Meaning if you like how that character approaches life, then copy and apply it. At first the camera scared me – I’m not gonna lie. But a director once told me that the fear I show in front of the camera robs the audience of their entertainment. Once I broke out of that, my understanding of my own craft changed. Acting is my life!

Did you always wanted to be an actor, or did you have other ambitions?

Actually, believe it or not, I wanted to be a financial banker. I watched Michael Douglas in the film called, “The Game,” and became hooked after that. I saw the 2000 BMW 740 I, the designer suits, the excitement of winning their clients’ money in the office, the personal maid that lives at his house, and I always loved crunching numbers in a calculator. But as I was working at Ralph’s grocery store when a loyal customer ending up changing my whole life. I was a cashier, and she came into my line with a sad demeanor. I could tell something was troubling her, so I tried to brighten up her day with my personality. I said “Hi, it’s good to see you again, did you find everything ok?” She said softly, “Yes I did, thank you!” I said, “Usually I see you smiling, but whatever you’re going through I know God will not give you more than you can handle! He has something better for you!” After the transaction I said, “Have a Blessed day! I hope to see you again soon.” Immediately she paused and finally looked up at me for the first time and I could tell she had been crying. She asked me, “Are you an actor?” I said, “No. Why do you ask?” She said, “Because your energy is filled with so much positive energy. You move people by it. You lifted up my spirits after I just lost my house in a foreclosure. Thank you!” Her reply shocked me. After she left, I went home that day and wondered, What would my life look like if I was a successful actor? I thought about how I would be able to help my family so much more and how I can infect millions of people with the same positive energy. That night, I searched ‘how to become an actor’ and it said most start as an extra on a movie set. The next day I reached out to Central Casting in Burbank for their free introduction and here I am today! I am more than satisfied and really love what I do!

How has COVID-19 impacted your industry?

My industry has changed a lot! At first, the acting classes I would attend would be at different acting studios across Los Angeles and held in person. Same as the auditions I would get. And I would have to deal with sitting in the heavy traffic, busy freeways, hoping to get to where I need to on time. Now it’s crazy to think everything is happening on my iPhone 11 Pro! My auditions are either through Zoom or I would have to submit a self-tape that would record off of my phone’s camera and be edited in the iMovie feature. All of my classes have been online through Zoom. So, the coaches now email you a link to jump on when class starts. The biggest issue now is not the heavy traffic, it’s the internet connection. If you have bad WiFi, it easily destroys your Zoom live audition and costs you the job. So, it is extremely important now to have amazing WiFi connection.

Do you have other passions besides acting?

I love writing poetry; it really soothes my soul. I like to write out all the emotions and experiences I go through like in poems and lyrics. 2pac was the one who really inspired me to use my pen as an outlet.

What is the biggest life lesson you learned?

You have to decide to go after your dreams because that’s what you want to do. There’s going to be so many people in your ear telling you different things and most of the time, it’s family because they want to protect you from failing. The only problem about that is it takes you away from doing what you love and moves you closer to a life of regret. So, take your time and really think about your dreams and how you want your life to be. Take out a piece of paper and write what you want out of life. I am an actor today because it’s my dream. I wrote it down, I proclaimed it in front of the mirror, and I tell my friends and family all the time what my dreams are and that I am going to achieve them.

What are the biggest challenges you have faced and how did you overcome them?

My biggest challenge is balancing my money and time. Because let me tell you, I’ve invested a lot of money to strive as an actor. Dreams come with lots of sacrifices. This is the one side of dreams that is not so glamorous. I can’t watch television when I get home because I have to practice, do auditions, or attend classes. Before I can even think about buying the latest technology, clothes, or shoes, I would have to also think about classes, camera equipment, printing, headshots, costumes, etc. You have to be willing at any moment to sacrifice for your dreams and it’s the hardest part. I’m giving up sleep most days because I’m so busy, but I love it!!

Who are the people who are your biggest influences and why?

Tupac Shakur, Denzel Washington and Eddie Murphy are my biggest influences. Everyone knows why Eddie Murphy is so big of an inspiration to me. It’s how I got my name! His character, Akeem, from Coming to America made my parents fall in love with the name due to his performance. As I’m older now and have watched it for myself, it’s crazy so much of my personality has rubbed off of him and into me. He possesses a sense of humor and radiates authority, yet he remains humble, practices kindness and self-sacrifices for the people around him. Denzel Washington is my next inspiration. I always love how Denzel approaches his game. The confidence, swag, fearlessness, and mental toughness he possesses in most of the characters he played, you can just feel his presence through your television. His Oscar performance character Alonzo Harris in Training Day was unbelievable. You felt the selfishness, greed, carelessness, ruthlessness, and his betrayal. I would love to ask him, “how do you get to that place in a character and stay there?” Finally, 2pac! His wisdom and his work ethic are what really blow my mind. I love how he was able to captivate a crowd of people and get everyone to follow him around. To be so young and so ahead of his time is crazy. He inspires me to think ahead always and to do more than what you think your capable of doing. And stop taking breaks! I remember how upset he got when his team took breaks and reminds them how time is short.

If you could change one thing you did at the beginning of your career, what would it be?

I would go back to tell the younger me to keep track of your day. Stop worrying about your yearly resolutions and worry about your daily resolutions. Because if you can’t take care of a simple day, how on earth are you going to conquer your year? It’s going to escape you every time. I always hear it in people’s voices when they talk about what they are going to be or going to have. I’m like, wait a minute, what are you going to do today? And people are usually confused or haven’t thought about it. See, it’s that’s answer right there that’s gonna kill everything you just told me.

In honor of the popular Friendsgiving holiday, Disney has teamed up with award-winning Chef Roy Choi – known for his popular restaurants Kogi BBQ and Best Friend – and five renowned pizzerias across the U.S. to launch Mickey & Friends(giving), offering a whole new take on the traditional ‘pie.’
Disney and Chef Choi collaborated with his friends at Jon & Vinny’s in Los Angeles; Home Slice Pizza in Austin; Roberta’s Pizza in Brooklyn; Pizzeria Beddia in Philadelphia; and Pizzeria Bianco in Phoenix to create six specialty pizzas inspired by the Sensational Six friends that will be available for one day only, on Saturday, Nov. 21. DISNEY’S ZOMBIES 2

Walt Disney Records is set to release the soundtrack for the Disney Channel Original Movie “ZOMBIES 2,” the sequel to the #1 cable TV telecast of 2018 with Kids and Girls 6-11 and Tweens and Girls 9-14. Featuring original songs performed by the cast, the soundtrack will be available on Friday, February 14, in conjunction with the movie’s premiere on Disney Channel (8:00 p.m. EST/PST) and DisneyNOW. 

The “ZOMBIES 2” music spans the cheerleaders’ pop beats, the zombies’ hip-hop flow, and the werewolves’ world beat style in nine original songs and one reprise of the “Zombies” hit “Someday.” Four songs were written by Rock Mafia (the team that wrote and produced the hit “Queen of Mean” for “Descendants 3”). The first single and companion music video, “We Got This,” co-written and produced by Mitch Allan (“Descendants 2”) are available now. “The New Kid in Town” performed by Baby Ariel will be available January 31. The score was composed by George S. Clinton (“ZOMBIES”) and Amit May Cohen (“Wrestling Za’atari” documentary).

Set in the newly united town of Seabrook, “ZOMBIES 2” resumes the story as cheerleader Addison and zombie football player Zed are readying for Seabrook High’s Prawn, the school’s supersized prom. But when a group of mysterious teenage werewolves, led by Willa, Wyatt and Wynter, unexpectedly arrive in search of an ancient life source buried somewhere in Seabrook, a fearful city council reenacts Seabrook’s anti-monster laws making it impossible for Zed and Addison to attend Prawn together. Determined to keep their plan to be the first zombie/cheerleader couple to go to the prom, Zed runs for school president against cheer captain, Bucky, in order to change the rules. While Zed launches into his campaign, Addison is drawn into the werewolves’ circle sensing this might be where she finally fits in. Fearing he might lose Addison to the werewolf pack, Zed sabotages Addison’s effort to find out if she really belongs amongst them. When his deception is revealed and Addison confronts the truth about her identity, zombies, cheerleaders and werewolves all discover the real meaning of community and acceptance.

“ZOMBIES 2” star’s Milo Manheim (ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars”) and actress/recording artist Meg Donnelly (ABC’s “American Housewife”), reprising their singing/dancing/acting roles as star-crossed couple Zed and Addison, whose endearing love story illustrates that being your best self is the truest way to find happiness and belonging.

Also reprising their roles are Trevor Tordjman as Bucky, Kylee Russell as Eliza, Carla Jeffery as Bree, James Godfrey as Bonzo and Kingston Foster as Zoey. Joining the cast are Chandler Kinney as Willa, Pearce Joza as Wyatt and Ariel Martin (Baby Ariel) as Wynter.

Burbank Beer Festival Returns

The Burbank Beer Festival will take over five blocks of Downtown Burbank with two sessions of craft beer sampling, bringing the best of budget-friendly fun, beautiful scenery and delicious brews to the California beer scene. Session 1 will be from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM with Session 2 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. As an added incentive, attendees who book a room at a Burbank hotel will receive two free tickets to the festival.

The ticket sampling sessions will feature tastings of over 85 craft beers on tap from scores of different breweries including: Lagunitas Brewing CompanyGolden Road BrewingRiley’s BrewingMt. Driving up the mountains of Burbank, California, 360 Magazine joined Castaway for their grand re-opening and media tasting. The venue welcomed drinkers and diners for an evening where every guest feels like a Hollywood star. You are greeted by friendly valet and walk past a beautiful waterfall centric landscape before entering one of LA’s hottest new spots. The restaurant offered signature handcrafted cocktails and food for all. Try their sensational vegan platters for mixed balances of savory and sweet. Seafood does not disappoint as the Charred Octopus is cooked to perfection with crispy potato chips, squid ink vinaigrette, and plum tomatoes that have been dehydrated for 24 hours.

Consider a stroll and enjoy the ambiance of the patio and dining area which overlooks the city of Burbank and San Fernando Valley. With a ten million dollar renovation, guests can also regard the collection of wines at the cellar, peak into the butcher’s ground or reserve the chef’s table for a private dining experience. By the way, if you are doing a renovation too but don’t have a big budget, you can install an acrylic splashback as this is the most economical route to transforming your kitchen.

The non-stop service continued as the group sat down and made their own charcuterie board and devoured the entrees. Chefs explained the courses in grave detail, creating a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. Sitting down and hearing from CEO of Specialty Restaurants Corporation, John Tallichet, discussed how much the company is invested in learning about the industry and care about their guests’ experience. Out of the four steaks tried, one of 360’s top picks is the American Wagyu Steak for its succulent and juicy taste. Another show-stopper was the Roasted Tricolor Cauliflower that will have your tongue bouncing with dashes of hazelnut and cinnamon. For dessert, an array of sweets was placed on the table and the Chocolate Lava Cake did not disappoint. Each dessert was individually fabricated from scratch.

DC Entertainment returns to New York Comic Con with an expansive schedule of panels, talent signings and celebrations highlighting DC’s iconic characters, best-selling titles, and the most acclaimed writers and artists in the industry. Taking place Oct. 5-8 at the Jacob Javits Center, DC’s massive booth in the South Concourse (#1915) will be ­­­the epicenter of New York Comic Con for can’t-miss fan activities, along with must-see costumes and props from the highly anticipated Warner Bros. Pictures film Justice League, never-before-seen items from DC Collectibles and more.

New for NYCC 2017, the DC booth will also serve as home base for DC All Access, DC’s original digital series. Friday through Sunday from 3-5 pm ET, DC All Access will bring fans a packed program of live broadcast segments featuring more up-to-the-minute news, exclusives and talent interviews than ever before! Fans can catch all the action live on the DC Entertainment YouTube channel and on the DC Comics Facebook page.

The DC booth will have everything the superhero fan needs to make their convention experience complete; guaranteed to have fans’ cell phone cameras flashing and social media feeds updating all weekend long, the costumes of Wonder Woman, Batman, Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg from the Warner Bros. Pictures film Justice League will be on display.

Nearby in the hall’s Crystal Palace, attendees will find an in-depth sneak peek of the HTC Vive version of the Justice League VR: Join the League – New York Comic Con Edition, a film-themed virtual reality experience. Users will be able to use the HTC Vive’s controllers for an enhanced version of the Super Hero simulations.

Always a huge hit with fans, DC’s popular interactive green screen experience returns to DC’s NYCC booth. Throughout the weekend, fans can take home their own photo souvenir from the DC universe, whether they “get their cape on” with DC Super Hero Girls, celebrate the 25th anniversaries of HARLEY QUINN or Batman: The Animated Series, unite with the cast of Justice League to save the world or explore the terrors of the Dark Multiverse with the evil Batmen of DARK NIGHTS: METAL.

For fans of the smash-hit video game Injustice 2, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment will have demo stations in the booth to test their fighting game prowess. And no convention experience is complete without plenty of giveaway items to fill up that swag bag! DC will provide fans with plenty of free sampler comic books and catalogs, posters, pins, temporary tattoos, masks and more!

New products spotlighting the Justice League film, Batman and DC Super Hero Girls will be seen for the very first time at NYCC, courtesy of Warner Bros. Consumer Products. It’s a sure bet that any fan will want them for their very own, so DC’s giving them a chance to enter a sweepstakes in the booth to win all of the items on display.

DC’s panels will dive into acclaimed new titles, reveal exciting announcements and showcase some of the most celebrated talent in comics:

The official countdown to the most anticipated series in comics kicks off with New York Times best-selling writer Geoff Johns at the DC DOOMSDAY CLOCK panel. Moderated by TIME magazine book critic and celebrated author Lev Grossman (The Magicians), this panel features a rare look at the incredible art from Johns’ longtime collaborator Gary Frank as this 12-issue series brings the DC and Watchmen universes together for the first time. This can’t-miss panel also will reveal pages from the debut issue before it hits shelves on November 22, with Johns and Grossman discussing in depth how it all began. Fans not attending the con will also have the opportunity to learn about what Johns and company have in store, as the panel will be streamed live to the DC YouTube channel and the DC Comics Facebook page. The best-selling team behind DARK NIGHTS: METAL, Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, will share what’s to come in the series currently rocking the industry at the DC Metal/New Age of DC Heroes panel. Joining them will be contributors to the New Age of DC Heroes: writers Steve Orlando, Justin Jordan, Frank Tieri, James Tynion IV, Robert Venditti and Joshua Williamson will discuss not only the secrets of the Dark Multiverse, but some of the all-new heroes spinning out of DARK NIGHTS: METAL, creating even more excitement in the DC Universe! Comics fans will get the singular experience of witnessing group industry legends discuss their newest projects for DC at the DC Master Class panel. Celebrate Milestone Media, the groundbreaking imprint known for diversity and representation, when The Return of Milestone’s Dakota Universe and the Launch of Earth M takes center stage. The panel will include producer/director Reginald Hudlin and Milestone Media’s co-founders Denys Cowan and Derek Dingle, who will discuss the debut of Earth M, along with Kyle Baker, Ken Lashley, Alice Randall, Greg Pak and DC Publisher Jim Lee. Special guest Robert Kirkman will also be on hand to get fans reacquainted with the heroes of the Dakota-verse, with an inside look at an episode of Kirkman’s upcoming AMC documentary series, Robert Kirkman’s Secret History of Comics, spotlighting Milestone and its impact on comic book storytelling. Hollywood/Republic Records Recording Artist Sofia Carson is set to release her latest single “Ins and Outs,” on sale digitally and available for streaming globally tomorrow, Friday, August 25th. Carson’s first ever performance of “Ins and Outs” will be live tonight on the season finale of ABC’s Boy Band.

“Ins and Outs” is written by Julia Michaels, Justin Tranter, and Jason Evigan, and produced by Jason Evigan.

Multi-hyphenate Carson stars as “Evie” in Disney Channel’s global hit Descendants 2, which reached over 26 million Total Viewers in with an unprecedented simultaneous premiere (Friday, July 21) across six networks. The soundtrack debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and the VEVO/YouTube music videos for the franchise have surpassed 1 billion views. Both Descendants soundtracks have over 130 million streams worldwide.

Carson’s past two singles, “Love Is The Name” and “Back To Beautiful” have combined views of over 100 million.
