Jeep Cherokee vs Wrangler: A Comparative Guide

You’re looking to buy a new vehicle; in particular, you’re interested in buying a Jeep. However, you’re wondering: what wins the battle of Jeep Cherokee vs. Wrangler? 

Sure, the Jeep Wrangler has that classic Jeep look, but the Cherokee’s performance is right on par. Not to mention, the Cherokee offers more cargo space. The comparison is close, to say the least. 

Alas, it’s for this reason that we’re going to examine the two in detail below to demonstrate how they measure up. Read on to find out which vehicle is right for you.

Exterior

The exteriors of the Jeep Cherokee and Wrangler have similarities. For instance, their grilles are almost identical. But overall, they’re very different looking vehicles.

The Wrangler has more of a traditional Jeep look. It’s boxy, it’s angular, and it’s risen quite a bit off of its wheels. 

The Cherokee, on the other hand, has more of an SUV look. This is to say that it’s sleeker, more rounded, and sits relatively close to the wheels. 

There’s no clear winner in this department. Aesthetic preferences are primarily subjective, after all. So, give a look at both and see which one fits your preferences. 

Interior

As far as their interiors go, the Cherokee and Wrangler are essentially the same. At their max they provide 5 seats, all of which possess ample head and leg room. Note that the Wrangler comes with a 4-seat model, as well. 

Each vehicle is available with a variety of trims. So, whether you want cloth leather upholstery, you can get either. 

Both vehicles provide ample storage space, along with a variety of storage compartments. We should also note that both have fold down back seats, which allows for even more storage space. 

Suspension

Next, we’ll discuss each vehicle’s suspension. Simply put, the Wrangler’s suspension is better for off-roading than the Cherokee’s. It sits higher, is better equipped to absorb shocks, and can easily handle rough and rocky terrains. 

Now, this isn’t to say that the Cherokee’s suspension can’t handle off-roading. Quite the contrary–in fact; it’s one of the best off-roading SUVs in existence. But if you’re buying a vehicle specifically for off-roading purposes, the Jeep Wrangler is the better option. 

Power

You’re probably curious about each vehicle’s power capabilities. Though they’re available in a variety of trims, each of which has its own capabilities. Overall, the Cherokee is the more powerful vehicle. Its weakest trim still produces up to 293HP, with its most powerful trim reaching an astounding 707 HP. 

In comparison, the Wrangler produces between 260 and 285 HP. This is plenty powerful for most purposes, but falls short overall. Whereas the Cherokee can tow between 3,500 and 7,200 lbs, the Wrangler tows only between 2,000 and 3,500 lbs. 

So, in essence, the Cherokee is more of a towing vehicle. If you’re looking for something to haul a trailer with, opt for the Cherokee over the Wrangler. 

Fuel Efficiency

When it comes to fuel efficiency, both vehicles are relatively comparable. However, the Cherokee is a more fuel-efficient vehicle than the Wrangler. 

The 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee gets 31 miles to the gallon on the highway and 23 miles to the gallon in the city. The 2020 Wrangler gets 29 miles to the gallon on the highway and 22 miles to the gallon in the city. 

These are efficient numbers for both vehicles. Whether you’re traveling long distances or staying close to home, you won’t be burning much gas. 

Safety

Next, we’ll discuss safety. On the whole, both vehicles are quite safe. They were each awarded 4 out of 5 stars by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  

So, while there are vehicles that provide a greater level of safety, these are considered sufficient. 

Note, each is available with a variety of safety features. These include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, lane departure warning, and electronic stability control, to name just a few. 

Warranty

These vehicles’ warranties are similar, but have some nuances. Both come with a 3 year, 36,000-mile standard warranty.

However, the two cars’ powertrain warranties differ. Whereas the Cherokee has a 5 year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty, the Wrangler has a 5 year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. 

Recreation

Perhaps the biggest difference between the Wrangler and the Cherokee is in their recreational capabilities. Whereas the Cherokee is a fairly straightforward SUV with an above-average suspension system, the Wrangler is a vehicle practically designed for recreation. 

Its most notable features are its takeaway roof and removable doors. They can both be taken off as desired, making the vehicle something of a convertible. Whether you need to bundle up for winter or let the sun in during the summertime, a Wrangler will serve you well. 

Price

Both the Cherokee and the Wrangler come in many different trims. These trims are available at a wide variety of prices. The more features you add, the more you can expect to pay. 

For comparison’s sake, let’s discuss the costs of their base trims. The base trim for the 2020 Cherokee MSRPs sits at $25,840. The base trim for the 2020 Wrangler MSRPs totals $28,295. 

Both of these costs are comparable to similar vehicles on the market. So, there’s no reason to let their price dissuade you. 

Jeep Cherokee vs Wrangler: A Battle With No Clear Winner

When it comes to the battle of Jeep Cherokee vs. Wrangler, there is no clear winner. Both vehicles have their fair share of positive attributes, along with a few drawbacks as well. In the end, it’s all about assessing your specific needs and preferences, and then choosing a vehicle that best suits them. 

In any case, owning a Jeep can be quite beneficial. They perform terrifically both on-road and off-road, making them some of the most versatile vehicles in existence.

CHRYSLER PROVIDES MEALS

As previously communicated to the company’s employees from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) CEO Mike Manley, the company is in the process of converting its first plant to produce face masks for donation to first responders and health care workers. The first machinery has been delivered and installed with supply and donation coming on stream in the coming weeks.

FCA is expanding its program of measures to support coronavirus relief efforts, focused on two principal areas: charities providing food services to children and support for a range of technical, logistical and manufacturing programs, such as face mask production.

“There has never been a more important moment to help children and their families with vital needs in our communities than during this time of great uncertainty,” said FCA CEO Mike Manley. 

Food programs for children in our communities
FCA will work in partnership with non-profit organizations and foundations that are providing food to children until schools return to session. Starting immediately, FCA will help provide more than 1 million meals to school-age children in the communities around our principal manufacturing plants in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. The program will then be extended nationwide in the U.S. and to Canada and Mexico, supporting similar relief efforts for kids who would normally access school meal services.

Mobilizing company resources
Following the first actions taken to start face mask production, the company is now investing technical, logistical and manufacturing resources at medical equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE). With the donation of face masks produced by the company starting in the coming weeks, the company will invest to extend that production capacity to other plants and ultimately donate masks to first responders and health care workers across the world. Drawing on experience from the company’s engineering and logistics team in Italy who are assisting a local ventilator manufacturer, FCA is engaged with other companies producing ventilators and other much needed medical equipment and PPE.

“In this time of need, we’ve focused our resources on those actions we can implement quickly and that will have the greatest impact, as we did in Italy as soon as the emergency started,” added Manley.

FCA × COVID-19

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is stepping in to help those at the front line of the coronavirus pandemic by manufacturing and donating more than 1 million protective face masks per month. Production capacity is being installed this week and the company will start manufacturing face masks in the coming weeks with initial distribution across the United States, Canada and Mexico. 
 
The face masks are to be donated by FCA to police, EMTs and firefighters, as well as to workers in hospitals and health care clinics. This action is the first of a multifaceted global program being developed by the company through applying manufacturing, supply chain and engineering expertise to support the global fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
 
Commenting on this initiative, FCA CEO Mike Manley said: “Protecting our first responders and health care workers has never been more important. In addition to the support we are giving to increase the production of ventilators, we canvassed our contacts across the healthcare industry and it was very clear that there is an urgent and critical need for face masks. We’ve marshalled the resources of the FCA Group to focus immediately on installing production capacity for making masks and supporting those most in need on the front line of this pandemic.”  
 
FCA will be working through national, regional and city authorities to ensure that the donated face masks are being directed to the people and facilities in the most immediate need. The company will disclose further actions related to the fight against the coronavirus in the coming days.

The Most Exciting Cars of 2020

2019 proved to be an exciting year for car enthusiasts: we saw a revival of the iconic Toyota Supra, a redesigned Porsche 911 and BMW 3 Series, and a brand new McLaren hypercar in the Senna. Those were all properly exciting, but with the new year well underway, I think it’s only appropriate to start looking forward [insert cheesy 2020 vision joke], so in this article we’ll be taking a look at some of the more important cars set to come out in 2020. This list is not exhaustive, though it includes all the cars that we expect to make a big splash in the industry.           

2021 BMW M3                   

BMW is set to reveal its all new M3 sedan, based on the existing G20 3 series later this year (with sales starting early 2021.) Spy photos and renderings (like the one above) have fans of the brand on the edge of their seats. This is mostly because spy photos have indicated that the 2021 M3 may follow in the 7 series’ footsteps with an absolutely ​massive ​grille that extends from the hood all the way down to the front lip. Yikes. Less worrying, however, is what will be hiding behind that grille, a stronger and doubly turbocharged version of the existing B58 inline six, dubbed the S58. The new M3 will also be the first one ever to offer all-wheel drive. We can be sure that it will drive well, as all M3s do, but here’s hoping it looks okay…               

2021 Ford Bronco                   

Ford is set to debut its new Bronco in spring of this year, and intel so far is pointing toward it being exactly what we expect out of a vehicle wearing a Bronco badge: a boxy, rugged, body-on-frame SUV. As we saw with the recent Supra unveil, bringing back an icon after decades of dormancy is a risky proposition, but it appears that Ford is doing it right.   

2021 Ford Mustang Mach E                                   

Another exciting vehicle from Dearborn is the new Mustang Mach E crossover. Slated for delivery in late 2020, the Mustang Mach E is Ford’s first full-fledged foray into the all-electric segment. It looks good, it will be quick, and it seems to be at least somewhat reasonably priced, though I do have one small gripe with the Mustang Mach E. Did they ​have ​to call it a Mustang? I’m not one to get hung up on the mostly arbitrary sanctity of model names, but this is a bit ridiculous. Aside from styling cues, this vehicle has absolutely nothing in common with the traditional Mustang, and I think it’s something of an affront to the Mustang heritage.                   

2020 Tesla Model Y                           

Tesla is planning to start deliveries of their new crossover, the Model Y, in the summer of this year. The Model Y, as all Teslas are, will be an important car because it will assuredly disrupt sales of its gas-powered competitors in a big way. Tesla’s entrance into a more reasonable price bracket with the Model 3 made quite a splash in the sedan segment, and we can expect the Model Y to do the same in the increasingly hot crossover market.               

2021 Tesla Roadster                       

Another Tesla sure to shake things up, though at a much bigger cost, is the upcoming Roadster. Set to go on sale after the Model Y, the Roadster is a $200,000+ supercar with quite a few big claims to support. Tesla has claimed that the Roadster will do 0-60mph in ​under two seconds​, and will be able to reach speeds in excess of 250mph with seating for four. If it’s as potent as Tesla says it will be, I’m sure Lamborghini, Ferrari and McLaren will be sweating once it hits the streets; though I’m sure those brands have at least a small fanbase unwilling to switch to a supercar that doesn’t make any noise.

2020 Chevrolet Corvette                           

We already know quite a bit about the new C8 Corvette, but since it hasn’t technically hit the streets yet, it still belongs on this list. The C8 is Chevrolet’s first mid-engined Corvette and it marks the biggest transformation of the iconic sports car since its inception in the 1950s. It is still very much a Corvette though, with pushrod V8 power, two seats, and two doors. Dealers are preparing to make deliveries as early as next month, and I can’t wait to see them on the road.               

2021 Mercedes Benz S-Class                   

Representing for the luxury sedan category on our list is the all new 2021 Mercedes Benz S-Class, set to be available for purchase later this year. The S-Class is a staple of the Mercedes brand, but more importantly, it’s a technological leader in the industry. Mercedes tends to debut lots of new tech in their flagship sedan, and other manufacturers often follow suit. With this in mind, the new S-Class is sure to bring with it many new innovations, and induce lots of innovative ripples throughout the industry. 

2021 Land Rover Defender

Arguably the quintessential British 4×4, the Defender has been absent from the US since 1997, because its lack of airbags (and Land Rover’s refusal to engineer their addition) failed to comply with US safety standards. The used market for the Defenders that had already made it stateside has been hot since then, and there was no hint of any new iterations of that classic Landy recently. 

And now, the Defender’s return is imminent. It has a lot of modern updates, but it still retains a fair amount of the rugged, utilitarian styling that gave the original its charm.

2020 Lotus Evija

In the awesome but unobtanium category (for most of us), Lotus is bringing out one of the sexiest, most exciting hypercars we’ve seen in a long time. And… it’s electric. In fact, exciting is sort of an understatement. It’s the most powerful electric car ever, with nearly 2,000 horsepower and a top speed of over 200 miles per hour. Oh, and it charges insanely fast, too—18 minutes to charge 100% (to a very respectable 250-mile range.)

Even the name is pretty exceptional; it’s probably partially a clever riff on the electric vehicle acronym of “EV,” and it also (loosely) means “living” or “breathing” in Hebrew. 

2021 Cadillac Escalade

Because the ‘Sclade is the perennial choice of A-list Hollywood celebs, reality show stars, and ballers everywhere, it has to stay on top of its style game. The 2021 iteration fittingly made its TV debut in commercials alongside Academy Award-winning actress Regina King during the 2020 Oscars.

It’s big (even bigger than before), and bold, adding 7.1 inches in length over the previous model, and a massive grill. Inside, there’s more space, and some serious tech updates to everything from the suspension and transmission to the giant, curved  OLED screen that probably has better image quality than the TV on your wall at home. A diesel engine will also be an option for the first time.

Leading manufacturer of light tactical vehicles, AM General, together with the Jeep Brand of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), today introduced a new light tactical concept vehicle at the Annual Meeting and Exposition of the Association of the U.S. Army (AUSA). The Jeep Gladiator Extreme Military-Grade Truck (XMT) by AM General is the first phase of a collaboration that reunites two companies whose histories trace back to World War II. In creating the Jeep Gladiator XMT, AM General leveraged the Gladiator’s class-leading capabilities and customized the truck to meet global customers’ needs for a light-weight military truck.

AM General identified the all-new 2020 Jeep Gladiator – the most capable midsize truck ever, with 7,650 pounds of towing capacity and up to 1,600 pounds of payload capacity – as the ideal platform on which to develop the Extreme Military-Grade concept vehicle.
