On the heels of his breakout year, Swiss indie rocker Sam Himself – New Yorker by choice,  Fondue Western baritone by trade – prepares to release his debut album, Power Ballads (October 8th). The Brooklyn-based songwriter, performer, and multi-instrumentalist has been sounding the bell for his first LP with a number of singles, most recently “La Paz” and “What Its Worth” which premiered via Under The Radar Magazine and was picked up by KCRWs Morning Becomes Eclectic and KEXPs The Morning Show, among others: as of September 2021, three out of four album singles remain on public and commercial rotation in Germany, France, Switzerland and elsewhere in Europe and the US.

Sam Himself’s full-length debut follows last year’s acclaimed EP Slow Drugs, the artist’s third, which – in addition to the international press, radio airplay, numerous DSP editorial features, and critical praise for the accompanying music videos – earned him the Swiss National Broadcasting Service’s Best Talent Award in 2020 and, in early 2021, a nomination for a Swiss Music Award, the most prestigious national prize of its kind in Sam’s home country.

Power Ballads marks the latest collaboration between Sam and his longtime producer, mixing engineer, and Second Beatle’ Daniel Schlett (The War On Drugs; Iggy Pop), as well as mastering legend Greg Calbi (Bruce Springsteen; David Bowie).

Early last year, Switzerland’s King of Tears Sam Himself was in Europe kicking off his spring tour when the pandemic foiled all live music plans – and Sam’s planned return to Brooklyn, NY, his chosen home of the past decade. Dangerously low on socks, musical equipment, and any real sense of when he’d be able to get back to the United States, Sam ended up staying in his native Switzerland for the remainder of 2020. The singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, exiled at home, spent those months in limbo writing and recording what would become his debut album, Power Balladswherever he could (including the attic of his mom’s house). When he made it back to New York in early 2021, Sam (after a period of self-quarantine) went straight to producer Daniel Schlett’s Strange Weather Studio in Brooklyn to finalize his new material, building on the recordings he had originally prepared as demos for his album.

Two songs on Power Ballads once again feature Sam’s Slow Drugs bandmates Josh Werner (bass – Ghostface Killah; CocoRosie) and Parker Kindred (drums – Jeff Buckley; Elliott Smith), among them the LP’s focus track The Missing. The work of Benjamin Noti (guitar – Steff La Cheffe) and Georg Dillier (bass – Anna Rossinelli), both members of Sam’s touring band, can also be heard on several tracks.

Beyond their contributions, however, Sam plays most of the instruments on Power Ballads himself, with producer Schlett adding sounds, textures and of course his singular mixing style (as heard recently e.g. on Iggy Pop’s cover of The Velvet Underground’s European Son). This reduced lineup, a consequence of the new practical realities of the pandemic, imbues Power Ballads with a sense of intimacy and artistic autonomy. Synths and programmed drums form the core of most of the album’s by turns minimalist and grand arrangements, while Sam’s signature baritone voice quite literally reaches new heights. Over the course of ten tracks, the artist grapples with the sources and limits of personal power – how much of it is taken for granted; what remains once it’s stripped away – unflinchingly honest and defiantly optimistic on his most vulnerable, most confident work to date.

Sam Himself is set to tour in support of his debut album well into the spring of next year, with some 30+ European dates in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, and beyond (US-dates in planning).

Morray × Polo G – Trenches (Remix)

MORRAY RELEASES HIS NEW REMIX OF TRENCHES FEATURING POLO G

WATCH TRENCHES (REMIX) FT. POLO G: HERE

BUY/STREAM TRENCHES (REMIX) FT. POLO G: HERE

‘Trenches’, from an album due next week titled Street Sermons, rides the minor chords and trap beats that often accompany antisocial boasts. But while ‘Trenches’ doesn’t ignore gangs, drugs or poverty, Morray also recognizes a community that holds families, neighbors and friends – The New York Times

Few crooning rappers have his polish, resonance, and soul. – SPIN

With only four songs on streaming platforms—all released in 2020—Fayetteville, North Carolina rapper Morray has already proven he’s a hitmaker. His debut single ‘Quicksand’ is undeniable, anchored by the type of hook you get from a Roddy Ricch or Rod Wave song and infused with storytelling and charisma to paint a picture even if you’re unfamiliar with the newcomer. – Pigeons & Planes

Fresh Off His First-Ever Performance at Rolling Loud, the 2021 XXL Freshman Recruits a Kindred Spirit to Add a Verse to a Street Sermons Highlight

Morray’s emotional singing and empathetic lyrics make him an ideal avatar for those struggling in the streets, and an excellent role model for those looking to make it out. His song Trenches is an ode to people who think they are out of options, urging them to stay positive through the pain. Today, the Fayetteville, NC native shares Trenches (Remix), which adds a verse from Polo G, another street storyteller whose lyrics speak for the less fortunate. The new remix juxtaposes Morray’s gospel-influenced passion with Polo’s plaintive and conversational melodies, the younger rapper spinning a succinct 16 about his rise from tragedy to triumph: Member I was f*cked up, now my foreign in the hood parked/You can beat the system if you street and booksmart, intones Polo G.

Directed by Justice Silvera, the video follows the story of a man who works hard every day to put food on his family’s plates, resisting the clarion call of street life so he can be present for his wife and young daughter. Morray and Polo G provide the perspective of those who’ve escaped their past hardship, but their lyrics prove that men like the video’s protagonist deserve just as much respect as any rap star. Trenches (Remix) is the latest in a long line of quality videos from Morray, most recently the video for Mistakes, a highlight from his debut album Street Sermons.

Debuting at  #41 on the Billboard 200 and propelling Morray to #1 on Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart, Street Sermons taps into the spiritual uplift and church-trained singing that makes Morray’s brand of hip-hop so unique, taking unflinching looks at the Fayetteville native’s youthful struggles and indiscretions and examining his motivations to succeed. Home to his breakout single Quicksand, which recently earned a GOLD certification from the RIAA and surpassed the 100 million view milestone on YouTube, the project contains universal truths about the tragedies and triumphs of growing up in the hood, filtered through Morray’s experience as a neighborhood kid made good. Complex ranked Street Sermons at #10 on their list of Best Albums of 2021 So Far.

Earlier this summer, Morray earned a position on the coveted XXL Freshman list for 2021. The honor is the latest in a long line of accolades, including one to watch designations from Complex, Billboard, SPIN, Pigeons & Planes, and many more. An engaging live performer, as evidenced by his recent appearance on JImmy Kimmel Live, Morray was highlighted by Rolling Stone as the Best Debut performer at last weekend’s Rolling Loud Festival in Miami.

With Street Sermons and his newfound position as a XXL Freshman, Morray culminates his meteoric rise and proves that he’s ready to build an artistic legacy and a nest egg for his wife and kids. For an artist with Morray’s talent, the sky’s the limit.

AZRA shares her upbeat and introspective new single, Solo. An anthem for independence, “Solo” celebrates not only self-empowerment, but also the journey we take to realize the powers that bind us and to break ourselves free from them.

“The process of creating this song was a mix of introspection and genuinely connecting with my listeners (aka Azradeities) about their own struggles in living their truth, finding self-worth, and dealing with societal expectations in the midst of all the external pressures,” shares AZRA“It’s an empowerment song claiming that we own our individuality and path through our lives.”

Seinabo Sey – Sweet Life EP

SWEET LIFE, SEINABO SEY’S NEW EP, IS OUT TODAY, Listen To New Single Rom-Com HERE, Combined Global Streams Of Sey’s Songs Surpass One Billion

Seinabo Sey returns with the four-song EP Sweet Life, her first new music since 2018’s I’m a Dream. Released today by Capitol Records, Sweet Life is available for download / streaming HERE. See below for track listing.

Today, Sey shared the breezy single Rom-Com (feat. Hannes). Trading off on the verses, they trace the story of two people who want to fall in love but are held back by their fears. Listen to Rom-Com HERE. Hannes, who opened for Sey at Sweden’s Way Out Festival, debuted his intriguing blend of pop, soul, jazz and R&B with the single I Went to The Jungle.

Sey, who rose to prominence in 2015 following the release of two EPs and her debut album, Pretend, which TIME magazine called One of the Year’s Best Debut Albums, has amassed over one billion combined global streams to date. Kygo’s remix of Younger, from Pretend, climbed to No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play chart. Sey’s 2018 follow-up album, I’m a Dream contained the singles I Owe You Nothing and Remember (featuring Jacob Banks).

The boundary-blurring artist has won four Swedish GRAMMY awards and topped the HypeMachine chart five times. In the beginning of 2020, Sey had just started touring as opening act for Ms. Lauryn Hill when Covid-19 struck. Sey spent the pandemic crafting an EP that ferries listeners to a place of peace.

I wanted to create a world that was like TLC’s ‘Waterfalls,’ just a little paradise for Black girls, where everything’s okay and nothing is a problem, Seinabo Sey explains. We’re all like lounging, eating fruits or something. The scene she describes is not dissimilar to the conditions in which she crafted her new EP, quarantining on the island of Gotland, off the coast of Sweden.

On Blue, she sings about accepting her circumstances, gaining a reverence for herself and a slower pace of life as she connects with different surroundings. Treetops over these white rocks tell me go slow baby, slow/ real life tells me to stand up I be like no, baby, no, she sings. I’m Just Mad (Bitch) is a defiant anthem where the singer stays strong in the face of a breakup. The EP’s closing track, Sweet Dreams, is an ode to her pandemic state of mind, reflective and focused on achieving her goals amid the chaos happening elsewhere.

She says there’s a vibe of friendship running through this record. The bold cover art is the name of the EP braided into her hair by one of her oldest friends. Meanwhile, she entrusted one of her other best friends, Isaac, to write four demos for the EP, which is a marked departure from her typically self-penned projects.

There are a million different ways of doing things and I’ve tried a few, but this is really my way of creating music, she says. I have wanted to do that since I was a kid. I started off with playing in bands where you always kind of create things together. So that’s been a very major difference for me this time around.

Track Listing – Sweet Life

  2. Rom-Com

Christen Lien – Phoenix Rising

CONTEMPORARY CLASSICAL MUSICIAN CHRISTEN LIEN ANNOUNCES EXCLUSIVE CLUBHOUSE PERFORMANCE PHOENIX RISING: A JOURNEY OF LIVE MUSIC + POETRY BY ESMÉ  BIANCO, Thursday, May 27 @ 4pm ET / 1pm PT: Cosmic Balcony Club, JOIN HERE

Previous Clubhouse performances attended by thousands, including the platform’s founder, also performed for the Dalai Lama, hosted a TED talk, played Burning Man, and headlined shows

Watch Christen Lien’s official video for The Escape here

Christen Lien is a contemporary classical musician who creates stunning, emotional work based around the viola and use of loop and effects pedals. She has performed for the Dalai Lama, hosted a TED talk, and played Burning Man in addition to her own headline shows. During the pandemic, Christen has become a regular performer on Clubhouse, and has played to several thousands of fans on a weekly basis. CH founder Paul Davison joined the stage during her rooms, bringing nearly two and a half thousand followers with him, to listen to her perform.

Her regular Clubhouse room, Cosmic Balcony, has become very popular and recently she completed 33 straight days of full concerts at 3:33pm PT. On the last day, after four hours of songs, readings, collaborations and community shares, there were exactly 333 people in the room. Known for the emotional intensity, philosophical deep dives and widely diverse mix of club members, Cosmic Balcony is an experience of creative perspective that’s both interactive and multi-disciplinary.

This week, the balcony welcomes Esmé Bianco (Game of Thrones, co-creator of the Phoenix Act) to share and perform her poetry in this world premiere event with live viola by Christen Lien and guest poet Steve Connell. Join here on May 27 at 4pm ET / 1 pm PT.

On the upcoming event, Christen Lien says, In my Cosmic Balcony rooms on Clubhouse, we address deep and complex issues as a community while I perform live music for the audience, and our event on May 27th will be an example of the courage I witness often in these rooms. The public has heard of the harrowing tale of Esmé Bianco’s past, and now it’s time to move forward and witness her creative prowess and expression during her healing process. It is time for all of us to move forward and heal from the past with courage, creativity and community. It is a privilege to host the world premiere of Esmé’s poetry, and provide live music for such a historic moment in time.

Esmé Bianco says, In celebration of my birthday, and at a time of personal transformation and reemergence for so many of us, I am delighted to be sharing my poetry publicly for the first time in Cosmic Balcony. It is an honor to collaborate with the exceptionally talented Christen Lien as we explore what it means to rise from the ashes together.

Many collaborations are born out of these Clubhouse moments. Lien has recently rounded out the Clubhouse International Womenߣs Day event (CHIxIWD), performed for Hatch: She Who Inspires, showcasing women leaders. She also teamed up with Sarah Alagroobi for an art installation for Art Dubai after Alagroobi spontaneously began painting on hearing Lien perform, creating a work in response to that performance, a testament to the unique creative environment that Clubhouse can engender. Lien performed as part of the recording process for this work, with Alagroobi completing the painting. Lien has also joined Terra Naomi, Savannah Outen and Autumn Nicholas for the Monday Monday showcase on Clubhouse, in conjunction with LAߣs revered Hotel Cafe, among many other connections.

Christen Lien says: It’s been very fulfilling to perform live on Clubhouse, because the real-time responses from listeners via voice creates an intimacy that is different from live stream chat boxes on other platforms. The audience responses have been similar to my in-person concerts: a flurry of emotions and tears, people experiencing intense visuals while they listen to my performance, and an urge to co-create. The only difference is the audience can’t see how much my body moves when I make music, and they don’t see the technical use of my looping pedals and effect boards. I’m so happy that my music translates on the Clubhouse platform, because I know that my music creates a space for a lot of healing and emotional processing. The times we are in are difficult and my music has always been a salve for aching hearts. It means so much that I can be there for a live audience in this way and we are all grateful to Clubhouse for making this possible.

Be sure to tune in on Clubhouse on May 27 to get in on the live moments that continue to inspire and provoke emotional responses from devoted fans, and look out for more from Christen Lien.

Christen Lien is an avant-garde composer and performing artist with classical roots who creates an innovative brand of musical storytelling. The viola is at the heart of her music-making; however, she also incorporates multiple instruments and synthesizers, and the use of guitar effect processors and looping pedals, to create a multi-faceted landscape that bridges electronic, industrial and classical genres.

Her multimedia performances communicate stories of mythology and imagination, politics and prose, hope and empowerment.

Christen has performed for diplomats, fortune 100 executives, heads of state, royalty, celebrities, and has inspired many crowds around the globe. She has performed for His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Google, the Obama White House, Burning Man, Forbes Under 30 Summit, Berklee College of Music, Nexus Global, MIT and the United States Institute of Peace. Venues such as the House of Blues and the REDCAT Theatre and museums such as the de Young, Legion of Honor and the Detroit Institute of Arts have showcased her live performances. Christen’s sound design work is on exhibit at the National Museum of Qatar, where she created sound design for a 50-foot video installation by John Sanborn, commissioned by the Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and the Doha Film Institute.

Her concept album ELPIS continues a long-lost story of Greek mythology and is a cautionary tale about the spectrum of hope. The album and story was adapted into a ballet production with acclaimed choreographer Amy Seiwert, where dancers were choreographed to both Christen’s live musical performance and storytelling.

Christen is an active citizen who stands up for her beliefs. While serving as the Executive Director of the Ann Arbor Film Festival, Christen won a First Amendment lawsuit against the State of Michigan to protect artists’ freedom of speech.

Amy Winehouse at the BBC

“I remember the first time hearing her voice…I instantly knew she was destined to be one of the greatest.” – NAS

“Jools loved Amy straight away – her honesty as a vocalist, songwriter, and Londoner…Britain has produced a lot of brilliant female singer-songwriters and vocalists in the last decade or so, many from Beth Gibbons to Adele, rooted in older black American forms, soul and jazz, and blues. But there was only ever one Amy Winehouse. She was frank and fresh and haunted. And we miss her.” – Mark Cooper BBC

Amy Winehouse At The BBC, a 3LP/3CD collection chronicling the many remarkable performances by arguably the greatest and most genuine talent to emerge in British music in decades, will be released on May 7, 2021, through Island/UMe. For the very first time, this updated release offers audio-only versions of the songs featured on ‘A Tribute to Amy Winehouse by Jools Holland’ and the ‘BBC One Sessions Live at Porchester Hall,’ and so a high proportion of these tracks will be completely new to digital music services. “Stronger Than Me,” “Tears Dry on Their Own” and “You Know I’m No Good” will be available on March 24 on streaming services, and the video for “Stronger Than Me” will be available on YouTube. This comprehensive collection captures the strong and enduring relationship that Amy enjoyed with the BBC and is further proof of quite what an extraordinarily talented, completely original, and truly engaging performer Amy was.

Amy Winehouse At The BBC includes Amy’s earliest BBC Radio sessions, music from her first-ever TV performances, as well as unheard gems, rarities, unique covers, and live versions of classic songs from “Frank” and “Back to Black.” The set also includes a beautifully illustrated 20-page booklet featuring rare photographs.

Disc 1 is a selection of recordings chosen by Later presenter, songwriter, and much-loved musician Jools Holland. Disc 2 is a 14-song audio selection dating from 2004 to 2009, while Disc 3 features the performances from Amy’s memorable Porchester Hall sessions. Like Amy’s three previous albums, this collection will prove, once more, a fitting tribute to her peerless artistry, phenomenal talent, and extraordinary powers as a songwriter, a singer, and an interpreter of classics.

After being featured on ESPN’s UFC 257 creative for the last month, Eminem will debut his new music video for “Higher” during ESPN’s UFC 257 Countdown: Poirier vs. McGregor 2 at 2 p.m. ET this Saturday, January 23 on ABC. The video will also re-air on ESPN just prior to Saturday’s main event.

The song comes from the latest Eminem release, Music To Be Murdered By – Side B (Shady Records/Aftermath Entertainment/Interscope Records), which was released on December 18, 2020 and is the expanded edition of Music To Be Murdered By, his 11th studio album released January 17, 2020. The music video prominently features footage from ESPN’s UFC coverage and centers around Eminem inhabiting roles as both a musician and a world-class athlete, drawing allusions between the way a musician creates and prepares to perform and how an athlete trains and prepares for competition. The video, featuring cameos from Dana White and ESPN’s Michael Eaves, will revolve around Eminem’s most important battle: the one against his own demons.

“We have always been interested in fostering the synergy between music and sports and along with ESPN we have created many great moments together,” says David Nieman, VP, Sports and Gaming for Interscope Geffen A&M. “Working together to amplify Eminem’s artistic vision in such a unique way for this highly anticipated UFC event is absolutely a high point.”

“It’s always been amazing to be able to work with Eminem for promotional and programming content on various ESPN properties over the years,” said Kevin Wilson, ESPN music director. “To be able to work on this video together with his team – not only featuring our team’s great UFC coverage but also debuting it exclusively on ABC, is just invaluable.”

Eminem has been featured in a number of promotional and programming content for ESPN recently, including UFC 248, UFC 246, a spot with a custom remix and the tease for this year’s College Football Playoff National Championship, featuring him narrating the introduction and more.

Chivea Brown

Chivea Brown

Pioneering artist, Chivea Brown, is originally from Jamaica. From when he was very young, he’s been pursuing his dream of becoming a foundational Dj, but he had to put his career on pause because he didn’t have a producer to work with. In fact, most of the producers he knows were demanding too much money and he couldn’t meet ends meat. However, life is working in favor of his pinnacle because of his Nephew “Rash”; he’s the one who’s responsible for all of his productions. Rash may not have the most experience, but together they’re growing as a team, making records very professionally and timely.

Concerning his focus, Chivea’s objective genre is “dancehall,” but don’t be surprised if there’s a crossover to other genres occasionally. He’s open to working with anyone who’s vibrating on the same energy field as he is. Chivea is willing to collaborate with others across the world so he and others can enjoy doing what they do best and earn a living simultaneously.
