NOSACONN

New Orleans South Africa Connection, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) not- for-profi¬t organization promoting music, art, culture, film, trade, and arts in education for economic development and tourism between the USA and Africa.

NOSACONN was founded by Damon J. Batiste in 1998, it is a non-profit organization, comprised of business, civic, community, and entertainment industry leaders, both in New Orleans and South Africa. This unique partnership has facilitated the production special of events in the City of New Orleans and the Republic of South Africa, concurrently, for the past three years.

These activities have allowed NOSACONN to serve as a pioneer in presenting art, culture, and tourism as a forefront of economic development. It has recognized the field of arts, culture, and education on a local, regional, and international level as a tremendous networking tool for job creation, tourism, and self-empowerment. It has also served as an incubator for economic sustainability.

Over the past five years, NOSACONN has produced outdoor concerts, educational workshops, empowerment seminars, business expositions, and youth enhancement programs. Since its inception, the Organization has employed over 250 people; and has been instrumental in mentoring youth in the local school system in New Orleans. NOSACONN, through the Arts in Education Initiative, will be largely responsible for delivering and / or coordinating the delivery of the content associated with the Entrepreneurship, Science, Technology, English, Arts, and Mathematics components of the LET’S TEAM program. This will be done in partnership with local schools and tertiary institutions, as well as with other stakeholders.

LET’S TEAM is a partnership initiative between the New Orleans South Africa Connection (NOSACONN) based in New Orleans, and Equilibrium Coaching Academy based in Johannesburg. This joint venture seeks to equip young people in schools, tertiary education institutions, and in communities and workplaces with a range of knowledge, skills, systems, and tools to assist them in becoming all they can be — personally and professionally.

The key here is to specifically increase awareness, interest, and capability amongst Black youths — and especially young Black females — in careers in various art forms, either as employees or entrepreneurs. As members of the Millennials or Generation Y cohort, young people are perfectly poised to integrate the advances of 21st century technology with time-tested learning and thinking systems to escalate productivity and performance in their studies, their jobs, and their lives. The LET’S TEAM program is the ideal vehicle to advance this.

Experience has revealed that most students learn for the next test or exam — and that many are barely able to recall even a fraction of what they learned mere days later. For those whose families can afford to, private tuition has become the go-to crutch that helps them get that ‘grade’. All it does really is teach ‘learned helplessness’, rather than prepare young people to navigate the challenges in their lives ahead. What they need are more exciting, engaging ways of learning; knowing how to ‘think’ their way out of the challenges that life throws at them; and navigating their respective and collective journeys in becoming valuable members of their communities and citizens of the world. LET’S TEAM helps our young people to be just that.

EQUILIBRIUM COACHING ACADEMY:

Equilibrium is led by Pravienna Naidoo and Tshenolo Motlhala, two highly-trained and committed individuals whose life mission is to facilitate the development and growth of young people through four key areas of intervention in the LET’S TEAM program: Academic Life Coaching; Accelerated Learning; Effective Thinking; and Total Wellbeing.

LETS TEAM: TIMINGS AND METHODOLOGY
The LET’S TEAM program is best delivered in weekly sessions, face-to-face with participants, allowing for the most valuable learning experience; providing time for application, review, and alignment between sessions. The three-month program can be delivered as a self-study, video based program as an alternative to face-to-face learning; enabling coverage to a larger number of learners — at a fraction of the cost.

NOSACONN has made a substantial cultural impact over the years. A few of the many are:

– NOSACONN enters into partnership with the United Way of Southeast Louisiana to establish the Creative Industries and Cultural Exchange Center in February 2013. The center will generate and sustain long-term growth in the creative industries through the investment in and educational enrichment of the youth of New Orleans, by providing a 21st century platform for the exchange of global digital media and culture.

– NOSACONN selected to participate in two national pilots; The White House Initiative on Turnaround Arts and The After school Corporation (TASC), providing after school and summer programming to help turnaround low-performing schools in underserved areas in 2012.

– NOSACONN expanded to France by partnering with the US Embassy in France to focus on Arts Integration and Education in November 2012.

– MOU Signing of NOSACONN & National Heritage Council of South Africa to further promote international synergy in the arts between USA & South Africa during World Cup 2010 in Johannesburg

MISSION STATEMENT

– Advocate for international cultural tourism stimulation for economic development
– Promote cultural development throughout the disaster recovery efforts in Louisiana
– Host more events with South African Ambassadors in Partnership with World Trade Center than any other organization in the city since 2004

NOSACONN remains committed to it’s international culture exchange mission with the African continent
which has been instrumental in forging alliances between New Orleans icons and South Africa since 1999

TRUCK NIGHT IN AMERICA

It’s truck versus terrain, as 50 truck owners from across the United States compete in grueling challenges that test their ingenuity and driving ability in HISTORY’s new ten episode nonfiction competition series, “Truck Night in America” premiering on Thursday, March 8 at 10PM ET/PT. With the assistance of four experts, owners will compete for the chance to drive the toughest, most arduous truck obstacle course ever built, and drive away with $10,000 prize.

“Trucks have a true place in American history, both past and present, and as the most widely sold vehicle with 133 million currently on U.S. roads there is an appetite for this genre of programing,” said Eli Lehrer, Executive Vice President of Programming, HISTORY. “Since 1925 when the first American factory-produced truck rolled off the line, owners have been devising ingenious ways to make them faster, stronger and better and this can be seen with the tough competitors in our new series.”

Each episode of this self-contained competition series features five drivers in their personal customized trucks and jeeps going head to head in three challenges, each testing a different vehicle attribute: speed, strength and handling. Between each challenge competitors demonstrate their craftsmanship by re-engineering their trucks for the next round. The last two finalists standing then take on a three-mile, truck killing obstacle course known as “The Green Hell,” which challenges trucks and drivers to fly off jumps, climb a mountain of crushed cars, and tear through a snake-infested swamp. Five trucks will enter to compete, but only one can win and take home the prize money and the title of “Truck Night Champion.”

Helping the competitors are four expert coaches: desert racing champion and track builder, “Pistol” Pete Sohren; extreme sports pioneer and dirt track racer, Glen Plake; truck builder and master fabricator, Abe Wine and rock crawling champion and master fabricator, Rob “Bender” Park. These four experts offer tough love and their professional perspective on each contender’s strategy and performance.

“Truck Night In America” is produced for HISTORY by 51 Minds. Christian Sarabia and James Patrick Costello II are executive producers for 51 Minds. Bert Klasey, Mike Stiller, Dolores Gavin and Mary Donahue are the executive producers for HISTORY.

A+E Networks holds worldwide distribution rights for “Truck Night In America.”

Benjamin Millepied and Thom Yorke Premiere Experimental Film

In the lead up to New York Fashion Week, a-List celebrities gather as rag & bone showcases its SS18 collection in “Why Can’t We Get Along?;” an eclectic visual experiment starring Ansel Elgort and Kate Mara. The film will be premiered  February 1st at the Metrograph Theater in New York City.

There has been much anticipation for the launch of the short film, marking CEO Marcus Wainwright’s official move away from the traditional NYFW catwalk, as all clothing worn in the film is from the rag & bone SS18 collection, which is due to hit stores in February 2018.

The new short film, shot in one day, features a mix of talent from the worlds of cinematography, music, choreography, dance, and film. Alongside Elgort and Mara, rag & bone tapped eight members of the American Ballet Theater, three HipLet Ballerinas, YouTube sensation Kandi Reign, and three members of Bulletrun Parkour.

Co-directed by Benjamin Millepied, Aaron Duffy and Bob Partington, alongside the celebrated cinematographer Darius Khondji, with their debut film, rag & bone have set out to pave the way for the future of the fashion industry, demonstrating the next evolution of the fashion show.

The film acts as a visual experiment and a metaphor which illustrates how seeing the world from different perspectives can often be difficult. The glitchy track overlay, produced exclusively for rag & bone by Radiohead’s Thom Yorke extends the uneasy feeling of friction that is paralleled by the movement of the actors and dancers.

“Why Can’t We Get Along” will be released on rag-bone.com on February 6th, 2018, whilst the rigs used to capture it will be exhibited by Special Guest at 107 Norfolk Street, New York, NY on Saturday, February 10.

Doron Levin weighing in on President Trump’s comments

SiriusXM host Doron Levin weighing in on President Trump’s comments – during his State of the Union address – on Detroit and the auto industry.

AUDIO: http://soundcloud.com/siriusxm-news-issues/doron-talks-sotu

“…State of the Union message from President Donald Trump and he did take the time to make a shout out to Detroit and to the auto industry.

I think we should talk about it because he did say in his speech that because of him the country was building and expanding auto plants, something that we haven’t seen in decades. That was one of his assertions.

He also said that very soon auto plants were going to be opening all over because of him.

With the President you always have to fact-check what he said. Afterwards he said that this was the biggest audience that had ever heard a State of the Union address and, of course, that wasn’t true but, we have to fact-check this stuff about the auto industry too. It turns out that while he does want to take credit for this there’s some good and there’s some bad.

The good is that it is true that we have had a big boom in the stock market and in personal wealth since he came into office. I don’t how much that can hang on him but it’s going to be that we can buy more cars, probably.

And that people are feeling optimistic and that’s going to be very good for the car makers. And I love it when the car makers are doing well because it means they can invest more in new models and we can get more features. And the whole mobility scene gets better because people are feeling confident and buying new vehicles so, that’s very good news.

As far as the assertion, that we’re now going to have a bunch of new car plants because of him let’s look at that.

In the last 20 years, and this is mostly when he’s not been President, global car makers have actually invested 75 billion dollars in the United States. What we need to understand is that the United States is a very good place to not only to build vehicles but also to export vehicles that’s because this is a very profitable market, it’s because we have very favorable trade agreements and I hope that doesn’t get messed up with the North American Free Trade Agreement being renegotiated in a way that isn’t advantageous to us. President Trump has said that he’s going to re-negotiate that and that has to be done carefully because that has worked out for us.

We have a new Volvo plant coming soon to South Carolina; a new Mercedes Benz plant in Alabama; we have additions coming to the BMW plant in South Carolina; Toyota and Mazda are going to build a new plant in Alabama; and even Chrysler is going to bring back some of its truck production from Mexico to Michigan, which is good news for the UAW and good news for the Michigan economy.

So, yes, the place is great for building vehicles and I think the Presdient was right to highlight that stuff but, we can’t say that it’s basically because of him. It’s been happening, actually a trend, a long-term trend, long before he even announced he was going to run for President so, let’s put that in some kind of perspective.

The important thing about this truck deal that Chrysler has now in Michigan is that it’s really being done as a hedge against the possibility that trade agreements that made it advantageous to build trucks in Mexico and bring them back to the United States may change. And if that changes then Chrysler needs to be building those trucks in the United States and it’s important for the administration not to mess up trade rules.

Now, I know a lot of you tune in to this show to hear about cars but, part of hearing about cars is also hearing about how they’re built, where they’re built, why they’re exported to where they are, and why they’re imported to where they are and a lot of that has to do with the trade rules. So, we look forward to all of that being negotiated in a way that’s advantegous to us in the United States and I think that that’s going to happen.

I don’t foresee that the North American Free Trade Agreement or some of the other agreements that allow cars and trucks to be built in Canada, United States, and Mexico and parts built in those places that allow them to go across the borders more or less without tariff I don’t foresee that changing. One thing that might happen, that the administration may do, and this is why no one really wants to contradict the President on this and get him upset, is a rethinking of some of the stricter fuel-efficiency rules and that could mean that we could see, soon, a relaxation which the auto makers would like, because they don’t want to bring in electric vehicles more quickly than people actually want to drive them.”

SiriusXM’s “In The Driver’s Seat with Doron Levin” airs every Saturday at 12:00pm ET on SiriusXM Insight channel 121.
