Fire in Little Africa

Fire in Little Africa, a groundbreaking album of original material, written and recorded by a collective of Oklahoma hip hop artists to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre releases “Shining” today along with a striking visual. It is the first single from the album that will be released on May 28 by Motown Records/Black Forum in partnership with Tulsa’s Bob Dylan Center and Woody Guthrie Center. “Shining” was produced by Executive Producer Dr. View and features Tulsa area artists Steph Simon, Dialtone, Ayilla and Jerica Wortham. The video was produced and directed by Boomintree Films with Assistant Director avitiuh.

Giving context to the video, Dr. View shares,”’Shining’ is a trip back in time to Tulsa in 1920, just before Black Wall Street was attacked, bombed and burned to the ground in the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. The video conveys the peak of Black Excellence that defined the Greenwood district 100 years ago and ties it to the Fire in Little Africa movement that is showing the world how Tulsa still shines today.” He continues, “We know that the story of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre is one filled with pain, darkness and trauma for Black people, but the story of Tulsa in 2021 is about the greatness that rose from the ashes. “Shining” humanizes the victims of the Tulsa Race Massacre, taking them out of the history books and showing them on a night on the town living life joyfully. That is what Greenwood was, is, and will always be about.”

ABOUT FIRE IN LITTLE AFRICA

The 21-track collection gets to the truth of what happened on May 31 and June 1, 1921 when a white mob descended on the streets of Greenwood, then a prosperous Tulsa neighborhood known as Black Wall Street, and burned down the business district, destroying roughly 1,500 homes, killing hundreds, and leaving thousands of Black Tulsans homeless. For years, this historic, albeit dire, chapter was left out of classrooms and textbooks as the city attempted to erase this part of its past. The artists heard on Fire in Little Africa get to the truth through urgent songs, recalling stories told and stories lived in hope to usher in a new era for Tulsa as they help the community process this generational trauma through music.

In this feature, Rolling Stones noted, Fire in Little Africa is poised to teach the world about that long-suppressed history, from locals who grew up in a community that still lives with the aftermath of the massacre. Just as important, the artists involved in the project also hope it serves as a launching-pad moment for Tulsa’s hip-hop scene, which has long flown under the national radar

The album was recorded in Greenwood over a five-day period in March 2020. Studios were set up at the Greenwood Cultural Center and other locations, including the former home of 1921 massacre mastermind/KKK leader Tate Brady. The house is now owned by former NFL first-round draft pick and Tulsa native Felix Jones. The Tulsa World was on hand to speak with the artists involved in the historic sessions. Located in the Tulsa Arts District, the Woody Guthrie Center opened in 2013. The Bob Dylan Center is expected to open on the same block within the next year. Both are projects of the George Kaiser Family Foundation, the primary funder for Fire in Little Africa. The album is chronicled in a documentary film, which will be released later this year.

Fire in Little Africa marks the first new material released by Black Forum since the label’s relaunch earlier this year. Black Forum originally debuted in 1970 with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Why I Oppose The War In Vietnam, which won a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album. The label reissued Dr. King’s influential speech earlier this year.

Songs to Save Them All

Emmylou Harris, Two Feet, SYML, Wrabel and more to perform in “Songs to Save Them All” livestream concert on May 6 to benefit Best Friends Animal Society

Numerous musicians are set to appear in “Songs to Save Them All: A Benefit Concert for Homeless Pets,” a three-hour benefit concert for Best Friends Animal Society streaming on May 6, 8 PM ET/5 PM PT.

The free event will livestream on Tiltify, Twitch, YouTube and Facebook, as well as at Best Friends website. Viewers will have the opportunity to donate to Best Friends Animal Society via Tiltify to support making America no-kill by 2025. 

All proceeds will support Best Friends’ work across the country, including lifesaving collaboration with thousands of shelters and animal welfare groups.  There will also be a spotlight on the organization’s recent No-Kill Los Angeles initiative achievement, which reached a 90.49% save rate in the City of Los Angeles for 2020.  

“Everyone at Best Friends sends our gratitude to the musicians, singers, and songwriters who are sharing their time and talent for this awesome event,” Castle said. “We hope animal lovers everywhere will tune in, enjoy the music, and learn more about how everyone can make a different for homeless pets.”

The Don’t Block Your Blessings Festival

Out of loss and adversity emerges an uplifting global project and festival, led by Erez Safar (who produces under the name h2the), in honor of his late mother, “Frida Levona bat Shalom”.

“I lost my mom to cancer two months ago,” Safar shared, “and the pain was so intense, I knew I had to do something with it. My mom had an incredible light inside her and navigated the world with hope and positivity. I realized the best way to honor her memory would be to turn that pain and darkness I was feeling into a light that I could share with others. So I put together this project called ‘Don’t Block Your Blessings’ (DBYB), and I hope it can become a space for people to share wisdom for leading better, happier lives.”  

Safar comes off as warm, playful, and relaxed as he speaks with me over video chat, from his LA apartment. He tells me he looks at the DBYB platform as a form of “Cheat Codes To Happiness,” where people can trade stories as they navigate the ups and downs of life, and share how they have been able to bring more blessings into their lives via perspective, faith and gratitude. In addition to live-stream festivals (the next of which will take place this month), the project also lives on the site here, as well as an active discussion and healing space on the new and wildly popular mobile app, Clubhouse. 

Don’t Block Your Blessings (DBYB) first launched two months ago, with a one of a kind live-stream festival by the same name, featuring musicians, artists, and some of the most innovative minds in self-growth and healing. The DBYB Festival is hosted on an exclusive virtual platform, which boasts three interactive rooms and allows festival-goers to easily move from room to room, as then explore various talks, musical performances, and the creation of visual art, live in real-time.

This is not the first time Safar has wowed with his creative approach to online events. His first live-stream festival, Lo-Freq Fest, was featured in Billboard and shared around the globe. The debut DBYB festival featured over 40+ world-wide presenters with 25,774 viewers.

The next festival will be free to attend virtually and is set to take place on Valentine’s (Sunday, February 14th), between 6-9 pm PST.

The festival will feature contemporary artists, musicians, and teachers in the fields of self-growth and healing. Presenters include: 

Alicia Dunams

The founder of Bestseller in a Weekend, Dunams has helped more than 1500 leaders write books. She is also a leadership trainer, executive coach and certified peacemaker. She will be presenting in the healing room “The Slippery Slope vs. The Conscious Climb – Managing Our Unconscious Bias.”

Dr. Aparajita (AJ)

A social psychologist, a diversity and inclusion consultant, a certified life and executive coach, an author, a speaker, an immigrant, and a two-time traumatic brain injury survivor. She will be presenting in the healing room “Making Your Invisible Visible for Happiness.”

The Boom Bap Kids

Purveyors of funk and hip hop, founders Woes Martin, Silent John, and Mike Steel will be bringing their fabric puppetry and beats to the festival.

Shantala

Founders Benjy and Heather Wertheimer have been leading kirtan (sacred chanting) worldwide since 2001. They are known for their special gift of bringing audiences into a vast and loving experience through their unique blend of exquisite voices accompanied by instruments of India and the west. In 2020 alone, their music has garnered over 14 million streams.

Bomani X

The face of Clubhouse and the host of its #CottonClub, Bomani X is an artist in every sense of the word, a guitarist, singer songwriter, and a celebrity digital strategist who has worked with Jill Scott, Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Wyclef, and more.

B Hill

A lifelong passionate artist and designer. Native to Harlem-New York City, Hill now exhibits and paints live, showcasing her nine-year figurative subject matter: “A Woman’s perspective.” In conjunction with her exhibitions, she directs an international art education foundation, “Art Education with B. Hill”, which brings art curriculum to underserved schools and communities. She will be joining the festival’s Live Art room.

Rising Star, Lumane

Switzerland native Lumane is not your typical pop artist. Much of her inspiration stems from her mother playing “Moonlight Sonata” by Beethoven on the piano when she was just a toddler. At four-years-old, Lumane put her foot forward to be like her mom learning to play different instruments throughout the years to come. In the mix of that was learning to use her vocal gift in hopes of expressing her creative side.
Lumane had the opportunity to audition her talents at the age of 13 in front of superstar judges in Germany on a show called “Das Supertalent”, which is similar to America’s Got Talent. She sang her heart out only to be left with no invitation back. Lumane was determined to grow. Years later with thousands of hours put into vocal lessons and practice, she auditioned for The Voice in Switzerland making her way through 3 rounds. This progress wasn’t enough for Lumane.
Lumane did not give up. With the support of her family, she pushed further to achieve her dreams. She bought a plane ticket to New York to continue her studies in the city that never sleeps. While being in school 6 days a week to study Musical Theatre and Acting for Film & TV she continued writing and producing her own songs on the side. After finishing the two-year program she realized that songwriting and pop music was her true passion, not musical theatre. This lead her to audition for the Berklee College of Music in Boston and started her studies there only a couple of months later. Being surrounded by like-minded musicians was exactly the inspiration Lumane needed. After only two semesters at Berklee, an opportunity to finally take the first steps in using her talents to professionally create and record her first set of songs presented itself.
She packed her bags, returned her apartment keys, bought a plane ticket to Nashville, TN to start actively working on her dream instead of just learning about it in class and books. Lumane finished her degree from Berklee online while writing songs with award-winning producers and writers. This first true experience in the music industry left her thirsty for more.
In her music, Lumane wants to tell her story and experiences – moving to a different continent at 18 years young by herself, being an immigrant in the US and meeting the love of her life, as well as empower people to stand up for themselves and for what they believe is right. All of this comes wrapped in powerful vocals and beautiful melodies, accompanied by explosive beats and heartbreaking piano parts.
Lumane worked with a Grammy-nominated producer on songs like “Taboo”, “Letters”, and “White Lies” which are three recent releases from this electro-pop artist. Her next song titled “Poison” is a story we all have – the feeling you get when you find the right person for you after only meeting toxic people and seeing right through them. Sounds like a good song, right? You can hear for yourself on all streaming platforms.

Grow Your Spotify Plays Overnight

If you are looking for more Spotify exposure, then you can join the millions of other Spotify artists that are trying to do the same thing. However, it feels like all we are ever doing is just treading water. We post songs and playlists only to have them fall into oblivion. They never see the light of day and never get a hit. 

Promotions seem to go nowhere. It doesn’t matter how many times you Tweet out a link to your music. It all ends up the same way, low plays, low streams, and low follows. It doesn’t have to be this way. It doesn’t have to be so hard. You have to be proactive about your marketing, but you also need to focus on the metrics that will actually improve your Spotify rankings. Pinterest, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook are all great places to start but you won’t grow a following unless you hit the below metrics. Once you understand what you need to do, just rinse and repeat. You will soon be basking in the glow of plays.

You need to market your music by increase your play and follower metrics. You need to buy Spotify plays. This common practice will get your listings over the hump to be seen by a new crowd.

Why Improve Your Plays?

The Spotify algorithm is specific to Spotify platform metrics. This means that you need to focus on improving your Spotify platform numbers. Like what was mentioned above, exposure on other platforms is great but it will only get you so far. You need those marketing events to convert into Spotify metrics.

The first metric you need to improve is the play count. This could be connected to an album, playlist, or a specific song. It all depends on what your goals are for your artistic talents. Song pay count tells the Spotify algorithm that people are listening to your stuff. It shows that you are relevant and significant to the current music scene. It could be based on a genre of music or just the industry as a whole. 

Plays matter over the course of time. If you have a bunch of plays in a single day, it isn’t going to boost anything for very long. You may appear higher in the algorithm for the next 24 hours, but afterwards you will be forgotten, again. Instead you want to think about the long term. More plays overtime is the better philosophy. So, if you got 100 plays, it is better to have 1 a day for 100 days than all 100 plays in the same day. 

Why Improve Your Followers?

Remember that it isn’t just about plays. If you stuff gets played a bunch, that is great, but it isn’t the end of the story. If you are looking to solidify a top spot in the Spotify algorithm, you need to show that it isn’t just about your music, it is about you as an artist. Take a band like Radiohead. Their music is wildly popular. However, Radiohead as a band is popular as well. So, if they were still making music, they would be recommended alongside similar artists because the “followers” action shows that it is more than just a single song or two that makes them so important.

This is obvious. When you look at other social media platforms you see the same actions taking place. Instagram and Facebook are the best examples of the potential for ranking improvements when there are more followers, not just likes or shares. Instagram like increasing services like Buzzoid are often talked about, but few can deliver on the promises that Buzzoid does, say experts. Their real Instagram likes are the best on the market, and when used in combination with a Spotify boosting service it is a wonderful sight. The Spotify algorithm takes in the totality of the artist’s metrics in order to decide how worthy they are to be recommended to other listeners. Once you get there, royalties will start to improve as organic listeners start to steadily increase with time.

Are Certain Listeners Better Than Others?

Yes, certain Spotify listeners are more important than others. However, you want a mix of all types of listeners in order to really impress the algorithm. What does this mean? There are generally two types of Spotify listeners and they can interact with your account in one of two ways. So, basically, there are four different results that could happen. Let’s go through them.

First, you could have a free listener listen to a song once. This individual has the least amount of impact on your account. Second, you could have a free listener continually listen to your music. This has more impact because it shows that an individual really likes your stuff and wants to listen to it more and more.

Third, you could have a paid premium listener listen to a song once. This has some impact due to a higher royalty payment that comes from premium members. Fourth, you could have a paid premium listen subscribe and continually listen to your music. This has the largest impact of all of them. Make sure that when you are buying Spotify plays that you focus on the mix of different listeners.

Musicians x Social Distancing

Engineers and musicians from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music and the Houston Symphony determined social distancing will not be enough to keep musicians safe while performing on-stage.

Using a high-speed camera, researchers studied air released by musicians who were singing or playing wind instruments.

Ashok Veeraraghavan, a Rice imaging expert, said social distancing is important, but other factors must be taken into account.

“Our main message is that there is no single silver bullet. Performance venues are going to need a mix of several different risk mitigation strategies. Each of them will help a little, and the sum total of all of them will minimize risk to both the performers and the audience,” Veeraraghavan said.

Robert Yekovich, dean of the Shepherd School of Music and co-principal investigator of the study, said a goal of the study was to help people return to the stage, which is why the findings are being published.

“Peer review may take a year or more, and we believe it is imperative to make others aware of what we found,” Yekovich said.

Schlieren imaging is a method used to study airflow, so Yekovich, Veeraraghavan and John Mangum, the president and CEO of the Houston Symphony, used it to study singers and flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trombone, trumpet and tuba players.

With cameras, a high-resolution background and computational algorithms, they were able to see and track air flow after it leaves mouths and instruments and travels throughout the room.

While the travel of large droplets is well-documented, they wanted to study microdroplets, which can linger in the air for hours.

The group hypothesized that the microdroplets would be the most important droplets to pay attention to. The experiment showed that exhaled air and droplets tended to rise to the top of the room.

“Because exhaled air was warmer than the room air, we found most of it rose rather quickly, carrying the bulk of exhaled microdroplets into air currents that were primarily driven by ventilation,” Veeraraghavan said.

They now recommend music venues meeting or exceeding federal guidelines of six room air exchanges per hour. They also suggest that venues themselves consider air filtration above the stage.

Veeraraghavan still said social distancing is important because of the large droplets, adding that masks should be worn.

Mangum thought that social distancing would be the most important thing when welcoming performers and audiences back to venues, but it’s going to take a bit more than standing six feet apart.

“The Rice experiments showed it’s more complex than that. Now we want all musical organizations and individual musicians to benefit from that understanding,” Mangum said.

Eric Clapton × Pedrito Martinez – My Father’s Eyes

Today sees widely respected Latin percussionist Pedrito Martinez release a reimagined duet version of Eric Clapton’s My Father’s Eyes” – featuring a collaborative performance with the guitar legend himself. Having the opportunity to work closely with Eric Clapton is the fulfillment of a longtime dream for Pedrito that had its roots at New York City’s Guantanamera restaurant, where Pedrito’s group got started, and where Eric was a frequent guest.

Upon receiving the initial recording, Eric Clapton invited the innovative Cuban percussionist to London last year to work together , where he added his own vocals and guitar to My Father’s Eyes and additional guitar contributions to two more tracks that will also be included in Pedrito’s upcoming album, Acertijos, expected to be released in early 2021.

The rock ‘n’ roll legends that are the Rolling Stones will open a world-first flagship store, ‘RS No. 9 Carnaby’ at 9 Carnaby Street in London’s Soho. The new store, created in partnership with Bravado, Universal Music Group’s merchandise and brand management company, will feature all the hallmarks of the iconic band and include exclusive new fashion and merchandise under the ‘RS No. 9 Carnaby’ brand available in-store and online beginning 9 September 2020.
