Sparks – “Existential Threat”

SPARKS TEAM UP WITH CYRIAK FOR “EXISTENTIAL THREAT” VIDEO

Sparks are excited to share the new video for the song “The Existential Threat,” from their new album A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip, which was released on CD, vinyl and cassette this past Friday, July 3. The video was created by the iconic animator Cyriak, known for his subversive and surreal work. “The incredibly manic and overwhelming nature of the existential threats that are facing all of us nowadays and our reaction to those threats, expressed musically and lyrically in our song ‘The Existential Threat’, are brilliantly demonstrated in the frightening and beautiful video for the song by Cyriak.” — Ron and Russell Mael, Sparks

Speaking about the process Cyriak said: “When I was asked to make a music video for Sparks, I could hardly believe it. They sent me the whole of their new album to choose from, and there was this one song that immediately stood out – ‘The Existential Threat’. Not only did the music fit perfectly with my animation style, the subject of existential dread is something I have been fascinated by for as long as I can remember. It was like I could see the whole video inside my head as I listened to the song. “The brief was totally open, but I felt this track deserved more than just some crazy visuals. It has a psychology driving it, and a feeling that hangs over us all, especially in these modern times of information overload. Are these threats real, or imaginary? Are they just a paranoid delusion, or do we ignore them at our peril? It was great fun making this video, and I hope it makes people think about their inevitable impending death in a more light-hearted way.” The extraordinary A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip was released digitally on May 15 to universal acclaim.

“With A STEADY DRIP, DRIP, DRIP, Sparks have drawn on the many styles and many great moments in a multi-faceted career that began in their native Los Angeles in 1967, while retaining the unique identity. Whatever style they embrace, and they have embraced most – pop, rock, New Wave, synth-pop, disco, dance, electro, orchestral, opera – they always remain ineffably, irrefutably, inescapably, undeniably Sparks.” – LouderThanWar

“No band should by rights sound as sharp, melodic and funny more than 50 years into their career. But Sparks are no ordinary band.” – Q

This next year should also see the eagerly awaited premiere of the musical Annette, the first English-language film from groundbreaking French director Leos Carax (Holy Motors, Pola X), written by Ron and Russell Mael and starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard. In addition, director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Baby Driver) is putting the finishing touches to his as-yet-untitled Sparks documentary, a long-in-the-making feature-length film celebrating this singular band.

360 Magazine, Breakbot 'Be Mine Tonight'

Breakbot – Translight

Breakbot has today unveiled a much needed feel-good new disco tune Translight . This is the 2nd and final track from Breakbot’s Be Mine Tonight EP out in full today on Ed Banger Records/ Because Music.

Translight is another classic Breakbot record, delicately blending elements of disco and French house. Often prone to collaborations, Breakbot has forgone a vocalist on Translight, instead crafting a weightless groove around a hypnotic vocal loop, accompanied by some groovy rhythm guitars and shimmering synths. It’s a track that will allow listeners to briefly escape the current global calamity and bask in sexy sounds of the beloved French producer.

Breakbot released the EP’s title track “Be Mine Tonight” back in April, premiered on PAPER. The instrumental of Be Mine Tonight was actually used to soundtrack a Chanel ad campaign featuring super producer Pharrell, American actress Margaret Qualley, Belgian pop singer Angèle, French actress Isabelle Adjani and French singer/songwriter Sébastien Tellier.

Breakbot was slated to tour North America throughout April, but all of his tour dates were canceled in light of the pandemic. Fortunately Breakbot has continued to satisfy fans throughout quarantine, releasing two excellent tracks and a delightfully uplifting Lockdown Boogie mix.

Jessie Ware – What’s Your Pleasure?

Jessie Ware’s fourth album What’s Your Pleasure? is available today via PMR Records/Friends Keep Secrets/Interscope Records. The album includes the acclaimed singles “Spotlight,” “Ooh La La,” and latest release “Save A Kiss.”

Following the success of her critically-adored podcast ‘Table Manners’ (it’s now on its ninth season and has racked up over 13 million listens) and a recent cookbook launch, Jessie has spent the last two years working on her most confident record yet. What’s Your Pleasure? is a collection of sophisticated, hard-bodied pop funk that capitalizes on a love of 70s, 80s and 90s club culture coupled with Jessie’s vocals and the intuitive production of long-time friend James Ford (Simian Mobile Disco) culminates in a sound that feels instantly compelling.

The single “Save A Kiss” echoes Disco divas of the past and sees Jessie at her most flirtatious while carrying the carnal energy of a first encounter on a nightclub dancefloor. “Spotlight” is a divine slice of elegant Nu disco, the album’s commanding title track is an incisive, refreshingly positive throwback that channels the energy of classic funk and dance. “Ooh La La” sees Jessie dip her toe into the camp side of disco while the album ends on the track “Remember Where You Are,” a bright and glorious conclusion to a record that takes you from the heady basslines of a dingy nightclub to tomorrow’s sunrise.

Jessie has succeeded in audaciously mulching several decades of party music into an album so relentless it doubles as a playlist. It’s a recipe for club glory with its sleek disco influence and the kind of free-roaming rubbery bass lines that would have you dancing non-stop. It’s the perfect prescription for a world without dance floors.

Jessie Ware Drops New Video

Jessie Ware has released the video for her latest single “Save A Kiss” from her upcoming album What’s Your Pleasure?

Directed by Vicky Lawton, “Save A Kiss” was made entirely in quarantine. The concept behind the visual is connecting everyone to their loved ones through dance, and it featured 14 fans dancing to the track alongside the singer in self-shot videos. “This song feels particularly special coming out now, I love it and feel really proud of what we have made for the video,” Jessie said.

With production from Simian Mobile Disco’s James Ford and Midland, “Save A Kiss” is a recipe for club glory with its sleek disco influence and free-roaming rubbery bass lines that make you want to get up and dance. It’s the perfect prescription for today’s world.

“‘Save A Kiss’ has taken on a new meaning during these weird times and it seems like the right time to put it out,” explained Jessie, “This track is an optimistic one for me, I hope it resonates with people wherever they are right now. It’s an upbeat song to dance along to and have fun with. I know I’ve got plenty of kisses I’m saving up for everyone when this is all over.

Last month, Jessie announced her fourth studio album, What’s Your Pleasure?, to great fan excitement. Pitchform said “Her latest single reminds us why we listen to dance music in the first place,” with Fader adding “‘Ooh La La’ is the kind of track that could make quarantine feel like Studio 54.” The record is a collection of sophisticated, hard-bodied pop funk that capitalizes on a love of 70s, 80s, and 90s club culture coupled with Jessie’s vocals and the intuitive production of long-time friend James Ford culminates in a sound that feels instantly compelling.

With four BRIT-nominations plus a Mercury Prize nomination and three UK top-ten albums under her belt, Jessie has proven her status as one of the UK’s most influential artists. Her return with the dancefloor ready What’s Your Pleasure? feels like an artist in control while capturing the essence of nostalgia to keep the spirit of club music and the dancefloor alive.

Today, British producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist SG Lewis released his brand new collaborative single with Clairo ‘Throwaway’ via Casablanca/Republic Records in North America. The track follows ‘Blue’ as the second to come from ‘Dawn’, the third and final installment of his hugely ambitious three-part concept album Dusk, Dark, Dawn, out later this year.

‘Throwaway’ is the second collaborative track between SG and rising viral US star Clairo, after last summer’s breakthrough track ‘Better’. Clairo’s honeyed vocals on ‘Throwaway’ are perfectly framed by SG’s intimate, downtempo production; “Clairo is one of my favorite artists to work with, and a good friend of mine” says SG: “Throwaway was written in LA one evening – we were both super tired and had some shit going on in our respective personal lives. We sat and talked for ages, and after that Throwaway flowed out in no time at all. Clairo is such a special artist and an incredible songwriter, and I’m super proud of this song.”

Dusk, Dark,Dawn chronicles the trajectory of a night out through its different moods and genres and serves as a tribute to club and youth culture. While Dusk (released earlier in 2018) blended disco, smooth electro and funk and Dark explored distinctly heavier yet still diverse sounds, Dawn is a sonic embodiment of those euphoric sunrise moments and the feeling of togetherness at the end of a night well spent.

It’s been an incredible six months for SG Lewis that has seen the artist sell-out venues across the US, Asia and Europe. Dark lead single ‘Hurting’ has continued to grow, hitting No.1 on the Billboard Dance/Mix Show Airplay Chart two weeks ago, and with SG set to play a prime slot at this year’s Coachella, he continues to cement his status as not just one of London’s hottest new talents but also a formidable artist capable of making a splash on both sides of the Atlantic.

SG has previously collaborated with Col3trane, Raye, Ray BLK, The Neptunes/N.E.R.D’s Chad Hugo, Gerd Janson, Conducta and more as well as producing Dave’s ‘100M’s’ proving his worth as one of the most respected and prolific musicians from the UK and a producer capable of working outside of genre and style.

SG LEWIS RELEASES ‘DUSK’

Songwriter and producer SG Lewis shares ‘Dusk’. The 6-track release is the first chapter of his three-part dedication to club music: ‘Dusk, Dark, Dawn’ and is available to buy and stream now via all partners.

Presented over three phases, ‘Dusk, Dark, Dawn’ maps the trajectory of one night out over the course of an album, matching genres and tempos different stages of that night, beginning at sun-down, both inside and outside the club. On ‘Dusk’, SG Lewis plays with disco, west coast hip-hop and 80’s electro references to start the story. “Disco has always had the association of the start of a night for me. I spent a lot a time as a resident DJ in clubs and disco was always that magnetic genre, always brought people onto the dancefloor.” Lead single ‘Aura’ blends SG’s signature warm, uptempo house with disco inflections. “There’s an undeniable beauty to this part of the night. The apprehension, excitement… ‘Dusk’ is the warm-up for the heavier, darker things to come.”

The 6-track release includes features with J Warner and Kartell (Roche Musique) and will be released in full on April 6th via Casablanca/Republic Records. The project will soon segue into ‘Dark’ – a phase dedicated to harder, post-midnight club music styles like techno and hip-hop – and finally ‘Dawn’, dedicated to euphoria and chillout. Throughout the week SG Lewis has been touring across the UK with his final sold out show happening tomorrow at London’s Electric Brixton where he’ll be bringing out some very special guests.

Beth Ditto

Tonight, Beth Ditto returns to her home state of Arkansas to kick off a North American tour in support of Fake Sugar (Virgin Records), her solo debut album. After this eveningߣs show at Revolution Music Room in Little Rock, sheߣll head to Nashville, TN for a performance at the Mercy Lounge tomorrow, March 8. The run includes shows at New Yorkߣs Brooklyn Steel (March 14), The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles, CA (March 23) and Wonder Ballroom in Portland, OR (March 27).

Ditto will perform on NBC Late Night with Seth Meyers on Tuesday, March 13. NPR has hailed her as the force-of-nature performer best known for fronting the pop-punk group Gossip. In a four-star live review, The Guardian said, Ditto alternates between infectiously warm, wisecracking comic and soul-baring torch singer.

The New York Times praised Ditto as a powerhouse singer and noted that the albums songs have stomp and girl-group melodies, Southernisms in their lyrics and garage-rock swagger. The Wall Street Journal included Fake Sugar in its round-up of The Best Music of 2017 and observed, Great pop for grownups is a rare commodity BethDittodelivers. Paperchristened Ditto rock’s homecoming queen while People highlighted Fake Sugar as one of its Picks, observing, Whether it’s a glittering stomper (Oo La La) or stripped-down Stevie Nicks homage (the title track), Ditto shines throughout

Her cover of Im Alive written by Tommy James and first recorded in 1968 by R&B legend Johnny Thunder has been licensed by Max Factor for an international advertising campaign. In addition to releasing six acclaimed albums with the Gossip, Ditto has recorded with such artists as Blondie and disco legend Cerrone, collaborated with Jean Paul Gaultier on her eponymous plus-sized luxury clothing line, modeled for Marc Jacobs. She appears in the new Gus Van Sant film, Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far On Foot, which recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
