About GIVĒON

GIVĒON has made himself one of music’s brightest stars by bringing vivid color, depth, and soul to songs that capture the intensity of life’s twists and turns. After coming to fame via Drake’s “Chicago Freestyle,” the CA native became a force in his own right. GIVĒON had a whirlwind 2020 after releasing his Platinum-certified “Like I Want You” (230 million cross-platform streams in the US). He kept the momentum with “Heartbreak Anniversary,” a gauzy ballad that peaked at #16 on the Billboard Hot 100, garnered over 684 million streams, and earned 2X Platinum status. In March 2020, GIVĒON’s debut EP, Take Time, confirmed his evocative songwriting prowess and would be nominated for Best R&B Album at the 2021 Grammys. His fall When It’s All Said and Done EP further explored the peaks and valleys of love and, when re-packaged with its predecessor in 2021, hit #5 on the Billboard 200. After being nominated for a 2020 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding New Artist, he won BET’s 2021 Best New Artist, and his audience is growing—to the tune of over 1.7 billion streams globally. He even hit #1 on the Hot 100 in March on Justin Bieber’s “Peaches.” That hit helped him win award for Best Pop Song at the 2021 MTV VMA‘s where he was nominated for seven awards including Best New Artist, Best R&B and Best Pop Song. Drake then invited GIVĒON back into his world, this time for a sizzling verse on Certified Lover Boy’s “In the Bible” with Lil Durk—one of a guaranteed run of thrilling collabs to come. And at his festival debut, Lollapalooza 2021, he found a sea of voices who knew his lyrics. But success has never really been a goal— GIVĒON just wants to bear his soul.

Gayle – abcdefu

17-year-old rising pop singer-songwriter GAYLE has debuted a stripped back version of her Atlantic Records debut single “abcdefu.” The original version has quickly amassed over 17M global streams. The emotional acoustic version of “abcdefu” is streaming now via YouTube HERE, which has been praised by Blackbook for its “earnest intensity.” “This video is to honor the girl who played in her bedroom for a year-and-a-half,” says GAYLE.

GAYLE celebrated the success of her fiery single “abcdefu” with three other alternate versions. “abcdefu (demo),” “abcdefu (chill),” and “abcdefu (angrier)” are streaming now via DSPs and streaming services. Each version showcases a different side of the versatile song.  The original version of “abcdefu” has amassed over 17M global streams and is available now at all DSPs and streaming services HERE; an official music video is streaming now via YouTube HERE. GAYLE has already garnered some of pop’s most influential playlists and the song continues to grow in streams every single week since its launch just over a month ago. Produced by Pete Nappi (Kesha, Anne Marie, Madison Beer, Illenium), “abcdefu” arrives as a glowing example of GAYLE’s gift for fusing raw sincerity with an idiosyncratic and sometimes irreverent perspective. With its minimalist backdrop of jagged guitar work, the tongue-in-cheek breakup song explodes into a glorious free-for-all at its gang-vocal-fueled chorus. But “abcdefu” also telegraphs the Nashville-based artist’s refusal to compromise her own needs.

Along with the new versions of “abcdefu,” GAYLE has announced that she will serve as support on the upcoming Winnetka Bowling League tour. Tickets are on sale now- see the full list of dates below, and visit https://www.wbleague.com/ for more info.

What's Your Black? by Nyame Brown for use by 360 Magazine

Nyame Brown Featured at Oakland Museum of California

Nyame Brown Large-scale Blackboard Painting What’s Your Black? in Mothership: Voyage Into Afrofuturism at the Oakland Museum of California

Exhibition Opening Saturday, August 7, 2021

Nyame Brown will be featured in Mothership: Voyage Into Afrofuturism at the Oakland Museum of California, opening August 7, 2021 and on view through February 27, 2022. The exhibition explores Afrofuturism as a strategy that imagines the world through a Black cultural lens and strives for a more just present and future. Curated by OMCA Curator Rhonda Pagnozzi and Consulting Curator Essence Harden, the exhibition celebrates Black imagination and includes the work of over 50 artists—including Wangechi MutuDavid Huffman, and Chelle Barbour, among others—historians, musicians, and collaborators. The show highlights the key role that the fantasy and science fiction of Afrofuturism has, as a strategy for Black community building by envisioning the African Diaspora and Black culture as central in a technically advanced and culturally rich civilization.

Brown—an Afrofuturist installation artist working in the media of painting, drawing, cut paper, blackboards, augmented reality, gaming, and fashion—addresses the Black imagination as a site for new ways to perceive the Diaspora as trans-Atlantic, psychic, and imagined—not just through unity and similarity, but by looking at the dynamics of difference. What’s Your Black?, part of his larger series of blackboard paintings, is envisioned as a tool to combat racial oppression, using a cultural production of the Black community to offer a space to create a new Black mythology. Building narratives like scaffolding around art historical references, hip hop, and personal history, he draws on these precedents as a fluid source of reference, rather than a fixed and linear projection. Reimagining contemporary notions of Blackness in visual culture, he challenges traditional representation and subverts it for a richer surreal language found in folklore and African American hyperbole. His depictions provide different ways to access African American culture through an approach that seeks social transformation and community revolution.

About Nyame Brown

Nyame Oulynji Brown received his BFA from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago, and MFA from Yale School of Art and Architecture. He has been the recipient of the Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Award, and the Richard Dreihaus Foundation Individual Artist Award, as well as a site-specific public commission for the Malcolm X Memorial Foundation, for which he executed a double portrait of Malcolm X and the artist Jack Whitten. His participation in Theaster Gates’ Black Artist Retreat in Chicago was followed by residencies at the Headlands Center for the Arts (for work on his project The Mapping of Aaron, a model for radical Blackness), Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, and the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans. Brown was honored with a solo exhibition at The Museum of the African Diaspora, and has held solo exhibitions across the U.S., notably at the Hearst Museum at St. Mary’s College (John Henry’s adventures in a Post Black world) and the West Virginia University Art Museum. He has actively participated in group exhibitions in a variety of spaces in California, Illinois, Michigan and New York, and his work has been curated for inclusion at the Museum of Harlem, NY, and the Prizm Art Fair at the Mana Contemporary in Miami. He also took part with Carrie Mae Weems in the symposium The Interrogation of Forms: The Changing Culture in America at The Armory in New York. Brown was selected as the 2020 Tosa Studio Award recipient and was awarded a studio at Minnesota Street Project through 2021.

How to Get a Job at a Dispensary

The cannabis trade is one of the fastest-growing industries in the US. Americans purchased $18.3 billion in cannabis products, a 71% increase over the prior year. However, hiring in this area still lags, and it’s one of the more competitive job markets. Those who are anxious for a position in a dispensary can do a few things to increase their odds of getting hired.

1. Become knowledgeable about cannabis products.

Learn about the different strains that are available and what flavors and experiences they offer. Be able to talk intelligently about hybrids, terpenes, and THC content. You can learn all of this and more by reading cannabis industry websites and newsletters. The more you know, the better a hire you’ll be.

2. Create a killer resume.

Your resume and cover letter make up your first impression. Construct yours so that it highlights the skills and experience that would make you a great budtender. No experience in the cannabis field? Consider a skill-based resume that highlights past customer service positions and education about cannabis.

Mirror the language used in the job ad. For instance, if they say they want someone who can establish rapport with customers, use that phrase when describing your skills. A resume isn’t just a record of your job history. It’s an important personal marketing tool. Customize yours for every job opening to increase your chances of landing the gig.

3. Highlight your customer service and sales skills.

Being able to provide a great experience to customers is a key to being a successful budtender. In your cover letter or in your interview, talk about what you consider a great visit to a cannabis dispensary and how you can make it happen for your customers.

Before your interview, think of a story you can share about a time you helped a customer make a decision. Or, describe a time that you used sales skills to increase company revenue. A former server, for instance, can describe how they convinced restaurant guests to stay for dessert or add a bottle of wine to a special meal.

4. Get familiar with the dispensaries in your area.

The more customized your approach, the more likely you are to win the job. If you live in the Oakland area, visit several Oakland dispensaries for research. Learn about the offerings and the look and feel of each. This gives you the tools you need to show that you are a cultural match for the shop.

5. Set yourself up for a lateral move.

If the position you want isn’t open or if it’s one that requires experience, don’t give up hope. Instead, change your strategy. Look for other job openings in the cannabis field. It doesn’t matter if it’s cleaning and maintenance, as long as you learn on the job and make an excellent impression. Once you are in, you are in a position to hear about new openings first. You can build up your resume and your knowledge to make you a better fit for the role that is your ultimate goal.

6. Use your networks.

Far more jobs are filled by word of mouth than by online job ads. Talk to the people who you know both personally and professionally. You may know someone who has a lead for a shop that is looking for new personnel.

7. Thank your interviewer.

If you get as far as an interview, make a good impression during and after by being friendly, open, and establishing good rapport. After your interview, take a few minutes to pen a hand-written thank you note for sharing their time with you. This used to be common job hunt etiquette, but has largely fallen out of favor. By making this unusual move, you can make yourself stick out from the crowd.

8. Emphasize your soft skills.

Most dispensaries aren’t just looking for someone to run a register. They want someone who is warm and approachable. Being able to put first-time visitors at ease is a soft skill that is vital for a successful dispensary worker. You should also be able to show that you are a good multitasker who can switch easily from task to task.

If you are passionate about cannabis and want to be part of this industry, that enthusiasm should come out in your resume, your cover letter and your interview. Take the time to hone your pitch to show your local dispensary that you are an excellent fit.

Ted Allen × Subaru

Subaru of America, the famed brand and subsidiary of the Subaru Corporation of Japan, is hosting an event to fundraise for the HIV/AIDS community across the nation. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced dramatic changes to all lives and brought devastating challenges to the restaurant community, as well as to the healthcare organizations who support people in need. Subaru’s annual restaurant-based fundraiser, Dining Out For Life hosted by Subaru, sends crucially needed funds to HIV/AIDS organizations in cities across North America. This aide represents Subaru’s commitment to extending beyond the automobile realm to be an active and ethical member of communities.

Chopped! host Ted Allen joins with Subaru of America, Inc. in their continuing support for Dining Out For Life, and invites the public to join Allen and guests on Instagram Live on Thursday, September 24, 8:00-9:00 p.m. EDT, for a spicy, clean-food, cooking demonstration. The event will also be hosted by New York-based, award-winning Chef Ric Orlando, as well as conversation with Designer/HIV Activist Mondo Guerra, and actor/author, Pam Grier.

To join the event, go to @Subaru_USA. The nearly 3,000 restaurants that participate in Dining Out For Life need support now more than ever. On September 24, dining out and take-out events will be happening in several cities across the country: Oakland, California; Birmingham, Alabama; Chicago, Illinois; Louisville, Kentucky; Alaska; Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Seattle, Washington. Many more regions will hold in-person and virtual events in October and through December. Visit your community’s page on diningoutforlife to find participating restaurants and to support your community. Another way an individual can help is to reach out to the HIV/AIDS Service Organization that produces Dining Out For Life in your community to see how one can help the people they serve during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last year, with support from Subaru of America, Inc., more than $4.2 million dollars was raised from a single day of dining in 60 cities coast to coast, the most funds raised since the event began in 1991. “A commitment to caring for the people in our communities is integral to our Subaru Love Promise, and our longstanding partnership with Dining Out for Life is a shining example of the importance of supporting causes that matter,” said Alan Bethke, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Subaru of America, Inc. “We are proud to help raise awareness and funds to fight against HIV/AIDS and benefit those who are impacted in our local communities.”

Funds raised through a city’s Dining Out For Life event stay in that region to provide HIV care, prevention, education, testing, counseling and other essential services to people living with or impacted by HIV/AIDS. This event, hosted by Subaru, truly represents the best of both worlds in supporting local communities in more ways than one.
