AMAZON’S THE GRAND TOUR

Has a show or movie ever energized you to seek adventure beyond the screen? The Grand Tour, a Prime Original that follows three intrepid former car journalists on their high speed escapades around the world, has attracted fans ready to hit the road for their own adrenaline fueled adventures. Amazon uncovered a few fun facts about Prime members who have streamed The Grand Tour, and we’re spreading the word on where to get inspiration for your next trip to the great outdoors. These trends were obtained by comparing the purchase behavior of a sample of 100K Grand Tour viewers on Amazon to that of 100K Non-Grand Tour viewers.

Amazon learned Grand Tour viewers are more likely to seek extreme outdoor hobbies and live in areas known for adventure in the great outdoors than those Prime members who haven’t streamed the show yet. In 2017, Grand Tour viewers spent 24% more in Amazon’s Sports & Outdoor store than an average non-Grand Tour viewer. And these Grand Tour viewers are not just novices of the outdoors; they purchased more brands for top outdoor athletes and serious outdoor enthusiasts including GoPro, Black Diamond, Osprey, Patagonia and Thule than did non-Grand Tour viewers. The largest percentage differences in spend on outdoor equipment between Grand Tour viewers and non-Grand Tour viewers were on cycling gear (53%), rock climbing gear (45%) and skiing and snowboarding gear (44%).

It is no surprise Grand Tour viewers in the US are living in places that are known as gateways to adventure. Washington – home of Mt. Rainier, Olympic National Park and neighbor to the Pacific Ocean, andColorado – land of the Rocky Mountains and Mesa Verde National Park, had the highest number of Grand Tour season two viewers per capita in the US. These states have an abundance of activities for those seeking an outdoor and adventurous lifestyle.

Grand Tour viewers are more likely to drive cars that are compact and adventure-ready and steer clear of the family cars. When purchasing automobile parts in Amazon’s Automotive store, customers can add information about their current car to the Amazon Garage for shopping parts and accessories designed specifically for that vehicle. The Subaru Impreza was the top car model that was more likely to be added to a Grand Tour viewer’s garage than a Non-Grand Tour viewer’s in 2017.

If you have been looking for motivation to dust off your bike, climb a new route, wax your skis or take the family camping, check out The Grand Tour for some adventure inspiration and see you in the great outdoors!

PENCE AT OLYMPICS

Olympics, Two-Thirds of US to VP Pence: Not Appropriate to Stay Seated During Opening Ceremonies

Viewing of Games on Streaming Devices Makes a ‘Breakthrough’ Impact;
Americans Disapprove of  ‘Shut Up and Dribble by Wide Margin,’ also say Athletes should be Able to Comment on Social Issues;
Approval of Subsidies to U.S. Olympic Athletes by More than 2 to 1;
Absence of Matt Lauer and Bob Costas gauged; Ban on tackle football until freshman year in high school?

Vice President Mike Pence’s decision to remain seated as the combined North and South Korean teams entered the stadium during Olympic Opening Ceremonies received a harsh rebuke from the American public – by 3-to-1, according to a Seton Hall Sports Poll conducted this week,

A strong 66% said the gesture was not appropriate, with only 18% supporting the decision.  People in the 18-44 age bracket disapproved by 72%-14%, while older people, by 60% to 22% –  were somewhat more supportive — but still strongly opposed.

“It’s a departure from the reaction to most actions taken by the current administration during this era of polarization,” noted Rick Gentile, director of the poll, which is sponsored by the Sharkey Institute.   “Eighteen percent is less than half of the usual approval found from polling on other administration actions.”

The poll was conducted this week with random calls to 775 adults on landlines and cellphones across the country, and has a margin of error of +/- 3.6%.

Olympic Games: Streaming Garners ‘Breakthrough’ Numbers; General Interest Levels Gauged; Impact of Absence of Bob Costas and Matt Lauer; Subsidies for U.S. Olympic Athletes Favored

As for the Olympic Games themselves, 17% named “streaming” as the manner in which they mostly watched the Games, and while 54% named NBC’s primetime coverage, the 17% is significant for the communications industry as a breakthrough number.  (12% named “other TV networks” as their most preferred option).

“It’s eye-popping,” said Gentile.  “It marks yet another breakthrough in the so-called ‘cord-cutting’ era.  That little more than half of the audience primarily watches on NBC primetime would have been considered remarkable just four years ago. And as a sign of things to come, 44% of those 18-29 chose streaming, about the same as chose NBC prime time.”

Meanwhile, as far as general interest in the Winter Olympics,  only 9% say their interest in greater, while 18% say it is less than previously.  But among those 18-29, coveted by advertisers, interest was greater among 20%, with only single digits in older age groups (7% in the 30-44 category, 6% among 45-59 and 7% among 60+).

“This could be due to the X-Games influence and the increased snow-boarding coverage,” added Gentile.

66% said it didn’t matter whether they were viewing an event live or delayed.  And 66% also said that NBC has done a good job of generating interest in the Games.

This is the first Olympics in many years without Matt Lauer’s presence in the morning, and Bob Costas serving as host in prime time.  16% said the evening coverage was “not as good” without Costas, and 11% said morning coverage was “not as good” without Lauer.

Asked whether the US Olympic Committee should subsidize American athletes who cannot earn a living participating in sports like luge, cross-country skiing, and other sports, 59% said they should offer subsidies with only 22% saying no.

Athletes Voicing Opinions on Social Positions Supported; A Rebuff to Fox’s Ingraham.

The Poll asked whether professional athletes should use their fame to comment on social issues.  47% said yes, and 42% said no, with 11% having no opinion.  But asked about Fox News’ host Laura Ingraham’s comment that the players (notably LeBron James and Kevin Durant) should “shut up and dribble,” only 25% approved while 46% disapproved.  (30% had no opinion).  Among those who identified themselves as African-American, only 12% expressed approval of her comment, with 69% disapproving.

Ban on Tackle Football until Freshman Year in High School?

Finally, the Poll asked for opinions on the bill in the California State Legislature to ban organized tackle football until freshman year in high school in response to the danger of brain injury to younger players.  The bill received support from 46% (nationally), with 24% disapproval.  30% had no opinion or did not know.

About the poll:

This poll was conducted by telephone February 19-21 among 775 adults in the United States. The Seton Hall Sports Poll is conducted by the Sharkey Institute.

Phone numbers were dialed from samples of both standard landline and cell phones. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus 3.8 percentage points. The error for subgroups may be higher. This poll release conforms to the Standards of Disclosure of the National Council on Public Polls.

While still in school, the half-German Victor and the French Simon met in 2007, bonded like long lost brothers, started making music together equally informed by old school soul a la Otis Redding and post-Yeezus hip-hop, and formed Her in 2015. Success followed as the breakout “Five Minutes” soundtracked Apple’s “Shot on iPhone” campaign and eventually generated over 6.7 million Spotify streams. The duo released a pair of EPs Her Tape #1 and Her Tape #2, spawning fan favorites such as “Quite Like,” “Union,” and “Her” and amassing over 20 million cumulative Spotify streams. Merging artfully seductive and provocative visuals and dreamy newer wave pop with a jazz undercurrent, the boys crisscrossed the globe in support of the EPs, including making waves stateside. In the middle of it all, unbeknownst to anyone but those closest to him, Simon lost a long, quiet, and arduous battle with cancer in August 2017. With his friend’s spirit always close by, Victor worked on what would become the duo’s 2018 major label full-length debut, Her [Republic Records].

The Listening Project

Next month, the American Cochlear Implant Alliance will host the premiere of The Listening Project, a documentary co-created by renowned audiologist Jane Madell and Emmy Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Irene Taylor Brodsky. The film profiles 15 young adults who were born deaf but can now hear, thanks to cutting-edge technologies, including cochlear implants.

The Listening Project shows that nothing is impossible for deaf kids,” Madell said. “Thanks to years of determination and hard work – and with an assist from some innovative technology – these young adults have built lives and careers the world may not have thought were possible for them.”

The film’s stars are 15 deaf twenty- and thirty-somethings who rely on groundbreaking medical devices to hear. Most received cochlear implants – electronic hearing devices that bypass a wearer’s ears and send auditory signals directly to the brain.

Some received their devices as young children, while others did not get them until they were teenagers. All underwent years of therapy with Madell in order to acclimate their brain to hearing and learn to speak. They’ve gone on to build successful careers as doctors, business analysts, neuroscientists, musicians, and audiologists, among other pursuits. Most speak like they’ve never had a hearing loss.

“The young people in The Listening Project offer an example that all of us can aspire to, both those with hearing loss and those without,” said Donna Sorkin, executive director of the American Cochlear Implant Alliance. “The future for deaf children today is even brighter, as cochlear implant technology has improved rapidly since the stars of the film were kids.”

INFINITI × ASHLEY BORDEN

A CAR DESIGNED TO EMPOWER MIND AND BODY

INFINITI & CELEBRITY TRAINER ASHLEY BORDEN EDUCATE DRIVERS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF WELLNESS

Not many would associate driving with exercise. Whilst staying fit is essential to our wellness, simple daily exercises can also contribute to a more positive and all round safer driving experience.

Drivers that exercise have greater ease in turning their heads to see blind spots when changing lanes or to back up. They are also able to rotate their bodies farther to scan the driving environment while making right-hand turns and were able to get into the cars more rapidly, demonstrating an increased overall flexibility.

The all-new QX50 is designed to be a soothing sanctuary, with technology and design created around the driver’s needs for a calmer, safer and stress-free life.

Its peaceful interior has an Active Noise Cancellation technology, created within a state-of- the-art BOSE 16-speaker sound system, helps make the cabin blissfully free from unwanted sound intrusion.

The seats in the 2019 QX50 are designed drawing from NASA zero-gravity research and joint study from Keio University in Tokyo. The ergonomic shape and foam densities emphasize spinal support and minimizes pressure on muscles and helps maintain natural blood flow.

Additionally, integrated heat and ventilation features reduce the stress that both cold and uncomfortably hot temperatures bring on.

If that’s not enough, INFINITI’s ProPILOT technologies, included in the all-new QX50, is your answer to stressful driving, as it showcases the very beginning of INFINITI’s autonomous drive capabilities.

Bloom: Open Space

Open to the public now, Bloom: Open Space is a new mixed reality generative music experience created by musician, producer, visual artist, and thinker Brian Eno and longtime collaborator, musician/software designer Peter Chilvers. For just five days, guests to The Transformatorhuis (Trafo House) at Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam can explore this unique MR installation that blurs the lines between the physical and virtual.

Based upon their highly acclaimed, award-winning app of the same name, the installation explores uncharted territory in the realms of both applications and generative art. Guests can use the Microsoft HoloLens to physically experience Bloom – tapping the air around them to create elaborate patterns and unique melodies with the simplest of gestures.

Says Eno, “I have always been interested by the possibilities that new technologies offer, particularly that subset which falls under the heading ‘things nobody ever thought of doing before.’ This offer was an opportunity to explore the possibilities of Bloom further and augmented reality further.”

Bloom: Open Space seeks to inspire creativity in line with Brian Eno’s innovations, while the HoloLens allows the audience to directly participate and become part of the total experience. Eno has consistently pushed the boundaries of music, sound, and visual art, continually challenging both himself and those who experience his work. Eno and
Chilvers have been experimenting with generative systems for about 15 years, and as well as Bloom, have also released a number of other apps including Scape, Trope, and most recently, Reflection.

A part of the Microsoft Music x Technology program, this collaboration transforms the way we experience and create music. The installation is open to the public in Amsterdam through February 25th, 2018. For those unable to travel to Amsterdam, you can get an inside look at Bloom: Open Space here: bloomopenspace.com
